High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are employed in cement plants worldwide. Although the technology has been mastered in the majority of applications, design-, scale-up- and operationalchallenges still exist today. In addition to modelling throughput, energy requirement and comminution success, the prediction and avoidance of malfunctions is of great importance in current research. The performance of the mill is highly influenced by the roll speed and the fineness of the feed material. Another parameter influencing the composition of mill feed is the circulating load, which is determined by the grinding circuit configuration, the target fineness and the separation efficiency of the classifier. In order to meet this circumstance and simultaneously maintain a reasonable level of material input and testing effort, a complete grinding circuit on a small technical scale was set up in the research centre of Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions AG. The present study varied the roll speed (0.5-2 m/s) and the proportion of fines in the feed (0-75 %) in order to investigate the influence of both parameters on the finish grinding of a Portland cement with a target fineness of 4000 cm²/g according to Blain. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating the feasibility of partitioning complex sulfide minerals to simpler sulfide .phases by sulfldation reactions. Such partitioning can afford opportunity to improve selective extraction of mineral constituents of value. This report describes initial research involving sulfidation partitioning of chalcopyrite concentrates. Small chalcopyrite samples were sulfidized with elemental sulfur in glass capsules sealed after evacuating and backfilling with helium, by heating for 1 to 24 h at specific temperatures in the range of 250° to 500° C. which extends from below to above the boiling point of sulfur (-445° C). Above the boiling point of sulfur, the overall reaction with adequate sulfur (13.9 wt pct of CuFeS2) is 5CuFeS2 + 4S g ? Cu5FeS6 + 4FeS2.

The influence of the temperature on leaching kinetics of copper-bearing minerals has been widely acknowledged: the leaching of copper oxide ores is generally described as exothermic reactions while copper sulfide ores are associated with endothermic reactions. Reports studying the influence of temperature on leaching kinetics at laboratory scale frequently involve the implementation of either fully flooded isothermal systems or jacketed column setups. Nevertheless, at industrial scale controlling or monitoring the temperature or temperature changes is almost impractical. In fact, leaching process is usually a large tonnage operation and changing the temperature of vast amounts of material would require an enormous amount of energy and highly specific heat transfer equipment. Preliminary computations on the amount of energy required to increase the temperature of a heap or dump in 1°C indicates that it would be impossible to find an energy source able to accomplish the task. In order to provide a solution to this matter it is suggested to create an energy managing protocol (EMP) that permits heat up or down the porous body locally taking advantage from the temperature gradients and from the reactivity of different regions within the material as a function of the leaching cycles. The aim of this study is to evaluate different heat transfer regimes in a 1 ton pilot column leach operation. It was found that best results of copper recovery are obtained when heating up the column in horizontal bands starting from the top of the column moving downwards as the leach cycle evolves. The system is expected to be suitable for industrial applications, but further development of the technique is required, particularly in the design of the heat transfer dispositive.

The mechanism shown here (Fig. 1) may not be all that it appears to be. To many of you it may look like a hopper car, a thing of mobility, in which you would ship coal, ores, limestone, or other bulk materials. It is approximately 50 feet long, 12 feet high, and can be placed on tracks which are on approximate 14 foot centers. But far too often in the past, and all too often today, this mechanism has been made to serve as an immobile storage box, with its primary role -- the transportation of products, seemingly incidental to the storage function. Our engineering training teaches us to conserve resources, despite some of the popular and misconceived philosophies being advanced these days. Those of you who work for companies with traffic departments know that they are always striving to reduce the price which is paid to move your mine products. Today, let's consider and analyze the ways in which the cost of transporting your mine products might be reduced, based on particular reference to coal. Bear in mind that in this context, cost and price are not necessarily synonymous. Until a few years ago, most coal and other bulk materials handled by railroads moved under standard tariff rules. These rules, which still exist today, provided transportation vehicles (railroad cars) for extended periods at no added price to the shipper or receiver. The concept of vertical pit mining has been developed as an alternative mining method for the exploitation from surface of small, vertical or near-vertical, massive orebodies down to depths of some 200 m, where ore extraction from conventional open pit excavations is rendered uneconomic due to high associated waste:ore mining ratio. Systematic lateral support maintains vertical pit sides, thereby minimising waste mining volumes. Stability analysis techniques have been developed for design of this lateral support, with the support quantum, primarily comprising long cable anchors, dependent upon country rock strength characteristics and pit configuration. Where the cost of support is less than the cost of the comparable conventional pit waste excavation, vertical pit mining becomes an economically viable alternative, additionally providing the benefit of reduced environmental impact and rehabilitation requirements for the mining area. The technique has been successfully applied for the mining of a chrome deposit in Zimbabwe to an 80 m depth, believed to be unique in the world, and a full feasibilty study for a 3000 m2 diamond pipe has been carried out for mining to 200 m depth.

(New York Meeting, October, 1913.) THE Fremont test for measuring the energy consumed in breaking a notched bar of steel is not so well known in this country as it deserves to be. The test specimen used in this test is about 3/8 by 1/4 by about 11/4 in., notched with a hack saw on the lower side to cause the piece to break at a fixed point. A weight of 10 kg. falling 4 m., and provided with a knife or. chisel which strikes the specimen, breaks the test piece by impact. The residual force in the falling weight after it has broken the specimen is recorded by a suitable device, and the difference between the total energy and the residual energy of the weight (in kilogrammeters) is the force consumed in breaking the specimen. An experience of several years with the Fremont testing machine has shown its great value in readily detecting brittleness not revealed by tensile testing or slow bending testing. In this paper it is proposed to discuss (1) the supersensitiveness of the test as applied to cast steel and (2) its value in revealing the effect of heat treatment under certain conditions.

Leo-potpourri, was selected as the title to this paper for several reasons. First, it is a fascinating word--not looking like it sounds or sounding like it looks. It also allows for a great degree of flexibility in designing a presentation around it. Further, it has become popular to use this eco hyphen something pattern. We hear of eco-mania, eco-hysteria and the like. Lastly, in this era of intense environmental concern, two of the principle elements on which the integrity of our efforts must be equated are ecology and economics. Accordingly, the term "Eco-potpourris" allows me to roam at will through the great number of considerations that make up this environmental issue. Whereas only a few years ago the subject of environment and environmental control had low visibility with the public, today it competes as the focus of attention with the many other popular social issues of our time. The program content here at this meeting, for example, is liberally represented by papers dealing with one or more aspects of environmental concern. If one would look at the 1964 program, in contrast, I would expect that no more than possibly one or two papers covered this subject and even then that those papers dealt principally with the environmental aspect of occupational health. It is gratifying that the program at this meeting demonstrates a serious awareness to a broad spectrum of environmental concerns. It would be a mistake, of course, to believe that this clamor for a quality environment is a "flash in the pan" that will soon subside. "The property of Arntfield Mining Corporation, formerly Arntfield Gold Mines, Limited, covers an area of 2,110 acres and lies in Beauchastel township, western Quebec. The Francoeur mine lies to the west, and to the east are the West Wasa and Wasa Lake properties.The property was staked in September, 1923, by the late F. S. Arntfield. The early surface work was concentrated in the west part of the property along the Francoeur-Arntfield shear zone. The zone was opened by No. 1 shaft, which was sunk for an inclined depth of 250 feet. A series of silicified lenses were discovered farther east, where No. 2 shaft was later raised to the surface. A third shaft explored a shear zone about 1,900 feet to the east, where No. 3 shaft orebodies were developed.The mill was built at No. 3 shaft and production commenced in July, 1935, at 125 tons a day. This was increased to 280 tons by 1938, and later to 350 tons. The mine continued operations on this scale until April, 1942, when the exigencies of war necessitated closing. The Company was reorganized in 1944 and underground development was resumed in June, 1945. The total value of gold and silver produced to April, 1942, was $2,011, 755 from 529,987 tons of ore.ROCK TYPESThe area is underlain by highly deformed and altered Keewatin volcanics overlain by little deformed Cobalt sediments along the south boundary. The lavas in the vicinity of the mine workings are rhyolite, trachyte, andesite, and a flow breccia of intermediate composition. The fragmentals range from fine, well-bedded tuffs to coarse agglomerate in which acidic and basic horizons can be distinguished.The intrusive rocks are diorite and quartz-feldspar porphyry in the form of stock and sills, and narrow dykes of mica lamprophyre and syenite porphyry."

"Nickel powder can be produced by the reduction of a nickel ammine complex solution by hydrogen at high temperature and pressure. To minimize the deposition of fine nickel on the surface of the reactor and other equipment, seed crystals are added to the initial solution to promote nucleation of the nickel powder. Such seed crystals catalyze the precipitation of the nickel particles on the surface of the seed and enhance grain growth. In this study, nickel nuclei were precipitated by the addition of a polymer to the nickel ammine complex solution, resulting in the production of nickel powder. Thus, we herein propose a model that explains the effect of the polymer in the precipitation of nickel nuclei.INTRODUCTIONNickel powder is commonly produced via a hydrometallurgical process from the hydrogen reduction of a solution containing a nickel ammine complex at high temperatures and pressures, and this process was commercialized in the 1950s by Sherritt Gordon (Sherritt International, Canada, Benson & Colvin,1973; The Staff, Research and Development Division, Sherritt Gordon Mines, Ltd., 1958).In the above transformation, upon the injection of hydrogen gas into the solution, nickel is reduced as outlined in Equation(1), ultimately resulting in the production of nickel powder.Ni(NH3)nSO4+ H2?Ni+ (NH4)2SO4+ (n-2)NH3(n:2–6)(1)In this process, seed crystals are added to the reactor to suppress the precipitation of fine nickel (scaling) and to enhance nickel reduction (Benson & Colvin, 1973; Mackiw, Lin & Kunda, 1957). More specifically, iron sulfate and a small amount of dispersant polymer are added, which leads to the formation of nuclei. Upon subsequent hydrogen reduction, the reduced nickel can then be deposited on the nuclei, allowing nickel particle growth to take place. However, this results in iron contamination in the final nickel product, and so the use of pure nickel as a seed crystal is desirable to produce high quality nickel powders."

As a study to establish a new energy-saving copper recycling process, the copper deposition at a cathode and oxidation of copper(I) at an anode from ammoniacal alkaline solutions containing Cu(I) or Cu(II) were investigated in order to examine the feasibility of electrolysis in this solution.. The current efficiencies were greater than 95% in the current density range of 200 to 1000 A m-2. The current efficiency decreased with the increasing Cu(II) concentration and temperature. In the batch-type electrolysis at the anode, during the initial stage, the current efficiencies were 100%, and the anode potentials ranged from 0 to 0.15V vs. SHE at a current density of 100 A m-2. During the subsequent stage, the current efficiency decreased with time, and the anode potential was around 1.35V vs. SHE where oxygen evolution at the anode surface was observed. As a result, the present electrolytic method can be the core technology in the said copper recycling process.

Yield-pillar-based gate-road designs often fail to provide mine operators with adequate ground control. This is because of the unknowing m is employment of "critically" sized pillars. A "critical” pillar is one that is too large to either yield nonviolently or to yield before the roof and floor sustain permanent damage and is too small to support full abutment loads. To demonstrate the critical pillar concept, afield study of a tapering gate road was conducted by the US Bureau of Mines at the Sunnyside Coal Mines, Sunnyside, UT. Extreme pillar stresses and associated coal bumps characterize the response to first panel mining of a 16.8-m (55.1-ft) wide critical design. Significantly lower pillar stresses, early yielding of the pillar and adjacent panel rib, and an absence of coal bumps suggest that a narrower 12.2-m (40-ft) wide design more closely approaches proper yield pillar dimensions. A probe hole in several 10.6-m (34.8-ft) wide pillars revealed low stress levels and substantial pillar and panel rib yielding prior to abutment onset, indicating a properly functioning yield pillar design.

Analisou-se o tratamento térmico de revenimento de grampos ferroviários, modelo E2039AV, feitos a partir de barras redondas com aproximadamente 20 mm de diâmetro do aço SAE 9254 tendo como objetivo reduzir o tempo do processo de fabricação. A temperatura do forno foi mantida em 490ºC e 18 grampos foram imersos no sal fundido. Em grupos de 3, os grampos foram retirados em intervalos de 10 minutos, tendo o último grupo permanecido no forno por 60 minutos. Após cada retirada foram feitos os ensaios necessários para aferir a qualidade das peças: carga estática, dureza e fadiga. Após apenas 10 minutos de revenimento os grampos já resistiam ao mínimo de 1.000 kgf sem fraturar e apresentaram medidas de dureza próximas ao limite superior de especificação, ou seja, a dureza que era aproximadamente 58 HRC antes do revenido, atingiu valores próximos a 48 HRC. O último teste, fadiga, foi feito apenas nos grupos de grampos revenidos por 30 e 50 minutos. Pôde-se concluir que é possível reduzir o tempo de revenimento do grampo E2039AV feito de aço SAE 9254 de 60 minutos para pelo menos 50 minutos mantendo-se a qualidade dos grampos sem a necessidade de aumentar a temperatura do forno.

J.-I should like to ask if Mr. Bach does not think it rather harmful to let the amen depend entirely on the company, whether it would not be a good plan to let the men aid a little in the support of these organizations? Also whether he has had any experience with utilizing the Y. M. C. A. in this connection. E. E. BACH, Ellsworth, Pa.-That question is always raised whenever there is discussion upon this subject. So far as we are concerned that would not help a bit; our people do not have that feeling, because .we have a company which these men recognize has a corps of very sympathetic officials in every way. I remember the assistant general manager lived out in one of these mining towns for a while. His difficulty was that every man, no matter what, who or where he was, if he had, or thought lie had, a, complaint, had the right of way to his office, and didn't have to stop at all. That is the spirit that predominates all through it. This is also the spirit of the mine foremen, two of whom were trained in our own night school, and it is the spirit of the fire boss and the general spirit of the people. They do not feel that we are trying to feed them with a spoon. As to the Y. M. C. A., we feel that it would be impracticable for us. R H. VAIL, New York, N. Y.-It would be very interesting if Mr. Bach would tell a little more about the control of the dispensing of intoxicants. There are many communities where the state intends to do that but does not succeed very well, and as Mr. Bach has spoken of the speakeasies on the environment of these towns, it would he well to know more about the problem of eliminating those.

O uso de inibidores verdes na corrosão do aço carbono SAE J403 1020 configura-se como uma alternativa econômica e ambientalmente acessível, pois, em relação aos inibidores comerciais geralmente utilizados, são de fácil obtenção, já que são adquiridos a partir de vegetais, portanto, não oferecem risco ao meio ambiente. Assim, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o uso das folhas de aroeira como inibidor de corrosão para o aço carbono SAE J403 1020, o qual é bastante utilizado na indústria e possui baixa resistência à corrosão. A escolha da aroeira se deu devido ao fato de a planta ter origem no Brasil e abundância no Nordeste do País, principalmente no Ceará. Para análise, foram utilizados como meio corrosivo: H2SO4 0,1 M, NaCl 3,5% e NaCl (ph = 4,0); as concentrações do inibidor foram: 50, 200, 500 e 1000 ppm. Em relação aos ensaios eletroquímicos, utilizou-se: Potencial de Circuito Aberto (OCP), Espectroscopia de Impedância Eletroquímica (EIE) e Curvas de Polarização Linear (CP). Dessa forma, por meio da análise das técnicas mencionadas, conseguiu-se obter o comportamento do inibidor em relação ao material e ao meio, bem como avaliar qual o melhor meio para a utilização da aroeira como inibidor verde de corrosão.

The present Bureau of Mines investigation measured low-temperature heat capacities of NiBr2 (8 to 302 K) and NiS04 (9 to 70 K) by adiabatic calorimetry. The standard entropies (S°, 298.15 K) of NiBr2 and NiS04 were calculated as 29.26 ± 0.06 cal/deg mole and 24.21 0.04 cal/deg mole, respectively. (1 cal = 4.1840 joules.) Heat-of-solution measurements of anhydrous NiBr2 were used to determine its enthalpy of formation (?Hf°, 298.15 K) as -50.64 ± 0.31 kcal/mole. High-temperature enthalpies of NiBr2 and NiS04 were measured by drop calorimetry to 1,150 K and 1,002 K, respectively. Enthalpies, heat capacities, and related formation functions are tabulated to 1,200 K.

The Arab Potash Company, APC, is one of the 10 largest potash producers of the world. The solar ponds at the Dead Sea, used for the enrichment of the salt content in the brine, are of crucial importance for the first step in the exploitation of the potassium salt. Targeting at the expansion of production in the since over 50 years utilized facilities, the increase of the brine exploitation capacity, reducing the substantial brine seepage losses from the ponds, becomes a crucially required measure. In this context, the remediation measures on the over 11 km long Dyke 1, being a main dyke of the solar ponds system, became inevitable to reduce the brine losses, prevent further development of sinkholes and cavities and hence assuring the stability of the dyke. The highly aggressive environment, the acting hydraulic conditions and the sensitive stratification and nature of the existing ground represented remarkable challenges for the design, as well as its implementation by the construction activities. Royal Haskoning developed a solution addressing the challenges above and targeting at a high sustainability of the executed structure, especially in view of the various geological and hydrological hazards repeatedly occurring in this Dead Sea region, including sinkholes of several meters by diameter and depth. The construction works, consisting of a cut-off wall, with depths reaching down to 31 m, were awarded to Bauer International FZE, a subsidiary of Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH. Upon the execution of the first section of 4.2 km length, additional sections were subsequently commissioned, also on further dykes, totaling to about 300,000 m² of cut-off wall. The specific project conditions, such as utilization of cutter technique for the excavation in Halite rock, the stability of open trench exposed to hydrostatic pressure of salt-saturated ground water, resulted in unconventional requirements towards the supporting fluid. The extremely aggressive saline conditions –with a Dead Sea water density of 1.25 tons/m3; one of the world's saltiest water–, were further a decisive factor for the definition of the backfill material concept. Despite its clear advantage for construction of cut-off walls with installed sheet piles, the single-phase system with hardening slurries, fulfilling both functions of excavation support and cut-off wall backfill material, had to be abandoned in favor of the two-phase system, to construct a hybrid cut-off wall made of sheet piles and plastic concrete.

Hibi Smelter which is a Copper Smelter lining a blast furnace, produces 2,700 metric tons of anode copper per month. Generally, in a copper refinery, arsenic and antimony are considerably troublesome impurities. With regard to the elimination of antimony, Hibi Smelter has two handicaps described as follows. (1) Smelting under the slightly oxidizing atmosphere in the blast furnace. (2) Recycling the converter slag to the blast furnace after cooling. Therefore antimony and arsenic, mainly antimony, elimination tests, in which the alkaline flux was injected through the two tuyeres in the blowing stage, were carried out in the rotary anode furnace. Antimony and arsenic were respectively removed more than 90 96 from the molten copper, and their high eliminations are discussed by application of the transitory and permanent reaction model with the flux injection, which was presented by T. Lehner.

"Australia’s largest rail freight network operator, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), has selected GE Transportation’s Movement Planner solution as the key technology enabler for its Hunter Valley-focused network control optimization program.ARTC’s Newcastle-based network control, is the nerve center of Hunter Valley rail operations, where locally based train control professionals make thousands of decisions every day to safely support the annual movement of more than 24 kt/h (26,400 stph) of freight, and tens of thousands of coal, freight, grain and passenger trains each year.ARTC plans to transform its train control function by integrating and then building on Movement Planner, an advanced software solution by GE Transportation that provides real-time rail traffic planning and optimization to enable freight to move more efficiently. “The Hunter Valley rail network is one of the busiest and most complex in the country, supporting the largest coal export port in the world,” ARTC managing director and chief executive officer John Fullerton said.“As bulk freight demands grow, rail operators like ARTC and supply chains like the Hunter Valley coal network need to be creative in the way they respond so the Australian economy doesn’t miss out. That’s why we have conducted a worldwide search to find globally proven solutions that will improve our network productivity and efficiency,” Fullerton said.The Movement Planner solution considers multiple factors including train schedules, trafficcontrol systems and train movements relative to each other and then develops an optimized traffic plan for the trains throughout the network. The northernmost portion of the district, including Coolie, Montague, northern Clay, Wichita, Wilbarger, Foard and Hardeman Counties, is underlain by the system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift, which is parallel to and closely related to the Wichita-Amarillo uplift of Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. While the presence of a great majority of the numerous oil fields of the area is traceable to this feature, the production in Archer, southwestern Clay and southeastern Baylor Counties is due to the influence of what is known as the Cisco arch (so called because of its influence on Cisco deposition), the axis of which extends in a northwest-southeast direction across southwestern Wichita County into Archer County. Developments during 1938 Important discoveries in the district were considerably more numerous and of more economic importance than for several years. In addition to a number of small, relatively unimportant discoveries and to the usual local extensions to the various producing fields in the several counties, at least eight fields, most of them apparently of considerable areal extent and importance, were found. The Helmerich and Payne, Incorporated and Blackwell Oil and Gas Company No. 1 Wilson. 4 miles southeast of the town of Holliday, in north central Archer County, encountered a pay of Strawn age at a depth of 3841 to 3858 ft., and was completed for an initial production of 1952 bbl. T'his well opened a new deep pool in the K. M. A. producing zone 8 miles southeast of the K. M. A. production. Subsequently an additional deeper horizon, also of lowcr Strawn age, was discovered by wells that failed to yield commerecial oil from the horizon of the discovery well.
