Recently, work was carried out by the Shotcrete Working Group to study anisotropy in steel fibre reinforced shotcrete using strain-controlled, compressive strength testing methods. The shotcrete materials used and specimen preparation procedures as well as testing methods are described. The test results are discussed and it is concluded that, because of the anisotropic nature of fibre reinforced shotcrete, it may be worthwhile investigating the degree of such anisotropy in practice using strain-controlled, strength testing techniques.

If you build a big truck, build a big tire to match it. Let that haulage synergy aid the economics, productivity and lessened maintenance for the unit. Now, Cater-pillar and Michelin have done just that. Discussions began in 1996. Caterpillar was making plans for its 797 ultra-class haul truck. The development team realized the need for a tire that could withstand extreme loads. The 797 would weigh 558 t (615 st) and be capable of 64 km/h (40 mph) speeds. So Caterpillar approached Michelin. The two companies realized the benefits of jointly developing a tire for the 797.

The stratigraphy of the Western Coalfield is briefly reviewed and the important units of the Lithgow Coal Measures, particularly the coal seams, are defined. The possibility of coal measures of Tomago age ocurring near the edges of the Sydney Basin is discussed onpresent evidence.Using data obtained from unpublished drilling records, detailed structural, isopachous and lithofaeies maps have been drawn. These show that the structure of the coal basin has been influenced by the underlying basement in many ways.The prominent jointing in the overlying Triassic sandstones is discussed in relation to jointing in the coal measure sediments.It is concluded that in addition to the general knowledge obtained with respect to the coal basin, useful information regarding coal quality and quantity can be gained by the study of broader sedimentary and structural features.INTRODUCTIONThe term "Western Coalfield" covers approximately the area from Katoomba to Rylstone, together with the smaller, separate Ulan area (Fig. 1). The area studied is part of the great sedimentary Sydney basin named by Osborne (1948). The first discovery of coal in Sitlt in the area was made in 1824 by Andrew Brown, although George Bass noted the presence of coal float in the Grose River in 1797. Production is recorded from the Western Coalfield in 1838 but mining was intermittent until 1868 when mines in the Lithgowvalley (producing coal from the Lithgow Seam) came into production. In 1882 the Katoomba Seam was first worked at Katoomba.The work of J. E. Carne (1903, 1908) defined the limits of the Coal Measure sediments and also contributed a great amount of valuable detailed information about the region.

MILLING of Nova Scotia gold ores began in 1862 with arrastras and wooden stamps and has progressed to heavier stamps followed by tables and other forms of concentration for the recovery of the sulphides. Chlorination and cyanide leaching of the concentrates has been practised, and in 1936 the combined amalgamation and all-sliming cyanidation plant of Seal Harbor Gold Mines was built. It has since been found that it is not necessary to cyanide the full tonnage and now only the concentrates are being so treated. From his experience in this enterprise, the writer presents the accompanying flow-sheet and supporting comments. While he has not the temerity to maintain that it is the best or only flow-sheet for Nova Scotia gold ores, he feels that it warrants thoughtful consideration by members of the milling fraternity of the Province. THE ORE The gold in Nova Scotia ores occurs both free and intimately associated with sulphides-chiefly arsenopyrite. Much of the free gold is quite coarse and crystalline. This is especially true when it occurs in white quartz. When in the slate, it is usually in thin plates and scales, frequently coated and discoloured. The values bound up in the sulphides are not amenable to amalgamation and must be recovered by other methods-concentration, followed by smelting or fine grinding and cyanidation. While high freight and treatment charges apply on concentrates shipped from the Province to smelters, a considerable quantity has been so disposed of in the past. However, it is hoped that a customs cyanidation plant will soon become available to producers of these auriferous concentrates in Nova Scotia.

The Interior Department's Bureau of Mines is the Federal Government's primary research arm in the mineral and fossil-fuel fields. In accordance with its Organic Act of 1910, the Bureau's responsibilities have been reinforced since the passage of the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act of 1966, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, and the Mining and Minerals Policy Act of 1970. The 1966 and 1969 acts deal specifically with the development of safe working conditions and a healthful working environment for those engaged in the mining industry, while the third sets the national policy as follows: " ... to foster and encourage private enterprise in (l) the development of economically sound and stable domestic mining, minerals, metal, and mineral reclamation industries; (2) the orderly and economic development of domestic mineral resources, reserves, and reclamation of metals and minerals to help assure satisfaction of industrial security, and environmental needs; (3) mining, mineral, and metallurgical research, including the use and recycling of scrap to promote the wise and efficient use of our natural and reclaimable mineral resources, and (4) the study and development of [ ]

The deposit lies in amphibolite-facies biotite granite-gneisses of Proterozoic age, 4 km east of a major crustal break known as the Ifewara-Zungeru fault. Gold mineralisation is contained in a zone of quartz-carbonate (mainly calcite) veins and hydrothermally altered gneisses with associated small-scale intrusions along a steeply dipping second-order fault zone that roughly parallels the main fault. Gold is present mainly at grain boundaries between quartz and carbonate as discrete particles up to 100 micrometres in size, in general association with sparse, scattered pyrite, pyrrhotite and some base metal sulphides. Adjacent to the gold-bearing zone the granite-gneisses have been hydrothermally altered with minor volume increase, most notable enrichment being in K2O, S, Pb and Cu (and Au). High concentrations of Th, Y, Ce and Zr in the granite-gneisses imply derivation from S-type granites. It is likely that their high heat production capacity maintained the high temperatures needed to transport gold in the hydrothermal systems. It is most probable that the mineralisation dates from the Pan-African orogeny (650-450 Ma)

A LUSTY baby of the Institute, the Coal Division, showed that it had acquired a full set of teeth and was capable of man's work at the Division meeting at Fairmont, W. Va., on March 26 and 27. At this second of a series of field meetings, the first of which was held in Pittsburgh last fall, the industry in the East was represented from top to bottom and good humor and enthusiasm were the predominant notes. West Virginians are always good hosts and this meeting would have proved the statement to any inclined to doubt it. The spacious auditorium of the Fairmont Hotel was arranged for the technical sessions, the hotel being headquarters for the meeting. About a hundred and twenty-five representatives were registered and in attendance when Thomas G. Fear, chairman, opened the morning session at 10 o'clock Mr. Fear first introduced Howard Eavenson, vice-chairman of the morning program, who, as chairman of the Coal Division, had labored long and cheerfully to make the meeting successful. Mr. Eavenson talked briefly on what the organization was doing, pointing out that these field meetings were designed to bring the members into closer touch with the parent Institute and give the younger engineers in the field a better opportunity to participate in the work the Institute is doing. He congratulated the various committees for their work in promoting the meeting.

"THE LORNEX MINING PROJECT is one of several large-tonnage, low-grade operations recently placed in operation in British Columbia. It is located in the Highland Valley in the south central portion of the province. This area is described as a divide valley at an elevation range of 4,000 to 6,000 feet and is situated on the divide between two drainage systems. The major drainage to the west flows into the Thompson River and to the east and south the drainage enters the Nicola River system. This open-ended valley lies between low, rounded mountains in fairly heavily-wooded country. Prior to the commencement of copper mining activities, the first by Bethlehem Copper Corporation Ltd. over ten years ago, the valley was only sparsely settled. A few small ranches were in existence on the several Indian Reserves located along the valley bottomland. There has also been a small amount of logging activity in the valley, although much of the area is covered by dense lodgepole pine which has little or no value to the loggers. As the mining interest mounted with further discoveries of the disseminated copper ore typical of the district, much of the valley was covered with mineral claims and exploration drilling was carried on by several companies at various times. At the time Lornex was preparing to commence major construction work in early 1970, there was very little activity of any kind in the Highland Valley outside of the Bethlehem operation and a small amount of ranching."

"The Cigar Lake project will develop the world’s second largest high grade uranium deposit. The Cigar Lake Phase 1 orebody contains approximately 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7% U3O8. The mine, to be operated by Cameco Corporation, will use a unique water jet boring mining method to cut previously frozen ore. A distinctive ore handling design is required to handle the high grade ore slurry exiting the mining machines. The ore will be crushed and ground underground, with the ore slurry then pumped to surface. Loaded into purpose-designed containers on tractor-trailer units, the ore slurry will be trucked to Cogema Resources Incorporated’s McClean Lake mill. McClean Lake will leach all of the ore. Forty-three percent of the resulting uranium solution will remain at McClean Lake for processing into yellowcake. The other 57% of the uranium solution will be shipped to Cameco’s Rabbit Lake mill for processing into yellowcake there. Detailed design for the Cigar Lake project is now underway. Barring regulatory or market delays, production could start up as soon as early 2005.INTRODUCTIONThe Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan hosts a number of large uranium mining and milling operations, including Cluff Lake, Key Lake, McArthur River, McClean Lake and Rabbit Lake. HISTORY AND LOCATION SEAL HARBOR GOLD MINES, LIMITED, was incorporated in January, 1934, to take over 116 acres of mining lands in the Stormont gold district, Guysboro county, Nova Scotia. The nearby ten-stamp Mulgrave mill was also purchased, and since that time 974 acres of adjoining properties have been secured from the Government by direct lease. The property is served by a motor road and is about two miles from the village of Goldboro, situated on the shore of Isaac's harbour. The bulk of ?the supplies are brought in by coastal steamer from Halifax, a distance of about 100 miles, since the nearest railway connections are at Antigonish, some 40 miles distant. EARLYY WORK The Seal Harbor properties include the old Partington and Beaver Hat mines. A small tonnage of ore was mined from each and treated on the properties in stamp mills, which were later torn. down . A survey of old records shows that this ore averaged about $8.00 gold per ton. Development work by the present Company was confined to the 100-foot level until February, 1935, but after that rime the incline shaft was deepened to 425 feet and the 300-foot level was explored east and west of the shaft. Six belts of ore were intersected to the west of the shaft. The ore from these belts was hand sorted and the ore portion was put through the 10-stamp Mulgrave mill to defray operating expenses and to serve as a sample of the deposits. The average recovery per ton from this sorted ore was $6.10. Samples of the ore were sent to the testing laboratories of the Mines Branch, at Ottawa, and of Canadian Industries, Limited, at Toronto. Recommendations from both of these authorities were for removal of the coarse gold by concentration and barrel amalgamation, followed by cyanidation of the residue.

In June 1929 the Bureau of Mines issued a 13-page information circular entitled "Mineral Wool," which was one of the first publications to present to the public Rome technical aspects of the mineral-wool industry. Since then several articles on the subject have appeared in the technical press as well as in publications of State organizations. Inquiries for information on mineral wool have continued to be received by the Bureau of Mines in large number, and in 1935 it was decided to make a field survey of the plants then producing and to collect therefrom technical data to be compiled in a paper for nubile distribution. With the cooperation of the industry, this survey was made, and Information Circular 6984, Mineral Wool, was published in January 1930. The issue was exhausted after a few months, and requests for copies continued to come to the Bureau. As opportunity arose, further field studies were made in American as well as Canadian plants. The present circular contains the essential information in Information Circular 6994 together with date from later field studies.

Tin production and export from the Far East are still a long way off from the prewar figures. The Malayan Peninsula, which had a rather good start directly after the war largely because of stock piles found in Singapore and elsewhere, has since been hampered in the rehabilitation of its tin mines and dredging operations by material shortages and, more recently and more severely, by revolts and attacks of communist elements and gangster bands. These hindrances make working in the mines dangerous and form a daily threat against the valuable and highly vulnerable dredges. Contrary to the conditions in Malaya are those on the tin islands of Billiton, Banka, and Singkep-all in the Netherlands East Indies-where the Dutch have re-established peaceful relations with the population. Dutch efforts since the fall of 1945 have been rewarded by continuously increasing production, extension of production facilities, and return of moderate prosperity, complete safety, and all-out co-operation among the population ? native and Chinese ? to the benefit of all concerned.

Water use and wastewater management is becoming a focus for many industries around Australia and the rest of the world. Good quality water is increasingly being recognised as a precious resource, and regulations on the bulk storage and discharge of waste streams is becoming more stringent in order to protect the environment, existing water reserves and the communities that use these resources. Components such as heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide, and sulfate from acid mine drainage are some that occur at mining and metallurgical processing sites. Removal of such components can allow safe re-use of these streams, reducing the new water requirements of the process, or else allowing acceptable discharge to the environment. Re-use or discharge of treated water eliminates or reduces the risk associated with storage of large volumes of contaminated water on site.Technologies where a contaminant is selectively precipitated and removed as a sludge are used for many of these treatments. Selection of the best treatment option for wastewater must depend on what is suitable to each site, and consider not only the nature of the contaminant, but also other aspects, including the location and situation of the site, local regulations, cost of reagents, the sensitivity of the local environment and waste sludge disposal options. This research investigates the generation of an effective carbonaceous material from waste ‘pure water sachets’ and their subsequent utilisation as reductants for the reduction of the Opon Mansi iron ore. Composite pellets of Opon Mansi iron ore and pulverised carbonaceous material generated from waste pure water sachets were heated from room temperature to 1200 °C in a gas fired furnace for seventy minutes. The reduced pellet was analysed chemically for its oxygen and carbon content using a LECO Oxygen/Nitrogen and LECO Carbon/Sulphur analysers, respectively. It was observed that nuggets of metallic iron were readily produced with the carbonaceous materials acting as an effective reductant and source of chemical energy. XRD analysis of waste ‘pure water sachets’ revealed that the polymer was semi-crystalline with peaks that were identical to those of high density polyethylene (HDPE). Gas emission behaviour of the iron ore-PWS pellet was studied in a horizontal tube furnace at 1200 °C using an infrared gas analyser; the results revealed an exhaust gas rich in the reducing gases CO and CH4 along with CO2.

The recruitment and retention of future talent into the explosives industry is becoming increasingly important. Student chapters help with this effort but what are they doing and are there things they could learn from each other? This paper discusses the University of Kentucky Student Chapter's efforts to grow membership, retain its recruits, and integrate them into the explosives industry. Several social and professional events during which the students are able to meet and network with members of their future industry are introduced. The special relationship that has been fostered between the University of Kentucky and Missouri University of Science and Technology is discussed. Professional development initiatives which are critical for a student to become vested in the industry are shared in this paper. These opportunities which range from internships to research positions allow a person to get a better understanding of the explosives industry and find the niche that best suits them. Many of the student chapters are closely connected with engineering programs. While this makes sense and both entities benefit from these arrangements there is a trend of job placement primarily in the engineering industry. By providing these students with the chance to learn more about the explosives industry and get hands on experience more of these future engineers and professionals can be retained after their graduation.

Companhia Paraibuna de Metais (CPM) is presently pursuing a zinc production expansion project. Besides increasing production, the goal of the project is to address existing problems while providing a platform for a proposed twofold increase in production in 2003/2004. Therefore, the current expansion strategy was formulated to address present and future requirements. Computer simulation modeling and full scale plant testing are being used to generate data to optimize the operating conditions and to perform a sensitivity analysis. The initial phase of the project, which will boost CPM's capacity to 86,000 t/y of marketable zinc, is to be completed in September 2000.

The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context in which they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage such as nuclear power generation where international cooperationis eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit its mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions. Over the last 30 years Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG has gained a lot of experience in mechanized tunnelling on various major projects. During this period most important developments concerning the machine technology for EPB- and Slurry-Shields have taken place. Since the first application of a hydro shield for the Wilhelmsburg Collector project in Hamburg in the early seventies, several stages of development have led to the current state-of-the-art in mechanized tunnelling. The continuous improvement of TBM techniques allows the execution of high quality tunnelling, particularly with regard to maximum safety and efficiency. The practical experience of the construction companies is of essential importance in order to continue further development and improvement.

The author has developed a seven-step process called the Applied Rock Mechanics (ARM) Protocol that the author has used to solve numerous roof stability problems in mines throughout North America since 1975. It is a practical evaluation process using trained observation, innovative data collection instrumentation, video borehole cameras, analytical processes, and controlled testing methods that have become highly effective in solving ground control problems in every type of underground mine. This paper will describe each of the steps of the protocol and how the rock mechanics engineer applies them to resolve a typical ground control problem.
