"This paper concentrates on the four recent plant trials/ applications of froth washing. Results showed that improved metallurgical performance can be achieved with wash water. Increased froth cleaning yielded better upgrading, and some cases slightly improved recovery. Froth sampling and salt tracer tests supported the findings of froth washing tests.At Falconbridge, Ni grade increased from l.47% to 2.15% and recovery from 85% to 87%. At Eastmaque, final Au grade increased from 2.3 to 2.7 oz/st at a slightly higher recovery. At Les Mines Selbaie, Cu grade increased from 24.5% to 25.S% and Zn grade from 54.5% to 56.l%. At Zinc Corp. of America, average Zn grade increased from 55% to 56. 8% at the same recovery for a 45-day period. A number of plants in Canada and the United States have evaluated and/or now practicing froth washing. Wash water has now proved itself in some plants over several months of operation.INTRODUCTIONFroth washing in mechanical flotation cells offers a number of metallurgical (i. e. increased grades and/or recoveries) and economical (i.e. decreased transportation and smelting & refining costs) benefits. Fundamental development work in laboratory and pilot scales performed at McGill yielded encouraging results. (Kaya and Laplante, 1988a and 1989a). Since laboratory and pilot flotation performance can differ from full-scale due to differences in hydrodynamics, kinetics, and froth characteristics (e.g. stability, loading etc.), plant trials were essential to prove the viability of this technology."

"The construction of the new Scissors Creek shaft at the Rocanville mine, the first potash shaft successfully completed in Saskatchewan Canada since 1979, is summarized here. Located 15km from the existing Rocanville surface plant, this new 6 m inside-diameter, 1121 m deep service shaft was built for fresh-air ventilation and access. Shaft construction in the Saskatchewan sedimentary basin involves sinking through five different rock-types: glacial tills, shales, sandstones, carbonates and salts. The first four rock- types are all water-bearing, and the salts will dissolve in water. This results in five different sinking challenges and requires five different shaft lining designs. The upper 580 m of rock (the till – shale – sands sequence) was frozen before sinking, and grouting methods were used for water control through deeper carbonate levels. Challenges that were faced and overcome during shaft sinking are reviewed, and ideas that future operators working in sedimentary basin environments might consider in order to avoid these difficulties are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Nutrien Inc. (formerly Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. / PotashCorp) Rocanville potash mine in southeast Saskatchewan, Canada has been in continuous production since 1971. Devonian potash, formed approximately 380 Mybp, is mined in a sedimentary basin environment at approximately 1000 m depth below surface in this area of Saskatchewan. The predominant use for finished potash products is fertilizer: potash fertilizer is concentrated and nearly pure KCl (i.e. greater than 95% pure KCl). Currently 10 potash mines are in operation in Canada, all in Saskatchewan. In 2018 Saskatchewan mines produced ˜ 23 million tonnes of finished potash products, which is approximately 35% of World demand of ˜ 66 million tonnes for the year (e.g. Nutrien Inc., 2019).In November, 2007 it was announced that the Rocanville potash mine would be expanded to increase production from 3.0 Million tonnes per year (Mtpy) to approximately 6.0 Mtpy of finished potash products, requiring an increase in hoisting capability from approximately 9.0 Mtpy to over 18.0 Mtpy. The Rocanville potash mine has historically been accessed through two shafts: a production and ventilation exhaust shaft, and a service and ventilation fresh-air shaft located approximately 200 m from each other. All surface offices, processing facilities, etc. are situated near these original shafts.A very important part of the recent Rocanville expansion involved the construction of a new service shaft (6 m diameter, 1121 m deep) for fresh-air ventilation and access, approximately 15km west of the existing surface plant. Once this third shaft was completed in 2015, the historical service shaft was converted to a second exhaust and production shaft. Three shafts are now available for mine access, ventilation and ore hoisting at Rocanville. As of December 31, 2017, annual nameplate capacity for Rocanville was 6.5 million"

Abstract. The shaft was drilled on U.S. Government land in the Piceance Creek Basin and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. It was drilled to 723 meters (2 371') to provide access to rich deposits of oil shale, nahcolite and dawsonite for geotechnical test work and environmental mining research. Rotary drilling and dual string, reverse-air, jet-assist circulation methods were used. Drilling required 8 months. Site preparation, running and cementing the casing required another 4 months. A 2.44-meter (96-inch) ID steel welded casing, 5.1 cm (2 inches) thick was installed and 2 700 tonnes (63 000 sacks) of cement were slurried and pumped into the annulus.

Measurements made with starch ~~~~s indicate that the Presence of starch serves to depress the streaming potential of a clay mud system. Measurements with pure starch slurries show that the addition of NaCl or CaO reduces the streaming potential significantly. The addition of NaOH, however, causes only a minor reduction in potential even when there are large changes in mud resistivity. INTRODUCTION In their excellent study of the streaming potential, Hill and Anderson' proposed that the presence of conductive solids within the filter medium will reduce the generated potential. This theory was demonstrated with measurements on shaly sandstone cores having various "b" factors; the cores with the higher negative b factors showed markedly lower potentials. (The factor b was originally defined by Hill and Milburn2 in an expression relating the resistivity of a shaly sandstone to the resistivity of the interstitial water: log F, = log F,, + b (log 100R,)'. 'he factor b, therefore, is a measure of the contribution of the conductive solids to the total conductivity of the sample. It has been found experimentally to be directly related to the amount of chemically exchangeable ion per unit pore volume.) In the logical extension of this hypothesis to the streaming potential created by filtration through mud cakes, they suggested that the presence of nonconductive starch in a drilling mud would have the opposite effect; i.e., it would cause the streaming POtential to be increased. The high streaming potentials that they observed with lime muds were attributed to this cause. A cross-plot of some of their results which are relevant to this discussion is given in Fig. 1. The lime-mud curves and untreated-mud curve are taken from curves given in their paper. The gyp-mud line was estimated from their statement that the measured streaming potential for gyp muds in the range of 1.5 to 2.0 ohm-m was approximately 18 mv/1,000 psi. These gyp-mud potentials were the lowest that they reported for any of the bentonitic-clay muds, and were the only ones which were less than the untreated-mud potentials. This very low streaming potential of gyp muds has also been observed in field studies.' By way of comparison, a U. of Texas publication4 gives the approxi-ate compositions for lime and gyp muds shown in Table 1. These materials are added to a bentonitic-clay mud base. It can be seen that both of these muds contain significant amounts of calcium salts and that the gyp mud has the higher concentration of starch. It would appear from this and from the data shown in Fig. 1 that starch may well be the cause of a streaming-potential reduction, rather than a potential increase. EXPERIMENTAL A series of streaming-potential experiments has been performed using a cell of a design similar to that reported by Wyllie.5 Calomel electrodes were used in both the mud slurry and the filtrate. Pressure in the cell was generated with high-pressure nitrogen. The primary objective of the investigation was to determine the effect of starch on the potential. Five different slurries were made which ranged in composition from untreated ben-tonitic mud (Baroid Aquagel) to a pure starch suspension (Baroid Im-permex). The intermediate slurries were prepared by mixing together a 9-lb/bbl clay mud with a 12-lb/bbl starch suspension in the ratios 1:3, 1:1 and 3:1. When starch was used alone, it was necessary to use an 18-Ib/bbl mixture, since leaner mixtures would not form a suitable filter cake. The clay mud used in the experiments was aged for three months before use. In addition to this series of measurements on the starch-clay mud mixtures, other experiments were performed to determine the effect on the potential of the absolute starch and Aquagel concentration, and the effect of adding various chemicals. In October 1993, the first two of a series of full scale passive biological treatment cells were constructed to treat mine drainage from the Burleigh Mine (located approximately 48 km west of Denver, Colorado in the Clear Creek/Central City Superfund Site). The two cells are each 19-21 m long, 10.7 m wide and 1.2 m deep. Each cell contains approximately 216 cubic meters of substrate (composted manure) and is designed to treat 60 L/min of mine flow. One cell is designed as an upflow reactor and the other cell is designed as a downflow reactor. The differences in flow hydraulics and treatment efficiencies will be tested in these two cell for approximately nine months before the remaining cells are built to treat all the discharge. The substrate material was selected based on a series of bench scale tests. During the tests, the amount of metals removed was determined. The design flow rate was based on a sulfide generation rate of 400 nanomoles of sulfide generated per cubic centimeter of substrate per day. Metal removal results for the first three months of operation of the two cells will be presented and compared to results of bench and pilot studies at other sites.

Catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPFs) are used for reducing diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations in underground mines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on how catalyzed diesel particulate filters perform. Two CDPFs, with two different catalysts, are used on vehicles in two mines. The CDPFs are periodically removed from service and evaluated in the laboratory to determine their DPM collection efficiency, regeneration temperature, and effects on gaseous hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. This report summarizes the results of the laboratory evaluation, and the mines' experience with the CDPFs. Both CDPFs have operated over 2,000 h. One was evaluated after 1,646 h; its collection efficiency at one operating condition was 87.3 pct. After 2,135 h of operation it was removed from service because it was damaged. The second CDPF continues to be used after 2,328 h of service. The laboratory evaluation indicated its collection efficiency decreased after 1,584 h of use and its regeneration temperature increased from 405' C to 420' C. The mines' experiences with the two CDPFs varied. While being used on mine vehicles, both CDPFs became plugged with DPM on a number of occasions because of insufficient regeneration. CDPFs are capable of lowering DPM concentrations in diesel exhaust. They can also lower emissions of CO and HC, depending on the type of catalyst used. In this study, the performance of the CDPFs changed with use. Recommendations are given in this report for proper use of CDPFs in mines.

"INTRODUCTION Mining activities must be safe and profitable. These two requirements influence each other. The purchase and implementation of safety improvements costs money. Injuries and illnesses at mines stop or delay production and may result in additional costs or a loss of profit. Other effects of injuries and illnesses include the negative influence on employee morale, corporate reputation and conflicts with contract partners. Based on this researchers asked the question: are mines with lower rates of injuries and illnesses more profitable than mines with a higher frequencies? One aspect of this research is the evaluation of the safety situation and the measurement of benefits of safety improvements in the German mining industry. In the following paper, this part of the research will be examined. The main aim is the evaluation of injury rates in different German mining sectors and regions in Germany. SELECTION OF GERMAN MINING OPERATIONS The research team decided to focus the study on the salt and potash and the aggregate and industrial minerals mining industries in Germany. These two mining industries are different in the number and size of operators, structure of the industry, pricing and markets. The selection of two different industries adds to the clarity of the evaluation. Salt and potash mining industry The German salt and potash industry is primarily located central Germany. All salt and potash mines in Germany are underground operations. In 2015, the German potash industry employed 8,100 employees and generated a total revenue of 2 billion Euros. German potash reserves include magnesium compounds like kieserite (MgSO4·H2O), in addition to sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgCl3·6(H2O)). The German salt industry employed 2,300 people in 2015 and generated revenue of 800 million Euros (Krueger, 2015) There are seven mining companies with salt and potash operations: esco-european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, K + S Kali GmbH, Saline Luisenhall GmbH, GSES Glückauf Sondershausen Entwicklungs- und Sicherungs-gesellschaft GmbH, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG, Wacker Chemie AG and Südsalz GmbH. In this way, esco – european salt company GmbH & Co. KG is an affiliated company. Esco was founded as a joint venture of K + S and Solvay in 2002, since 2004 K + S is the sole holder (esco - european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, 2016). Likewise, the Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG has a controlling interest in Südsalz GmbH (Südsalz GmbH, 2016). Aggregate and industrial minerals mining industry The aggregate mining industry in Germany is comprised of many small mining operations and relevant companies. According to the German Department of Economics (BMWi, 2015), the following industrial materials are classified as aggregates: fluorite, barite, kaolin, quartz and quartz sand, quartzite, silica, loamy and foundry sand, pegmatite sand, shale, clay, bentonite, schistose, limestone and dolomite, gypsum and anhydrite, basaltic lava and lava sand, gravel and split, pebble and silicic sand and peat."

Monazite has had a Cinderella-like history. Although nearly go per cent pure rare-earth compound (rare-earth phosphate) it was sought at first not for the rare earths but for the sake of a minor constituent—thorium. The thorium, essential for the Welsbach gaslight mantle, was present in only small quantities and the principal constituents, the rare earths, were largely discarded. Gradually, however, the rare earths have developed uses of their own and today have left the thorium far behind in value. Occurrence Monazite was first produced commercially about 1886, in North Carolina, where it was collected in small sluices by farmers who found it in stream beds on their land. The deposits were later exploited on a larger scale, but were mostly abandoned in a few years, when monazite from Brazil came upon the market in far larger quantities. Domestic production ceased entirely in 1906. The Brazilian source is still active, together with Indian, Dutch East Indies, and Australian deposits. Several other localities in the United States have yielded monazite, but none of these has produced commercially as yet. Monazite occurs originally in pegmatite~ and gneisses, through which, unfortunately, it is scattered in highly dispersed form. All commercially useful deposits consist of transported monazite sands liberated by erosion and concentrated by the action of water, which has sluiced away lighter materials and concentrated the heavy (D = 5.0 to 5.2) grains of monazite, together with ilmenite, zircon, garnet, and other dense minerals. The Carolina deposits were in stream beds; most of the other deposits mentioned are on or near the seashore, where the action of the waves has served to concentrate the monazite. In most cases today, the sands are worked to obtain the ilmenite and zircon, as well as monazite. The minerals are separated by means of sluices, dry tables, and magnetic separators, and each is finally obtained nearly pure. No crushing or grinding is necessary. The concentrates are shipped in fiber bags. A model for the low-temperature peak, LTP, in fcc metals is presented. In high stacking fault energy metals, e.g., aluminum and nickel, it is proposed that a reversible dislocation glide and climb process might give rise to the observed high relaxation strengths and activation energies equivalent to volume self-diffusion values. In low stacking fault energy metals such as copper, gold, and silver, dislocation climb is energetically unfavorable at T < 0.5 Tm and the relaxation process is therefore mainly one of reversible glide. This model is used to explain the effect of a change in grain size and impurities on the LTP. THE low-temperature grain boundary damping peak, LTP, in spectroscopically pure aluminum,&apos; copper,17&apos; gold,2 nickel,3 and silver4 has recently been the subject of a detailed investigation by our laboratory. The main results are summarized in Table I. An empirical relationship was found between the peak relaxation strength, AE, and the width of the dissociated dislocation, do,* given by: do = µa2/24p? (Ref. 5) [I] where p is the shear modulus, y is the stacking fault energy,6-8 and a is the lattice parameter, Table 11. 4E is plotted against do in Fig. 1. Two regions are apparent: region (a)! which contains all but one of the metals, where AE decreases linearly with increasing do, i.e,, AE 1/do; and region (b), where ?E is approximately independent of do. A similar trend is observed when the ratio Qp/QL is plotted as a function of do, Fig. 2. (Qp and Ql are the activation energies for the peak and for lattice diffusion, respectively). In the past, when Qp and QL were found to be comparable, the relaxation peak was explained in terms of grain boundary sliding.10 The equivalence of Q, and Qb. the activation energy for grain boundary diffusion, prompted the suggestion that it was a consequence of reversible grain boundary migration on an atomic scale." A new model for the LTP, which is based on the experimental relationships in Figs. 1 and 2, is presented. In region (a) it is suggested that stress relaxation occurs through the reversible glide and climb of grain boundary dislocations; in region (b) only reversible glide can take place. The resultant effect on the grain boundary might be sliding or "a bowing out", but, since the total distance moved will be 50A, the atomic movements are considered of primary im- portance. It must be emphasized that this is only a qualitative model, but at the moment it appears the most likely way to explain the widely varying, but re-

Under the designations "industrial talc" and "soapstone" are included earth materials of widely different chemical and mineral compositions. Talc, the mineral, is a hydrous magnesium silicate, with a suggested theoretical formula H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or H2O.3MgO.4SiO2, which postulates 63.5 pct SiO2, 31.7 pct MgO, and 4.8 pct H20.18 Single grains or leaves of talc, however, seem to have variations in water content that range from 3.5 pct to more than 7 pct, as well as slight differences in the proportions of MgO and Si02.20 Most of the industrial talcs produced in the United States do not approach the composition given above (see Table 1), but are essen- [ ]

THE responsibility resting upon the owners and managers of mines where fire-damp is generated, renders it a matter of imperative duty that a full and correct statement of any explosion that occurs should be given to the public. But such a statement must be based on the testimony of impartial eye-witnesses or trained experts. Then a sad experience may result in the adoption of effective preventive measures. In the absence of any official and professional body of mining experts in the State of Virginia, the writer desires to submit to his professional brethren of the American Institute of Mining Engineers an account of an explosion which recently took place in a colliery under his management, and earnestly desires a thorough and impartial discussion on the facts submitted. Description and Plan of the Mine.-The "Grove" shaft is situated at the nearest point 825 feet from the last old workings upon the Midlothian property, south of the old Pump shaft works. (See Plate III.) The shaft was sunk by the former company, some thirty years ago, to the depth of 622 feet. An incline over 230 feet long, starting in a northwest direction at a depth of 105 feet above the shaft bottom, had been driven to explore the coal on the dip. A return of very small dimensions had been driven round the shaft on the south side, entering the upcast chamber. With the information obtained from the former company that a seam of coal about four feet thick, at a depth of 490 feet, had been found, and with the information obtained by the present proprietor, R. T. Burrows, of Albion, N. Y., by means of two boreholes on the dip west of the old shaft, in both of which workable seams of coal at various depths had been ascertained, the clearing out and thorough retimbering of this shaft were commenced in March, 1873. Borehole No. 1, at a depth of 477 1/2 feet from surface, revealed a seam of coal. This borehole was afterwards carried to a depth of 1140 feet to the granite, without finding any other seam of coal. Borehole No. 3, at a depth of 608 feet, revealed the first coal-seam, 142 feet thick; at 633 feet, the second, 12 feet thick; at 662 feet the third, 1 foot thick, and at 692 feet the fourth, 4 1/2 to 5 feet thick. The borehole was stopped at a depth of 715 1/2 feet.

In the Grasberg Mine, a series of orepasses of diameter 2 to 4m are being constructed, each one to carry as much as 10,000 tlhour of copper- and gold-bearing ore through single stage vertical drops of over 500m. At the base of each orepass, the fragmented rock falls into an orebin of diameter 1 Om and 100m deep. Long before the planned tonnages were reached on the early orepasses, a problem arose that was both serious and intriguing. Pressurization of air in the orebins caused by the falling rock reached such levels that when the feed to the top of an orpass was interrupted, a massive surge of air ascended rapidly and produced a dangerous backblast accompanied by dust; grit and rock fragments from the top of the orepass. Backblasts lasted for about one minute and were not only hazardous to the health and safety of personnel but also required time-consuming clean-up operations. The paper describes the aerodynamic analyses that were con- ducted in order to understand fully the mechanisms involved in the phenomenum, and the development of a procedure that al- lows the effects of falling material to be incorporated into existing ventilation network software.

Global practice in copper solvent extraction is reviewed, based on individual plant operating data for 2018. The survey respondents account for almost 40% of global copper cathode production by solvent extraction and electrowinning. Regional trends in operating conditions, as related to the prevailing ore mineralogy, leaching processes, and life of mine are evaluated. The adoption and expansion of this technology in the African Copperbelt and Asia are assessed, together with the associated challenges of specific orebody characteristics. Trends in feed and electrolyte compositions and flow rates, and extractant and diluent selection, together with their impact on copper recovery are reviewed. The evolution of equipment design and associated ancillary processes are discussed, and new projects identified. INTRODUCTION Continuing from similar surveys carried out in 1997, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2013 (Robinson, Davenport, & Jenkins, 1997; Jenkins, Davenport, Kennedy, & Robinson, 1999; Robinson, Sandoval, & Cook, 2003; Robinson, Moats, Davenport, Karcas, Demetrio, & Domic, 2007; Sole, Zarate, Steeples, Tinkler, & Robinson, 2013), global operating practice in copper solvent extraction (SX) in 2018 is reviewed. Contributing operations include established sites in the USA (8), Chile (9), Peru (2), Spain (1), Mexico (2), and Australia (2), as well as newer operations in Africa (7) and Asia (3). This survey represents 2018 copper cathode production of 1.91 Mt, or about 43% of world production by solvent extraction combined with electrowinning (SX–EW). Trends in operating conditions and performance, as well as equipment design and process technology choices are analysed. The significant expansion in production in the African Copper Belt is also discussed. There are currently about 130 operations worldwide producing some 4.6 Mt copper by SX–EW; of these, about half produced more than 10 000 t/a. Figure 1 shows global copper production by country. As it has for several decades, Chile remains dominant, with 36% of global production of cathode copper. Since 2005, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has increased production year on year, and now represents 23% of the global total (International Copper Study Group, 2017; Statistica, 2018). Copper production in Asia has grown significantly in the past decade, particularly since the ramp-up of Wanbao in Myanmar. There used to be numerous small copper SX plants in China (Schlesinger, King, Sole, & Davenport, 2011), although most of these have now shut down and Chinese production is lower than it was five years ago. The most important trend, however, is the rise of Chinese-owned mining companies, particularly in Central Africa, but also around the world more generally.

Thickening is the most widely applied dewatering technique in mineral processing. Thickeners are used to increase the concentration of suspension by sedimentation, accompanied by the formation of a clear liquid. As the particles get finer the thickening process encounters difficulty due to a significant change in the settling behaviour of particles. The batch settling tests of coal refuse of a coal washing plant which contained 91% particles smaller than 38µm and 0.6% coarser than 75 µm showed that the optimum feed percent solids that provided highest flux (solids handling capacity) was 4%. The flux of the pulp with the plant solids concentration (i.e., 10%) was 60% lower than that of the pulp with 4% solids. A thickener with a diameter of 22m based on the dilution of feed from solids concentration of 10% to 4% was designed. Monitoring of the thickener performance for a period of one month in the plant indicated that on average the feedrate of 25t/h (dry solids) with solids concentration of 10% could be thickened to the underflow concentration of 26.5% with a clear water overflow. It was found that the key component of the successful operation of the thickener is the dilution of the feed without which the overflow loses its clarity and the system ceases to operate under predetermined conditions. Specially designed feeding system which efficiently dissipated the energy of the incoming flow and staged flocculant addition regime are among the main contributing factors in making the design and operation of such thickener possible.

The aqueous biphase separation process (ABS) has been used to separate ultrafine industrial minerals. The partition behavior ofTiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and kaolin was not pH dependent. The partition behavior of SiO2 was, however, pH dependent. The partition coefficient of kaolin in PEG 3400/ Na2CO3 biphase system was 150 and that of the silica in the same system was 0.02, resulting in a separation factor of 8500 between kaolin and silica. The aqueous biphase separation system was used to separate free silica from kaolin in a raw clay sample from Mexico. The partition behavior of mica, feldspar and clay from North Carolina was also evaluated.
