It is well known that the superconducting critical current densities of many alloy superconductors may be increased by cold working and in some cases further enhanced by a short heat treatment. This latter enhancement has been attributed to the redistribution of dislocations into cell-like networks' and to the precipitation of second phase particles,2'3 which act as flux pinning centers. In a manner analogous to dislocation pinning in precipitation hardening alloys,4 it is expected that here also a critical distribution of the pinning centers should result in maximum pinning effect. Concentration inhomogeneities exist in most or all commercial alloys yet there have been only a few attempts made to determine their effect on critical current capacity in the absence of cold working. Sutton and Baker,5 and Kramer and Rhodes6 have found that the complex precipitation processes occurring during the aging of Ti-Nb alloys can result in critical current density enhancement. Livingston7-10 has clearly shown, for lead and indium based alloys, that the distribution of precipitated second phase particles is of critical importance in determining magnetization characteristics. However, these '(soft" alloys age at room temperature and the time involved in specimen preparation prevents metallographic examination in the state in which the superconducting measurements are made. Thus results with such alloys are expected to be biased towards larger precipitates and interpar-ticle spacing. The present study of Ta-Zr alloys was undertaken to examine the influence of second phase precipitation, as controlled by heat treatment, on the critical current capacity of well annealed polycrystalline material. A study of the published phase diagram11 indicated that annealing supersaturated samples containing up to 9 at. pct Zr at suitable temperatures would result in the precipitation of a zirconium-rich second phase. It was MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared from spectrochemically pure tantalum and zirconium. Analysis was carried out by the supplier. Major impurities in the tantalum were: 12 pprn of 02, 17 pprn of N2, 19 pprn of C, and less than 10 ppm each of Mo, Nb, Al, Cr, Ni, Si, Ti. The crystal bar zirconium was pure except for the following concentrations: 15 pprn of 02, 17 ppm of C, 23 ppm of Fe, 11 ppm of Cu, and less than 10 pprn each of Al, Ca, N2, Ti, and Sn. Samples were prepared in the form of 8 to 10 g but-tons by arc melting using a nonconsumable electrode on a water-cooled copper hearth in a high purity ar-gon atmosphere. Each button was inverted and re-melted three times to ensure an even distribution of the component elements. The samples were then homogenized at temperatures close to their melting points for 3 days in a vacuum furnace maintained at 5 x 10-7 mm Hg. After this treatment the buttons were cold rolled to sheets approximately 0.020 in. thick from which specimens were cut, 0.040 in, wide and 1 in. long suitable for critical current density (J,) and critical temperature (T,) measurements. These strips were then recrystallized and further grain growth was allowed by an additional vacuum heat treatment at 1800°C for 60 hr. Some second phase precipitation occurred during cooling of the furnace and a solution treatment was necessary to produce single phase supersaturated samples. This treatment was successfully carried out by sealing the samples together with some zirconium chips in quartz tubes under a vacuum of 5 x 10-7 mm Hg, heating at 1000°C for 5 hr and then quenching into water or liquid nitrogen. The samples were then heat treated at either 350" or 550°C and quenched into water or liquid nitrogen. All samples which were heat treated at 350°C were quenched in both cases by cracking the capsules in liquid nitrogen. The samples treated at 550°C were quenched by dropping the capsules into water. Analysis for oxygen in randomly selected samples indicated that the oxygen content was in the range of 175 to 225 ppm. Values of Tc were determined by employing a self-inductance technique. Jc measurements were made at 4.2oK by increasing the direct current through the wire in a perpendicularly applied field until a voltage of 1 pv was detected with a null meter. The risk of resistive heating at the soldered joints during these latter measurements was reduced by first plating the ends of the wires with indium and then soldering to the copper current leads using tin. Metallographic examinations were performed after mechanical polishing of the same samples and etching in a 4H20:3HN03 (conc):lHF(conc) solution.

ABSTRACT Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Because the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The “lime boil” process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95–98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

This study elucidates a new idea to predict mine fire levels by employing several machine learning techniques. A total of 120 patterns of various mine fire influencing parameters, such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and temperature, were compiled from the Adularya coal mine in Turkey. Techniques like t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) and k-means clustering were used to process the data, and support vector classification (SVC) was executed to predict various levels of the mine fire. The results revealed that the proposed model has higher credibility to predict the various levels of underground mine fires.

Carbochlorination kinetics of pure MoO3, Nb2O5, Ta2O5 and V2O5, by Cl2+CO+N2 gas mixtures was investigated between 380 and 1000 °C. Standard free energy of carhochlorination reactions and phase stability diagrams of these refractory metal compounds were calculated. The influence of total gas flow rate, temperature, reactants partial pressures on the reactivity of these oxides were investigated. The apparent activation energies were found to be about 83, 75, 110 and 100 kJ/mole below 650°C for MoO3, Nb2O5, Ta2O5 and V2O5, respectively. Above this temperature, the Arrhenius plots exhibit a rate anomaly attributed to thermal decomposition of COCl2 and/or structural changes of these refractory metal oxides. The apparent reaction order of carbochlorination of these oxides with respect to Cl2+CO was determined. For these refractory metal oxides, the reaction rate was maximum for a Cl2/CO ratio of about 1 in the chlorinating gas mixture. Results of carbochlorination of these oxides are compared and discussed.

Uranium deposits in the Spokane Indian Reservation, as well as those around Mt. Spokane, are essentially low grade, much of the ore containing less than 0.2 pct U808. The Mining Experiment Station of the Division of Industrial Research, State College of Washington, has been engaged in intensive research on the amenability of these low grade ores to froth flotation. The results: successful flotation of autinite, chief mineral constituent. At the outset of this work the goal was a concentrate of 1 pct U308 with a 90 pct recovery from ores containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. Most of the work has been done on argillite ore from the Midnight mine on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The goal has not been attained using this ore, but samples of the granite ore from Mt. Spokane yielded successful results. For example, a concentrate containing 11.2 pct U308 was produced from a Mt. Spokane high grade ore containing 1.27 pct U3O8 with a recovery of 97.8 pct. Another Mt. Spokane ore yielded a concentrate of 5.0 pct U3O8 from an ore containing 0.13 pct U3O8, with a recovery of 85 pct. This same ore gave a recovery of 93.5 pct when the grade of concentrate was reduced to 2.0 pct.

This report presents pertinent data on all active water-flooding projects in Washington County, Okla., and describes in detail the operation and production history of five representative floods. The flooding of partly depleted oil-bearing sands to produce petroleum that would not be recovered by other methods is becoming increasingly important to the oil industry. In 1942, two water-flooding projects in Washington County produced 35 barrels of oil daily from 90 developed acres. In March 1951, 4,000 barrels of oil was being produced daily by the injection of 58,000 barrels of water on 19 active projects covering 1,645 acres. Several projects are being extended, and new operations are being initiated. Figure 1 shows the location of the active water-flooding projects in Washington County. The yearly oil production from Washington County increased from 1,076,000 barrels in 1948 to 1,720,000 barrels in 1950, owing principally to the effects of water flooding. To March 1951, permits to flood more than 8,000 acres in Washington County had been granted by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

"For a copper-sulfur polymetallic mine in south China, the main valuable minerals were chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. The flotability of pyrrhotite was similar with chalcopyrite and pyrite and it was easy to be oxidized. As a result, the indexes of copper concentrate and sulfur concentrate were unsatisfactory. Furthermore, the recycling of tailings water ulteriorly deteriorated the technical indexes of copper-sulfur ore beneficiation. After a large amount of experimental studies, under the condition that the tailings water recycling rate was 100%, the copper concentrate with a grade of 22.25%Cu and a recovery of 82.46% on average was obtained for the raw ore containing 0.517%Cu, 15.94%S, 25.46%Fe on average, through using new technology “magnetic separation-flotation” and effective adjustment of parameters in the industrial test which was continuously conducted for 14 shifts in 5 days with a scale of about 75t/d. Comparing with the production indexes (the copper concentrate with a grade of 17.49%Cu, the recovery was 62.27%) during the corresponding period, the grade of copper concentrate increased 4.76%Cu, and the recovery increased 20 percentage points. Besides, the indexes of sulfur concentrate gained a considerable improvement. Currently, the new technology was adopted in the design of the new-built plant with a scale of 7000t/d of this mine. The new technology provided powerful support for the tailings water recycling and indexes improvement of copper-sulfur ore beneficiation.INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite was usually associated with pyrite and pyrrhotite in copper-sulfur ore. Due to the similar flotability, it was difficult to obtain copper concentrate and sulfur concentrate with high grade. Furthermore, sulfide ore was easy to be oxidized and a large amount of ions formed in the pulp by the dissolution of minerals, which made the pulp become acidic. As a result, pyrite and pyrrhotite were easy to be activated in acidic solution and their flotabilities became stronger. Meanwhile, hydrophilic film formed on the surface of chalcopyrite in raw ore. The flotability of chalcopyrite became weaker and it made the separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite and pyrrhotite more difficult. So it was more difficult for copper and sulfur recovering with the recycling of tailings water containing high content of heavy metal ions and reagents."

The CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3 system, characterised by its intricate phases and thermodynamic properties, plays a pivotal role in steel secondary refining processes, encompassing desulfurisation, non-metallic inclusion capture, and refractory protection. Accurate predictions for diverse industrial applications, including metallurgy, ceramics, and materials science, are imperative. To address this challenge, a combination of machine learning techniques will be specifically applied to model the liquid fraction of the slag and the solid fraction of MgO. The development of an artificial intelligence (AI) system, leveraging various machine learning techniques, has gained momentum in this project. The focus of this work is on constructing an AI model, based on machine learning techniques, within the CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3 system, utilising simulation results from FactSage™, version 8.1 (by GTT Technologies). The primary objective is to train the AI model using these simulation outputs to predict the percentage of liquid fraction and MgO saturation based on chemical composition parameters. The AI model will undergo training with a comprehensive data set of simulations within the CaOMgO- SiO2-Al2O3 system, covering a diverse range of compositional at 1873 K. These simulations, conducted through FactSage™ 8.1 software, provide a robust foundation for AI model training, ensuring generalisability and precise predictions for the liquid fraction of the slag and the solid fraction of MgO, the solid fraction of MgO in this case is determined by the difference between the total MgO and the MgO in the liquid fraction, so it is not the objective of this study to determine which phase of MgO is in the solid state.. The predictive capabilities of this AI model hold significant implications for process optimisation, quality control, and decision-making in CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3- dependent industries. Precise estimations of the liquid fraction and MgO saturation empower researchers and engineers to enhance operational efficiency and quality. This paper explores the methodologies employed for AI model creation and training, achieved results in terms of prediction accuracy, and potential applications in the field. The development of this AI system signifies a notable advancement in utilising machine learning for better comprehension and control of complex chemical systems. Furthermore, to align the study with real-world steel production, we introduce FeO and MnO at concentrations of 2 per cent and 1 per cent at 1873 K, respectively, following the validation of model results using the CaO-MgO-SiO2-Al2O3 system. This adjustment aims to bring the study closer to the observed reality in steel mills globally.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) classifies hearing loss as a separate illness category. Hearing loss accounted for 11% of all illnesses in 2005 (U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006a). According to occupational data for coal mining provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) from 2000 to 2005, operators that exceeded 100% noise dosage were from only seven types of machines: auger miners, bulldozers, continuous mining machines, front end loaders, roof bolters, shuttle cars (electric) and trucks (Title 30 CFR Part 62, 2000-2005). Roof bolting machine operators rank second among all underground machine operators that exceed 100% noise dose. The following is a brief account of the methods of measuring intelligence especially prepared for use in the U. S. Army, of typical results, and of some of their immediately practical applications. It has been prepared for the assistance of army examiners and for the information of all who are interested in the relations of scientific placement to military efficiency. Purpose of the Intelligence Tests Under the direction of the Division of Psychology, Medical Department, and in accordance with provisions of War Department General Order No. 74, mental tests are given recruits during the 2-wk. detention period. These tests provide an immediate and reasonably dependable classification of the men according to general intelligence. Their specific purposes are to aid: 1. In the discovery of men whose superior intelligence suggests their consideration for advancement; 2. In the prompt selection and assignment to development battalions of men who are so inferior mentally that they are suited only for selected assignments; 3. In forming organizations of uniform mental strength where such uniformity is desired; 4. In forming organizations of superior mental strength where such superiority is demanded by the nature of the work to be performed; 5. In selecting suitable men for various army duties or for special training in colleges or technical schools; 6. In the early formation of training groups within regiment' or battery in order that each man may receive instruction and drill according to his ability to profit thereby; 7. In the early recognition of the mentally slow as contrasted with the stubborn or disobedient; 8. In the discovery of men whose low-grade intelligence renders them either a burden or a menace to the service.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has tested a personal dosimeter for measuring radon decay products that is manufactured by Tom Scurry Associates. The tests were made to determine the accuracy of the dosimeter system for record keeping of radiation exposures to radon decay products encountered in mining. The radioactivity-detecting head is based on a design developed by the USBM, and the associated air pump was developed by the manufacturer. The dosimeter system was tested in the USBM radon chamber. The detecting head uses CaF:Dy thermoluminescent phosphors and is mounted on a self-regulating air pump. Batteries supply power sufficient for an 8-h shift. The dosimeter system is worn on the miner's belt. Dosimeter calibration tests were performed by the USBM. In addition, the pumps were tested and evaluated under continuous flow conditions. The results of these tests indicate that the Tom Scurry Associates Model DOSI600 dosimeter is suitable for general use in mines where record keeping for natural radiation exposure is required.

Simullaneous ultrasonic attenuation measurements of both quasishear waves propagating in single cryslals of aluminum indicate that, in the undeformed annealed state, the dislocation density is generally not uniform on all slip systems. Change oof attenuation measurements made during plastic defortnation of crystals , which possessed specific orientations ideal for studying the orientation dependence of dislocation damping, indicate that, for low strain levels, dislocation motion occurs on additional slip systems besides the primary one, even for crystals oriented for plastic deformation by single slip. THE sensitivity of internal friction measurements permits such measurements to be used successfully in studying the deformation characteristics of metal crystals. On the basis of experimental observations, T. A. Read1 was the first to associate internal friction losses with various dislocation mechanisms. Since that time further work2-' has been performed and a dislocation damping theory has been formulated by Granato and Lucke.6 In the amplitude independent region, this theory predicts the attenuation a to be dependent on an orientation factor O, a dislocation density A, and an average loop length L. if is a constant, independent of crystallographic orientation. For a given crystallographic orientation, changes in dislocation density and loop length give rise to the observed attenuation changes accompanying plastic deformation. The Granato-Liicke theory suggests the investigation of the orientation dependence of attenuation measurements in hopes of obtaining information to separate dislocation motion losses from other losses.7 An experimental study of the orientation dependence of attenuation in undeformed annealed single crystals should yield an insight into the uniformity of dislocation distribution throughout the entire specimen. A similar study on crystals plastically deformed in a prescribed fashion should give information about the alterations in the dislocation distribution on the slip systems activated during plastic deformation. The possible modes of elastic waves which can be propagated in aluminum,8 copper,9 zinc,10 and other hexagonal metals" have been calculated. Associated with each mode of wave propagation are dislocation damping orientation factors, which are based on the resolution of the stress field of that particular elastic wave onto the various operative slip systems in the material. These orientation factors have also been calculated as a function of crystallographic orientation in the papers cited above. Einspruch12 obtained agreement between predicted and observed attenuation values of longitudinal and shear waves in (100) and (110) directions of two undeformed aluminum crystal cubes. He ascribed the slight deviations between predicted and observed values to a nonuniform dislocation distribution, or to other loss mechanisms. In shear deformation of zinc crystals, Alers2 found that the attenuation of shear waves having their particle displacements in the slip plane was very sensitive to the deformation, while the longitudinal wave attenuation was affected only when the wave propagation direction was not normal to the slip plane. Using aluminum single crystals oriented for single slip, Hikata3 et al. found that during tensile deformation the change of attenuation of the shear wave (actually quasishear) having particle displacements nearly perpendicular to the primary slip direction exhibited the easy-glide phenomena, while longitudinal waves did not. Similar results were reported by Swanson and Green5 during compressive deformation of aluminum crystals. These results are in qualitative agreement with the calculated orientation factors for specimens of this orientation. In well-annealed, undeformed aluminum crystals, the damping is expected to be due to dislocations vibrating on all twelve slip systems. The orientation factors associated with this initial damping will be designated by O2 and O3, where a, represents the average orientation factor for the slow shear (or quasishear) wave and O3 represents the average orientation factor for the fast shear (or quasishear) wave. The calculation of these values for aluminum crystals by Hinton and Green8 shows that they vary very little as a function of crystallographic orientation—at most, by a factor of 2.47. If the dislocation density and loop length are uniform, then in the initial undeformed state, Here the subscript zero refers to the initial value of the attenuation. Also for aluminum, the calculations8 show that the orientation factors for primary slip only, associated with each shear wave, exhibit a sharp minimum for particular crystallographic orientations. A composite plot of the two shear wave orientation factors for primary slip only is shown in Fig. 1. Since these orientation factors are associated with dislocation motion occurring on the primary slip system only, the proper condition to check these factors might be attained by slightly deforming a single crystal oriented for primary slip. "A simulation model for bath smelting processes for the production of iron was developed which predicts the coal, flux, ore, and oxygen consumptions and the off gas volume, temperature and composition. The model is comprehensive in that it takes into account all of the important variables including coal composition, metal composition, ore composition, slag basicity, post combustion ratio, (PCR), prereduction degree (PRO), heat transfer coefficient (HTC) , flux, scrap charge, and heat losses. Four basic cases were considered: I. 30% PRO-50% PCR; II. 90% PRO-O% PCR; III. 60% PRO-30% PCR; and IV. 0% PRO-50% PCR. Several different coals were considered and a sensitivity analysis of the critical variables was performed. The model also estimates the sulfur content of the metal. The major conclusions included:1. Post combustion significantly reduces coal consumption but above 20% PCR little reduction of FeO to Fe can be performed with the off gas.2. Prereducing to FeO (Case I) and having as much post combustion as consistent with good heat transfer is an attractive process. This process only requires a simple pre reducer, uses less coal, and is relatively insensitive to the type of coal used.3. High off gas temperatures may pose a potential problem. The off gas temperature can be reduced by using an 02-Air mixture for post combustion, limiting post combustion or adding water to the gas.4. The use of CaC03 in place of CaO or of supplemental electricity does not appear attractive.5. The melting unit is theoretically an energy efficient scrap melter. For Case I using 200 kg of scrap as part of the charge the coal consumption decreases by about 80 kg.6. With PCR > 30% the FeO content of the slag is expected to be 2-5%, and the metal will not be saturated with carbon. These factors and the increased sulfur load since coal is the fuel indicate the sulfur content of the metal may exceed 0.25%"

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, as part of its mission to effect pollution abatement, conducted research to devise means for disposing of phosphatic clay wastes and reclaiming mined land. Part of the investigation was performed in a cooperative research project with 10 phosphate companies in Florida. The colloidal properties of the phosphatic clay suspensions, called slimes, make them difficult to dewater and dispose of without impoundment storage aboveground. Various reagents to flocculate and dewater these plant wastes were evaluated, and a polyethylene oxide polymer was found to function in a specialized flocculation dewatering technique. The flocculation dewatering method was investigated in bench-scale batch tests and applied in continuous dewatering tests using standard mineral-processing equipment. In continuous tests at feed rates of up to 58 liters per minute, wastes at 4 percent solids were dewatered to about 20 percent solids. About 0.8 kilogram of polymer was used for each metric ton of dry waste clay solids; processing time was about 4 minutes. Requirements for the treatment system are (1) proper mixing of the clay-waste feed and flocculant, (2) rapid removal of water as it is released, and (3) physical manipulation to promote cohesion of solids.

Wet scrubbing of fine coal from Thermal dryers poses a number of problems in adapting the gas cleaning equipment for required clean-up of the fine particulate matter. Among then are: 1. The dust In the gases leaving the Thermal dryer cyclone-s is often extremely fine with high percentages of the total dust loading less than one (1) micron in size. 2, The flue gas entering the scrubber is corrosive since the coal fired in the thermal dryer furnace is in the range of 0.7% by weight sulphur or higher. Therefore comparatively high cost stainless steel alloys or corrosion resistant linings are required for a satisfactory service life. 3. Requirements for residual coal loadings leaving the gas e scrubber are continually being lowered while modern coal preparation operation is imposing heavier burdens on the collection system through introduction into the Thermal dryer system of very fine coal previously not recovered. The advent of flotation systems in increasing numbers is typical of this trend 4. The installation of a scrubbing system on Thermal dryers is made primarily to reduce air pollution and product recovery value is of little or no value. Therefore the operating costs, that is, of gas pressure drop and water requirements must be held to a minimum.

INTRODUCTION Rock slope stability typically is governed by the geological discontinuities. This stability can be improved by drainage, unloading, adjustment in slope orientation, adjustment in slope angle, and also by reinforcement such as bolts or tendons. This paper addresses the modeling of bolt reinforcement in rock slopes. Most geological discontinuities such as joints have rough surfaces; they dilate during shear displacement. Their shear strength is characterized by two envelopes (Fig. 1); the peak envelope is distinct from the residual envelope when the joints can dilate. If the dilation is restrained transversely, such as with bolts, the normal stress will increase and the joint strength also will increase. It has been demonstrated that this increase may be considerable (Obert et al., 1976). The new normal stress at peak strength is a com- posite function of the properties of the rock mass and of the steel (Heuze, 1979). Hence, the dilation and its resultant effects on joint shear strength must be included in the analysis and design of the reinforcement. We present a model which can be used to perform such an analysis. Early studies of rock reinforcement in mining and civil applications (Lang, 1957 - Panek, 1962 - Osen and Parsons, 1966 - Lang, 19721, did not consider the specific effects of bolts on joint shear strength. In 1973, Heuze and Goodman reported direct shear tests on rough sandstone joints with bolts perpendicular to the joint plane (Fig. 2). RESULTS of investigation of corrosion-fatigue of metals at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station have been presented by the author in four papers. 1,2,3,4 In those papers references were given to the work of Haigh in 1917.5 The investigation at Annapolis included a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. To avoid confusion in later discussion, the term "endurance limit" will be restricted to mean the fatigue limit obtained by tests in air with specimens as free as possible from stress concentration and from corrosion. The endurance limit as thus obtained presumably represents an inherent property of the metal.

With the depletion of rich manganese ores, high-Fe content manganese ores are becoming the mainstream resources for manganese extraction. Reduction roasting-magnetic separation process is reported as a relatively effective route to realize the separation of manganese and iron. This study investigated the phase transformation of MnO2 and Fe2O3 briquettes (molar ratio 1:1) roasted under various temperatures and CO–CO2 atmospheres. Results showed that when the CO content was in the range of 0–10 vol%, MnxFe3−xO4 (x = 0−1) phase was formed and its content increased with the rising of temperature. The formation of ferromagnetic MnxFe3−xO4 with strong magnetism resulted in an inferior separation of manganese and iron by magnetization roasting-magnetic separation process. With the increase of CO content to over 25 vol%, the MnxFe3−xO4 content decreased while the content of feebly magnetic substance (MnO)y(FeO)1−y(y = 0−1) increased. Further increasing the CO content to over 80 vol%, (MnO)y(FeO)1−y was reduced to MnO and metallic iron.

The Bureau of Mines sponsored a study of the impact of changing technology on the demand for metallurgical coal and coke to 1985. Individual technologies were analyzed to determine what effect each had on the demand for and the consequent consumption of metallurgical coal and coke in the steel industry. The domestic steel industry demand for metallurgical coal and coke for the production of hot metal will probably increase through 1985. Formcoke if implemented on a worldwide basis could begin to supplant the U.S. export market for metallurgical coal. The major technologies that have contributed to the decline in demand for metallurgical coke per ton of hot metal are (1) the increased usage coupled with higher iron content of agglomerates, (2) modification of blast furnace practices such as high top pressures and blast temperatures, and (3) increases in the injection of supplemental fuels. The projected demand for metallurgical coal and coke under current technology for 1985 are 109.4 and 76.0 million tons, respectively. With future technology implemented, the demand for metallurgical coal and coke will be 82.0 and 56.9 million tons, respectively. The projected domestic demand for metallurgical coke could further decrease by as much as 15 to 20 million tons by 1985 if formcoking proves technologically and economically feasible.
