The panic bars (and associated linkage's and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on Self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and soma commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in 'Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is dedicated to achieving "safety and health at work for all people -- through research and prevention." An important procedure in pursuing this goal is the NIOSH surveillance studies where the number of injuries are monitored according to demographic, employment, and injury characteristics. These numeric data are then used to identify injury risk factors, develop safety programs, and monitor implemented remediation methods. In essence, ongoing surveillance data form the bases for directing the resources of NIOSH in setting of research and prevention priorities, and in evaluating safety procedures. This surveillance techmque, which is based on the Public Health Service approach to identification and control of disease (1, 2, has been used quite successfully in dealing with relatively high number injuries such as hearing loss, musculoskeletal disorder, respiratory disorder, falls, etc. (2). However a problem arises when extending this paradigm to lower frequency traumatic events; particularly those often referred to as disasters (i.e., high impact events like mine explosions, airplane crashes, etc.). One can ask the question - there hasn't been a coal mine fire fatality in the U.S. for over ten years, to what extent should we be concerned with mine fire safety (resource-wise)? - The National Traumatic Occupational Fatalities (NTOF) system (4J which NIOSH uses to survey occupational fatalities annually, would suggest that underground mine fires would not be a high priority item in occupational safety. Yet, miners' (i.e., the exposed workers) do consider mine fires and explosions to be major safety concerns. I believe that we need to rethink our evaluation of work place disasters, what is worker exposure, and what are the underlying assumptions (both explicit and implicit) as to the impact that economic, societal and degree of hazard factors make on risk evaluation. The answers to all these problems, will require much broader considerations than those in current surveillance safety and health models. This paper discusses some facets of those considerations.

Evidence will be presented to show that borescope inspection of mine roofs is one of the most useful techniques available for stability assessments. ACIRL currently has four borescopes, comprising two fibre-optic units of 2.7 m and 4.5 m length and two optical rod units (introscopes) 6 m and 8 m in length. (The 8 m unit is not yet fully operational because of modifications needed to meet safety regulations). Using the fibre-optic units, photographs of hole walls or ends can be taken to record features. Roof lithology and crack patterns can be observed in roof holes from 25 - 60 mm in diameter. Several crack parameters are useful: type, location in the roof with respect to height and lithological boundaries, presence of individuals or zones containing crack clusters and the estimated amount of dilation. These data are readily computer- plotted to form "borescope logs". Provided that the holes remain open, a hole or group of holes can be re-surveyed at intervals to monitor crack development across or along a roadway, for example with respect to an advancing blind-ended roadway face.

The quasi-binary systems "VFe3"—VCo,—VNi,— "VCu3"and "TiFe3"—TiCo3,—TiNi3-"TiCu3"have been studied by a combination of microscopic and X-ray methods. Of the Phases encountered, eleven had close-packed ordered layer structures. Within each system, there is an approximately linear variation of the degree of hexagonality of the stacking arrangement with electron concentration, e/a. A study of eighty -four known examples of AB3 structures in transition metal alloys indicates that at e/a = 8.65 the ordered structure of the close -packed layers changes from "triangular" (AuCu3 type) to "rectangular" (SbCu3 type). At e/a < 8.65, the slope of hexagonality us e/a line increases with the group number of the A component. An interesting series of close-packed ordered structures is known to exist at the composition AB3; however, their alloy chemistry has not yet been fully understood. Dwight and Beck1 observed a correlation between position of the components in the periodic table and the type of crystal structure of the binary AB2 structures formed by transition metals. No consistent effect due to atomic size was noted and they proposed that electron concentration* predominates in In the present paper, the AB3 structures are characterized by a symbol describing the stacking and a symbol specifying the ordered layer. The stacking symbol used was introduced by Zhdanov,7 and later used in the International Tables,8 and by Beck9 in his survey of possible layer stacking structures. Alternating positive and negative integers are used to represent the number of positive (e.g., in abcabc...) and negative (e.g., in cbacba...) stacking sequences. T denotes the triangular ordering found in close-packed planes of the AuCu3 structure and R the rectangular ordering found in close-packed planes of the SbCu3 structure, Figs. 3(a) and (b). The present structure symbols are listed in Table I alongside the prototypes, where known, and other structural characteristics of AB3 phases found in the present investigation. EXPERIMENTAL The starting materials were metals of 99.9+ purity. The alloys were prepared by arc melting under argon atmosphere using a nonconsumable tungsten electrode and water-cooled copper hearth. The total weight loss upon melting and subsequent annealing was always less than 0.5 pct and hence the alloys will be referred to by their intended (unanalyzed) compositions. The alloys were homogenized and annealed at suitable temperatures in the range 750" to 1200°C, the annealing periods varying from 3 days at 1200°C to 10 days at 750°C. The heat treatments were carried out in sealed silica capsules under argon atmosphere and with a molybdenum foil cover between the alloy and the walls of the capsule. The quenched alloys were microscopically examined and reduced to powder by crushing or filing. The powders were, whenever necessary, given a stress-relieving anneal at the original annealing temperature. X-ray powder patterns were obtained with an asymmetrical focusing camera, a Guinier-deWolff focusing camera, or a Debye-Scherrer camera. Cr, Co, or Cu radiations were used. In some cases, to ensure the minimum degree of contamination, the deeply etched specimens were mounted in the asymmetrical focusing camera to obtain an X-ray pattern. Judging from the progress made in August 1989, drilling and raise boring of a 400-m (1312-ft) pilot hole at the Elura mine of Pasminco Ltd. in Southeastern Australia, an observer would never guess that the project had been delayed nearly a year. Moreover, two pilot holes had been abandoned in previous attempts. The challenge was to drill a 93-mm (3.66-in.) H size exploration hole between Elura&apos;s 400- and 800-m (1312and 2624-ft) levels. The hole needed to be kept within a 300-mm-diam (12-in.diam) target cylinder over the 400 m (1312 ft) distance. The deviation restriction of the initial core hole was necessary to precision ream a pilot hole to 330 mm (13 in.) and then raise bore a 6-m-diam (20-ft-diam) shaft, planned as the primary men and materials access between the two levels. Core was not really necessary to gain an accurate geological picture of the steeply dipping formation. Rather, the core barrel was used because it tended to drill a straighter hole. Using rock bits in the steeply dipping formation would have simply aggravated the problem of deviation. The core barrel and diamond bit optimized the probability of a straighter hole. However, on the first two attempts to drill the pilot hole, the bit was out of the 300-mm (12-in.) target cylinder within the first 50 to 60 m (164 to 197 ft), and the holes were abandoned.

Water recycling is of prime importance in mineral processing due to consumption of large amount of water. This issue is vital in areas with a low rainfall such as Shahre-Babak (Kerman, Iran). Deep cone thickeners, unlike conventional thickeners, have a low diameter to height ratio where large amounts of flocculants are used to increase particles settling rates. The high bed heights (over 10 m) produce enough pressure to create a paste type underflow indicating maximum water recovery. Flocculent preparation, conditioning, and distribution along with the bed height are among the important factors affecting the performance. Four deep cones are used to recover water from the tailings of the plant. Plant data indicated that the thickener never reached the target underflow percent solids (63%) and the average underflow concentrations were between 49 and 57%. By modification and optimization of flocculent preparation and distribution methods the underflow percent solids increased by 3-4%. This translated to an increase of water recovery from 67 to 73%. The Chagres Smelter, part of the Anglo American plc group situated 80 Km north of Santiago in Chile, completed a series of operational improvement in 2005 resulting in an optimum capacity in its operational units. At present the Chagres Smelter has developed an operational strategy which seeks to reduce bottle-necks in the production process. In this way we have managed to lower operational cost, decrease energy consumption and maximize the capacity of the Acid, Oxygen, and Smelting, Converting, Refining and Casting units. A constant application of international benchmarks together with continuous staff improvement and the latest smelter technology have combined to place Chagres among the finest smelting works in the world. In response to environmental challenges, we have studying various options for investment suitable for a profitable business of benefits to both Anglo American and Chile as a whole. The most relevant technical indicators are the figures : Energy consumption less than 6,3 GJ/ton fine copper, Intensity of smelting rate in Flash Smelting unit of 6900 ton of copper concentrate/m2 settler of furnace area and be one of the top five smelter in direct cash cost .

The homogeneity and microstrcture of zone-leveled Ge-Si alloys haw been investigated by sellera1 physical techniques and by metallography as a function of growth rate in the range 3 x 10 1x10 cm-sec&apos;, and as a system of alloy composition throughout the system. The temperature gradient at the solid-liquid interface was about 50 deg-cm-&apos; Cellular or dendritic structures char-acteristic of constitutional supercooling were ob-served except at very slow growth rates, which ranged from about 2 x 10 cm -sec for Ge 1 sio alloy to about 2 X 10&apos;5 cm-sec&apos;1 for Ge .sSio.s alloy. Using a simple model similiar to that employed for dilute solid the dependence upon compo-sition over the entire system of the critical growth rate for the onset of constiutional supercooling was calculated, and was .found to he in good agreement with the experimental results. THE recent discovery of the low thermal conductivity of Ge-Si alloys&apos; at high temperatures has revealed that these alloys have high efficiencies for thermoelectric-power generation.&apos;, Therefore, a reliable method was needed for the preparation of homogeneous samples required for definitive measurements throughout this alloy system. Due to the low diffusion rates in the solid alloys, the segregated samples obtained by quenching a melt are not readily homogenized by annealing.475 However. isothermal solidification from a melt of constant composition can produce uniform material. Of the available semiconductor crystal-growth procedures, the zone-leveling technique6 applied to a complete solid-solution alloy system by Wang and Alexander&apos; and by others provides a simple method of doing this. In the present work, the homogeneity and microstructure of zone-leveled alloys have been correlated with growth conditions, and the conditions for preparing homogeneous Ge-Si alloys have been established. This has provided insight into the solidification process of alloy semiconductors. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Sample Preparation. The Ge-Si alloy phase diagram4 shown in Fig. l(a) consists of a complete series of solid solutions. The zone-leveling technique used to prepare most of the samples consists of moving a zone of liquidus composition (C1) through charge material of the corresponding solidus composition (C,), as is illustrated in Figs. l(b) and l(c). To prepare the charge materials, high-purity germanium and silicon were pulverized in a steel hammer mill, cleaned magnetically, and melted together to make uniform chill castings. The zone leveling was carried out in a resistance-heated furnace similar to that of Mitrenin et al.&apos; shown in Fig. 2. However, a few specimens of high silicon content were prepared by the Czochralski technique. The growth rate ranged from 3.5 x X6 to 1.2 X 10~3 cm-sec-&apos;. Eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs in the area of the McDermitt (Cordero) caldera began about 17.4 million yr (m.y.) ago and continued for about 1.5 m.y. During this period of silicic eruptions, a circular area about 30 km in diameter collapsed to form a caldera that subsequently filled with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. A total of more than 200 km30f silicic rocks was erupted from the volcano. The final phase of igneous activity, about 15.0 m.y. ago, included resurgent doming and intrusion in the south-central part of the caldera. Three to 4 m.y. later (-1 2 m.y. ago), hydrothermal solutions using the northern part of the caldera ring fractures as conduits deposited silica, cinnabar, pyrite, alunite, and other minerals in tuffaceous lake beds and volcanic rocks accumulated within the caldera. The ore-forming solutions may have been a residuum from the silicic magma, or connate water, or ground water heated by the still-hot resurgent magma in the central part of the caldera. The source of the mercury and other elements has not been identified.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a test procedure to compare the initiating strength of detonators by using adjustable-sensitivity liquid explosives. Various tests of detonator strength are currently used by the industry, but many of them do not quantify the ability of detonators to initiate detonation reactions in an explosive charge. The USBM used mixtures of nitromethane and ethylene diamine, the sensitivity being "fine-tuned" by 2-nitropropane. Military standard J-2, commercial No.6, and commercial No.8 detonators were evaluated using three test configurations: (1) axially immersed in the test explosive, (2) tip just touching surface of the explosive, and (3) immersed transversely in the explosive. Markedly different results were obtained for these three configurations, indicating that the directional effects are important. This explains why different detonator strength tests do not correlate well with each other. Some tests, such as the sand bomb and underwater, measure the total energy out-put, while other tests, such as the plate dent, test measure the energy in the axial direction. The USBM&apos;s test data indicate the importance of conducting the experimentation in the manner in which the detonator is actually intended to function.

In October 2023 Bauer has completed the execution of deep foundations for the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm 16 km off coast north of France. Once operational, the 496MW wind farm will generate enough clean energy for 835,000 inhabitants. Ailes Marines, owned by Iberdrola, contracted Van Oord who deployed Bauer. In total, 190 shafts have been drilled and the same number of pin piles were grouted to support 62 wind turbines, based on triple jackets, and an offshore substation, based on a four-pile jacket. Bauer did the works from Van Oord&rsquo;s offshore installation vessel called &ldquo;Aeolus&rdquo;. The Atlantic environmental conditions in combination with the extremely hard and rocky seabed and high requirements to geometrical tolerances and other key quality indicators challenged the contractor&rsquo;s expertise and equipment in several ways. The paper shall illustrate the planning, execution and particular solutions to meet the client&rsquo;s demands to their full satisfaction. First of all, an innovative drilling method was used to install the foundations for which project-specific &ldquo;dive drills&rdquo; were engineered and constructed by Bauer. Secondly, the underwater survey tasks needed smart solutions and skilled personnel to prove the accurate final position of the pin piles. The survey must ensure the precise position of the newly designed drilling template, which functioned as a positioning and casing drilling tool, but also the subsequent placement of the pin piles. &nbsp; Last but not least, the pin piles inserted into the shafts needed a fixed and force-locked connection with the ground. Great efforts were done to get to the necessary fresh and hardened properties of the cementitious grout itself, and to control the complete filling and necessary integrity of the structural sleeve grouting. All above three aspects, the dive-drill method, the underwater survey and the sleeve grouting will be explained in detail and challenges experienced offshore will be showcased. Eventually, a full set of individual expert features for drilling, monitoring and grouting techniques have been developed towards an optimized installation system of which parts have been already introduced into other fields of geotechnical works. Accepting challenges based on passion for progress for this outstanding project has brought innovative techniques and features into the deep foundations industry with great potential for adaptions in other fields of geotechnical works.

"In order to research temperature field for construction of connecting passage in Metro using artificial freezing method, the finite difference software FLAC3D is employed to numerically simulate construction process of connecting passage. During construction, the overall distribution of temperature field around connecting passage, the relationship between soil temperature and freezing time, the distribution and variation for the thickness of freezing wall are studied from the perspective of numerical analysis. The results show as follows: after 55 days’ freezing, the soil temperature surrounding connecting passage is about -24 oC ~ -28 oC, and the minimum thickness of freezing wall is about 4.0m, which is larger than the design value 3.1m. So construction conditions have satisfied to the excavation of connecting passage and pumping station. During the excavation of connecting passage, soil temperature has almost no obvious change and the thickness of freezing wall remains constant mainly. After 45 days’ normal thawing, the temperature of freezing wall rises 12 oC approximately. And the soil temperature rises faster at the beginning of the normal thawing stage. In the whole process of construction, the frozen area is about 5m outside the edge of connecting passage, and the cooling area is about 10m outside the edge of connecting passage. INTRODUCTIONThe first recorded application of the artificial freezing method is on a mineshaft project in 1862, and it has been widely used in foundation pit engineering, subway tunnels, mine shaft engineering and so on (Wang Zhiliang, 2010; Zhang Juanxia, 2012; Qiu Fan, 2007; Zhou Xiaomin, 1999). This method has many advantages of enhancing soil strength; decreasing permeability and adopting various unstable soils (silt clay, sand, gravel, etc.). It has been applied successfully in metro engineering construction in Beijing, Shanghai and Nanjing. According to incomplete statistics, the construction of connecting passage using artificial freezing method accounted for 98% in Shanghai metro (Qiu Fan, 2007)."

High level programming languages such ass C, FORTRAN and BASIC have been used in the mining industry to simulate truck-shovel systems. In addition, some special languages for simulation such as GASP, GPSS, SLAM, PROOF and SIMAN are commonly used. The most recent simulation system ARENA uses graphical modelling approach as well as animation notion. In this paper, the main elements of ARENA required to perform a truck- shovel simulation and to view the simulation results by means of the model animation are presented. The layout of the haulage system including shovels, trucks and dump sites was generated using draw tool in ARENA. All the components of the haulage system were represented by graphical modules. Animation tool was used to depict the performance of the haulage system as the simulation progressed.

Multi-use pad operators require an efficient and economic method to destroy cyanide in their process residues so new material can be stored on the pad and leached. Operators of the dedicated or single-use pads require an effective cyanide destruction method for pad closure. Cyanide destruction can be accomplished by utilizing oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide or calcium hypochlorite, or by utilizing ferrous sulfate which sequesters the cyanide in strong acid dissociable complex. Ferrous sulfate can be the preferred method of cyanide destruction because it is a less costly chemical, reaction rates are almost immediate and unlike oxidants, it can penetrate the total depth of a pile without being destroyed by side reactions. Literature indicates that the (Fe(CN)6)-4 com~lex is produced slowly but it appears that complexes such as Fe(CN)4(H20)2-or Fe(CN)4(OH)2)-4, are formed quickly and should have no U.V. sensitifity, unlike (Fe(CN)6)-4. Stoichiometry of the testwork indicates that Fe«CN)4(OH)2)-4 complex may be the species formed. The usage of ferrous sulfate has the advantage of being able to bring ~ level down that divalent metal ions such as Cu++, Cd++, Hg++, Pb++ and Zn will form insoluble complexes and precipitate from solutions does not destroy weak acid dissolvable complexes and can leave a heavy metal problem behind after cyanide destruction.

The East wall of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit (KCGM Superpit) has a history of wall instabilities impacting mining operations; the most significant of which occurred in May 2018, when more than 1 Mt of rock dislodged over six, 30 m high bench stacks and impacted the pit floor. Since 2011 approximately 1.250 Mt of material has fallen from the East wall at Fimiston Pit across three failure events (2011, 2018 and 2020). Each failure has been associated with major structures intersecting the pit walls: the Fiji Fault, the Australia East Secondary Splay Fault and the EWD3 Fault. In each instance the trigger for failure has been transient pore pressure in the pit walls. Northern Star will mine a cut back behind the failure area over a vertical distance of 180 m. Cut back mining will include the extraction of a remaining in situ wedge, which is assessed as kinematically able to fail, and a subvertical failure backscarp in Stage 1. A substantial amount of rill material from the 2018 and 2020 failures will be extracted in Stage 2. This paper presents the methodology in use to mine Stage 1 of the cut back, safely, through this potentially high-risk area, detailing the specific mining methodology employed, the controls put in place and the monitoring required. Day-to-day monitoring will be undertaken using the already installed slope stability radar and will feed into a daily assessment of activities which may be undertaken in the cut back area. Initial activities will focus on eliminating the potentially unstable wedge and vertical backscarp with use of innovative drill and blast techniques/products and the extensive use of remote capable equipment to limit personnel exposure.

Draw control at Premier Mine is considered important to avoid conditions of isolated draw, which results in early waste ingress, compaction of the kimberlite ore and loss of ore reserves. The Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is unique in that the pipe is cut at a depth of 400 metres below surface by a 75 metre thick gabbro sill. All cave mining at Premier is below the sill and failure to exercise good draw control could cause early ingress of gabbro waste. Gabbro causes problems in the diamond recovery plant and the amount of gabbro sent to the plant needs to be closely monitored. Fortunately coarse gabbro fragments are easy to recognise in drawpoints. It was anticipated that only 85 per cent of available ore would be drawn from the blocks immediately overlain by the gabbro sill before excessive gabbro waste forced the closure of drawpoints. Data on tons drawn per drawpoint and loaded per LHD as well as the tons tipped per pass is gathered by the vehicle monitoring and control (VMAC) system and information recorded by the load-haul-dump (LHD) drivers. Draw control staff monitor drawpoints on a shift basis and record the occurrence, type and height of hang-ups. Information pertaining to the status of the drawpoint in terms of support, waste and availability is also recorded. A database has been compiled that has been used to analyse the overall pattern of draw control, the frequency of occurrence of different types of hang-ups, secondary blasting efficiencies and drawpoint and LHD productivity. The gabbro sill has provided a unique marker horizon that has allowed the arrival of rock from a level 100 metres above the production level to be recognised. Data shows that ore migrates extensively towards groups of drawpoints that are heavily drawn with many drawpoints more than 100 per cent drawn before gabbro waste was recognised. This indicates that an accurate mixing algorithm is essential for good draw control. Data on tons drawn, drawpoint availability, productivity and the occurrence of various types of hang-ups has allowed better control of the mining operation and provided data for planning future caves. In the BA5 mining block a drawpoint spacing of 22 metres, horizontally across the major apex, has still allowed drawpoints to be pulled to waste with no loss of ore. In the BB1E mining block the drawpoint spacing has been increased to 23 metres and no problems have been experienced to-date. Future initiatives centre on improving the data gathering integrity of the vehicle monitoring and control system and a linear programme that will optimise draw control and productivity.

Em um ensaio de impacto Charpy convencional, não é comum mensurar a energia consumida nas etapas de fratura, geralmente se obtém apenas a porção de fratura dúctil. Esse trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar a proporção do consumo de energia das diferentes etapas de fratura e relacionar com a área de superfície de fratura do corpo de prova. Ainda, desenvolve discussão dos fenômenos envolvidos, utilizando a teoria já conhecida. Para a obtenção dos dados foi realizado ensaio de Charpy instrumentado em 50 corpos de prova de 9 lotes diferentes. As amostras foram retiradas a 1/3 do raio da seção redonda de barras laminadas a quente temperadas e revenidas. As amostras foram preparadas conforme amostra do tipo A, definido na ASTM E23. O ensaio foi conduzido a -20°C, obedecendo a norma ASTM E2298. Os resultados mostraram que aproximadamente 80% da energia consumida na fratura é consumida na etapa de fratura dúctil, sendo que 88% dessa energia é consumida na região de início de fratura. Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

LISTED among strategic and critical minerals for stockpiling, mica is an important raw material in electronic and electrical equipment industries. Each year large quantities are consumed in the manufacture of television and radio tubes, radar sets, generators, transformers, electric toasters, and irons. Crude mica, which comes from the mine in crystals or in rough books of various shapes and sizes, is known as run-of-mine or book mica. Structural imperfections, impurities, rough edges, and defective laminae are removed by cobbing, rifting, and trimming to produce a marketable block mica or film mica.&apos; After the rough books have been hand-cobbed to remove adhering rock, dirt, and crushed or defective mica they are rifted, or split. In the U.S. a straight-bladed knife is generally used for rifting. Products of this operation are classed broadly as untrimmed sheet mica and scrap. Sheet mica is any relatively flat piece sufficiently free from physical defects to be cut or stamped into specified shapes for industrial use. Sheet mica is classed as block, film, and splittings. Block mica is not less than 0.007 in. thick with a minimum usable area of 1 sq in. Film mica is split from the better qualities of block mica to groups of specified thickness ranging from 0.0012 to 0.004 in. Splittings are sheets with maximum thickness of 0.0012 in. and minimum usable area of 3/4 sq in. As virtually no mica splittings are produced in the U.S., they will not be discussed in this report. Small, low quality block is subdivided as punch and washer. Punch mica is thumb-trimmed material large enough to yield a circular disk of at least 11/2 in. diam for stained quality mica and 1 1/4 to 2 in. for clear quality. Poorer lots, often referred to as washer mica, are also included in the general term punch mica. Trimming, the next step in processing sheet mica, removes broken and ragged edges, loose scales, and other major imperfections. Trimming may be done with a knife, sickle, shears, or fingers. In the U.S. it is usually done with a 3-in. linoleum knife to obtain a bevel-edged cut. If ragged edges are broken off with the thumb and fingers, the mica is called thumb-trimmed. Minerals are certainly where they are found. The undemocratic distribution of the world&apos;s mineral wealth has created an incongruous inbalance: mineral-rich, scarcely populated countries supply highly-populated industrialised countries that in turn consume more minerals than they produce. This has been as much a generating force for colonisation, invasion, and war as religion, political ideals, or megalomania. The Industrial Revolution of the seventeenth century was born in Britain, a country with large domestic resources of coal, iron, lead, zinc, copper, tin, etc., as well as a large population. As consumption outstripped production imports filled the gap, particularly from its worldwide colonies. For example, when Canada was founded in 1867 more than 905 of its investments were British financed, and much of these were mineral-based. The British made similar investments in South East Asia, Australasia, the Caribbean, and elsewhere, as did the other industrialised Western European countries hungry for raw materials. Later the United States emerged as a leading industrial power, again due largely to its abundant natural resources. Consumption soon exceeded production and foreign sources were saught. American business went exploring abroad ant many a mineral resource was developed almost totally on the basis of the US market many .thousands of miles away. Closer to home, Canada was also an obvious target for the US with its rich mineral resource base, small population, and geographical juxtaposition, so much so that about the time of the 1914-18 War the US took over from Britain as the major investor in Canada, and this peaked in 1967 when the US accounted for 80% of the country&apos;s foreign investment. After the 1939-45 War Japan joined the ranks of the USA and Western Europe as industrialised powers, and they too searched the world for the deposits lacking in their homeland.
