It?s a pleasure to be with you in Vancouver today to reinforce the good work you and your companies do to develop and operationalize new technology as a lever to improve operational performance and reduce our impact on the environment in absolute terms. Although I will use the work we do at Shell to reinforce this perspective, the principles apply to all of us in this industry regardless of whether you are a producer or supplier. I?d like to help demystify the future of Canada?s oil sands based on Shell?s view of global energy developments, including forecasted demand. One of the incontrovertible truths of this era of global energy defines change as an unchangeable law of progress. Another tells us that the art of progress is to preserve order amid change and to preserve change amid order. These axioms help frame the increasingly public debate about the future of Canada?s oil sands. I hope to illustrate how Shell?s commitment and investments create positive progress that embraces change amid order in the oil sands. I?m going to spend a little time today to focus the spotlight on the future of the oil sands to help demystify Canada?s hydrocarbon energy future. To do that, I?ll identify the features of our future energy security, including three hard truths about global energy that drive Shell?s business imperatives. Then, it?s instructive to examine Canadians? current consciousness about oil sands sustainability.

Constant-strain rotating-bending fatigue tests were conducted on 2024-T3 aluminum alloy constant-strain McAdams-type specimens in ultrahigh vacuum, 10-lo Torr, and in atmospheric air. In the elastic strain range the ratio of vacuum-to-air fatigue life varied from about 10 at a maximum bending stress of 37 ksi to near unity at the endurance limit. After 10 pct of the fatigue life, intergvanular microcracks appeared on the surface which did not appreciably propagate further until the last 5 pct of the fatigue life, where trans-granular cracks propagating first in slip-plane cracking and then in the stress-dominated mode led to failure. No reduction in residual tensile strength resulted from the fatigue of the specimens short of fracture. The mechanism governing the fatigue life operates between the occurrence of the intergranular microcracks and the initiation of the trans granular cracks. MORE than forty years ago, Mc Adam' and Haigh2 published the first systematic studies showing that the fatigue properties of metals were greatly affected by environments. Gough and sopwith3 found in a later study that the fatigue life of metals subject to corrosion can be substantially increased by reducing the atmospheric pressure. This and their later work4'5 was, however, done in a vacuum of only 10~3 Torr. Subsequent studies6-' at a vacuum of 10- Torr showed that water vapor is the primary agent affecting the fatigue properties of aluminum alloys. Only recently was ultrahigh vacuum used for fatigue studied.l Various theories have been put forward to explain this phenomenon. Wadsworth and Hutchings12 postulated that cracks form very early in the test and that the chemical attack by the corrosive components of the atmosphere at the root of the cracks enhances the speed of the crack propagation. They also noted that chemisorbed layers of gas on the fresh crack surfaces prevent cold welding of the crack and make the separation irreversible. Ham and Reichenbach, on the other hand, reported that their specimens showed no cracks after a run in vacuum, even though the runs were long enough to have caused the specimen to fracture in atmospheric air. They also reported that in argon at 0.14 Torr the fatigue life was about 5 times longer than at 7 X lo-' Torr. Jacisinll reported that fatigue tests in dry nitrogen showed results close to those obtained in ultrahigh vacuum. The present experiment was designed to determine the extent to which cumulative fatigue damage, i.e., the accumulation of length of fatigue cracks, reduces the residual static tensile strength of an aluminum alloy in both ultrahigh vacuum and atmospheric air and to obtain fatigue-life data for this aluminum alloy at various strains. It was also hoped that information ex- tracted from these data might support one of the previously mentioned theories. 1) EXPERIMENT Test Specimens. The material tested was commer-cial 2024-T3 aluminum alloy. In addition to aluminum, this alloy contains approximately 4.4 pct Cu, 0.5 pct Fe, 0.5 pct Si, 0.6 pct Mn, 1.5 pct Mg, plus smaller amounts of other elements.13 Some typical mechanical properties of this aluminum alloy are listed in Table I.'~ The material was used in the as-received condition, i.e., solution-treated and cold-worked. As equipes de manutenção das pontes de Vega não possuíam uma ferramenta de armazenamento de dados de longo prazo, que permitisse analise de falhas e a avaliação das condições operacionais necessárias à manutenção preditiva. Com essa deficiência, as condições de ocorrência de paradas não programadas eram favorecidas. Fazia-se necessário uma ferramenta que permitisse o desenvolvimento de aplicações mais sofisticadas para monitoramento de equipamentos das Pontes Rolantes, além de que todo diagnóstico realizado era localmente na ponte e com as informações atuais (posteriores ao evento ocorrido). Após a implantação os ganhos foram satisfatórios, reduziu-se o tempo de atendimento das ocorrências, a planta se adequou ao padrão mundial de Prevenção de Fatalidades do grupo ArcelorMittal, reduzindo o trabalho em altura, exposição do executante ao risco, custo de manutenção e quantidade de paradas não planejadas, além de suportar o foco na manutenção preventiva e preditiva.

O estudo do sopro de oxigênio no EOF é muito complexo e envolve diferentes fenômenos, incluindo o desenvolvimento do jato supersônico, a interação do jato com o ambiente ao seu redor e o banho metálico, onde ocorrem importantes reações. No presente trabalho, diferentes alternativas de desenho de lança e bicos e arranjos desses no interior do EOF são desenvolvidos a interação do jato supersônico com o ambiente do banho metálico foi caracterizada. Para o EOF, o objetivo foi determinar a melhor combinação de variação de injetores e vazões para alcançar o menor tempo de mistura, estabelecendo um novo padrão operacional. Os injetores tiveram pouca relevância no tempo de mistura. Ventaneiras e lanças supersônicas apresentaram os menores tempos de mistura. A lanças supersônicas tem influência nos mecanismos de movimento do banho e projeção de material líquido no EOF, enquanto as ventaneiras afetam o movimento do banho.

In recent years drivage advance rates in the UK have in- creased from 35m per week in the 1980's to 100/150m per week possible today. These extended rates of advance have resulted in an increase in the potential methane, dust and heat generation at the drivage face. In order to disperse this additional pollutant load requires an increase of fresh air at the face. Although advance rates have changed, current auxiliary ventilation practice has not. UK mining law requires that the fresh air must be delivered to within 5m of the face. This has lead to the wide spread use of overlap auxiliary systems, since a pure forcing system set at this distance would lead to excessive airborne dust. UK mining law does not at present consider on-board mounted exhaust scrubber fans to constitute an effective overlap fan within mechanised drivages. In an attempt to determine whether working conditions could be safely and economically improved within mechanised drivages, a series of preliminary full scale gallery trials were con- ducted. A summary of the principal findings of these trials are presented together with an outline of a series of representative CFD simulations, scale model experiments.

"SUMMARY The Hachinoshiri tunnel is a 2,469 m long two-lane road tunnel on the Chubu-Odan Expressway. Since more than 70% of the total tunnel length consists of low strength rock masses the competence factor of which is less than 1.0, it is expected that a self standing span cannot be achievable because of no ground arch to be established. The tunnel was thus designed with tunnel support patterns forming multi-arc early ring closure that can develop the load-carrying capacity estimated from the exerted earth pressure, Po, which can result from the competence factor, cf. The tunnel support pattern was selected based on the competence factor at tunnel face, then the subsequent tunnel support patterns were determined with reference to the monitoring data. The tunnel construction adopted full-face excavation accompanied by early ring closure using a 330 kW road header. The proposed construction methods at this tunnel site have turned out ensuring tunnelling in massive squeezing rock, so that they can be verified as reasonable tunnelling technologies, clarifying the relationship between the characteristics of the mechanical behaviour of the tunnel and its design parameters. INTRODUCTION The presence of highly weathered mudstone having the competence factor less than 1.0 where the tunnel became unstable with the early ring closure having the distance to early ring closure, Lf, of 6 meters, resulting in difficulty in maintaining the inner section of the tunnel, prompted a substantial amount of high strength double support and replacing of the tunnel support (Sato et al., 2015). Based on the mechanical characteristics learned from the construction, the mechanical stability of multi-arc tunnels was investigated using 3D FDM analyses with respect to the ratio of the radius for early ring closure, r3/r1, and the distance to early ring closure, Lf, so that tunnel support patterns for early ring closure can be established in terms of the competence factor, of, which was employed for a 725 m long section. Consequently the tunnel support patterns for early ring closure which can be determined from the competence factor became applicable to tunnel construction. The relationship between the characteristics of the mechanical behaviour of the tunnel and its mechanical parameters was also clarified. The early ring closure method adopted ensured tunnelling in massive squeezing rock, verifying its effectiveness in stabilizing the tunnel."

Desde os anos 60, com o desenvolvimento do Método de Elementos Finitos (FEM) e a sua aplicação via métodos computacionais, a simulação numérica é uma ferramenta que está sendo cada vez mais utilizada para o conhecimento dos processos de fabricação, além de sugerir melhoria dos parâmetros na fabricação de peças. A utilização da simulação numérica permite evitar gastos desnecessários e perdas, investimentos em protótipos e testes dispendiosos, bem como para melhorar a qualidade do produto acabado.Neste trabalho são comparados os valores da força de trefilação necessária para fabricar arames de aço baixo carbono, para uma redução, medidos através do método de elementos finito e cálculo utilizando a equação de Siebel. Com este trabalho foi obtido a modelagem computacional do processo de trefilação, comparativo entre os métodos de medição da força de trefilação, maior compreensão do processo de trefilação e das propriedades mecânicas de arames trefilados.

Sodion activity data have been obtained for the Na-A1 system for sodium concentrations in aluminum between NN, = 25 . 10-and 300 x 10'. This concentration intert-a2 encompasses those sodium concentrations nor1)zally encountered in aluminum reduction cell operation. The sodium activity data were measured by a two-phase equilibration of sodium between a lead and an aluminam rich phase. The Na-Pb system was emplojed as a reference for the determination of the actiz7itj 0.f sodium. The activity of sodiin in aluminuwz exhibits large positi2.e deviations frorn ideality and a strong dependence, on concentration below NN, = 100 x 1K6. The inteated data indicate that the activity of aluminium is equal to its mole fraction over the range of miscibility of the Na-A1 sgstem. The data on the Na-A1 binary have been combined with experimental data on the cryolite-A1 system at 1025°C to obtain the activities of Na F and AlF, in liquid cryolite oz2er the cornposition 1-ange encountered in aluminum cell operation. The results are in agreement with activities calculated from the NaF-AlF, phase diagram. ALUMINUM is produced commercially by the electrolytic reduction of aluminum oxide dissolved in molten cryolite. There is considerable controversy over the actual mechanism of the discharge processes, but sodium potentials in the systems appear to play an important role in the reduction mechanism. The metal-salt reaction involving NaF and aluminum to produce A1F3 and sodium is responsible for the presence of sodium in the aluminum metal phase. Additional sodium may be produced from the simultaneous deposition of sodium and aluminum at the cathode as a result of a cathodic overvoltage. runert' has suggested that sodium gas at atmospheric pressure would be the result of reaction between cryolite and aluminum at 1000°C. Subsequent investigations have shown that production of sodium at atmospheric pressure does not occur. These later investigations can be conveniently separated into two categories. The first involves sodium, aluminum, and cryolite, in which the sodium activity was measured. The second includes a lead phase for sodium activity measurement. Jander and errmann,' studied the reaction: at 1090°C in alumina crucibles under an atmosphere of dry, oxygen-free nitrogen. The equilibrium constant for the reaction was expressed in terms of concentration. Their results in Fig. 1 show an increase in sodium content of the aluminum with increasing NaF/A1F3 weight ratio. Pearson and waddington3 performed similar experiments at 1000°C. Their results are included in Fig. 1. Dewing and ollinshead have measured the sodium content of aluminum as a function of the NF/AF, ratio at 1025"C, Fig. 1, and ewin' measured the sodium content of the aluminum in a system involving the solid reactants NaF, cryolite, and liquid aluminum. This reaction is different from those discussed above. Two solid phases, NaF and Na3A1F6, and a liquid aluminum phase were present. The sodium concentration in the aluminum was determined by the temperature. Dewing's measurements covered the temperature range 679" to 896°C. Segundo dados da Associação Brasileira de Celulose o parque produtor esta diversificado em diversas partes do pais. Na região noroeste fluminense esta localizada a Cia Paduana de Papeis – COPAPA que produz aproximadamente 36.000 ton/ano de papel e 13.500 ton/ano de resíduo. Sem um destino adequado para este material tornou-se necessário o estudo da incorporação do mesmo em argamassas. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o efeito da incorporação do resíduo da produção de papel na trabalhabilidade de argamassas de múltiplo-uso através do ensaio de determinação do índice de consistência. Os resultados mostraram que com uma incorporação de até 20% sobre a massa de cal a argamassa continua com parâmetros de trabalhabilidade, podendo ser empregada na construção civil

Some of you undoubtedly aren't quite sure what gainsharing is, while others obviously have gainsharing plans in place and are looking for ways to improve them. Single crystals of Pbl-xSnxTe have been grown from nonstoichiometric, cation-rich melts with the objective of producing as-grown, bulk material containing carrier concentrations ranging from 1016 per cu cm to 1018 per cu cm. Three specific crystal composi-tions were investigated in detail; x = 0.00, 0.10, and 0.17. Pull rates of from I to 3 mm per hr were used. Single crystals were successfully pulled from melts containing as little as 30 at. pct Te. Hall coefficients, resistivities, and carrier mobilities of these materials were determined. The relationship between the composition of the melt and the carrier concentration in the as-grown crystal has been studied for the three crystal compositions of interest. BULK single crystals of Pb,-,Sn,Te have previously been grown from stoichiometric melts.1,2 Such crystals are p-type and have relatively high carrier concentrations ranging from -9 x 1018 per cu cm for PbTe to -8 x l020 per cu cm for SnTe at 77°K. These carrier concentrations result from deviations from stoichiometry (lead vacancies) in the as-grown crystals. Since lower carrier concentrations are desirable for electrooptic device applications, these crystals are usually subjected to long-term, isothermal anneals.' This paper reports on the growth of Pbl-xSnxTe single crystals from nonstoichiometric melts with the primary objective of producing as-grown material containing relatively low (1016 to 1018 per cu cm) carrier concentrations and also reports on the general characteristics of these crystals. The phase relationships in the Pbl-xSnxTe systems are such that materials solidifying from nonstoichiometric, cation-rich melts will have smaller deviations from stoichiometry than materials grown from stoichiometric melts. Fig. 1 is the T-x phase diagram for PbTe in the vicinity of the stoichiometric composition.3 A crystal grown from a stoichiometric melt will solidify at a melting point maximum at which the solid will contain -0.5002 atom fraction of tellurium. PbTe single crystals grown in our laboratories from stoichiometric melts have carrier concentrations of 9 x 10" per cu cm, indicating that the excess tellurium in the crystals is as expected from this phase diagram. However, growth of PbTe from a lead-rich melt will result in material having a more nearly stoichiometric composition. Although the addition of Sn to the melt shifts the solidus curve further toward the tellurium-rich side,4 the general discussion given for PbTe applies to the Pbl-xSnxTe systems as well. EXPERIMENTAL Single crystals of Pb1-xSnxTe have been grown in our laboratories from nonstoichiometric, cation-rich melts using the Czochralski technique and boric oxide liquid encapsulation. The details of the growth apparatus and growth technique have been reported in a previous paper on growth of these alloys from stoichiometric melts.2 In the present study, three specific crystal compositions were investigated in detail; x = 0.00, 0.10, and 0.17. Growth of alloy crystals from nonstoichiometric melts requires considerable care, and good quality single crystals were obtained in this study only by optimizing the mechanical and thermal stability of the growth system and by using pull rates of from 1 to 3 mm per hr (Pbl-xSnxTe crystals are easily pulled from stoichiometric melts at rates of from 5 to 10 mm per hr). The liquid encapsulation technique was found to yield near-ideal conditions, since the B2O3 layer increased the thermal stability at the growth interface, permitted easy attainment of near-ideal thermal gradients, and dampened vibrations at the melt surface. The hygroscopic character of the B2O3 was a slight problem and vacuum heat treating was necessary to completely remove the water from the boric oxide. During initial growth, the seed diameter was reduced and a narrow neck (1 to 2 mm diam) of several millimeters length was grown. This paper concerns measurements of low-velocity air currents and investigations on mine ventilation by means of chemical smoke. The chemical smoke used is produced without flame and at ordinary mine temperatures, and therefore presents no ignition hazard in gaseous mines. Mining men who have worked in open-light mines are familiar with the use of tobacco smoke in determining the direction of air travel and approximately measuring low-velocity air currents. The use of chemical smoke is merely a refinement on the use of tobacco smoke and the flameless low-temperature source of chemical smoke has the additional advantage that it can be used in gaseous mines. Ventilation smoke apparatus, Fig I, is a simple device for producing dense white smoke. The apparatus as shown consists of a rubber aspirator bulb which is used to force air through a glass "smoke tube" containing a chemical substance that produces a dense white smoke on contact with air. The apparatus was developed by engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.' It is inexpensive, weighs less than 3 oz, is easily carried in a pocket, and requires no skill to operate. Smoke apparatus is invaluable in practical mine ventilation work for: (I) measuring low-velocity air currents, (2) detecting air leakage, (3) observing airflow characteristics. This paper is written to show the merits of the apparatus, and is based upon findings through its extensive use, during the past six years, in mines operated by the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. The Apparatus Certain chemicals, such as stannic chloride (SnCl4) and pyrosulphuric acid (H2S2O7) produce "white smoke" when exposed to air. Stannic chloride gives off vapors which on contact with moist air cause the formation of solid hydrates, of which SnCl4.5H20 is the most important. Pyrosulphuric acid decomposes when exposed to air with the evolution of sulphur trioxide (SO3) fumes, which become white upon contacting moisture in the air. A chemical, such as one of the above, is the active substance in a smoke tube. The glass tubes are hermetically sealed during manufacture, and are made ready for use by merely breaking off the tips at the conveniently located file cuts. When the smoke tube is connected to the aspirator, depressing the aspirator bulb forces air into contact with the chemical, and smoke discharges from the open end of the tube. A white solid (a hydrate if stannic chloride is used, or sulphur trioxide if pyrosulphuric acid is used) may occasionally form a cake in the outlet opening of a smoke tube. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating longwall mining-induced strata fractures and their impacts on casing stability of Marcellus shale gas wells located in longwall pillars. To understand the extent of overburden fractures after longwall mining, NIOSH researchers drilled a post-mining corehole into the fractured strata above the Pittsburgh coal seam longwall gob. Knowing the extent of the fracture zone height will help gas operators minimize the hazards of drilling into longwall gobs. The core was retrieved from the surface down to the top of the gob void. Various fractures were encountered varying from 35 to 64°, depending on lithologic type and relative closeness to the gob. The longwall panel dimension was 457-m wide and 3657-m long, in which the total fracture zone height was found to be at 141 m and the hydraulic connected fracture zone at 87.7 m above the top of the Pittsburgh seam. In addition to core drilling through the gob, FLAC3D modeling was also used to simulate the formation of fracture zone and the orientations of longwall-induced fractures. This study provides much-needed evidence on the fracture zone of Pittsburgh seam longwall gobs to help gas operators avoid potential hazards associated with drilling through highly fractured zones in longwall gobs.

In this paper, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry have been applied to investigate the effects of Nd2O3 concentration on the anode effects, critical potential for the anode effects and Nd2O3 reduction in LiF-NdF3-Nd2O3 melts at 950℃. The results show that the oxidation peaks in the potential of about 2.7V are attributed to the oxygen ions oxidation and the peak current density increases with Nd2O3 concentration increase from 0 to 0.5wt%. The critical potential caused the anode effects shifts to 0.3V more positive value as Nd2O3 content in the melts decreases from 0.01wt% to 0.5wt%. The cyclic votammograms on W electrodes in the LiF-NdF3-Nd2O3 melts present two pairs of reduction and oxidation peaks, indicating that the reduction of Nd ions in the LiF-NdF3-Nd2O3 melts in two steps rather than one step.

O trabalho consiste na avaliação das Tensões Residuais através da técnica dos Furos-Cegos. O componente em estudo consiste em chapas de Aço A36 aplicadas para compor a estrutura de prensas hidraulicas. Com auxílio do software Solid Works versão 2013, foi realizado a simulação do estado de tensões sofridos pelas chapas quando a prensa hidraulica encontra-se em trabalho, determinando assim o seu fator de segurança. Em seguida, pelo método da aproximação sucessiva, foi adicionado furos-cegos ou furos passantes com diâmetros variados ao longo da geometria das chapas a fim de verificar o comportamento dos estados de tensões. Portanto, através da aplicação de furos-cegos nas chapas, foi possível identificar o diâmetro e posição ideal que permitiu um ganho significativo no fator de segurança das chapas, permitindo assim, reduzir o número de chapas no processo impactando diretamente nos custos e no tempo de fabricação do equipamento.

The concentrator treats sulfide ore containing lead, copper, zinc, gold and silver, at the rate of 850 tons per 24 hr., and produces lead, copper, zinc and iron concentrates by selective flotation methods. The ore occurs below the oxidized zone along a main fracture, the wall rock of which is either greywacke or calcareous shale. The predominating sulfide minerals are galena, sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite; the others are quartz and calcite. In minor amounts, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and hematite occur, and such secondary minerals as smithsonite, chalcocite, covellite, bornite, cerussite and anglesite are detected in the ore, the last two named occurring principally as surface alterations of the galena. The ore is hauled from the mine bins in 10-ton cars which pass over the track scales before entering the car dumper ahead of the crusher plant.' A conveyor belt delivers the crushed ore to the sulfide bin, which has a capacity of 2800 tons. The primary grinding unit consists of two 6 by 12-ft. Marcy rod mills operating in parallel and in open circuit, each taking 425 tons per day. One rod mill discharges into an 8 by 25-ft. Dorr classifier with a 12-ft. bowl and the other into a 6 by 25-ft. Dorr duplex classifier. These classifiers are arranged so that each unit rakes the sands into a 6 by 14-ft. Traylor ball mill, which discharges to the bowl classifier only. The duplex classifier therefore operates in open circuit and the bowl classifier in closed circuit, the overflow of both classifiers furnishing the feed for the flotation section. Other groupings have been tried, but this has been found the most satisfactory. The Marcy mills are driven by 150-hp. slip-ring induction motors with speed reducers to give 17 r.p.m. The Traylor mill operates at a speed of 24 r.p.m. and is driven by a 200-hp. slip-ring induction motor, direct connected to pinion and gear. The bowl classifier operates at a speed of 22 r.p.m., with the bowl rake making 4.5 r.p.m. and the duplex classifier at 31 r.p.m. High-carbon steel rods of Mexican manufacture, 12 ft. long by 3-in. diameter, are used in the Marcy mills, with a resulting consumption of 1.52 Ib. per ton ore. Yielding rock bolt systems have been developed to provide ground support while accommodating shifting, creeping, or swelling ground movements. The Dywidag Systems, Inc. (DSI) Slip Nut System is one such system. It has been tested in the laboratory and installed and monitored in the interbedded halite and anhydrite at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) since 1994. The Slip Nut System is installed on a point anchored threaded bar or on a threaded bar coupled to a cable bolt. At a pre-engineered load the nut acts as a die and cuts through the thread on which it rests, thereby reducing the load and coming to rest on the next thread where the process repeats. Two types of laboratory tests were performed using slip nuts on DSI's threaded bars and their Tensionable Cable bolts. Straight pull tests exceeding 0.3m (1 ft.) of displacement were performed on the systems. Also, offset tests were performed on these bolt systems in a test frame designed to simulate WIPP geologic conditions. A room scale test area consisting of 186 threaded bars began in 1994. Select bolts were instrumented to track bolt load. All bolts were tracked through time for operation. Through three complete years since installation over twelve slips, corresponding to approximately 0.15m (6 in.) of ground movement, have been observed in some areas. Since installation strata offset has exceeded 0.08m (3 in.) at a supported clay layer in the roof. No bolt failures have been observed. Slip loads observed underground generally approximate those observed in the lab. To date, the slip nut systems tested and installed have performed as expected.

"Cadmium telluride (CdTe) is a very interesting material that has many applications. Thin films of p-type CdTe can be used as the absorber layer in the heterojunction CdS/CdTe thin film solar cells in which n-type cadmium sulfide (CdS) works as the window layer. A review of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra ofp-type CdTe thin films prepared by different techniques was performed. The presence of defects and impurities such as oxygen and chlorine influence the PL spectrum. Copper and other dopants change the PL spectra and enhance the defects band. Chemical-heat treatment especially with CdCh is known to improve the quality of CdTe thin films because it decreases the Cd vacancies and quenches deep traps, so it enhances the PL signal. A discussion of chemical-heat treatment especially with CdCh, the effect of the ambient atmosphere, and that of the measuring temperature is performed.IntroductionCadmium telluride (CdTe) is a II-VI compound semiconductor that has a cubic zincblende (sphalerite) structure with a lattice constant of 0 A4~11]. Other than all of II -VI semiconductors, CdTe can be made both n- and p-type. But due to self compensation it is not easy to get p-type CdTe films [2]. Polycrystalline CdTe thin films are interesting because they have a lot of applications. Most of the problems associated with the use of these films are attributed to inhomogeneity, self-compensation, and the difficulty of forming a stable and lowresistivity ohmic contact [3]. CdTe technology has been established for a large number of applications, including solar cells, optical and nuclear detectors, and thermal- and radiationimaging devices [3]. At present, the highest demonstrated conversion efficiency for a CdTe based heterojunction (ID), with CdS as a window layer, is 16.5% [4, 5]. CdTe thin films can be prepared by different experimental techniques, such as thermal evaporation [l], electrochemical deposition (ED) [3], close-spaced sublimation (CSS) [3, 4, 6], physical vapor deposition (PVD) [3], chemical molecular beam deposition (CMBD) [7], and close space vapor transport (CSVT) [8].The objective of this paper is to make a review of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra ofp-type CdTe thin films prepared by different techniques and discuss the factors that influence the PL spectra. The composition of the film is very interesting in determining its PL spectrum. Different kinds of defects, impurities and dopants have their finger prints in the PL spectrum. Deposition techniques and deposition parameters such as the deposition temperature and ambient atmosphere also have their influence. Heat and chemical treatments which are known to improve crystallization and reduce the defects change the PL spectrum."
