Over the past year or so, a number of mining companies have been meeting to examine the role of research in surface mining and, in particular, how to establish a collaborative research effort for the surface mining industry. A review has been completed which has identified the topics that are of interest to the surface mining companies for undertaking collaborative research. This has identified key subject areas such as Operations & Equipment; Maintenance; Environment & Reclamation; and Stability. Specific research projects for the initial research effort have been selected which include Wireless Data Communications, Analysis and Management; Application of GPS in Mining; and Tires for Heavy Haulers. In addition, attention has also been focussed on finding a suitable low cost, but effective, organization to coordinate and manage the collaborative research. The recently formed CONRAD Organization (Canadian Oilsands Network for Research and Development) appears to be a suitable candidate and discussions are ongoing with that group. This paper provides a summary of the review of surface mining research needs and of the status of the establishment of a collaborative research body for surface mining.

The Walnut Creek Mine was developed in 1989 to supply lignite to the Texas-New Mexico Power TNP-ONE power plant. Being new, we had the opportunity to start from scratch and rethink many of the traditional methods of managing a mine operation. We had the opportunity to create a team environment, encouraging people to get involved and make decisions. The founding philosophy of the mine, "A Quality Product by Quality People", acknowledged that the key to a productive, quality operation was the people. This paper will explore methods employed by Walnut Creek in selection of team members, building the team and the relative success of these methods.

Metallurgical accounting for toll treatment smelters pose a number of challenges. Multiple feed stockpiles have to be accounted for as part of the monthly recovery estimation. Moreover, multiple metallurgical intermediates make up part of the in-process inventory, which also influence the monthly recovery calculation. Errors propagate from the measurements of volumes, assays, moisture fractions and bulk densities in the various material types through multiple steps up to the point where the final recovery is calculated. These errors contribute non-linearly to the variance in the final recovery estimate. This paper develops the mathematical formulation for variance propagation in toll smelting operations, including the effect of in-process inventory, assuming measurement biases have been eliminated beforehand. Operational data from a Southern African copper smelter is used for a case study. The method of propagation of variance showed that uncertainties in stockpile assays were the main contributors to variance in the recovery estimate. Variance in the volume and bulk density uncertainties contributed a secondary, yet significant, proportion to the overall recovery variance. It was determined, for the given case study, that the recovery variance depended on the calculation method used and that variance propagation via the two-product formula was smaller than recovery variances calculated via the standard recovery formula. However, the probability that the two product formula will give inaccurate (versus imprecise) results is significantly more due to the practical difficulty of equiprobable sampling of tailings streams from smelter plants (which includes materials such as slags and flue dust). Recommendations are made on how to achieve a reduction in overall uncertainty for toll treatment smelters. "Introduction It has long been recognized by the hot-dip galvanizing industry that the characteristics of the galvanized coating can be influenced significantly by steel and pro cessing variables. Probably the variable of most concern to galvan izers today is steel chemistry. More specifically, the problem is the excessive reactivity of continuously-cast, silicon-bearing steels. In the past, structural steels processed by general galvanizers were in the low-to-medium ca rbon category and contained silicon at either low impurity levels (as with rimmed steels), or less than approximately 0.10% (as with semi-killed steels). The structures of the coatings produced on such steels are characterized by dense, compact layers of delta and zeta iron-zinc alloy phases and a distinct outer layer of eta zinc, which usually imparts a bright shiny appearance to the coating. The presence of silicon in steel, above the so-called semi-killed levels, is known to cause marked stru ctural changes in galvanized coatings. Such coatings are characterized by a relatively thin delta layer, a thick , coarse zeta layer and frequently an absence of the eta layer. The eta phase, comprising zinc which is carried out of the bath during withdrawal of the work, can be consumed by the continuation of the coating reactions until its temperature drops to the solidification point. This results in a dull grey and often mottled surface instead of the usually bright metallic appearance. These galvanized coatings are usually much thicker than coating specifications requ ire and they are usually more brittle and have poor adhesion to the steel. In service, these coatings tend to develop a rust-like discolouration. With the wider use of continuous casting by the steel producers and the associated additions of silicon in this process, the problem is becoming more important and receiving greater attention from the galvanizing industry ."

The Broken Hill orebody ,occurs in the Willyama Complex, a block of Precambrian rocks which have been strongly folded and metamorphosed at moderate to high grade. Although -the origin of the silver-lead-zinc mineralization remains obscure, recent investigations have substantiated the view that the orebody has undergone concomitant high grade metamorphism with the enclosing wallrocks. The mesoscopic structures produced by this metamorphism are described, and the possible processes Telating to their formation are disoussed.In the high grade ore, metamorphic structures which can be recognized are foliation and lineation, wallrock fragments, layering, flow folds, ore breccias, and sulphide bearing veins. These structures can be related to processes involving plastic flow and fluid phase transport of the mineral assemblage. 'In areas of low grade mineralization adjacent to high grade ore, the structures more closely resemble those produced in -the wallrocks-foliatlon, lineation, layering, folds, and sulphide injections. Within areas of high grade ore, lenses and pods of manganese silicates Probably represent original inhomogeneities in the ore, i.e., portions of manganese-rich and sulphide deficient rock which have been metamorphosed to manganese silicates.From the structures displayed, a sequence of events has been established for the plastic flow of ore during deformation.

O aumento crescente dos requisitos de segurança a serem atingidos pela indústria automotiva vem cada vez mais exigindo a utilização de aços com maior conteúdo tecnológico, que é o caso do aço bifásico (“dual-phase”), que são caracterizados por uma microestrutura ferrítico-martensítica. Neste trabalho, estudaram-se, em escala laboratorial, os efeitos das temperaturas de encharque intercríticas (750, 800 e 850°C) e distintas taxas obtidas por dois diferentes meios de resfriamento (ar e ar forçado) na obtenção de microestrutura bifásica a partir de dois aços laminados a frio “full-hard” (produzidos industrialmente), com micro-adições de Nb e Mo e diferentes teores de C e Mn. Utilizando ensaios mecânicos de tração, microscopia óptica (MO) e eletrônica de varredura (MEV), observaram-se as influências da temperatura de encharque e da taxa de resfriamento sobre as microestruturas resultantes e as influências da presença de ferrita encruada, dos carbonetos não dissolvidos e da morfologia da segunda fase sobre as propriedades mecânicas das amostras estudadas.

The design of piles and of pile groups has remarkably progressed over the past two decades. The in­creasing complexity of the building concept implements a more rational approach of the deep foundation capacity and its interaction with the structure. Moreover, the understanding of the soil characteristics relevant to deep foundation behaviour, is continuously in progress because soil parameters are always more accurately determined; which also contributed a lot to the recent developments in pile capacity design. At last, due to the increasing sensitivity of buildings to deformations, continuous attention must be also paid to pile group settlements. The aim of this report is to discuss some of the mentioned more important pile design developments.

The depth of underground mines has been increasing due to several factors, such as material demand growth and improving technology. It is a challenge to understand severe failure mechanisms such as spalling, which is caused by induced high stress. To investigate this failure mechanism under high stress conditions, intact rock blocks with small size tunnel were tested at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM). The range of rocks, such as sandstone and granite, were drilled (200 mm hole) and tested using a servo-controlled 450 t capacity INSTRON machine. The acoustic emission sensors were attached to the block mass during the experiment to investigate the seismic response prior to spalling failure. The effect of the ground support system towards the failure was also examined by comparing the seismic response of the various ground support schemes.CITATION:Kusui, A and Villaescusa, E, 2016. Limestone-based material is effective for reducing arsenic concentrations below the current limit of 10 parts per billion for drinking water, typically resulting in final concentrations of about 4 to 6 ppb. However, in laboratory and field testing, further reductions to the 1 ppb range are difficult to achieve with limestone unless other material such as iron is added. The removal mechanism with untreated limestone appears to be the formation of a low-solubility precipitate of hydrated calcium arsenate, in the form of arsenate-apatite. Likely reactions and thermodynamic data indicate a theoretical removal limit of about 2 to 4 ppb for arsenic using raw limestone. Limestone also can reduce concentrations of cadmium and lead below 1 ppb in water, resulting in >99% removal efficiency. Thermodynamic constraints appear to be favorable for reactions involving the formation of otavite during cadmium removal and the formation of hydrocerussite during lead removal.

Despite of significant cost advantages and the positive expierence roof bolting is limited up to 15-20% of all workings at the Cuzbass mines. The low level of application of the technology is the result of specific mining and geological conditions and defects of organization and technical support. When analysing mining and geological conditions of development working maintenance and geomechanical aspects the necessity of changing of technological schemes of preparation and extraction of mine sections is obvious. The prospects of large-scaled transferring from frame support to roof bolting are connected with introduction the technology of support with the help of non- expanding bolt classes including bolts with mineral filler fixation. The design of bolters with mineral filler fixation is given here. The results of testing of bolt load characteristics in artificial holes and in situ are proved the technology efficient. For increasing of drilling works efficiency it is necessary to master the production of oilless compressor and heading machines with the manipulator. For bolt dimension forecast it is recommended to use the relations of measured parameters of "dome" to roof shifts. Effective monitoring of rock pressure in the junctions is connected with the use of support of conventional bolts together with bolts of deep installation with simultaneous supporting of face ends with special mechanical sets, which compensate face length change.

In 2000 Ferroatlantica started a project with the aim to develop a new casting machine for silicon and other ferroalloys. Until now, it has been cast more than 25.000 tons of silicon for the chemical and metallurgical market. This system has improved the process yield, productivity and product quality which place?s Ferroatlantica at the top of technology development in this field. After the first presentation of the Ferroatlantica?s casting machine at Infacon X, we would like to show the improvements in the control which have permitted us to increase the lifetime of the copper and to obtain, at the end of the machine, the right product size for the customer avoiding the current necessity of crushing and sizing the lumpy metal. Furthermore, we have improved the system in relation to the obtaining of smaller granulometries at the end of casting machine. Not only is this kind of machine cost competitive for special silicon applications but also for other normal ferroalloys with different specifications of size and thickness.

A field investigation was undertaken to study some of the. chemical and hydrological aspects of leaching an impermeable copper sulfide waste dump. Samples, obtained by means of a Becker pneumatic drill from Kennecott's Chino "J" dump, near Silver City, New Mexico, were analyzed for their moisture and soluble-salt content, Fe +2 , Fe +3, Cu +2 , and H in their interstitial solutions and non-water - soluble Fe, Cu, and S in their rinsed residues. Conclusions were drawn from these data concerning the overall chemistry of impermeable-dump leaching and the hydrological characteristics of the dump.

Long-term stability, appropriate taxation and incentive policies are essential to attract and stimulate investment in the mineral sector. An outline of Ontario's $4.6 billion industry and associated tax incentives is presented. Producers are offered incentives under The Mining Tax Act, federal and provincial income tax acts for exploration and development by reducing Me after tax cost to 13-25¢ for each dollar spent. The Mining Tax Act provides generous processing incentives which have positive effects in enhancing investment and economic advantages of building processing facilities. Non-mining companies and entrepreneurial individuals can receive 25% of eligible exploration expenditures in grants/tax credits under the Ontario Mineral Exploration Program.

The Mt Lyell copper mine in western Tasmania has discharged acid drainage (AD) into the Queen and King Rivers and Macquarie Harbour for over a century. Presently, dissolved copper loads of about 1000 tonnes per annum and dissolved aluminium loads of >2000 tonnes per annum are contained in the AD, which is derived from underground workings (~60 per cent) and historic waste rock dumps (~40 per cent). Flows vary from about 100 L/s during dry periods, to >400 L/s during the wet winter. The site is presently operated by Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) who are not responsible for the acid drainage generated from the mine site. Although western Tasmania is famous for its mining history, tourism and aquaculture have emerged as the new industries on the West Coast, with a major tourism railway (the Abt) recently opened along the banks of the Queen and King Rivers. The emergence of these industries in a æclean greenÆ Tasmania has resulted in a strong community and government push to remediate the acid drainage. Remediation investigations and efforts at Mt Lyell were initiated by the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment (DPIWE), previously known as DELM, in 1995, and have included the quantification of environmental impacts arising from the AD, and the investigation and costing of potential remediation options. A primary focus of the work has been to identify cost-neutral options which recover metals from the AD in a saleable form to help defray on going treatment costs. This paper summarises these activities in generally a chronological order, highlighting findings of the program that are potentially applicable to other acid drainage sites.

Attempts have been made to electroplate titanium and zirconium from aqueous, nonaqueous, and fused-salt electrolytes. Metals were produced only in fused-salt electrolytes, the major product being sponge metal. All other electrolytes gave only partial reduction of the metal ions. Fused alkali borate electrolytes containing titanium salts gave titanium boride powders and coatings of poor adherence. Some of the problems encountered in the deposition of these metals and some of the aspects of titanium and zirconium chemistry involved are discussed. INTRODUCTION Titanium and zirconium are both relatively light, noncorrosive metals with both military and civilian uses. This has led to intensive investigations into the metallurgy of these metals. Both metals are high in the Electrochemical Displacement Series and are difficult to prepare in a pure state. At present they are prepared by reducing their chlorides, using magnesium. Electrolytic reductions have resulted in the preparation of fine powders or sponge of variable quality. It is believed that a good process of electroplating these metals on a baser metal would result in a very desirable product. The objective of the research summarized in this report was to investigate methods of electrodepositing these metals, with the idea of producing uniform, coherent plates. Most of the work was concentrated on titanium, the more abundant of the two metals. A system developed for titanium should be applicable to zirconium owing to their chemical similarity. Information gained from these experiments may also be applicable to the electro-winning of the metal.

The biggest Port of Latin America - the Santos Port in São Paulo, Brazil - has been drilled and blasted by controlled underwater techniques in order to remove around 40,000 m3 (52,318 cubic yard) of rock divided in two outcrop rocks: Teffé and Itapema. Underwater pumped explosive, in combination with small cartridges areas, was successfully used in order to reach a target depth of -15m (-49 ft) and a width of 220m (722 ft) in the navigation channel. It was the first time that a pumped explosive was used in underwater blasting in Brazil and it represents a historic benchmark for projects of this kind in this country. The main challenges faced in this project include the control of the ground vibration, due to the necessity to carry out detonations 40m (131 ft) away from the quay wall - where the passenger terminal and the 80 year-old warehouse were located – and the rush schedule available, in order to finish the underwater drilling and blasting phase before the coming cruise season. Therefore, the perfect combination of an ideal pumped product with an effective pumping system has permitted to carry out the project in a record of less time than 3 months (against to the original expected time of 18 months), with all vibration events under control as result of the special ground vibration program carried out.

Open fire in coal mines is one of the most serious threats to miners, as well as to the mine. Open fire can often be effectively dealt with by prompt local action, otherwise it very quickly becomes uncontrollable. In one incident, none of the available open fire control technologies, viz., water deluge and sprinkler systems, high-expansion foam, high-pressure high-stability nitrogen foam, water misting, and ventilation and pressure control techniques, were effective for saving the mine without sealing from surface, since the fuel-rich environment prohibited underground access due to the methane explosion hazard. The authors have developed a methodology for dealing with advancedstage open fires underground by the application of a modified ventilation control technique. It is based primarily on a better understanding of the behaviour of open fires, proper diagnosis of the problem, application of judicious ventilation control techniques, and selection of suitable fire indices for assessing the status of an open fire. This methodology was used to successfully control an open fire in Surakachhar 3 and 4 incline mine Surakachhar, central India. The fire area was sealed underground and production subsequently resumed in record time. The paper discusses the behaviour of open fires, particulars of the mine, diagnosis of the problem, experimentation methods, and the results obtained.

"Mineralogical techniques including microscopic methods, reflected and transmitted light microscopy, Cathodoluminescence (CL) and Scanning Electron Microscopy equipped with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), are useful in determining the quality of industrial minerals. They are essential for studying ores and metallurgical products including the evaluation of physical characteristics of the mineral, paragenetic relationships, associations with possible deleterious contaminants (e.g., sulphides), spatial distribution within the ore zones and liberation characteristics. The methods are inexpensive, and provide quick identification and distinction among the industrial minerals and the gangue minerals in a section. Additionally, SEM is necessary to reveal complex textural sequences and 3-D measurements of minerals and quick semi-quantitative analysis.Common analytical methods include Electron Microprobe Analyses (EMPA) and Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) (commonly with XRF and ICP) for major and trace elements. The EMPA analyses of industrial minerals provide information on the purity of the analyzed grains as opposed to the bulk chemical analyses that may be misleading due to contamination by other associated common “gangue” minerals. These techniques have been implemented for the case studies of wollastonite, V-magnetite and muscovite. Therefore, these methods can provide extremely useful information and lead to the implementation of a successful pilot-testing programme.MINERALOGICAL EVALUATION OF DEPOSITSDespite their considerable and increasing economic importance, industrial mineral deposits have traditionally been neglected by economic geologists, and are only rarely the subject of the detailed analysis widely lavished on metallic mineralization. Moreover, in that they generally represent concentrations of “normal” rock-forming minerals, albeit commonly with particular textural and/or geochemical features, they have tended to fall between the mainstream of petrogenetic studies and mineral deposit research (Grammatikopoulos 1999). For many industrial minerals, little attention has been paid to the factors responsible for their local concentration as large and high-grade bodies. This comparative neglect has particularly been the case for minerals such as talc and wollastonite, widespread in metamorphic rocks, in which they are reasonably interpreted as components of assemblages derived, respectively, from pelitic sediments, ultramafic igneous rocks and siliceous limestones."

The Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practice and Control Conference was held from Oct. 20through 24, 2002, at the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference was attended by nearly 400 of the world’s top mineral-processing specialists, including plant-design engineers, mineral-processing consultants, academics, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. The meeting was sponsored by SME and cosponsored by the Canadian Mineral Processing Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The conference covered all aspects of mineral-processing design, construction and operation. The meeting included more than 130 technical presentations. Topics included sampling programs, feasibility studies, design criteria, process technologies, construction, start-up operations and shutdowns. To stimulate interaction and discussion throughout the five-day conference, the sessions were presented consecutively. Attendees had the opportunity to attend every session.
