The following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. 'The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which mag stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. 'The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. Inasmuch as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a com-pressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Although these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. A PERMANENT assay office is commonly established as part of the general plant equipment of operating gold and silver properties, but during the development stage of a mine, the cost of such an office is usually so assay work must be done elsewhere. THE development of the North Lily ground, which lies in the East Tintic district, Utah,. about half a mile northwest of the famous Tintic Standard mine, was undertaken by the International Smelting Co. on purely geological reasoning. The geologic theory on which this work was based resulted from several years' intensive study of the East Tintic district by the geological department of the International Smelt-ing Co., who were, during this period, indebted to many for valuable suggestions that were adopted and became part, of the gradually maturing concept. For example, E. J. Raddatz, president of the Tintic Standard Mining Co., first called attention to the significance of rhyolite alteration; J. W. Wade, assistant manager, contributed greatly to our knowledge of the great Tintic Standard orebodies; and so on all along. the line. In short, the ultimate theory embodies the aggregate experience and thought of all those most familiar with the area in question. The problem in brief was this: is the Tintic Standard deposit an isolated occurrence of ore, or are other ore deposits to be found in the vicinity? If the latter is the case, where can these others be looked for? The difficulty of the problem lay in the fact that most of the area is covered by rhyolite; beneath which lies the limestone in which the orebodies occur; so that the available evidence as to the structure of the formations, and, their mineralization; is of the slightest. The sav-ing features of the case, by means of which it proved possible to solve the problem, are three in number first, the rhyolite is pre-mineral and hence has been exposed to alteration by the mineralizing agencies; second, certain persistent dikes and fissures are con-tinuous through the rhyolite into the limestone below; and third, the extensive underground workings of the Tintic Standard gave a good basis for study of the sub-rhyolite structure and the occurrence of ore. The rhyolite overlies the Tintic Standard orebodies, and over them shows a large patch of brownish altera-tion. This patch proves to be due to chloritization and sericitization, which has spread out from certain zones of dikes, pebble-dikes and fissures. The dikes are com-posed of a light fine-grained rock which has been altered to an aggregate of quartz, alunite, and magnetite. They can be traced southwest to a common center in Big Hill, the entire mass of which is composed of the same material. The pebble-dikes, which consist of a mass of rounded pebbles, mainly quartzite, in a matrix ranging from the same quartz-alunite-magnetite rock as above to almost pure vein quartz, are closely asso-ciated with these light dikes, but in general extend farther northeast. They thus represent a specialized phase of the intrusive action of which Big Hill is the center. The brown chloritized rhyolite, then, is an alteration product due, in all. probability, to emana-tions closely associated with this phase. Since it coin-cides geographically with the Tintic Standard area of highly altered limestone, with its many great ore-bodies, it has been concluded, that it is the expression in the rhyolite of activities which have also altered and mineralized' the underlying limestone.

This old and well-known method of determining silver is, in bullion work, so far superior to the furnace-assay that it is looked upon with reverential awe by many, if not by most, users, and its ease of execution, with proper equipment, commends it highly where much commercial bullion work on silver is required. The method is so thoroughly well known that a description of it here may seem to be unnecessary, but many thousands of determinations are annually made by it in the U. S. Mint Service and its practice is there reduced to an art. This is necessary both for the sake of economy of time, and because high-grade work with it requires constant practice. It is useless for a person who uses it only occasionally to expect to attain high accuracy with it, without spending more time upon a detemination than is warranted in a busy commercial laboratory. It is always employed in the Mint service whenever possible, but its chief field is in the determination of silver in standard silver (ingots and coin), which is 900 fine in silver and 100 fine in copper, and I shall first briefly outline its use on this metal and then take up various points in detail, especially as related to the accuracy of the results obtained. For this determination 1,115 mg. of standard metal are weighed and transferred to a glass-stoppered bottle, the metal is dissolved in nitric acid, and 100 cc. of a standard solution of NaCl run in. The bottle is then vigorously shaken and a measured portion of a decimal salt solution added, and again shaken, if necessary. These operations are repeated until the silver is precipitated. Standard metal being 900 fine, 1,115 mg. should carry 1,003.5 mg. of silver, which is a convenient figure to work with.

On Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea, Bougainville Copper Ltd. (BCL) has successfully applied electronic data processing (EDP) techniques to pit operations and mine planning. Though the EDP program is not complete, BCL has realized significant improvements in short and long range mine planning, and equipment and manpower utilization. About 80% of BCL's 4000 employees are Papua New Guinea nationals, and most have little education or training. The operational characteristics of the computer equipment, however, have been quickly adapted by users with low educational standards.

SINCE the "Days of Forty-nine" California has been the premier gold producing state of the union. The greatest production was recorded in 1.852, during which year the state's placer and lode deposits yielded over 81 millions. This peak was followed by a steady decline to about 12 millions during the years 1888 to 189.3, a period marked by the cessation of gravel mining. After 1893, production increased to a new peak of over 22 million in 1915, thereafter decreasing steadily to something over 13 million in 1923. Today; California's gold production shows a decrease of 84 per cent. as compared with the output of 1852, and a decrease of 41 per cent, as compared with 1915. It is not a difficult matter to find the causes of this more recent decline. In 1916 there began an upward swing in the cost of labor, which represents approximately 60 per cent. of the cost of mining, and in the price of supplies, representing the remaining, 40 per cent. This rise continued until 1922 and since that year there has been no decided tendency either upward or downward. The increase in the cost of mining since 1916 is variously estimated at from 50 to 75 per cent.; the price of gold has remained fixed at $20.67 per oz. This condition resulted in wiping out the profits of the low-grade operations which, in recent years, have constituted California's main source of supply of gold ore. It is now predicted that there will be renewed activity in California- gold mining. What are chances for the materialization of this forecast? A boom or even a revival of gold mining must of necessity be brought about or accompanied by one or more of the following factors: 1. A decrease in the cost of mining. 2. An increase in the price of gold. 3. New capital for development. 4. The discovery of new deposits. 5. The revival of hydraulic mining.

In the last several decades, techniques of data collection have been rapidly evolving. Automated spectroscopic techniques in the chemical analysis of rocks for example have advanced to the point that we can analyze samples faster than we can grind them. Remote sensors of LANDSAT give us intensity measurements in four color bands of every acre of the U.S. every 19 days. Common depth point seismic instrumentation systems used at sea for surveying and networks of seismometers arrayed around the country for earthquake studies likewise are generating vast amounts of data. These along with many other earth science data generating systems have caused a veritable data explosion. How do we deal with these enormous amounts of geologic data presently being produced as well as those produced in the past, and to be produced in the future? There is an immediate need to acquire and utilize past and present basic data in order to address today's national earth science problems. Also data being collected and stored now must be compatible with future data in order for us to be able to undertake the wide spectrum of analysis that must be made in the future. This is a big order! In order to organize and to be able to analyze these data, the USGS has embarked on a wide ranging program of compatible data base construction and the development of computer technology, based on interactive computing, to facilitate resource assessments and analyses. These activities are analogous to two sides of a coin. One side deals with the logic, philosophy, and mechanics of information storage and retrieval; and the other side deals with the sensible application of computer technology to the treatment of data. Although nickel was in use in alloys long before the Christian era, the metal was not discovered until 1751, when Cronstedt recognized it in niccolite from Sweden. The Chinese apparently used a nickel alloy, known as "pahfong" thousands of years ago and Persian coins dating farther back than 200 B.C. consist of a copper-nickel alloy similar to some of those now in use in coins. The pure metal was first prepared about 1775 and the metal was refined for commercial purposes some years later. The nickel industry did not attain much prominence until the ores in New Caledonia were discovered. Exports of ore from that country began in 1875 and since that date there has been an ever-increasing world output of nickel and a great expansion in the uses of the metal except during short periods of commercial and industrial depression. Previous to 1875, for a number of years, Norway was the chief producer, although the metal was mined also in Sweden, Finland, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, China, the United States and other countries. With the discovery of nickel deposits in the Sudbury district, Ontario, a new factor was introduced into the nickel industry and Sudbury has since become the overwhelmingly dominant feature in the world's nickel markets. Although nickel was first discovered in Canada as early as 1848 near the north shore of Lake Huron and nickel-copper sulfides were found in 1856 by surveyors working close to the present location of the important rnine at Creighton, in the Sudbury field, it was not until 1883 that any importance was attached to this field. In that year copper sulfide attracted attention where the main line of the Canadian Pacific railroad was being projected across Canada to the Pacific coast. Mining began near this discovery in 1889 but in the meantime operations had begun in 1886 in other parts of the field and by 1890 about 100,000 tons of ore had been raised. In the Sudbury field, as in Norway and at the old Lancaster Gap mine in Pennsylvania, the ore was first mined for its copper content and difficully in the refining of the copper led to the discovery of the important proportions of nickel in the ore. The role of the precious metals is changing rapidly. They are becoming primarily materials of modern industry, and their decorative and monetary functions are diminishing in relative importance. Certainly gold is still the premier metal for jewelry, as silver is for silverware. But these uses are not growing nearly so fast as are the uses of these metals in a variety of industries. This is even more true of the platinum metals. Moreover, this is true despite the fact that the precious metals are highly expensive and liable to substitution by the base metals in cases where this is feasible. For the fact is that the physical and chemical properties of the precious metals make them relatively invulnerable to substitution; where they can be replaced by the base metals, they have been, and the opportunity for further substitution is, therefore, limited. SILVER In November 1969 the United States Treasury stopped minting the only remaining coin with any silver content. That was the silver-clad Kennedy half dollar, which had a silver content of approximately 40%. The step was taken out of necessity, because of the rising shortfall between world mine production and consumption. It was important to divert the 35 to 40 million oz of silver per year used for the minting of this coin into the open market, where it would be available for industrial consumption. This decision was important, not only for its practical effect but also for what it symbolized. Only four years earlier, in 1965, the Treasury had used 320 million oz of silver" for the full range of coinage. Now not an ounce of silver goes into the United States coinage. The reason is simple and yet complicated. For many years the U.S. Treasury had purchased silver at prices which provided a subsidy to domestic producers. As a result, silver producers were eager to sell to the Treasury, and that agency built up a huge supply of the metal -almost 2 billion oz by- 1961. But, as the free-market price neared $1.29, the basic melt value of the coinage, the Treasury became a seller of silver, not a buyer, and its stock was depleted rapidly. The Treasury lost more :than a billion ounces of silver in the years 1962 through 1965, and it continued to lose silver, both through coinage and through sales to consumers, through 1969. The Government continued to sell silver to consumers at the rate of 1.5 million oz a week, even after terminating the 40% silver Kennedy half dollar. Pebble grinding was used at Lake Shore Mines in 1949. A full description of experimental evidence and test plant results was published in 1952 1 and further operating details in 1954 2.' In more recent years the term autogenous grinding has been coined and is now frequently seen in the technical literature. Autogenous crushing and/or grinding covers any grinding mill in which the larger pieces of ore are made to grind the fine pieces; the crushing and grinding may be either dry or wet. This discussion deals only with wet autogenous grinding, and only in the fine grinding part of the circuit, i.e., from 6 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. The term pebble milling could apply to fine autogenous grinding in which the pebbles are made from the ore itself, or it could also refer to grinding with pebbles, such as flint pebbles, from a source outside the mine. The first mill to use screened ore to grind the ore (1949) was Lake Shore Mines, Kirkland Lake, Ont. Pebbles were screened from the jaw crusher discharge and used in 5x16-ft tube mills which had been converted to 6 ft 8 in. by 16-ft grate discharge pebble mills. The same general practice was adopted the following year by the Wright-Har-greaves Mine in Kirkland Lake. Shortly after that the Neptune Mines in Nicaragua started correspondence with the writer concerning the possibility of using screened ore for grinding in their plant. They first ran some plant-scale tests which confirmed the Lake Shore findings, with the ultimate result that their plant was successfully converted in 1956 to an autogenous grinding plant. In 1957-1958 the writer was successful in converting the grinding plant of Renabie Mines in northern Ontario to autogenous grinding. In all these plants the existing grinding equipment was converted, usually by expanding the diameter of the shell to make the change from steel grinding to ore pebble grinding mills. In all the above plants primary grinding was done in either small rod mills or ball mills. These mills first reduced the pebble mill feed to about 6 mesh. The final grinding in the pebble mills varied from 75 pct —200 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. At Lake Shore three stages of pebble milling were used, with a different size pebble in each stage. In other parts of the world interest was being shown in this form of grinding, and in March 1952 the writer had some correspondence with the mill staff at Outokumpu in Finland, with regard to the pebble system used at Lake Shore. At Stockholm in 1957 the account of the crushing and grinding system at Outokumpu was presented in a paper by H. Tanner and T. Heikkinen.V his is the only ore grinding plant that does not use grate discharges on its pebble mills; trunnion discharges equipped with heavy reverse spirals retain the pebble load. The first new mill designed to use screened ore as a grinding medium was the Bicroft mill at Bancroft, Ont., which began operation in the fall of 1956. In 1957 this plant was followed by similar installations at Faraday Mines, also in the Bancroft area, and the North Rankin Nickel Mines in the North West Territories. In 1958 the Dyno Mill at Bancroft was converted, using the same type of grinding. Since all these plants, designed by Kilborn Engineering (1954) Ltd., were originally planned as pebble grinding mills, they were able to take full advantage of the latest design and technique. They are neat in appearance and very efficient and easy to operate. Effect of Ore Hardness: It is often commented that this type of autogenous grinding applies only to hard siliceous ores. Experience has shown that this is not so. In the past ten years the author has had an opportunity to test more than a dozen ores, several of which were quite soft. One of these was shale. The softer ores actually make better looking pebbles than the hard ores. These soft ores produced no particles in the intermediate size range which could not be ground by the largest pebbles in the mill charge. Slabby ores, such as shales, make a suitable pebble for the —6 mesh grinding. It is not generally recognized that for fine grinding a spherical medium is not essential or more efficient. Another frequent objection to pebble grinding is the belief held by some operators that there is too much variation in the hardness of their particular ore to make it acceptable as a source of pebble media. Experience has also shown that this is not a serious problem at all. The variation in pebble load due to changes in the ore hardness is nothing like as great as most people would expect, and the method used for feeding the ore and controlling the the load in the mills is more than sufficient to take care of daily variations in ore hardness. The incidence of liquid inzmiscibility in binar)) indium alloys has been theoretically analyzed on the basis of the Hildebrand-Alott equation. Bedictions of miscibility or otherwise Imve in general been found to agree with those phase diagrams that are already publislzed in the literature. Out of a total of 27 systems, where either the complete phase diagrams are published or liquid immiscible behavior is reported, the Predictions agree with the experimental data in 25 systems, the exceptions being the Te-In and Ni-In systems. According to the equation, liquid immiscibility is also indicated in the binary alloys of indium with K, Rb, Cs, Na, Sr, Ba, Ti, Zr, V. Nb(Cb), Ta, W, U, Re, Ru, Rh, Os, and Ir. RECENT investigations by the author have shown that indium when alloyed with iron, chromium, and cobalt shows liquid immiscible behavior.1"3 The Fe-In phase diagram shows a wide range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible.4,5 No intermediate phases are present in this system. No precise information is available about the extent of liquid immiscibility in the Co-In system. However, it is certain that there is a range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible and that there are two or three intermediate phases,376 in the system. Liquid immiscibility is also strongly indicated in the Cr-In system and no evidence was obtained in the brief investigation to indicate the presence of intermediate Cr-In phases.2 The present paper deals with a theoretical analysis of binary alloys of indium with certain elements of the periodic table and indicates the systems where liquid immiscibility may be expected. The incidence of liquid immiscibility in binary systems has been theoretically examined by many workers and many excellent papers are available on the subject. In this paper, the alloy systems are examined on the basis of the more recent ideas proposed by Mott.7,8 It has been claimed8 that the Mott parameter predicts the incidence of miscibility or otherwise with reasonable accuracy and consistency. BACKGROUND TO MOTT&apos;S APPROACH Hildebrand applied his immiscibility rule for non-polar liquids to various alloy systems.9 The basis of this rule is that the equation for the excess free energy of formation of a liquid solution is rather similar to the theoretical expression for the energy of mixing of a regular solution. He postulated that when the heat of mixing is sufficiently high, separation into liquid phases will occur and the condition for complete CUPPAM DASARATHY is at the Research Centre, British Steel Corporation, (South Wales Group), Port Talbot, Glamorgan, Great Britain. The term (?EVA/VA)1/2 was regarded as a measure of the binding energy of the component A and was called the L&apos;solubility parameter" 8A. On this basis immiscibility occurs when 1/2(VA+VB)(bA-bBf > 2RT [2] Apparently, however, there were several inconsistencies in that according to Eq. [2] several systems known to be miscible in the liquid state were predicted as immiscible. MOTT&apos;S ANALYSIS ~ott&apos;" regards that the reason for the inconsistencies arising out of Hildebrand&apos;s equation was largely due to the electrochemical attraction between the two elements, not being considered. Hence, Eqs. In Eq. [4], the numerator was called the Hildebrand term, the denominator, the electronegativity term, and their ratio, the Mott number. Mott observed that if the Mott number of a given binary system was greater than the maximum number of Pauling bonds which the two metals could form, then liquid immiscibility could be expected. The maximum number of bonds formed by a given metal was considered to be directly related to the number of bonding electrons available, i.e., to its maximum valency. Since the valencies of the elements considered vary from 1 to 6, Mott assumed that if the ratio of the Hildebrand term to the electronegativity term was >6, then immiscibility could be expected. On the contrary, if the ratio is <1, the metals should be miscible. Further, the alloying behavior is not only influenced by the valencies of the two elements but also by the relative atomic sizes that influence the types of packing and hence the coordination number. Mott considers that on average the maximum number of near neighbors of unlike atoms is 6. Thus, on both valency and size factor considerations, Mott concludes that the maximum number of bonds&apos; possible in any system was 6, this being the upper limit of the Mott number for miscibility. IN OFFERING a few comments and suggestions on trends in mining practice, and the methods and tools of tomorrow&apos;s mining, perhaps it will be appropriate to start with the subject of education. Charles Kettering, one of the best-known scientists and experimentalists in the automotive industry once said, in effect, that tech- 111ca1 schools have to be carefid not to teach a lot of hard and fast rules that may have been true once, but aren&apos;t so any more, or won&apos;t be presently. Possibly the mining school of the future will concern itself less with what has happened and more with what is going to happen. It will be built about or around problems. Such a school will be judged, not by the number of its students but by the quality of its improvements. To such a school the industry will send for men to solve particular problems. The industry will doubtless at some time sup- port such a school financially though a lot of hard work will be required to organize miners to undertake such financing, primarily because the mining industry, other than that concerned with iron and steel, is too loosely knit. Each company tends to its own knitting too closely for its own good. Wouldn&apos;t it be splendid if the mining industry would finance a "problem school" as suggested by Mr. Kettering and others.

THE year 1936 has seen rehabilitation of many plants which had been closed or severely curtailed. The Steptoe smelter of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. has been transformed by a rearrangement of the flow of material and utilization of mechanical handling to a maximum. The Phelps Dodge Corp. reports the construction of newer and better reverberatories at the Copper Queen smelter, and of particular interest, a single high-pressure waste-heat boiler placed directly over the uptake. There has also been a complete reconstruction of the smelter at the Laurel Hill plant of the Nichols Copper Co.

WAR undoubtedly accelerates metallurgical progress, although its most obvious effect is a tremendous waste of materials. The necessity for restrictions in normal uses of metals results in a search for substitutes or for enhanced properties that will make a limited supply last longer. An insatiable demand for more metal to be produced more quickly favors trial of new processes, new metallurgical tools, and new methods of fabrication. Greatest advance is made, of course, in practical physical and process metallurgy. Theoretical or fundamental research necessarily must take a secondary position, and is so regarded in this review. It is not that developments in theoretical physical metallurgy are lacking entirely, but, following the same trend noted in other countries as they entered war activities, attention in the U.S.A. has been shifted strongly to those developments having an immediate practical application.

The production of all Russian fields incressed from approsimatctly 74,000,000 bbl. during 1926-27, to approximately 83,000,000 bbl. during 1927-28. Of this amount Baku was responsible for 54,.500,000 bbl., Grozny for 25,800,000 bbl., and Emba for 1,200,000 bbl. Accordingly, the proportional importance of the Grozny oil field has been considerably increased, the present production being twice that of 1913. The most notable factor of production during 1927-28 was the importance of gushers; 40.8 per cent. of the total was thus obtained. In the Baku fields 26 per cent. of the total, and in Grozny 74.2 percent&apos;. of the total were produced by naturally flowing wells. This may be explained by the reduction in authorizations for drilling by the central authorities, and, accordingly, the local trusts increased the production to the planned figures at the expense of the proved prolific reserves. In Baku region, the Surnkany oil field produced 36.1 per cent. of the total Baku production, or an equivalent of 53,800 bbl. per clay, the largest percentage coining from the fifth horizon. Nest year&apos;s plans call for continual development of that horizon as well as of the sixteenth horizon in the Bibi-Eibat field, which was opened lately. In the Grozny fields the New Area (Bellik) WAS responsible for 79.4 per cent. of the total production. The authorized plan for 1928-29 production calls for 92,200,000 bid., and a reasonably accurate estimate for 1932--33 production is placed at. 156,000,000 bbl., with Baku contributing 101,800,000 bbl., Grozny 44,100,000 bbl., Emba 6,200,000 bbl., Kuban 2,100,000 bbl., Saghalien Island 1,400,000 bbl., and Russian Turkestan 400,000 bbl. In connection with recent discoverices in the Baku area these figures art. quite conservative. The average production per well per day in the Baku oil fields was 49.2 bbl., in Grozny 175 bbl.; in detail, Surakany oil field averaged 250 bbl., and the New Area in Grozny 514 bbl. per day. New completions in all Baku fields averaged 264 bbl. per day, and in Grozny 970 bbl. pel. day. These figures show a considerable progress in the technical developnlent of all fields, compared even with the prerevolution figures, since all the mprovements are noted in the fields that arc over 30 years old.

The present paper describes a number of experiments with fine silver, coin silver, silver-cadmium oxide and silver-nickei-copper compacts, prepared by powder metallurgical methods. The test data are of a preliminary nature, since most of the work was exploratory. Fine Silver Eject of Compacting Pressure on Hardness and Density during Cold and Hot Pressing The cold-welding properties of silver have received considerable attention and the welding characteristics are functions of such variables as: cleanliness of metal particles (impurities and adsorbed gases), chemical nobility of particles, plasticity and hardness, particle assortment, particle shape, particle porosity, apparent density, temperature, pressure, time, recrystalliza-tion characteristics. Chemical nobility, plasticity and low temperature of recrystallization after work-hardening are responsible for the excellent low-temperature bonding properties of silver. Several series of compacts were pressed at pressures of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 70 and 80 tons per square inch, at temperatures of 32°C. (room temperature), l00°, 2000, 300°, 400°, and 450°C. Silver powder of minus 325-mesh, produced by displacing silver from a nitrate solution by means of copper, was used. The density was calcuiated from accurately measured and weighed compacts. The hardness was measured on the Rockwell F scale. The investigation shows that an increase in pressure promotes a higher density and hardness regardless of pressing temperature, up to a temperature of 400° C. The pressure-density curves at various pressing temperatures are shown in Fig. I, the pressure-hardness curves at various pressing temperatures, in Fig. z. The greatest increase in both hardness and density was obtained in the pressure range of 5 to 20 tons per square inch. A compact from each series was annealed at 300°C. in air, for various lengths of time. The hardness values after annealing are shown in Table I. A minimum hardness was obtained after one hour of annealing. No change in density occurred during annealing. The maximum density was obtained at 80 tons per sq. in., and at this pressure the hardness is equal to that of hard-drawn wrought

THE genial assistant to the president of the New York Trust Co. is the latest addition to the Institute&apos;s board of directors, having been elected at the March meeting of the hoard to fill the unexpired term of the late E. E. Ellis. Usually when a banker is appointed to the board of a company the reason is obvious; the difference in this case is that the New York Trust Co. has some of the Institute&apos;s money, instead of vice versa. But Harry Hamilton is not really a banker-at least not primarily. Frefluently big financial institutions have a good mining engineer on their staffs to keep them from financing too many "cats and dogs." At any rate Mr. Hamilton gave up his consulting practice in San Francisco back in 1927, to accept his present position in New York. Until then, from the time he graduated from Yale in 1904, lie was constantly engaged in mining operations of one kind or another in the West and in Mexico. His first job was at Christmas, Ariz., where lie did "sampling and miscellaneous work" for the Saddle Mountain Mining Co. The writer tramped up to, all over, and through that property one hog day many years later, when it was run by the Christmas Mining Co., and carp assure the reader that without doubt the young Yale graduate got some good experience and was well broken in. From there Mr. Hamilton went to Cananea for a time, and then to the Copper Queen, at Bisbee, where he was a valued member of the rigging gang. An assignment of assaying and sampling for the Shan¬non Copper Co. at Metcalf lasted for a few months and then he accepted a job for a year with the geological department
