The first part of this article is a review of industry techniques and styles during the past 50 years. It is followed by my career history during the same period. The second part covers my ideas about what works in mineral exploration. These include estimates about discovery costs, thoughts about education of explorationists, organization of exploration groups and my opinions about the relative value of exploration techniques. Evolution of exploration techniques [Table 1] shows the evolution of mineral exploration techniques and styles from 1950 to 2000. During the first half of that period, there was a progressive increase in exploration drilling. During the second half, there was a decrease in prospecting and an increase in high technology, indirect exploration and a rapid increase in discovery cost.

Surface deformation monitoring is required all over the mining industry. For example oil and gas companies need this information to support exploration and production activities and to detect impacts from surface subsidence of existing hydrocarbon fields. Also opencast mines require large area information of subsidence due to dewatering of the overburden. Because of this, a lot of surface deformations measurements with GPS or traditional geodetic measurement techniques have been conduced during the last decades. This paper presents the actual capabilities to analyze GPS data using the state of the art Bernese GPS Software for GPS post processing. A new way of monitoring subsidence is a combination of GPS and satellite InSAR data. Considering this it is hoped that a combined strategy will permit receiving overall more information by integrating high point density of InSAR and accuracy of GPS. DMT is one of the leading actors on GPS services especially for monitoring surface movements from underground activities e.g. mining, water pumping or oil and gas exploitation. The paper will discuss preferences and problems of this approach on results of a current project of DMT.

Regulatory processes associated with development of a world class lead-zinc mine, Red Dog Mine, in northwestern Alaska were reviewed and evaluated. Informal interviews with key project personnel, consultants, and agency field and permitting specialists provided perspective on the regulatory successes and failures of the project. Due to potential impacts to air quality, water quality, wetlands, and National Park lands, an Environmental Impact Statement was required. By developing a comprehensive baseline of information on the existing environment to aid in minimizing impacts during project siting/design and through regular coordination of evolving project plans with regulatory agencies, the mine developers were able to acquire necessary permits in a timely and cost effective manner. The only major exceptions occurred when inadequate information was collected on dispersal of airborne particulates, rates of surface water run-off, and groundwater quality. These deficiencies resulted in the need for design changes, unscheduled construction, additional environmental monitoring costs, and delays in issuance of the NPDES permit.

"1880s - Unmasking the Sudbury Basin Falconbridge Ltd. turned 60 in 1988 but its roots go back more than a century to the discovery and development of the mineral resources of the Sudbury Basin. Nickel was first identified in the area in 1856 but sustained exploration awaited the early 1880s and the advance of the CPR westward from Sudbury. Rock was laid bare in the right-of-way and by forest fires and logging. Reddish oxidized outcropping or ""gossan"" were exposed, heralding the presence of nickel as the shape of this astounding geological formation gradually began to emerge. Many great mines of the area were opened up in this period on the south rim of the Basin west of Sudbury. To the east the ore dips below overburden, however, and Falconbridge remained a mere dot on the map until the turn of the century when Thomas Edison detected a magnetic occurrence by dip needle."

An independent contractor is defined by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as ?any person, partnership, corporation, subsidiary of a corporation, firm, association or other organization that contracts to perform services or construction at a mine.? Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who work at coal mines and noncoal mines.

IN THE remarks which I am about to make concern¬ing the safety work of the Bureau of Mines, I want first of all to disengage myself from a disposition, which is frequently in evidence, to give spectacular emphasis to the hazards of mining operations. It is of the' utmost importance to the industrial welfare of our country that the enormous annual requirement of fuel be produced and be made available in our economic activities, with a minimum of distress and hardship. The safety of coal mining is a condition with which. we are all concerned in a fundamental way. And yet we should not rush to accept hastily conceived notions that laxity among employers in respect to safety measures exists to any outstanding degree. In fact in a large number of instances, the precautionary efforts of min¬ing companies, directed to the elimination of accidents are beyond all criticism, albeit the industry suffers in reputation from the carelessness of, its less effi¬cient constituents. The Bureau of Mines has been a leading influence in disseminating the doctrines of safety, in securing the cooperation of the miners themselves, and in stirring up ' the laggards, both among the employers and the employed. It is much to the interest of well-conducted mine operations that the industry, as a whole, observe safety regulations to the utmost.

Fluorapatite is an important constituent of the greater part of the basic and ultra-basic rock members of the Complex. The evidence for and role of primary magmatic processes in the development of concentric zones of dunite, pyroxenite, syenite and carbonatite and its consequent bearing on the distribution of apatite are discussed. The presence of at least two generations of each of the latter three rock types indicates the cyclical nature of magmatic activity. Pegmatitic-metasomatic phases corresponding to the major magmatic cycles resulted in emplacement of pegmatoidal assemblages. The abundance of apatite in the pegmatoid can be traced to the composition of its parent magma and its cooling history. Approximately 2.5 million tonnes of phosphate concentrate are produced annually from ores containing from 10 percent to 25 percent apatite.

During the summer and fall of 1948 the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, conducted 6xperiments in diamond core drilling in the Phosphoria formation in southeastern Idaho and southwestern Wyoming. Nearly all of the diamond core drilling in the Phosphoria formation has been done by mining companies interested in finding and developing phosphate-bearing beds amenable to stripping. The recovery of sludge; and enough core (usually 30 to 60 percent) to identify certain marker beds produced by current drilling practices meets both the primary requirement of mining companies in determining depth of overburden and their secondary need to determine the phosphate content of relatively thick minable units whose general composition and nature are already fairly well established.

Kalgoorlie is the main mining centre of the Western Australian Goldfields. Its famous Golden Mile' has been noted for the exceptional width and richness of its goldtelluride lodes. Since the mid-1890s production on the major mines has been maintained practically continuously.Rich ore, though not as plentiful or as rich as formerly, is still (1948) being mined in places. Unexplored areas still remain within the main auriferous belt which offer reasonable chances of success with intensive exploration.Much detailed information has accumulated in recent years through the geological mapping of underground workings by some of the larger mining companies. The purpose of this paper is to correlate observations made in most of the accessible old and recent workings in the mines of the Lake View and Star group and elsewhere.GENERAL GEOLOGYRock TypesThe rock formations are:-1. Fine-grained (older) greenstones, locally referred to as calc schists. There were originally pillow lavas and other flow rocks of basic composition, now extensively chloritised and/or carbonated. Pillows and fragmental flow- tops are recognisable. Intercalated with flows near the top of the series are several beds of sediments.2. Graphitic slates and other more arenaceous sediments.Although referred to as slates, they are rarely more than well-bedded shales with poorly developed fracture cleavage:Thick bands of felsitic rock are found in places.

The 350,000-barrel-per-day Bahamas Oil Refining Co remained closed throughout 1986. Financially troubled Charter Oil Co., joint owner of the refinery with Chevron Oil Bahamas Ltd., agreed in principle to have Chevron assume full ownership in return for canceling debts owed Chevron. Finalization of the agreement was pending at yearend. Burmah Oil Ltd. took more than a $30 million loss on the sale of its interest in South Riding Point Grand Bahama Transshipment Terminal to South Riding Point Terminal Holding Ltd.

Before the World War the use of zirconium and its compounds was largely experimental and confined almost wholly to Germany and Austria . Occasionally small lots of zirconium ore had been produced in the United States ( 1,000 pounds in 1869 , 26 tons in 1883 , and 3,000 pounds in 1903 ) and used (with monazite ) in the manufacture of various lighting devices , especially incandescent gas mantles ; but it was not until 1906 that the discovery of the natural zirconium oxide in large quantities near Sao Paulo , Brazil , first gave promise that a zirconium industry eventually might be developed . Edward Rietz , who worked the Brazilian deposits , interested German chemists in extending the use of zirconium , and by 1911 trade journals were listing German firms as manufacturers of compounds or products derived therefrom . For a time zirconia was one of the various oxides used in the Nernst lamp . It was used also for crucibles and hearths as refractory material ; in the manufacture of chemical utensils ; in enamels ; in the place of bismuth subnitrate for defining Röntgenray pictures of the stomach ; as a pigment ; in medicine ; and in a number of other ways . The Germans were credited also with producing a remarkable zirconium steel , which , it was claimed , was much superior to other alloy steels . During the World War the United States Government investigated the possibilities of zirconium , as well as those of other steel -hardening elements , and a large automobile manufacturer actually purchased a substantial quantity of ore with the purpose of employing zirconium in automobile steels . Immediately after the armistice the Government ceased its investigations ; but despite the difficulties experienced by various investigators in reaching concordant results , interest in the use of zirconium as a steel -hardening agent , as well as in other uses of the element and its compounds , continued . In 1918 the Foote Mineral Co. , which had been interested in zirconium for several years , was exploiting the deposit in Brazil formerly worked by the Germans and was supplying zirconia in the form of ore , brick , and cement for refractory and other purposes . About the same time the Electro Metallurgical Co. , which before the entrance of the United States into the war was experimenting with zirconium alloys , supplied in tonnage quantities the demand for these alloys . In 1919 it was reported that American manufacturers , after several years of research, were producing in commercial quantities pure zirconium oxide , which was finding a place in the manufacture of small refractory articles , scorifying dishes , crucibles , tubes , and one- piece furnace linings . In 1920 the lowering of the price of zirconium metal powder ( because of improved metallurgical methods ) promised the production of the metal on a semicommercial scale . In 1924 the Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. introduced a new opacifying agent , " Opax , " made from zircon . A year or two later some of the large pottery manufacturers became interested in the use of zirconium oxide as an opacifying agent , the increased production of titanium pigments having resulted in the production of zirconium as a by-product at a price that could compete with tin oxide . In 1928 it was reported that the industrial use of zirconium oxide was increasing steadily in the manufacture of brick , crucibles , and other refractory products , such as high- temperature cements . As we are all well aware, the demand for coal is increasing very rapidly. This makes the coal industry one of great opportunity for both the miner and the-supplier. Up until the middle 1960's, the price of coal had been one of the most stable of all commodities for the proceeding fifty years. In somewhat oversimplified terms this was because the inflationary tendencies had been offset by improved mine techniques and more efficient, more productive, and more reliable equipment; but, in the last seven years the price of coal has doubled. It is not the intent of this paper to discuss the many reasons for this price increase, but to show how the cost of hauling coal can be sharply decreased with a new truck concept. Not long ago a mining executive stated that all haulage trucks now available are basically the same. They look the same; they cost about the same; they have the same engine, power train, and tires; and, they have about the same operating cost. Truck size has increased which has reduced the number of drivers, but the purchase price and maintenance and repair costs have increased proportionally. Pits must be widened and loading shovels enlarged, out, all this has not reduced the cost of moving coal. Another executive said that he saw no advantage in buying new trucks because his people now know how to maintain and operate the ones they presently have. They have all the right spare parts along with a good maintenance program. Most replaceable parts of the trucks now in operation have been replaced and improved at least once and the trucks are now running better than when they were new. Besides, the trucks are no pretty well written off.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a computer-assisted Ground Control Management System (GCMS) for near realtime evaluation of underground coal mine ground conditions. The GCMS combines existing mine-monitoring system and sensor technology with automated computer analysis techniques to enhance the acquisition, analysis, and display of geostructural data. The GCMS, which combines mine structure data with other information, such as geologic conditions and mine layout, has provided information on mining-induced stress transfer and pressure buildup associated with several ground control events. The GCMS collects and analyzes shield-leg pressure, ground pressure, and strata movement data to evaluate the structural behavior of an active Western U.S. Iongwall coal mine. Field data are transmitted over a dedicated phone line to the USBM Denver Research Center (DRC) mine monitoring laboratory, 240 km (150 miles) from the mine site. Real-time collection, processing, and analysis of mine structure and shield pressure information has proved to be an effective method for near-face ground conditions while mining progresses. The GCMS provides the mine operator with information to rapidly identify and manage potentially hazardous ground conditions while mining is in progress.

"Minera Penmont’s La Herradura is a joint venture between Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. and Newmont Mining Corporation. The mine is located in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. La Herradura consists of an open pit mine with a two-stage crushing plant and heap leaching facility. Gold is recovered from the pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process; production began in July 1998. La Herradura produces about 130 000 oz gold per year and its treatment capacity is approximately 22 000 t/d. Ore mineralization occurs in a shear zone with quartz and native gold. Gold distribution is quite heterogeneous due to coarse visible gold, which in some cases ranges from 100 to 600 microns.Sampling and assaying protocols were established during exploration and prior to start-up of operations, based on nomographs developed from early heterogeneity tests. However, as the coarse gold problem became noticeable, it was necessary to develop new sampling protocols to have an acceptable relative standard deviation to control the fundamental error within ± 15%.An experimental program was developed and conducted on a selected ore block consisting of 195 blastholes; regular ore grade control procedures were applied to both sets of data to evaluate the difference in results between the protocol established prior to start-up of operations (existing) and the new protocol (leaching). In the existing protocol, sub-sampling is done through riffle splitters, and coning and quartering. Fire assaying was used to estimate the gold content on a 50 g sample. In the leaching protocol, a 12 000 g sample of bottle-rolled cyanide was leached, and the leach residue was assayed on a 50 g sample using fire assaying, and a weighted average total gold content was calculated. Currently, a new alternative method is being evaluated, where sub-sampling is done using rotary splitters, and fire assay on a 50 g sample; in this rotary sampling protocol and for comparison purposes, gold assays were also repeated using the leaching protocol.Test results were compared in three groups: < 0.3 g/t (below cut-off), 0.3 to 0.8 g/t, and >0.8 g/t. Overall, results show that the protocol established prior to start-up of operations underestimates the gold assays. Detailed technical results, alternative options, and their implications are discussed in the paper."

"Button" type ore from the Cason mine, Batesville, Ark., can be up-graded to plus-40-percent manganese by mineral-dressing procedures. A simple process including gravity concentration and. magnetic separation yielded more than 50-percent recovery of concentrates containing 38.1 to 40.6 percent manganese. These values in turn could be raised to 41.4 and 42.8 percent, respectively, upon sintering to conform to size specifications. The Bureau of Mines in the past has surveyed and tested many manganese ores and prospects in an endeavor to alleviate the shortage of manganese. The present period of emergency again emphasizes the strategic position of the metal, and manganese investigative work is being stressed to find new ore bodies and to apply newer beneficiation techniques to the known deposits.

International regulations exist to manage the concentrations of mycotoxins such as Ochratoxin A (OTA) and deoxynivalenol (DON) in grains and prevent health risks from excessive exposure to OTA and DON. Since the permitted levels of these mycotoxins are very low (existing maximum levels are in the range of 5 ppb for OTA and 1–2 ppm for DON), sampling for these mycotoxins is potentially challenging. Given that the distribution of infected kernels in a consignment of wheat can be highly heterogeneous, detection by current sampling methods is subject to a high variance. Furthermore, the concentrations of mycotoxins in individual kernels vary over orders of magnitude, intensifying the heterogeneity of the bulk grain.In these circumstances, there is much interest in developing sampling plans that inform regulatory agencies, and mitigate the risk of misclassifying grain shipments as compliant or non-compliant within the global grain trade, when correctly implemented.Experimental data from laboratory and field studies describing individual wheat kernel concentrations of OTA and DON were combined with experimental data describing the variance due to the analytical methods used for OTA and DON to calculate the sampling distribution for wheat having various levels of contamination. This work has focused on quantifying the heterogeneity of samples at the point of submission for analysis and within subsequent sample preparation to arrive at total sampling distributions that include uncertainties due to the intrinsic heterogeneity and the analytical uncertainties. The sampling uncertainty that relates to the difference between the primary sample analysis and the true lot analysis is not included as it has been dealt with elsewhere.CITATION:Lyman, G J and Tittlemier, S A, 2017. Over 60,000 multiple anchors have been used internationally since their introduction in the early 1990s, including 1000 in the United States. The multiple anchor system comprises a "multiple" of "unit" anchors installed within a single borehole - each unit anchor being staggered within the borehole length to mobilize its own capacity independently of the other unit anchors. These systems offer higher capacity than conventional anchors with identical bond lengths due to superior load transfer efficiency. The use of higher capacity anchors may allow reduction in the number of anchors required on a project, which results in time and cost benefits to the anchor installer, contractor, and the owner. Fully removable temporary multiple anchors are available, and have been used with consistent success. Three case histories are discussed highlighting the use of these systems

This paper describes the metallurgical processes at the 80 000tpd Ok Tedi Mining Limited concentrator, which treats copper- gold ore by single-stage crushing, SAG and ball milling and flotation to produce over 500 000tpa of concentrate. Plant and process developments, including installation of column cells, reduction of fluorine in concentrate, use of sulphidisation and process control improve- ments are also discussed.
