THE luncheon of the Milling Methods Committee in the Engineers' Club, on Feb. 16, was distinctly a social affair, although several matters of a non-milling nature were fruitfully discussed. The session* on Milling Methods, the same afternoon, attracted a gathering which overtaxed the capacity of the Board Room on the fifteenth floor. Galen H. Clevenger presided, with the moral reinforcement of Charles Butters. As all papers were available in printed form, and since synopses have appeared in MINING & METALLURGY, it is unnecessary to cover the contents of each in detail here. The first paper (T. P. 410), by Leaver and Woolf, on the "Flotation of Minor Gold in Large-scale Copper "Concentrators," was excellently summarized by R. S. Dean of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, who stressed the -very definite action of lime as a depressant of gold, and showed how the authors had worked out the best conditions of alkalinity, pH concentration and reagents for -optimum recovery of gold along with base metals, especially where lime had to be used to depress pyrite. No discussion was evoked.

Aeration in water slurries and controlled drying of manganous hydroxide produced from dithionate leaching of Artillery Peak manganese ores from Arizona were investigated by the Bureau of Mines at its Electrometallurgical Experiment Station, Boulder City, Nev., to determine whether a simple process could be developed for converting this product into a battery-grade manganese dioxide. The properties of manganese dioxide prepared by the thermal decomposition of manganous nitrate were investigated also. Manganese dioxide suitable for use in batteries was not obtained from the dithionate leach product, but some of the factors controlling its oxidation were isolated. Aging of manganous hydroxide was of major importance in retarding its oxidation by aeration. Sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate promoted oxidation by drying. Optimum quantities were about 0.85 mol of sodium hydroxide and 0.2 mol of sodium silicate per mol of manganese, and drying temperatures of 200° C. produced yields of manganese dioxide up to 90 percent of the manganese present. Higher temperatures and concentrations of reagents carried oxidation of manganese beyond its tetravalent state.

This paper discusses the mineralogy and metallurgy of the Kuroko-style volcanogenic massive sulfide ores mined at Formosa Exploration Inc. I s Silver Butte Mine located in southwest Oregon. The principle ore type is pyrite + chalcopyrite + sphalerite, while subsidiary pyrite + bornite + sphalerite ore is also mined. The two styles of mineralization have distinctly different metallurgical behaviors and must be treated separately. Selective flotation methods are used to produce copper and zinc concentrates from the first ore type, while bulk concentrates are produced from the bornite ore. Careful mine planning and coordination between the mine and mill are utilized to achieve optimal recoveries.

WHATEVER the outcome of the Industrial Recovery Act, it has currently injected the first hope and optimism into the coal industry for more than a decade. Compared with the recent drab years the results are impressive: Bituminous production for the first ten weeks, 78,000,000 tons, may be compared with 63,000,000 last year; anthracite, 14,600,000 tons and 9,600,000 tons for the same periods, respectively, bringing the heaviest payrolls in ten years with individual checks reminiscent of former boom times. Hurried calls for long deferred new equipment and replacements have stimulated foundry and machine works and the -invigorating effect on the railroads is indicated by the first actual car shortage in a decade. And even in the welter of confusion over code prices, this heavy tonnage has moved at the most profitable figure the coal man has realized for many years, though with the large volume on old contracts, profits were not as large as many think.\

"This paper discusses how an existing grey cast iron segmental tunnel lining responds to construction of a new SCL tunnel transversely beneath with zero clearance; how the damage assessment for the existing tunnel was conducted for impact of longitudinal movement; how the tunnel is subsequently instrumented to observe both movement and stress manifestation at its longitudinal connections and how the results from the instruments compare with the prediction. An assessment of neutral axis of the tunnel in longitudinal flexure is also explored using interpolated horizontal displacement data from a conventional monitoring system. INTRODUCTION The Royal Mail Tunnel (RMT) (formely Post Office Tunnel or ‘Mailrail’) was constructed using semi-mechanised deep level construction techniques from 1914 and 1917 (Lee 1938). Commencing full commercial operation in 1926, the system was until 2003; conveying parcels the 6.5 miles between seven sorting offices in the center of London, and linking the system with main line rail stations, Paddington and Liverpool Street (The British Postal Museum & Archive 2013). A single tunnel of 2.74m internal diameter facilitated a bi-directional twin narrow-gauge (~611mm gauge) railway road system for electric driverless operation. The tunnel lining is segmental grey cast iron (grade 10) made up of six flanged segments and a smaller flanged key segment; constructed into a ring of width 508mm The external diameter of the tunnel is 2.971m. For further details of the tunnel lining and material properties are outlined by (Devriendt & Alhaddad 2014).London Underground Bond Street Station is a major station of the London Underground system in the very center of London; in its vicinity, the RMT runs west-east perpendicularly above the north south Jubilee Line tunnels. Historic survey record of the Jubilee Line’s (the then Fleet Line) construction in 1974 and its impact on the RMT case is documented in (Crossrail 1993): it is one of only a hand full of case-studies frequently cited when assessing the impact of new construction scenarios of this type; not least including the assessment of the same tunnel, at the same site some 40 years later, and the subject material for this paper: It noted significant vertical displacement of ~90mm to the RMT without noticeable serviceability or operational impediment."

Canadian open pits are highly mechanized and use state of the art equipment and support technology. During the past few years significant productivity improvements have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment; in pit crushing and conveying; truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments in Canadian Open-pit Mining are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of Global Positioning Systems. Mine planning is computerized; environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning; equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian North.

"IntroductionThe published information concerning treatment of uranium ores has been very limited as far as Canadian ores are concerned. Such information has dealt mainly with refining processes for concentrates or rich ores, designed to recover radium rather than uranium; these methods could not be economically applied to low-grade ores.The purpose of this paper is to describe treatment possibilities for some of the .ores that have been treated at the Mines Branch, and .to show how the character of these ores influences methods and results.What is a Uranium Ore?Prospecting for uranium has been extremely active during the past two years and a great many occurrences of radioactive minerals have been recorded. Such prospecting has been based to a large extent on the use of the Geiger counter in the fie1d. This equipment is an invaluable aid when the results are properly interpreted.Most definitely, indications of high radioactivity do not always prove the presence of a valuable orebody. First we have to determine:(1) Is the radioactivity due to uranium or to thorium. There is no immediate market for thorium.(2) Can the uranium in the ore be economically recovered.Chemical analysis is the most exact method of determining uranium content, but a fair estimate of the uranium, and also of the thorium, content can be made from the difference in gamma and beta activity. The Mines Branch guards against misinterpretation by determining both beta and gamma activities and, if more than a minor amount of thorium is indicated, then a Chemical analysis is made."

The purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the lower part of the austenite transformation diagram, or TTT curves, where considerable uncertainty still exists as to the blending of the bainite and martensite reactions. The dissimilarities between these two low temperature transforrnations have been summarized recently by Troiano and Greninger.' Of particular importance to the present work is the fact that martensite formation, unlike bainite formation, is not suppressed by the fastest quenching rates attainable. However, most of the investigations in this direction have been concerned primarily with the start of the martensite transformation (Mg) during cooling, rather than with the quantitative aspects of the subsequent reaction on either further cooling or isothermal holding. Several years ago, Cohen2 suggested a form of transformation diagram which reconciled, at least schematically, the isothermal characteristics of the bainite transformation with the insuppressible nature of the martensite transformation. In essence, the diagram consisted of a family of horizontal lines (representing the progress of the austenite-martensite reaction during quenching) which were interrupted in point of time by the bainite family of C-curves extending down from higher temperatures. This picture received later support by metal-lographic3 and dilatometric4,5 studies, but the techniques employed were not sufficiently critical to substantiate some of the details. Elmendorf6 and Grange and Stewardi have shown that the Greninger-Troiano metallographic technique8 may be used not only for M, determinations, but for studying the course of further austenite decomposition. In fact, the latter investigators have observed the amount of martensite formed as a function of temperature below M, in fourteen commercial steels. In the present paper, the Greninger-Troiano technique has been combined with the lineal method of Howard and Cohen9 to provide a unique, quantitative treatment of the austenite-martensite reaction. Furthermore, isothermal transformations have been similarly measured on holding at temperatures above and below M., thus permitting a fairly detailed presentation of the lower part of the conventional austenite transformation diagram. Experimental Details Materials The steels, listed in Table I, were selected for study because they exhibit a satisfactory range of M. temperatures and have not received as much attention as the lower carbon grades. The Campamento Au/Ag deposit, discovered by Linear Gold in 2004, is located in Chiapas State, southern Mexico. The deposit is hosted by a sequence of Pleistocene-Pliocene andesitic volcanic rocks that have been intruded by a feldspar-phyric porphyry complex. Measured and indicated resources are 852 000 oz Au and 3.46 million ounces Ag with inferred resources of 374 000 ounces Au and 920 000 oz Ag. Resources were estimated at a 1.0 g/t Au equivalent cut-off. This is an ABSTRACT only. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.

The floatability of coal is affected by the presence of dissolved inorganic ions in plant process water. Water quality is characterized in terms of conductivity, hardness, turbidity and composition of oil. These quality indices are correlated with coal flotation performance for three different water named, ?R&D laboratory tap water?, ?process untreated water? from West Bokaro wahsey-2 Tata Steel, India and ?process treated water? after passing laboratory developed treatment process. The study clearly indicated that a significant quantity of clean coal is being lost due to poor process water quality used in the flotation process. The laboratory investigations showed that if these dissolved salts and suspended solids are reduced to even 50%, a clean coal yield improvement by minimum 5%~10% at the same ash level could be expected. Therefore, the conventional practice of water recycling though a thickener or a tailings pond needs a complete re-look. The water treatment process for recycled water has also been discussed for improving the process water quality as well as enhancement in flotation performance efficiency.

Due to varying and complex mineralogy, the flotation tailings from the Chingola Concentrator have, for some years, contained upwards of 0.4% acid soluble copper. In 1968, an investigation was initiated, to determine a method for recovering this acid soluble copper. This initial investigation concluded with a recommendation to install a leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning plant at Chingola, to treat up to 900 000 tonnes of material per month, for an additional copper production of some 4 500 tonnes per month. The process consists basically of six stages :- Materials reclamation handling and preparation, acid leaching in air agitated pachucas, solid-liquid separation by countercurrent washing in thickeners, solution concentration and purification by solvent extraction, copper recovery by electrowinning, and residue neutralisation and disposal. This paper describes the development of the main parameters for design of each of the six sections, and gives details of the final plant design. Problems encountered in commissioning and initial operations are commented on, particularly insofar as they indicated any errors or misjudgements in the design. The choice of materials of construction is commented on in some detail.

These iron mines of Spain are located on the mountain ridge forming the boundary between the Teruel and Guadalajara provinces, called Sierra Menera. They form a property of 25 mines extending over an area of 1,677 hectares (4,140 acres) situated at a height varying from 1,200 m. (3,940 ft.) to 1,500 m. (4,920 ft.) above sea level. The deposit follows the direction north to south; huge masses of ore are being found both on the slopes and at the summit of the Sierra. The ore occurs among quartzites and magnesite limestone, in some places overlaid by quartzite 15 m. (50 ft.) thick; in some others (and this is more general) the ore is overlaid by earth and boulders of quartzite origin; this layer is about 8 m. (26 ft.) thick. The ore beds occupy the geological horizon of the Superior Trias or Muschelkask, which are here in direct contact with the Silurian quartzites. The lime-stones have been more or less transformed. There is ample evidence to show that these mines were worked in very ancient times—objects and tools employed in mining by the ancient Romans and Arabs are to be found plentifully in old workinigs which extend down into the deposits. It has been estimated that more than 10,000,000 tons of ore were mined in the old days in this district and carried to the primitive forges in the vicinity where iron of much renown in Spain was extracted. Remains of more than 20 of these forges are found in the neighborhood of Sierra Menera and are usually situated near waterfalls and forests. Much investigation has been carried on for the purpose of determining the quantity of ore to be found in these mines, but no exact calculations can be made at present. When the investigation is completed it will surely be found that the deposit contains a much larger quantity than the 100,000,000 tons indicated by the present workings. The mines are now worked as open quarries and this method can and will be followed for a long time, probably until the deposit is worked out. Figs. 1 and 2 give some idea of the quarries in operation and the reserves, the iron-ore stocks, screening installation and general arrangement. By monitoring the capacitance of abrupt p-n junctions it is possible to follow the motion of substitu-tional impurities. A p-n junction is formed by growth of silicon from an Al-Si alloy on an n-type silicon sutstrate at a temperature in the range 650" to 750°C. The diodes are etched and sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed to various temperatltres for 10 mm and the capacitance remeasnred. For very heavily doped diodes (-1019 per cm3) observable capacitance changes occur at neutron fluences of >1015 per cm 3. The results may be interpreted in seceral ways, the simplest of which is to assume simple vacancy diffiision with small impurity -racancy interaction (at the diffiision, i.e. annealing temperature of 700°C). In this interpretation it is found that a typical vacancy makes about 1024 jumps and travels about 10-5 cm before disappearing. The required effective annihilation center density is about 1016per cm3 . Estimates of the vacancy-impurity interaction can be made and the above numbers correctecl, but for arty reasonable assumptions the number of vacancy sinks connot be much reduced. ThE complete annealing of radiation induced defects requires that the vacancies and interstitials either recombine, travel to the surface of the crystal, or travel to an annihilation center, e.g., a dislocation or a precipitate. If the interstitial is ignored except as a possible vacancy annihilation center at low temperatures,* the motion of vacancies may be followed by monitoring the corresponding motion of substitutional impurities. pfister2 has measured the enhanced diffusion of impurities in an asymmetric shallow diffused silicon structure by optically monitoring the junction movement. In these experiments we monitor instead the capacitance of a heavily-doped deep symmetric p-n junction. The sensitivity for this method is several orders of magnitude higher than in Pfister's technique, mainly for two reasons: 1) the junction capacitance of a heavily-doped junction is sensitive to impurity movements in the Angstrom range* com- and 2) the junction may be far from the surface which is a major annihilation center for vacancies. THE EXPERIMENT A p-n junction is formed by the epitaxial growth of silicon from an A1-Si alloy on a silicon substrate at a temperature in the range 650° to 750°C. The technique used is the transport of an aluminum melt through a temperature gradient.4 A 10-mil thick aluminum disc is sandwiched between two silicon wafers and the assembly raised to about 650° C with a temperature gradient normal to the sandwich. After about 8 hr the upper (hotter) wafer has been entirely transported and deposited epitaxially on the substrate wafer. The substrate and overgrowth resistivity are measured with a 4-point probe. The as-grown structure is lapped until the wafer is about 1/2 mm thick with the junction in the center. Contacts consisting of electroless nickel covered by electroplated rhodium are applied to both the p and n sides. The wafer is diced into square dice 1/2 to 1 mm on a side and the dice are etched sufficiently to remove approximately 1 mil of silicon. The following results are all for aluminum (p-side) and antimony (n-side) doped specimens with NA =3x 1018 per cm3, ND = 2-8 x 101A per cm3. The diodes are sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed and the capacitance remeasured. A special capacitance measurement method is used to insure a low sensitivity to shunt resistance. The diode is voltage driven and the current monitored by a phase lock amplifier. It is possible to adjust the detector phase to a point where shunt resistances as low as 100 O have no effect on the reading. The diodes in this study have a capacitance in the range 1000 to 5000 picofarads and a shunt resistance in the range 100 to l06 O depending on the stage of the anneal. THEORY The theoretical problem is twofold: 1) The computation of the amount of impurity diffusion and hence the impurity profile resulting from a given amount of vacancy motion, and 2) the computation of the capacitance from the impurity profile. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental capacitance (in particular the changes) yields the amount of vacancy motion. Vacancy Motion. A convenient parameter to measure the total amount of vacancy motion is Jv the total number of vacancy jumps per unit volume. Although this parameter varies with position in the crystal, owing to vacancy annihilation at the surfaces, it is approximately independent of position far from the surfaces, i.e. in the junction region. In terms of the number of vacancies per unit volume Nv and the vacancy diffusivity given by

The lanthanon compounds are becoming increasingly more important for ceramic and allied applications. As the supply increases and the cost decreases, further development of these interesting materials will undoubtedly lead to new applications and an increased demand. Recent improvements in separation processes have lead to high purity in the individual lanthanon oxides. This report includes short discussions on the mineralogy of the ores as raw materials, and on the separation processes required to produce the pure individual lanthanon oxides in useful quantities. To discuss the presently known applications of lanthanon oxides, this general review is divided into the following categories: A. Glasses, Glazes, and Porcelain Enamels. B. Refractories and Abrasives. C. Electronic Ceramics. D. Nuclear Ceramics.

A computer program for calculating the illumination on coal mine surfaces due to machine-mounted lights is described. Utilizing numerical models of mining machinery and measured data on luminaire output characteristics, the program computes the ft-candle levels incident on the mine entry surfaces for any desired machine/luminaire/ entry configuration. Shadowing effects of the machine are taken into account. Results are provided at 2 ft. intervals on the face, left and right walls, floor and roof. To provide a data base for these calculations, eleven 3-D machine models were prepared and the outputs of three luminaire types were measured. Calculations were done for thirty different configurations.

Sutter Gold Venture excavated an exploration decline into a mineralized zone in the Sutter Creek gold mining district. Delays in obtaining the conditional-use permit resulted in 7 to 10 million gallons of water accumulation in the decline containing elevated dissolved arsenic. Sutter received a permit to land apply the water after reducing the arsenic concentration to 0.05 mg/L. Initially the water was treated by co- precipitation arsenic with ferric hydroxide. Operational difficulties of this treatment system resulted in Sutter pursuing alternative treatment methods. The activated alumina adsorpting was selected due to its flexibility and ease of operation. Operating and maintenance data and costs will be presented.

Chemical metathesis and electrochemical reductive conversion of chalcopyrite in the presence of cupric ions were studied in sulfuric acid solutions for temperatures up to 90°C. The process results in the displacement of iron in the chalcopyrite lattice by copper ions with rejection of ferrous ions to the aqueous phase. The rate of reaction was found to be very slow, requiring subsieve-sized particles for extensive reaction to occur. The reaction was insensitive to copper ion concentration. Stirred ball milling of chalcopyrite introduces lattice strain. The reaction rate with strained particles was markedly higher than with annealed chalcopyrite. The reaction rate was found to be diffusion-limited, showing two distinct reaction stages corresponding to the formation of CuS (covellite) followed by Cu1.8S (digenite). The experimental activation energy for the first stage was 102 J (24.4 kcal) and the second stage 123 3 (29.4 -kcal) per mole. The rate-controlling process is diffusion of lattice ions, probably iron. The enhanced rate after milling is attributed to a recrystallization process which provides new paths for diffusion along dislocations and grain boundaries.

This paper explores the interpretation and application of Particle Size Distribution (PSD) curves in optimizing blast design and enhancing downstream operations. The study looks at important factors like D50, D80, fines content, and the uniformity index to show how PSD curves affect the efficiency of different mining processes. The first section of this paper discusses the impact of blast design parameters such as burden, spacing, and explosive energy on the resulting PSD, highlighting their significance for downstream operations like crushing, and material handling. The section concluded that proper alignment of PSD with downstream size classes, like primary crusher inlet sizes, among others, can result in substantial cost reductions and productivity gains. The second part presents a case study from dstgroup aggregate quarry in northern Portugal, utilizing fragmentation analysis to evaluate blast performance and promote continuous improvement. The section specifically examines the effect of stemming material size on blast fragmentation, comparing the impact of using aggregate with a D80 of 12.32 mm versus a D80 of 21.94 mm. The D80 value represents the particle size at which 80% of the stemming material is smaller, making it a critical parameter in evaluating the stemming's effectiveness in confining explosive energy. The drilling and blasting designs were meticulously planned using O-PitDev and O-PitSurface software to ensure accuracy in blast parameters and layout. To assess the fragmentation resulting from these different stemming material sizes, the study utilized WipFrag 4 software. The software allowed for precise measurement of particle size distribution after the blast, as well as a detailed comparison between the two stemming sizes. Results from the analysis indicate that using bigger-sized stemming material led to improved blast confinement, which in turn resulted in better fragmentation compared to the smaller-sized material. The reviewed blast videos demonstrate that the larger aggregate effectively contained the explosive energy within the borehole, thereby reducing premature venting and directing more energy towards breaking the surrounding rock mass. This led to finer fragmentation with D80 = 1240.1 mm, D50 = 685.9, and Dmax = 2580 mm, which is advantageous in downstream operations like crushing and milling. On the other hand, the smaller stemming material (D80 = 21.94 mm) did not confine the explosive energy as efficiently, resulting in coarser fragmentation (D80 = 1327.37 mm, D50 = 750.76, and Dmax = 2370 mm) and reduced overall blast efficiency. These findings highlight the significant influence of stemming material size on blast performance and fragmentation outcomes.

Author Biography William Poole was born in Sydney, NSW in August 1868. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School. William spent two and a half years as a cadet in the Railway Construction Branch of the NSW Department of Public Works doing office and field work. He then undertook a civil engineering course at Sydney University. Following this he was employed for six years as assistant and resident engineer at the Water Conservation Branch, NSW and was in responsible charge of various field operations, surveys, river gaugings and works of constructions including a large timber weir and also a concrete weir on the Macquarie River, NSW. He then undertook a mining and metallurgical course at Sydney University and became a graduate (BE) with honours in civil engineering, mining engineering and metallurgy. He then spent four and a half years with BHP Co, one and a half years at Broken Hill in the mining and concentration works and three years at the smelting works in Port Pirie, SA, in the latter case he was metallurgist and night superintendent and during that time had responsibility and control at night of the blast furnaces and, during the last 15 months, of the whole of these large works. The author left the Port Pirie, SA works to assume the position of Director of the State School of Mines at Charters Towers and had responsible control of the establishment and also lectured in mining, surveying and structure.
