SOME years ago, in the manufacture of seamless tubing from an alloy steel containing 0.07 per cent maximum carbon, 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel, at the plant of The Babcock & Wilcox Tube Co., a peculiar type of piercing defect was noticed. This defect was definitely associated with certain heats of the alloy and was independent of any of the variables of mill operation and billet-heating condition. A thorough analysis of the defective material yielded but one clue to the reason for its abnormal behavior in piercing and that was its oxygen content as determined by the vacuum fusion method. The oxygen content of the defective 18-8 alloy was found to be from two to three times that of the material that had pierced satisfactorily, and this incited an active interest in the vacuum fusion method for the analysis of alloy steels. After a critical survey of the literature on this subject, and considerable experimentation, an apparatus and technique were evolved that gave a fairly rapid, simple and reliable method of analysis. Samples selected from six years of tube production of 18-8 and other corrosion-resistant alloys were analyzed by this method. This paper describes the procedure and gives a correlation of the oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen contents of a number of alloy steel samples repre-sentative of good and bad tube-piercing quality.

THE coercimeter, as its name implies, is an instrument for measuring the coercive force[+] of magnetic substances. It was developed by Davis and Hartenheim in the Special Studies Section, Metallurgical Division. A detailed description of this apparatus may be found elsewhere.2 The coercive force determinations of magnetic materials are interesting because of the relationship established by Gottschalk,4 who showed a linear relationship between the magnetization coercive force and the specific surface of comminuted particles. The value of this relationship in determining grinding efficiency has been shown by Dean.3 The determination of the surface contained in the subsieve sizes has always been a difficult problem for investigators. They made approximate measurements of the surface of coarse materials by sizing on screens, but for the determination of the surface of the sub- sieve sizes it was necessary to make detailed grain counts or elutriation tests, or to study dissolution rates. The technical literature contains many references to other methods for determining these surfaces, either by some special apparatus or by mathematical calculations based on distribution lines. Many of the methods are long and tedious, and the results of some, at least, are questionable. The turbidimeter gives quick results on ground cement. By using magnetite as the material to be ground, a simple determination of its coercive force by the coercimeter, requiring 10 minutes or less, can be transposed directly and accurately into units of relative surface. This subject has been pursued further by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., and the following is a description of the results.

The first diesel-powered Scooptram has now been in service for 21/2 yr at the I-C mine of Martin County Coal Corp. It has become the workhorse of the operation, being used around the clock many days. The fleet of nine 20-ton capacity Teletrams used behind three Jeffrey Heliminers now have more than 1 1/2-yr experience in the Coalburg mine. They have been exposed to some difficult conditions which, include steep grades, water, mud, and rutted roadways. These units have proven to he both rugged and powerful. The safety components and shutdown systems make these haulage units very safe for underground coal mines. A clean-burning engine, a satisfactory exhaust conditioning system, and good ventilation are the keys to maintaining a safe and healthful atmosphere for the underground operators and other employees.

Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners. Compressive and shear stresses induced in liners not protected by coarse ore are so severe that deformation or minute subsurface cracking are inevitable in all but the small production grinding mills, regardless of mill liner alloy strength or hardness.

Oil and gas development in southern Pennsylvania during 1937 was marked by considerably increased activity in deep-sand drilling. Nine tests were completed to the Oriskany sand: one in Independence and three in South Beaver townships, Beaver County; one in Franklin township, Butler County, two in Slippery Rock township, Lawrence County; one in Mt. Pleasant township, Washington County, which is drilling below the Oriskany, and one in Fairfield township, Westmoreland County. Two of these wells, both of which were in the Blackhawk pool, South Beaver township, Beaver County, obtained wet gas with open-flow volumes of 1.5 million cu. ft. and 3.1 million cu. ft. and closed-in pressures of 1900 Ib. The remaining seven were unproductive in the Oriskany. Two wells, one in Hampton township, Allegheny County, which is shut down temporarily as a result of a gas pocket, and one in South Beaver township, Beaver County, are drilling to the Oriskany. One deep test on the Chestnut Ridge anticline, South Union township, Fayette County, was completed after considerable difficulty as a dry gas well in the Onondaga limestone. At this locality the cherty limestone is porous as a result of fracturing. Three additional tests are under way in the area, one in South Union township, a second in North Union township, and a third in Wharton township. Completions Oil.—Despite price cuts and production curtailment of Pennsylvania Grade crude, caused largely by a decreasing demand from export markets, operation in the shallow oil areas continued at a fairly high rate and a number of good wells were completed. Some of these were new wells in close proximity to old production and others were old wells drilled into deeper pays. One new well of a number of producers drilled to the Nineveh Thirty-foot sand in the Harvey pool, Center township, Green County, made 400 bbl. of oil and 500 million cu ft. of gas the first 24 hr. The Chambers dam pool of Amwell and South Franklin townships, Washington County, yielded a number of Fifth Sand producers with initials as high as 200 bbl. Several wells in the old Mars-Butler field

An efficient storage plant contains a known available volume of bulk solid, and feeds it at the required time, the prescribed rate and without degradation of the product. A storage bin may also perform other functions, such as blending different grades, degasifying aerated powders and isolating different gaseous media. A contact bed of particles flowing by gravity in counter-current with a gas or liquid may be used as a continuous reactor. In order to design an efficient storage plant or contact-bed reactor, it is necessary to be aware of the problems which can arise in flow and storage. The typical problems are no flow, erratic flow, flushing, insufficient flow, lack of designed capacity, segregation, degradation of the product and level control.

THE year 1924 showed even less drilling in Kentucky and Tennessee than the preceding year. The operators in this section, however, are anxious to resume development work and are only waiting for a higher market for crude oil before starting such a program. In Kentucky, during 1924, 1605 wells were completed, the combined initial daily production of these wells being 25,599 bbl. Of the total number of wells drilled 1176 were oil wells, 61 gas wells, and 368 were dry holes. The average initial production of the oil wells was 21.8 bbl. per well. In Tennessee, 28 wells having an initial daily production of 1199 bbl. were completed during 1924. Of these, 3 were oil wells, 6 were gas wells, and 19 were dry holes. The initial production of the three oil wells was 400 bbl. Of the total number of wells drilled in Kentucky in 1924, 73 per cent. came in as producing wells; and of those drilled in Tennessee, 10 ½ per cent. came in as producing wells and 20 per cent. as gas wells. In Tennessee, during 1924, wildcatting dropped off considerably and only about one-half as many wells were drilled as in the preceding year; in Kentucky, on the other hand, there was only a slight curtailment in drilling, there being 1943 wells drilled in 1923 as against 1605 in 1924.

World consumption of petroleum and its substitutes in 1940, which, except for the United States, does not include consumption for military purposes even in peacetime, is estimated at 2,006,000,000 bbl., or approximately 21,000,000 bbl. less than in 1939. As consumption figures for belligerent countries and those affected by the war are unavailable, in order to arrive at a gross approximation the assumption has been made that the rate of civil consumption in these countries has declined 80 per cent since the German occupation or the effect of the war made itself felt. In 1940 the total consumption in the United States increased 94,000,000 bbl. over the previous year, while the civil consumption in the countries directly affected by the war—some of them occupied during the last half of the year—decreased 126,000,000 bbl. The tendency of the oxides of such metals as aluminum, zinc, chromium, and calcium to form compounds at high tempera tures with iron oxide is well established by past investigation. Data of this reaction, as developed in laboratory research, have been contributed by Burleigh, Hofman, and Wells, in America, and by many others abroad. A partial bibliography of the subject is appended. From these authorities we learn that the ferric oxide here has the function of an acid, giving in the case of ZnO a zinc ferrite, with a normal composition of ZnOFe2O3 This formation of zinc ferrite particularly affects the success of such processes as leaching or magnetic separation, and thus becomes practically important to the metallurgist. But the meager existing data do not entirely agree; and quantitative results from muffle-practice are conspicuously absent. Furthermore, it being of some general importance to the zinc smelter in both roasting and reduction, the following few notes of operations oil a commercial scale are contributed: I. Physical Properties of Zinc Ferrite. As formed for the most part synthetically by investigators, zinc ferrite exhibits characteristic physical properties, such as octahedral crystals, dark color, and a density over 5, together with a slight magnetic attractability. In examining with the microscope many products of mechanical muffle-roasting kilns, it is, however, impossible to find individual grains which can be identified as consisting entirely of zinc ferrite. The variety of colors, especially where each grain of blende was mechanically free from marcasite, rather conveys the impression of a partial ferritization of the grain. One side or end, for example, may often have the hard, dense surface and dark red to black color of the ferrite, while the balance shows the usual light yellowish brown of a normal iron-free blende.

The key to successful liquid-liquid extraction is the solvent. First, and most important, it must be highly selective for the metal desired and yet reject other metal ions present; second, the ideal sol- vent is completely insoluble in the aqueous feed liquor; third, it has rapid phase separation and will not form emulsions; and, fourth, low cost is desirable, since losses occur even though the solvent is recycled. For this application a solvent known as DDPA (dodecyl phosphoric acid) was chosen since it closely met these requirements. DDPA is a long-chain alkyl phosphate developed for AEC by Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Dow Chemical Co., and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The long chain contributes to low solubility in the aqueous phase and to high extracting power from acidic sulfate solutions, whereas the alkyl phosphates generally exhibit high selectivity for uranium solutions.

The year 1934 in Southwest Texas was marked by aggressive development and exploratory work and resulted in the finding of five new fields and a new producing horizon in one of the older fields. This activity is the result of a reasonable market outlet for production, on both oil and gas, and the fact that drilling and operating costs are reasonable and that possibilities of finding new productive areas are rather high. A large part of the area is prospective and very little, if any, satisfactory surface geological work can be done. This, together with the possibility of finding new productive areas, stimulates wildcatting throughout the counties under discussion. Development work continued actively in all of the newer fields. Exploratory work was most intense in Duval, McMullen, Starr and Zapata counties. The activity in Duval and McMullen counties was the result of persistent efforts to find new trends of production similar to and perhaps associated with the Government Wells group of fields. The activity in Starr and Zapata counties was stimulated by the discovery of the Sam Fordyce field in Hidalgo County as well as the continued effort to find new productive trends southeastward from some of the older fields in northeastern Zapata County and western Jim Hogg Comity. Statistics on production are shown in Tables 1 and 2. New Fields Lopeno.—The Lopeno gas field in the southwestern part of Zapata County was opened in August, 1934, by R. B. Morrison No. 1 Ramirez. This is an anticlinal structure mapable in Claiborne beds and the producing horizon is the Queen City sand at 2100 ft. in the Upper Mt. Selman. At the close of the year only two gas wells had been completed but drilling operations were in progress on several other wells and a gas line was being laid to the field so that withdrawals from the area will begin early in 1935. Comilas.—The Comitas field was opened by Merle Gunby No. 1 Haynes in a sand at 800 ft. in an area southwest of the Escobas field. Heat transfer rates were measured in sandstones with flow of gases perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. Effective thermal conductivities ker ranged from 0.7 to 1.7 Btu/(br)(ft)(°F). The contribution of the solid phase appeared to be the most important in these consolidated materials, although the thermal conductivity of the gas had some effect. The velocity of the gas through the pores of the sandstones had no influence upon ker up to values of 168 lb/(br) (sq ft) in agreement with data obtained for unconsolidated beds of glass beads. The present results indicated that gas mixing, and hence heat transfer by convection in the pores, is less for perpendicular transfer of energy than when fluid flow and energy transfer are in the same direction. HEAT TRANSFER PERPENDICULAR TO FLUID FLOW IN POROUS ROCKS Heat transfer in porous media with pore sizes in the micron range depends upon the fluid in the pores and the geometry of the solid phase. The best characterized system is a bed of solid spherical particles. Heat transfer in this system has been studied extensive1y (Ref. 8 summarizes the literature up to 1959) when the pores contain stagnant fluid. When the fluid is in motion the directions of flow and energy transfer have an effect on the heat transfer rates, as demonstrated by comparing the work of Willhite, et al l3 for perpendicular flow and that of Kunii and Smith9 for parallel flow of energy and fluid. For perpendicular flow, no increase in effective thermal conductivity ke was noted up to mass velocities G of 77 lb/(hr) (sq ft). In contrast, for parallel flow ke, increased with G in the same range of flow rates. These higher values of ke in the direction of flow also have been observed3,4,10 in beds of larger particles, 0.1- to 0.5-in. diameter. For beds of consolidated materials, such as porous rocks, data are not available for these compar- isons, although Adivarahan1 reported results for the parallel case. Hence the primary objective of this work was to measure ke values for perpendicular flow of fluid and energy in porous rocks. Of interest also was the variation in effective conductivity with fluid velocity. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE In the experimental method, a constant heat flux was applied to the inner surface of an annular section of the porous rock. By cooling the outer wall, a temperature gradient through the annular sample was established and measured with thermocouples placed within the sample at various radial positions, and at three elevations (A,B.C). The location of the 2-in. O.D., 3.75-in. long sample in the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Fluid entered the bottom (1) of the 3-in. I.D. (approximate) steel shell, flowed upwards through the sample and out at the top (3). pressure taps (2,4) were used to check the permeability of the sample. The energy flowed radially from the centrally-located electric heater through the sample and was absorbed in the water-cooled jacket. The samples studied were naturally occurring sandstones from different locations with the properties given in Table 1. These materials are identical with those used by Adivarahan 1 for the parallel flow of energy and fluid. Prior to use they were refluxed with toluene to remove hydrocarbons and leached with distilled water to remove soluble salts. Each sample was visually examined and discarded if large nonhomogeneities, such as cracks or stone particles, were noted. At the beginning of the year 1935 the older fields in Southwest Texas, and particularly those discovered during 1934, had been practically delimited and only normal development continued. As a result, operations in this area were somewhat slowed down. Shortly after the first of the year, however, activity in the area was greatly accelerated, due largely to the fact that the Loma Novio field, discovered during the last few days of 1934, indicated the presence of a new productive trend east of and parallel to the Government Wells field and also indicated the presence of a new productive horizon, the Loma Novio sand, approximately 100 ft. lower than the Government Wells sand zone. Other discoveries during the year greatly augmented the activity in the district. During the year there were 651 oil wells, 53 gas wells and 275 dry holes drilled in this area during the year. Most of the operations were in the Government Wells, Cole, Loma Novio, Seven Sisters and Lopez fields. New Fields Four new fields were discovered during 1935 as follows: Seven Sisters and Piedra de Lumbre in Duval County; Loma Alto in McMullen County; and Lopez in Webb County. Seven Sisters Field.—The Seven Sisters field, opened in May, was the direct result of a systematic search for new productive areas northeast of the Loma Novio field. The first producer, Harvey & Henderson NO. 1 Chernosky, survey 226, was completed in the Labbe (Chernosky) sand at 2220 ft. However, the second producer, Santa Clara Oil Co. No. 1 Welder in survey 385, drilled about one mile south of the discovery well, failed to find production in the Labbé sand and was carried on down and completed in the Government Wells sand at 2473 ft. with an initial production of 20 bbl. of oil per hour. These two discoveries, in the Labbé and Government Wells sand, started an active leasing and drilling campaign in this part of Duval County and drilling operations continued especially active throughout the remainder of the year.
