Equilibrium data are reported on the composition and densities of coexisting vapor and liquid phases as a function of Pressure and temperature for four hydrocarbon systems prepared from crude oil and natural gas. The data were observed over a range of pressures from 1000 to 8220 Ib. per sq. in. and at temperatures ranging from 35' to 250°F. The compositions of the hydrocarbon systems were such that the critical temperatures of the mixtures were lower than the range of the investigation. Under these conditions, it is shown that the composition of the systems has a marked effect upon both the absolute value of the equilibrium constants and the change of the constants with pressure for the several components comprising the system. From weight-balance considerations, it has been possible to construct the partial phase diagram of a mixture of a 49.9" A.P.I. crude oil and natural gas having a gas-oil ratio of 3660 cu. ft. per barrel. Descriptions of the apparatus used, the analytical procedure, the material used, and the equilibrium measurements are included. A knowledge of the physical behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures is fundamental to the treatment of many problems in the production, transportation and rehing of petroleum. The recent discoveries of pools having formation pressures up to 7500 lb. per sq. in. and higher, and the development of full-scale equipment to operate at pressures of 5000 lb. per sq. in. or more have greatly increased the need for knowledge of the composition, temperature, pressure and density relationships of coexisting vapor and liquid hydrocarbon phases. The following paper presents the results of investigations upon 22 mixtures of natural gas and crude oil of known com~o~itio~ that had been brought to equilibrium under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure. Data are presented upon the densities and compositions of the coexisting vapor and liquid phases for four different systems containing hydrocarbon material having boiling points from minus 2 5S°F. to well over I000 F. The data were observed Over a pressure range from Iooo Ib. per Sq. in to 8220 lb. Per sq. in. and a temperature range from 35' to 2 50°F. The effect of titania (TiO2 ) addition on the sintering performance of hematite iron ore has been studied by doping pure TiO2 into a sinter blend. The results of laboratory-scale compact sintering tests confirmed the considerable effect of TiO2 addition on sinter strength and mineralogy. The tumble index measurements confirmed an improvement in the strength of the sinter in response to TiO2 addition. The melting point of the sinter was also affected by increasing the TiO2 content, indicating a possible relationship between coke breeze consumption and TiO2 on industrial-scale sintering of Ti-bearing ores. Analysis of the sintered structures using optical and scanning electron microscopes confirmed a general improvement in the overall pore structure and sinter melt characteristics with the addition of TiO2 to the sinter blend. An important feature of the sinter structure was the formation of a perovskite phase (CaTiO3 ) and an increase in the proportion of this phase in the structure as TiO2 levels increase.CITATION:Dehghan-Manshadi, A, Manuel, J, Hapugoda, S, Ware, N and Donskoi, E, 2015. THE honor so fairly earned and so incompletely and tardily paid to Henry Cort, the inventor of the puddling-furnace and the, rolling-mill, has been fully set forth by Mr. Charles H. Morgan,1 and needs no further emphasis here. In view of the importance of the rolling-mill in the treatment of iron and steel, the paucity of information concerning it is surprising. With the exception of a hook, written about 35 years ago, by Peter Bitter von Tunner, an Honorary Member of this Institute, and of desultory articles on simple sections, which have appeared in technical journals, I know of no pub¬lication attempting to treat this subject, although volumes have been written on the scientific theory and technical manipulations involved in other branches of the iron- and steel-industry. This strange anomaly may be due to the fact that roll-turning cannot be called a scientific business. It does not ordinarily come within the range of an educated engineer; yet it cannot be performed by an ordinary mechanic. It demands some of the qualifications of an engineer, in designing, and those of a mechanic, in execution. The men who have followed this trade have controlled the training of their successors. In many cases the technical knowledge required bas been handed down from father to son, and there has been a motive of private interest to prevent its public dissemination. Moreover, the statement of the various principles involved in the process would require, besides manual experience, a degree of scientific knowledge which roll-turners do not usually possess; and, finally, any book on the subject, in order to possess real, practical value, would have to be so fully illustrated as to make it very costly to publish. "The increasing demand for underground works in urban centers, and in particular the need to build undercrossing tunnels, requires constant evolution in building techniques in order to achieve success and safety. In the case of Brasilia, capital of Brazil, in order to preserve an important avenue (Eixo Monumental), where are located many historical monuments, the construction of a tunnel was envisioned as an option to interconnect the National Stadium (on one side of the avenue) to the Convention Center Ulysses Guimarães (on the other side). The excavation design is comprised of a coverage smaller than one diameter, height of 7.5 m, width of 9.0 m and length of 25 m. In order to enable a negligible influence on the avenue’s usage, the structure is designed as a portico system composed of pipe canopy. In this context, this study presents the portico analytical solution computed with the aid of the software Mathematica and a numerical solution using the software ABAQUS. INTRODUCTION Undercrossing tunnels are increasingly common in urban centers as alternative roads or as access to underground works of large dimensions (stations and parking lots). The geomechanical conditions of the soil mass, not always favorable, and the low distance between tunnel’s ceiling and the surface require intense treatment of the soil massif and execution of a rigid support system. The importance of the road just above the undercrossing tunnel emphasizes the need for a highly competent monitoring system because existing structures require minimum allowable displacement and do not allow the interruption of traffic. The soils that are excavated for the construction of undercrossing tunnels are composed, in most cases, of layers of fill and / or soft soil or weak rock, showing stability problems when subjected to tunneling operations. The combination of low coverage and week ground is solved by soil improvement techniques and strengthening of the excavated cross-section with further advance with the so-called New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Another option is to build structural frames that support the surface. In this research, and based on the context of a case study, we propose the study of the construction technique comprising a portico structure composed of pipe canopy. For this paper, the technical standards used are the Brazilian ones as the case study refers to this country."

The extraction of nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) from the laterite deposit of Ramu nickel-cobalt Project in Papua New Guinea was performed in this study. Chemical analysis by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP-AES) atomic emission spectrometer, SPS-3000 (Seiko Instruments (Inc.), shows the ore contains 48% Fe, 1% Ni, 0.1% Co, 1.8% Al, 0.14% Mg, and 0.8% Mn. Characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the laterite ore obtained from the mine site shows the ore contains 70 to 80% goethite (FeOOH), assuming Fe content of 48% is mainly from geothite. The main leaching parameters investigated include; slurry temperature, leaching time and sulphuric acid (H2SO4) concentration to evaluate nickel and cobalt extraction. For all experiments, 10g batch samples are put into 300 ml beaker containing 100 ml of sulphuric acid of varying concentrations (1M, 2M, 4M). During the leaching period, 5 ml slurry samples are withdrawn at different times and filtered to obtain filtrate for ICP analysis to monitor nickel and cobalt extraction. Solid samples at the end of all tests are also obtained by filtration and after drying, XRD and ICP tests are performed to monitor nickel and cobalt contents. According to the test results performed at normal atmospheric pressure, over 99% of nickel and over 50% cobalt were extracted into solution within 120 min at 95ºC in 2M H2SO4 solution. Similar results were obtained when only temperature was reduced to 90ºC, but cobalt extraction increased to over 70% when leaching time was increased to 240 min. Further reduction in temperature to 80 and 60ºC resulted in reduction of nickel and cobalt extraction. At the end of each leaching test, magnetite was seen to attach to magnetic stirrer. A necessidade de treinamento é uma realidade nas indústrias. A qualificação de operadores é importante para garantir segurança e prevenir perdas econômicas. Nesse contexto, o objetivo desse trabalho é desenvolver e avaliar um simulador de treinamento de operador. O estudo de caso é um moinho vertical, comumente utilizado na indústria de cimento. Nessa direção, passou-se pela construção de um supervisório, pela modelagem e simulação dinâmica de um moinho vertical e, por fim, pela elaboração e execução de um treinamento. Para tal, foram construídos três cenários de situações anormais, além da consideração da operação normal. Ainda em relação à metodologia, treinaram-se dois grupos de alunos com métodos distintos de ensino: o primeiro recebeu apenas um treinamento teórico, através de uma apresentação multimídia; e o segundo, após esse treinamento teórico, recebeu um treinamento prático, ou seja, do tipo aprender fazendo, a partir do contato direto com o simulador de processos. De modo geral, percebeu-se que o contato com a prática possibilitou um maior entendimento da operação do moinho vertical, do grau de dependência entre as variáveis de entrada e de saída, e das variáveis utilizadas para a recuperação do processo à operação normal, contribuindo ainda para uma maior fixação do conhecimento teórico. Esse trabalho é resultado de uma parceria UniversidadeEmpresa, cujas atividades foram desenvolvidas por um grupo de alunos de graduação em Engenharia Química.

Com o estudo realizado em artigos técnicos e acadêmicos e vivência no ramo industrial, ficou evidente uma deficiência no desempenho dos sistemas de controle regulatório das plantas industriais. Parte dessa deficiência é proveniente da falta de engenheiros de controle para auditar as malhas de controle regulatório. Foi realizado em um forno de tratamento térmico, um trabalho de auditoria das malhas de controle regulatório, baseando-se em uma metodologia já existente na literatura. Levantou-se informações do processo do forno como, os controladores automáticos, o sistema de aquisição de dados e a infraestrutura de rede de automação e por seguinte, as implementações dos PID's no CLP. Após essa contextualização, métricas para avaliar o desempenho inicial das malhas foram utilizadas e então, o funcionamento dos elementos de controle utilizados no forno foram diagnosticados através de ferramental estatístico e análise dos sinais na ferramenta PIMS. Adquirido o conhecimento necessário sobre o processo e o diagnosticado de maneira concisa, ações corretivas e de otimização foram realizadas e propostas com o intuito de otimizar o desempenho das malhas de controle. Por fim, os índices de desempenho do sistema são recalculados e os valores comparados com os valores pré auditoria, concluindo que pode ser possível melhorar alguns dos principais termos adotados no negócio como redução de custos, aumento de produtividade e sustentabilidade.

Sin embargo, esta actividad puede tener un impacto significativo en el medio ambiente y en la calidad del agua subterránea, especialmente si no se toman medidas adecuadas de manejo y monitoreo de la hidrogeología local. Por esta razón, los estudios hidrogeológicos son esenciales para comprender la fase operación de la minería a tajo abierto y los efectos que con la ejecución se pueden presentar en los recursos hídricos superficiales y subterráneos, y para diseñar estrategias de mitigación, optimización y operación de los proyectos mineros.

The cathode production of Toyo Smelter and Refinery, owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. reached 450,000 tons per year in 2016 with three tank houses. Niihama tank house commenced operations in 1919 with conventional sheet cathode technology. Approximately 100 years of operation experience and the technical development enabled that the current density of Niihama tank house and the Toyo tank house #1 increased to 320 A/m2. These operation techniques were utilized at the Toyo tank house #2 which started in 2005, and its current density reached up to 350 A/m2 with permanent cathode technology. In order to achieve high current efficiency under condition of 350 A/m2 operation at Toyo tank house #2, continued efforts had been made to verticality of anodes and permanent cathodes. To improve verticality of anodes and cathodes, reduction of short circuit ratio by changing the shape of the anode, optimizing the anode pressing machine and off-line process for rectifying the distortion of permanent cathodes was carried out. In addition, concentration control of electrolyte and expansion of Ni removing ability from the electrolyte prevented passivation. Finally, more than 96% of the current efficiency was stably confirmed. INTRODUCTION Today, Toyo Smelter and Refinery of Sumitomo Metal Mining operates three tank houses in Japan, namely, Toyo tank house #1, Toyo tank house #2, and Niihama tank house with a total capacity of 450,000 metric tons of copper cathodes. Figure 1 shows the trend of cathode copper production and the current density at three tank houses over the last 10 years. Cathode production by Toyo Smelter and Refinery reached 450,000 tons per year in 2016 with three tank houses.

Dual energy X-ray transmission imaging is extensively applied for safety luggage inspection. Its advantages are its rapid scanning rate (25 to 100 cm/sec) at approximately I mm resolution and simultaneous thickness independent metal identification. This is especially advantageous for secondary scrap metal inspection and automatic sorting. Other applications include metal product inspection, bale control, and waste processing. Recent progress in development of an automatic on-line sorter for bulk solids is presented and discussed. Besides various non-metal applications (solid fuels, wastes etc.) it appeared particularly effective in light metal sorting. As inspection tool better control of difficult to monitor solid bulk streams, batteries, bales and other related metals becomes possible.

[Mr. Brown did not make his speech available for reprint.] Productivity is the Answer - Always Was; Always Will Be When Bill Balaz invited me to speak here this morning, he asked me to examine the three most important issues Consol will face over the coming decade. There are more than three. But the more I thought about that question, the more I realized all our issues come down to only one. As I reviewed the U.S. coal industry over the past ten years, and as I thought ahead into the year2000, one thing stood out. Not markets. Not government regulations. Not record tonnages. But productivity. The recent history of American coal is a tale of productivity improvement. It is a story that needs telling. And understanding. Not just for the good of the coal industry, but for the benefit of the American economy. Americans today do not appreciate the value of productivity growth. I don't say that lightly. As I review recent debate over American industrial competitiveness, as I look at certain legislative proposals, I see disturbing trends. It's not that anyone is against productivity per se. But many people seem to fear the very processes that enhance productivity. Twentieth century America enjoyed unprecedented growth in productivity. And in personal standards- of-living. Those two go together. This century has been one of change. Demographics. Education. And technology. Many new industries-cable television, computer services, telecommunications, for example-have grown from mere dreams to billion- dollar enterprises employing tens-of-thousands. And some older industries have declined. The nature of work has changed-from manual work to know- ledge work. From agriculture, to manufacturing, to services. In the mid-1960s. AT&T employed more than one million people. These were not high-paying jobs: telephone operators, linemen and equipment assemblers. Today, the successor Bell companies and their new competitors employ no more than a few hundred thousand. Because of automation. Because of enormous gains in employee productivity.

As the use of deep -rut mining increases, there - expected to be a greater demand for methane (CH,) measurement devices capable of scanning working faces al depths in excess of 10 m to alert mine personnel of hazardous concentrations of CH and to satisfy regulatory requirements. Remote optical devices offer the most promise to satisfy these objectives while the operator remains safely under supported roof. A second¬-generation remote Optical methanomeor (ROM) bas been designed and Is undergoing laboratory evaluation at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. It operates on the principle of differential absorption of the "u;' fundamental absorption band of CH, centered at 3.31 um in the infrared region of the spectrum. The new instrument differs from the previous prototypes by the replacement of the two hand pass differential absorption technique of measurement with a single filter gas correlation technique and a refinement of the amplifier and gating circuitry used within the unit. This results in a more accurate isolation of the CH, spectral absorption band centered at 3.31 um. A specially designed 0.4m-diam variable-length gas mixing tunnel was constructed and instrumented with CH4 sampling capability to calibrate the ROM. Experiments have demonstrated the ability of the detector to respond to various conditions of CH, (pn•m) at distances as great as 12 m. Thermal radiation generated within the instrument is the controlling factor in the drift of the output signal nod, therefore the reliability of the instrument. Several approaches to reduce this extraneous radiation interfering moth the infrared detector, described, such as the installation of a fan in the instrument and thermoelectric coolers on the detector's beat sink. Implementation of this technology will significantly improve the safely of miners.

Siendo la veta principal San Cristóbal, una de las estructuras que atraviesan el Anticlinal Chumpe en la provincia de Yauli, su explotación ha sido limitada a las rocas volcánicas y filitas en el flanco sur-oeste del anticlinal. Por tal motivo, el texto señala que el análisis de la distribución de los metales y minerales dentro de la veta, revela un zoneamiento horizontal bien definido, que es compatible con el origen de las soluciones hidrotermales en el centro del anticlinal. Asimismo, este estudio cuantitativo determina las características de las partes ricas de la veta, trazando líneas de contornos de los cuatro tipos de metal en secciones longitudinales, como los controles de la distribución de metal y relaciona las áreas ricas de la veta con su medio geológico. De otro lado, en San Cristóbal, la distribución del metal presenta una característica zonal donde la paragénesis y el zoneamiento están íntimamente relacionados. Concluyéndose que con la aplicación de los resultados de este estudio, se permitirá una mejor exploración y desarrollo de las áreas ricas de la Veta Principal San Cristóbal y se proporcionará una guía útil para la exploración y desarrollo de vetas paralelas en esta área.

Eighty feet of overburden, thirty feet consisting of fine, water-bearing sands, was encountered during the construction of a shaft collar for Chimo Gold Mines Limited at its Louvicourt, Quebec, property. This paper describes the excavation and construction methods used on the project. Open-cut methods, a sheet pile cofferdam, chemical grouting and special blasting methods were used during excavation. Concrete placement was hampered in the lower portion by a heavy water flow, and aided in the upper portion by an unusual method of form bracing. Plant and • pum11ing facilities are also described.

DEGOLYER, our new president, though a petroleum geologist by profession, has always s been associated with mining, for soon after his birth at Greensburg, Kan., on Oct. 9, 1886, his parents moved to Joplin, and when he went, in the course of time, to the University of Oklahoma, he intended to follow his course there with another at a mining school. He became a field assistant in the U. S. Geo-logical Survey, however, while still an undergradu-ate, and after field experi- ence in Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, Colorado and Oklahoma, he went to Mexico as geologist for the Mexican Eagle Oil Co. This was in 1909, and as a result he was unable to complete his work for his degree until 1911. In Mexico, he located the Potrero de Llaño No. 4, one of the world's largest oil wells, and also the dis- covery well in the Naran- jos pool; and the Colorado School of Mines conferred the honorary degree of : Doctor of Science on him in 1925. On his return from Mexico, he engaged in the consulting business, specializing in financial ap- praisement, the Union and Marland companies being among his clients. In 1919, he organized the Amerada Petroleum Co., with the backing of Lord Cowdray. Last year, control of the company was purchased by an American group, headed by Dillon, Read and Co. Mr. DeGolyer is n o w president of the company. He is also vice-president and general manager of the Rycade Corp, the Rycade Oil Corp., and president of the Geophysical Re-search search Corp. The l a t t e r represents the practical appli-cation of his inter-est in the use of the torsion balance in the locating of salt domes, in which he has pioneered, the Nash dome being the first oil field in America actually brought into production by these methods.
