A Usiminas, como empresa de ponta na produção de aços planos, visando manter e ampliar a sua liderança na produção e comercialização destes produtos, investiu uma elevada soma na modernização de sua linha de produção. Em 2012 foi instalado na Usina de Cubatão, o moderno Laminador de Tiras a Quente e, em agosto de 2013, foi dada a partida operacional da nova linha de Decapagem 03. O objetivo da nova Decapagem 03 é agregar valor em seu portfólio de produtos, complementando assim a nova linha de produtos ofertados com novas dimensões e qualidades. A nova mistura de produtos laminados a quente atende maiores faixas de espessura e largura, além de oferecer tipos de aço não produzidos anteriormente. Este trabalho visa mostrar as principais etapas deste projeto, os benefícios e os resultados preliminares alcançados com a instalação da nova linha de produção. A Decapagem 03, por seu elevado nível tecnológico, é considerada "estado da arte em produção de bobinas decapadas", garantindo assim a obtenção de produtos de grande valor para os clientes, atendendo aos mais rigorosos padrões de qualidade.

"A world-scale surface mining operation is associated with the Syncrude Oils ands Plant. Each day over 300 000tonnes of oils and are mined and transported to the process plant to produce 129 000 barrels of synthetic crude oil.Examples of research and maintenance engineering programs which have resulted in substantial gains in dragline and bucket wheel conveyor system productivities are discussed. Two central themes within these programs, which go beyond the usual technical support associated with a large surface mining operation, are pursued:1. the approach taken to determine the causes of component failures and provide Syncrude performance specifications to allow manufacturing industry to respond with more appropriate products; and2. systems and equipment studies which have led to higher productivity in the major mining equipment and the development of an auxiliary feed system.IntroductionA world-scale open pit mining operation is associated with the Syncrude Oils ands Plant located near Fort McMurray in northern Alberta. Over 300 000 tonnes per day of oils and are mined and transported to the process plant. Fifty million barrel s of synthetic crude oil were produced in 1987, which represents 10010 of Canada's crude oil requirement.following tree clearing and surface drainage, overburden is removed by mobile equipment ahead of oils and mining. Draglines excavate the 40 m depth of feed grad e oils and which is windrowed on the dragline bench. Bucketwheels reclaim the oils and from the windrows for transport by conveyor systems to the extraction plant surge pile.The Syncrude mine is operated in four essentially equal quadrants, each serviced by a dragline and a bucketwheel conveyor system. The mining face in each quadrant is approximately 2 km long and reclaimed oils and is transported by 1830 mm shift able conveyors over distances up to 6 km. Individual conveyors vary in length up to 2500 m.The Syncrude plant started operating in late 1978, and Figure I shows the mine production history through to the end o f 1987. Annual production volumes have increased from 50 million tonnes of oils and in 1979 to 105 million tonnes in 1987.The period from 1982has seen a change in operating philosophy, away from striving for very high production rates, to operating at sustained targetted levels within the measured capacity of the equipment. Higher over-all production volumes have resulted from being able to operate for more hours at these rates. This same period has also seen much greater emphasis placed on routine inspection of the equipment and planned preventive maintenance to avoid problems which could otherwise impact on production."

After an analysis of the hazards of room-and-pillar retreat mining systems, it became apparent that safety could be significantly improved by considerations of (1) human factors, (2) remotely controlled mobile roof supports (MRS=s), (3) mine layout designs, and (4) ground monitoring systems. Initial studies of the effectiveness of MRS=s focused on their interaction with mine strata and evaluations of suitable measurements for detecting roof stability problems during pillar extraction. These studies indicated that overall stress distributions and strata movement were most influenced by the stiffness of coal-measure rocks and the design of mining layouts. Thus, to improve worker safety, mine layouts should be carefully designed and a pillar extraction method chosen for specific geologic and stress conditions. Pillar failure was often associated with an increase in pressure on the hydraulic gauges of the MRS, and roof failure was often preceded by rapid changes in the rate of roof-floor convergence. These studies led to development of a monitoring system that displays loading rate on an MRS in real time. A major MRS manufacturer cooperated in installing and testing the system on an MRS. New field studies focus on evaluating the performance of the system, measuring roof-floor convergence, and optimizing the safety of MRS operations through proper mine layout design.

A rotina operacional e os seus processos de validação e acompanhamento já estão consolidados no ambiente da Tecnologia da Informação (TI). No ambiente da Tecnologia de Automação (TA) estamos avançando lentamente, apesar da grande semelhança em vários processos, devido a dificuldades de adaptação dos controles principalmente no tocante aos tempos de resposta e atuação das equipes. Enquanto a TI atua na garantia da execução do tripé formado por confidencialidade (segurança), integridade (precisão dos dados) e disponibilidade, rigorosamente nessa sequência de prioridades (CID) [1], a TA procura atender às necessidades da produção, e inverte a prioridade para a disponibilidade (DIC). Daí o conflito inicial entre os modelos: demanda imediata ou planejamento detalhado das atividades dentro dos padrões de qualidade da TI, entretanto sem impactar nas metas operacionais. É tudo uma questão de visão e principalmente de gestão por processos! Quais as diretrizes comuns? Quais os processos similares? Encontrar os pontos de afinidade, alinhados com as expectativas dos gestores e com foco na disponibilidade, sem perder a integridade e confiabilidade dos dados é o desafio.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo mostrar a plataforma de integração de dados de inspeção preditiva e sensitiva desenvolvida na ArcelorMittal Tubarão para controle da condição dos ativos, com foco em ganho de produtividade, confiabilidade, e de eficácia das avaliações. O trabalho se constitui no desenvolvimento um sistema informatizado que integre e disponibilize dados em uma plataforma única, a partir de dados migrados dos diversos sistemas específicos já existentes na ArcelorMittal Tubarão, como é o caso do sistema de controle de vibrações, lubrificantes, termografia, grandezas elétricas, além dos dados de inspeção sensitiva. O sistema visa integrar os dados dos ativos das unidades operacionais da ArcelorMittal Tubarão que tenham variáveis de controle, possibilitando a correlação entre estas variáveis de condição e também com as variáveis de processo. A integração dos dados auxilia as equipes de manutenção na detecção imediata e direta das condições operacionais dos ativos, bem como permite avaliar antecipadamente a sua probabilidade de falhas. O sistema também permite construir uma base de dados consistente, que será um pilar importante para desenvolvimento de sistema de auxílio na tomada de decisão.

The separation and recovery of copper from cyanide solution has been investigated since the early 1900s. The precipitation of copper using sulfide ion was patented in 1911 by Williamson, published by Leaver & Woolf of the USBM in 1931 and Cyanamid in 1960s. The current practice of sulfide precipitation is used in various processes such as “SART" for cyanide regeneration and copper recovery. The precipitation of copper sulfide requires the pH of the clear solution to be in the range of 4-6. The precipitated copper sulfide can be sold to smelters. Alternatively, copper cyanide can be precipitated from clear solutions in the pH range of 2-3. However, selling copper cyanide is challenging because of its cyanide content. Past work has focused on the use of boiling sulfuric acid to convert copper cyanide to copper sulfate as published by Seracini in 1991. This paper describes a simple process to convert copper cyanide to copper oxide using sodium hydroxide at ambient temperatures. The cuprite can be sold to smelters or used as a feed to an electrowinning circuit to produce copper cathodes. The process provides an effective method to recover copper from cyanide solutions with a lower capital requirement.

In the present study infrared attenuated total reflection (IR-ATR) was used to monitor the rate of in situ adsorption of heptyl xanthate on a layer of zinc sulfide synthesised on a germanium ATR crystal. The zinc sulfide surface was characterised using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The absorbance of heptyl xanthate measured increased with increasing bulk concentration of the adsorbate up to an equilibrium plateau value corresponding to a fractional coverage of the surface sites of the substrate. For the adsorption from solutions of concentrations between 10-3 and 10-5 M, the rate of adsorption increased with increasing bulk concentration. At higher concentrations the measured absorbance should be corrected for the absorbance due to the concentration of xanthate in bulk solution. The present work provides a discussion of this correction. Assuming the adsorption stage to be rate-controlling and proportional both to the concentration of the adsorbing species in solution and unreacted surface area, a rate law governing this type of transient adsorption kinetics was derived. By means of absorbance data for the concentrations 0.1 and 0.01 mM, the rate constant of adsorption was calculated. From the initial part of a Langmuir adsorption isotherm, the absorbance at monolayer coverage and the equilibrium constant of adsorption could be estimated.

THE complete statistics of zinc-ore production in the United States for 1916 are not yet available. The following figures are, therefore, only approximate. The total production of concentrates for this year, including New Jersey and Tennessee, amounts to 1,280,000 tons. Of this tonnage, five mines produced approximately 536,000 tons, or about 42 per cent. The remaining concentrates came mainly from the "Valley States," Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The 1,280,000 tons of concentrates represent about 25,000,000 tons of crude or run-of-mine ore. Of the five mines producing the 42 per cent., the dimensions of three are approximately 25 by 1,500 by 2,000 ft. (7.6 by 457 by 610, m.) or more. Tour of the five mines are undoubtedly veins in the common acceptance of the term. They are located in great vein systems. The mines of "Valley States" have not, so far, been classed as veins; simply as "secondary deposits." The origin of these secondary deposits has been a warmly debated subject. Many geologists contend that they are the results of leaching from overlying and from adjacent rocks carrying but traces of zinc, these traces leached out and deposited in favorable loci. If this theory is correct, deposition is strictly limited to shallow depths. No volume of ore comparable to that of "true fissure veins" is to be expected. Just what this means to the future of zinc mining in these States is here indicated. The total zinc areas of these States amounts to about 9,124- sq. miles (23,631 sq. km.).- Assuming that 10 per cent. of this total will be more or less productive, there are 912 sq. miles (2,362 sq, km.) of "mineral? ground. The average depth of the operated mines is something like 100 ft. or less. In Bulletin 606, U. S. Geological Survey (1915), p. 202, Siebenthal makes the following statement: "The writer is informed by William Waugh, one of the drillers of the Stone City well, that cuttings from other wells which he drilled in the vicinity of Pittsburgh, Kan., have shown galena and sphalerite taken from a depth of 591 ft. (180.14 m.) and that the showing of ore at some places would be considered good enough to justify the sinking of a shaft had it been found in the Joplin district and at shallower depths." The earliest U. S. patent on a crushing machine was issued in 1830. The device incorporated the drop hammer principle later used in the famous stamp mill, whose history is so intimately linked with that of the golden age of American Mining. Eli Blake invented the first successful mechanical rock-breaker --the Blake jaw crusher--patented in 1858. The idea of his mechanical principle, the powerful-toggle linkage, was so sound that today the Blake -type jaw crusher is the standard by which all jaw crushers are judged. In 1881, Philetus Gates was granted a patent on a machine which included in its design all the essential features of the modern gyra tory crusher. For some years after these pioneer machines were developed, crushing requirements were quite simple. All underground mining and open-pit quarrying was done by hand with tonnages and rock sizes generally small. In the milling of precious metal ores, stamp mills were popular as the final reduction machine. The stamps were fed with an ore size readily produced by one break through small gyratory or jaw crushers. Even in large underground mining operations, there was no demand for large crushers; and increasing tonnage requirements were met by duplicating the small units. The Homestake gold mine in South Dakota was a good example, where in 19 15 twenty -two small Gates gyratory crushers were used to prepare the ore for the batteries of 2,500 stamps. Open pit mines and the introduction of the steam shovel created a demand for larger crushers, which led to the development of a gyratory with an 18 in. (457 mm) receiving opening. Up to this time, the jaw crusher had kept pace with the gyratory, both from the standpoint of receiving opening and capacity; but now the gyratory stepped into a 15-year lead with larger and larger sizes. This trend toward large primary crushers started just before the turn of the century, and in 1910 crushers with 48 in. (1.22 m) receiving openings were being built. About this time, the jaw crusher was revived in a great contribution to primary crushing by the introduction of the 84 in. by 60 in. (2. 13 by 1. 52 m) machine. This crusher was usually followed by a 24 in. (6 10 mm) opening gyratory crusher for secondary breakage, a system which reawakened the industry to the use of the jaw crusher as a primary breaker. Coal-bearing beds underlie 23,000 square miles, about one third of Missouri's total area. Twelve out of more than twenty named coal seams have been or are being commercially mined. The remainder are too thin for commercial production. The coal is high volatile bituminous, with reserves estimated to be six billion tons, 1.24percent of U.S. coal reserves. Coal-bearing strata are generally thin seams which can be up to five feet thick. Typically, mined seams are about 28 inches thick. Coal deposits were first mined in Missouri in the 1840s, with the coal used primarily for domestic heating and blacksmithing. Production increased with the introduction of steamboats on the Mississippi. Coal production in 19 17 was six million tons. Production has steadily declined from a high of nearly seven million tons in 1984 to 2.3 million tons in 1991. Declining production is the result of several factors, including competition from other energy sources and the high sulfur content of Missouri coal. Today, coal-fired electric generating plants are the biggest consumers of Missouri coal. The Missouri regulatory program was conditionally approved November 21,1980, and fully approved January 17,1983. Its Abandoned Mine Land program was approved January 29, 1982.

The objective of this investigation was to compare the results of countercurrent, column cell flotation vs. conventional (mechanical) cell flotation for the cleaning of a sulfur ore (-0.5 mm, 27.43% S) and its discrete size fractions. The tests were carried out using diesel oil as a collector and alcohol as a frother. Generally, column flotation produced concentrates of higher grade. For example, column cell flotation produced a nonwashed concentrate of 65.3% S with a recovery of 84.1%. However, conventional cell flotation produced a rougher concentrate of lower grade (57.0% S) and higher recovery (92.5%). At a superficial-wash water velocity of 0.265 cm/sec, the column product grade increased to 76.4% S, with a slightly lower recovery (80.3%). However, a concentrate with a similar recovery but a lower grade (74% S) than that of the washed product was obtained after three cleaning stages with the conventional cell. The column gave superior results for the flotation of fine and ultrafine particles.

Coal has in general a wide range of density from minus 1.3 to plus 2.0 g/cm3 because of its variations in purity, rank, and porosity, etc. The coal density has great impact on froth flotation performance, but much less attention has been paid to particle density than particle size. Our previous research results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles around 700 nm in diameter can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubble on the flotation performances of different density fractions (minus 1.3, 1.3-1.4, 1.4-1.5, 1.5-1.6, 1.6-1.8, 1.8-2.0, 2.2-2.2, and plus 2.2 g/cm3) of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-liter flotation cells, a specially designed 50-mm-inside-diameter column, and a 152-mm-inside-diameter column. It was found that nanobubble has the biggest impact on the flotation performance of 1.4-1.8 g/cm3 medium-density coal particles.

In Mexico, many tonnes of nickel from waste petrochemical catalysts are dumped every year. In order to recover all that nickel, a hydrometallurgical reactor was designed. This design was performed in a systematical fashion, which included the chemistry of the system under study, both a kinetic and mass transfer study, and finally the use of the RID function, to optimize the reactor size. It was found that the NiO leaching with sulfuric acid is well represented by a first order reaction. The mass transfer results are in good agreement with the experimental results, obtaining over 95% nickel extraction in both cases. A marketing study was also completed that determined that it is possible to make a good profit by processing this residue provided the capital cost was low.

Approximately 6 years ago, Newmont Mining Corporation (Newmont) initiated reclamation/closure at its’ Hollister operation in Nevada. Reclamation/closure challenges existed at three primary areas within the operation. One the open pits had a small, low pH lake. The primary waste rock dump had a collection system for seepage of low pH solution. The heap leach had a typical inventory of process solution. In each of these three areas water quality and water quantity challenges existed. Reclamation/closure techniques were employed that utilized run-on controls, re-sloping, capping/topsoil placement, pit backfilling and vegetation for water quantity control. Water quality controls included installation of passive, anaerobic systems. These mechanisms have effectively limited water volumes that require treatment and effectively treated the water to meet standards.

The Karara iron ore project is a magnetite operation consist of open pit mining and concentrator to produce high-grade magnetite concentrate. The concentrator has adopted three stages of comminution, ie fine crushing in the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), primary ball milling and fine grinding in the TowerMill plus magnetic separation in between these comminution devices. Since 2014, the concentrator has increased the plant feed rate by 18 per cent. Meanwhile, the ore hardness has increased by 13 per cent to a Bond work index value of 15 kWh/t that led to a coarser flotation feed. Karara Mine has decided to shift the comminution workload from the primary ball mill to the TowerMill circuit by bypassing the 100 µm fine screen in between the ball mill and TowerMill circuits. This action has increased the circuit feed particle size distribution with a top size close to 1 mm. The specific energy consumption of the TowerMill circuit was approximately 3.4 kWh/t, and the circuit product sizes (P80) were ranged between 38 and 45 µm. A joint process improvement exercise was carried out to reduce the circuit product size closer to the magnetite liberation size, ie 35 µm. Among the activities were circuit audit, recommendation for improvement, modelling and simulation, multicomponent analysis, implementation of recommendations and quantification of the improvement. One of the key findings was the density effect of multicomponent minerals in the hydrocyclone. The analysis revealed that the low density coarser gangue minerals were bypassed to the hydrocyclone overflow stream that has resulted in a coarser particle size distribution. Meanwhile, more than 20 per cent of fine (-35 µm) high-density magnetite particles were recycled back to the mill through the hydrocyclone underflow stream and increased the circulating load. Based on these outcomes, several recommendations such as conversion to bottom feed configuration, use of smaller grinding media, high operating hydrocyclone pressure and additional grinding power to the TowerMill circuit were made to improve the overall circuit performances. Karara Mine has prioritised to implement those recommendations that have a minimal financial implication. Full-scale plant trials with bottom feed configuration and 17 mm grinding media were conducted to evaluate its performances. These trials have indicated that the grinding efficiency in the TowerMill was enhanced by 10 – 30 per cent. In May 2017, all the five TowerMills were converted to the bottom feed configuration. The conventional method of underground mining involves a process known as drilling and blasting to excavate valuable ore bearing minerals through the load and haul process. Drilling and blasting processes are completed for both the development of the tunnels used to access the orebody and for mining out the orebody itself. The former being called development drilling and blasting, and the latter production drilling and blasting. In either development or production drilling and blasting, the effective recovery will be largely reliant on the extraction of the initial void created in each blast cycle. In development tunnelling, the initial void is commonly known as a Burn Cut. The initial void created in production drilling and blasting has many names such as a Slot, Winze, Rise or Raise. There are drill patterns and charge designs used to create these initial voids in the production cycle. This paper discusses common slot or winze designs for production drilling and blasting; and various critical design criteria for these. The document also aims to provide a process for completing desktop reviews of current patterns employed on-sites and provides an initial guide in a process for improving the recovery of a slot, winze, rise or raise in underground mines.

"The structural and electronic properties of cubic d -NbN are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and all-electron full potential linearized augmented plane wave method (FPLAPW). The equilibrium structural parameters are determined by fitting the total energy as a function of volume to the Murnaghan's equation of state. We calculated the total and partial densities of states (DOS) and compared them with those computed by different authors. Our DOS at Fermi level is found to be very close to the experimental value. The band structure is computed, discussed and used to find the characteristic energy separations. Valence electron density contours are recorded and discussed. We deduced the partial charge densities of different bands and binding energies of valence core levels and compared them with experimental and theoretical results obtained by different authors.IntroductionNiobium nitride has been intensively investigated over the last decades because of its interesting physical properties and technological applications (superconducting microdevices, microelectronic, catalytic probes, and hard coatings) [l]. While the group IV transition metal nitrides (TMN) mainly crystallize in the cubic NaCl structure (Bl type), those of group V and VI nitrides occur as different phases. Thus for niobium nitride, many phases have been reported in the literature: cubic fcc d -NbN, tetragonal ? -Nb4N3, hexagonal d -NbN, hexagonal e -NbN, and low nitrogen content hexagonal ß -Nb2N [l, 2].Structural and electronic properties of niobium nitride were investigated theoretically and experimentally by many authors. For example, in 1975 Schwarz [3] obtained the partial density of states for NbC and NbN from APW band structure calculations. In 1975 Kallne and Pessa [4] studied the electronic structure of Nb, NbC and NbN by using X-ray emission. In 2003 Amriou et al. [5] studied the electronic structure and bonding mechanism of NbC and NbN compounds using first principle total energy calculations using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. Also in 2006 Sanjines et. al [l] studied the electronic structure of the hexagonal~Nb2N, hexagonal' d -NbN, and cubic d -NbN thin fihns by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. They [l] also calculated the densities of states for these phases and used them in the interpretation of the experimental valance band spectra. Most of these studies are old and there is a need for more recent studies. According to our knowledge, there are little comprehensive theoretical studies on this subject by using FP-LAPW method [5], which proved its ability to give accurate results. In this work we used the FP-LAPW method to study the structural and electronic properties of the cubic (fee) o-NbN (space group Fm-3m, prototype NaCl) crystal."

A utilização de coque como combustível em Altos Fornos é necessária, apesar das restrições ambientais e dos custos envolvidos. Para diminuir a quantidade de coque utilizado no processo, são adotadas medidas como a injeção de hidrocarbonetos, dentre os quais, o carvão pulverizado, que é comprovadamente um bom substituinte parcial do coque carregado nos Altos Fornos. A injeção de carvão pulverizado (pulverized coal injection - PCI) propicia um maior retorno econômico, quando utilizado no processo de fabricação do ferro-gusa, pois permite uma maior capacidade da taxa de injeção ao se comparar com o emprego de óleos, gases e outros substituintes. No processo da injeção de carvão, conforme o objetivo do presente trabalho, se faz necessária uma baixa variabilidade (relação da taxa de carvão real com o set point pedido). "On the da y shift in Number One Mine at Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, on May 3, 1887, William Griffiths, a coal miner with many years experience, fired a shot to advance the face of the crosscut. A flame ran out for a distance of fifteen feet along the roof and then extended up the slope for ten to twelve feet, and although many would have called this a blowing out shot, Griffiths said it was just a feeder. ""A blower"", he said, ""would have caused an explosion."" 1There was no explosion. Griffiths reported gas and the area was cleared for three hours and then work resumed. When the shift changed at 3:00 p.m., the fireman reported all places clear of gas and the ventilation good.2The ventilation in Number One Mine was the best anyone had ever seen. The air in the mine was almost too cold. The current was so strong that it sometimes blew out the flame on the miners' fish oil lamps. It delivered five to six hundred cubic feet of air for every man and animal working in the mine. The law required only one hundred cubic feet 3The miners considered Number One to be relatively safe. The manager was proud of the mine and its up-to-date equipment"". Recently, there had been reports from France and America about the explosiveness of coal dust, but the manager did not think his mine was sufficiently dusty to be dangerous.5 The dust lay thick on the floor of the mine. Sometimes when a shot was fired the dust rose in great clouds. When a miner was shovelling it, the dust would billow up and be carried off by the current of air. The dust was also in the roof and in the stopings, put there intentionally to fill up the spaces and prevent the accumulation of methane gas."
