The development of the blast furnace over the last years lead to a substantial increase in production capacity and productivity. This development triggered an evolution of the cooling systems in order to cope with the raising heat loads. The excellent protection of the shell by copper staves allowed blast furnace operators to achieve campaign lifetimes of more than 20 years. However in recent years some blast furnaces have experienced severe wear of the copper staves due to abrasion. The influences of the blast furnace design as well as of the operation conditions on this premature wear have been analysed and the mechanisms leading to the wear will be explained. New developments in the copper stave technology are part of the solution for avoiding premature wear during periods with less favourable conditions. The protection mechanisms made available by the new design extend the inherent protection mechanisms of copper staves to these periods. BFXpert® system is the ideal tool for the monitoring of the process data, the process models and the recommendations given by Sachem® support the operator in choosing efficient operation points. The charging with a Bell Less Top® (BLT) allows an accurate controlling of the blast furnace with regard to the optimization of the gas distribution. High performance operation together with long campaign lifetimes are thus made possible.

Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) can be used to monitor electrostatic charges on the surfaces of materials. In this paper, we describe the use of KPFM to evaluate the electrostatic effect induced by silver nanoparticles incorporated as clusters in diamond-like carbon (DLC) films, before and after scratching. The results are compared to those obtained for DLC films without silver nanoparticles. Raman spectroscopy was used to identify the DLC signature, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was used to confirm the presence of silver in the film. The morphology of the DLC film containing silver was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The findings suggest that the incorporation of silver nanoparticles in amorphous materials could offer new options for electrostatic energy storage on the surfaces of these materials.

A new method of manufacturing the wavy-tilt-dam(WTD) mechanical seal has been mentioned. In this method, the special equipment is designed to provide a predetermined force to external and inner circular surface of the ring. After milling the end face of the seal by grinding miller and releasing the preload, the wavy-tilt-dam can be done on the seal surface. In this paper, a prediction model is built up to investigate the relationship between the predetermined force and the deformation on the surface of the ring by using ANSYS software. A WTD ring is manufactured by this method which approves that the prediction model is in accord with the real process and this manufacturing method of the WTD mechanical seal is a proper choice.

We are at the beginning of an era of profound transformation and human progress — a new industrial revolution. This “Automation of Everything” era will be brought about by digital interfaces, data analysis and control of the physical world through networks employing the Nokia Bell Labs Future X1 architecture — networks to support the digitization and connection of everything and everyone with the goal of automating much of life. The interconnection of robots, machines, drones, sensors, processing platforms and people through Future X networks will provide transformative tools for the automation and optimization of factories and warehouses, ports, electric grids, transportation networks, food, healthcare, construction, logistics and supply chain, emergency response, mining, and other physical industries. To date, the level of automation has been modest at best. Automating these physical industries — industries that account for 70 percent of the US Gross Domestic Product, for example — has the potential to drive significant increases in the world’s economic productivity.2 Realizing the potential of this next industrial revolution will require billions of wirelessly connected endpoints for high fidelity physical-to-digital conversion, millisecond response times to tightly control and coordinate machines and robots, and intelligent analysis to optimize real-time decisions — tasks beyond the reach of current networks. Increased levels of automation are already being achieved through the use of 4G advanced wireless access technologies. The untethering of sensors and actuators in industrial environments through the low-latency, high-bandwidth, high-reliability, and massive scale provided by 5G wireless access will complete this evolution, providing an unprecedented ability to digitize, analyze, comprehend and manipulate the physical world at a scale never previously thought possible. These new capabilities will enable us to create digital models of the physical world with ever higher levels of fidelity, further enhancing our ability to improve operational efficiencies and increase productivity and worker safety. Doing this will require a dramatic evolution in network architecture toward massively distributed cloud control and baseband capacity to achieve the required ultra-low latency and ultra-high bandwidth for industrial and infrastructure automation services — the Future X architecture. In early 2019, Nokia Bell Labs will publish a sequel to “The Future X Network: A Bell Labs Perspective”. “Future X for Industries: A Nokia Bell Labs Perspective” will explore how the Future X architecture will automate many of the world’s physical industries, including chapters devoted to electric power, cities, rail, mining, public safety, manufacturing, ports, logistics and supply chain, and an overarching chapter devoted to securing this highly automated world. In 2013, Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereafter referred to as NSENGI), Tenova HYL and Danieli have entered into an agreement to combine ENERGION DR technology into blast furnace technology and/or with syngas technologies. This new alliance will allow the three companies to combine research and development activities with their respective expertise in ENERGIRON DR technology, Blast Furnace technology and Syngas (by-pro gas and coal gasification) technology, with the ultimate objective to develop breakthrough iron making technologies and create such EPC projects. This paper introduces the concepts and the features of our breakthrough technologies of combining of ENERGIRON DR technology, Blast Furnace technology and Syngas technology.

Danieli complemented its wide range of production plants for the iron and steel industry with a further step upstream into iron ore pelletizing and beneficiation. Danieli has engineered and constructed a state of the art and fully automated pilot plant facility – pot grate and sinter box – at Altos Hornos de Mexico S.A. (AHMSA) Pelletizing Plant, Monclova, Mexico. Installation and commissioning were completed in October 2009. Key features of the pot grate include the avoidance of the need for operator intervention during the test, automatic system preheat, absence of dead time, heat recuperation system with an air/air heat exchanger, oxygen control in preheating and firing with zirconia oxygen analyzer, possibility to test deep beds up to 625 mm. A series of projects have been accomplished by AHMSA availing of the pot grate facility with the aim to enhance pellet plant productivity and to reduce operating costs. The results obtained by use of Danieli pot grate combined with the experience and skill of plant operators has shown significant technical and economical benefits thus fully justifying the initial investment made by AHMSA and confirming the importance of having an in-house testing facility in order to optimize industrial plant operations.

Flexibility in terms of producing high sophisticated products with an exceptional wide range of properties and dimensions requires physical based process models for the generation of optimal set points. Therefore SMS applies since many years an integrated PSC® (pass schedule model), PCFC® (profile, contour and flatness model) and CSC (cooling section control) for the use in hot strip mills, CSP® plants and plate mills offering best possible product tolerances. Focus during the development of the model was made on the best possible physical description of the rolling process to minimize the need of complex adaptation algorithms. As an addition SMS has also developed a microstructure model to ensure the quality control with respect to mechanical properties and to save up the needs of taking samples. Beside of this the modular design of the Microstructure and Material Property Model (MPM) offers additional benefits to improve the accuracy of the other models, e. g. the recrystallization model in the finishing mill. Using the results of that model strain hardening or softening effects during rolling can be predicted and an optimum pass schedule can be calculated to avoid rolling stability problems related to phase transformation.

Nowadays, many companies have the idea where to be occupied is to be productive, this work aims to show with practical tests that to get the best performance of the machine with tools of high performance and yield is the best option for a company to become productive and economic at the same time . The company targeted for this work began its activities in the Metallurgical branch more than 75 years, Metisa Metalúrgica Timboense serves the national and international market with several product lines. Due to its large backlog of overdue hours, a job was started in the tooling sector to make the process faster and more economical. In this context, this work has as general objective the restructuring of the critical processes of the tooling sector, aiming at a better functioning of the organization and greater satisfaction of its direct clients. In addition, this work has specific objectives, such as (1) application of high performance tools, (2) analysis and improvement of existing processes, development and application of new processes, (3) (High Speed Machining) (4) production monitoring and technical support for maintenance of new processes. Thus, after the implementation of the process improvements, it was possible to obtain a reduction of 81% in the final cost and 80.5% in the process time. In addition, with some of the new processes deployed, there was a reduction in the use of personal resources and better management of machine hour load and a significant gain in the sector response time.

The present work is a part of a comprehensive program that aims to evaluate the girth welding procedures for heavy wall API 5L X65 pipes produced for sour service applications. This article describes the results of toughness, strength and sour resistance of girth welds produced with different welding consumables. The methodology applied included girth welds production with GTAW process for root pass using ER70S-6 consumable and FCAW process for filling passes using E71T- 1CJ and E91T1-GM-H4 consumables. Mechanical tests of Charpy, CTOD, tensile, hardness and stress corrosion cracking were also performed. The E71T-1CJ resulted in a girth weld with tensile and yield strength around 7% lower than the pipe. However, according to the papers analyzed at this study, a value up to 10% of undermatching could be acceptable. The CTOD and Charpy tests showed good toughness and weld metal embrittlement was not observed. The hardness and the stress corrosion cracking tests demonstrated that the consumable ER70S-6 is suitable for sour service. All properties evaluated met the requirements specified by the onshore pipeline standards, showing that the consumables ER70S-6, E71T-1CJ and E91T1-GM-H4 are suitable for the welding of heavy wall X65 pipe with sour service and toughness requirements. If an overmatching is required, the E91T1-GMH4 shall be used to assure a strength overmatching and prevent plastic strain concentration at the weld metal. The results provided by this paper can be used for consumable selection and for welding procedure qualification of pipelines construction when heavy wall API 5L X65 are used for sour gas transportation.

The pelletizing process allows inputs to be added to the mixture resulting in better control of the physical, chemical and metallurgical characteristics desired by the pellet. Anthracite is incorporated as input of the pellets as an alternative form of fuel, making the burning more homogeneous, "from the inside out", benefiting the physical resistance of the burned pellets and aiming to reduce the cost of natural gas during the stage of hardening. However, the amount of anthracite should not exceed an optimum value, which may cause an adverse effect on the physical quality of the pellets. Hence, it is very important an accurate control of the coal dosage. Based on that, the present study presents the implementation of a control using advanced control system that applies, using linear regression of historical data, the optimum relationship between anthracite and ore (respecting the physical quality of the pellets during processing in pelletizing furnaces). After the implementation of this control, it was possible to adjust the anthracite dosage automatically, measured in percentage of fixed carbon in the mixture, when the process is able, thus reducing the specific consumption of natural gas.

In mid-2015 the steel industry faced a strong crisis due to the weak performance of the Brazilian economy and the persistent entry of Chinese steel into Brazilian territory. This situation demanded that Brazilian steelmakers seek to develop products to meet new export markets. within the volume of exports possible are the rebars, where its applications are in the construction industry. One of the largest importers is Peru which has a large percentage of this export volume. This market demands as a priority requirement the surface quality of blue condition (low oxidation index) and mechanical properties normative.in order to meet the items required by the customer at a competitive cost, a vanadium microalloyed steel was applied to the hot rolling process without heat treatment after the last rolling pass. Where the great challenge was to achieve a high level of stretching without compromising the minimum limits of tensile strength. Assuming that the steel used is the correct one interventions were made on rolling parameters such as set-point temperature, residence time of pieces in the furnace, linear mass and rolling speed. All the changes made were based on statistical tools and practical tests. Finally, with the execution of actions generated from the statistical analyzes and tests it was possible to reduce process losses by 96%.

In 2005, with the significant reduction of iron content in the “Quadrilátero Ferrífero” reserves, Vale began the study of alternatives for the tailings disposal in other structures, that are not tailings dams. In 2011, after bench-scale and pilot-scale tests, it was defined to implement the project "Alternative methods for tailings disposal", including the construction of experimental drainage piles to get mineral and geotechnical process parameters for future projects. The result of this study shows that it is technically possible to replace traditional tailings disposal (dams), to dry stacking, with the proportion up to 20% of ultrafine tailings in the total tailings composition, however, this study is in evolution and the scale of the project / pile is being gradually increased to guarantee a good performance for the mineral and geotechnical process.

Currently there is a constant and essential concern of preserving nature. Over the years the concern with the environment is increasing, new environmental laws are emerging and being applied more rigorously and consequently emerge economic needs and mineral processing practices and other materials. In this sense briquetting becomes an alternative to fine particles agglomeration by means of pressure and or temperature, with the aid or not of a binder, which allows to get a product not only compressed, which presents shape, size, and adequate mechanical properties. The reduction in volume of the material in some cases (beyond the technological benefits) also allows fine materials can be transported and stored more economically, safely and effectively. The production of coke is greater as the content of better coking coal is, thus he low capacity coking coal is not much used in coke ovens. This research aims to demonstrate that briquetting of mineral coals with low coking coal capacity is possible, additionally allows increased coke production, obtaining then a better yield of coke. Basically they take advantage of low price of no coking coals without changing the quality of the coke produced. Anyway, briquetting became a smart alternative to aggregate values, economy and care for the environment.

O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar o efeito da pulsação de corrente sobre a microestrutura da zona fundida de soldas dissimilares entre o aço inoxidável ferrítico AISI 444 e o austenítico AISI 316L. Chapas dos referidos aços foram unidas pelo processo de soldagem TIG. As soldagens foram realizadas variando-se a frequência de pulsação de 2 a 8 Hz e sem pulsação, mantendo-se constante a energia de soldagem. A caracterização microestrutural foi realizada por meio de microscopia óptica, MEV, EDS e EBSD. Os resultados mostraram haver um efeito da frequência de pulsação sobre a homogeneidade e microestrutura final da zona fundida.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo aumentar o desempenho dos cilindros de trabalho utilizados para laminação de tiras a frio. A motivação deste é a busca por competitividade do processo de laminação por meio da redução de seus custos e que neste caso será focado no consumo de cilindros, ferramenta que afeta diretamente no custo final do produto laminado. Para atender a esse objetivo foram conduzidas três atividades no laminador de tiras a frio da CSN, dedicado a produção de material para indústria automobilística, as quais foram: i) investigação detalhada do comportamento do cilindro durante sua aplicação o que consiste em identificar as principais causas de consumo dos cilindros que prejudicam seu desempenho. ii) desenvolver o processo de fabricação dos cilindros Villares Rolls para que possam oferecer as propriedades mecânicas adequadas para as causas de consumo. iii) fabricar cilindros para teste e avaliar seu desempenho no laminador, investigando-os para identificar pontos de melhoria. Os resultados indicam que as mudanças propostas e realizadas nos cilindros atendem às solicitações durante sua utilização no laminador uma vez que seu desempenho tem sido 22% superior quando comparado àquelas praticadas atualmente.

Componentes tubulares de parede fina têm aplicações em diversas áreas industriais, na forma de trocadores de calor, amortecedores de impacto, sistemas de fixação, absorvedores de energia, pré-formas para outros processos de conformação mecânica, etc. Neste trabalho é apresentado um estudo de natureza teórico-experimental envolvendo o processo de expansão de extremidades de tubos. Busca-se determinar os parâmetros que governam o mesmo, suas limitações e se a conformação em matriz pode ser uma alternativa viável a processos mais complexos, como por exemplo, hidroconformação. É feita a caracterização do material (uma liga de alumínio ABNT 6061) através do levantamento de curvas de escoamento, perfis de microdureza Vickers, e deformabilidade quanto ao surgimento de trincas e de instabilidade plástica (flamblagem). Ao final são conduzidas simulações através de elementos finitos e experimentos do processo de expansão. São variadas características geométricas dos tubos e das ferramentas e o estado do material (diferentes tratamentos térmicos).

Este artigo tem como finalidade demonstrar o cenário evolutivo da expedição ferroviária de produtos siderúrgicos da ArcelorMittal Tubarão, focado na eficiência operacional e no atendimento à Clientes. Neste documento, apresentaremos a estrutura de pátios e equipamentos, o status anterior do “share” de expedição nos modais terrestres e os motivadores do processo de mudança. Em seguida, iremos apresentar as melhorias e inovações implantadas em nossos processos internos e externos, da cadeia logística de atendimento à Clientes. Ao final, demonstraremos a evolução da participação do modal ferroviário no “share” de expedição, bem como os ganhos capturados através da elevação dessa participação.

ArcelorMittal's pickling and cold rolling line has been demanded to increase production since the installation of equipments in 2015. In addition to the improvement in productivity related to these new equipment, one of them the automatic surface inspection system (SIAS), work has also been developed in other equipment seeking improvement of production indicators. The present article exposes the actions and gains that were achieved with actions on two equipments in the same section as the Side Trimmer. The first one deals with the optimization of time gains with sequencing adjustments without financial contribution, using only internal labor seeking reduction of unproductive times by adjustments of the side trimmer in the cold strip mill. The second item discussed demonstrates the actions and the gains generated due to the availability of new resources (installation of SIAS equipment), the optimization of these resources seeking a focus on the reduction of ruptures in the tandem cold mill, configuring the same in the aid of the identification of critical defects and also in the automatic speed reduction action of the tandem cold mill in defects considered serious. In both cases the intention was to improve production, seeking to improve the results of the section and the line.
