Through the use of nondestructive testing techniques, the Bureau of Mines is pursuing a goal of improving the efficiency of the rock excava-tion process. Toward this end, 44 laboratory tests were conducted to identify a practical method of monitoring fracture development in rock, as caused by an excavation tool. An acoustic emission CAE) transducer was used to monitor the test samples as they were loaded. The signal from this instrument was recorded in real time along with the radial and axial loads generated by the fracturing device. Through the review of these signals on a common-time base, it was possible to see the relationship between the developing fracture and the loading conditions. As a part of the posttesting investigations, samples that were pletely fractured were sawn and ground to expose the fractures. examination of these samples allowed approximations to be made incom-Visual of the total surface created. Surface area approximations were also made for the completely fractured samples. Quantitative analyses· of the AE signals were conducted for comparisons with the calculated surface areas.

Keywords: RH refining process, flow of molten steel, two-phase flow, gas holdup, circulation rate, mathematical modeling A three-dimensional mathematical model for the flow of the molten steel in the whole degasser during the RH refining process has been proposed and developed with considering the physical characteristics of the process, particularly the behaviors of gas-liquid two-phase flow in the up-snorkel and the momentum exchange between the two phases. The fluid flow fields and the gas holdups of liquid phases and others respectively in a 90 t RH degasser and its water model unit with a 1/5 linear scale have been computed using this model. The results showed that the flow pattern of molten steel in the whole RH degasser could be well modeled by the model. The liquid can be fully mixed during the refining process except the area close to the free surface of liquid and zone between the two snorkels in the ladle, but there is a boundary layer between the descending liquid stream from the down-snorkel and its surrounding liquid, which is a typical liquid-liquid two phase flow, and the molten steel in the ladle is not in a perfect mixing state. The lifting gas blown is rising mostly near the up-snorkel wall, which is more obvious under the conditions of a practical RH degasser, and the flow pattern of the bubbles and liquid in the up-snorkel is closer to an annular flow. The calculated circulation rates for the model unit at different lifting gas rates are in good agreement with the determined values.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of existing forms of subcontracting in the South African mining industry. A descriptive framework is developed to understand different subcontracting arrangements. We argue that, in order to do so, it is important to distinguish between labour broking and gang subcontracting. Data resulting from a research project (including an analysis of historical sources, interviews with contractors and focus group interviews with mineworkers) is presented to highlight the implications of changing formations of subcontracting for the South African mining industry in the late 1990s. Apart from the subcontracting of ?traditional? functions, such as shaft sinking, access development, catering and hostel maintenance, contractors are now used in ?core? mining activities. In some instances, whole shafts are ?outsourced? to outside agencies. It is argued that certain of the subcontracting arrangements have serious implications for the ability of the mining industry to improve health and safety standards. Some of the practices can potentially result in conflict between different categories of workers, and, as a result, instability in the industry.

Rapid growth in the rate of surface mining for coal has caused many states to increase the rigor and complexity of their surface mining codes. The promulgation of Federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing Federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.

These explosives have a limited but definite field of usefulness; their properties have been described in the literature, which includes several publications of the Bureau of Mines, the most recent dealing with fire-retardant treatments.3/ It seems generally conceded that the outstanding hazards in the use of these explosives are their high inflammability and their relative sensitivity to mechanical action. Each of these topics has been studied, and some interesting practical results have been obtained. Treatments have been described[7] that render liquid-oxygen explosives prepared from granular carbonaceous absorbents practically immune to the action of igniting agents representing or exceeding practical hazards in violence.

INTRODUCTION Project Description The Silver Line is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line and is Boston?s newest transit service. Silver Line Phase I extends along Washington Street entirely on the surface in priority bus lanes from Dudley Station in Roxbury through the South End and Chinatown neighborhoods to downtown Boston. The Phase I opened in July 2002. Silver Line Phase II consists of an underground transit tunnel from South Station to the South Boston Waterfront with underground stations at Courthouse and World Trade Center to Silver Line Way east of D Street. Phase II continues through the Ted Williams Tunnel to all the terminals at Logan Airport, and on the surface to the Boston Marine Industrial Park and City Point. Phase II opened in December 2004. Silver Line Phase III is a one mile tunnel connection to the existing Phase II tunnel in the vicinity of South Station and will eventually portal on Tremont Street just north of Marginal Road. After leaving the portal, the buses will use dedicated bus only lanes on the surface roadway network to connect to the Phase I service. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the Silver Line upon completion of the Phase III project.

Input-output analysis is a major branch of quantitative economics, and is used to analyse the flow of goods and services between production sectors in a national economy. Its purpose is to determine the relative value-adding capacity of each sector. The model has also, in recent years, found increasing use in assessing the environmental and ecological impact of development projects. It has, however, never been applied to individual production facilities, such as large mines, which themselves have complex economic structures, through which there is a flow of goods and services. Conventional cost and accounting systems, as used on mines, treat production sectors as separate cost centres, and do not determine the inter-relationships between them. This can lead to incorrect conclusions on the relative value of sectors and their impact on the total economic performance of the facility. This paper explains the basic principles of input-output analysis, and presents an example of its application to a simplistic model of a mine, which is used in the absence of any real data. The paper concludes that, by forcing definition of the value adding function of each sector, input output analysis will facilitate control of inputs, or costs. This will result in optimal application of resources and exploitation of ore reserves. The authors realise the model needs to be tested on an operating mine, and hope this paper will result in an opportunity to do so. The DEEPMINE Collaborative Research Programme was established to create the technological and human resources platform that would make it possible to mine gold safely and profitably at depths of 3 to 5 km. The DEEPMINE Programme has four goals: to acquire knowledge of and develop appropriate technology for new ultra-deep level mines, to stimulate education and training, to establish a culture of innovation, and to encourage rapid technology transfer and implementation. The research programme was launched in July1998 and will be completed in March 2002, with the final year focusing on the transfer of knowledge to the industrial partners. DEEPMINE represents a new model for conducting mining research: it is driven by industry needs; emphasizes collaboration between industrial partners, research organizations and tertiary education institutions; and has a novel joint-funding mechanism. DEEPMINE has employed a range of vehicles to transfer knowledge to its industrial partners. Novel aspects include: (a) electronic publication of Summary Reports and Guideline Handbooks that seek to consolidate the huge body of knowledge comprehensively and concisely, (b) a series of DEEPMINE Schools designed to enable industry practitioners to apply the knowledge to their current work situation, and (c) Consultancy Reviews, where DEEPMINE specialists seek to apply knowledge to specific real problems on mines.

A complex network approach on a rough fracture is developed. In this manner, some hidden metric spaces (similarity measurements) between apertures profiles are set up and a general evolutionary network in two directions (in parallel and perpendicular to the shear direction) is constructed. Also, an algorithm (COmplex Networks on Apertures: CONA) is proposed in which evolving of a network is accomplished using preferential detachments and attachments of edges (based on a competition and game manner) while the number of nodes is fixed. Also, evolving of clustering coefficients and number of edges display similar patterns as well as are appeared in shear stress, hydraulic conductivity and dilation changes, which can be engaged to estimate shear strength distribution of asperities.

ABSTRACT A methodology based on a two-stage approach was developed for process technology selection. The first stage includes evaluation of available technologies, followed by shortlisting the best technologies based on mass and energy balance modelling, financial analysis, and risk analysis. The second stage involves detailed analysis using refined input data, mass and energy balance modelling, and capital and operating cost estimation, as well as a more detailed financial analysis. A case study covering the selection of ironmaking technologies for a company in the Russian Federation is presented to illustrate the critical elements of the methodology and the analysis process.

Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Importantly, the Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [United States Environ¬mental Protection Agency (USEPA), 1997. Superfund method for the determination of releasable asbestos in soils and bulk materials, EPA 540-R-97-028, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington], as modified by Berman and Kolk [Berman, D.W., Kolk, A.J., 2000. Modified elutriator method for the determination of asbestos in soils and bulk materials, Revision 1: Submitted to the U.S. Envi¬ronmental Protection Agency, Region 8, May 23, 2000] failed to generate any protocol fibers, i.e., fibers longer than 5 µm and thinner than 0.5 µm, from either the western coarse tailings samples or the single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "To improve the economic and environmental performance of underground mining operations, it is common practice to return the metallurgical waste material underground as backfill. This is called hydraulic backfill and is used to fill the mined-out areas not exposed to further mining. To provide mechanical support for underground mining a cemented backfill is normally used. Since its introduction, cemented backfill has allowed mining companies to increase their ore extraction and improve working and environmental conditions. However, cemented backfill represents up to 50% to 85% of the mine’s operating cost compared with 5% to 10% for hydraulic backfill.These economic pressures have led mining companies to carry out research into the partial or total replacement of cement using a variety of alternative materials. The materials are generally site-specific materials, readily available, and cost-effective relative to cement. Such investigations have led to reduced cost of many backfill mixes while maintaining, and in some cases improving, the physical properties of cemented backfill. However, in most cases, cement still remains an integral part of any binder combination. This can be attributed to the alternative binders investigated being either non-binding materials or capable of generating only low-strength backfills, except when used in conjunction with cement.This paper provides a historical review of backfilling binder materials and their characteristics. In particular, it reviews the many alternative materials that have been proposed to either partially or fully replace Portland cement as the main binder."

Issues between resource utilization and resource preservation often develop in connection with coal mining. One such conflict exists in eastern Utah where PacifiCorp and Energy West Mining Company are working with State and Federal agencies to address the resource recovery/resource preservation dispute. The effects of underground longwall coal mining on golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) cliff nesting sites have been studied at the Cottonwood Mine since 1986. Subsidence, escarpment spalling, and the nesting activities of the local eagle population were monitored.

Sustainable development has brought social, environmental and energy efficiency concerns together with management and governance of natural resources. Cement manufacturing, an energy- and natural resource-intensive industry, is adapting to meet sustainable development goals. Emission standards for cement plants and increasing energy costs have lead to changes in the use of natural resources and recycled materials. Utilizing pozzolans or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as mineral admixtures in blended cement or as a substitute for cement in concrete lowers energy costs and CO2 emissions. Although the western U.S. is rich in natural pozzolans, artificial products, particularly fly ash, have greater use as mineral admixtures. Pozzolans and SCMs have many beneficial properties, such as preventing alkali-silica reactivity, a common problem in the western U.S. Barriers exist for mineral admixtures in the cement and concrete industries because of past inconsistencies in quality or availability. New environmental regulations on the primary industries producing artificial mineral admixtures could adversely affect the quality and quantity of these materials in the future.

Keywords: Submerged-arc furnace, plasma furnace, d.c. furnace, scale up, Søderberg electrodes, smart grid, demand side management, load shedding This paper argues that the scale up of furnaces and the supply of electricity are going to be two major issues that will affect the ferro-alloy industry in the near future, and that economic factors will drive this development. The most common type of furnace for producing ferro-alloys at present is the submerged-arc furnace with three electrodes, fed from a three-phase a.c. electrical supply. The scale up of this technology has now reached a fundamental constraint, which is caused by the electrical reactance of the secondary circuit. If the economy of any further scale up is to be achieved in the future then a different technology will have to be used. The supply of electrical power in future is likely to become a more complex issue than it is at present. Existing submerged-arc furnaces tend to run at fairly steady loads, but the ability to swing the load under demand-side management may offer advantages, and may allow a furnace to get cheaper power from the organisations that supply this power. This will have to be counterbalanced against the nuisance factors incurred by having a varying load in the operation of the furnace. Various options are therefore discussed in this paper. The possibility of scale up of Søderberg electrodes is discussed, as well as the use of d.c. power and multiple electrodes. Some of the issues with load swinging are also examined. A particular scenario is also briefly presented to show that considerable further scale up of ferro-alloy furnaces is still possible.

Exploration record In preparing this paper, a list of world class discoveries prepared in 1983 has been updated. In both surveys, the following criteria were used in the definition of world class discoveries: • deposits that are continuously operated and consistently return a profit even in periods of low metal prices; • deposits large enough to significantly affect a medium sized corporation's profits; and • these deposits should be in the lower one-third cost per unit of metal produced for all similar deposits. Only 70 discoveries in the last 40 years qualified as world class deposits using these criteria. Unfortunately, this restricted population was too low to develop meaningful trends. The numbers were therefore enlarged to include all significant discoveries. The principal feature of a significant discovery is that its size and grade would yield more than $500 million in revenue using average metal prices for the last five years. A significant deposit should also meet some of the standards for a world class deposit. A tabulation of these deposits are shown in Table 1. The number of discoveries increased to 166 from 70 using the revised classification. The relationship between the number of discoveries per year and their location by continents was prepared from these data. Figure 1 shows the number of discoveries per year for the nonCommunist world. It also shows estimated and actual nonCommunist world exploration expenditures per year and the commodity price index. These data show that modern exploration started in the late 1940s, with the tempo picking up rapidly in the 1950s. The maximum discovery rate occurred in 1962. Thereafter, the discovery rate gradually declined to the present. This occurred despite a real increase in expenditures from about $200 million/a in 1955 (1982 constant dollars) to more than $900 million/a in 1980. Thus, these data suggest a significant decrease in the exploration success ratio (total exploration expenditures a year divided by the number of significant discoveries) in the last 20 years. As an example, $70 million was spent for each significant discovery in the early 1960s as compared with $225 million in the late 1970s (expressed in 1982 constant dollars). However, with the general declining trend of discoveries, one can perceive a more pronounced drop in 1973 and then a sudden increase in 1974, 1975, and 1976. This increase is probably related to the inflation of the 1970s that in turn created an environment for the explosion of commodity prices, as shown by the commodity price index on Fig. 1. Thereafter, the decline in discoveries resumed in 1975 until the present. Exploration performance by regions North American discoveries are shown in Fig. 2. The graph shows three pronounced high discovery peaks in 1962, 1975, and 1980-81.

Unfortunate occurrences resulting in injuries, loss of life, and destruction of property by explosion, fire, and other mishaps during shaft sinking focused the attention of the Bureau of Mines on the need for safety standards For such operations. Information Circular 7810 was published to meet that need. The current revision updates and replaces IC 7810. Several States have some rules and regulations applicable to local conditions, and several Bureau publications (including some now out of print) cover the hazards that may be encountered in shaft sinking. Certain requirements of the Federal Mine Safety Code and Federal Coal Mine Safety Act may be applied, but there are no definite, uniform standards that will guide those desiring to sink a shaft safely and bring about uniform safety inspections.

The South African Coal Industry had its beginnings in the Eastern Cape in 1859 when coal was mined to satisfy the fledgling settlements in the Eastern Cape. The growth in the industry was relatively slow up to the early 1970s when, firstly, the export business was expanded coupled with a major increase in the quantity of coal converted to liquid fuels and utilized for power generation. To meet this increased demand the industry developed many new operations employing the latest mining technology and systems. Coal production in South Africa reached 204 million tons in 1996 and revenue from exports reached R8 billion making it the second-largest foreign exchange earner after gold. In his address Rick P. Mohring describes the role coal plays in the international energy scene and outlines South Africa?s position as a producer and consumer of coal, and the challenges facing the industry. A wide range of steam-coals are produced to satisfy both the local market (power generation, coal conversion and the metallurgical industry) and the export steam-coal market. South Africa is in a unique position regarding the export market as it is still a relatively low-cost producer and is geographically well-placed to play in both the European and Far East markets. There are, however, a number of challenges facing the industry. To retain our competitiveness in the international market, ways of minimizing the cost pressures caused by high-cost inflation, increased environmental protection obligations and a decreasing quality resource base need to be sought. Locally the coal mining industry has a major role to play in Eskom?s goal of reducing the real cost of electricity by 15% in the next three years. Safety and health, productivity and the adaptation of the latest technology are issues being addressed by the industry to maintain its dominant position within the South African economy.
