"THE HARDY MINE of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited is located in Lot 9, Concession 1, Levack Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, 20 miles northwest of the city of Sudbury, and a mile west of the town of Levack. The ore deposit is one of the many nickel-copper sulphide bodies found on, or near, the lower contact of the well-known Sudbury norite-micropegmatite irruptive, and is one of a family of ore deposits which occur on the northwest rim of the irruptive.The property was acquired by purchase in 1935. In the same year a magnetometer survey along the footwall contact of the norite, which is covered by about 150 feet of glacial sands and clays, first indicated the location of the orebody. Drilling from 1935 to 1942 outlined the extent of the ore. Shaft sinking was commenced in the fall of 1951, and the mine is now approaching full production at a rate of about 300,000 tons per year.There are several major differences between the geology of the Levack area and the Falcon bridge area, which lies at the opposite extremity of the irruptive, 28 miles to the east. The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features of the geology of the Levack area as seen in the Hardy mine, and to supplement the recent papers on other properties in the Sudbury area by Davidson (1), Lochhead (2), and Yates (3).General GeologyA recent review of the regional geology and an extensive bibliography of the Sudbury area can be found in the two papers by H. Fitchett (Johnstown, Pa.)—The fact stated by the authors that: "In the laboratory, without marked efficiency decreases, the authors have deposited zinc successfully from solutions containing as high as 1 g per liter of germanium," (p. 465, paragraph 3) is most unusual. A similar statement is made in the summary and conclusions: "Germanium alone, within normal operating limits does not cause large efficiency losses." The limits are not defined. These facts are directly contrary to much of the published history on the effect of germanium in zinc electrolysis. A description of the conditions leading to such a successful electrolysis would be of interest to all engaged in the production of electrolytic zinc. It is unfortunate that the authors of this paper did not determine the actual concentration of germanium and cadmium in the solutions which they electrolyzed after a zinc dust purification. This purification will take out a variable amount of these impurities, depending upon the composition of the dust, type of agitation, presence of activating agents, etc. Probably every electrolytic zinc plant in this country has accurate methods, both wet and spectrographic, for determining germanium and cadmium. These specific methods, adopted from the standard analytical literature, are often available to educational institutions for the asking. The headings of Fig. 2 and of the two tables, with their definite concentrations of germanium and cadmium (which are not so definite according to the footnotes) could possibly be somewhat misleading, since the actual amounts of germanium and cadmium present during electrolysis are not known. Even the 1 hr electrolysis time might be too short for a study of this type; 12 or 24 hr tests might be much better. Commercial solutions have been known that gave over 90 pct ampere efficiency during the first hour of electrolysis, but no metal at all after 24 hr.

It is eight years since I have been connected actively with metallography, but in this time I have been learning something about colloid chemistry, which may be considered as the chemistry of bubbles, drops, grains, filaments, and films, all things in which at least one dimension is very small or in which the surface is large relatively to the mass. Films, of course, suggest to the metallographist Beilby's amorphous film theory, about which I am going to speak for a while, though probably not in the way you expect. I come to bury Beilby, not to praise him. So far as I can judge from looking over the literature hastily, there are two schools in the United States, those who accept Beilby's theory willingly and those who accept it unwillingly. Hoytl says that: At present there seem to be two schools in metallography, one which has adopted the amorphous-phase theory for the explanation of the effect of cold work, mechanical deformation, etc., and one which is not ready at present to adopt this theory. It seems to me that this theory can at least be used as a convenient means of explaining various facts that are demonstrable in the laboratory but the presence of this amorphous material, through our lack of experimental means, we are unable to prove. That we have failed in this direction should not necessarily hinder us from using a theory as workable as this. Mathewson2 says: I have come reluctantly to believe in the amorphous theory, or some theory admitting a modification of the ordinary crystalline phase so as to permit differential properties with temperature, etc. If Mathewson represents one extreme, with Hoyt perhaps occupying a middle ground, H. M. Howe3 may be cited as one of the enthusiastic supporters of Beilby's amorphous theory. It is, says Howe:

Orano Canada Inc. (Orano) operates the McClean Lake mill in northern Saskatchewan, processing high concentration uranium ore, delivered in slurry form, from the Cameco operated Cigar Lake mine. This slurry is ultimately processed into the purified uranium oxide product known as calcined yellowcake. During the calcining process, sulphate (SO42-) entrained in the yellowcake undergoes thermal decomposition into sulphur dioxide (SO2). SO2 is a colourless gas that poses health and safety risks. Since 2016, an anhydrous ammonia dosing system was successfully added to the existing Venturi particulate scrubber system to provide efficient removal of SO2 from the calciner off-gas. Within the pH controlled scrubber solution, SO2 exists in a pH dependent equilibrium with sulphite/bisulphite (SO32-/ HSO3-). The presence of a significant fraction of reduced sulphite and bisulphite in mill solutions presents a hazard in downstream circuits. Should these solutions drop in pH, either through natural oxidation or inadvertent mixing with low pH solutions, the solution equilibrium will shift from SO32-/HSO3- in favour of SO2, resulting in the evolution of SO2 gas from any liquid surfaces. In 2018, Hatch Ltd. (Hatch) and Orano implemented a design change in the calciner scrubber system. Blowdown from this system is now treated in an oxidation pre-step utilizing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and anhydrous ammonia (NH3) for pH control, in order to convert the residual sulphite/bisulphite present in solution to stable ammonium sulphate product. This paper will detail some of the challenges and actions undertaken to minimize SO2 risk, culminating in the recent introduction of a novel system designed to oxidize sulphite/bisulphite and prevent mobilization from the calciner scrubber solution into other mill areas where there is the potential for acidification and SO2 release.

"Water plays a key role in mineral processing plants and to process one ton of ore 2.5 ton water is needed. Thickeners are commonly used for dewatering and recovering water in most processing plants. The underflow pulp density is increased by sedimentation of particles and clear water is recovered from the overflow. One of the issues related with using the process water is the presence of suspended fine particles in the clear overflow water which can create blockage in transfer pipes. The froth formed on top of thickeners is the main cause of this problem. In this study, a method to decrease the froth formed on the Sarcheshmeh Cu-Mo thickener surface was introduced and implemented. At the first stage, the old punched plate feedwell was removed and it was replaced by a vane type feedwell. A spray water ring using fish-tail type nozzles was then installed to break froth layers by water. These modifications led to 63% relative reduction in the water turbidity, 11% relative increase in the underflow solids concentration, 20% relative reduction in torque, 19% relative reduction in its standard deviation and an increase of 6% in water recovery.INTRODUCTION The Sarcheshmeh copper complex, the largest copper producer in Iran, located in southern Iran. In the processing plants of this complex, over 250,000 m3 of water is consumed daily. Because of a lack of water in this area and very low yearly rain fall (150 mm), water plays a vital role in the complex. As a result, it is then aimed at maximum water recovery by taking all necessary measures. The recycled water in order to be used should not contain any suspended solids indicated by low turbidity."

"Effects of pouring temperature and cooling water flux on solidification structure of ferritic stainless steel are investigated with a thermal simulation setup. The results show that with pouring temperatures 1518° C, 1528° C, 1538° C and 1548° C, both Lmean (the mean length between columnar to equiaxed transition(CET) position and chill surface of the samples) and the mean dimension of equiaxed grains increase. On the other hand, with cooling water flux 400, 800, 1200 and 1600mL/min, Lmean gradually increases, and the mean dimension of equiaxed grains decreases. In addition, low pouring temperature and cooling water flux enlarge the ratio of fine equiaxed grains.IntroductionFerritic stainless steel plays an important role in industry products nowadays. Compared with austenitic stainless steel which contains both chromium and nickel, ferritic stainless steel can obtain good corrosion resistance despite the absence of nickel [ 1]. F erritic stainless steel has been widely applied in automotive exhaust systems [2], electrical equipment, construction and chemical industries and also has broad development prospects. At present, continuous casting technique has developed into an important technology applied in iron and steel making. The solidification structure of continuous casting slab has significant influence on the final properties of stainless steel. The developed columnar grains of ferritic stainless steel would result in negative effects on mechanical property [3]. However, fine and homogeneou& equiaxed grains can improve the comprehensive properties of ferritic stainless steel [4] Therefore, it makes great sense to promote the columnar to equiaxed grain transition (CET). Recently Baosteel has developed a new type of Cr-saved ferritic stainless steel, but the effect of continuous casting conditions on its solidification structure is unknown. It is important to investigate the effects of solidification conditions on solidification structure of this new ferritic stainless steel, which can give guidance for optimizing the production process."

"Most coal supply contracts include strict limitations on the moisture content of the products. This limitation exists because of calorific, transport cost, and handling reasons. Managing the retention time on product stockpiles to facilitate drainage commonly controls the moisture content in coarser coal products. A large-scale pilot rig has been commissioned to facilitate research in this regard. A stockpile of about 15 tonnes of a typical washed power station feed coal from the South African Witbank coalfield was loaded onto a 6 x 6 m platform on load cells. The platform was shielded from the elements, like rain and wind, and an artificial rain sprinkler system was installed. A variety of rainfall intensities and durations were simulated and the water accumulation and run-off was measured. The material was also sampled for moisture and particle size before and after the series of tests. At the same time, the drainage characteristics of the same coal were determined in smaller scale drainage columns for comparison. Data is presented in this paper on the drainage rates, maximum accumulated moisture, final moisture, and the effect of evaporation. The results showed that for all rainfall patterns tested, drainage ceased after 2 - 3 days, but evaporation continued for at least the time period under investigation, albeit at a low rate. Evaporation contributed to dewatering at rates that depended on wind, temperature and humidity conditions. This caused a slow reduction in moisture content even after the run-off had ceased. The value of the final moisture depended on the coal PSD. It was also found that the intensity and duration of the more intense rainfall events did not significantly affect the maximum water accumulation, with drainage rates equaling the corresponding water addition rates which suggested that water ran off over the surface of the stockpile with limited penetration. During more intense rainfall scenarios, some penetration was apparent."

THE iron mines of Spain are located on the mountain ridge forming the boundary between the, Teruel and Guadalajara provinces, called Sierra Menera. They form a property of 25 mines extending over an area of 1,677 hectares (4,140 acres) situated at a height varying from 1,200 m. (3,940 ft.) to 1,500 m. (4,920 ft.) above sea level. The deposit follows the direction north to south; huge masses of ore are being found both on the slopes and at the summit of the Sierra. The ore occurs among quartzites and magnesite limestone, in some places overlaid by quartzite 15 in. (50 ft.) thick; in some others (and this is more general) the ore is overlaid by earth and boulders of quartzite origin,; this layer is about 8 m. (26 ft.) thick. The ore beds occupy the geological horizon of the Superior Trias or Muschelkask, which are here in direct contact with the Silurian quartzites. The lime-stones have been more or less transformed. There is ample evidence to show that these mines were worked in very ancient times-objects and tools employed in mining by the ancient Romans and Arabs are to be found plentifully in old workings which extend down into the deposits. It has been estimated that more than 10,000,000 tons of ore were mined in the old days in this district and carried to the primitive forges in the vicinity where iron of much renown in Spain was extracted. Remains of more than 20 of these forges are found in the neighborhood of Sierra Menera and are usually situated near waterfalls and forests. Much investigation has been carried on for the purpose of determining the quantity of ore to be found in these mines, but no exact calculations can be made at present. When the investigation is completed it will surely be found that the deposit contains a much larger quantity than the 100,000,000 tons indicated by the present workings.

"In cooperation with the New York and New Jersey State Bridge and Tunnel Commissions, the Bureau of Mines has just completed the construction of an experimental tunnel in the Bureau's experimental mine at Bruceton, Pa., near Pittsburgh, Pa. The purpose of this tunnel is to make a final study of the ventilation problems arising in the adequate ventilation of vehicular tunnels for automobiles and trucks, especially the 9000-foot tubes that are being designed. to handle the traffic between New York City and New Jersey under the Hudson River.Chief engineer, Clifford M. Holland, of the Tunnel Commissions has shown that there are three principal problems involved in planning the ventilation of this tunnel, namely - (1) The amount and composition of exhaust gases from motor vehicles; (2) The dilution necessary to render these exhaust gases harmless; (3) Determination of coefficients of airflow and horse-power required in ducts, bends and openings.Composition of automobile exhaust gases.The answer to the first problem was obtained by making road tests on 101 automobiles and trucks at the Pittsburgh experiment station. These machines were taken from service without any previous adjustment so that the composition and amount of the exhaust gas may be taken as representative of actual operating conditions prevailing in the tunnel. A report covering the results of these tests was submitted to the chief engineer of the Tunnel Commissions, on November 1, 1920, and 411 be published in the report of the commissions. Several papers a have also been published in the technical journals summarizing the important results as regards tunnel ventilation and also with reference to gasoline losses in present-day motor car operation due to the general use of unnecessarily rich mixtures"

An MPSI KW-20 Tower mill has been tested at the Butte Molybdenum plant of Anaconda Minerals Company, as a substitute for the conventional 1.5x3.0 m (5x10 ft) tumbling ball mill currently used for regrind purposes. The Tower mill was operated in both open and closed continuous circuits. These results were complemented with a series of batch grinding tests to determine some of the operational features of this mill. The relative grinding efficiency of the Tower mill with respect to the tumbling ball mill was determined and the applicability of this new mill to a plant/heavy duty environment was assessed. Experimental results obtained on the regrind of moly concentrates indicate that approximately 40% energy savings can be realized by using the Tower mill instead of the ball mill.

With the promising development of new technologies, automation in Drill and Blasting (D&B) is on the horizon. The data generated in all D&B activities, which is currently segregated, can be linked to become information and carry a logical meaning. This information can be used to identify critical activities and make decisions regarding corrective measures to accomplish the goals of D&B. Minera Caserones, supporting Alert2Gain (A2G), and Dyno Nobel, has been working on the development of a quality assurance and quality control (QAQC), system for the mine involving all D&B activities. The main variables in the model for D&B include data from the geology of the deposit, drilling, explosive products, and material loading, among others. To create the model, the mine is divided into blasting polygons. Those polygons are part of a block model. The block model is assembled following different rules, such as: • Block sizes of 4m x 4m x 15m, • Classification of the blocks to a particular blasting polygon using a geospatial intersection algorithm, • Algorithms connect all the pieces of data automatically with the minimum of human intervention and populate the block model, Because measuring data for each block is impossible, another set of rules and algorithms completes the model. Dyno Nobel generates an essential set of data for the QAQC system. Explosive truck loading rates and explosive products, among other data, are also included in the system. The system autogenerates reports every hour, and a summary of the results of each mining day (a mining shift of 12 hours) is distributed by email to all responsible persons to identify the critical tasks and then to make the proper adjustments to accomplish the goals of D&B. The information is updated every hour and available through a dashboard for easy and straightforward interpretation. This paper explains the conceptual details of the QAQC system implemented in Minera Caserones, how the data is aggregated automatically from the different sources, shows examples of the type of information in the dashboard, and presents a successful case where a deviation was detected, and the corrective measures that were implemented to keep the performance of the D&B activity. The paper finally discusses the next steps toward an autonomous D&B system based on new AI technologies, with minimum human intervention.

Sichuan province is the richest province for its waterpower resource in China, perfectly suited to develop a high consuming energy industry. Sichuan Aostar Group Company has two Aluminum smelters, Guangyuan Aostar smelter and Sichuan Aostar Smelter. The production capacity of Aostar Group was 240,000 tons in 2004. The construction scale of Sichuan Aostar Aluminum smelter is 250,000 tons per year. The first 168 GY-300KA pre-baked anode cells (125,000 tons/year) were put into production in 2003. This company has taken the lead in the use of the transfer gantry technology in China. Besides making the process of calibration the pot shell it has concentrated the efforts to construct cell lining elsewhere. This company also has taken the lead in China for using the EIRICH force mixing and cooling technology as well as in the world for the CP Company?s vertical ball mill technology that produces the pre-baked anodes. The carbon anode system completed its 190,000 tons/year production scale. This is the most advanced technology and the biggest scale pre-baking anode manufacture in China. Since the Sichuan Aostar 300KA cell was put into production, it runs normally and smoothly. Up to now the current efficiency is higher than 94% and the specific energy is only 13300kWh/T-Al.

The phenomena of liquation in steel or iron ingots of all sizes, but naturally to greatest extent in the heaviest ingots, have been noticed ever since the commencement on a large scale of the Besse mer and open-hearth manufactures; but they have been studied with care during the last few years only. The English and the Ameri cans were the first to publish the results of investigation upon phe nomena of this clam, to which they have given the name of segregation. Historical. Passing by that which has been written concerning the segregation observed in gray pig-iron, of which instances were given by Karsten, we shall confine ourselves here to that which is known of this subject with exclusive reference to ingot steel and iron. Mr. H. M. Howe, of Boston, in his Metallurgy of Steel, the most complete and well-arranged treatise upon steel, gives a resume of observations, with the results of numerous analyses, bearing upon the phenomena of segregation. According to Tchernoff (with whom we discussed this question at length in 1878, in connection with the cast-steel plates of large dimensions designed for the Italian fleet, which we showed him at Terre-Noire), Kalakoutsky called attention in 1866 to the lack of homogeneity in Bessemer ingots, especially when cast in sand. Our own attention had been called to the phenomena of liquation in 1868 by a somewhat surprising fact which appeared in almost every one of a number of steel-rail ingots coming from the works of Messrs. Pierre and Emile Martin at Sireuil, to be rolled at TerreNoire. The Gatineau shaft described in this paper was an excavation of about 38 m diameter and 21 m depth constructed in Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River just north of Ottawa, Ontario. A large sewage lift pumping station-was to be constructed in this excavation. Subcontractor for the shaft excavation and initial support was Beaver Underground Structures Ltd., of Dorval, Quebec. Mr. William C. Cox of Beaver conceived the idea for the support system used in this excavation, and was responsible for the construction activities. Initial analysis and design concepts for the lining system were developed by Mr. Ronald E. Heuer. Detailed lining design and construction monitoring were the responsibility of Mr. Jean-Michel Loignon. Geologic conditions indicated by two borings within the shaft area are illustrated in Fig. 1. The shaft excavation would be in the sensitive Leda silty clay. The clay is of stiff to very stiff consistency, with an insitu vane shear strength averaging about 115 KPa (2400 psf) and a reported low value of about 87 KPa (1820 psf). Low strength values were from the middle of the clay layer, with higher strengths at the top and bottom. Average shear strength at the level of the base of the excavation was about 137 KPa (2860 psf). Remolded vane shear strength averaged about 20 KPa (420 psf), with a reported low of 13 KPa (270 psf). Based upon average strength values, the clay sensitivity is 5.8. The clay has an average water content of 53% (range 43 to 66%), which is near its liquid limit (average 56%). The clay unit weight is about 1760 kg/m3 (110 pcf). Underlying the shaft site at shallow depth is limestone bedrock within which the piezometric head is approximately equal to the original ground surface elevation. For shaft support, a -cast-in-place concrete wafer system was considered, but was discarded because of time restrictions imposed by concrete placement and curing. Highly concentrated pastes of gold nanoparticles were successfully produced by use of a special kind of protective polymer and a mild reductant. Solid part of the pastes consists of up to 85wt% of gold nanoparticles, 10~30 nm in diameter, and residual protective polymer. This component can be diluted by any kinds of solvent at arbitrary rates. Electronics, optics, catalysts, colorants and surface metal coatings are possible application fields. 1. Introduction Noble metal nanoparticles are of interest in a variety of fields ? such as colorants, metal coatings, electronics(1), optics(2), and chemical catalysis(3). Especially, in the color field, the gold nanoparticle has been known as an aesthetic red colorant for stained glass and fine glassware, such as Venetian glass. The mechanism of coloring is attributed to surface plasmon absorption of gold nanoparticles(4,5). The gold nanoparticle in stained glass shows very clear red color, which is very durable for hundreds years. On the other hand, the red color of organic pigment in paint films often fades away within several years. We intended to reproduce the elegant and stable coloring of stained glass in paint films. In order to color a very thin, 20~50?m, paint film like stained glass, production of highly concentrated dispersion of gold nanoparticle is necessary. To achieve this, there were two issues to be overcome. One is how to prevent the coagulation of gold nanoparticles in highly concentrated solution. So far, several methods to prepare gold nanoparticles(6,7) were reported. But only a few methods succeeded to stabilize the gold nanoparticle dispersion at higher concentration than ppm order. The other is controlling of the particle size, this is because the color of gold nanoparticles is very sensitive to the particle size. Only when the particle size lies around 10 nm, the suspension exhibits red color like stained glass.

The effectiue distriblltion coefficient has been Measured in a series of vertical, normal freezing experirtzents with large current densities passing through the solid-liquid interface. The results indicate that the effect of the current on solute redistribution is due to electvotransport in the liquid. The high currents produced extensive mixing in the liquid which was considerably reduced by solidifying in small lubing. Analysis of the convection indicates that it probably vesulls from a horizontal temperature gradient produced by the Joule heating- of the electvic crirver~t. Due to the strong dependence of this convection upon the specimen radius, it is conclnded that only for specit~ens with radii of less than somewhere between 1 and 2 mm wilt electric field freezing be getlerally effec-tire at enhancing the purification of zone-melting experittierats in loe-melting alloys. Experiments on 0.8-mm lubes illustrate some interesting potential applications of this techniqne as a means of solute control on smcrll specimens. In a number of papers published within the last few years'-4 it has been found that passage of large dc currents through the solid-liquid interface of a freezing alloy produces a change in the solute redistribution accompanying the solidification. It had been predicted theoretically by Hucke et al.s and by Pfann and Wagner that such an effect would occur as the result of electrotransport within the liquid boundary layer at the solid-liquid interface. These authors independently derived the following relation between the effective distribution coefficient and the variables of the process: Where k0 is the equilibrium distribution coefficient, V is the mobility of the solute relative to the solvent, E is the electric field intensity, D is the solute diffusion coefficient, R is the rate of interface motion, and 6 is the boundary layer thickness. Both groups of authors show that this equation predicts the possibility of extending the purification ability of zone-melting experiments by the addition of an electric current. However, there are other effects in addition to electro-transport which could be produced by the high dc current and might, perhaps, invalidate the applicability of Eq. [I]. For example, high electric current might affect the interface reaction or perhaps the equilibrium distribution which was assumed to exist at the interface. It was the purpose of this work to determine the applicability of Eq. [I] by systematically investigating a simple system for which all of the necessary parameters were known. It was of particular interest for speculating on the potential usefulness of this technique to determine the maximum practical field intensities obtainable, and the effect of these high fields upon convective mixing in the liquid. The initial work in this study was published in a previous paper3 which will be referred to as I. In that work, a current density of 2000 amps per sq cm was used with specimen diameters of 5 mm. The results gave a qualitative confirmation of Eq. [I.], and also showed that a large amount of convective mixing was produced in the liquid by the current. The present study is an extension of that work to smaller specimen diameters and higher current densities. Two points were overlooked in I and will be emphasized here: a) the value of ko has not been well-established in the Sn-Bi system and b) the observed convection could be due to thermal convection produced from the Joule heating. EVALUATION OF k0 To evaluate Eq. [ I.] it is necessary to know the value of the equilibrium distribution coefficient, k,. Tn I the value of k, was taken as 0.3 from a published phase diagram.7 According to ansen' the best data on the phase boundaries of the Sn-Bi system are those of Davidson.5 The data of Davidson give a k, value ranging from 0.21 to 0.25 for the compositions studied in this work, or an average value of around 0.23. In a recent publication, Rigaud and Tougas'10 determined ko by means of a solidification technique. For an alloy of approximately the same composition as that used in this work they obtained a ko value of 0.39. Hence, there is considerable uncertainty in the value of ko and, consequently, a series of experiments were made to determine k, more accurately.

This paper applies geostatistical tools in Measure While Drilling (MWD)data to estimate the probability distribution of values in all the points of the studied domain in order to assess the continuity of rock classes between boreholes. The analyses carried out by Ghosh et al.(2018) and Navarro et al.(2019) have been used as starting point of this work to classify the geotechnical rock condition in four classes: solid rock, fractured rock, cave-in rock and cavity. From it, an application for the geotechnical rock condition of ore bodies have been developed, aiming at characterizing the rock before the charging the holes to minimize unexpected rock conditions and to address issues associated with charging and blasting operations. Such problems are closely related with non-optimal rock fragmentation after blasting. The procedure has been applied in the geotechnical block model results obtained from Navarro et al.(2019)’s work in the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB’s (LKAB) Malmberget underground iron ore mine, Sweden. Navarro et al.(2019)’s model was developed based on102 fan-holes from five ore bodies and extrapolated to the full-scale in20 drifts with 5600 fan-holes from two orebodies. A multi-step transformation of the MWD parameters was carried out in order to minimize external influences other than the rock mass. The study shows the calculations of the variogram and kriging estimation in the 3D domain for six ring-blasts, from one of the ore bodies studied in Navarro et al. (2019)’s work to assess the continuity of the rock classes along the six ring-blasts in a 3D mapping model. For that, intermediate rings between the measured ones from the MWD have been estimated. The probability distribution of values in the entire domain of rings with measured samples has been plotted together with the rock classes identified by the blasthole paths. The results show high accuracy in the matching between the kriging and the values given by the MWD data, allowing to visualize smooth trends of different rock classes along the ring. The representation of the 3D mapping model for the six ring-blast shows clear fractured and cave-in zones developed along the drift that correspond to zones with geotechnical problems found, as from internal reports.

The Kitsault molybdenum deposit lies along the east margin of thecoast Batholith Complex near the head of the fiord of Alice Arm. It is 800 km (497 miles) northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia. The deposit is located on Lime Creek 8 km (5 miles) from the coast on a wide dissected upland valley at an elevation of 600 m (1969 ft). It is an area of coastal rain forest with high annual precipitation and extremely high winter snowfall. Although the area is of high relief, outcrops are largely restricted to ridges and canyons. Most of the area is covered by the coastal vegetation or wet swampy upland areas. The south edge of the molybdenum deposit was exposed in a sharp canyon; however, outcrops over the remainder of the deposit were largely restricted to a few small exposures of resistant hornfels. The mineralization is related to an elliptical porphyry stock of 52.3 m.y. age which intrudes argillites and microgreywackes of the Late Jurassic Bowser Group. A circular zone of alteration, with a diameter of about 700 m (2297 ft), occurs in the north end of the stock and the molybdenite mineralization is concentrated in the outer parts of this zone of alteration. Thus, the northern part of the mineralization occurs partly in the hornfels and partly in the stock, whereas the southern side of the ring of mineralization cuts across the middle of the stock. Zoning within this system includes a central circular area of almost complete replacement of quartz plus K- feldspar and this grades sharply outward into a phyllic zone. Clay alteration is largely localized along late faults. The ring of molybdenite mineralization is partly overlapped and partly surrounded by a zone of pyrite mineralization. Some chalcopyrite is coextensive with the pyrite zone. Late polymetallic veins fill two conjugate fracture sets. These quartz veins contain galena, pyrite, some chalcopyrite, and a number of lead-bismuth sulfosalts.

Are the results of an exploration program worth the cost? This is a question I suspect many of you are familiar with and, theoretically at least, it is an easy question to answer. The answer, of course, lies in comparing the future earnings stream the program is expected to generate, to the present value of the cost of carrying it out. While historical costs can be determined without much difficulty, estimating the value of a future earnings stream involves all sorts of assumptions regarding future costs, metal prices, inflation rates and an appropriate discount factor; and in the context in which the question arises, requires additional assumptions about mineral deposits which have yet to be discovered. As a practical matter, this kind of approach isn't likely to produce a very convincing answer; certainly not one convincing enough to satisfy a skeptical audience; nor one likely to temper the illusions of recent converts to mineral exploration, who are convinced that if enough money is spent, profitable discoveries will inevitably follow. Within broad limits, however, I believe it is possible to analyze the costs and results of gold exploration in the U.S.A. over the past 20 odd years in a useful manner. And while such an analysis is imperfect, it will provide some insight into this fascinating subject.
