An experimental hole-to-hole seismic probe system has been developed for use in coal measure geology as a means of determining the structural conditions of coal seams. The source probe produces a 500-joule electric arc discharge whose seismic wavelet has a spectrum in the 200 to 2,000 Hz frequency range. Low compliance hydrophones contained in the source probe as well as in a separate seismic detector probe are matched to the frequency range of the source. Both probes are constructed with 5-72 cm diameter housings. The transducers in the probes are equipped with fluid-inflatable boots to permit operation in either wet or dry boreholes. Preliminary tests in vertical boreholes drilled 213 m apart in sedimentary rock formations show reliable operation and useful seismic propagation measurements along horizontal and oblique paths up to 232 m in length. Because the seismic wave- let has an accurately repeatable waveshape, multiple shots and signal averaging techniques can be used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and extend the transmission distances.

The solidification of aluminum-rich aluminum-copper alloys was investigated for different solidification rates. The measured amounts of nonequilibrium eutectic were compared with the amounts calculated on the assumption of no diffusion in the solid. The morphology of the eutectic was studied and dendritic spacings were measured. Compositions of the cored primary solid solutions were determined by quantitative autoradiography after activation of the solute copper by neutron irradiation. CONSIDERABLE progress has been made in recent years toward an understanding of the solidification of metals. This is especially true for the factors involved in nucleation, the controlled growth of metal crystals from melts, and various aspects of the freezing of ingots and castings. Many features of the solidification process, however, are not understood adequately and much further work is required. In the research reported here the solidification of a series of aluminum-rich aluminum-copper alloys was investigated. Different degrees of deviation from the idealized case of equilibrium solidification were attained by varying the rate of solidification. Thermal analysis and microscopic examination were supplemented by lineal analysis and autoradiography. The latter required the use of radioactive tracers and was adapted to the quantitative determination on a microscale of concentrations of copper dissolved in aluminum. The tracers were produced in situ by activating the copper with neutrons. These techniques permitted a correlated interpretation of the temperature-time history, the amounts of nonequilibrium eutectic and the general morphology of the alloys, and yielded quantitative data on microsegregation. Nonequilibrium Solidification In the general case of the solidification of a solid solution in accordance with the phase diagram, the composition of the coexisting liquid and solid must change continuously. This change requires diffusion, which at best remains incomplete in the solid during solidification. The resulting inhomogeneity of the solid solution crystals is well-known as coring, dendritic segregation, or microsegregation. The generally accepted analysis of coring assumes that, 1—no diffusion occurs in the solid, 2—diffusion is complete in the liquid, and 3—the composition of the solid formed on cooling through any infinitesimal temperature interval is given by the solidus of the phase diagram. On this basis, In this equation m designates mass, x designates the concentration of solute and the subscripts L and S refer to the liquid and solid phases, respectively; the subscript o indicates the initial state, in which the liquid is identical with the entire system. Eq. 1 or its equivalent has been derived repeatedly'-7 and an analogous equation, known as Rayleigh's equation, has been used for distillation. The assumptions on which Eq. 1 is based do not include an infinitely fast cooling rate as sometimes stated. In fact, Olsen and Hultgren %ave shown by experiment that very high solidification rates suppress coring, presumably by preventing diffusion in the liquid and by the effect undercooling has on the composition of the nucleus. Coring thus occurs at rates of cooling which are too fast for a close approach to equilibrium in the solid and too slow to suppress diffusion in the liquid and to cause marked undercooling. The bioremediation of zinc was carried out using Pseudomonas alcaligenes, a Gram negative heterotroph. The parameters such as pH, bacterial cell number, initial metal concentration, and interaction time on the biosorption of zinc were studied. The maximum zinc uptake was found to be about 95% at pH 5 and biomass loading of 2.7x1010cells/mL. The biosorption isotherm for zinc exhibited Langmuirian behavior and the Gibbs free energy of biosorption was determined to be -31.2 kJ/mol, indicative of coordination of zinc with the functional groups on the bacterial surface. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second order equation. FTIR and EDAX studies confirmed the interaction of zinc with the biomass. The mechanisms of metal-microbe interactions are discussed.

The Saskatchewan ore zone strikes slightly south of East, from the Alberta border to Manitoba; and dips to the South. The conventional mines are located along a broad strike line from Saskatoon to Esterhazy-Rocanville. Nine conventional mines have developed ore bodies at a nominal depth of 915 metres (3000 ft.). One mine had developed an ore body at 1525 metres (5000 ft.) by solution mining. Mining reserves of 100 years are not unusual in this vast ore body. Most of the mines were brought on stream during the 1960s. All the conventional mines were influenced by practices developed at Carlsbad, N.M. By 1970, the industry was faced with serious over-capacity resulting in the cancellation of some projects and the introduction, by the provincial government, of the Potash Pro-rationing Regulations designed to share the available market amongst all the producers. This resulted in production rates as low as 40% of capacity. As a result, the 1970s were characterized by attempts to reduce cost, rather than improve production or processing techniques. In recent years, the plants have all been brought to full capacity, and are currently involved in a massive program of expansion, which promises a period of advancing technology.

The microstructures and textures developed by the working of high-purzly thermochemically deposited tungstem sheet have been inuesligated. Greater than 60 pct reduction was required to deslroy the columnar grain structure which existed in the as-deposited sheet. With increasing reductions the texture gradu-ally charged from the initial as-deposited orientation with (100) parallel to the sheet normal to a (100}(011) ideal ovienlation with some spread about the rolling direction. This texture was retained after recrystalli-zation a1 2000°C. THE processes for depositing tungsten by hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexafluoride have been under development for the past several years.1,2 The nature of the deposition process is such that the as-deposited material contains a highly oriented columnar grain structure perpendicular to the deposition substrate. This well-defined columnar structure may be useful in certain applications293 but a wrought or equiaxed structure may be desired for some components such as tubing. Knowledge of the effects of working ther-mochemically deposited (TCD) tungsten is therefore necessary in order to establish the feasibility of obtaining worked and recrystallized microstructures and textures. The details of a recently developed technique for thermochemically depositing flat, uniformly thick tungsten sheet are presented with emphasis on the effects of deformation by rolling on the microstructure and texture. Although no work has been previously reported on the rolling and the annealing textures of TCD tungsten, there have been some determinations of textures for cold-rolled tungsten foil prepared from powder-metal -lurgy billets.4-8 The general description is that of a predominantly lurgy{100}(011) texture, with some spread about the rolling direction as an axis. pugh5 reports data both for cold-rolled and for annealed foil having about 96 pct initial cold work. He observed no change in texture, except for a decrease in the spread, for annealing treatments of 30 min at temperatures up to 1800°C. On annealing at 1900°C, both the low-temperature components plus new components which were described alternately as {001}(320) plus {001)(230) or as {100}(011) ± 12 deg about the sheet normal were observed. Above 1900°C, the new orientation existed alone, and it was stable up to 2500°C, the highest temperature that Pugh investigated. THERMOCHEMICAL DEPOSITION OF TUNGSTEN SHEET High-purity tungsten sheet was reproducibly deposited on the inner walls of a molybdenum mandrel by the thermochemical reaction WFs(g) + 3H2(g) - W(s) + 6HF(g). The mandrel was heated by a five-zone tube furnace which afforded a controllable fixed-temperature profile. Sheets measuring 1+ by 12 in. have been deposited with uniform thicknesses of up to 0.145 m. As shown schematically in Fig. 1, the purified reaction gases were metered into a mixing chamber at a Hz-to-WF6 ratio of 15 and preheated to 350°C. The flow rate of the WF6 was 300 cu cm per min at stp. These gases were directed through a conical injector into the deposition chamber. Inside this chamber hydrogen reduction of the WF6 to pure tungsten metal occurred on the hot walls of the molybdenum mandrel at a total pressure of 5 Torr. Typical temperatures for the five zones in the chamber were, respectively, 565", 540", 550°, 570°, and 590°C. Data on smog-forming reactivities of exhaust aldehydes are scarce. Such data were obtained by irradiating in a smog chamber typical exhaust aldehydes, individually and in exhaustlike mixtures. Observed reactivity manifestations were rate of nitrogen dioxide formation (RNO2) and yields of oxidant, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and formaldehyde. Results showed that exhaust aldehydes vary widely in reactivity. Formaldehyde showed high RNO2 reactivity but low oxidant yield; benzaldehyde, [m]-, and [p]-tolualdehyde were totally unreactive when irradiated individually; [o]-tolualdehyde was reactive. In mixtures, benzaldehyde manifested reactivity in terms of peroxybenzoyl nitrate yield. Exhaust aldehydes as a group are judged to be as reactive as the exhaust olefin group. The importance of the aldehyde contribution to exhaust reactivity and methods for assessing such contribution are discussed.

The predominent method of coal mining in the United States for years has been room-and-pillar mining. The reason for this has been the advantages of room-and- pillar method which is a relatively flexible system and its capital investment. The room-and-pillar method permits some selectivity in mining, especially where gas wells, faults and possible coal quality may be a factor. The mobility of continuous and conventional mining equipment used to develop entries may also be used for retreat mining of rooms and pillars. Longwall mining of coal takes place along a long straight face, or wall, blocked out between two butt or panel entries. The long faces or walls are normally projected in lengths of 61 to 183 m (200 to 600 ft) in this country. The longwall method of mining had its beginning in the United States during the 1800's. During that period, pack wall and wood posts were used for roof support. The longwall face was mined by miners using picks to undercut the coal. To keep the coal face from turning over, short wood posts called sprags were set in a slant position as the coal face was undercut to the depth of two to three feet. When the under-cutting cycle was completed, the sprags were removed to permit the coal to fall from the roof pressure. The longwall mining of coal did not take a firm hold during the 18009s, and room-and-pillar prevailed. In the early 19009s, steel jacks were introduced, and along with it, the modified caving theory. In March of 1950, a retreat longwall mining system, utilizing a plow, manually operated props, wood cribs and chock releases, was installed in one of Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s mines.

DeGrussa Copper Mine, resource status 10.2 Mt at 5.7 per cent Cu, 2.1 g/t Au (Sandfire Resources, 2013), commenced concentrate production through its 1.5 Mt/a conventional copper flotation processing plant in September 2012. Geometallurgical assessment during the feasibility study identified potential process-critical ore factors that required further investigation to determine potential impact on processing. Ore characterisation and metallurgical processing performance test work of ore types ensued and subsequently, the first quantitative DeGrussa geometallurgy model was born. Now one year into steady state production, the geometallurgical program has evolved significantly from its infancy and provides valuable insight into ore characterisation and behaviour in the processing plant. This paper details geometallurgical investigations undertaken at DeGrussa to date; from feasibility metallurgical test work through to geometallurgical modelling and management practices, as well as reconciliation between observations at feasibility study level and subsequent observations in production.CITATION:Condon, J, Butler, C, Hooper, B and Vass, P, 2013. "The proportion of refractory sulphide ores and concentrates in world gold mining industry is growing every year. Pressure oxidation of these materials (in autoclave) allows to oxidize gold hosting minerals. Traces of halides and pseudohalides present in the slurry liquids contribute to formation of complex gold compounds. Sorption-active carbon present in ores leads to irreversible adsorption of complex gold compounds and their loss. The objective of the research is to study gold extraction dependence on the concentration of chloride-, cyanide- and thiocyanate-ions in the slurry liquids during pressure oxidation. Double refractory flotation concentrate of the Bakyrchik deposit was used for the testwork. The research was planned on the basis of a full factorial experimental design with additional refining experiments. Ligand concentrations (0 – 1000 mg/l Cl-, 0 – 600 mg/l CN-, 0 – 1200 mg/l of SCN-), temperature (200 – 240 °?) and retention time (1 – 6 h) were used as variables of pressure oxidation process. It was determined that sulfide minerals oxidize much faster than ""organic"" carbon. Under the conditions of T = 240 ?C, t = 2 h, sulphide sulfur oxidation was 95.6%, while ""organic"" carbon oxidation was 46.1 %. Each of the examined ligands has a significant adverse impact on gold extraction. Analysis of the experimental data demonstrated that with a high degree of confidence (R2 = 0.883) gold extraction does not depend on the ligand type, but only on its concentration and the ""organic"" carbon oxidation degree. In case of complete oxidation of ""organic"" carbon, the presence of the ligand (L = Cl-, CNS-, CN-) in the liquids at a concentration of up to 20 millimole/L does not significantly affect gold extraction. The assumption that the main factor of preg-robbing in ???-CIL treatment of double refractory concentrates is the natural ""organic"" carbon sorption-active to gold has been confirmed. INTRODUCTION In recent decades, placer gold mining has been gradually declining and hardrock gold mining, including ""refractory"" gold mining, has been growing all over the world, as well as in the Russian Federation (http://www.miningworld.ru, 2015). One of the main reasons why gold ores are refractory is gold adsorption on natural carbonaceous materials (""organic carbon""). Only a few technologies are suitable for processing such ore concentrates (a significant amount of gold is contained in refractory hardrock ore both in Russia and worldwide) (Vorob'yev-Desyatovskiy N.V., Yepifanov A.V., 2014)."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report discusses the results of research conducted in the Bureau's experimental mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory on the response of fire sensors to simulated mine fires, which included (1) a slowly developing coal-conveyor belt fire, (2) a rapidly burning liquid fuel-belt fire, and (3) a liquid fuel-belt fire in the presence of diesel exhaust. During these tests, several mine fire sensors were evaluated with respect to sensor placement, spacing, and type. The data indicate that smoke sensors alarm several minutes before CO sensors do; and that, in the presence of diesel exhaust, a prototype diesel-discriminating smoke sensor can successfully function without being sensitive to the diesel contaminants. The vertical placement of sensors in the entry near the fire was also shown to be critical in terms of alarm times. Additional data showed that variations exist in response time and level of response for two brands of electrochemical CO sensor. Results also indicate that early detection of fires will improve the probability of miners' escape, because of reduced smoke concentrations during the incipient stages of the fire.

"This paper outlines a management philosophy aimed at promoting employee involvement, quality and process improvement at Inco 's Thompson operations. It describes the use of statistical process control techniques, lessons learned and examples of progress.IntroductionThis paper provides an overview of the Manitoba Division's performance through the promotion of greater employee involvement, quality and process improvement. Having learned from other practitioners o f quality management, the Manitoba Division believes its experiences are applicable to all mining and other businesses.The Thompson operation consists of two underground mines, an open pit, a mill, a smelter and an electrolytic refinery. The workforce consists of 2000 members. The main products are electrolytic nickel slab and proprietary nickel rounds. Production levels are currently at capacity in response to heavy market demand.Paralleling much of the mining industry the corporation was faced with six years of decreasing nickel prices (Fig. I). Inco Limited survived by focusing on productivity and cost improvement. Manitoba Division productivity improved 32070 over three years beginning in 1982-the worst financial year in the company's history (Fig. 2). A real unit cost reduction of 20%, net of inflation, was also achieved (Fig . 3)."

Wood cribs have been the dominant form of supplemental support in coal mining for many years. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in prop supports as a replacement for wood cribbing due to the increasing cost of mine timber and engineering advancements in prop design to improve their stability and yield capability. Prop supports generally consume less material, can be installed in less time with less labor, and provide less restriction to mine ventilation than wood crib supports. Several prop supports are now available or under development'. These include: (1) Strata Products Propsetter? Support System; (2) Heintzmann ACS and Super Prop; (3) MBK-Hydraulik MEGA prop; (4) Advanced Mining Technology Inc. (AMTI) BTS Mortar prop; (5) Dywidag Coal Post; (6) Western Support Systems YIPPI support; and (7) "The Can" support by Burrell Mining Products. A comparison of the performance and cost of these support systems to wood cribs is made to provide mine operators with information needed to assess their application potential. Examples of current underground installations are discussed. Included in this assessment are full scale tests of these supports conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines' Mine Roof Simulator.

The pseudo-binary phase diagram of the cuspidine (3CaO2?SiO2?CaF2) - CaF2 system has been studied by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). To prevent fluorine loss in the form of a HF gas by a reaction of CaF2 with water vapor at elevated temperatures, the equilibrium experiments were conducted with the sample hermetically sealed in a platinum tube. By employing this technique, it was successfully revealed that cuspidine exists as a stable phase and congruently melts at 1684 ± 1 K, and the cuspidine - CaF2 system presents a simple eutectic type of phase diagram, of which eutectic temperature has been estimated to be around 1540 K, corresponding to the composition of 40 mass% 3CaO?2SiO2 - 60 mass% CaF2?

Gold is very important to support the financial system, and to be used in industries of the jewelry, high-tech fields such as electronics and aerospace, etc. Gold is mainly extracted from three types of ores: primary ore (vein gold), placer (alluvial gold) and associated ore. Cyanide was widely used in gold ore flotation to depress gangue minerals and leaching/cyanidation. The process of extracting gold from gold ore, its separation and flotation concentrate, specifically through a technique called cyanidation or cyanide leaching. This method, which has been dominant since the 1970s, utilizes a dilute solution of cyanide to dissolve gold from the ore. While effective, the use of cyanide raises environmental and safety concerns due to its high toxicity. Cyanide spills can have severe environmental consequences. This has led to the exploration of alternative, environmentally friendly reagents. This paper discusses processing results using the alternative flotation depressants such as sodium sulfite (Na2SO3), etc. to produce a goldrich flotation concentrate for sale to a smelter or as feed to an alternative leaching agent. and methods to extract gold from ore without relying on cyanide.

Earlier research has indicated that an addition of titanium master alloy to aluminum alloys, results in improved fillability, grain refinement and finer pores. B206 alloy differs from other alloys used in automotive industry, with lower titanium level. This paper examines the effect of alloy chemistry (copper and titanium levels) and grain refinement (A1-5`)oTi- 1%B grain refiner) on grain size, microstructure and microporosity in B206 aluminum alloy. In this study, characterization of grain size, microstructure and microporosity was carried out using light optical microscopy (LOM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results have shown that the addition of 0.05 wt % titanium resulted in grain refinement of B206 alloy. With an increase in titanium to 0.25 wt further grain refinement, much reduced pore size and uniform distribution of pores resulted. These results suggest that B206 with proper addition of titanium has a promise as an alloy for automotive casting.

The experiments described herein were made at the request of Committee D-5, on Coal and Coke, American is n Society for Testing Materials, in order to obtain data as to the probable contamination of laboratory samples of coke Then pulverized to pass a No. 63 sieve of tine U. S. Standard Sieve Series2 by methods other than by ball-mills or hard-steel diamond mortars, which methods are specified-in the standard methods of that Society.3 After pulverizing, representative samples were analyzed by the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh for ash content to detect any contamination of the samples by the pulverizing apparatus. Preparation of Core Samples for Tests. Two samples of 48-hour beehive coke (Continental and Leisenring) made from Pittsburgh coal were selected for the tests. These cokes were crushed approximately to No. 10 sieve size, by first passing through a jaw crusher and then through a, roll crusher. The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. This paper is a preliminary report of research on the Mount Morgan gold-copper deposit being done at the Division of Mineralogy, CSIRO. Fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope measurements were made on a suite of 11 samples collected by the staff of Geopeko Ltd. This suite contained representatives of the main ore and rock types of the deposit. Homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions measured on quartz from 8 of the 11 samples, ranged from 172¦C to 276¦C and to this must be added a pressure correction (in this case, up to 50¦C) to obtain the formation temperature of the mineral. Sulphur isotope measurements were made on 34 sulphides from 8 of the 11 samples. The 6S values form a well defined group ranging from -0.5%oto +3.6%owith a mean of +2.4%c. Although the preliminary data do not indicate unequivocally the origin of the deposit they do impose restraints on the wide ranging suggestions that have been put forward. This work is complementary to the paper of Dr G. Gibbons who has described other mineralogical aspects of the Mount Morgan deposit, based on a more extensive suite of Samples.

From comments and questions concerning the meaning of USNR, and "why is the Navy in the mining business?" I believe it is worth while to establish the background and purpose of our company. We are a stock company formed by the purchase and reorganization of a company known as the U. S. Natural Gas Corporation. In May 1969, a group of investors with Mr. Robert L. Katz as president and chief executive officer, created United States Natural Resources, Inc., to develop and purposively use our Natural Resources in four areas: 1. Mines and Minerals 2. Forest Products 3. oil and Gas 4. Recreational Lands As final proof that we are not a government organization, I simply state. "We pay taxes." The mining division was formed in October 1969, with the completion of the merger of USNR and Vibration Measurement Engineers, Inc., Of Evanston, Illinois. Throughout the industry we were known as "VME," our company supplied consulting service in the field of seismic energy control, mining consulting and. we operated drilling, blasting and, contracting organizations in several areas of the country. Since that time we have developed and acquired producing properties in Quarrying, Coal Mining and Cement Copper Production.
