The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small-scale continuous tests of kyanite ore from Georgia and South Carolina to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial grade kyanite concentrates by flotation. The research indicated that combinations if sulfuric acid and petroleum sulfonate may be used effectively for flotation of kyanite from quartzite-kyanite ore. This report summarizes the results of these tests, and demonstrates the feasibility of producing commercial-grade concentrates with a high recovery of the contained kyanite. Extensive deposits of kyanite occur in the southeastern United States. The reserves of these deposits, if developed, are adequate to supply the United States with 35-mesh kyanite concentrate for many years at the present rate of consumption. According to Espenshade and Potter,' the kyanite-quartz rock type deposits in this area contain about 100 million tons of ore averaging 10 to 30% kyanite. The tonnage of kyanite-bearing gneiss and schist is much larger than the tonnage of kyanite-quartz rock, but the kyanite gneiss and schist are appreciably lower in grade. The largest deposits of kyanite-quartz rock are in the Farmville district, Virginia, and Kings Mountain district, North Carolina-South Carolina, and at Graves Mountain, Ga. Of the known deposits, only four were being mined for kyanite in 1 967. These deposits are near Farmville and Dillwyn, Va., Clover, S.C., and Washington, Ga.

Sodium stannate is widely used in the electroplating and tin alloy industry. But the traditional processes for sodium stannate production are characterized by long flowsheet, high production cost and strict requirement for the equipments, etc. In this study, a novel process for sodium stannate preparation from cassiterite concentrate and sodium carbonate via roasting in CO/CO2 mixed gas then followed by leaching was developed. The effects of roasting parameters on the Sn leaching efficiency were conducted. A Sn leaching efficiency of 77.2% was obtained under the optimal conditions. Sodium stannate (Na2SnO3·3H2O) with a purity of 95.8% was produced by the new process, which is better than that specified for the industrial first-grade product.

Vanadium has been produced from both primary and secondary sources having various compositions. Vanadium pentoxide and vanadium trioxide are the most available and known sources of vanadium oxides. In this paper, an overview of leaching both oxides has been reported. The problem of vanadium pentoxide leaching under acid conditions is the low solubility of the dissolved vanadium. This was investigated and then supplemented with further studies of leaching at mildly basic pH’s as well as under acid reductive leaching conditions (to form vanadium (IV)). Atmospheric oxidative leaching of vanadium trioxide was investigated using oxygen and ferric ion as the oxidant. It was shown that the leaching of vanadium trioxide using oxygen is very slow; however, ferric ion can dramatically increase the kinetics and leach efficiency.

Distillable oils derived from coal were desulfurized and hydrogenated at 2,500 psig in a two-step vapor-phase catalytic operation to give a product rich in saturated cyclic hydrocarbons. The first step was mainly a desulfurization at 400 C, the second a saturation at 300 C. One of the oils used as feed stock was from low-temperature carbonization of a bituminous coal, the other was from the liquid-phase hydrogenation of coal in the Bureau's pilot plant. The product from the saturation step was distilled to remove the light ends and high-boiling residue and to recover a fraction having acceptable properties with respect to heating value, density, freezing point, viscosity, and boiling range according to specifications suggested by the Air Force for ultra-high-speed aircraft fuel. Quantities of the fuel fraction available were too small for the thermal stability test approved by the Air Force. The experiments, performed on laboratory scale, comprised mostly a study of the effect of varying the oil feed rate (at constant oil-to-hydrogen ratio) on the yield of the desired fuel fraction. The yield of the fuel fraction made from low-temperature carbonization oil was a little more than 1 percent of the weight of coal carbonized; that from coal-hydrogenation oil was about 12 percent of the weight of coal hydrogenated. A few attempts to do both desulfurization and saturation in one operation with sulfur resistant catalysts, developed for vapor-phase hydrogenation or hydroforming, were unsuccessful. By leaving the low-boiling ends in both feed stocks to desulfurization, another product was obtained: a low-sulfur aromatic cut boiling below 200 C. This material would be suitable as a solvent or a chemical raw material.

The basic mining law of Cuba is contained in the basic Spanish mining decree having the effect of law December 29 , 1868. This legislation has remained substantially unchanged , with the exception of a few minor administrative changes made by the present Government . These changes provide for the register of mines , oil wells , and operations of such nature , and also provide for the keeping of records showing the value of minerals taken out . By Royal decree of April 17 , 1883 , the law of mines enacted for the Peninsula ( Spain ) on July 6 , 1859 , and the General Bases of December 29 , 1868 , were declared in force in Cuba . In order to encourage the mining of iron org , in 1883 the Crow of Spain issued a royal decree to the following effect.

The study of an entirely new series of alloys may be undertaken from a desire to obtain knowledge applicable to the perfection of industrial alloys, or merely to test certain theoretical considerations. In the case of antimony-tellurium alloys, the theoretical side only is at present important; but it is hoped that the results of this investigation may have some industrial value, at least indirectly, by furnishing one more example for comparison when studying commercial alloys. The statement is found in various places that antimony is isomorphous with arsenic, bismuth and tellurium; but very little experimental evidence has been offered in support of this assumption. All four metals crystallize in rhombohedra, and the ratio of the axes a: c is approximately the same—which seems to indicate, but does not prove, their isomorphism. The close association of these metals in minerals also seems to indicate that they are isomorphous. There are, however, certain differences in their properties which render this coriclusion somewhat doubtful, and it is therefore desirable that inde-

It is often a tedious matter to get a solution of pig iron or steel, for the determination of phosphorus, which is absolutely free from silica. Where pig iron rich in silicon is dissolved in hydrochloric or nitric acid in the usual procedure, it is necessary, not only to evaporate the solution to complete dry ness, but to heat the dry residue for some beam in an air-bath to a temperature of about 120° C. The oxide of iron is thus rendered insoluble in nitric acid, and is only slowly dissolved by hydrochloric acid. In the method of determining silicon by nitric and sulphuric acid, described in the Transactions of the Institute, Vol. VII, page 346, arid Vol. VIII, page 508, we obtain in one or two hours a solution of the iron in the form of ferric sulphate entirely free from silica, and containing free sulphuric acid. It occurred to Us that this solution might be made available for the determination of the phosphorus by the molybdate method. The following experiments mere tried with unsatisfactory results. 1st. The iron was precipitated by ammonia, the precipitate filtered, washed, and dissolved in nitric acid. 2d. The iron was precipitated as basic acetate and dissolved in nitric acid. 3d. The solution was neutralized by ammonia, and nitric acid added in small excess. In all these cases the phosphorus obtained by precipitating by ammonium molybdate and magnesia-mixture was too low. The following method was then tried with success. The filtrate from the silica and graphite was evaporated to small bulk and heated in a porcelain dish on a sand-bath. until fumes of sulphuric acid ceased to escape. The dry residue was taken up with dilute nitric acid and the solution precipitated by ammonium molyldate. The phosphorus was weighed as magnesium pyrophosphate. The results were satisfactory. The results of column leaching tests on 3 different mixed oxide/sulfide ores from a Chilean deposit are presented. The 3 samples contained different ratios of oxide copper minerals to chalcocite and chalcopyrite. The results of the column leach tests are interpreted in light of the shrinking core model for coarse particle leaching. The copper recovery from the oxide minerals and the sulfide minerals each conforms to the shrinking core model with the total recovery equal to the weighted average of the individual minerals. The use of column test results to predict field heap leaching results using the multi-mineral shrinking core model is discussed.

Spatial and temporal temperature and humidity variations for 5000 years are simulated in an emplacement airway within the conceptual, high-level nuclear waste repository proposed to be built at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. A multi-scale model is configured using MULTIFLUX, a thermohydrologic-ventilation code. The predicted surface temperature of most waste packages during post-closure exceed 140oC, the threshold limit known for likely localized corrosion for Alloy 22 waste package material. Small amounts of infiltration airflow through the mountain in Panel 5 are found to transport liquid water condensate to some of the waste packages emplaced along the peripheral section of the drift due to edge cooling.

The preferred orientation and earing characteristics of ZS aluminum were studied. An empirical correlation was obtained relating earing behavior and variation of mechanical properties for face-centered cubic metals. Strain-ratio mecsurements for ZS were found to be in good agreement with Hill's theory of plastic anisotropy. DIRECTIONALITY in sheet metals may be revealed by earing in a cupping test, or by the variation of mechanical properties of tensile specimens taken at different angles to the rolling direction. However, no simple correlation appears to exist between earing and variation in mechanical properties in metals and alloys studied.1-5 Aluminum of commercial purity (known as 2S, with a specified minimum of 99.0 pct Al) cast by the direct casting process was chosen in the present investigation since ears at 45° or 0°, 90° can readily be obtained. Preferred orientation is often the principal cause of uneven metal flow, such as earing, and variation in mechanical properties. Consequently, the preferred orientation characteristics of 2s aluminum were initially studied using both X-ray diffraction and micrographic techniques. The variation of mechanical properties with angle to the rolling direction was next determined in an effort to clarify the apparent lack of correlation of earing behavior with mechanical properties for face-centered cubic metals. Strain-ratio*5,8 measurements were finally conducted to determine first, if the maximum values of the strain ratio occurred at the earing positions, and second, if Hill's theory of plastic anisotropy7 is applicable to other face-centered cubic metals such as aluminum. Detailed treatments, working, and heat treating are not given in this paper since this study is not concerned with the methods to produce earing, but to correlate earing with other properties and characteristics of the material. The percentage of earing was measured using the formula specified by the x—Y Aluminum Association, -------- X 100 = pct earing, where x is the height of the ear and y is the height of the valley from the bottom of the cup. Preferred Orientation Characteristics of 2S X-ray Studies: Beck and coworkers8 have determined that the rolling texture of 2s after 95 pct cold reduction may be approximately described by four equivalent ideal orientations near (123) [121]. Also, the recrystallization or annealing texture of 2s aluminum consists of four components of the (123) [l21] type, retained from the rolling texture, and of a (100) [001] or cube texture component." Fig. 1 illustrates the typical appearance of deep drawn earing cups with the corresponding X-ray diffraction patterns. The X-ray patterns were taken with copper radiation using the structure-integrating method'" in which the specimen is scanned during the X-ray exposure. The rolling direction was vertical and the rolling plane was perpendicular to the horizontal X-ray beam. It was found that an increase in the retained rolling texture component resulted in a greater 45" ear height, while an increase in the recrystallization texture component (i.e., cube texture) caused greater 0°, 90° earing. X-ray diffraction studies of 2s cold rolled to final thickness followed by a final anneal have shown that the rolling texture, and also the retained component of the rolling texture after annealing, are increased with greater cold-rolling reduction. The preferred orientation characteristics of 2s sheets given an intermediate anneal between cold rolling followed by a final anneal were found to depend on the position of the intermediate anneal during cold rolling. For instance, three identical samples of 2s homogenized ingot, each 1 in. thick, were given the following cold-rolling and annealing treatments: 1—50 pct reduction, intermediate anneal, 96 pct reduction to 0.020 in. and a final anneal; 2—75 pct reduction, intermediate anneal, 92 pct reduction to 0.020 in. and a final anneal; and 3—90 pct reduction, intermediate anneal, 80 pct reduction to 0.020 in. and a final anneal. The intermediate and final annealing treatments consisted of a 70°F per hr heating rate, held 6 hr at 800°F and air cooled. Typical X-ray patterns after each of these treatments are shown in Fig. 2. The application of computers to materials handling problems has recently been investigated by various mining groups. This approach has been found, especially useful where a large amount of alternatives must be investigated prior to arriving at a final decision. These alternatives may be expressed in terms of man hours, units and types of equipment such as trucks or conveyors, or the allocation and operation of proposed or existing haulage facilities. The decision problem becomes especially evident when we consider the mechanical revolution which has flooded the mining industry in recent years. The industry has become highly competitive, with the need to keep low profit materials away from high cost production faces ever increasing. The capital investment required for the highly sophisticated equipment that is necessary to perform this function is generally great, and management is faced with decisions which must all too often be made without sufficient data.

Australia has an enviable global reputation as a leader in health and safety outcomes in the hazardous industry of mining, in part due to an increased application of risk management regarding operational planning and mining practice. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) initiated a major project, RISKGATE, to build, capture and deliver a national body of knowledge to assist companies with the management of risk in coal mining. The online system contains information for tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives underground, explosives open cut, manual tasks, slips/trips/falls, outbursts, coal bumps and bursts, human–machine interface, tailings dams, occupational hygiene and inrush. In 2014, RISKGATE is developing content for fitness for work (fatigue, drugs, alcohol, physical well-being, psychosocial well-being).This paper analyses underground mining fatalities in Australia and the United States since 2002 and introduces RISKGATE with a focus on the knowledge base for management of hazards in underground operations. Through capturing coal industry expert operational knowledge, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover within the mining industry. Hydraulic Transportation of Phosphate Ore from, a 40,000 Cubic Yard per Day Strip Mine IMC is transporting 1500 yards per hour of phosphate ore in a water slurry a distance of approximately five miles from a strip mine to a flotation beneficiation plant at their Noralyn Operation. in Barrow, Florida. This ore, which consists of approximately 1/4 phosphate, 1/2 silica sand, and 1/4 clay slimes, is being pumped through a 20 inch O. D. pipeline using seven 20 and 18 inch GIW metal pumps direct connected to electric, motors. This paper details some of the problems involved and the specific methods used to accomplish this bulk material handling requirement.

An innovative process to treat transition metal oxide waste materials from diverse sources is presented. This technology involves using reverse-polarity DC plasma driven electrolysis in molten oxides. The process results in the recovery of the transition metal and other heavy metals from waste. By-products generated throughout the processing was converted to environmentally acceptable slag. The significance of this technology is that the treatment of the waste is accomplished in one step which in turn lowers the cost of remediation. Moreover, this process uses high temperature properties of thermal plasmas, which makes it possible to use molten oxides instead of halides as electrolytes. Chromium was successfully reduced from chromium oxide through the plasma driven electro-reduction process. It was shown that the selection of the appropriate ionic conducting oxides was critical for the formation of a slag that would enhance the reduction of chromium oxide.

THE Taka oil field is in the northern part of Titus and Franklin Counties, in north- eastern Texas. The small town of Talco, from which the field derives its name, is on the P. & Mt. P. R. R., about 15 mi. north of Mt. Pleasant, the county seat of Titus County. The oil field extends east and west from the town of Talco, the approximate center. In May, 1924, R. L. Cannon, while doing surface geology for the Humble. Oil & Refining Co., mapped the surface trace of this fault structure as evidenced by Upper Midway faulted down against Lower Midway. In the interval of sixteen years between the original surface work and the recent productive well completion, approximately eight wells were drilled into the Woodbine sand without success. The Rocklands copper project is a multilode, iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) + cobalt mineralised system located in the Eastern Fold Belt of the Mt Isa Inlier. Rocklands orebodies cover a range of oxidation zones from oxide, to supergene and primary. Each zone contains different economic minerals of interest. The supergene zones contain significant amounts of native copper and the primary zones are dominated by chalcopyrite. The juxtaposition of these oxidation zones and minerals make it an interesting mineralisation system.Current mine production sampling collects a nominal 3 kg drill chip sample from a 1 m composite, RC drilled interval. A site specific sampling procedure was needed to quantify introduced sampling error when taking grade control samples. Due to oxidation and mineralogical variation in ore zones we needed to develop a practically achievable sampling methodology that ensures minimum sample mass and sample error requirements are achieved to ensure ‘representative’ samples for all ore types.These issues are planned to be resolved using an experimentally derived method using principles from the Theory of Sampling. This method uses an experimental calibration of parameters K and a for Gy’s fundamental sampling error formula using a modified 32-piece sampling tree experiment to compile sampling nomograms for the primary and supergene ores. This paper demonstrates the process undertaken to improve the quality and standard of existing mine production sampling procedures at the Rocklands operation.Results indicate a sample mass of 5 kg for RC drill chips is appropriate for both the primary and supergene ores to achieve a fundamental error below 0.01 or 10 per cent relative error, which is slightly higher than the existing sampling protocol of 3 kg. An additional experiment is recommended to compile sampling nomograms using the exact laboratory comminution and mass reduction stage information to assess the use of a 3 kg sample. The results also indicate no changes are required to existing sampling protocols when sampling RC drill chips in primary and supergene ore at Rocklands.Sampling nomogram results also provide a useful ‘rule of thumb’ reference guide to other mining and exploration companies to help understand minimum sample mass requirements and sampling error during exploration drilling, resource evaluation and mining production stages when targeting similar IOCG mineralised systems. A sample mass of 5 kg is recommended when RC drilling similarly IOCG mineralised prospects and deposits in the Cloncurry area. In this paper, it is proposed to outline a method for the determination of melting points of those metals and alloys having high fusion temperatures. The application of the method as used to determine the melting points of alloys of tungsten and molybdenum will be given. It will be seen from these results that tungsten and molybdenum form a completely isomorphous series. This is also verified by the accompanying photomicrographs. Tungsten and molybdenum have been found to crystallize in the same system namely, isometric, and the crystal units are cubes. These determinations were made by examining etching pits in the pure metals.

Following the success of the West Ore Zone distress mass blast in 2001 at Brunswick Mine, a similar approach was taken to distress the North Regional Pillar (NRP) which contained over 3 million tonnes of high grade ore. The NRP is located on the 1000 m Level with very poor hanging-wall (H/W) rock mass qualities. After an extensive geotechnical review, the distress slot is located close to the foot-wall (F/W) of the NRP in order to have the competent ore as H/W. The longitudinal area to distress covers 115 m along the strike and 85 m high from 1000 1-sub to 850 Sill. Prior to the final mass blast, 3 voids were created to allow rock swelling: the North void, the South void and the trench just below the mass blast. After over one year of preparation, the mass blast of 202,000 tonnes was successfully initiated on February 7, 2003 with 1561 electronic detonators and 210,000 kg of emulsion explosives. The blast achieved its objective of distressing the NRP as indicated the mine-wide micro-seismic monitoring system. This paper describes different stages of the project from void preparation to the mass blast itself, as well as some detailed aspects such as muck-pile prediction for mucking sequence with the help of DMC_Blast simulation code and electronic detonators.
