A combination of two factors in addition to the current Federal drilling and price regulations reduced by 120 from I942 the number of new wells completed in southwestern Pennsylvania during the year. No new prospective area was found comparable to the Armbrust gas pool, Westmoreland Co., which accounted for a seventh of the last year's drilling, and it is considered doubtful whether, even if such a field had been discovered, the drilling contractors, who have been seriously affected by the manpower shortage, could have drilled many more wells than they did during the year. New wells totaling 445 were completed for a combined footage of over 1,250,000 Dry holes numbered 131 and had a footage of nearly 400,000. Old wells drilled deeper total 55, of which 17 were found nonproductive. Shallow Development Oil Oil completions yielded an initial of only slightly over one hundred barrels from 21 wells for about the same per well average as that of a year ago. However, 65 bbl. of this total came from two wells in two new strikes. The footage drilled of nearly 33,000 gives an average of nearly I00 ft. less per well than a year ago. Two old wells drilled deeper had a combined initial of only 4 bbl. The largest oil well of the year, 40 bbl., was found in the Speechley (U. Dev.) sand at a depth of 3492 ft. in German township, Fayette County. The location is several miles east of the nearest oil production hut as the area that could be occupied by a pool is fairly well delimited by drilling, the extent of this production would not appear to be large. The other notable oil production was found in the Dunkard (Penna.) sand, Cumberland township, Greene County, at a depth of 1065 ft. Here the first well had an initial of g bbl. and the second 25 bbl. However, a third proved dry, and as this area is also delimited by drilling, the pool doubtless will be of small area. Gas Gas completions yielded an initial of slightly over one hundred million cubic feet per day and new wells, totaling 303, account for all but four million of this volume. Old wells drilled deeper, numbering 35, found gas. The per well average in new drilling of approximately 320 M cu. ft. is nearly 165 M cu. ft. less than a year ago and the total footage is slightly over 830,000, which is about a quarter of a million feet less than in 1942. Average rock pressure of new completions is approximately 365 lb. per sq. in. The entire volume of new production is from the Upper Devonian or higher stratigraphic horizons. In Allegheny County, the grestest activity was in Forward and Plum townships. Wells there account for more than one half the completions. One large well was drilled in Forward township and an open flow of 3.623 million cubic feet was found in an old Gantz (U. Dev.) sand area. The top of the sand was encountered

The Altar district, State of Sonora, Mexico, is for the most part a desert with but little rain-fall and few running streams. On account of this scarcity of water it is necessary for the natives to " dry-wash" the placer-gravel, and the object of the present gaper is to describe some of the more commoil Mexican dry-mashing devices. My observations were confined to a property known as Las Palomas placers, 15 miles from the Gulf of California and about 150 miles south of the United States border; a brief description of which property may be of interest as illustrating what is, perhaps, a typical Sonora dry placer. It is said that as long as a century ago the Yaqui Indians discovered rich cement-gravel, known as argo masa, at Las Palomas, and that there has been a more or less steady production of gold from the property ever since. The argo masa, is a fairly-coarse gravel, the pebbles being quite firmly held together with a lime cement. Gold is scattered through this cement in particles ranging from fine specks to pieces several grams in weight, and occasional large nuggets are encountered. The contents vary so widely that it is difficult to estimate the average value, but returns of from $10 to $50 per cubic yard are common, and it is doubtful if the Indians considered anything less than from $4 to $5 a yard as "pay dirt.'' This ar-90 masa, occurs in channels varying in thickness from a few inches to several feet, and in width up to 300 ft. These channels are continuous and are probably ancient stream-beds. They are for the most part covered with an over-burden of a more recent gravel, varying from 30 to 50 ft. thick, and the fact that this over-burden contains values as high as $1.50 per cubic yard, and yet was not worked by the Indians, shows that their idea of what constituted mas high.

In view of Twentieth Century advances in mineral dressing technology, most modern metallurgists would be inclined to class jigging as an early, somewhat primitive, representation of their art. The practice of metallic sulfide concentration by jigging is becoming rare. This is so, in part, because the type of ore amenable to the process is becoming rare. It is appropriate, however, that this symposium recognize that a significant contribution of domestic zinc remains dependent upon coarse preconcentration by jigging, and that the state of the art be described even though the theory and applications are already well delineated in technical literature. One of the few areas still using jigging as a major concentrating process is The Upper Mississippi Valley. AREA HISTORY AND JIGGING The Upper Mississippi Valley (UMV) has produced one billion dollars worth of zinc and lead at current prices. The district includes the southwest part of Wisconsin, the northwest corner of Illinois and an adjoining narrow strip of Iowa. Within a total area of 4,000 square miles, important sub-districts cover about 400 square miles. As is widely known, early mining in this district involved shallow lead---crevice deposits of galena that were very selectively mined, hand sorted and cleaned, and then smelted at or near the site. The district has produced almost a million short tons of metallic lead, a very large part of this during the fifty- year period following 1830. Zinc mining began at the end of the civil war, but at a very low rate until about 1905.

It is impossible to speak in exact terms of the effect that selective flotation has had, is having, and may have on the State of Utah. Its results enter into the economic structure of the state in so many ways and its ramifications are so widespread, that every line of industry is affectcd. Some effects can be definitely determined; others can be reasonably approximated; but the effect as a whole can not be set out in exact figures. Utah is essentially a mining state; mining is its basic industry and always will be. Agriculture, equally a basic industry, and of course, equally vital, can be practiced on only 6 per cent. of the 85,000 square miles of its area. It follows, therefore, that the economic future of this state depends upon a development of its natural resources. About 6 or 7 years ago, the mining industry in Utah was at a low ebb. This condition was caused partly by postwar conditions and other temporary causes, but prevailed also, which was most important, because the direet-smelting ores of the state were being rapidly exhausted and the cost of treatment of complex ores was almost prohibitive. Furthermore, the wet concentration of low-grade ores was unsatisfactory and did not result in producing a good smelting product. On visualizing this situation, one of the large smelting companies in the valley had the courage, ability and faith to develop and expand the principles involved in selective flotation of complex ores. This example has been followrd by other smelting and reduction companirs and the result has changed the entire aspect of the mining industry in Utah. The utilization of the zinc in the low-grade, lead-zinc-silvrr ores was the principal prob1t.m to be solvcd. The average yearly production from the State of Utah for the 10 years beginning 1914 and ending 1923, was something less than 10,000 tons of zinc corlcentrates. This period includes the world war, when abnormal priccs stimulated production. In 1924, selective flotation began to be practiced on a considerable scale, replacing concentration by gravity and bulk flotation which had been used generally until this time. Production and Value of Zinc Concentrates The production of zinc concentrates during 1924 was approximately 24,000 tons, or twice the average yearly production of the previous 10

THE geophysical methods of exploration employed so extensively in mining and petroleum investigations are now being used in civil engineering. Requirements differ from those of mineral ex- ploration and therefore modified techniques have been developed. The civil engineer is primarily interested in the uppermost soil and rock strata. In highway engineering the materials affecting design and construction may be found within 15 or 20 ft of ground surface, and data on soils and rocks is seldom needed for more than a depth of 100 ft even for the heaviest structures.

IN the study of slip band* formation, there have been many examples to show that they do not always appear as lines traversing the entire crystal, but as segments whose ends seem to vanish in their path through the crystal. This characteristic appearance of slip bands has been witnessed under the optical microscope at various magnifications'-' and also under the electron microscope.' A typical example of this behavior seen with the optical microscope is shown in Fig. 1. However, the slip band studies were generally conducted on polished surfaces of single or poly-crystalline metals which had been previously deformed; i.e., the load was generally released so that the observation could be made. Any picture of slip bands so obtained can represent the surface phenomenon only in a static state of the strained material. The conditions prior to their formation cannot be definitely and clearly assigned. Thus, while a segmented slip band may suggest that slip is a growth process as supposed by the theory of the nucleation of slip,V he usual appearance of suddenly and fully developed slip bands around the crystal has generally been considered as a consequence of uniform shear of the entire slip plane akin to a cataclysmic process. Little clear-cut information is available with regard to the speed at which a slip band forms, its direction of motion, the geometry of its position with regard to its neighbors, and its dependence on orientation. A description is given in this paper of experimental apparatus by which the progressive formation of slip bands can be recorded while the specimen is undergoing deformation. Qualitative and quantitative data on the dynamic formation of slip bands will be presented with special interest concerning the propagation of slip bands, the spacing of slip bands, and their relations to strain hardening. Views on the formation of slip bands are discussed and a mechanism of the unit process involved in the formation of a slip band is proposed. Preparation of Specimens Single-crystal specimens of high purity aluminum (99.997 pct), 1/8 in. square in cross-section and 1% in. long in gage length, were made by the method of gradual solidification from the liquid state. Since no machining work could be introduced in preparation of crystals of such small size, a special mold was designed for casting them to final shape. The mold consisted of two, separate, high purity graphite blocks. Generally, 20 molds were packed together in one container so that 20 specimens could be obtained by one casting operation. This was desirable since it was possible by this method to obtain groups of crystals with similar orientations. The as-cast crystals were carefully clipped from the gate, etched, and homogenized for 24 hr at 600°C. They were then very gently polished using a 4/0 paper, re-etched, and finally electrolytically polished after the method previously described by Chen and Mathewson.6 The crystallographic orientations were determined using a back-reflection, Laue method. Tensile Testing and Photographic Method The tensile testing equipment for these tests was composed of a specially designed microtensile machine, microload cell and microclip gage with necessary appurtenances. The members of the microtensile machine consisted of three parts, as shown in Fig. 2. The chassis is equipped with an oil cylinder, A, and piston, the piston being part of the movable cross-head, B. Pressure in the oil cylinder is controlled and regulated by an external pneumatic-hydraulic cell, C, which is connected to the cylinder by a Vs in. high pressure copper tube. This cell is half filled with hydraulic oil and has a needle valve, D, on the oil exit side as well as a needle valve, E, on the gas inlet side. A quick-acting valve, F, as well as a pressure gage is provided for the gas side. The oil exits into the load piston on the microtensile machine. By connecting a tank of inert gas to the gas inlet, regulated pressures were provided over the oil so that the oil would leave the cell at a rate determined by the setting of the exit needle valve, the gas pressure, and the pressure of the oil in the load piston of the microtensile machine. Expressions are obtained for the energy changes associated with the reaction of (a& (111) slip dislocations on intersecting (110)planes in anisotropic bcc metals. An energy criterion for assessing the likelihood of dissociation of the products of such reactions is also presented. It is found that the "burrier reactions" which form a(100) dislocations at the intersection of two active {110) slip planes are more energetically favorable in metals which exhibit a high value of Zener's anisotropy factor, A, than those which have a low value. The results are presented in a form which permits the stacking fault energy to be obtained from a measurement of the separation between par-tials in a dissociated configuration. However, until accurate calculations or measurements of the stacking fault energies involved are available, it is not possible to assess the physical importance of dissociated dislocations. In a recent paper,' the energy changes associated with several types of reactions between two slip dislocations, (a/2)(111){110), in bcc structures were calculated.* Isotropic elasticity and the approxima- tion v = -3- were employed. The purpose of this work is to present calculations of the energy changes for many of the same reactions using anisotropic elasticity. The problem of dissociation of a(100) and a(110) dislocations is also considered, and maximum fault energies for which dissociation will be energetically favorable are calculated for several bcc metals. Two general types of reactions are considered; those for which the reactant (a/2)(111) dislocations have long-range attractive forces and those for which the reverse is true. An example of the former is: (a/2)[lll] + (a/2)[lll]-a[l00] while the latter are typified by: (a/2)[lll] + (a/2)[111] -a[011] Only reactants lying in different slip planes are considered; therefore, the products must lie along (111) or (100) directions, which are the intersection of two {llO} planes. It will be assumed that the reactants and products are infinitely long parallel dislocations, since in this case the energy change associated with the reactions is a maximum.' THEORY The self-energy per unit length of a straight mixed dislocation in an anisotropic medium can be written? where b is the Burgers vector, K is an appropriate combination of the single-crystal elastic constants, and R and ro are, respectively, outer and inner cut-off radii of the elastic solution. The energy given by Eq. [I] does not account for any variation of the core energy with orientation. This could be manifested by an orientation dependence of the core radius or, equivalently, the Peierls width, of the dislocation. However, the energy contribution due to this source is expected to be small, and current models of the dislocation core are not sufficiently accurate to justify such a refinement. It has already been shown that for the isotropic case the energy contributions due to nonzero tractions across the cores of the reactants and products exactly cancel one another in the reaction.' Accordingly, it will be assumed that this contribution to the total energy change in the anisotropic case is small. In the subsequent discussion it is also assumed that the core radii of the reactant and product dislocation are the same and that, where stacking faults are formed, the faulted region is bounded by the centers of the partials. Consequently only changes in elastic energy due to the reactions will be considered. When the dislocation is parallel to either the (111) or the (100) directions, K may be written:375 K = (Ke sin2 a + Ks cos2 a) [2] where K, and Ks are the combination of elastic constants corresponding to an edge and screw dislocation lying along the same direction as the mixed dislocation, and a is the angle between the direction tangent to the dislocation line and the Burgers vector. Eq. [2] should not be confused with the isotropic approximation to the variation in energy with line Orientation.6 It should be noted that the essentially isotropic expression for K is a result of the characteristic symmetry of the (111) and (100) directions and is not, in general, valid for other dislocation directions in anisotropic cubic metals. The energy* change for a reaction in which the re- actant and product dislocations are parallel perfect dislocations can be written: where Ep and E, refer to the self-energies of the products and reactants, respectively. For dislocations parallel to (100) and (111) directions, Eq. [3] becomes:

THE investigation of aluminum alloy systems prior to 1923 was severely handicapped by the low purity of the best aluminum available. However, by that time, the electrolytic purification of aluminum had been developed by the Aluminum Company of America,(1)? and in May, 1923, there was initiated, under the direction of E. H. Dix, Jr.,(2) a program for the investigation of the aluminum-alloy systems using the purest electrolytically refined aluminum. Up to the present time 15 papers (a) have been published, most of which are on the binary aluminum systems. Work is now in progress on the ternary systems, and it seems probable that most of the future work will be on ternary systems. Therefore this survey of the binary aluminum systems investigated up to the present time (the sixteenth paper of the series) concludes the first phase of this program. Certain qualitative relations between corresponding portions of the various binary diagrams as well as between different parts of the same diagram were noted some time ago by R. S. Archer.(4) In the present . paper these relations and others are considered quantitatively by the application of well-known thermodynamic equations or by newly discovered empirical relations No attempt will be made here to present the history of the develop-ment of the thermodynamic equations defining equilibrium or their application to metallic systems, although a list of references is given at the end of this paper for those who are interested in this phase of the

DEFORMATION of cold-rolled fcc metals and alloys produces one or the other of two types of rolling textures, usually referred to as the copper type or the brass type. The pure fcc metals, with the exception of silver, develop the copper-type texture when rolled at room temperature. Silver, brass, and many other alloys develop the brass-type texture. Transition from one texture type to another can also occur. Solute additions to pure copper cause a transition from the copper-type to the brass-type texture.' Varying the deformation temperature also produces texture transitions. Copper rolled at -196°C developed the brass-type texture2 and silver rolled at elevated temperatures, 200°C, developed the copper-type texture.374 The work of Haessner,' Smallman and Green,6 and Hu and coworkers3'4 seems to have established an apparent correlation between the type of rolling texture (and the texture transition) and the stacking-fault probability. Thus materials with low stacking-fault energies are thought to develop the brass-type texture while high stacking-fault energy materials develop the copper-type texture. Mikkola and cohen7 measured by X-ray diffraction techniques the stacking-fault probability, a, in the ordered and disordered fcc alloy Cu3Au. Unexpectedly, ordered specimens showed about twice the stacking-fault probability as the disordered ones. Marcinkowski and Zwe118 also found stacking faults in ordered Cu,Au, but not in the disordered CusAu. More recently, Camanzi and coworkers9 have shown that the intrinsic stacking-fault energy of Cu3Au undergoes a considerable decrease (approximately 100 ergs per sq cm) when passing from the disordered to the ordered phase. In general, deformation reduces order'' but some of our measurements showed that some long-range order still remains in Cu3Au after cold reduction by rolling 80 pct. From the above considerations Cu3Au offers the possibility of studying the texture transition in fcc alloys without varying either the temperature or the composition. If the stacking-fault energy correlation is correct, an initially ordered alloy should develop the brass-type texture during rolling while a disordered alloy should develop the copper-type texture. The present communication describes some initial results of experiments designed to investigate this possibility. The rolling textures of ordered and disordered Cu3Au samples were determined after various amounts of deformation. The ordered sample had an initial long-range-order parameter of S = 1, determined from X-ray diffraction. The grain size of both the ordered and disordered samples was the same, and the initial textures of both were also identical and approximately random. No obvious differences in the deformation textures of the ordered and disordered materials were detected up to 35 pct reduction and the (111) pole figures of Fig. 1 resemble that of pure copper. However, with reduction larger than 35 pct and less than 50 pct, a marked deviation from the copper texture was noted in the ordered material. ROLIN1 in 1961 published a phase diagram for the CaF2-Na3AIF6 system in which substantial (-20 wt pct) solid solubility of CaF2 in Na3A1F6 at the eutectic temperature (945°C) was indicated. The evidence was that the halt in cooling curves associated with the eutectic was lowered progressively on the Na3AlF6 side. Scientific research in mining has a comparatively short history. So long as it was possible to maintain adequate mineral supplies by long-established methods, there was little need for the scientific approach. That the end of this comfortable situation is at hand is evinced by the variety and rapidly growing amount of mining research in progress all over the world. The pattern of development of mining research in other countries shows that it started only after a problem became critical. Therefore, the work generally has been short range and usually concentrated on a specific problem. An example is the preoccupation in western Europe with the problem of strata control.

The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure were exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geochemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont province of Cabarrus and Stanly counties, N.C. The area chosen for study is shown in Fig. 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, N.C. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low metamorphic grade. The area is considered to be an early Paleozoic active, continental margin. 1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the north-western quadrant and slate belt rocks to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1.

INTRODUCTION A Workshop on Hydraulic Fracturing Stress Measurements was convened by the authors in December 1981 in Monterey, California under the auspices of the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. National Committee on Rock Mechanics. There are now over a dozen groups of investigators around the world who are actively using the hydraulic fracturing method for making in-situ stress measurements. Because of the extensive recent experience of these different groups, the Workshop enabled forty investigators from eight countries to comprehensively assess the status of the method. Based on the presentations and discussions at the Workshop, in this paper we briefly discuss the current status of the hydraulic fracturing stress measurement method concentrating on problem areas where further research needs to be done. A complete account of the presentations at the Workshop will be available through the Proceedings of the Workshop which will be published by the U.S. National Committee on Rock Mechanics in early 1983. The most exciting aspect of the Workshop was the discovery by the various groups of investigators that others were having very similar experiences with the method. The consensus among the different groups of investigators at the Workshop was that they were recording very similar pressure-time data in the field, they were able to interpret them in similar ways, and they were achieving results that were quite encouraging because of several factors. First, the results at various locales were found to be internally quite consistent. This was reported by investigators from Germany (Rummel, Baumgartner, and Alheid, 1982), Japan (Tsukahara, 1982), Australia (Enever, 1982), and the U.S. (see, for example, Haimson, 1978, 1982a; Zoback

IN recent years, two theories of the mechanism of flotation have received a great amount of attention. One of these is Ostwald's theory of linear flotation,1 according to which most collectors contain three active groups: a hydrophilic or water-loving, a metallophilic or mineral-loving, and an aerophilic or air-loving group. Under the action of these three groups, Ostwald considers a single ring of collector molecules at the three-phase air-liquid-mineral boundary sufficient to bring about the flotation of the mineral particle. Siedler, Moeller and Reddehase2 objected to this theory immediately after it was presented, but most of their objections were answered by Ostwald.3 Very recently, however, Wark and Cox4 have more adequately criticized this theory, and their criticism makes its validity appear doubtful. The other important recent theory is the "chemical" theory of flotation, proposed by Taggart and his coworkers,5 who maintain that "all dissolved flotation reagents, which, in flotation pulps, either by action on the to-be-floated or on thenot-to-be-floated particles affect their floatability, function by reason of chemical reactions of well recognized types between the reagent and the particle affected." A.. S. DWIGHT, New York, N. Y.-Mr. Henrich's paper is rather inconclusive as to the role that alumina really plays in slags. He gives a number of interesting instances of high alumina, with conclusions that he draws from the analyses, in the light of what he knows of the accompanying conditions, but the information given is hardly sufficient to permit intelligent criticism of these conclusions, for it is well known that the slag composition is not the only factor that can produce some of the furnace results favorable or disastrous, as the case may be, which he records. As a matter of fact, most metallurgists who have wrestled with this problem in connection with the smelting of lead and copper ores, usually arrived at some sort of a working hypothesis which met the local conditions fairly well, and then, being busy men, were inclined 'to leave the theoretical question very much as Mr: Henrich leaves it when he says: "A question with which I purpose dealing at some future time." It is unfortunate that in the Golden Age of the smelting industry in the West, when we were all dealing with large tonnages of complex ores, often containing large percentages of alumina in combination with other. refractory elements, the smelting companies were not generally equipped for research as they are today, and much experience that might have been,

Simple qualitative methods are explained for identifying those shaly sands in a well that are most likely to contain oil. A need for more precise measurement of the variables that enter shaly sand analysis is indicated. Field examples are given to illustrate the methods. A theoretical discussion of the quantitative interpretation of shaly sands is given as a basis for discussion and as a guide for the future. While not generally capable of practical application at the present time because of the lack of sufficient accuracy of the electric log data, these methods may become more feasible in the future as the result of the improved logging methods now being introduced. INTRODUCTION Experience has shown that for porous formations containing only a negligible amount of clayey material, reliable information on the fluid saturation and porosity of the reservoir rocks can usually be derived from the electrical logs. The interpretation is based on empirical formulae relating the true resistivity of a porous formation to its lithologic character, to the resistivity of the interstitial water, and to the proportions of water and hydrocarbons in the pores.' If the resistivity of the interstitial water is not known, its approximate value can be derived from the SP curve.2,3 The porosity can usually be determined to a good approximation from a MicroLog, or a MicroLaterolog.4,5 When the reservoir rocks contain an appreciable percentage of clayey material, an additional factor is introduced into the analysis. In a clean formation, the matrix is an electrical insulator, so that the ability of the formation to conduct current is due only to the conductivity of the electrolytes in the pores; in a shaly formation, the shale constitutes a part of the rock matrix able to conduct current, and influences the resistivity of the formation. On the other hand, the spontaneous emf's and the circulation of the SP currents are also responsive to the presence of the shaly material. All other factors being the same, the deflection of the SP curve opposite a shaly permeable formation is smaller than the deflection which would be observed if the formation were clean. The effects of the presence of shale on the resistivity and on the SP curves in a shaly formation are functions of the amount, of the specific resistivity, and of the geometrical distribution of the shaly material within the formation. The presence of shale therefore constitutes an important complication in electrical log interpretation. It is easy to realize, for example, that the presence of a large amount of clayey material in a sand may have such a predominant effect that the resistivity of the sand will not change very much, whether the pores are entirely filled with connate water, or contain a high saturation of hydrocarbons. Important research projects have been undertaken to investigate the influence of shales and to find a way to allow for this influence in the interpretation of a log. The problem of the SP in shaly sands was analyzed mathematically by H. G. Doll"' for the case of sands with shale laminations. Formulae expressing the resistivity of shaly formations were proposed by Patnode and Wyllie8 and de Witte.9 Other quite interesting theoretical and experimental results have been published by various authors.l0,ll,12,l3,14 The purpose of the present paper is to discuss an approach to electrical log interpretation in shaly sands. This approach is based partly on some of the theoretical and experimental data available in the literature and partly on observations made on actual field logs. Comparatively simple methods for qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis are described. These methods depend principally upon information provided by the electrical logs.

THE great Swedish export iron ore mines are Kiruna and Malmberget in the north above the Arctic circle and Grängesberg in Central Sweden, see Figs. 1 to 3. These mines exported in 1951 about 13 million metric tons of high grade iron ore and concentrates. The origin of these three ore fields seems to be the same. They are of pre-Cambrian age and are regarded as typical instances of primary eruptive ore that has thrust up as glowing masses of lava flow between two somewhat older beds of porphyry. Apparently the ore and the porphyry became segregated from common parent magmas by a process of differentiation. Despite the fact that the Kiruna orebody belongs to the earliest pre-Cambrian formation, it has been influenced to an unusually small extent by later metamorphosisms, apart from its having been set on edge through folding and wrenching off by a number of later faults. The Kiruna ore occurs along a stretch of more than 4 miles as a series of slabs or lenses sloping steeply toward the east and sandwiched between two beds of porphyry. The main orebody has a length of about 3 miles and an average width of 300 ft with a maximum of 600 ft. The dip varies from 65° to 45° toward the east and the known depth is 3000 ft, although magnetic surveys indicate it may be at least 6000 ft. Malmberget has undergone a more thorough transformation, having been pressed and crumpled into a meandering band of disconnected layers and lenses. The largest of the more connected bodies of ore, the Great Ore Layer, outcrops on a low mountain ridge and has a total length of about 4 miles and a maximum width of about 300 ft.
