Yielding rock bolt support systems have been developed to accommodate ground movement in shifting ground such as in coal operations; in creeping ground such as salt, trona, and potash; and in swelling ground associated with some clays. These systems, designed to remain intact despite ground movement, should enhance mine safety and help contain costs in areas where rebolting of rigid non-yielding systems is typically required. Four such systems were tested in straight tensile pulls in the laboratory. They include the Slip Nut System from Dywidag Systems International USA, Inc., Ischebeck's bolt mounted Titan Load Indicator, Rocky Mountain Bolt Company's Yielding Cable Bolt, and a rock bolt installed variation of the yielding steel post developed by RE/SPEC Inc. The first two systems are currently marketed products and the latter two are prototype systems. Each system responds to load and displacement by yielding in a unique manner. All are designed to yield at predetermined loads. A description of each system and its yield function is provided. Each system was tested over its prescribed yield range in a test machine. At least five tests were performed on each system. Each system yielded and continued to provide support according to its design. Each shows promise for ground control use in shifting or creeping rock. This work helps to illustrate the comparative differences in performance between these specialized systems and the applications where they may be most useful.

In 1990, Freeport Exploration began regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the republic of Indonesia (Fig. 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work that totaled 2.6 million hm2 (6.4 million acres). The company was subsequently awarded additional concessions that added 1 million hm2 (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments, Freeport’s current land position totals 1.9 million hm2 (4.7 million acres). Freeport began the exploration program to locate additional Grasberg deposits, the largest deposit in the Ertsberg district. But the company recognized that other types of deposits could be present in the largely unexplored area of Irian Jaya.

Senior staff representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) met in Washington on September 6, 1972, to review and evaluate their cooperative accomplishments to date and to consider the planning and conduct of future coordinated activities. The six presentations given at this joint staff seminar are published here for the benefit of those concerned with the problems of coal mine health, and especially those with responsibilities in administering the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.

In the Summer of 2011, emergency repairs to the Jefferson Memorial North Plaza and Seawall were completed. These repairs were necessitated by settlement and lateral movement of the seawall and North Plaza which prompted the National Park Service (NPS) to initiate an investigation as to the possible causes of the movement, and commission a design for its mitigation. Information gathered from extensive instrumentation on site led to the design of a movement mitigation scheme that included demolition of the Ashlar Seawall and reconstruction of a new seawall. The new seawall foundation is an A-Wall consisting of vertical caissons and battered pipe piles connected to the seawall itself. The scheme provides resistance to future vertical and lateral movement of the North Plaza and the new seawall. Repair to the seawall and plaza began in December 2009, and was completed in August 2011. This paper discusses the mechanisms believed to be responsible for settlement and lateral movement, summarizes the procedure followed for design of the mitigation, and describes the construction methods and some challenges faced during the repair.

"Packaged fuel" is the trade name applied by the industry to a product consisting of coal screenings and a binder compressed into 3 -or 4-inch cubes and wrapped (six or eight in a package) in sturdy paper and sealed with gummed tape. Parry describes the product in greater detail and distinguishes clearly between packaged fuel and briquettes. The industry developed from the desire of retail coal dealers to improve utilization of the relatively large quantities of slack sizes that result from the degradation, during shipping and handling in the yard, of friable coal, particularly Pocahontas coal. During the war an attempt was made to apply this technique to anthracite fines, and a recent publication of the U. S. Bureau of Mines reported the results of physical and combustion tests on packaged fuels containing anthracite fines. References made in this report to the previous investigation on packaged fuels containing anthracite represent data or conclusions presented in Report of Investigations 3882. This investigation was conducted as a continuation of the previously reported studies and consisted of physical and combustion tests of packaged fuels made from high-volatile bituminous coal, as well as the low-volatile bituminous coal ordinarily used in the industry, to determine their relative suitability for domestic firing. Particular attention was given to the smoke-producing properties of the packaged fuels because of the increasing importance of the prevention or reduction of smoke from hand-fired domestic heating plants resulting from the widespread enactment of smoke-prevention ordinances.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct its the 2014 National Mining Hall of Fame Class on Sept. 13, 2014 during its 27th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony at the Westin Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s four inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. Harry M. Conger III, Günther Franz (Frank) Joklik, Ellen Swallow Richards and Dr. Alfred Weiss will join 223 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Conger was a great role model and strong advocate within Homestake Mining Co. and among his industry peers on behalf of environmentally responsible, safe, profitable and high-performance operations. As chairman and chief executive officer, Conger was instrumental in revitalizing and rebuilding Homestake into an industry leader in technological advances and environmental protection. Through his contributions in exploration, project development and operations management as Kennecott president and chief executive, Joklik did much to strengthen Kennecott as a company and assisted in restoring the competitiveness of the U.S. mining industry. Richards is generally recognized as the founder of ecology. She was the very definition of a pioneer in such diverse fields as chemistry, geology and mineralogy, mining and metallurgy, environmental science, public health, home economics and education. Weiss was a true visionary in using quantitative methods and digital computers to aid mineral exploration, plan and design mines, operate mineral production facilities and integrate the disparate information resources throughout a mining company into a modern management information system. NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman, Paul C. Jones, said, ?Again this year we are honored to be able to induct an outstanding group of deserving individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the mining industry in the United States. Included are two living inductees who have made significant contributions to management in the industry. One inductee was the first female graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, its first female faculty member and the first female member of AIME who had an outstanding career as a mineral investigator in the United States. Another inductee was a lifetime innovator in bringing digital technology into common use in our industry. Each of our 2014 inductees made significant and lasting contributions to our industry and are well deserving of becoming a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame.? The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited. The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal.   The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (i.e. underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.

[The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coals, functioning under the sponsorship of the American Society for Testing Materials and the rules of the American Standards Association, in its 1934 report recommended to the American Society for Testing-Materials that Specifications for Classification of Coals by Rank be adopted as tentative. These specifications, slightly modified as recommended by the Sectional Committee, in its 1935 report,6 wore approved as tentative standards by the society in 1935. The specifications rover the classification of coals according; to their degree of metamorphism, or progressive alteration, in the natural eerie s from lignite to anthracite. The basic scheme of classification is according to fired carbon and calorific value (expressed in B.t.u.) calculated to the mineral-matter-free basis. The higher-rank coals are classified according to fixed carbon on the dry basis, and the lower-rank coals according to B.t.u. on the moist basis, that is, containing its natural bed moisture but free of visible surface moisture. Agglutinating and weathering indices arc used to differentiate between certain adjacent groups.]

Failure of the mine floor supporting coal pillars frequently occurs when the subcoal strata include "underclays" or other low strength strata. The failure process has been studied to define the response of these materials to applied coal pillar loads and to determine the applicability of bearing capacity analysis to evaluate unsafe conditions. The study has been accomplished through an investigation of both the intact and insitu geotechnical properties of the subcoal strata and through the installation of floor movement monitoring instrumentation. The results of these studies have indicated that both the shear strength of the underclay and the stratigraphy of the subcoal strata must be considered in the analysis. The shear strength was the major controlling factor determining the ultimate load carrying ability of the materials, but the thickness and stratigraphic position of the weak layers influenced the mechanism of the failure process. The methods of bearing capacity analysis were used to define pillar stability that included provisions for taking into consideration a two-layer system. Conditions assumed for a coal mine where a weak underclay overlies firmer strata. The results of the analysis compared very well with observed mine conditions, indicating marginal conditions in areas of the mine which later experienced pillar support failure. In addition, a "heave factor" was derived to predict potentially unstable floor conditions in the mines studied in detail.

Asking the question, “What do the world’s leading corporations and cutting-edge practitioners of sustainability put forth to guide a given mine site for planning and action toward ‘sustainability’?”, this paper explores the spectrum of methodologies and mindsets in available literature, then constructs an example for the large near-closure facility at Kennecott Utah Copper. Values, opportunities and constraints spring from physical, unutilized byproducts, from critical ecosystems and wildlife populations, from location relative to those ecosystems and proximate communities, and from the political will to perform adequate feasibility investigations. Patience, determination and thoroughness are imperative. Identifying most productive and, simultaneously, most protective and restorative, practical methods to approach ‘sustainability’ has become a central mission of industry and business, worldwide. A survey of recent international initiatives finds no single approach that establishes either a readily adaptable methodology or an appropriate set of ‘attention’ points, or agenda, to guide individual mining operations at specific locations toward the elusive but essential goal of ‘sustainable’ mining. Untying this convoluted knot of contending factors requires willingness to recognize and work within ecological constraints for community long-term needs. Occasionally, the task requires the sword of Alexander the Great. Through integration that is unflinchingly honest ethically, culturally, economically, ecologically and scientifically, fully cognizant of place and community at whatever scales are of greatest significance, and integrative of both problem-response and opportunity, we may envision a mineral extraction and beneficiation future that achieves the best, most nearly sustainable, results possible. Industrial ecology (IE), with its clear emphasis on community, ecosystems, and sustainable economic stimulation, presents a sufficiently broad and adaptable discipline to facilitate planning and management toward sustainable mining. The creation of sustainable jobs encapsulates IE’s analogy to the niche survival strategies of organisms in nature. Open to common-sense recognition of faults and opportunities at appropriate scales, IE is less a discipline or prescribed methodology than a mindset, willing to be rigorously scientific when science is imperative, but also willing to exercise “art” when creativity or community engagement are needed. IE is also capable of future-looking compassion for peoples and nature. Looking beyond what has occurred to date, the case of Kennecott Utah Copper provides ample illustration of possibilities for community economic development, environmental management, and significant initiatives beneficial at regional and planetary scales, to become recognizable as deserving of the label, ‘sustainable.’ Through what this researcher terms “whole mine, whole region, whole planet” thinking, strategies become visible and subject to serious consideration, presenting a path to best possible accomplishment in mining. Constituting a maximal broadening of mining’s “traditional” scope, the integrative approach proposed here is the ‘paradigm shift’ being made by many other industries around the world. In aggregate, these steps are the only hope for avoidance of environmental, social and economic risks that threaten to curtail resource development and impair mining companies’ ‘social license to operate.’

"Pitting corrosion inhibition of 304 stainless steel (SS) in groundwater with a ternary inhibitor mixture (phosphonic acid + bivalent cation + various surfactants) was studied with different environmental variables such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and chloride ions. Critical pitting potential and corrosion potential were calculated for these test media using electrochemical techniques. Under the tested condition, the localized corrosion resistance of 304 SS was determined and the results are discussed. IntroductionPitting corrosion of metals and alloys is a major cause of failure in chemical processing desalination plants, scrubber for flue gas desulphurization (FGD) plants, water storage tanks and pipelines, petroleum refineries, etc.Heat exchangers and condensers in inland thermal and nuclear powerplants utilize groundwater as a coolant, but materials of construction are generally prone to localized corrosion.Localized corrosion attack can be initiated when the passive film on the metal is disrupted. The presence of certain aggressive anions such as chlorides (Cl-) can migrate to the actively corroding area and stabilize pitting corrosion. Attention has been focussed on improving the resistance of stainless steel against localizedcorrosion in aqueous environments.One of the most accepted methods of avoiding corrosion is by the addition of chemicals (inhibitors). Over the past two decades, some phosphonic acids have been explored due to their good corrosion inhibition efficiency and low toxicity (Fang et al., 1993; Karman et al., 1998; Rajendran et al., 1998; Gopi and Rajeswari, 2000a). Bivalent cations like Zn2+ are often applied as additives to inhibit the metal dissolution (Sekine and Hirakawa, 1986; Aruna Bahadur, 1998)."

"The geology of the Ore Fault Ni-Cu deposit has been reinterpreted in the light of recent studies of the geology of the Neoarchean Bird River Sill Complex and the occurrence of economic Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralization. The Ni-Cu sulfides are hosted by the lower of two parallel NNW-trending and moderately W-dipping mafic-ultramafic intrusions related to the Bird River Sill Complex. The bod¬ies intruded a bimodal volcanic suite consisting of weakly deformed mafic flows and felsic pyroclastic rocks. The mafic volcanic rocks are geochemically related to the MORB-type rocks of the Lamprey Falls Formation, and the felsic volcanic rocks are related to arc-type rocks of the Peterson Creek Formation. The original pyroxene- and olivine-dominated mineralogy of the sills has been replaced by variable ser¬pentine-amphibole-talc-carbonate assemblages.The Ni-Cu sulfide assemblage exhibits textures and geochemical signatures typical of orthomagmatic sulfide mineralization. The sulfide minerals are associated with cumulate layers of magnetic ferrochromite that range in thickness from a few to tens of centimeters. A later event of Zn-Cu-Ag sulfide mineralization associated with quartz veining and garnet-chlorite alteration along a fault that strikes north, dips vertically, and cuts all rock types. The mineralized fault is cut by the NE-trending Peterson Creek shear zone. Where the Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralized zones intersect, remnant magmatic features such as amphibolite or cumulate ferrochromite bands occur within quartz veins or local chlorite alteration. The mixed zones contain a very unusual polymetallic assemblage of Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, and platinum group elements (PGE)."

INDUSTRY has yet to find a universal solution to the problem of engineer personnel selection. Today, the choice of the right man for the right job is even more pressing than ever before. The age of the hard apprenticeship seems to have passed. In its place one finds the interviewer who must determine through personal contact and evaluation of college grades whether a graduate engineer will fit into his company's scheme. The problem, as it is constituted today, may be broken into four parts: Need for better use of human resources (there is a shortage of engineers, scientists, and skilled workers), productivity with higher efficiency, encouragement of personal pride in work performed, and employee's happiness on the job and away from it.

Virtually zero gas emission smelting is promoted as a means for securing environmental advantages and the general public’s acceptance. Concerns about climate change will increasingly make it more difficult for new primary metals projects to come to fruition unless greenhouse gas emissions are decreased. Assuming a sustainable market for sulphuric acid is not locally available, the next best option is high temperature reaction of strong SO2 with limestone or dolomite. This is followed by CO2 liquefaction and disposal either underground or in the deep ocean. The Voisey’s Bay nickel project is cited as an example where appropriate location of a new smelter close to large dolomite or limestone deposits would lead to a virtually zero gas emission operation. Most of the electrical energy required for producing technically pure oxygen and for liquefying CO2 and transporting it to disposal can be derived from smelting a bulk sulphide concentrate and then reacting SO2 at high temperature. Provided the smelter gases are properly cleaned before sulphur fixation, the sulphated stone should be uncontaminated and environmentally benign and possibly of use in the building and construction industry.

Quarry accidents in 1963 caused 61 fatal and 3,468 nonfatal injuries which occurred at respective frequency rates of 0.31 and 17.91 per million man-hours of worktime. The fatality record in 1963 was better than in 1962 but was appreciably worse than in 1.961. For nonfatal injuries, the 1963 record was slightly worse than in 1962 but was better than in 1961. The injury--severity rate of 2,913 days lost or charged per million man-hours in 1963 was better than that of 3,046 in 1962, the first year for which such data became available. The average severity of all injuries in 1963 was 160 days lost or charged per injury, 15 less than in 1962. An average of 91,960 men were at work on active days in 1963 and these men had an aggregate worktime of 193.7 million man-hours during the year.

A study of literature on the epidiorite dykes which transgress the Broken Hill lode and its wall rocks reveals a considerable diversity of thought regarding the time of emplacement of such dykes. In this paper it is deduced that the epidiorite dykes were formed at a late stage and were probably post-ore. Detailed mapping, sampling, and correlation of data from over 100 exposures substantiates this deduction. Physical disruption of the epidiorite dykes is indicated and some interaction of the epidiorite and ore at the time of intrusion is inferred.Further petrological study may confirm this.

AFTER the completion, in 1905, of the Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, it became necessary to secure and assay a large assortment of ore-samples, and to arrange the results in such a manner as to admit of use with the least amount of work on the part of the instructor. At first, pulp-samples, together with their respective assays, were secured from the mines, smelters, and public assayers, but this practice did not prove satisfactory. It was not only difficult to secure a sufficiently large supply of material, but it was also impossible to secure the proper assortment required for instructing students. It involved considerable work for the donors to select the samples and furnish a record of the assays, and also for the instructors to examine each pulp and determine its character. Some of the samples did not contain a sufficient quantity of pulp for the student to check his work in case his first assay did not correspond to the record. In order to increase the number of samples and to vary the character of the material, pulp-samples were later mixed with barren rock and with sulphides, but this method also was unsatisfactory and has been discontinued. At present., small lots of ore are secured by gift or purchase from engineers, public assayers, and the managers of mines, mills, and smelters. These lots weigh from 10 to 100 lb. each, and are rarely finer than 0.25 in. in size. The larger samples permit of a careful study by the instructor in order to determine the best method of assaying to be followed. A clear understanding of the meanings of terms is important when discussing a project. Whether it is a submission, an investment study, a feasibility study, an environmental impact statement, an estimate, a tender, a contract, or a close-out.report, the need for all parties involved to understand what is under discussion or what has been written is paramount. The clarity of definition and the level of understanding can affect the outcome of the project. It is vital that all parties know what is wanted, what is expected, and what it will cost. This paper draws attention to some of the problems that beset many projects, clients, project managers and contractors, and it is hoped that its presentation will encourage us to pay more attention to defining what it is that is required. Ultimately we should all be the richer for having defined and understood the requirements at the beginning rather than at the end.

"The drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a coproduct of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut off 10 percent of the world’s vanadium output. In February 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation.This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries — China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 96 percent of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage.This article summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal.Trend in vanadium explorationThe most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grades than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers.The 10 percent shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the state of Bahia in Brazil. It commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to produce between 7.6 and 8.6 kt (8,421 and 9,523 st) of V2O5 in 2016 at a target production cost of $3.71/lb (Largo Resources, 2016). This is the first primary vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in more than 35 years."

Today, mine backfilling has become an integral part of mining operations, both from a local and overall ground control point of view, and as regards mining techniques and environmental considerations. During the past decade, substantial research has been carried out to contribute to the better understanding of the mechanisms involved in mine backfill behaviour. This work involved analytical, experimental and numerical studies at different scales. Accordingly, this work has been aimed at developing backfill design guidelines for actual working conditions. Backfill design for deep mining conditions is complex and requires understanding of various elements. The most important of these elements are: backfill inherent strength parameters, backfill placement method, stope geometry and interaction between backfill and host rock. The mobilization of backfill strength parameters controls the backfill behaviour and thus, its failure mode. It is believed that the governing boundary conditions and backfill-rock interaction influence the backfill strength mobilization significantly. Accordingly, the interaction between backfill and host rock is an influential factor in overall backfill behaviour under applied loads. The focus of this research is to investigate the backfill-rock interaction, considering a nonlinear behaviour for both backfill and rock mass. Assuming typical stope geometry, the FLAC code was used to model the complex boundary condition associated with narrow vein mining conditions and to simulate the backfill behaviour. A comprehensive numerical study was conducted and the results obtained were compared against field observations. The analysis of findings provides qualitative results, which can be used for backfill design.
