The occasional substandard performances of continuous flight auger in particular soil conditions have prompted the drilling rig manufacturer to improve the standard CFA in order to reduce its negative effects. A real improvement of interest was the launching of the double rotary CFA system. The promising features of the latter have incited the authors to implement an extensive experimental research on pile constructed using this type of technique but in the specific context of cohesive soils. Short-term static load tests were carried out on a total of 9 test piles of various installation techniques in order to compare the respective performances. The promising features of the double rotary CFA have incited the LCPC & Durmeyer Company to implement an extensive experimental research on this type of pile technique but in the specific context of cohesive soils and more particularly in clayey marls. After load tests completion the research has been completed by an excavation of the double rotary CFA piles. All the collected data concerning the implemented program are reported.

"Underground mining processes are dangerous. The design of mining equipment, which is able to cope with the hostile underground environment, is a challenge for all machine manufacturers. Presupposition for realizing the vision of SANDVIK for zero harm for working with SANDVIK equipment is the installation of the appropriate processes. Into the product engineering and product development processes of Sandvik Mining and Construction, a specific "Product Safety Process" has been integrated, where all safety related activities like identification of all life cycle hazards, risk management and safety verification / validation are planned, performed and documented. Product safety shall be „designed into" the products. Therefore, specific research activities have been started, to address the safety and health related topics for the development and for the engineering of SANDVIK mining machines."

"The IREDES1 Special Interest Group (SIG) for drill rigs has been active since its launch during MineExpo 2000 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. SIG for drill rigs is responsible for the development of an IREDES drill rig profile, including the exchange of production planning, performance, and quality reporting data between various kinds of drill rigs and the databases used by the operating mine. During 2001, a first draft of the drill rigs profile was jointly prepared by drill rig suppliers, mining companies, and third-party suppliers and reviewed during several SIG meetings. The profile for prototyping projects was released in mid-2002; the first official IREDES release was based on feedback received from these projects.In 2002, LKAB and Atlas Copco decided to carry out an IREDES prototyping project using the Simba L6C production drill rig. The goal was to verify the drill rig profile and identify potential problems prior to the official release. This was done by implementing the IREDES prototype version into LKAB’s production planning and Simba rig control systems. The Simba rig control system was designed to handle drill plan and logging information coming from the mine planning system. In parallel to this, the mine production system was adapted for drill plan export and logging data import in IREDES format.This paper presents the most recent results of the IREDES prototyping project. Results from late 2002 show that the basic architecture of the drill rig profile works and that a common language for data exchange, IREDES, will be a central requirement for future mine automation.As a result of the IREDES prototyping project, the IREDES standard was approved at the IREDES board meeting held at the 2003 CIM Annual Conference and Exhibition. Soon thereafter, IREDES compliant products, including drill rigs and mine production planning systems, were put on the market."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effect of ventilation on the performance of automatic sprinkler systems in extinguishing wood crib fires. Experiments were conducted at airflows of 0, 0.76, 1.5, 2.5, and 4.1 m/s. Two experiments were conducted at each airflow, using 74° C fast response pendent sprinklers in one experiment and 74° C fast response horizontal sidewall sprinklers in the other experiment. In the experiments at airflows of 0 and 0.76 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 m upstream and downstream of the fire. The sprinkler directly above the fire was the only sprinkler to operate with no discernible difference in the suppression capability of the pendent and horizontal sidewall sprinklers. In the experiments at airflows of 1.5 and 2.5 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 and 4.8 m downstream of the fire. The sprinkler located 2.4 m downstream was the only sprinkler to operate with the horizontal sidewall sprinkler being more effective in extinguishing the wood crib fire. The average response times of the sprinklers at airflows of 0.76, 1.5, and 2.5 m/s were 3-1/2 times the average response time of the sprinklers at 0 m/s. The results of this study will help enhance the safety of the nation's miners.

A series of experiments were undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the emission products of several types of conveyor belting and other combustible materials found in mines. These experiments were conducted under intermediate-scale, simulated mine conditions to determine smoke characteristics and gas concentrations. From these determinations, heat-release rates, particle sizes, obscuration rates, combustion yields, and production constants were calculated. Three types of belts were investigated: chloroprene, also known as neoprene (NP); polyvinyl chloride (PVC); and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The belts were designated as ignitable or self-extinguishing depending on the length of the burning time and the subsequent combustion products. Under these experimental conditions, the SBR belts were the easiest to ignite. The PVC and NP belts tended to self- extinguish within a few minutes after ignition, but were still capable of maintaining a brief flaming period. These conveyor belt combustion results are compared with previous analyses of wood, transformer fluid, and coal fires. Together they form a data base by which findings from future experiments with other mine combustibles can be compared.

Molybdenum has been successfully cast into static and rotating molds in conventional equipment used for casting titanium and zirconium. Melting was accomplished by using an arc potential of 36 to 40 volts with a current of 10,000 amperes. Pouring efficiency, after a skull had been formed in the crucible, averaged 70 percent. Techniques are described by which four successful castings were made. Tensile properties on specimens cut from one centrifugally cast tube averaged: Tensile strength, 39,800 p.s.i.; yield strength (0.1 pct. offset), 35,300 p.s.i.; elongation, nil; reduction in area, nil; impact strength, 2 ft.-lb.; hardness DPH (diamond pyramid hardness) 180. Mold reaction was not evident in shapes cast in machined graphite. This was not true, however, for rammed graphitic-base molds.

For many tunneling, deep shaft and deep excavation projects ground freezing is one of the best if not the only technique available to create a watertight and load bearing temporary support system in soft ground conditions. When appropriate attention is given to the details of the ground freezing system design, ground freezing is a very safe method and is economically viable with competing techniques and combinations of techniques. Recent innovative uses of the technique in Europe are highlighted in this paper and compared with current uses in North America.

Bauxite can be regarded as a mixture of hydrated aluminium oxides the predominant constituent - and oxides of iron and titanium, silica and silicates. Heterogeneous and non-crystaline, most bauxites vary in average composition from one deposit to another both in terns of impurities as well as the proportion of Gibbsita and the Monohydrates Diaspore and Boehmite. Iron levels (as Fe2O3) can vary from less than 1% to as high as 30% with the alumina content ranging from 40 to 6o%,. Gore than 90% of all bauxite mined in Guyana is used as feed for the - production of refractory grade calcined bauxite. There are -however, several speciality grades used in various industrial applications and these are characterised by the quality of the bauxite in particular ;,with regards to iron and silica levels which generally have to be low. The main speciality grades are designated Refractory, Abrasive and Chemical. Bauxitte is also used in the production of nigh alumina cements,, activated bauxite end in the manufacture of electrical insulators.

DURING the smelting of the sulfide ores of copper, nickel, and certain other metals, a matte phase is formed. For a better understanding of the physico-chemical properties of mattes, binary systems such as Cu-S, Ni-S, Fe-S, and so forth, should be studied, especially in the vicinity of liquid compounds such as Cu2S, Ni3S2, FeS, and so forth. These compounds are relatively stable in the solid state although they can exhibit appreciable deviations from stoichiometry. With small deviations from stoichiometry there are large changes in the activity of both sulfur and metal this is a characteristic of both solid and liquid sul-fides near the stoichiometric compositions. In the vicinityof molten Cu2S,1 for instance, the activity of sulfur increases about 100 times for a 0.012 increase in the mole fraction of sulfur and, correspondingly, the activity of copper decreases greatly. In this sens the minor deviations from stoichiometry should be carefully taken into account in studies of such metal-sulfur melts. Metal-sulfur melts may be considered to have properties intermediate between metallic solutions and molten salts, i.e., neither entirely metallic nor entirely ionic. The radius of the ion sZ- is 1.84 as compared with 1.04? for a single bond covalent s.2 It is therefore inferred that when the sulfur is more ionic its partial molar volume is larger, although metal-metal, metal-sulfur, and sulfur-sulfur interactions may bring about further complexities. Thus, it is to be expected that the molar volumes, which are derived from density-composition relations, will help in resolving the structure of the melts. In this study the maximum bubble pressure method with bubbling gases of H2, H2S, and Ar, .was employed to measure the density. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Silver of 99.95 pct purity was melted in an alumina crucible and hydrogen gas was then bubbled through the liquid for the deoxidation. In preparation of Cu2S, electrolytic copper powder (>99.9 pct Cu) was mixed with precipitated sulfur and heated to 1200°C in an alumina crucible under a hydrogen atmosphere. Mixtures having the approximate compositions FeS and Ni3S2 were prepared by heating reagent grade electrolytic iron or reduced nickel powder with precipitated sulfur under a hydrogen atmosphere. The H2S gas was of 98.5 pct purity, the impurities being mostly CO2 and CS2 which hardly contaminate the melts. Apparatus. The crucible system is shown schematically in Fig. 1. To minimize the variation of melt composition during a density measurement, the apparatus was designed in such a way that either Ar, H2, H2S, or mixtures of these gases could be used as the bubbling gas. When the melt had a high partial pressure of sulfur, H2S gas was used. When the partial pressure of sulfur was so low that oxygen might dissolve in the melt, the use of H2 was preferred. In intermediate cases, argon or mixtures of H2-H2S were used. Density of Dibutylphtalate. Dibutylphtalate was used as the manometer fluid. Relative to distilled water, the density of the dibutylphtalate, pdib g per cc, was measured and found to be: pdib (25°C) = 1.046 i 0.002. The mining industry continues to underpin the regional economy. Australia, benefiting from a weak currency, receives 27% of the total goods export value from non-energy mining lead by aluminium, iron ore, gold and nickel. Consolidation has eliminated CRA, Comalco, North, Savage, Acacia, Ashton, Great Central, Aberfoyle, Placer Pacific, Plutonic, Normandy and RGC leaving Rio Tinto, BHP-Billiton, WMC, MIM and, increasingly, the South African companies Anglo, Gold Fields and Harmony as dominant players. Exploration stagnates with expenditure dropping 40% in Australia and 80% in PNG from peak levels. Major new regional developments include Rio’s West Angles iron ore project, Newcrest’s Ridgeway gold-copper mine and Inco’s Goro nickel-cobalt project in New Caledonia.

In August 2006 a technical alliance was formed between Orica Mining Services and Century Mine to provide blasting solutions. The alliance is in the form of a Rock to Specification (R2S™) service, one of Orica’s Blast Based Services (BBS™). The ultimate goal was to facilitate the rapid expansion of material movement from 26 to 41M m3 (34 to 53M yd3) per annum while maintaining a reliable ore supply to the mill.

To simplify programming, image analyzers commonly measure either linear intercepts or the areas of particles and grains to determine liberation based on polished section mounts. However, the concentration of minerals by flotation is based on reagents that interact with the exposed surfaces of the minerals. Thus, it is often perceived that image analyzers should measure the perimeter of the mineral of interest in the ore particles. A comparative liberation study of thirteen samples collected from a flotation plant processing a complex base metal sulfide ore showed that the liberation of the ore minerals determined by area measurements is very similar to the liberation determined by the exposed perimeters. The liberation determined by exposed perimeters is more appropriate only for those cases where the mineral texture is so complex that it is retained in the small particles generated in conventional grinding operations.

This paper introduces the development and application of a new cable anchor - Cable-Lok for pre-stressed cable bolting in mines. Cable-Lok is a spring-loaded cable anchor suitable for the drill hole diameter of 50 and 65 mm (2" and 2.5") in medium soft rock to hard rocks. The cable anchor is automatically set on installation and the cable can be tensioned immediately to provide active and primary support throughout its length. Post-grouting can be conducted independently. In comparison with the conventional cable bolting, Cable-Lok anchor will greatly speed-up the cable bolting circle and decreases the cost of cable bolting. Cable bolting anchored with Cable-Lok anchor has wide application in mines, e.g. pre-stressed cable bolting in large span drifts and intersections for permanent rock support, or in hanging walls or stopes for temporary support, or cable lace anchoring etc. This paper introduces the principle of pre-stressed cable bolting and the specifications of the Cable-Lok anchor, presented the testing results in laboratory and the application cases in mines.

The Saint Joseph Hospital of Bellingham is located on a site underlain by glacial outwash. The construction of a five-story tower addition above an existing two-story wing was supported by five large trusses that impose a 1600 kips (7117 kN) column load on five pile caps in the courtyard of the hospital and on the new pile caps inside the existing MRI laboratory. The exterior columns of the trusses and the new parking garage addition were supported on conventional auger cast piles installed with conventional equipment. Helical Pulldown® micropiles were selected for use in the courtyard and the MRI laboratory because lightweight installation equipment (maximum unit weight of 7.5 kips (33.3 kN)) had to be used and it was required that no spoils be produced. The installation equipment was lifted into the courtyard by the jobsite crane. Sixty Helical Pulldown micropiles were installed for the pile caps in the courtyard. The pile caps inside the hospital were supported on 240 Helical Pulldown micropiles. Initial compression test indicated an allowable load for the micropiles to be 55 kips (244 kN). However, retest at a later date resulted in an increased allowed design load to be 85 kips (378kN) reducing the number of micropiles required by more than fifteen percent.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an inventory of the prospects and mineral resources in the Scodies RARE II area (No. 5212) in 1982. No mineral production is recorded from the area, and no mines are being developed. The Scodies RARE II area is comprised primarily of light colored granodiorite with minor inclusions of mafic granitic rocks. Late stage differentiates of magmas resulted in quartz veins and pods. Metasedimentary rocks which have been mineralized in some parts of the Sierra Nevada were not observed within the study area during this investigation but small inclusions have been reported.
