THE first method of working coal mines in the middle western states, more particularly in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri, was by means of the so-called single-entry method. In this method a single main passageway, or entry, was driven in the coal seam. with no parallel passageways, and from this pas-sageway or entry there were turned at intervals sim-ilar cross-passageways or entries, and from these cross-passageways, if the coal seam worked lay fairly horizontal, rooms were turned right and left. These crude methods of working were followed when the com-panies opening the mines were small and of very limited capital, and when the demand for coal was small and irregular. The principal desire was to produce coal in the short-est possible time and at the cheapest price. The chief evil resulting from such method of working was de-fective ventilation, although there were other serious drawbacks. There were then few or no good mining laws and no restrictions on those operating the coal mines. The hours of labor were long, the wages low, and the miners accordingly worked hard. All the coal was either sheared or undercut with a pick by hand. Very little solid shooting and no machine mining was done. What little air entered the mine, openings was introduced through the entries or. headings and thence conducted through the rooms by means of curtains; in many cases, as the workings became more exten-sive, the number of curtains added so materially to the mine resistance that ventilation was extremely in-efficient. Shots were fired by the miners at any time during the working shift and consequently there was more or less powder smoke or fumes in the mine work-ings all day long. Moreover, the working days were much longer than at present. The fine, dry coal-dust falling from the miners' picks while they were shear-ing or undercutting the coal filled the mine atmosphere and was taken into the lungs of the mine employees.

Agrico Chemical Company, as we presently know it, is the result of the coming together of several different fertilizer operations. The Williams Companies, our parent organization, first entered the fertilizer business in 1971, when it acquired the fertilizer operations of the Gulf Oil Company. This gave us, among other things, the manufacturing facility at Donaldsonville, Louisiana. In 1972, The Williams Companies acquired Agrico Chemical Company from Continental Oil Company, bringing in a manufacturing facility and phosphate mines at Pierce Florida. Our Florida Mines are in the region commonly known as the Bone Valley Region of Florida. The majority of the phosphate fertilizer produced in the United States utilizes rock mined in this region. The Donaldsonville Plant was originally built in 1967-68 on the site of the old Faustina Plantation at an approximate cost of $80,000,000. (This plant is commonly referred to as our Faustina Plant.) Until such time as Agrico was acquired from Continental Oil, the Donaldsonville Facility was solely used to upgrade phosphoric acid into finished granular products.

So Bert, a native of New Haven, earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Yale. Immediately after Yale days lie served as metallurgist of the Scovill Manufacturing Co., Waterbury, and then went to the Central Research Laboratories of the American Smelting and Refining Co. at Maurer, N. J., where since 1931 he has been superintendent of research. Bert has contributed to metallurgical literature many reports of studies on the constitution and the physical, metallurgy of copper and copper alloys as well as papers on general nonferrous physical metallurgy.

This paper offers a comprehensive solution to the problem of dust emissions at belt conveyor transfer points. It discusses details of enclosure design and presents a straightforward procedure for calculating required dust control exhaust volumes. Many design variables are taken into account which heretofore have been commonly ignored or inadequately considered. These include belt widths, belt speeds, enclosure openings, material flow rates, material bulk densities, material lump sizes, height of material fall, material temperature, and ambient air temperature. All of these quantities are handled by means of a "fill-in-the-blanks" type of calculation form which permits quick, reliable solutions by relative "non- experts".

The sedimentery basins of this region developed in the collision zone of the Pacific Ocean plate and the continent. Stresses were transmitted thorough wedge-like lithospheric blocks, such as the Okotsk Sea, East Kamchatka, Aleutian and 2 other smaller blocks. The Umgal a section of the We1gedacht Exploration Company Ltd., a member of the Rand Mines Group, is situated near Utrecht in the province of Natal, South Africa. Two coal seams, the Alfred and Gus, are mined to fulfill commitments to both inland and export markets. To increase extraction in the high quality Alfred Seam, pillar extraction, known locally as stooping, was introduced to the mine in September, 1980. Mining is a conventional cut-drill -blast operation and takes place under a unique set of geological conditions viz. moderately thick seam at 3.5 m; rapidly varying cover from 25m to 120 m; an overburden containing competent sandstone and dolerite horizons. In order to improve the understanding of the manner in which the pillar and overburden interact during pillar extraction, a largely visual system of monitoring backed up by roof-floor convergence measurements was employed. Preliminary analysis of the observations suggests that roof collapse or goafing occurs in three phases but is only initiated once a critical amount of convergence has taken place.

The Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa is the first mine in the Western World to introduce resin-in­pulp technology for the recovery of gold from a cyanide-leached slurry. Located in the Eastern Transvaal region of the country, the plant processes approximately 375 metric tons• of ore per day, of which over 90 per cent is mined in an open pit adjacent to the metaflurgical plant, while the remaining 5 to 10 per cent is trucl<ed in from two small high-grade deposits, located about 10 kilometers from the plant. The gold grade in the open pit is about 1 git, while the values m the two high-grade deposits range between 5 and 15 git. At the current treatment rate, the proven reserves m the three locations will last about another 10 years. Early testwork indicated that the ore was not well suited to conventional filtration processing or to heap leaching because of its high cfay content, and that carbon-m-pulp (CIP) would probably prove to be the most viable metallurgical route. Tcstwork to establish the feasibility of CIP for this application was carried out at Mintek in 1985. This worl<, which was based on batch-leaching and carbon-loading tests, indicated that CIP was technically feasible, but that both the rate of gold loading and the gold-loading capacity of the carbon were inferior to those obtained with Witwatersrand ores. The poor adsorption characteristics of the carbon were attributed to the abnormally high concentration of natural organic compounds (humates and fulvates) in the ore. Batch tests were therefore also carried out with strong-base resins, since resins are known (1] to be far less susceptible to organic fouling than is activated carbon. The results were very promising, and pointed to fast kinetics and a high loading capacity. (Fig. 1 ). Notwithstanding these findings, it was decided to recover gold with activated carbon at Golden Jubilee Mine because the CIP process was, by then, well established in South Africa and elsewhere in the world, whereas resin-in-pulp (RIP) was unproven technology. The r>lant was commissioned in September 1986 and, for 18 months, operated in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) configuration, i.e. with a total of . six leach tanks, the last four of which contained activated carbon. As could have been predicted from the laboratory results, the performance of the CIL plant was generally poor, low gold loadings on the carbon (less than 1500 git) and high losses of soluble gold (0.2 to 0.3 p.p.m.) bemg characteristic of the operation. Activated carbons used for precious metal recovery from carbon-in­pulp (CIP), carbon-In-leach (CIL) and carbon-in-column (CIC) circuits often become fouled with Inorganic precipitates (i.e., CaCOa, CaS04, SI02), and adsorbed organics (I.e., petroleum distillates from lubricants, dissolution products from wood) (1,2). These contaminants occlude carbon pore structure, such that diffusion controlled adsorption and desorption (elution) of Au(CN)2-and Ag(CN)2· are lmpeded(3,4l. Thus, after only short exposure to the hydrometallurgical environment, the characteristic carbon activity is reduced(5l. By frequently regenerating circuit carbons, activity losses associated with fouling can usually be minimized. Regeneration typically Involves (not necessarily Is this order): 1) elution to remove adsorbed ionic species (e.g., until they are removed from the carbon pore structure, Au(CN)2" and Ag(CN)2-are contaminants )(6l; 2) acid washing with 3-15% (wt/wt) hydro­chloric acid, to dissolve soluble Inorganic precipitates such as CaC03; 3) neutralization and/or water rinsing to remove residual acid; 4) thermal regeneration at 350-650 °C to remove adsorbed and/or pyrolyzed organ­ics; and 5) screening to remove fine carbon particles produced by Impaction and abrasion in the various stages of the hydrometallurgical circuit (i.e., adsorption, elution, and regeneration). The overall process Is purposed to reopen the circuit carbon pore structure, and to maintain the activity and qualities of virgin (new) carbon(7,8l. While most CIP, CIL and CIC operators regenerate circuit carbons, few evaluate the effect of the process on carbon quality in a systematic way. Process control usually Involves Iterating critical regeneration parameters such as: acid concentration; time frames for acid washing and water rinsing; and temperature and residence time for thermal regeneration. Carbon quality control frequently comprises only sporadic activity tests performed on non-representative grab samples dipped from conve­niently accessed carbon storage bins. So, regenerated carbon quality may vary and (at times) be unacceptable for effective hydrometallurglcal circuit operation. To verify the efficacy of the regeneration process and assure accept­able adsorption and elution rates for Au(CN)2· and Ag(CN)2·, operators should systematically assess regenerated circuit carbon quality. This paper, then, suggests methods for effectively assessing circuit carbon quality, Including: carbon sampling procedures; standardized physical and chemical test methods; and criteria and general procedures for comparative adsorption rate (activity) testing. Also, a two tier quality control testing scheme is proposed, and techniques for presenting and interpreting test data are demonstrated.

Mineral flotation processes generate large volumes of tailings, which must be disposed of efficiently and safely. In addition to dry stack disposal, the possibility of reusing these tailings as aggregates in shotcrete is an interesting alternative. Tailings samples from a mining operation in southern Peru were characterized by granulometric analysis, X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Concrete samples were obtained with different tailings formulations. The samples were subsequently subjected to geomechanical testing. The results showed that replacing 20% to 30% of the tailings with aggregates in shotcrete production achieved compressive strengths exceeding 30 MPa after 28 days of curing, with an energy absorption capacity of 500 joules. Results show that this shotcrete can be used in the support stage of the mining cycle in underground mining.

In the conventional underground combustion process (dry combustion) much heat is left behind in the swept formation and goes to rva.rte. Econonmy can be improved by heat recuperation through water injection. This is most advantageous if done at the earliest opportunity before much heat is dissiputed to cap and base rock. Water injected simultaneously with the air will flash to superheated steam, which passes through the combustion front together with the nitrogen from the air. A condensation front traveling up to three times as fast as the combustion front drives out the oil. In this type of wet combustion, the water evaporates before it reaches the combustion zone. The evaporation front travels more slowly than the combustion zone. If so much water is injected that the evaporation front overrun the combustion front, combustion in that spot will be quenched and some unburned fuel will be left behind. Air reacts with the oil farther down-stream where steam temperatures occur; at steam temperature, the air reacts rapidly with the oil. Velocity of the combustion front is increased thereby and is governed essentially by the water-injection rate. In the extreme case of high water-injection rate, a short heat wave of constant length is driven through the formation by water injection. Once this wave has been established, no more heat need be generated than that required to make up the heat losses from the short heat wave; a relatively low rate of air injection will suffice. The feasibility of partially quenched combustion has been confirmed in tube experiments. A heat wave at steam temperature is observed. Chemical analyses of flue gas indicate preferential burning of hydrogen while a carbonaceous residue is left in the formation. Introduction A disadvantage of so-called dry in situ combustion is that air-compression costs are rather high. An air consumption of about 400 std cu m/cu m (400 scf/cu ft) of formation swept is an accepted figure. This high consumption is mostly wasted since much heat is left behind in the depleted oil sand. Methods were investigated for recuperating as much as possible of the heat left behind. This paper deals only with basic principles and is confined mainly to one-dimen- sional flow without lateral heat losses; experiments were conducted in relatively narrow, well insulated tubes. If some water is injected with the air, it will turn to superheated steam in an evaporation front, which should travel behind the combustion front. The steam having passed the combustion front causes a steam drive by a condensation front that can travel faster than the combustion front. The latter needs to travel only part of the distance covered by the oil-displacing condensation front, and thus consumes less air. The water-air ratio would seem limited to that at which cold water overruns the combustion. This limitation was deliberately exceeded considerably in theory and experiments. It was found that combustion is then indeed quenched, but only locally. Farther downstream, the oxygen finds residual oil at steam temperature, which is suficiently high to ensure rapid oxidation. Thus, the combustion front uses only part of the available fuel because it is chased through the formation faster than its normal velocity. No heat is left behind. This new process is called "partially quenched combustion". At the upper limit of the water-air ratio, a small heat slug is moved through the formation by the flow of water and steam. Only a small flow of air is needed since it has only to generate sufficient heat to make up for the lateral heat losses of the short heat slug. Theory Although many factors complicate underground combustion, the processes will be presented in their simplest form. For this reason, one-dimensional flow without lateral heat losses is assumed. Heat conduction in the direction of flow also is disregarded. Under these conditions, dry combustion causes very high temperatures. The heat-carrying capacity of the gas stream is small. Heat generated by oxidation of a residual oil saturation is retained in the sand. The available fuel determines the air requirement and the temperature obtained. Accepting the often-mentioned air consumption of 400 std cu m/cu m (400 scf/cu ft) formation, we calculate a temperature of the swept sand of 1,200C (2,192F) (Fig, I). If water is injected at a modest rate with the air, it will flash to superheated steam upon contact with the heated sand. One cu m (35.31 cu ft) of hot formation will evaporate about 0.5 cu m (17.66 cu ft) of water, and thereafter will accommodate (at an estimated 0.80 saturation and an assumed 0.40 porosity) another 0.3 cu m (10.59 cu ft) of water in cold condition. The total footage drilled was 23,83134 ft., of which 12,802 1/2 ft. was by cable tools and 11,029 by rotary. Four of the dry holes were drilled into Mississippian or older beds.

As a leader in the development of metal extraction technology, Avecia continues to pioneer advancements for the processing of copper through leach, solvent extraction, and electrowinning of copper. From the initial patent of the second generation of oxime 5- nonylsalicylaldoxime in the 1970&apos;s; to the effective use of modifier technology; and development of computer assisted modeling programs, Avecia is driving SX technology to maximize extraction productivity. Keys to consider when advancing productivity are: 1) high quality, high performance products; 2) a responsive, partnering approach to technical service; and 3) tools to aid in the education of industry wide technical personnel with a view on continuous improvement. The focus of this paper is on the advancement of tools to aid in the education for optimization of processing copper through solvent extraction. One such tool is Avecia&apos;s own customized solvent extraction modeling program called MEUM. MEUM is currently used world wide to analyze plant operations, test ideas for improving operations, assist engineering companies in design, and to teach basic solvent extraction concepts. Recently MEUM has also been incorporated into a University setting. In the spring of 2000 Avecia worked with the University of Melbourne to integrate MEUM into their Mass Transport tutorial class. Students completed exercises to evaluate how operational changes affected a solvent extraction plant&apos;s performance. This paper introduces the basic functions of the program and discusses the successful implementation of MEUM into the University of Melbourne curriculum.

The run-of-mine coals in the U.S. being fed to coal cleaning plants have become increasingly finer due to the adoption of modern, mechanized mining methods, and economics are dictating that finer fractions, as well as the coarser fractions, be cleaned. Traditional dewatering methods (vacuum disc filters and centrifuges) are proving inadequate for preparing fine refuse for disposal or fine coal product for downstream handling. The Electric Power Research Institute has been supporting research into the nature and limitations of mechanical dewatering, and novel ways of improving it. The efficiency of various silicone-based chemicals at aiding dewatering was investigated, and it was shown that the final moisture content of hydrophilic coals after vacuum Filtration could be reduced by 1 to 5% with up to 40% increase in filtration rate by addition of one of several of these silicones. EPRI also has an on-going program at its Coal Cleaning Test Facility to investigate the performance of the Larox pressure filter in comparison with that of the disc filter and solid bowl centrifuge. While improvements to the dewatering performance currently being obtained in existing operating plants by such means are achieveable, a fundamental study has shown that, regardless of changes in operating conditions, there may be a limit to the lowest cake moisture content attainable by mechanical dewatering of a given sample of coal fines. Determination of this limit for a specific coal would be useful in designing facilities to dry and handle it.

"A novel oxygen production technology noted chemical looping air separation (CLAS) was introduced and properties of Cu-based oxygen carriers used were investigated. The oxygen carriers were prepared by mechanical mixing. Al2O3, Fe2O3, ZrO2, TiO2 and SiO2 were used as binders during the preparation. XRD patterns show that spine! oxides are formed using Al2O3 and Fe2O3 as binders. Phases of CuO and binders keep stable using ZrO2, TiO2 and SiO2 as binders. BET values of oxygen carriers increase in the order of ZrO2>TiO2>SiO2>Fe2O3>Al2O3. The effects of temperatures, binders, particle sizes and flow rates on reduction/oxidation reaction rates were studied in TG experiments. The reduction reaction rate increases in the order of ZrO2>TiO2>SiO2. The effect of binders on the reactivity of oxidation is not obvious. The reduction and oxidation reaction rates both have the tendencies of increasing with the temperature increasing and with gas flow decreasing. However, the effects of gas flow and particle size are little.IntroductionChemical looping air separation (CLAS) is a novel oxygen production technology. The oxygen carriers used in CLAS release oxygen in reduction reactor and regenerate in the oxidation reactor. Selecting suitable oxygen carriers is the key for CLAS. Oxides of CuO, Mn2O3, Co3O4, Pb3O4, CrO2, SrO2, PdO2 and CeO2 have the property of releasing oxygen at suitable temperature and oxygen partial pressure [1]. Among these oxides, CuO, Mn2O3, Co3O4 are the most common compositions used to prepared oxygen carriers for chemical looping combustion (CLC) or chemical looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) [2-5]. Moreover, thermodynamic calculations and preliminary experiments were carried out on oxides of Cu (CuO/Cu2O), Mn (Mn2O3/Mn3O4) and Co (Co3OJCoO) by Moghtaderi to ascertain their feasibility for CLAS process [6]. CuO has the highest oxygen transport capacity (0.1 g 02/g CuO compared to 0.03 g 02/g Mn2O3 and 0.06 g 02/g Co3O4). However, agglomeration is the biggest issue for copper oxides used at high temperature because of its low melting point (l 450°C for CuO, 1235°C for Cu2O and 1075°C for the mixture of CuO and Cu2O) [7]. In order to improve the capability of anti-sintering and stability ofCuO, binders (ZrO2, MgAl2O4, TiO2, SiO2, Fe2O3, Al2O3, cement) are added during the preparation of Cu-based oxygen carriers [8]. In this paper, the Cu-based oxygen carriers were prepared by mechanical mixing method. TiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, ZrO2 and SiO2 were selected as binder. XRD, BET and SEM were used to analyze the phase, surface area and surface morphology of oxygen carrier prepared. The reactivity of oxygen reduction and oxidation of oxygen carriers prepared were investigated in STA409PC thermal analyzer."

THE mine and milling plant of Demonstration Gold Mines, Ltd., is near the city limits of Baguio, Mt. Province, P. I. The mine road connects with the main highway to Manila. The nearest railway point is near sea level, approximately 40 miles distant. The Baguio district is very mountainous and has one of the heaviest rainfalls in the world. It is therefore difficult to maintain roads or to impound tailings and mine dumps. All supplies are trucked into the district direct from Manila or the nearest railway point, which means uncertain deliveries and high freight rates. Installation of equipment is difficult and costly. The average elevation at the mine is 4000 ft. and the climatic conditions are ideal except for a three months rainy season. The company generates its own power for mining and milling operations with three 400-hp. Ruston Diesel engines direct connected to 250-kw. General Electric alternating current generators. Labor conditions have been excellent, although at present social security laws are causing some unrest. Labor receives a higher average wage rate in this district than other labor in the Islands. The company also furnishes free living quarters, hospitalization and work- men&apos;s compensation. Taxation has been reasonable up to the present time, but some of the new mining legislation may make it difficult to operate and pay dividends. The future depends largely upon the continuation of $35 gold and the political outcome in the Islands. HISTORY The Demonstration ore body was worked by the Igorots for many years, as evidenced by old stopes and fill encountered in present operations. Attention of Americans was first attracted soon after the Spanish- American war. During the building of the Benguet road to Baguio, the engineers and foreman became interested in the geology of the district.

Leaching of uranium in situ from sandstone deposits with ammonium carbonate solution containing dissolved oxygen occurs rapidly compared with the leaching of the bulk of the sulfur present as FeS2. However, because of their high reducing capacity and their relative abundance, the FeS2 minerals consume the bulk of the oxidant. A pressure leach apparatus was constructed that permitted measuring oxygen consumption by FeS2, best described by a first-order reaction. The experimental rate constants for various cores are roughly proportional to their FeS2 contents.

The Mount Wright gold deposit is located near the town of Ravenswood, ~90 km south of Townsville, in north Queensland. The deposit has been mined by underground methods since 2006. It produced approximately 138 koz Au in the 2011 - 2012 financial year and has a total endowment of approximately 1 Moz Au. To facilitate near mine exploration, a re-logging campaign of 600+ diamond and RC drill holes was recently conducted, resulting in a revised three-dimensional (3D) geological model and improved understanding of the ore controls and the mineralised system. The deposit is within a Permo-Carboniferous breccia complex approximately 350 m diameter and more than 1200 m deep. It consists of early peripheral granite-rich breccia, polymict breccia, a rhyolite spine and a late tuffisite (fine-grained milled breccia) pipe. The rhyolite spine is approximately 60 m + 250 m + at least 1200 m deep and is zoned with massive, flow-banded and breccia phases that are in part gradational with the other breccias. There is extensive sericitic alteration centred on the tuffisite and rhyolite units and fading out into the shallower and peripheral polymict and granite-rich breccias. There is also a broad pattern of metal zoning with elevated Pb-Zn ¦ Ag in the upper 400 m, Au-Cu-Bi below 400 m fading out below ~850 m, and a poorly defined deep Mo-W-Te-Sb anomaly. The majority of the Au ore is between 400 and 850 m below the surface in the rhyolite spine. Below this, Au mineralisation is less coherent, and more localised in the margins of the rhyolite and in the adjacent tuffisite. The developing model is that the ore is not confined to or necessarily directly genetically related to the rhyolite spine, but is driven by other phases of intrusion that also generated the tuffisite pipe.
