In 1981, a gas outburst accident occurred in the Yubari Shintanko coal mine, the only expectant mine in Japan, it caused 93 deaths. As a result, Yubari Shintanko closed in 1982. This major disaster was a turning point for sustainability of Yubari City, the largest coalfield in Japan. Finally, Yubari City was bankrupted in 2007. This paper aims to explore how miner’s children experienced this disaster and felt about region, family, and themselves, and to explain the relation between region declining and children’s lives. The data of this paper are the archived 600 essays, written by the junior high school students at the time of the disaster. There are three findings. First, the children who lost their father were the most shocked. They faced profound sadness. But they expressed that they had decided to overcome their sadness with surviving family. Second, the children who didn’t lose their father were also influenced. They were anxious about the future of Yubari, their family, and themselves. Furthermore, they decided to strive for their future. Third, they understood the disaster as a turning point of Yubari declining and looked ahead their future outside of Yubari. In conclusion, this disaster created their hopelessness to Yubari region and, as a result, promoted the decline of the city through their migration to other city. Furthermore, it is important to clarify that Yubari City has to continue the struggle to the regeneration.

For nearly 100 years, the flotation plant metallurgist has often wondered what is happening æbeneath the frothÆ. To assist in unravelling this mystery, new technology has been developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 project, to measure gas dispersion characteristics (such as gas hold-up, superficial gas velocity and bubble size) in industrial flotation cells. These measurements have been conducted in a large number of cells of different types and sizes by researchers from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and JKTech. A large database has been developed and the contents of this database are described in this paper. Typical cell characterisation measurements show a wide spread in values, even in the same cell types and sizes performing similar duties. In conventional flotation cells, the typical gas hold-up values range from 3 - 20 per cent, bubble sizes range between 1 and 2 mm, and superficial gas velocity ranges from 1 to 2.5 cm/s. The ranges of cell characterisation measurements given in this paper will enable plant personnel to compare their operation to other similar types of operations from around Australia and the rest of the world, giving opportunities for further improvement to flotation plant operations.

Although copper production established a new record, lead and zinc registered gains, and iron production held steady, the mixed trend in metallic and nonmetallic mining and generally lower prices in 1961 resulted in a net decline in the total value of domestic mineral production. According to preliminary estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the value of metals produced in this country during the year was approximately $1.9 billion, a decrease of $117 million from 1960; the value of nonmetallics was about $3.7 billion, a $14 million decrease. The following report of mining and mineral developments during 1961 is based on USBM and industry sources. Aluminum Output Dips from 1960 Record Government reports indicate that the domestic primary aluminum industry produced approximately 1,880,000 tons, equivalent to 77% of this nation's capacity. This production is about 6% below the 1960 record output of 2,014,498 tons. Shipments of primary metal ingot slightly exceeded the quantity produced.

In this, the first systematic study of the oxidation of orpiment (As2S3) in sulfuric acid solution under oxygen pressure at temperatures above 170°C, the effects of retention time, temperature, particle size, oxygen partial pressure, the concentration of sulfuric acid and pulp density were evaluated. The effects of cupric and ferric ions on the oxidation rate of As(III) to As(V) were also examined. The products of oxidation are As(III), As(V), SO42- and elemental sulfur. At temperatures ranging from 170 to 230°C, most of the arsenic was found to be in the trivalent state, and oxidation to As(V) with oxygen was very slow. This was confirmed by attempting to oxidize a synthetic arsenious solution. However, the rate of oxidation of As(III) to As(V) is rapid in the presence of ferric ion. Elemental sulfur was found at all temperatures investigated, which can be further oxidized to sulfate at high temperature.

The redevelopment of Bow Bells House in London has thrown up a number of challenges that will increasingly be faced by developers of congested sites. In the context of pile reuse this paper examines four key issues: 1. The Developer?s perspective on sustainability, cost, programme and risk management. 2. The nature of pile testing including timing, the balance of extent of intrusive works whilst retaining the existing piles and identifying representative levels of testing. Four key elements of investigation; geometry, integrity, durability and capacity are evaluated. 3. In terms of design this paper supports the adoption of alternative probabilistic methods aligned with communicating to Clients in terms of acceptable ?probability/risk of failure? in place of a factor of safety approach. 4. The project also highlights a number of issues that will require greater attention to maximise the future reuse potential such as foundation load transfer platforms and promoting developments based on early collaborative framework design and contracting across the supply chain.

"The purpose or this paper is to disclose analytical, statistical, and observational results relating to mineralogy and trace elements in respirable dust samples collected from two different mines in West Virginia. Samples were taken from longwall panels, and the panels operated in different coal seams, one located in the northern part or the state and the other in the southern region. Mining conditions and equipment arrangements on the panels will be described along with dust control techniques used. Results from sample analyses are summarized with emphasis on relationships between mineralogy, trace elements and mineral particle size to worker locations. Correlations are made between micro x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray analyses for sample mineralogy.IntroductionThrough the work of many researchers worldwide, the health of coal miners in modern societies is now protected from harmful exposure to respirable coal mine dust. A vast amount of research culminated in the exposure-response model of Jacobsen, et al, (l) which has been used to establish the 2 mg/m3 exposure limit in the United States. According to the model exposure to respirable dust for 35 years at this level or less could prevent the occurrence of a clinically significant case of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) in a miner. The exposure limit, of course, must be adjusted whenever greather than five percent free silica exists in the respirable dust.The Jacobsen model was built around a mean mass concentration exposure, which generally showed the highest correlation with both incidence and progression of CWP. As Morgan, et al noted, however, the quantity of respirable dust inhaled is not the only significant factor. 2) They noted that although mass of respirable dust correlates highe.st with the incidence of CWP, it is not a causal factor. Admittedly, the insidious processes causing the disease occur at the lund cell-dust particle level."

To assist coal mine operators and regulatory agencies in selecting the most appropriate method to treat coal mine drainage utilizing expert system computer technology. The software package is called the Coal Mine Drainage Treatment PRO. Approach Experts in the field of coal mine drainage treatment were interviewed to determine their methods of assessing mine drainage treatment problems and their rationale for selecting a treatment protocol. These diagnostic, selection, and design criteria were codified in an interactive set of computer programs. Expert systems permit the user to input specific site data and receive treatment advice customized to the user's site and treatment objectives. How It Works The Coal Mine Drainage Treatment PRO package developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) consists of four programs or modules: (1) a control module, (2) a mine drainage treatment tutorial module, (3) a treatment advice module, and (4) a reference module (figure 1). A context-sensitive HELP Facility is also provided.

Ilmenite ore samples obtained from Dankoli in Zamfara, North Western Nigeria has been characterized using Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technique, X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and the Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) technique. The major constituents in the ore were quantitatively found to be TiO2 and Fe2O3 in concentrations of about 60wt% and 31wt% respectively. These occur in the forms of magnesian ilmenite (Fe, Mg)(Ti, Fe)O3, pure ilmenite (FeTiO3), and barium copper yttrium oxide (Ba2Cu3YO6.56) minerals. Other constituents/impurities in minor or trace quantities include MnO, Ta2O5, Nb2O5, Wo, SnO2, Hf, Zn, V, Zr, Co, Pb, Br, Al, Rb, Y, Th and U.

"In order to investigate the fractal feature of coalmine deep rock fragments under impact loads, variable cross-section split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus, 50 mm in diameter, was adopted to conduct impact compressive test for rock specimens from -962m deep coalmine. Various impact pressures, such as 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2MPa, were selected to implement different loading rates. Sieving statistical analyses were conducted for rock fragments after being impacted, and the particle size distribution of broken rock in various loading rates were calculated with the fractal method and then the corresponding fractal dimension was obtained. Test results shows that there is a good self-similarity and fractal feature in fragments distribution of deep coalmine sandstone under impact loads. The fractal dimension of fragments is between 1.9 and 2.7. The research also indicates that there is an approximate power relationship between dynamic compressive strength and fractal dimension, and a strength power relationship between fractal dimension and average strain rate. Moreover, there is a linear relationship between fractal dimension and specimen absorbed energy. The rock fractured process can be quantitatively described through fractal dimension, which can reflect the deep rock broken degree and is an ideal index to evaluate the distribution of rock fragments.INTRODUCTIONBroken rock is one of the most basic processes in mining operations, rock fragmentation has always been an important index to evaluate rock breaking effect (Xu & Yu, 1984). Macroscopic fragmentation of rock material is the final results of continuous development, expansion, gathering and cutthrough of internal micro-cracks. This process, developing from microscopic damage to macroscopic fragmentation, is an energy dissipation process and shows fractal characteristics (Xie, 1993). Turcotte (1986) has conducted statistical analyses of fragmentation for different kinds of geological materials under various broken conditions, and arrived at the conclusion that fragmentation distribution is a fractal."

In the field of mining engineering, design and planning are complex tasks, which require the knowledge of various engineering disciplines. GRUBE (Graphisch-RechnerUnterstiitzter BergwerksEntwurf) is a modular databased program system, which offers computer aid for all mining departments using a 3D CAD software as the user interface. Despite the data quantity and complexity, specific and uniform working conditions have to be applied to the planning of technical equipment of a pit. With the application of 3D graphics, complex data stores and their interrelations become 'palpable' for the user by suitable visualisation. GRUBE-M forms the mechanical operations module of GRUBE, in which underground locations displayed as three-dimensional graphic models are `equipped' interactively. Planning alternatives can be created and compared quickly in terms of technical calculations and economical analysis.

"A solid sulfur is more useful to recover and store than a sulfuric acid as a by-product in the zinc hydrometallurgy. In this experiment a zin concentrate (sphalerite) was leached with ferric sulfate at about 373 K for 3 to 6 hours. Zinc was leached more than 95%. After a solid-liquid separation, the leached residue contained solid sulfur was obtained. The particles in the residue were dispersed by lignin and the solid sulfur of approximately 85% was recovered as float product by a flotation with frother in the pH 4. The dried float product was heated at 413K for 2 hours. The pure solid sulfur was recovered. On the other hand in the leached liquid a zinc oxide was ·added and ferrous .iron was oxidized to ferric iron by blowing oxygen. This ferric iron was returned to the zinc leached process after solid-liquid separation.IntroductionZinc concentrate is usually roasted as pretreatment in zinc hydrometallurgy and the produced S02 is changed to sulfuric acid. However, recently in Japan the utilization of sulfuric acid has been limited and it is more costly to store. Instead of producing sulfutic acid the solid sulfur recovery has been examined by direct leaching of zinc_ concentrate in this experiment.In the direct leaching, several kinds of effects have been studied for leaching of sphalerite in ferric sulfate solution. The addition of lignine siilfonate1 • 2) and fine· grinding3) increases the · speed arid leaching fraction of sphalerite. The leaching ratio depends on impurities in sphalerite ores4 • 5). Here, the zinc concentrate is leached ferric sulfate solution under atmospheric pressure at 373K. The solid sulfur in leached residue is separated as float products from other solids by sink-float separation and flotation. The sulfur in float products is purified by evaporation at 413K and recovered."

W. E. Horst—In regard to the flotation rate being described as "first orcler" for flotation of quartz particles below 65 p in size (or any size studied in this work) in this paper, it appears that the authors' conception of rate equations is not in agreement with cited references. A first order rate equation has as one of its forms the following: a In.=a/a-x=kt where a = initial concentration, a—x = concentration at time t, t = time, and k = constant. The constant, k, has the dimension of reciprocal time which is similar to the specific flotation rate, Q. described by Eq. 2 in the authors' article, as has been previously discussed by Schumann (Ref. 1 of original article). The plotted data presented in Fig. 4 of the article utilizes the specific flotation rate, Q (min.'); however, there is not adequate data given to indicate the order of the rate equation which describes the flotation behavior of the quartz system studied. Results from the experimental work indicate that the relationship between rate of flotation (grams per minute) and cell concentration (provided the percent solids in the flotation cell is less than 5.2 pct and the particle size is less than 65 p) is described by an equation of the first order (R, = k c+", n being equal to 1 in this size range) and the use of the first order rate equation does not apply. Similarly the relationship for other particle size ranges studied is expressed by equations of the second or third order depending on the magnitude of n. T. M. Morris—The authors are to be commended for the experiments which they performed. As they state in their discussion the concentration of collector ion In solution did change with change in concentration of solids in the flotation cell. Since for a given slze of particle, flotation rate increases with concentration of collector until a maximum is reached, the effect of concentration of particles in their experiments was to vary the concentration of collector ions. A collector concentration which insures maximum supporting angle for all particles eliminates the unequal effect of collector concentration on various sized particles and the effect of size of particles and concentration of particles upon flotation rate could be more clearly assessed. I believe that if the authors had increased the concentration of collector to an amount sufficient to attain a maximum supporting angle for all particles they would find that the specific flotation rate of particles coarser than 65 p would be constant with change in the concentration of solids in the flotation cell, and that a first order rate would apply to the + 65 as well as to the —65 p sizes. It might also be discovered when this change in collector concentration was made that the maximum specific rate constant would be shifted toward a coarser fraction than when starvation quantities of collector are used since this practice favors the fine particles and penalizes the coarse particles. P. L. de Bruyn and H. J. Modi (authors' reply)—The authors wish to thank Professor Morris for his kind remarks and for mentioning the influence of equilibrium collector concentration on flotation rate. With a collector concentration sufficient to insure maximum supporting angle for all particles, a first order rate equation may indeed be found to be generally applicable irrespective of size. Such a concentration would, however, lead to 100 pct recovery of the fine particles and consequently defeat the essential objective of the investigation to derive the maximum information on flotation kinetics. To establish absolutely the validity of any single rate equation for a given size range, the ideal method would be to work with a feed consisting solely of particles of that size range. Use of such a closely sized feed would also eliminate the possibility of the interfering effect of different sizes upon one another. The authors do not believe that increasing the collector concentration would shift the maximum specific flotation rate (Q) towards a coarser fraction. Experimentation showed Q to be independent of solids concentration for all particles up to 65 µ in size, whereas the maximum value of Q was obtained in the range 37 to 10 p. Professor Morris contends that the addition of starvation quantities of collector favors fine particles at the expense of coarse particles, but the reason for this is not entirely clear to the authors. The comments by Mr. W. E. Horst are concerned only with the concept of the term "first order rate equation." According to the usage of this term in chemical kinetics, time is an important variable, as is shown in the equation quoted by Mr. Horst. All the experimental results reported by the authors were obtained under steady state continuous operations when the rate of flotation is independent of time. To be consistent with the common usage of the "first order rate equation," it would be more satisfactory to state that under certain conditions the experimental results show that the relation between flotation rate and pulp density is an equation of the first order.

The use of SO2/air gas mixtures as an oxidant to precipitate Mn from Co(II) leach liquors was investigated. The effects of SO2/air ratio, pH and temperature on Mn precipitation were evaluated. It was found that the use of SO2/air gas mixtures resulted in significantly higher Mn precipitation kinetics compared to using air or pure O2 alone. The SO2/air ratio was varied from 0% to 6% SO2(v/v) in air and similar Mn removals were achieved at 0.75% to 3% SO2 at pH 3. The solution pH was varied from pH 2 to pH 4; Mn precipitation did not increase considerably from pH 2 to pH 3, but increased significantly at pH values higher than pH 3. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased as pH increased, with 1% Co co-precipitation at pH 3. An increase in temperature from 30°C to 60°C also increased Mn precipitation and 100% Mn precipitated at 50°C. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased significantly with an increase in temperature. An activation energy of 25 kJ/mol was calculated from the Arrhenius plot, which is an indication that the precipitation reactions were both chemically and diffusion controlled. XRD analysis showed that Mn precipitated in the form of Mn2O3 instead of MnO2 that was predicted from thermodynamic data. SEM and XRD analysis also revealed that the precipitate consisted mainly of gypsum or bassanite (99%), with the Mn containing phase (< 1%) distributed within the gypsum phase. The US Bureau of Mines compared column flotation using either fine or coarse bubbles with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a &.7% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrate with 87% recovery, compared with 43.8% and 43.5% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrates with 85% and 77% recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse- and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5% Cr2O3 with 95% recovery, exceeding conventional flotation, which produced 35.6% Cr2O3 -grade concentrates with 87% recovery.

As that paper was not published, the present authors have availed them-selves of Mr. Morrow&apos;s kind permission to use information given therein. Similar figures for the latest years available have been added to many statistics originally presented. It is unfortunate that Mr. Jordan&apos;s death removes his stimulating guidance and help, which the authors would have welcomed and have found invaluable in the past. One interested in the Pittsburgh seam should not fail to read the exhaustive and authoritative paper by Eavenson2 presented in 1938. As Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties contain practically all the reserves and furnish nearly all of the production from the Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania at the present time, this area only is intended when reference is made to the Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania. On much of the seam in Greene and Washington Counties, which contain a large proportion of the total reserves, insufficient data are available to determine the detailed characteristics of the seam with any degree of finality. It is hoped that the data presented here will fairly well indicate the probable characteristics. Economic Importance of the Pittsburgh Seam The Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania is of primary importance as a coal resource, not only because of its substantial reserves but because it contributes such a large proportion of the coal used in the country and an even larger proportion of that used in the manufacture of coke. Mr. Ashley3 placed the estimated recoverable reserves (1935) of the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania at 7,500,000,000 tons.* Although a considerable portion of this tonnage is not now suitable for coking coal, because of its high sulphur content, undoubtedly the supply of coking coal will last for many years and that not suitable for coking will furnish industry with an ample supply of energy. In attempting to assess the contribution of the Pittsburgh seam to total coal production and to that of coal used in making coke, one finds that the statistics published annually by the U. S. The extraction equilibrium study of tetravalent platinum was carried out using tri-octyl/decyl amine (Alamine 336) and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) monothiophosphinic acid (Cyanex 302) in kerosene from hydrochloric acid media to investigate their extraction capacity, since they have different donor atoms, ?N? and ?S?. Their distribution equlibria were studied as a function of acid, extractant, diluents and temperature. The title metal shows the inverse behavior at higher acid concentrations. Extraction of tetravalent platinum increases with increase of extractant concentration. The plot of log D vs. log [Extractant], mol.L-1 is linear with slopes 1±0.3, indicating the association of one mole of extractant with the extracted metal species. Stripping of metal from the loaded organic (LO) with mineral acids and bases such as hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric acids and ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, thio- urea were studied. The nitrate content is an important factor for environmental water samples and flour. In a 0.35 mol/L H2SO4-2NO solution, has a strong catalyzing function on the decolourization of Gallocya-nine (GC) oxidated by NaBrO3. Based on this, a novel method was developed to measure the NO and -3NO concentrations in water and flour. The flow injection technology was introduced into the analysis system. A single-valve dual- cingulums to inject which the Copperized-Cadmium slice and the reduction zone are isolated. The optimum solution for this method contains 1.48×10-4 mol/L GC, 0.06 mol /L NaBrO3 and 0.2 mol /L of NH4-2NOCl. Two empirical equations were proposed to calculate the and -3NO concentrations based on the measured signals. It can be used to measure -2NO of from 0.001 mg / L to 2.0 mg/L and -3NO of from 0.002 mg / L to 2.5 mg/L. The measurement frequency can be up to 20 samples / h. The relative standard deviation for eleven samples is less than 5%.
