Amostras de polifurfural (FH) obtidas por catálise ácida foram termobaricamente tratadas em várias temperaturas e sob pressão de 6GPa em um dispositivo de alta pressão do tipo bigorna com concavidade central. Após o tratamento cada amostra foi submetida a análise por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados indicam que a FH é um material grafitável e, possivelmente, poderá ser utilizado como matéria-prima para a execução do processo de síntese.

Visando o estudo da sinergia entre abrasão e corrosão concebeu-se um novo instrumento, permitindo a medição das forças que atuam sobre o contacto. O dispositivo consiste de um equipamento de micro-abrasão por esfera fixa dotada de uma célula de carga de três eixos, e uma célula eletroquímica. Uma membrana protetora flexível foi desenvolvida para isolar a célula de carga, situado no exterior da célula eletroquímica, da amostra no interior da célula. Uma solução corrosiva com partículas abrasivas é continuamente alimentada no contacto entre a amostra e a esfera. Os ensaios de abrasão-corrosão foram realizados simultaneamente em aços inoxidáveis e ferríticos. Também foram executados ensaios de micro-abrasão e corrosão separadamente para avaliar a capacidade do equipamento nos estudos da sinergia entre a micro-abrasão e a corrosão. Para as três condições de ensaios (micro-abrasão, corrosão e abrasãocorrosão) o equipamento se mostrou eficiente em evidenciar a variação nas propriedades do material com excelente repetibilidade. Para os aços austeníticos, as mudanças nas condições de carregamento nos ensaios de abrasão-corrosão induziram variações significativas nas curvas de polarização. A capacidade única de acompanhar as forças que atuam sobre o contato dos processos de abrasão-corrosão pode abrir caminho para novas descobertas sobre o estudo da sinergia na abrasão-corrosão, em especial, a dissipação de energia na interface quantificada através do coeficiente de atrito.

Os principais objetivos de um projeto de Integração e Otimização de Processos (PIO – Process Integration and Optimisation) é de auxiliar no desenvolvimento de uma estratégia integrada de desmonte e cominuição que minimize o custo total por tonelada processada nas etapas de lavra e cominuição das operações, minimize o consumo de energia e maximize a taxa de processamento, produção de metais e lucro da empresa. O projeto consiste na revisão de práticas operacionais, auditoria e amostragem, benchmarking, modelagem e simulações das operações de perfuração e desmonte e cominuição. Isto permite uma análise holística das operações para identificar oportunidades de melhorias e desenvolver estratégias integradas e otimizadas de operação da mina-à-planta. O projeto incluiu o sistema exclusivo da Metso, SmartTag™, para rastrear o minério dos furos de desmonte na mina até a planta concentradora com o objetivo de correlacionar os tipos de minério e de desmonte com os resultados de desempenho da planta. O sistema de modelamento geometalúrgico automatizado chamado GeoMetso™ utiliza a tecnologia de rastreamento de minério SmartTag™ para coletar continuamente dados de desempenho da planta e atualizar automaticamente os modelos preditivos e o modelo de blocos em tempo real. Este sistema é a base para a implementação, validação e melhoria contínua das estratégias integradas e otimizadas de operação, além de auxiliar na reconciliação da mina-à-planta e planejamento de lavra.

"The influence of superheat degree on the distribution and volume content of inclusions were studied in 65Mn thin slab produced by compact strip production(CSP) in Zhujiang Steel in China, The results showed that the diameters of inclusions are mainly less than 5µm. Most of the inclusions gathered at the 1/4 thickness direction for the thin slab of 27? superheat degree, compared with the center position for that of 37?. There are more inclusions larger than 50µm in the low superheat samples, which is caused by the short floating time. In addition, the inclusions were observed and analyzed by metallurgical microscope, SEM and EDS in order to ensure their composition, type and further find their source. It was find that the types of these inclusions mainly are Al2O3, SiO2,CaO and their composites, a few of them are TiN and MnS.IntroductionIt is well known that inclusions have a great impact on the strength, plasticity, fracture toughness, cutting performance, fatigue property and corrosion resistance of steels. Especially, with the demand for thinner slab, the cleanness is increasingly becoming more significant as a quality criterion[1]. High manganese and carbon steels not only demonstrate high strength but also proper plasticity. There are many problems unsolved for 65Mn steel as a result of the low solidification rate, bad thermal strength, crack sensitivity and low casting temperature[2,3].The superheat of the molten steel has a great impact on the erosion of refractory lining, molten steel fluidity and non-metallic inclusion behavior[4]. The serious erosion situation of ladle lining, nozzle and casting tundish will give rise to more inclusions at a high superheat. Meantime higher superheat will make second dendrite arm spacing coursing and element segregation which lead to inclusion, bubble formation and shrinkage cavity. On the contrary, it is hard for non-metallic inclusions to float up with a low superheat value. Inclusions of 65Mn steel, which produced in different superheat condition by CSP, were studied for the sake of higher slab properties including statistics and EDS analysis."

Sample preparation for gold samples, where the distribution and size of gold particles is often irregular, usually demands that a relatively large sample weight is taken to produce a representative sample for analysis. Traditional sample preparation of gold samples incorporated multiple stages of coarse particle size reduction followed by subdivision of the sample prior to final fine pulverising. This technique developed because of the limited equipment options available to laboratories. As a result significant errors are introduced and the final sample size being pulverised is a small fraction of the original sample weight. Three significant developments have occurred in the last 25 years to significantly improve sample preparation of gold samples: 1.  large capacity fine pulverising,2.  fine jaw crushing, and3.  whole sample coarse pulverising. In the mid-1980s an Australian manufacturer developed large capacity pulverising bowls which had the ability to reduce samples with a mass of 1.5 - 3.5 kg to a nominal 0.075 mm product in approximately three to five minutes. Laboratories were able to produce a large homogeneous pulverised sample which significantly reduced the error in sampling. However, exploration and mine samples are usually 7 to 10 kg and the sample requires a subdivision stage following crushing to produce the 3.5 kg for the pulverising step, thus introducing potential for significant error. The development of fine jaw crushing allowed particle size reduction to -2 mm which reduced the subdivision error of the bulk sample prior to fine pulverising. Subdivision of the crushed sample at -2 mm still results in potential sampling errors, where the gold particles are not sufficiently liberated to be representatively sampled. Clearly the best option would be to reduce the particle size small enough to ensure a representative sample prior to final pulverising. Continuous mills offer a partial solution but are relatively slow and subject the sample to differential pulverising prior to subdivision. Clearly this does not provide the best solution for routine laboratory applications where high volumes of samples are to be processed. The recent development of a large capacity coarse pulverising system allows samples of up to 10 kg to be reduced to -0.25 mm prior to subdivision, and fine pulverised to -0.075 mm. Laboratories now have the necessary equipment to perform reliable large capacity sample preparation of gold samples. The exact choice of a sample preparation scheme may still depend on particular ore types but the need for multiple crushing and subdivision stages is redundant.

O desenvolvimento da indústria automobilística exige inovações na área de materiais de engenharia assim como de processos. A partir desta necessidade, as propriedades dos aços baixo e médio carbono podem ser melhoradas com a precipitação e refino de grão associado à adição de pequenas quantidades de elementos formadores de nitretos, carbonetos e carbonitretos. Aços baseados nestes princípios podem classificar-se como aços microligados, apresentando elevados níveis de resistência mecânica e tenacidade sem aumentos significativos nos custos de fabricação. No entanto, um dos métodos de obtenção de estruturas refinadas na indústria é mediante o processamento termomecânico com o propósito de se atingir uma microestrutura predeterminada. Assim o refino obtido é baseado no controle da cinética de nucleação e crescimento de grão. Neste trabalho foi estudado o efeito do forjamento a morno no refino de grão de um aço microligado. Inicialmente, as amostras foram aquecidas a 550°C, deformadas através de um processo de forjamento (40%, 60% e 80%) e resfriadas em água. Em seguida foram recozidas na região subcrítica por tempos variando de 1 min a 10 min e novamente resfriadas em água. A evolução microestrutural, assim como o comportamento mecânico deste aço, foram avaliados através de microscopia óptica, eletrônica (varredura e transmissão) e testes de dureza. O processo de forjamento mostrou-se eficaz na obtenção de uma microestrutura refinada associada a uma recristalização da ferrita.

O aço inoxidável super duplex vem apresentando um desempenho satisfatório em ambientes de maior agressividade. Esse tipo de aço possui boas propriedades de resistência mecânica, resistência à corrosão e tenacidade ao impacto. Entretanto, mesmo apresentando desempenho satisfatório, esses aços podem apresentar problemas de corrosão quando sofrem algum tratamento térmico, devido à precipitação de uma fase deletéria chamada de alfa linha (?’), a qual precipita em temperaturas entre 300°C e 550°C e pode ocasionar uma diminuição da resistência à corrosão e tenacidade do material. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a resistência à corrosão dos aços inoxidáveis super duplex de grau 5A e 6A após sofrerem tratamento térmico a 475oC. A diferença entre os aços de grau 5A e 6A ocorre na presença de cobre e tungstênio na composição química do aço com grau 6A. A resistência à corrosão dos corpos de prova foi avaliada por meio das seguintes técnicas eletroquímicas: polarização anódica, espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica e temperatura crítica de pite. A resistência mecânica dos corpos de prova foi avaliada por meio da técnica de dureza Brinell. Foi realizada também a caraterização microestrutural e a quantificação das fases do material. Os resultados mostraram um aumento da dureza do material, indicando um aumento da presença da fase ?’ com 10 horas de tratamento térmico apresentaram maior resistência à corrosão.

As indústrias podem possuir diversos sistemas especialistas para a gestão de cada uma das dimensões do negócio e, no caso, dos dados de análise a gestão de dados de laboratório a funcionalidade se dá com o LIMS, Sistema de gerenciamento de dados de laboratório (Laboratory Information Management System) e o Sistemas para o armazenamento de dados históricos de processo, PIMS, (Plant Information Management System). A correlação de dados de processo com dados de qualidade (resultados de análises de laboratório) é fator crítico de sucesso para o acompanhamento e gestão dos processos produtivos. Na intenção de atender as demandas dos usuários das informações correlacionadas, procuram guardar dentro do PIMS as informações do LIMS que agreguem valor para estes usuários. Cada variável historiada no PIMS consome uma posição de armazenamento (TAG). O quantitativo de TAG é parâmetro de licenciamento das soluções PIMS e o uso indiscriminado destes pode inviabilizar o projeto na dimensão custo. O presente trabalho apresenta solução para cadastramento dos resultados de análise utilizando estratégia de hierarquização no banco de dados. Esta estratégia reduzir para 20% (economia de 80% de TAG) do total de posições de armazenamento apuradas durante o levantamento de dados caso fosse utilizada a prática convencional de cadastramento dos dados. A hierarquização de dados reduz consideravelmente a demanda de TAG e não onera o processamento dos dados no momento da pesquisa e apresentação dos dados.

O processo de lingotamento contínuo consiste de uma série de etapas que promoverão a extração de calor de maneira controlada do aço líquido, com o objetivo de promover sua solidificação. Uma vez que a solidificação é considerada uma transformação de fase, regida essencialmente pela troca térmica, o enfoque do processo de lingotamento contínuo se encontra direcionado para o perfil térmico de resfriamento do aço desenvolvido ao longo dos veios da máquina. É extremamente importante para a qualidade final do tarugo que este processo de extração de calor ocorra a taxas controladas, de maneira contínua e uniforme em todas suas faces. Segregação, trincas e romboidade são alguns dos problemas de qualidade que podem ser originados devido a um controle não assertivo ou deficiência do sistema de refrigeração. Os tarugos lingotados do aço 1545-D, produzidos na máquina de lingotamento contínuo da Votorantim Siderurgia Barra Mansa, apresentavam com frequência trincas sub-superficiais nas quatro direções de resfriamento e a uma distância constante da superfície do tarugo. Através de equações de solidificação foi constatado que a profundidade em que as trincas se encontravam nos tarugos correspondia a um trecho da máquina no qual existia gap de refrigeração, provocando reaquecimento do material e o surgimento de trincas devido ao regime de contração/dilatação ao qual o mesmo estava submetido. Tais conclusões permitiram comprovar falha no projeto de refrigeração secundária da máquina.

The Northside Storage Tunnel (NST) is the largest tunnelling project ever undertaken in Sydney. The tunnel extends deep underground from the western bank of the Lane Cove river to the North Head sewage treatment plant (STP), with a branch tunnel from Scotts Creek connecting to the main tunnel under Tunks Park. The aim of the tunnel is to intercept wet weather overflows from four key points along the northernsuburbs ocean outfall sewer (NSOOS) and provide short-term storage and transfer of sewage to NorthHead STP for treatment prior to discharge to the ocean through the deep ocean outfall. The project was an ambitious undertaking by an alliance between the client Sydney WaterCorporationand the engineering firms of Montgomery Watson, Connell Wagner and Transfield to design andconstruct approximately 20 kilometres of tunnel, tunnel declines and shafts in just over three years. In order to achieve this tight timeframe construction of the NST has been undertaken simultaneously at seven construction sites located across the northern suburbs of Sydney. As with most tunnelling operations, tunnel boring machines (TBMÆs) and roadheaders dominated the excavation activities. Tunks Park and North Head STP are the major tunnelling sites. An access decline was excavated using roadheaders at both of these sites to facilitate tunnelling using TBMÆs. Three TBMÆs 3.8 m, 6.0 m and 6.3 m diameter) were launched from Tunks Park and one TBM (6.5 m diameter) was launched from North Head. At the overflow interception sites of Scotts Creek, Lane Cove River and Quakers Hat Bay two vertical shafts known as drop and access/ventilation shafts were constructed. These shafts would provide the linkage between the existing sewer and the tunnel. As their names suggest the drop shaft would convey the wet weather sewage overflows to the tunnel while the access/ventilation shaft would provide access during dry weather and ventilation during a filling event. The fourth overflow site of Tunks Park would use the tunnel decline as its link to the tunnel. Originally these shafts were to be excavated using the raise bore method. This technique however, is entirely dependent on the TBMÆs reaching the shaft locations at the specified time. This was not the case at two of the three shaft excavation locations and top down methods of excavation such as, a percussive cone fracturing (PCF), blind bore, mechanical excavation and drill and blast were investigated to ensure the project met its completion schedule. Traditionally project decisions are dominated by cost and schedule objectives. The contractual arrangement of the Alliance however, required that the objectives of safety, community and environment also be considered in any decision making process. Thus each of these top down methods of excavation were assessed against these five objectives. On considering all of these factors the use of explosives was considered to be the superior technique.

As pesquisas em transformação de fase ganharam novos horizontes a partir dos recentes estudos de Rios & Villa. Eles desenvolveram inéditos modelos analiticamente exatos a partir da geometria estocástica. Estes modelos são exatos para resoluções de problemas de nucleação e crescimento não homogêneos. O presente trabalho visa o estudo da nucleação em clusters, cuja cinética de transformação de fase sólido-sólido diverge consideravelmente daquela prevista pelo modelo JMAK. Nesse tipo de nucleação, os núcleos não estão homogeneamente dispersos na matriz, mas concentrados em regiões preferenciais chamadas clusters. Um dos principais parâmetros dessa nucleação é o número de clusters na matriz. Nesse trabalho, utilizando um modelo estocástico baseado na teoria do Cone Causal, foram simuladas reações de nucleação e crescimento que ocorrem especificamente em forma de clusters esféricos. Foi possível analisar o efeito que a variação do número de clusters provoca na cinética de transformação de fase e comparar os resultados obtidos com o modelo de Rios & Villa. Por meio dessa comparação, é possível observar que o modelo analítico corroborara com os resultados numéricos. Como conclusões principais tem-se que quanto menor o número de clusters, mais lenta é a reação de transformação de fase e que a microestrutura gerada possui características próprias e os resultados podem ser interpretados de maneira errônea se a presença dos clusters não for propriamente detectada.

The presence in the Tennessee Valley of extensive deposits of olivine, a silicate of magnesium and iron that contains approximately 28 per cent magnesium, has been recognized since 1896 when Lewis8 published a survey of basic magnesium rocks of western North Carolina. A recent field survey by T.V.A.7 showed that more than two hundred million tons of high-grade olivine occurs above local drainage levels in western North Carolina and northern Georgia. Except for sporadic attempts to work the olivine for its nickel and chromium contents,10 the ore received little attention industrially until 1926 when Goldschmidt3 suggested its use in the manufacture of refractories. Only one instance is recorded of an attempt to utilize the ore commercially for its magnesium content;" in this case a process was used in which olivine was treated with sulphuric acid, the resultant mixture was leached with water, and the leach solution was purified and evaporated to form epsom salts, which was the end product. As a part of its program of contributing to the development of the natural resources of the region, the Tennessee Valley Authority became interested in the olivine deposits as a source of metallic magnesium because of their high magnesium content and proximity to hydroelectric power. Studies were undertaken to determine the feasibility of producing magnesium chloride by extraction of olivine. The experimental work was carried out successively at the T.V.A. Minerals Testing Laboratory, Norris, Tenn., at the Georgia State Engineering Station,* Atlanta, Ga., and at the T.V.A. laboratory at Wilson Dam, Ala. The present paper describes a process. developed through the pilot-plant stage, whereby magnesium chloride suitable for reduction to metallic magnesium can be prepared from olivine by extraction with hydrochloric acid and subsequent purification. Research on the magnesium-from-olivine process, originally intended for peacetime use, was given impetus by the shortage of magnesium that existed at the beginning of the current world war. By the time the process was sufficiently developed to justify a proposal for its inclusion in the war program, the shortage had been met by expansion and development of other processes. However, it is believed that the magnesium-from-olivine process may have advantages that will warrant consideration of its use after the war, when the economics of the various processes rather than production on a wartime scale will be the criterion for commercial production of magnesium. Fire experiments were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, with coal, diesel-fuel, electrical-cable, conveyor-belt, and metal-cutting fire sources to determine the response of fire sensors to products-of-combustion (POC). Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) and smoke fire sensors demonstrated an earlier fire detection capability than a CO sensor. This capability was of particular significance for a conveyor-belt fire in which the optical visibility was reduced to 1.52 m with an increase in CO of less than 2 ppm at a distance of 148 m from the fire. Application of a neural-network program to the sensor responses from each type of fire source resulted in correct classifications of coal, diesel-fuel, cable, belt, and metal-cutting combustion with a mean of 96% of the test data correctly classified.

Beach sand minerals from the volcanic rock structures of the Drakensberg, Kwazulu-Natal, (South Africa) have been processed. Screening, flotation, spiral concentration and magnetic separation methods were used either separately or successively in an attempt to concentrate monazite minerals. Products thereof and those from a long time (up to 72 hours) microwaves treatment of the finally produced ilmenite-bearing minerals have been studied using the M÷ssbauer effect spectroscopy. The 57Fe M÷ssbauer effect spectroscopy has demonstrated its versatility and power in monitoring the ilmenite internal reduction mechanism and products and, in characterising the iron-bearing phases contained in different products from the beach sand minerals processing. Microwaves heating of ilmenite for up to 38 hours reduced internally the Fe3+ from the ilmeniteÆs structure. A more prolonged microwaves heating (up to 72 hours) re-oxidised the mineral. 61 per cent natural ilmenite recovery was obtained in the floating products of a spiral concentrated -212+106 ¦m screened and beach sand minerals fraction. A preferential concentration of hematite with a 62 per cent recovery was found in the sinking products while the combination of screening-spiral separation-magnetic separation and flotation yielded a floating product with the highest ilmenite and the highest hematite abundanceÆs (71 per cent, 19 per cent respectively). A natural ilmenite containing 87 per cent ilmenite and 13 per cent hematite could be produced and extracted from the sinking products of the flotation process collected subsequently to the spiral concentration and the initial screening.

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Contract A146, Tunnels from 5th/HILL Station to 7th/Flower Station, involves tunnel construction through the heart of downtown Los Angeles. The alignment of the tunnels passes beneath twelve buildings, ranging from a 3-story below grade parking structure to numerous 12 to 14 story buildings. The soil along the alignment is alluvium, consisting of silts and clays, clean sands and gravels located above the ground water table. Because of unstable ground conditions, which led to excessive ground losses in several instances, and because of the potential for excessive building settlements, it became necessary to design and perform a program of chemical grouting. The chemical grouting program was designed such that tunneling could proceed on a one shift per day basis, with chemical grounting being performed on the remaining two shifts. Each day 21,000 to 31,000 liters of sodium silicate grout were injected through sleeveport grout pipes installed 18 m deep through the tunnel face. Tunnel advance rates of 12 m per day, 60 m per week, under full chemical grout cover were achieved. The chemical grouting program virtually eliminated both ground loss and settlement and permitted successful excavation of the tunnels. This .study defines the basic mechanism of the mis-cible displacerrzent of oil and writer from porous Medici by various water-driven alcohol .slugs. Three distinct alcohol slug processes were .studied. Considerable data concerning the quanity of alcohol required for oil recovery were also obtained. All data were obtained in a 1-in. diameter, 100-ft long, unconsolidated core. The porosity of this system was 35 per cent. and the permeability was approxitrlately 4 darcies. Total core pore volume wax 5,716 cc. All displacements were conducted at a constant injection rate of 5 to 6 cc//min, which corresponds to a frontal advance of 5 ro 6 ft/hr. The first portion of this paper is concerned with 111 use of one alcohol—isopropyl—a\. the slug material. Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is completely miscible with both oil rind water; however, miscibility of the threc-component systems, oil-water-IPA, requires a relutively. high concentration of IPA. Hence, the displocement is not of the misoible type unless the IPA concentration is maintained above some critical value. A slug of IPA equal to only 13.5 per cent of the pore volume was jound to be sufficient to obtain complete recover?, of residua1 naphtha. In later studies two distinct process variations were developed. The firsr of these utilized methyl alcohol (MA) and IPA as slug materials. It was shown that methyl alcohol may he substituted for IPA at the front and rear of the slug with no loss of oil recovery. A .slug of 4 per cent MA-4 per cent IPA-4 per cent MA was sufficient for complere oil recovery. Because MA is considerably cheaper than IPA, this represents an important step toward economic application. A .second process variation used normal butyl alcohol (nBA) and MA as the composite slug, the nBA segnzent being injected first. This technique requires the smallest total slug size (approximately 10 per cent) of all processes studied. The high cost of nBA, however, precludes commercial application. It is possible that this basic process, subject to changes of alcohol type, may lead to a commrercicil process. INTRODUCTION Within the last 10 years, considerable study has been devoted to the general mechanics of miscible phase dis- placements in porous media. These studies have. in general, dealt with two-component displacernent. All reported field trials to date have been modified gas drives of one type or another. These utilize either lean gas at high pressure, rich gas at lower pressure or an LPG slug. The irreducible water content of the reservoir remains immobile during these processes. Although these techniques hold great promise. certain drawbacks do exist. Poor areal sweep efficiency, inherent in any displacement having a highly unfavorable mobility ratio, is one disadvantage. Furthermore, the miscibility of all processes which use gas is dependent on pressure. These pressure limitations may prohibit application to shallow reservoirs. There are also many areas where large quantities of LPG and natural gas are not readily available. These factors emphasize the need for improved techniques. The alcohol slug process is also a miscible-phase displacement process. It differs from the previously mentioned two-component techniques, however, in that both the reservoir oil and water are displaced by the slug. This behavior is a consequence of the miscibility of certain oil-water-alcohol systems. In the simplest case, a relatively small volume (slug) of an alcohol (such as isopropyl) is injected into the system. Water is then used to drive the slug through the medium. Thus. three components—-alcohol. oil and connate water-—exist at the front side of the slug. Miscibility is obtained at some alcohol concentration, this being dependent on the solubility of the particular system. Miscibility is maintained within the slug until the alcohol concentration falls below that value required to maintain miscibility. When miscibility is lost, the process reverts to a water flood. Certain inherent benefits of this technique are apparent. High pressures are not necessary to obtain miscibility in these liquid systems. Furthermore, water is a more desirable driving agent than gas because of the improved mobility ratio and the attendant improvement in areal sweep efficiency. The main disadvantage is, of course, the relatively high cost of alcohols. The use of an alcohol slug to recover reservoir oil is not a new idea." ' However, this process has received only limited study, presumably due to the lack of industrial interest caused by the seemingly prohibitive cost of alcohols. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of the displacement of oil and water by various alcohol slugs and to develop process modifications aimed toward possible commercial application.

The City of Kalgoorlie/Boulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth (Fig. 1), and is the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25,000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operat- ing entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon com- pany). This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.8 million ounces of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden Mile located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation. KCGM's current production is 520,000 ounces per year, with the com- bined Fimiston operations (open cut and underground) contributing 400,000 ounces. The current expansion will increase production levels by a further 150,000 ounces. Traditionally 98 per cent of gold has been sourced from underground areas, however the recent upsurge of open cut operations is rapidly overturning this historical relationship.
