Zinc is one of the effective elements introduced to enhance the strength of aluminum. This strengthening is principally attributable to the high solid solubility of zinc in aluminum and the pronounced variation of solubility with temperature. Consequently an accurate determination of the solid solubility curve is desirable. The solid solubility relations have been studied by numerous investigators. Shepherd1 first established the existence of a solid solution region at the aluminum end of the diagram (-v phase) by specific volume and microscopic determinations. Bauer and Voge12 published a constitutional diagram which showed the limits of solid solubility as determined by thermal and microscopic methods. Hanson and Gayler3 presented the aluminum-zinc diagram which is now most generally accepted (Fig. 1). Chill-cast samples were given thermal treatments designed to obtain equilibrium conditions, quenched, and microscopically examined. The solubility was placed between 15 to 20 per cent at 60" C., 20 to 22 per cent at 140" C. and 36 to 38 per cent at 270" C. Sander and Meissner decidedly modified the limits of the -y phase field of Hanson and Gayler's diagram by using similar methods on chill-cast specimens annealed for a shorter period of time. Tanabe,s utilizing dynamic hard-ness, electrical conductivity and dilatometric measurements of specimens at temperature, obtained values comparable to Hanson and Gayler's at room temperature, but appreciably lower at higher temperatures. Nishimura6 concluded from age-hardening results of aluminum-zinc alloy chill castings, which had been quenched from 400" to 500" C., that the solubility of zinc in aluminum at room temperature is less than 5 * Metallurgical Division, Aluminum Research Laboratories. 1 E. The present period of depression in the iron industry, with the resultant close approximation of the cost of production to the selling-price of pig-iron, should make the discussion of this subject at this time not only interesting but profitable. It is possible that it may result in the collection of data, which when added to those set forth in this paper will clearly indicate the influence of the rate of driving a blast-furnace upon its fuel-economy. The question is not whether an excessive rate of driving (meaning a rate definitely in excess of the average rate in the United States) results in an increase in the fuel-consumption, but rather whether a rate considerably less than the average does not result in a marked decrease in the fuel-consumption. The commercial and metallurgical sides of this problem must be kept separate. With a large margin between the cost of production and the selling-price of pig-iron, and a plant already in operation, it is frequently profitable to sacrifice a couple of hundred pounds of fuel per ton of pig-iron in order to secure the greater gross profits resulting from a larger tonnage. When this margin decreases with a plant in operation, or when the determination of the size of a new furnace intended for a certain production confronts the management, a clear understanding of the effect of the rate of driving upon fuel-economy becomes necessary. If it be granted that slow driving leads to low fuel-consumption, it should be borne in mind in the design of a new plant for the production of a certain tonnage that the adoption of an economical rate of driving increases only the size of the furnace proper, whereas, due to the decrease in quantity of blast required on account of the decrease in fuel burned, the stoves, the blowing-engines, the boilers and the piping may be de-

THE amount of research done in the last few years on the subject of diffusion in solid metals is significant of the importance of this problem. To review the literature dealing with diffusion is unnecessary here. Desch1 in 1912 reviewed the work that had been done on diffusion in solids and gave a bibliography of the literature published before that time. Mehl's paper in 1936 2 is an excellent review of diffusion in metals and contains a large bibliography. Of importance also for its review and bibliography is an article by A. I. Krynitsky.3 While considerable material has appeared in the literature on diffusion in brass, the amount of information is not great compared to that pertain-ing to some of the other alloys. Most of the information published is of a qualitative nature; that which is quantitative varies considerably. Thus the quantitative determination of the rates of diffusion of copper and zinc in alpha brass by a new method appeared worth while. In the present investigation the rate of diffusion of zinc in approxi-mately the same composition alpha brass has been determined at three temperatures.

High-voltage cable couplers are convenient and widely used accessories in modern coal-mine power distribution systems to help extend and retract power-feeder cables throughout a mine. Coupler design has tried to keep pace with the industry's desire to move to higher distribution levels, but the increase in recorded failures of 15-kV class couplers, which serve the 12.47-kV and above distribution levels, has inhibited this transition. Problems associated with the effects of partial discharge on high-voltage cable couplers are analyzed. The phenomenon of partial discharge is discussed, a testing standard is developed, and various coupler designs are subjected to its requirements. An analysis of test results and results based on field applications are provided.

In a recent note Sully and Head1 showed that the Cr-Fe sigma phase is isomorplious with the Cr-Co gamma phase, and that the lattice constants are also nearly identical. In a preliminary investigation of the ternary Cr-Co-Fe system at 800°C at this laboratory the above findings were confirmed, and it was found by microscopic techniques, using various etching reagents, that the two binary phases form an urinterrupted series of solid solutions with each other. These solid solutions occupy a straight narrow band which cuts across the 800°C isothermal section of the ternary system, connecting the two binary phases. A detailed investigation of the Cr-Co-Ni ternary system at 1200°C disclosed that here, too, the Cr-Co gamma phase extends deep into the ternary system in the form of a long narrow lip. The fact that this sigma type lattice is sustained even when well over half of the Co atoms in it are replaced by Ni atoms, with relatively little change in the Cr content, clearly indicates that Ni itself has a certain tendency to form the sigma phase with chromium. This tendency is hidden in the binary Cr-Ni alloys, where the sigma phase is not known to occur, but it becomes operative in the presence of a suficient amount of Co. The interpretation of these facts in terms of electron concentrations is rendered difficult by the uncertainty of our present knowledge of the valency electron structure of the transition elements in their alloys. However, Sully and Heal's results and the present work suggest that intermetallic phases with signla type lattice may occur more frequently in these little investigated alloys than heretofore suspected. In particular, it is expected that a similar phase may exist in the V-Co and perhaps in the V-Ni system, in analogy to the known sigma type phase in the V-Fe system, and that all these sigma type phases may form extensive solid solutions with one another.

In a recent study of Fe-Si alloys Walter and Koch' observed pairs of dislocations in Fe-6.25 pct Si crystals rolled to reductions of 10 pct and subsequently annealed for 1 hr at 650°C. They interpreted these pairs as being due to stacking faults. From the spacing of the dislocations a stacking-fault energy of 15 to 19 ergs per sq cm was calculated. These authors did not pay any attention to the order -disorder phenomena in Fe-Si alloys. It is the purpose of this communication to report some preliminary results from a study of ordering and its influence on the plastic deformation of Fe-6.0 pct Si alloys. Our results suggest that the dislocation pairs observed by Walter and Koch may have been due to long-range order rather than to stacking faults. The alloys used in this investigation were prepared from pure electrolytic iron and silicon and were melted in argon. After hot working, strip tensile specimens were machined to a gage length of 70 mm and a thickness of 1 mm. The specimens were heat- treated for 2 hr at 1000°C, furnace-cooled, and subsequently deformed 2 pct in tension at 400°C. The strain rate was 5.6 X lo-' sec-'. Thin foils of the deformed specimens were prepared by means of the Bollman technique and examined in a Siemens Elmis-kop I at an accelerating voltage of 100 kv. In the Fe-Si system long-range ordering occurs at a silicon content of about 6 pct Si. In our alloys evidence for ordering is given by selected-area diffraction patterns which show extra reflections consistent with a super lattice of the D0 9 type. In addition, the dislocation arrangement in deformed specimens indicates that long-range order is present. A typical mi-crophotograph of a thin foil is shown in Fig. l. The dislocations are usually straight and parallel and laying in distinct directions. In the commonly observed (111) zone the projections of the dislocations are close to (113) and (oil). Observation of the image position indicates that the two dislocations in a pair have the same Burgers vector and hence constitute a superlattice dislocation.~ According to theory3 a superlattice dislocation in the DO3 structure consists of four ordinary dislocations connected by two types of antiphase boundaries as shown in Fig. 2. The cases of no auxiliary ventilation and ventilation with tubing were mathematically modeled, using a turbulent dispersion model. The Scooptram® used to load is modeled as a variable-speed, variable-strength source of pollutants moving in and out of the dead-ended drift. Model predictions are compared to experimental measurements. A parametric analysis was performed to determine If a relationship existed between C02 and NO levels. It was concluded from this analysis that when modeling a load-haul-dump cycle, it is necessary to use a model that can predict changes in source strength as well as source location. Carbon dioxide was used as a tracer to calibrate the model since, knowing the fuel flow rate, it is possible to calculate C02 production. The model was then verified after this calibration process using additional experimental results. With the calibrated model, it is possible to predict pollutant concentrations at any location in the heading using an engine map and the previously calculated flow field.

The oil and gas industry of New Mexico recorded notable progress ill 1935. More wells were brought in than in any previous year, and important new discoveries were made. The total number of completions was 340, of which 260 were oil wells, 8 were gas wells and 72 were dry holes. The total oil production was 20,228,947 bbl., an appreciable increase over the 1934 production of 16,636,804 barrels. Many of the wells completed in southeastern New Mexico were acidized. This treatment proved highly effective in increasing the capacity of the wells, the resulting potentials usually being two to ten times as large as before acid treatment. In the Lea County fields in which proration was entirely on an acreage basis, the tendency of many of the operators was to complete their wells according to best conservation practice rather than to obtain the largest possible potential. Much remedial work was done in the Hobbs, Cooper, Jal and Eunice fields, and with excellent results. At many of the wells high gas-oil ratios were greatly reduced and encroaching waters shut off by setting packers. Several companies carried on pretentious geophysical campaigns in the southeastern part of the state. The location of the Amerada discovery well in the Monument field was based on geophysical surveys. The New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission, established by the 1935 Legislature and consisting of the Governor, the Commissioner of Public Lands and the State Geologist, began to function in May. Production in the state thereafter was based on orders issued by the Commission. Proration in the Hobbs field, which had been provided for since July, 1930, by successive proration agreements signed by all operators in the field and approved by the State Geologist, was continued by the Commission by giving approval to the current proration agreement,. A plan of proration for the other Lea County fields that had been in offect since early ill 1934 was adopted. 111 September, 1935, the Commission approved a. proration agreement for the Artesia-Jackson-Maljarnar area in Eddy and Lea counties that had been agreed upon by

The North Texas district incorporated in this paper corresponds with the Railroad Commission's District No. 9, and includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Young.† Table I,Oil and Gas Production in North Texas District, has been changed to conform with the nomenclature of pools designated by the Commission in order to facilitate compilation of the data, since most of the companies operating in the area are coming more and more to recognize one central authority in the matter of naming each new oil pool. No effort is being made to discuss the structural characteristics of the region, since it is generally known by oil men that most of the oil and gas comes from Pennsyl-vanian, with some of less importance from the Mississippian and Ordovician. Development during 1944 There were 1550 wells drilled during 1944, an increase of 450. Of this number, 677 were completed as oil wells, and 11 as gassers. Production increased 1,505,025 bbl., making the year's total 43,172,005 bbl. of oil having an average gravity of 40". Development generally, however, was somewhat disappointing. The 47 new pools, extensions, or new pay horizons in old fields, had a combined initial production of only 19,146 bbl. It is estimated that these wells added approximately 10,000,000 bbl. to the reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the Caddo conglomerate in the Hildreth pool, Montague County. During the year, 66 wells were completed as the result of three extensions, I to 136 miles west, northwest and north of the field. Young, Archer, and Clay were the most active counties. Eleven new potential - oil fields were developed in Young County, nine in Archer and nine in Clay. Outlook for 1945 In spite of the fact that exploration as a whole was disappointing in 1944, prospects for increased development are bright for 1945. At the close of last year, 2.1 geophysical crews were operating in the district, which, together with the Ohio Oil Company's No. I W. R. Ross, a wildcat Strawn discovery in King County, 1 1/2 miles beyond the west boundary of district 9, stimulated a lease play extending over four counties. RECENT investigations have shown that face-centered cubic metals may deform by twinning. Blewitt, et al' found that at 4.2"K the mode of def~rmation of single crystals of copper changed at large strains and markings formed on (111) planes. Later they- emonstrated by X-ray diffraction and metallography that the markings were twins and showed that favorably oriented single crystals of copper deformed by twinning at 78°K. They also observed twinning in silver and gold deformed at 4.2 and 78°K. Wagner3 obtained evidence for twinning from the peak shape of diffraction lines of silver cold-worked at 78°K, but twins small enough to cause such effects are not likely to be detected metal-lographically. In the work reported here lamellar structures were observed in deformed silver-gold alloys. They appeared to be mechanical twins, but metallography could not establish this conclusively. Their tendency to form depended on strain rate, temperature and composition. Specimens of silver-gold alloys (0 to 83 wt pct Au) were deformed plastically. One set was worked by hammering under liquid nitrogen, at room temperature and at intermediate temperatures. Another set was compressed slowly in liquid nitrogen to the same reductions as those produced by hammering. Tensile specimens (0.015 x 0.120 x 1.5 in.) of various compositions and approximately equal grain size (0.011 to 0.016 cm) were tested at -195°C and at room temperature. In microsections of all specimens deformed by hammering at —195°C thin lamellae appeared, Fig. 1. They were aligned in definite directions in each grain. In some grains they had two orientations. Where lamellae intersected, a displacement was apparent. Near the center of the left margin of Fig. 1 shear has taken place beyond the fully developed intersecting lamella. Many lamellae resembled Neumann bands in alpha iron. They were parallel to one side of triangular etch pits in the matrix (as in Figs. 1 and 2). The individual lamellae were narrow and had little substructure. This suggested that they did not result from concentrated local slip. The shape of etch pits within the lamellae differed from that of pits in the matrix, as can be seen in Fig. 2; this indicated a difference in orientation. Specimens slowly deformed at —195°C contained regions in which the lamellae were clustered. In these specimens some lamellae were bent and presumably had formed before the termination of the deformation. Structures of greater width than the lamellae were also seen.4 More lamellar structures formed on impact than during slow compression to a given reduction. This was true of all compositions. The structures became less abundant with increasing temperature of deformation. None was observed after extension to fracture at room temperature, but they could be pro-

Corneille S. Ek (Assistant Professor in Ore Dressing, University of Liege, Liege, Belgium) — This is a very valuable paper, in that it shows how it is possible to take care of a multitude of laboratory routine tests, and derive from them successful modifications of flowsheets or of operating methods. The author and the Company appear to be test-minded and this is best seen through the case histories described. There are however some corrections to be made, and questions arise when one studies the paper. If all the equations are to be homogenous, one obviously has to write Eq. 4 On the other hand, it is difficult to accept the definition put on Eq. 7, for that equation, which represents the factor of transformation from tpd of solids to cu ft per min of pulp in Eq. 6, has nothing to do with conditioning. It is evidently assumed here that conditioning means, as Gaudin calls it,' modulation of collection. One would prefer, for Eq. 7, the appel-ation "pulp conversion factor". The North Texas district, as' herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita, and Wilbarger. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, usually are modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. Excepting those in southeastern Baylor, southern Archer, and southwestern Clay counties, all the fields within the district are on this Red River uplift. These exceptions, which have the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields, are on the extreme north end of the Bend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas to Archer County. The larger part of past oil and gas production has come from Pennsyl-vanian strata, with less important amounts from the Permian, and minor but increasingly important quantities from the Ordovician. Developments during 1942 Approximately 500 wells were drilled in the district during 1942, in contrast with some 1600 wells drilled during 1941, and only some goo oil wells were completed, a decrease from 1941 of more than 10 per cent in the number of successful drilling operations of the total wells drilled. Production increased slightly over the previous year in spite of a decrease in the number of producing wells. The average depth of discovery wells was some 600 ft. deeper than in 1941. Although more discoveries produced from horizons above the base of the Strawn series than those below the Strawn, the deeper horizons, including the Bend series of the Pennsylvanian, the Mississippian limestone, and the Simpson and Ellenburger of the Ordovician, furnished most of the addition to oil reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was again in the Ellenburger formation in the K. M. A. field. During the year 47 wells were completed, bringing the total developed acreage in this horizon to some 5450 acres. The most active area was Montague County, in which eight fields, or potential fields, were discovered although only 39 oil wells were completed. K. M. Pressure Maintenance Association in 1942, At the end of the year, 100 wells were being used for input and total monthly volume of gas returned to the reservoir reached a high of 430,971 M cu. ft. in December, with an input ratio of 587 cu. ft. of gas returned for each barrel of oil produced during the month. THE nature of certain pernicious dusts commonly encountered in the removal of iron ore from the underground mines of the Lake Superior district is recognized, and appropriate measures for the protection of individuals subjected to these dusts have been applied in most mines for more than to years. Undoubtedly the principal concern has been demanded by dusts that contain as a constituent silicon dioxide in its free or uncombined state, the mineral we all know as quartz or chert. Investigators1 agree that among the factors that determine injurious exposure are: the composition of the dust, the concentration suspended at the breathing level and the duration of the exposure. We have on hand data that describe the experience of several underground iron-ore mines in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin in regard to these factors, which in a large measure also reflect the general experience of the other mines of the area. We believe that a discussion of these data will indicate the effectiveness of the dust-control methods that have been considered good practice and that have been employed over a long period of time. A silicosis-prevention program was ini¬tiated by the iron mines of the Upper Peninsula in 1934 and records of mine dustiness are available from that date to the present time. For dust conditions previous to 1934 the results of observations conducted in other industries can be utilized together with local information pertaining to the development and initial application of rock-drilling equipment. DEVELOPMENT OF ROCK DRILLS The earliest percussion rock drill that later had any industrial use was patented in this country in 1851.2 This machine was later modified and improved in many respects but its piston-type design remained standard for drilling equipment in most mines for the next 63 years.3 The piston drill was operated either by air or by steam. It employed a solid drill steel, fastened directly to the reciprocating piston. The drilling was done dry except in holes directed at an angle below the horizontal. For these water was manually injected into the hole and the pumping action of the rod expelled the sludge. The dry cuttings from drillings inclined above the horizontal fell from the hole by their own weight. A development of major importance from the standpoint of dust generation and control occurred with the invention by J. G. Leyner of a hammer-type rock drill that embodied the essential feature of a drill steel with a hollow core. His patent was secured in 1897. The machine was a radical departure in drilling method. INTRODUCTION The major mining operations of the Ontario Division of Inco Metals Company are located in the Sudbury Basin. Around the rim of this geo- logical formation and within thirty miles of the City of Sudbury are located eleven under- ground mines of the Company, two of which are on standby. In addition, there is one mine in Northwestern Ontario at Shebandowan, 1127 Km (700 miles) northwest of Sudbury. In 1980 ore production totalled 10.6 x 10 mt (11.7 million tons) from underground and open pit operations. Underground mining methods include blasthole, vertical retreat, sublevel caving, cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill. Inco reduction operations in the Sudbury area include two concentrators, one smelter, one iron ore recovery plant, a copper refinery a nickel refinery and a high purity plate rolling mill. As well, an electrolytic nickel refinery is located on Lake Erie at Port Colborne, near Niagara Falls. In the Sudbury District, Inco employees total 14,278 of whom 6,490 are directly employed in the mining and milling operations. I T H DRILLING Background - The use of long blastholes in underground operations at Inco mines in the Sudbury district started more than 30 years ago at the Levack Mine. At that time, diamond drills were used to mine ore by open stoping and for pillar recovery. By the 1950's the concept had been extended to all mines. The heavy percussion drill was also developed by this time and led to the acceptance of the 11.43 cm (4% in.) piston diameter drifter for bar and arm and fan drill applications. The use however, of the nominal 5.08 cm (2 in.) diameter blastholes drilled radially from the level or sublevel causes overdrilling at the periphery. As well, the smaller holes are subject to hole deviation, are difficult to drill beyond 38.1 m (125 ft.) and require the need for several drilling horizons or sublevels. The need to improve blasthole stoping techniques and our experience with large diameter blastholes in open pit mining led to the trial of an I T H drill in 1962. The test was unsuccessful however, since button bits were not available at the time and the tungsten carbide cross bit experienced short life, gauge loss, and caused hole deviation and poor penetration rates. The successful application of the raise borer beginning in 1964 and the ability to drill 20.32 cm (8 in.) to 27.94 cm (11 in.) diameter pilot holes led to the development of smaller, more portable, rotary drills for blasthole mining. As a result, a mining method based on the use of 20 cm (7 718 in.) diameter, 60.1 m (200 ft.) long rotary blastholes was developed and tested successfully at our C.C.North Mine. Between 1972, when the method was first tested, and 1973 over 4572 m (15000 ft.) of large holes were drilled with rotary drills in the recovery of 175,960 mt (194000 tons) of primary stoping and pillar remnants. A new mining method was developed that made use of this large hole drilling equipment. Instead of longhole carbide drilling by bar-and-arm or fan drill set-ups at sublevels, the large diameter holes were drilled full stope height from the top sill, which substantially reduced development, drilling time and improved fragmentation. These drills however, were difficult to move and set-up, and had a high maintenance cost and low productivity. The capital outlay and extensive technical development required to improve these drills and reduce the high drilling costs however, was economically unattractive. New development in drills and button bits INTRODUCTION The major mining operations of the Ontario Division of Inco Metals Company are located in the Sudbury Basin. Around the rim of this geo- logical formation and within thirty miles of the City of Sudbury are located eleven under- ground mines of the Company, two of which are on standby. In addition, there is one mine in Northwestern Ontario at Shebandowan, 1127 Km (700 miles) northwest of Sudbury. In 1980 ore production totalled 10.6 x 10 mt (11.7 million tons) from underground and open pit operations. Underground mining methods include blasthole, vertical retreat, sublevel caving, cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill. Inco reduction operations in the Sudbury area include two concentrators, one smelter, one iron ore recovery plant, a copper refinery a nickel refinery and a high purity plate rolling mill. As well, an electrolytic nickel refinery is located on Lake Erie at Port Colborne, near Niagara Falls. In the Sudbury District, Inco employees total 14,278 of whom 6,490 are directly employed in the mining and milling operations. During 1980-2000, the Florida phosphate industry will deplete its central Florida Polk County reserves. As a result, new mines will be built in the so-called southern Florida reserve areas. These mines will require new mining, beneficiation, and tailings disposal technologies since southern reserves have different characteristics than have been encountered in the central Florida deposits. Furthermore, government regulations will necessitate development of new tailings and clay disposal methods. This paper reviews these challenges for the Phosphate industry and how these opportunities can be expected to effect plant design and plant operating practices.

The effectiveness of digital computing machines in making technical calculations depends on how well the work is arranged to utilize the capability of the machines. This note presents a particularly useful way of calculating hydrocarbon vapor-li.quid equilibrium in the flash vaporization (or condensation) system. The method is well suited to sequence-controlled computing equipment. It is not limited to equilibrium calculations and may be used for solution of most implicit equations in one variable. INTRODUCTION There is increasing interest in the use of electronic digital computers in research and engineering calculations. This is a fortunate and inevitable trend in view of both the increasingly extensive numerical work which is becoming a routine part of many daily production operations and growing demand for the overwhelming amounts of calculations required by newly developed numerical methods for solving heretofore unsolved problems. Machines are in many ways ideally suited to the task but of necessity present certain difficulties. for a particular poblem to be solved must often be formulated quite differently from the way it would be arranged for manual solution. This is done in order to take advantage of the inherent speed and precision of electronic computers and at the same time to limit the need for number storage to the capacity of the machine. Therefore, this note is submitted to present a general and quite powerful method of finding solutions of the frequently encountered implicit equation: F(x,y1,y2,...ya)=0.......(1) where the root, x, is to be found for a given set of y1, ... yn.. The procedure is well suited for use with computing machines, for it usually requires but little storage or programming beyond that necessary to evaluate F. When the copper smelters were built, in Montana, all of the refractory products which were used in their construction were shipped in from Eastern factories. It was apparent that if a material suitable for the manufacture of these products could be found within the State, a saving of freight could be effected and a new industry built up. Prospecting for such materials was started and experiments were made with samples from numerous deposits. Considerable effort and funds were expended in an attempt to manufacture silica brick from Dillon quartz, a light colored sandstone that is found near Dillon, Mont., on the Oregon Shortline railroad. As a brick material the Dillon quartz was a failure, but it has proved very satisfactory as a silica cement. It is now being used in laying silica brick and for reverberatory furnace bottoms. A bed of quartzite that is particularly suited to the manufacture of high-grade silica brick was finally discovered at Browns Spur, 6 miles west of Anaconda. The material from this deposit is now being used in the manufacture of the Anaconda silica brick, which have gained a wide reputation for heat-resisting and lasting qualities. The analysis of an average sample of this quartz is: SiO2, 96.7; Fe2O3, 0.3; Al208, 2.5; CaO, 0.3 per cent. The very low percentage of fluxing ingredients makes this a most refractory material. All of the Anaconda silica brick are hand molded. Various types of brick machines have been tried, but the hand-mold process proved the best suited to the manufacture of silica brick from this material. The silica is first put through a jaw crusher and is then dumped into wet pans, where 4 per cent. of lime paste is added, to produce a bond. Without the lime the material would not be plastic enough to mold. After a few minutes' grinding in the wet pans the material is conveyed to the molder, who forces it into the molds by hand. The brick are then dumped on pallets and placed in the drier, where they are left. until dry enough to be set in the kilns. Some of the brick are re-pressed before being dried. They are burned about five days, in round down-draft kilns. It is not necessary to have as much heat in the kilns as the brick will be subjected to when in use in the furnaces. Montana refractories are used in smelters throughout the West. Prospecting for fire clays was also carried on.
