This paper discusses grade control of ore mined at Tennessee Copper Company. Mineral zoning and the influence of mineral zoning on production grade are discussed and illustrated. In order to make this most understandable we will first briefly examine the flow sheet at Tennessee Copper to indicate the path followed by the raw material toward its various products. Then we will discuss some of the characteristics of the ore, specifically the distribution or zoning of the minerals in the ore which cause some of the grade control problems. Finally we Will discuss same of the steps that are taken to combat these problems. The flow sheet is illustrated as plate 1. The mined ore is allied to obtain 3 usable products: Copper concentrate, iron concentrate and zinc concentrate. Copper is found in the mineral chalcopyrite, CuFeS2. The Copper concentrate from the mill contains about 20% copper. These concentrates are smelter in reverberatory furnace and Pierce-Smith converter to blister copper containing 99.2% copper. Some metal is cast into 360 lb. pigs and shipped to the refinery. Some is made into shot copper and used locally to make copper sulfate. Copper sulfate is marketed from Copperhill principally in fungicides.

In Au-Ag alloys the critical resolved shear stress Tc. at room temperature is essentially a parabolic function of atomic concentration:' the 50 at. pct Ag-50 at. pct Au alloy is about 10 times stronger than the pure metals. This strengthening occurs in spite of the similarity in valence and atomic size. Solid-solution strengthening in fcc metals is characteristically greater at low temperatures than at room temperature. In Ag-10 at. pct Au and Au-10 at. pet Ag; r, (20.4K)/Tc (300°K) is 2.3 and 2.5. respectively.- compared to 1.2 in pure silver.3 Suzuki' and Flinn5 explained the alloy strengthening at room temperature as a combination of Suzuki locking and short-range order hardening. The agreement between the computed and measured strengthening was very good: however, in Ag base-A1 alloys Hendrickson and Fine6 concluded that Suzuki locking resulted mainly in a yield drop effect. Recent reviews of the solid-solution strengthening in fcc metals by Fleischer2 and Haasen8, 9attributed the strengthening at room tenl-perature to the combined effect of atom nlisfit and change in shear modulus 011 the long-range stress field surrounding a dislocation. The parameter used by Fleischer was The shear tnoduli of Ag-0 to 6 at. pct Au alloys were measured by Pur-wins. Labusch. and Haasen.In While addition of 4 at. pct Au caused an appreciable increase in the C,, elastic constant. there was a decrease on increasing the solute to 6 at. pct Au: C,, and C :: were not measured in the 6 at. pct alloy. The greater solution hardening at low temperatures implies the presence of short-range interactions between the solute atoms and dislocations These include size and electronegativity effects. Whether the extra alloy strengthening at low temperatures is due to locking or friction hardening is still a controversy."".' In the present research the stress-strain behavior of Au-Ag single crystals containing 1 to 5 at. pct Ag and 1 to 5 at. pct Au was measured vs strain rate and temperature down to 4.2' K. Particular attention was paid to yield drop effects. These have not been previously reported. PROCEDURES The alloys were supplied by the Engelhard Industries. Inc.. as strips 0.050 by 0.250 by 12 in. The compositions are given in Table I. Single crystals were grown under static vacuum using a traveling molten zone technique. "The development and commercial operation of the Falconbridge chlorine leach process have been described in papers in 1985 and 1987. Since this time, various process improvements have been implemented and the capacity of the Kristiansand refinery has been increased to 85 000 t/y Ni, 40 0000 t/y Cu and 4500 t/y Co. The focus has been on continuous improvements in productivity, the use of energy and other costs. Several environmental issues have also been eliminated or reduced since 1987. IntroductionThe first nickel refining operation in Kristiansand, Norway, started in 1910 based upon raw materials from Norwegian mines. In 1929, Falconbridge Nickel mines purchased the refinery to acquire information and the patent rights to the Hybinette refining process that was practised at the small Kristiansand refinery. Falconbridge ownership has now, for more than 70 years, provided a strong base regarding raw material supply, financial resources and technical support for further expansions and major technical improvements at the refinery.The main concepts of the new chlorine leach process were developed in the laboratories from 1966 to 1969 and the process was piloted from 1970 to 1972. The main stages in the commercial plant were started in the 1975 to 1981 period. After 1981, there have been a number of process modifications, plant expansions and improvements to operating practices. The developments up to 1988 have been described in previous publications (Stensholt et al., 1986, 1988).This paper presents an overview of the process and how it is practised at Falconbridge Nikkelverk AS (FNA) today and describes some of the main changes that have been implemented since 1988. During this time, the nickel capacity has been expanded from 54 000 t/y to 85 000 t/y and the cobalt capacity from 2000 t/y to 4500 t/y. The paper describes how these expansions were achieved together with continuous improvements in operating efficiency and also gives an overview of the main environmental concerns at the refinery."

In an effort to maintain an adequate supply of iron to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research on methods for beneficiating the oxidized taconite resources located on the western Mesabi range in Minnesota, thus expanding domestic iron ore reserves. The selective flocculation and cationic flotation process was investigated in a pilot plant using an ore feed rate of 410 kg/hr (900 1b/hr) and 88 percent recycled water. Lime and a cationic flocculant were used to clarify the waste slurries treated in the water reclamation circuit. An oxidized taconite assaying approximately 36 percent Fe yielded concentrates averaging 63.5 percent Fe and 4.3 percent SiO2 and having an average iron recovery of 84.4 percent. The estimated reagent cost per tonne of concentrate was approximately $1.10. In an attempt to recover more of the iron lost in the flotation tailing, wet high-intensity magnetic (WHIM) separation was incorporated in the pilot plant circuit. The flotation concentrate grades obtained from beneficiation circuits with and without WHIM scavenging were similar, but when WHIM separation was used the overall iron recovery was increased by 2 to 9.5 percent, depending on the iron assay of the flotation tailing.

"IntroductionAN EXCELLENT paper entitled Potash Discoveries in Western Canada (l) was presented to the 1948 Annual Meeting of the C.l.M. by L. Heber Cole, of the Department of Mines and Resources, Ottawa. In the intervening three and a half years, the search for oil and gas in Saskatchewan has added considerably to the information available on the occurrence of potash. It is the purpose of this paper to summarize the additional data. For greater clarity, it may be useful, first, to recapitulate some of the highlights of Mr. Cole's paper.Underlying the western plains of Canada there is a large deposit of sodium chloride, believed to be of early Devonian age. Associated with the sodium chloride are certain potash salts, primarily 'sylvinite,' a mechanical mixture of sodium chloride (halite) and potassium chloride (sylvite) crystals. The potash salts, when present, are usually near the top of the salt formation, though in at least one well they were found near the central part of the deposit. Cole reported on some seven wells in Saskatchewan which had encountered appreciable amounts of potash; these were the Ogema, Radville, Davidson Nos. 1 and 2, Prairie Salt Nos. 1 and 2, and Verbata wells. Depth of potash from surface ranged from 7,653 feet in the Radville well to a minimum of 3,466 feet in the Verbata well. Such depths do not compare favourably with those at which the potash is found in mines in the United States, France, and Germany, where about 1,000 feet is the average. The greatest concentration of sylvite encountered was in the Verbata well, where a bed 11 feet thick carried the equivalent of 21.64 per cent K20."

"The main goals in zinc electrowinning process are decreasing of power consumption and increasing of current efficiency. In this study, the electrowinning of zinc in the presence of different additives in electrolyte were established and Arabic Gum, Gelatine, sodium lauryl sulphate and l-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate in the five levels using Taguchi method was examined. In our previous researches, using orthogonal array, effect of zinc electrowinning parameters such as anode type, current density, sulphuric acid concentration, temperature and zinc ion concentration was studied and the optimized conditions for zinc electrowinning was obtained. Anode composition: Pb-Ag 0.5%-Sn2%-Sb1%, current density (A/m2):500, acid concentration (g/1):165, temperature: 60°C, zinc ion concentration (g/1):70. The main goals in zinc electrowinning process are decreasing of power consumption and increasing of current efficiency. ln this research, the effect of four additives: Gum Arabic, Gelatine, sodium lauryl sulphate and an organic material in the four levels with Taguchi method was examined. ln fact the effect of electrolyte environment and determining the best electrolyte under the optimized conditions is the main aim of this study.IntroductionDue to its low cost and abundance, zinc is widely used in the production of brass, galvanized steel, sacrificed anodes and primary and secondary batteries [I]. Some 80% of world primary zinc production is derived via roast-leach-electrowinning processes [2-4]. In the electrowinning process to both improve final product quality and current efficiency the leachate should be purified [5].To produce zinc a current method is to extractit from acidic zinc sulphate solutions by electrolysis with aluminum cathodes and insoluble lead-based anodes [6]. Though the electrolytic processing of zinc has been performed for many years, there are still current efficiency problems in the cathodic process. These low efficiencies (88- 93%) have a serious impact on the costs associated with the energy consumption. On the other hand, these low efficiencies increase energy consumption and decrease the quality of the surface morphology [7- 8]."

Feldspar from Matari, Nigeria was analyzed using SEM, XRD and XRF techniques for microstructural analysis, mineral phase analysis and chemical composition analysis respectively. Qualitative and quantitative XRD analyses revealed the presence of microcline 59.6%, albite 34.7% and quartz 5.71%. The XRF results showed that the feldspar contains 67.32% SiO2, 17.54% Al2O3, 11.33% K2O, 2.75% Na2O, 0.12% CaO, 0.01% MgO, 0.02% MnO2, 0.10% Fe2O3, 0.00% Ti2O, etc and 0.14% LOI. SEM/EDX analysis shows the presence of microcline feldspar as the dominant phase, exhibiting lamellar twinning. The XRD has also revealed that potash has the highest peak, indicating its high concentration. The 0.10% Fe2O3 present is within the permissible level (0.1-0.3%) for glass making and also within the potash feldspar specifications (0.17%). The Matari feldspar is a microcline type, rich in potash, alumina and silica, enabling it meet the standard specifications for alumino-silicate glass.

Willemite is usually found in high-silicon oxide zinc ore and zinc metallurgical secondary resources but without effective extraction method yet. In this study, zinc was extracted from willemite by sodium salt roasting and ammonia-leaching process based on the idea of zinc phase reconstruction. The effects of Na2CO3 dosage, roasting temperature and roasting time on phase transformation and zinc leaching rate were studied, respectively. The results show that Zn2SiO4 was transformed into ZnO or Na2ZnSiO4 during roasting process. After roasting at 800 °C for 2.5 h at ratio of n(Na2CO3)/n(Zn2SiO4) = 2.5:1, willemite was thoroughly transformed into ZnO. The zinc leaching rate of the roasted sample was 97.62% in NH4Cl–NH3–H2O leaching system, which increased by 91.57% compared with zinc leaching rate of 6.05% when willemite was directly leached in NH4Cl–NH3–H2O system.

INTRODUCTION The rock mechanics study of the shortwall mining system at Beth-Elkhorn corporation's Hendrix No. 22 Mine is being conducted under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The objective of the study is to obtain data on surface subsidence over a portion of the mined area, strata subsidence in the mined area, and underground stress changes and displacements in and near natural support elements of the mining system. This study is currently in progress, and only a portion of the results are being presented at this time. The Hendrix No. 22 Mine is located in the moderately rough mountainous terrain of Letcher County in eastern Kentucky. The nearest mine workings to the shortwall area are approximately 1,900 feet distant. The depth of cover over the mined shortwall area varies from 770 feet at Panel 1 to 170 feet at Panel 5 (Figure 1). The strata in the shortwall area is summarized in the three core logs shown in Figure 2. Hole no. 2 is located in approximately the center of the mined shortwall area (Panel 3, Line C, Figure 1). The coal seam in the shortwall area is approximately 4 feet thick and horizontal, although one major ‘roll’ intersects all panels.

The possibility of using an acidic autogenous hydrogen direct reduced iron (H-DRI) slag as a basis for vanadium extraction is investigated. For a raw material to be suitable for producing high-quality FeV, the vanadium oxide content should be sufficiently high and the phosphorus oxide content in a tolerable range. Therefore, the feasibility for vanadium extraction relies on fulfilling two demands: the predominate partitioning of phosphorus to the metal and vanadium to the slag. Correspondingly, the behaviours of phosphorus and vanadium in the Al2O3-SiO2-FeOx-VyOz-P2O5-Fe system were studied experimentally. Slag, 10 g, was put in contact with liquid iron, 30 g, for different durations (2–24 hrs) in closed alumina crucibles at 1873 K. The slag composition was varied between 33.1– 49.3 wt per cent Al2O3, 27.1–46.7 wt per cent SiO2, 16.6–30.1 wt per cent FeOx, and 2.5– 8.8 wt per cent V2O3. The equilibrium phosphorus distribution was 0.42, while the vanadium distribution ranged from 7.6 to 43.4, increasing with the Al2O3- and the FeOx-content.

"Copper and gold - based alloys having giant magnetoresistance properties were produced by melt spinning from arc melted and cast rods. The ribbon width varied between 1 and 2 mm and the ribbon thicknesses were in the range of 30 to 50 11m. The uniform microstructure of the cast rods indicated the composition homogeneity in the starting material. The ribbons showed composition uniformity across the cross section from EDX analysis. However, the spun ribbon microstructure changed from a 'frozen in' region near the wheel side to a nanosize spherically precipitated phase towards the freely frozen surface. The evolution of the microstructure from the spun ribbon state to the annealed ones was studied by optical microscopy, SEM and TEM. The structural information of the spun and annealed specimens was obtained from X - ray, electron diffraction, electron microscopy and ferromagnetic resonance. Magnetoresistance was measured by the four point probe method.IntroductionRecently. Giant Magnetoresistance. GMR. has been observed in sputtered thin films alloys of Ag. Au and Cu with Co and Fe [1. 2. 3]. The sputtered films are produced by condensation of the alloys from the vapor phase. These Ag. Au and Cu alloys are miscible and homogeneous in the vapor and liquid phase (except Ag alloys which exhibit phase separation even in the liquid phase) but immiscible and heterogeneous in the solid phase. In our work we have produced thin ribbons of the Cu and Au alloys about 30 µm thick from the miscible state in liquid phase by rapid solidification melt spinning. The microstructural development of the ribbons was investigated in the as - spun condition and on annealing. The other properties such as magnetization. GMR and Mossbauer Spectroscopy were also investigated in the various microstructural conditions of the ribbons."

"Nanocrystalline CdS thin films were prepared by vacuum evaporation on glass substrates at ambient temperature. The films were characterized by recording and analyzing their transmittance, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and Energy dispersive X-ray (EDAX) spectra. X-ray diffractograms revealed that the material is nanocrystalline with predominant cubic crystal structure and preferential orientation along (1 1 1) plane. SEM micrographs confirmed the nanostructure of the material and showed uniform and well covered surfaces. EDAX reports revealed that the films are cadmium rich and contain oxygen. The first derivative of the absorbance was used to estimate the effective bandgap energies of the nanocrystallites and the hyperbolic band model was used to estimate their radii. The results were compared with those obtained by XRD and SEM measurements.IntroductionCdS thin films are of considerable interest as they can be used in fabrication of solar cells and other opto-electronic devices. In particular, heterojunction solar cells with a narrow band gap base and wide band gap window have been investigated in an attempt to develop efficient, stable and low-cost solar cells [1]. The CdS quantum dot embedded in a glass matrix is one of the well-known quantum dot systems and its electronic and luminescent properties have been studied extensively [2].Three-dimensional confinement of carriers within the quantum dots leads to the blue shift of the optical band-gap and to modification of many properties of semiconductor material [3]. It has been argued that in these semiconductor nanoparticles the hyperbolic band model gives a better fit to the observed quantum size effect as compared to the effective mass approximation [4]."

Pyrometallurgical process are usually used to recover valuable metals from metal sulphide concentrates. However, their use is diminishing as the cost of energy rises and pollution controls become strictes. An alternative method of treatment sulphides could be bacterial leaching due its simplicity and negligible contamination (1-2). This process is presently used commercially to re cover metals such as Cu and U from low grade ore concentrates. In spite of numerous researchs during recent years (3-5) there exists very little kinetic data concerning the speed of bioleaching process. The kinetic analysis of bacterial activity is related with the metabolism and growth of microox ganisms . This fundamental information permits ma- king the best utilization of bacterial oxidation and to suggest techniques which might increase the production of the products desired. However, bio- kinetic models are especially complicated due to the existence of many metabolic routes and parallel reactions which are important for the life of the bacteria. Microbiological oxidation of a mineral substrate is influenced by its own inicial concentration: This influence can be determined by means of a kinetic study. In a medium with sufficient concentration of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) and an adequate supply of 0, and CO2, as the only & L source of carbon for the biochemical synthesis, the substrate concentration would remain the only limitation in the rate of leaching. In this case the Michaelis-Menten model could be applied (6). The model is based on an association of the enzyme (El with the substrate (S) with consequent decomposition of the latter into enzyme and products [ ] The rate of dissolution is defined by the equation : [ ] Were V is the rate of metal extraction (mg 1-1 1 h-1 ) ; S is the pulp density Mn is the maximum rate for metal extraction (mg 1-1 h-1) and K is the constant of Michaelis (concentration of substrate that yields Vm/2). This method is applicable only when the rate of bacterial growth is similar to the rate of metal extraction. It would therefore be sufficient to control the concentration of metal in the medium over the period of time. In the present work a systematic study of the kinetics of ZnS and CuFeS bioleaching in sphalerite and complex ore concengrates was carried out. The rate of dissolution of the Zn and Cu as function of the pulp density and temperature was determined. However, most oxidations of sulphide dissolution take place with a very slow kinetic; but, this can be accelerated considerably by the addition to the solution of suitable catalytic ions, as was Suggested many years ago by Bjorling (7). Such ions can exercise an important influence on the rate of the oxidation-reduction reactions, both homogenous and heterogenous, which take place during the leaching of sulphides; they also affect the nature of the reaction products. The action of catalytic ions has been fully developed in aqueous systems, but in the absence of bacteria (8 - 11) although the actual machanisms is not totally known. The mechanisms proposed as hypotheses in the literature (8) indicate that, in the case of ZnS, the catalyst ion act through an electrochemical mechanism according to the reactions: [ ]

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, devised a direct flotation method for treating low-grade carnallice (KC1.MgC12. 6H20) and sylvinite (a mixture of KC1 and NaC1) ores characterized by a high content of water-insoluble impurities. The procedure consists of (1) flocculation-depression of the insoluble slimes, (2) decomposition leach (carnallite only), (3) potash rougher, cleaner and recleaner flotation, and (4) final product leaching. The technique eliminates the necessity of removing the water-insoluble slimes by mechanical or flotation desliming. Laboratory results demonstrated that the direct flotation procedure, when compared with conventional techniques, yielded equivalent or improved flotation results with equal or less reagent consumptions. The direct flotation method recovered 81.6% of the solid-phase KC1 from carnallite ore and 79.7% of the KC1 from sylvinite ore in final products containing 60.5% and 60.9% K20, respectively. A flowsheet incorporating the described flotation procedure is presented.

The bucketwheel stacker/reclaimer is suited for a variety of bulk material handling systems, especially those operating with stockpiles in excess of 30,000 tons. The bucketwheel stacker/reclaimer, although relatively new in the United States (first introduced here in 1964), has been successfully used in European countries since the early 1940's. Basically the machine is the outgrowth of the bucketwheel earth excavator and the traveling tripper boom type stacker. Since their introduction here they have achieved wide acceptance, especially with coal fired power plants. (Figures 1, 2, and 3.) The stacker reclaimer has been utilized in barge and ship loading/unloading facilities, and in the material handling systems for steel mills, where it has been used to stack and reclaim iron ore at rates up to 6000 tph stacking and 4000 tph reclaiming. They have also been employed at mine mouth power plants for the handling and storing of the plant fuel supply and to help balance the mining rate with the fuel consumption rate.

Upgrading of Indonesia's Bauxite by Washing Method There were eight bauxite samples used in this research, three samples from Kijang contain total SiO2 18.36 - 29.16 per cent, Al2O3 40.12 - 48.36 per cent, Fe2O3 4.27 - 5.13 per cent, one sample from Tayan, contains total SiO2 4.69 per cent, Al2O3 38.95 per cent, and Fe2O3 19.67 per cent, and four samples from Mempawah contain total SiO2 33.5 - 44.8 per cent, Al2O3 29.8 - 35.9 per cent, Fe2O3 7.29 - 9.88 per cent. All of those bauxite ores have not fulfilled the requirement for Bayer process yet; therefore simple up-grading using a rotary drum scrubber is needed. The scrubbing process was carried out with time variable up to 60 minutes with solid percentage applied was 50 per cent and rotary speed was set up 30 rev/min. The bauxite was washed by following steps: scrubbing, screening, drying, and finally it was analysed to show chemical content. The washed bauxite produced has size fraction that is retained on the 1.7 mm of screen opening. The result of the research shows that the higher alumina content of the raw bauxite, the longer washing time is needed moreover the higher quality of the washed bauxite is produced. The highest alumina content of the washed bauxite was 53.67 per cent with the alumina recovery was 89.66 per cent and the concentration ratio of 84.80 per cent was achieved within 20 minutes of washing time of the raw bauxite (Al2O3 48.36 per cent). The washed bauxite resulted from this research is suitable as a raw material for Bayer process.

Biooxidation of a high arsenic-bearing refractory gold ore was investigated to determine the arsenic removal efficiency by the cultured bacteria and to examine the effect of biological pretreatment on subsequent gold cyanidation. The biooxidation pretreatment process utilizes the ability of adapted acidophilic bacteria to oxidize pyrite and arsenopyrite and release the encapsulated gold. The released gold can be efficiently extracted by the subsequent cyanidation process. The biooxidation experiments were conducted with cultured bacteria using various sizes of agitation tanks. Leaching results showed that over 96.26 % arsenic extraction could be obtained from this ore after 6 days of bioleaching with continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Gold extraction during the cyanidation process was increased from 29.35% to 96.71% after biological pretreatment. The content of arsenic in the biooxidation residue was reduced to below 0.3%. The transformation process of As was considered as [AsS]2- ? As (?) ? As (?) during the biological pretreatment.

THE deposits described in this paper occur over much of Wayne County and in the southeast portion of Hardin County, Tennessee, and in the northeast and northwest portions of Mississippi and Alabama respec-tively. The presence of tripoli in this region has been known for some time and descriptions of various occurrences in Tennessee have been made by Jewell1 and Miser2, while Hilgard3, Lowe4 and Logan5 have treated the deposits that occur in the adjacent portions of Alabama and Mississippi, but there has not been a general survey of the entire field summarizing completely the geology of the deposits with respect to their origin and stratigraphic relationships. During 1934, while engaged in surveys of mineral resources through this region for the Tennessee Valley Authority, the writer collected data with this in mind, and has assembled them in this report. This is the first of a series of theoretical papers on the iron-carbon system. A simple critical analysis of the ordinary constitution diagram of the iron-carbon system yields valuable information regarding the nature of the equilibria in the liquid and solid states. It is shown, for example, that the solute in the melt is Fe3C, but in solid Fe (austenite) the solute is carbon. The thermodynamic laws of the depression in the freezing point of solid solutions have been developed and discussed. Using the usual method of plotting the logarithm value of the concentration of the solvent (in this case, the ratio of concentrations of the solvent in the liquid and solid phases) against 1/T, curves are obtained. A rigorous thermodynamic analysis of these curves has been shown to yield considerable information regarding the internal equilibria of the system, with which the phase rule does not deal altogether. In this way, it is shown again that the solute in the melt is Fe3C, but in the solid rFe the solute is carbon. Various heats of reaction (fusion and transition) and other thermal data have been derived: and discussed with a view to correlating the conflicting experimental data obtained by different investigators of the system.
