As an occupational culture, mining comes with its own set of rules, agendas and values. Yet mines often also operate in the traditional territories of indigenous communities, with whom specific agreements are negotiated that commit to respect culture, economy and environment. Mines in these locations employ extremely diverse workforces whose value systems often come into conflict in on-the-job relationships. Adaptation of individual worker attitudes and industrial operating culture thus both need to occur if there is to be the negotiation of a workable relationship. This paper will discuss ways that NWT diamond mines have adapted to their workforce, to ensure that rights and cultures of their diverse workforce can be respected. Historically, the concept of culture has been dealt with solely through the forum of ?cross-cultural? workshops. Gibson presents a model of a new type of ?cultural-engagement? workshop based on the top ten cross-cultural conflicts that actually arise at a remote mine-site. This model helps managers, team leaders, and workers to tackle in-mine conflicts that arise based on differing value systems of aboriginal and non-aboriginal workers and management. In addition, Gibson suggests that the concept of culture must be more rigorously applied throughout the mine structure and not discussed only in the forum of the cross-cultural workshop.

OCAW appreciates the opportunity given to us by the sponsors of this Conference to present our position and policies on the issue of radiation hazards in mining. Our principal concern is the health impact that the mining of uranium has on our members. OCAW represents 1,500 underground uranium miners and more than 10,000 underground miners with 3,000 in the Rocky Mountain region. The U.S. Public Health Service has determined through mortality studies that the number one cause of death among uranium miners is lung cancer. It was also determined that exposure to radon daughters and mine dust correlates with the lung cancer experience of uranium miners. Data from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration has also shown that not only uranium underground miners, but all underground miners, are exposed to radon daughters -- especially underground miners in the Rocky Mountain region. It is our position that any OCAW underground miner is at potential lung cancer risk. The dosages of radon daughters that our miners are exposed to are very many times the background levels of radon exposures in the communities where they live. We are also aware that cigarette smoking accelerates the onset of lung cancer; however, it has to be clear that the available scientific evidence shows that alpha radiation does initiate lung cancer and that cigarette smoke, as a recognized co-carcinogen, promotes cancer already initiated by radiation. It is true that cigarette smoke increases the risk of cancer significantly for miners exposed to radon, but nonsmoking miners have experienced lung cancer rates twice as high as the comparable members of the U.S. population. OCAW's position is that the occupational regulatory agencies should concentrate on the exposures that can be controlled; that is, occupational exposures rather than life-style exposures. Our Union has maintained a consistent posture in relation to carcinogens in the workplace -- that is, exposure to cancer-causing agents should be limited to the [lowest feasible level]. OCAW has interpreted lowest feasible level as the lower limit of detection of the collection and analytical method used to detect the carcinogen. Our posture is based on the available scientific information on carcinogenesis. We have asked the scientific community, many times, to provide us with safe levels of exposure to carcinogenic substances, including radon daughters. The answer has been: "We cannot determine levels of exposure low enough to assure that no cancer will occur." In short, there is not a "safe threshold" for any carcinogen. This statement does not come from one of the few so-called "pro-labor scientists," it comes from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. I don't need to be a scientific sage, then, to conclude that the lowest level of exposure corresponds to the lowest risk of developing cancer. That is, then, our policy on exposure to carcinogens. It seems there has been an attempt to ignore the fact that lung cancer in uranium miners is the principal cause of death. Uranium miners are no exception from workers exposed to carcinogens. Our policy applies to them. Uranium miners should be exposed to the lowest feasible level of radon daughters and any decrease in the permissible exposure level is a decrease in their lung cancer risk. Accordingly, OCAW has petitioned the Department of Labor for a new permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in uranium mining, which lowers the current exposure standard from 4 Working Level Months (WLM) per year to 0.7 Working Level Months per year. We made our demand to the Department of Labor on April 20, 1980. We are still awaiting action from the Federal Government on our petition. OCAW is also very concerned with other important health impacts of uranium mining. We are concerned with a rate of disabling accidents and fatalities which is twice as high as the same rate in other underground mines, excluding coal. We are also concerned with the rate of respiratory disease fatalities among uranium miners which is almost four times the rate among a comparable U.S. population. We have expressed those concerns when the U.S. Senate proposed a Federal Compensation Act for uranium miners. That proposal, by Senator Dominici of New Mexico, found a quiet death in two Congressional sessions. In conclusion, our position on lung cancer induced by radon daughters is the same position we have taken with all other industrial carcinogens: The lower the exposure, the lower the risk. OCAW is demanding a drastic decrease of the permissible exposure limits. OCAW will never accept that a segment of our membership which mines uranium should take the lion's share of the risk while the uranium mining companies take all the benefits.

This paper gives the derivation of a practical formula for the calculation of slopes in seismic reflection prospecting. The derived formula is an approximation and can be used where the slope of the reflecting horizon is less than 250 ft. per 1000 and the depth to the reflecting horizon is greater than 2500 ft. The slope of sediments in oil regions is generally considerably less than 250 ft. per 1000. This is particularly true of the Gulf Coast, with the exception of the salt domes, which usually have the sediments at a greater slope than 260 ft. per 1000. "IntroductionIn respect to The Human Dimension by M. Phyllis Bray, this author's impression is that research on long distance commuting (LDC) is long overdue. This type of mining is not new to many workers, especially those from areas such as the Maritimes, who have had to look for work away from their families for at least a decade. Perhaps to the industry the over-all set-up is new, but to workers who have faced mine shut-downs in their areas finding a job was the main objective and if the security of long-term employment was evident, then the families might join them later. This was the situation with which the writer' s family was faced.LDC LifestyleBeing the wife of an underground miner, the author has personally experienced this lifestyle for almost 10 years, and has never experienced accommodation in a company town. The first five years of marriage were spent in a small rural municipality within 50 miles of the worksite, but the town had industry separate from mining and was not affected by the mine shut-down.Since her LDC lifestyle began her family has been pretty much city-based, out-of-province commuters with two children and a third to arrive some years later. She therefore lived a fairly normal married life with a husband home daily. The author has experienced life with a husband who worked away for five-day stretches and then drove long distances to be home weekends or the portion of time left over from driving and fatigue. She has done the 3D-days in/l4-days out routine, and for approximately the past four years has been existing on a two-weeks in/two-weeks out ritual .The author does not agree that the ""bottom line is that mining families go where the jobs are"" . The miners go where the jobs are and the families fend for themselves with the assistance of the pay cheque making it home each pay period.Perhaps because there are many personal frustrations with this type of lifestyle, perceptions may be inaccurate. Having only dealt with underground operations, there may be gross differences between the pressures and demands of other forms of mining."

A computer program has been developed that produces graphic representations of the atomic structure of any crystallographic plane of a mineral. The information provided by the program relates to a purely geometrical model of the crystal structure in which each atom is represented solely by the x, y and z coordinates of its centre. Despite its simplicity, the program can be used as a first approximation model in studies of the interaction between mineral processing reagents and the surfaces of mineral grains which are assumed to be coincident with cleavage planes.

The development by the U. S. Bureau of Mines of a process for purifying manganese by electrolysis has stimulated interest in manganese alloys. While recent publications have shown some alloys of manganese and copper to possess rather unusual properties, none have included information on tensile properties, which have an important bearing on the usefulness of the alloys. Manganese-copper alloys can be heat-treated, since the single phases that exist at high temperatures may be retained by quenching. According to Persson,1 when quenched alloys containing from about 30 to nearly IOO per cent manganese are reheated, alpha manganese is precipitated (Fig. I). Calculations based on Persson's X-ray data indicate that this decomposi-tion is accompanied by a change in volume of as much as ; per cent. The reason that this large volume change has not been noted probably is the slow rate at which equilibrium is reached by these alloys. In an investigation on hardening by cold-work and heat-treatment, Dean and Anderson3 found that quenched alloys increase in hardness with manganese content and that high-manganese alloys harden very slowly with cold-work, while high-copper alloys harden much more rapidly. Heat-treatment has little effect on manganese-copper alloys containing less than 40 per cent Mn, and affects those alloys containing more than 40 per cent in accordance with their manganese content and heat-treating temperature. Dean and Anderson4 also found that cold-work increased electrical resistance of alloys containing from 50 to 80 per cent Mn, and that heat-treatment of alloys containing from 40 to 96 per cent Mn altered the electrical resistance considerably. Dean, Anderson and Potter6 have shown that the high vibration damping capacity that characterizes manganese-copper alloys containing 40 to go per cent Mn is affected by cold-work and heat-treatments. Highest vibration damping capacity at low stresses was obtained by heating for 2 hr. at 450°C. (842°F.) after quenching from solution temperatures. Preparalion of Alloys.—The alloys for these tests were melted in a 17-lb. basic-lined high-frequency induction furnace using electrolytic manganese, grade A ingot copper and a 70-30 CU-Mn master alloy (69.80 per cent Cu, 0.12 Fe, 0.04 Si, 0.006 S, 0.07 C, balance Mn). The manganese was heated slowly to expel excess dissolved gases and melted before the addition of copper. No fluxes or covers were used. The melts were cast in tapered iron molds and the ingots were reduced go per cent when forged to 1/2-in. rounds. "With the increasing acceptance of the Thixoforging process in the last few years, also the technical and commercial requirements for this forming technology and its components increased. So far, a great deal of work has been done in the development of an efficient process and control design. However, less attention has been paid to the development of new specifically tailored aluminum wrought alloys for this specific manufacturing process. · In this paper a new AlMgSi-alloy (A6082), optimized for the Thixoforging process, is presented. In the first part, the technical potential of the new alloy is specified by its microstructural evolution and flow characteristics in the semi-solid state. In the second part, the mechanical properties of thixoforged components of different conventional AlMgSi-alloys a (e illustrated · and compared to the new alloy.IntroductionSemi-solid metalworking, also known as semi-solid forming, is a hybrid manufacturing method that incorporates elements of both casting and forging. The key to the process relies on the peculiar flow behavior of slurries containing non-dendritic solid, which was first studied at the MIT by Flemings et al. [i], in the early 1970s. It was discovered, that if an alloy is uniformly stirred during freezing, discrete rounded particles of solid are formed rather than the normal dendrites, and the slurry is highly fluid (-5 Pas) up at least 50% solid. In addition, these slurries posses thixotropic flow characteristics: the viscosity is dependent on sheare rate and time. The more vigorously they are stirred, the more fluid they become. However, on standing the viscosity recovers and the material stiffens (-106 Pas).The semi-solid forming process exploits this phenomenon. In a first step, the required non-dentritical- microstructure is obtained by mechanical or electromagnetic stirring during primary solidification of the alloy. The stirred slurry is generally fully solidified as a feedstock billet and - in a second process step - reheated above the solidus temperature into the semi-solid state. In this condition, the thixotropic properties permit the material to be handled by robotic devices and transferred to a die (Thixocasting) or subjected to- a forming process by means of forging (Thixoforging). Owing to the shear stress which acts on the semisolid material during forming operation, the viscosity of the material is reduced attaining so the desired fluid-like flow characteristics."

Copper concentrate particles of 200 to 300 mesh size were fed from the top of vertical reaction tube of 2.8 cm ID and 2 m long with an O2-N2 gas mixture. The reaction tube was heated to 900 K to 1100 K. The residence time of the particles in the reaction tube was about 1 second. The copper concentrate particles were very rapidly oxidized and melted down during their descent in the reaction tube. The particle temperature were calculated by combining an un-reacted core model, mass transfer between gas and particles, and heat transfer between gas, particles and tube wall. The particle temperature reached its maximum within a distance of 60 cm from the top of reaction tube, and it attained at 2000 K at higher oxygen partial pressure. The most particles were melted at the oxygen partial pressure above 20 kPa. An appreciable amount of As, Sb and Pb in the concentrate particles was eliminated in the upper portion of the reaction tube and the rate of elimination are explained by the rate of mass transfer of volatilized species through the gas film on the particle surface and the variation of particle temperature during the descent.

Para se chegar ao padrão diversas etapas necessitam ser cumpridas para se ter um resultado confiável e uma ferramenta de trabalho acessível e de fácil entendimento pelos operadores do laminador. A Engenharia de Processos cuida de todas as etapas deste trabalho e também adota métodos para que o processo de produção se mantenha estável e com boa produtividade.

Reserves of Lake Superior Manganiferous Iron Ores Appendix-to paper by CARL ZAPFFE, presented at the Cleveland Meeting and issued, as Pamphlet No. 1664-C, with MINING AND METALLURGY, May, 1927. The author has made several test calculations on the basis of manganese units that are and may be involved. These are summarized here, as follows: On the basis of ore produced since 1902, the average annual requirement of manganese units would be 91,000 tons; on the basis of the production of the past 4 or 5 years, the requirement would be 145,000 tons; on the basis of the year 1925 only, the requirement would be 155,000 tons. Applying the percentage of increase for the next 20 years, as determined by the plat shown as Fig. 3, the total requirement for 20 years would be 3,254,000 to 3,572,000 tons, if one used either 145,000 tons or 155,000 tons as a starting point. We have the following interesting facts: (1) The Michigan ores contain only about one-half the manganese that the Cuyuna ore does; (2) the Cuyuna district now produces one-half the ore required; (3) the known tonnage of Cuyuna reserves is greater than the speculative reserve offered for Michigan; (4) at the present rate of production considered by tons, Michigan ores ought to be exhausted in 20 years or less while Cuyuna ores would last up to 44 years. We should now reduce the estimated reserves to a basis of manganese, units. Using the tonnages listed in Combinations 2, 3, 4 and 5, the reserves total 3,118,225 tons, 3,781,995 tons, 5,041,995 tons and 5,560,342 tons, respectively. Therefore, needing at the most 3,572,000 tons, as shown above, either Combination 3, 4 or 5 will not only suffice but will leave an excess-enough for 1 or 2 years for Combination 3, 9 or 10 years for Combination 4, and 12' to 13 years for Combination 5. This means that for Combination 5, without using tonnages obtained from beneficiating or from mixing poor ores, the reserves are ample for about 33 years.

Ruídos elétricos afetam os circuitos lógicos e conseqüentemente podem comprometer a confiabilidade nos controles de processos, e para minimizar as influências desses ruídos, algumas medidas básicas foram tomadas, com instalações adequadas de todo o sistema, como padronização do aterramento, encaminhamento de cabos, etc. Depois que as medidas foram implementadas, o resultado foi um sistema mais confiável. Se apenas um fio for encaminhado de forma incorreta ou se o aterramento estiver inadequado, pode ser suficiente para causar problemas. A experiência mostra que é muito difícil que todas as medidas sejam aplicadas integralmente, mas se não forem tomadas pelo menos as medidas básicas, o sistema ficará suscetível.

Systematic sampling, in reconnaissance fashion, of the continental shelves of the United States to define favorable areas of offshore mineral deposits, is one of the long-range marine mineral; programs of the U.S. Department of the Interior. In mid-1966 the Department of the Interior launched its Heavy Metals Program to stimulate domestic output of gold which is in serious short supply. The program is jointly conducted by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines.

Deposits are global, said Barrick Gold's Smith. This means that the mineral industry, by necessity, is global. "Manufacturers have considerable freedom to decide exactly where they wish to produce whatever it is that they sell," he said. "What we sell, on the other hand, must be produced where nature chose to lay it down. The question is not so much, whether to go global, as when to do it and how to go about it." The timing of international expansion depends on external factors, often political, Smith said, and on internal ones that relate to the company's size and stage of development. "In deciding how to expand, a company is largely deciding how to adapt its existing business strategy to activity on the world stage," he said Barrick entered 1997 with 1.58 kt (51 million oz) of reserves, Smith said, annual production of 93.3 t (3 mil- lion oz) and cash flow of $463 million. Reserves in- creased 40% in 1996 and production will begin to rise again significantly in 1999. "We believe our fundamental strategy is responsible for our early development and subsequent success," he said. Barrick entered the gold-mining industry in 1983. Its corporate mandate was to create shareholder value, Smith said. From the beginning, the company took a different approach - businesslike, entrepreneurial, strategic and focused. "Many mining companies start out with a technical team and develop business and financial expertise thereafter," Smith said. "In 1983, Barrick had the business people, and then moved into mining." First, it acquired part interest in two small operations, one in Alaska and one in Ontario. Then, in 1984, it merged with Camflo Mines, which operated a low-cost underground operation in Quebec.

Particle concentration distributions in a leaching tank have been estimated using a novel experimental approach that takes advantage of the galvanic interactions that occur between pyrite (FeS2) particles and a Pt electrode. The collision of FeS2 particles with Pt changes the open circuit potential measured with the electrode due to galvanic interactions. To discern particle collisions with the Pt electrode from experimental noise a simple analytical procedure was first adopted although the use of techniques involving frequency domain analysis is also briefly presented and discussed. Although this method is still under development, it is simple to implement and can yield valuable information regarding the hydrodynamic behavior of solid particles in stirred tanks in very short times. Finally, the advantages and drawbacks of the technique are discussed.

The flotation process may be considered an interactive system consisting of many chemical, operational, and equipment variables. Changing anyone of these variables causes an overall system response change. This study examines the effects of simultaneously changing the operating variables of: (1) frother concentration and air flow rate, and (2) frother concentration and collector concentration. It is part of a comprehensive study to look at how changes in several of the major variables may be used to produce interactions which will allow the rougher flotation process to be optimized. Ultimate recovery, flotation rate, concentrate grade and froth quality, are used as the major evaluative criteria.

PHASE relations in the system CoO-SiO2 have been determined as a basis for further investigations of thermodynamic properties of olivine solid solutions involving Co2SiO4 as a component. Previous data on the system CoO-SiO2 are incomplete or uncertain. Biltz and Lemke1 determined the melting point of cobalt orthosilicate as 1345°C , but Asanti and Kohlmeyer2 have later found a considerably higher temperature, 1420°C. The latter authors also studied melting relations of one mixture on the CO side and two mixtures on the SiO2 side of the orthosilicate composition and sketched a tentative phase diagram for a limited composition range of the system. However, no phase identification was carried out, and the authors left unanswered the question of the possible existence of a stable meta-silicate phase. Greig3 showed that a 90 wt pct SiO2-10 wt pct Co mixture at 1725°C consists of two immiscible liquid phases. The quenching technique was used in the present investigation. Mixtures of high-purity cobalt oxide ("Fisher Certified") and dehydrated silicic acid ("Baker Analyzed") were equilibrated in air atmosphere. The samples were then quenched to room temperature and the phases present were identified by microscopic and X-ray examination. The samples were kept in small envelopes made from thin (0.0004 in.) platinum foil. Thermodynamic data which have become available recently for Pt-Co alloys4 were used to check that the losses of COO from the oxide samples by alloying of cobalt with platinum in the present investigation were too small to change significantly the compositions of the oxide material during the equilibration. A vertical tube furnace with an 80 pct Pt 20 pct Rh resistance winding was used in runs up to 1510°C. Temperatures in these runs were measured with a Pt vs 90 pct Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple calibrated against the melting point of diopside (CaMgSi2O6, 1391.5?C). The given temperatures as measured by this technique are estimated to be accurate to *5°C. Quench runs at temperatures above 1650°C were made with a modified Roberts and Morey5 strip furnace, using strip resistors composed of a 60 pct Pt-40 pct Rh alloy. Temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer which was calibrated against the liquidus temperature of a mixture composed of 10 wt pct CaO, 90 wt pct SiO2 (1707°C). The temperatures measured with this technique have an estimated accuracy of +15°C. The results are shown graphically in Fig. 1. Only one intermediate phase, the orthosilicate Co2SiO4 with olivine-type structure, is stable in addition to the end members cobalt oxide and silica. The melting point of the orthosilicate was found to be 1415" ± 5°C. The metastilicate CoSiO3 is not stable at the temperatures of the present investigation. The two eutectic points in the system CoO-SiO2 where COO plus olivine, and olivine plus silica, coexist with liquid were found to be 72 wt pct COO and 1407°C and 63 wt pct COO and 1381°C, respectively. The melting point of cobalt oxide in air was taken as 1745?C, based on the previous data of Aukrust and Muan.6 Within limits of error (+ 5?C), identical eutectic temperatures to those determined in air were found when two representative mixtures were equilibrated at 1 atm O2 pressure and in an atmosphere of 84 vol pct CO2, 16 vol pct H2. This suggests that changes in oxidation state of cobalt in the condensed phases are not significant as far as their effect on the phase relations are concerned. This inference was substantiated by failure to detect7 any "excess oxygen" (i.e., oxygen in excess of that contained in Co2SiO4) in a sample of orthosilicate composition equilibrated in air 10°C above the liquidus temperature and subsequently quenched to room temperature. Thermodynamic calculations based on a rigorous mass balance technique have been carried out for the chalcocite-potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) system. The results of the calculations are used to: i) construct Eh-pH diagrams for KEX additions ranging from 0 to 10-4 M, ii) determine the amounts of cupric ions and copper xanthate formed at different Eh and pH values to make three-dimensional diagrams, and iii) determine the minimum KEX addition required to form CuX and CuX2.. This allows prediction of the optimum conditions for flotation and comparison of this with microflotation test data. In addition, voltammetry experiments have been conducted on chalcocite electrodes at pH 9.2 and pH 6.8 in order to gain information on the role of metastable species in flotation. On the basis of these experiments, possible reaction mechanisms are discussed and comparisons are made with what is expected on the basis of thermodynamics.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fifth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in Volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion of that area.
