For many years the author has been cognizant of the difficulty encountered by some in treating with the water influx formulas for unsteady-state fluid flow as pertain to the material balance equation. This has particularly applied in establishing reservoir performance and identifying reservoir pressure, which to the practicing engineer has entailed a trial-and-error procedure, and for others has necessitated resorting to computing devices and reiteration processes. In retrospect this difficulty stems from the fact that reservoir pressure in the material balance formulas, as well as associated with the water influx equations, is an inexplicit term, and the work reported in the past is irrefutable. However, what will be presented in this paper is another approach to the problem, whereby the entire material balance equation will be treated by the Laplace transformation, and reservoir pressure which hereto has been inexplicit, can now be isolated by mathematical procedure to relate that parameter with all the factors contributing to its change. This is the simplification entailed, that treats first with an undersaturated oil reservoir as an integrated effect from the inception of production. The second phase pertains to saturated oil reservoirs that encompass a survey traverse. Although both methods of approach are necessarily different in aspect, the most interesting fact is that the mathematics so deduced are identical. Both the linear and radial water-drive systems are incorporated. for which an illustrated factual example is offered for the latter, treating with a saturated oil reservoir. INTRODUCTIO N What is performed in this work is the simplification of an involved computation by advanced analysis. Although such may be construed as a contradiction when one treats with higher mathematics; nevertheless, when direction is given to such an undertaking the results car. be most revealing. Likewise, it is to be mentioned that the bases for these mathematics have been developed on the expediency of the occasion. This is not to be inferred as a qualification of this work, but rather the demands frequently placed upon the author in his private prac- tice in meeting a time limit. A situation, instead of being fraught with hazards, often has given emphasis to creative thought. What will be entailed in this work is the simplification of the material balance formulas by the Laplace Transformation., Although this reveals entirely new horizons that will be given expression in a forthcoming tract, it suffices in the present instance to limit our attention to this phase of the development that treats both with an undersaturated and saturated oil reservoir. To orient the reader's thoughts as to what is involved in this simplification is the recognition that reservoir pressure, as such, is an inexplicit term in the material balance equation. This is the independent parameter that defines the total history of performance in the author's' unsteady-state water influx formulas, as well as the basis for the physical dependency of fluid behavior within the formation as prescribed in the Schil-thuis' material balance equation. Therefore, to isolate reservoir pressure, which is the most essential factor in any reservoir study, is rather a cumbersome procedure entailing either a trial-and-error calculation for the engineer; or as some prefer, a reiteration process performed on a computing device. However, once such an equation can be transcribed as a Laplace transformation, this inexplicitness so expressed can be alleviated to identify reservoir pressure as an explicit function of all the factors contributing to its change. This is the simplification encompassed, that will treat first with an undersaturated oil reservoir as an integrated effect from the inception of production, and secondly, with a saturated oil reservoir as a survey traverse. Although the two approaches are necessarily different because of the uhvsics involved. it is an interesting commentary that the mathematics are identical, showing the interdependency of the two methods. In order to acquaint the reader with this development, the simplest case will be treated first; namely, an under-saturated oil reservoir subject to a linear water drive. However, what may be construed for this example as an idealistic case is actually a most practical application in certain parts of the world, where the size of the fields are so large that radial water-drive approaches the configuration of a linear drive. A classical theory of solid solutions involving neavest-nergkbor intevactions with both central and linked-central forces between atoms has been developed. It has been found that the theory, where it can be checked quantitatively, is in ageement with experiment. The theory encompasses a description of many diverse pkenomena, such as antiphase shift structures, size effect, relative stabilities of various solutions, lattice para,neters, and order-disorder transitions. In particulav. a quantitative prediction not involving adjustable pavameters is made concevning the deviation of the Au-Cu interatonlic distance in long-range ordered (Ll,) Cu-Au I fronl the average distance based on the distances in pure gold and copper. This prediction, which is in agreement with expel-intent, has not been encompassed by any preuious theory. The theory of order-disorder is fragmentary. That is, no one theory exists that can explain the variety of qualitative phenomena observed. Further, many theories are not in good quantitative agreement with experiment. This subject has been reviewed by Muto and Takagi, Tuttman, and Oriani.3 There exists no doubt that the quasi-chemical approximation is not a complete description and that the inclusion of strain energy using macroscopic elasticity theory concepts leads to results in disagreement with experimenL4 The observation of antiphase domains and ordering systems such as Cu-Pt has led to Brillouin zone treat-ment of the order-disorder transition as opposed to the classical Ising model. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that it is possible to develop a pairwise approximation model that can explain many of the observed order-disorder phenomena that have puzzled investigators in the past. This theory is based upon an empirical model due to ergmman' for the elastic constants of metals. This model is generalized for multicomponent systems. As will be shown, the theory yields a short-range ordering energy for the disordered solution which differs from the ordering energy calculated from the differences in energy of disordered and long-range ordered solutions. It will be demonstrated that there is no necessary correlation between heats of formation and the tendency to order or between size effect and the tendency to order. Also, the existence of antiphase domains and iso-short-range-order systems that form superlattices (Cu-Pt) is predicted on the basis of the theory. Further, the relative stability of competing superlattices is calculable from the theory. If single-crystal elastic-moduli data are available for the pure components and one superlattice then there exists but one adjustable parameter in the calculation of lattice parameters for both the disordered and ordered solid solutions. In one special case, no adjustable parameters are required and a quantitative prediction is made. For the calculation of energies and partial order, there exists but one additional adjustable parameter, the pair-exchange energy V used in the quasi-chemical approximation (or the Ising model.) However, in these calculations, much more precise values are required for the single-crystal elastic moduli than available if the quantitative uncertainties in the predicted values of the energies are to be sufficiently small. THEORY ~er~man' has developed a model with which he was able to obtain fair agreement with experiment for the relations between the elastic constants for metals. This model which we shall call Bergman's model is a linear combination of his models I and 11. In effect, Bergman, in this model, considers that each interatomic distortion is composed of two components: a classical central force distortion with an associated central force constant and what we shall call a linked-central force distortion with an associated linked central-force constant. The linked-central force distortion component obeys the constraint that the sum of such distortions over all the bonds equals zero. No constraint is imposed on the classical central force distortion component. Bergman' derives the constraint on the linked-central force distortion on the basis of application of Pauling's relation between bond distortion and bond number to metals.ga This assumption is not logically necessary, however, and the Bergman model may be taken as a mathematical model for elastic constants, e.g., a purely empirical model without a physical basis. In the present work, the method of Bergman has been applied to two-component systems (solid solutions). In place of an external strain—which would allow a calculation of the elastic constants for the two-component system—it is considered that internal interatomic distortions exist as a consequence of having three potentially unequal distortion-free interatomic distances and but one "average" interatomic distance. It is assumed that the distortion-free interatomic distances between atoms of the same element are those found in the pure element having the same undistorted crystal structure as the solid solution. The distortion-free interatomic distance between unlike atoms is in general not measurable except in the probably nonexistent

The Widmanstatten figures found in the steels have been long recognized and in some aspects carefully studied,' especially as they occur in cast hypoeutectoid alloys. Aside from the practical importance of the structures obtained in the steels by various heat treatments, a study of the characteristics of these figures is interesting because of the rich opportunity the system affords to obtain new data on the mechanism of segregation from solid solutions. This opportunity is twofold: first, by changing composition within the austenite range the proeutectoid precipitate may be changed from that of ferrite to that of cementite, thus offering the same opportunity for changing the type of precipitate while maintaining the same basic lattice as that afforded by the Cu-Zn alloys;2 and second, the eutectoid inversion leads upon drastic quenching to the formation of martensite, a Widman-statten figure of unique interest from the crystallographic viewpoint, particularly in comparison with those formed on slow cooling.3 We have, therefore, two types of structure to study: that formed on slow cooling of hypoeutectoid and hypereutectoid alloys, and that formed on quenching hypoeutectoid, eutectoid, and hypereutectoid alloys. For each of these types of structure we require the crystallographic plane in the mother austenite along which the precipitate forms (we shall see that the precipitates in these alloys are invariably platelike in form), and also the orientation of the precipitate upon this plane. General expressions are given to describe macro-segregation in castings and ingots which results from mass flow of solute-rich liquid to feed solidification and thermal contractions. Analytical solutions are given for solidification with planar isotherms (unidirectional and bidirectional heat flow). These solutions describe inverse segregation and centerline segregation. Numerical examples are given for A1-4.5 pct Cu alloy. In 1540, Vannoccio Biringuccio published one of the first references to macrosegregation, describing the problem of exudation and inverse segregation in the manufacture of bronze gun barrels.' Since then, a great many studies of macrosegregation have been reported. Recent work of particular engineering interest includes that of Marburg 2 and others:" on centerline segregation and other types of segregation in large steel ingots, and work of Adams,5 Scheil, 6 and Kirkaldy and youdelis7 on inverse segregation in nonferrous ingots. In most studies on this subject, the various types of macrosegregation have been treated as separate phenomena. For example, quite different mechanisms have been proposed for formation of centerline segregation, negative cone of segregation, inverse segregation, banding, and so forth. In this, and in several papers to follow, it is proposed that these as well as other types of macrosegregation result from the same basic mechanism and can be quantitatively described by the same basic equation. It has often been suggested that some types of segregation (such as centerline segregation and banding) occur as a result of buildup of solute at the tips of growing dendrites.2-4 ,8-10 As example, banding can be induced in centrifugal castings by mechanical vibration, and Northcott 10 suggests this might be due to the influence of the vibration on the boundary layer at the dendrite tips of the growing dendrites. However, in view of the extremely small boundary layer known to exist at the tips of the dendrites,11,12 any interpretation of macrosegregation based on this boundary layer is clearly incorrect. Note that experiment has shown that significant buildup of solute does not occur at dendrite tips in ingot solidification, but even if such buildup occurred the thickness of the enriched zone would only be the order of D/U where D is liquid diffusion coefficient and U is dendrite tip velocity. For usual casting or ingot solidification this solute-enriched layer is 10"3 cm, far too small to account, for example, for centerline segregation.11'12 It has also been suggested that convection in the bulk liquid (ahead of the advancing dendrites) might cause segregation by sweeping away the solute-rich boundary layer in front of the dendrites.3 However, since there is no significant boundary layer, this explanation must be incorrect. The convection might directly cause segregation by penetrating between the dendrite arms, and presumably in a rimming steel ingot it is sufficiently vigorous to cause some segregation in this way. Centerline segregation, however, cannot be interpreted as resulting from this convection since a sharply segregated zone is usually found near the centerline, with the bulk of the ingot being nearly of nominal composition. If convection in the bulk liquid were the direct cause, a gradual change in ingot composition over the entire cross section would be expected. It is known that sudden changes in convection of the bulk liquid during solidification can result in banding,14 but it is not clear that the banding results directly from the effect of convection on solute distribution. Changes in convection also affect thermal conditions in the liquid-solid region of a solidifying ingot. It will be seen later in this paper, and in a paper to follow, that macrosegregation is strongly influenced by these thermal changes. Recognizing that in some cases of ingot solidification (as in solidification of rimming steels) convection in the bulk liquid may have a direct effect on solute distribution, we neglect it in this paper and in the several to follow. Historical-From the beginning of time, all ingenuity of mankind has been concentrated upon the methods of finding gold and unusual deposits in the earth. An illustration (Fig. 1) from the old treatise by Agricola, "De Re Metallica," published in 1580, will serve to show the im-plicit faith of that generation in divining methods. However, it was not until 1920 that real progress was made in prospecting by using the latest advances of the physical sciences. The public interest was stimulated by the successes of these methods on the part of commercial oper-ators, and governmental agencies received many requests for information concerning their relia-bility. There were also, in the late 1920's.high- pressure mine-promotion schemes which used geophysical methods in a very questionable manner, symbolized in Figure 2 as of 1928 by an elec-trified forked stick. Authoritative information concerning such practices for public protection was needed to curb such notorious undertakings. Dr. Scott Turner, then Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, thoroughly understood the situation and was first in the governmental de-partments to recognize the possible value of a study of modern prospecting methods. The Bureau of Mines began this investigation by employing Drs. A. S. Eve and D. A. Keys of McGill University for short periods in the summer in 1927. Their first publication [see 1 of "References" at end of paper] served to illustrate the fundamental scientific principles which underlie geophysical prospecting. This was followed by a second publication [21 giving the results of field-tests. In the light of the rapid improvements during the intervening ten years, these two papers take a historical position. Later a full-time position under Civil Service was planned by the Bureau of Mines for con-tinuous investigations and research concerning geophysics and its applications to prospecting. It was Turner's idea that. since the oil-industry had been making very rapid progress with good results, if mineral mining could also benefit to the same degree, it would be of great help to that industry.

THE results are presented of an investigation to discover the fundamental atomic conditions existing in Corson's high-copper alloys hardenable by means of silicide solution and reprecipitation. The study attracted the writer because it offered a very convenient example of the general type of hardenable alloys exemplified by duralumin, Sykes' iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys and the hardenable lead antimony. SUMMARY OF RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS In brief, the investigation shows that very perfect crystallinity exists in the solid solutions prepared at high temperature to contain as much dissolved silicide as possible. The lattice parameter of copper is altered very little by the amount of cobalt, nickel or chromium, and silicon dissolved. The hardening by drawing at a temperature to initiate precipitation of excess silicon and metal produces a remarkable change in the atomistics of the solid solution. The old perfection of crystallinity in the solid solution is destroyed and the new atomic spacings are of variable magnitude even in one grain, and a condition in a measure resembling that found in martensite is observed. Were no particles whatever precipitated by the drawing action, still ample causes for hardness would be in evidence in the solid solution alone. The lack of plane continuity in the crystal grains would oppose slip in a very effective manner. Complete annealing restores the crystalline perfection in large measure. In these alloys even the most sensitive methods failed to reveal the characteristic pattern of the silicide precipitated by the anneal, but this was largely to be expected as the amount is relatively small.

INSULATING materials include a wide variety of nonmetallic mineral products such as exfoliated vermiculite, expanded gypsum, 85 pct magnesia, diatomite, asbestos, perlite, cellular glass, pumice, silica aerogel, expanded aggregates and mineral wool. Except mineral wool, most of these products, or the materials from which they are manufactured, are described in other chapters of this book. PROPERTIES OF INSULATING MATERIALS The insulating properties of the materials considered in this chapter result in general from entrapping extremely small pockets of air in such a manner that heat is not transferred by convection. The minimum heat conductivities of such insulating materials are slightly greater therefore than the conductivity of still air. In addition, conductivity varies with the overall density of the material, the temperature range in which the measurements are made, and the form into which the material is fabricated. However, the numerical value of heat conductivity should not be the sole criterion of an insulating material; for a particular application it may be advantageous to use a material of somewhat higher conductivity in order to secure other desirable engineering properties. This is especially true with certain materials that are used because of their refractoriness. Comparative insulating values of some commonly used insulating materials are shown in Table 1. In comparing the values presented in this table it should be borne in mind that heat conductivity varies with the mean temperature, with the overall density, and with the amount of moisture present. With fibrous or granular materials it varies with fiber or grain size and with the amount and kind of binder, if any is used. Under some circumstances it may vary with the arrangement of

Alluvial gold was first discovered in Guiana in 1852, in the sands of the Arataye river, by Paulino, a Braziliaii convict. During the following years, gold was found also in the rivers Orapu, CirubQ, etc. In 1873 the famous placers of the Sinnamary system were opened: Saint-Elie, Dieu-Merci, Adieu-Vat, and Couriege. This group of mines has produced nearly $10,000,000, according to official records, not including the gold that escaped the taxes. The discoverer was a mulatto named Vitalo. Except in a few rich spots, the gold was rather evenly distributed along the creeks. In one instance, gold was found in the red dirt from the slope of a hill, which, after transport to the creek, gave an amount of 150 kilograms. The placers of the Mana system, Enfin, Elysee, Pas-Trop-Tot, date from 1878, and their production has been about %g5,000,000. In 1888, the Awa placers, along the boundary bet.ween the French and Dutch Guianas, on the Maroni and its tributaries, were discovered. They have yielded $12,000,000. The only industrial company, the Dutch Guiana Freiich Minillg Co., produced in 15 years about 2,500 kg. of gold, worth $1,500,000. From 1893 dates the famous Carsewene discovery, in territory then in dispute between France and Brazil. A settlement was made recently in favor of Brazil, by arbitration of the Switzerland State Council. Carsewene is said to have produced about $18,000,000 in six years (1894-1900), but not even one-fourth of tho production went through French Quiana and

During the past 20 years the advantages of reinforced concrete as a substitute for timbering in so-called permanent mine openings have been fully recognized, and its use has become almost general practice in the larger mines. The term "permanent mine openings" is used advisedly and is assumed to embrace such openings as ventilation shafts, material shafts and main hoisting shafts, with their adjacent stations, ore pockets, etc. In the concreting of such openings, the actual cost as compared with that of timbering has been of secondary consideration, the support of large openings, elimination of fire hazards, and prevention of interruptions to production being the primary objectives. The ultimate economy, however, of lining such openings with concrete when they are to remain in use during the entire life of the mine, and especially when they are in bad ground, will seldom be questioned. During this 20-year period there have appeared in engineering publications a number of interesting articles on the use of concrete in mines, nearly always describing some specific project of major proportions, such as the concreting of ore pockets, large stations or main hoisting shafts. Such articles are unquestionably of interest, since the projects require considerable engineering thought, not only in the method of excavating large openings, but in their engineering design as well. Concreting of main hoisting shafts, particularly when this is done with the least possible interruption to production, provides some interesting problems. The concreting of haulage drifts of the dimensions commonly found in mines, on the other hand, soon develops into a routine operation, therefore it is with some hesitancy that the author attempts to prepare an article on this subject. The writer can recall only one article on the concreting of mine haulageways, although several articles have been written concerning the concreting of tunnels considerably larger in dimensions than those required in general mine practice.' From the scarcity of articles on the subject, it would seem that the concreting of haulage drifts is still far from being considered general

The National Bureau of Standards received, in August 1940, a number of samples of bridge wire taken from the cables of the General U. S. Grant suspension bridge over the Ohio River at Ports- mouth, Ohio. These cables were 7% in. in diameter under the wrapping and each was made up of 1458 ungalvanized wires of No. 8 gage in 3 parallel-wire strands. The choice of ungalvanized wire was based on the previous satisfactory performance of similar wires in other bridges over periods of 20 to 50 yr. of service(1).2 After about 12 yr. of service a number of breaks were discovered in the Portsmouth bridge cables, most of them at the anchor- age shoes, and they were replaced by cables made up of galvanized wire(2).

ALTHOUGH pig iron from iron ore and red cedar charcoal preceded the mining of coal by many years, for tradition says that Alabama iron was used to shoe the horses of Andrew Jackson's soldiers, coal was not produced until 1830. In that year, coal was mined in Tuscaloosa County, in the vicinity of what is now the University of Alabama, and shipped on flat boats (obviously during the wet season, for there were many shoals) down the Warrior River to Mobile. About that time, the first railroad, the Decatur & Tecumseh, was being constructed in northern Alabama to overcome the obstructions to freight traffic caused by the now well-known Muscle Shoals in the Tennessee River. This railroad was patterned after a railroad at Mauch Chunk, Pa., which was used for hauling anthracite from the Panther Creek valley. The Alabama railroad, which required about four years to complete, was 46 miles long and was used solely for the transportation of cotton. Although it was a failure, it demonstrated the practicability of the undertaking, and the succeeding railroads, which were begun in 1834, 1848, 1852, and 1853, added immeasurably to the development of the coal resources of the state. Between the years 1830 and 1860, practically all the coal mined in the state was dug from the outcrop near the river or from the river beds, and shipped by boat to Mobile. Transporting coal down the Warrior River was one of great risk, required much skill, and frequently had heavy losses. It is recorded that this coal was sold to the gas company in Mobile in 1844; it was most likely mined from the Black Creek Seam. In 1914, on the completion of Lock 17, the Warrior River became a navigable stream from 9 miles above Cordova, Ala., to Mobile and offers a great opportunity for the future development of the coal resources of the state.

This paper deals with an analysis of the conditions leading to the formation of blowholes and surface and subsurface defects in cast low-carbon steels. The theoretical analysis of the problem is based on the concept of the occurrence of deoxidation reactions during cooling of liquid steel and during its solidification. The reaction equilibrium data are given on deoxidation of steel by carbon, silicon, and manganese. The details of the calculations are given on the simultaneous deoxidation of steel by silico-manganese additions to produce a desired level of deoxidation at certain residual concentrations. Based on an idealized model, an attempt is made to calculate the enrichment of solutes in the solidifying liquid entrapped within the interdendritic cells which are known to be less than 200 µ thick. Formulae are derived for the calculation of the change in the residual oxygen content of the enriched liquid steel, controlled by Si/Mn deoxidation. It is shown that for every particular initial silicon, manganese, and oxygen concentration in steel (as residuals in liquid solution at the beginning of solidification) there is a particular carbon concentration below which carbon monoxide, leading to blowholes or pinholes, is not expected to form. There are a number of independent variables which have a decisive influence on the formation of blowholes. For example, it is shown that the position of the curve depicting the critical relation between initial silicon and carbon content for suppression of the evolution of carbon monoxide) can be shifted to lower silicon or higher carbon levels by: increasing manganese content; decreasing oxygen, hydrogen, or nitrogen content; or increasing external pressure on the solidifying mass. FOR the production of sound castings it is essential to prevent the formation of interdendritic worm-holes or pinholes brought about by gas evolution during solidification. Another major problem encountered in solidification of ingots is the formation of surface defects. These problems are thought to be closely associated with the deoxidation reaction occurring in liquid steel during cooling and subsequent solidification. As the liquid becomes richer in impurities during dendritic solidification of steel, a series of reactions may occur in the liquid phase trapped within the branches of growing dendrite platelets. Because of the strong interaction between dissolved oxygen and impurities in liquid steel, the reactions most likely to occur are of the deoxidation type. Precent fracture design procedures are bared on the total fracture area created. A method to distinguish beI,,.ecn total area and [he propped or effective fracture area has not been available. This paper presents a solution to this problem, applicable to horizontal fractures. The difierences between effective fracture area and torn] area are demonstrared in example calculations. This work is hayed on experimentally determined transport efficiencier of solids in sand-liquid slurries. Newtonian and non-Ne~vtoninn systems are considered. INTRODUCTION Fifteen years after commercial introduction, hydraulic fracturing remains the most successful stimulation technique in the oil field. This success is primarily due to ability of induced fractures to penetrate and alter permeabilities deep within formations. Many fields producing today could not have been developed without the hydraulic fracturing process. Because of wide usage, fracture-treatment design has received a great deal of engineering and research effort. This work, resulting in improved equipment and materials, has increased the benefits from fracture treatments as well as the applicability of the process. A major contribution was the development of fluid-loss additives. Necessarily, the number of parameters to be considered in treatment design has steadily increased, resulting in more complicated design techniques. Almost all present design procedures are based on the precepts set forth by Howard and Fast. Relating the fluid volume lost into the formation, the volume required in extending the fracture, and the total slurry volume injected, they developed an expression for the total fracture area created in terms of pertinent treatment parameters. Fluid loss during treatment was expressed as a function of time for three flow mechanisms. Although modifications of fluid loss equations have been made, the total fracture area concept has remained unaltered. A vast amount of field data indicate that induced fractures must be propped and held open to be effective. A notable exception is the Mesa Verde formation in the San Juan basin. However, analysis of these treatments shows that improved well productivities are obtained when propping agents are incorporated in the treating fluid. Although propped fracture area has been recognized as an important design parameter, a method to distinguish between total area and effective fracture area has not been available. The necessary information on slurry-sand transport in fractures has been lacking. Interest in the propped region of induced fractures is not restricted to areal extent alone. The distribution of sand within fractures is important from the standpoint of fracture flow capacities. Flow capacity affects the increase in well productivity after stimulation. The work of Huitt and Darin4 hows that partial monolayers of sand have large flow capacities compared to thick* dense sand packs. It has been postulated that gelled fluids have the ability to transport sand within the fractures at the deired low concentrations. An early contribution in the area of sand placement in fractures was made by Kern et al.' They studied sand movement in a transparent vertical fracture model. It was observed that the sand tended to settle out in the bottom of the model before moving very far. When the fluid velocity exceeded a certain critical value, all of the sand injected began moving through the crack even though it settled to the bottom. This critical velocity was determined under several flow conditions. Some work on sand movement in horizontal fractures has been reported in Russian publications. Sand movement was studied by Izyumova and Shan'gin' using a transparent "pie-shaped" flow model to simulate a horizontal radial flow system. However, the data were limited, especially in a quantitative sense. Dorozhkin, Zheltov and Zheltow studied the behavior of sand-liquid slurries in a horizontal linear flow model. The quantitative data were restricted primarily to the thickness of sand deposits formed at the bottom of the fracture. An earlier paper provided basic data on the flow of sand in horizontal fractures. This study was designed to yield specific quantitative information on rate of advance of sand particles and pressure behavior under various flow conditions. A comprehensive photographic study was undertaken in a 10-ft windowed flow cell to provide the necessary qualitative and quantitative data. Since the number of potential variables far exceeded the capacity of the initial study, emphasis was placed on the effects of sand concentration, oil viscosity and oil flow rate. A detailed description of these experiments and the results are described in Ref. 9. However. the implications of this work on the fracture design calculations were not discussed. An analysis of these data as well as new data is provided in the following sections. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The primary objective of the experimental investigation was to provide information on the rate of advance of the solids in sand-liquid sturries. A 10%-ft long transparent

IN 1915, H. A. Guess, Vice President of American Smelting & Refining Co., in charge of its Mining Department, learned that the Anglo-New-foundland Development Co., Ltd., a pulpwood and paper-mill enterprise, had found upon its large concession in Newfoundland, and had opened up by shaft to the third level and some drifting, a lenticular orebody indicat-ing about 100,000 tons, as an extremely fine-grained sulfide ore, averaging about 0.05 oz. Au, 4 oz. Ag, 1.5 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Pb, 18 per cent Zn; and that having sent parcels of this ore to Minerals Separation, Ltd., and various other metallurgical testing concerns without obtaining any success in commercial separations thereon, had discontinued work thereon and let the workings fill. Mr. Guess wrote to the general manager of that company and obtained a few hundred pounds of the typical ore, which he sent to his company's metallurgical testing laboratory at Flat River, Mo., outlining various flotation tests desired thereon, in an endeavor to obtain separation into a commercial lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. But the art of flotation had not then progressed far enough to treat such ore, the galena and zinc blende being so fine grained that grinding to about 300 mesh was required to release the mineral particles in their gangue. Mr. Guess had flotation and other tests continued upon this ore from time to time with whatever new reagents and flotation devices were evolved as time went on, and finally, in 1925, he succeeded in effecting in his company's testing plant, then at Wallace, Idaho, separations into lead concentrates and zinc concentrates of satisfactory commercial grade. Mr. Guess then proceeded to unwater, examine and sample the property and made with the owners a partnership operating agreement upon the mine itself and a considerable area surrounding it, and in the early summer of 1926 began to prospect for additional orebodies, utilizing for such prospecting geophysical methods, under the direction of Hans Lundberg, methods which up to that time had been little used in mining in the western hemisphere.. This geophysical work found two large flat-lying orebodies of a type precisely similar to the smaller body of the original discovery. The larger orebody, some 3500 ft. west of the original

A prototype equipment has been designed and built for the digital recording of well logs on magnetic tape at the same time that the regular film recording is made. The format of the digital tape produced is such that it can be used directly at the input of the ZBM 704, 7090 or other models of ZBM computers which accept digital magnetic tape. This apparatus has been used for the experimental field recording of dipmeter tape logs which were subsequently computed by means of an ZBM 704 or 7090. In this paper the equipment and the digital tape are described briefly, and their application to the computer-interpretation of dipmeter data is discussed. A principal element in the interpretation of the dipmeter log is the correlation of the three microresirtivity dipmeter curves to determine the depth displacements between them. Several correlation methods for computer use are considered, with particular attention to their sensitivity to error and their consumption of computer time. The tape data were used to compute information content of the dipmeter microresistivity curves in terms of their frequency spectra. The results show that the sampling rate used in recording the digital information is quite adequate and illustrate a use of the digital tape in evaluating the characteristics of new tools. Some examples of field results are shown. It can be foreseen that, when digital tape recording becomes available for general field use, a whole new realm of possibilities will be opened up for the processing of other well logs through computations, which hitherto were not feasible because they were too laborious and time-con.sunzing. INTRODUCTION The last few years have seen a revolution in the design and production of data-processing equipment. Stored-pro-gram digital computers have progressed from a research curiosity to the basis of a major industry. There are now hundreds of such machines in daily use in the United States. With the acceptance of a technique that was, in fact, already clearly described by John von Neumann in 1945, the last decade has seen great strides in the development'of components, reliability, programming systems and, most spectacularly, in the sheer number of machines built and in use. In 1957 there were enough digital computers available to the oil industry to justify the suggestion that it would be worthwhile to investigate the possibility of using these machines in processing well log data.' The first result of this investigation was the appearance of what may be referred to as the input-output bottleneck. Well logs are customarily recorded on film. To get these data into a machine required then (and still does): a time-consuming semi-automatic reading of the film; conversion of the log data to digital form; and recording these digital data in some medium acceptable for computer input, such as cards, magnetic tape, or punched paper tape. However, the recording, reading, and re-recording could only result in deterioration of the data. Therefore, it was concluded that the fist step should be the development of a new, more direct recording technique supplemental to the film recording, which would provide easy access to the digital computer. There are many solutions to the problem of recording log data in an easily recoverable form. After careful consideration it was decided to adopt the boldest solution which, it was felt, was also the most elegant. It was decided to record well logs directly, in the field, on magnetic tape in such a way that this tape could be used without further modification as an input to the IBM 704 or 7090 computer. To realize practical field recording of magnetic tape logs, it became necessary to develop in a rather small package, an analog-to-digital converter, a tape recorder, and the necessary multiplexing and control circuits to allow the simultaneous recording of a multiplicity of logging signals. The magnetic tape recording was to be made simultaneously with the conventional logging operation in such a way as not to interfere with it. Along with the development of hardware, it was necessary to begin development of interpretation techniques and machine programs that would exploit the power of the digital computer. Here, again, there is a long list of possible applications. After much consideration it was decided to concentrate on the interpretation of the dipmeter log as a first application. It is the object of this paper to describe in some detail the developments sketched in the last three paragraphs.

Measurements have been made of the variation of internal friction with temperature for spectroscopically pure silver, and for o series of solid solutions of silver with cadmium, indium, and tin, using a Ke-type torsion pendulum apparatus. Some experiments have also been made to investigate the effect of nonmetallic impurity on grain boundary relaxation in silver. The effect of the alloying elements is to increase the grain boundary viscosity, and to raise the activation energy for grain boundary relaxation from 22,000 cal per mol for pure silver to 43,000 cal per mol for the solid solutions; the same value being obtained, within the limits of experimental error, for all the alloying elements and solute concentrations investigated. Results of the experiments show exactly the same trend as those obtained previously for a similar series of copper solid solutions. They are in agreement with the general theory of grain boundary relaxation developed by Zener and Ke, but do not seem to be in agreement with either of the mechanisms so far put forward to explain grain boundary slip. EXPERIMENTS described in this paper were made as part of an investigation into the effect of alloying elements in substitutional solid solution on grain boundary viscosity, measured by the internal friction method developed by Ke.&apos; The apparatus and experimental procedure have already been described.&apos; Preliminary work was done with spectro-scopically pure silver. Experimental Work Materials Used—All the materials were supplied in the form of % mm diam wire by Messrs. Johnson Matthey and Co. Ltd. The silver and all the alloying elements used were spectroscopically pure. Composition of the alloys is given in Table I. They were all melted and chill cast under the same conditions as the copper alloys. The ingots were rolled to 1/4 in. sq rod with intermediate annealing at 600°C in an atmosphere of cracked ammonia when necessary. These rods were then drawn to wire by standard procedure with intermediate bright anneals at suitable steps in the drawing operations. Specimens from the annealed wires were sectioned longitudinally. mechanically polished, and examined under the microscope. They were then etched and reexamined. Grain sizes were reasonably uniform for all wires, and no traces of a second constituent were observed. The wires were weighed before and after testing so as to measure any loss of the alloying element due to evaporation. The loss was less than the accuracy of measurement—< 0.1 pct of the total weight— for the Ag-In and Ag-Sn alloys, but appreciable loss of weight occurred in the case of the Ag-Cd alloys. The percentage loss is given in Table 11. X-ray diffraction photographs were taken of all thc wires after test to determine whether there was any marked preferred orientation. Results of the examination are given in Table 111. Experiments on Spectroscopically Pure Silver-— Experiments were made on specimens in which the grain diameter was small relative to that of the wire, and on one specimen in which the grains were grown by the usual strain-anneal method to extend across the full diameter of the wire. These large grained specimens will be referred to as single crystal specimens. The wires were annealed for 11/2 hr at 700°C, and experiments were made at two frequencies of vibration, 1.5 and 0.4 vibrations per sec. The variation of internal friction with temperature is shown in Fig. 1. Experiments on a second small grain specimen gave approximately the same results as for the first wire. IN accordance with the custom of this society, we are gathered here, as we have every year since 1924, to honor the memory of the eminent American metallurgist and teacher, Professor Henry Marion Howe. Unlike many of the distinguished metallurgists who have preceded me as a Howe lecturer, I cannot bring to you reminiscences of his personality, for it was not my privilege to be associated with Professor Howe, or to be directly one of his students. Yet, Professor Howe and Professor Albert Sauveur, through the medium of their books, were my first teachers of metallography, as they have been of almost all American metallurgists of my generation. As a teacher, and for many years the acknowledged leader of American metallurgists, he exercised a profound influence in the growth of our science and was held in honor by the men of science of his time. I can speak no words of technical appreciation that will add luster to his fame, for by his prophetic vision, his teachings, and his researches he stands among the immortals in the memory of all metallurgists. In 1926, the third Howe Memorial Lecture was presented by Professor William Campbell&apos; of Columbia University, who entitled it "Twenty-Five Years of Metallography." He took as a starting date for his chronology the turn of the century, which coincided with his arrival from England to work in association with Howe at the Columbia School of Mines. In that informative lecture Professor Campbell enumerated the important advances in metallography achieved during the first quarter of the century, and, it now appears, may have established the custom of reviewing such progress every twenty-five years. The scope of Professor Campbell&apos;s lecture was as broad as his metallurgical knowledge, for it embraced a wide portion of the field of metallography, both ferrous and nonferrous. Twenty-five years later, the Howe Memorial Lecture Committee saw fit to assign to me the honor of writing a lecture that would commemorate the work of Henry Marion Howe and would at the same time constitute the 25th anniversary of the lecture by Professor Campbell. The Committee suggested that this lecture might properly be called "Twenty-Five More Years of Metallography," a suggestion that I have adopted. I must confess, however, that I have not followed the precedent established by Campbell and have narrowed the scope of this lecture to an appraisal of those achievements which in my opinion have contributed most to the progress of microscopical metallography during the past twenty-five years. Progress in Metallography The metallographic methods most widely used today, with the exception of the electron microscope, were firmly established more than twenty-five years ago. In general, our specimens were prepared for microscopic examination in those days in much the same manner as they are today. It is true that new details of technique have been introduced from time to time, and that superior equipment is available today, but on the whole, these improvements have been in the nature of refinements, often a matter of personal preference, and none can be considered essential to the attainment of the ultimate goal of the art and science of metallography, which is to reveal the structure of metallic specimens with unequivocal clarity so that they may be interpreted correctly. Mechanical metallographic polishing, which was the only method available in 1926, is still universally practiced and still consists of abrading the metallic specimen with a series of abrasives of increasing fineness until a specular surface is attained. We have now the alternative method of electropolishing, but it is not widely used because, except in a few special cases, its results are inferior to those of competent mechanical polishing. Likewise, most of the etching reagents preferred today were in common use more than twenty-five years ago and were applied in the same manner as they are today. Valuable improvements have been made in the optical and mechanical performance of metallurgical microscopes, but there was no dearth in those days of excellent instruments equipped with achromatic and apochromatic objectives capable of yielding micrographs comparable in quality with the best that we can make today. In fact, it would be a difficult task for any metallographer today to make optical micrographs at magnifications in excess of 3000 diameters that would surpass those made by Lucas more than twenty-five years ago. One of these is shown in Fig. 1. Yet, it is unquestionable that on the whole, the micrographs appearing in the metallurgical literature today are vastly superior to those

IN the decade beginning 1850, the development by William Kelly in I the U.S.A. and Henry Bessemer in England of the pneumatic method of refining pig iron, known as the Bessemer process, gave the world the first method of producing low-cost steel in large volumes. Briefly, the Bessemer process consists of blowing air through liquid blast furnace iron in a refractory-lined vessel known as a converter. The air enters the iron in the furnace bottom through tuyeres, and during its passage through the iron removes the carbon, manganese, and silicon by oxidation. The heat produced by oxidation is sufficient to raise the temperature of the liquid metal to normal steel casting temperatures and, in addition, to melt some scrap. In the 1860&apos;s, the open hearth process was introduced which in the early part of the twentieth century surpassed the Bessemer process in steel production. In the early 1870&apos;s, Thomas and Gilchrist discovered that phosphorus could also be removed if lime were added and the converter lined with basic refractory; the modification is known as the basic Bessemer process and is used in Europe. Bessemer steel usually contains between 0.010 and 0.020 per cent nitrogen and between 0.05 and 0.10 per cent phosphorus which influences the properties. Henry Bessemer,1 in 1856, recognized the possibility of using oxygen in the converter process, but the cost was prohibitive. This interest was associated with the theoretical balance of the Bessemer process. Experimental work&apos; has indicated that bottom blowing with pure oxygen results in serious converter bottom and tuyere erosion. Dilution of the oxygen by steam has been observed to be an effective means of maintaining low-nitrogen content of the steel and at the same time reducing bottom and tuyere erosion. A further advantage is that the fume emission characteristic of Bessmer operation is reduced. The addition of steam to the oxygen, however, reduces scrap-melting capacity due to the endothermic reaction characteristics of steam. The possible advantages of refining methods for steel using high-purity oxygen have been recognized for over a hundred years, but the develop-

Assuming that rock behavior, during cutting with a single diamond, may be approximated by that of a rigid, Coulomb, plastic material, a theory of single diamond cutting action has been developed. Using this theory, the stresses on the diamond cutting surface and the components of the cutting force have been determined. Theoretical results agree reasonably well with available experimental data. The theory of cutting of single diamonds may be used as the basis for subsequent study of the perfonnance of surface set diamond drill bits and other surface set diamond cutting tools. INTRODUCTION For more than twenty years, surface set diamond bits have been used successfully in the mining and petroleum industries to drill and core rock formations that range from medium hard to the hardest known formations. Most extremely hard rock formations cannot be economically drilled or cored by any other means. In view of the growing use and importance of surface set diamond drill bits, it is reasonable to study the way in which these tools cut, and the factors that influence wear of the diamonds. Such knowledge will contribute to better bit design and will improve operating procedures. To analyze the cutting performance of these tools it is appropriate to consider the way in which an individual diamond cuts. Once this is established, the over-all performance of the bits can be determined by considering the total effect of the individual diamonds. In recent years there has been a growing interest in rock mechanics and there now exist several publications dealing with the deformation and failure of rocks. Notable experimental work has been reported by Bredthauer,1 Handin and Hager,2, 3 and Gnirk and Cheatham.4 An extensive collection of data pertaining to rock properties at low confining pressures has been given by Wuerker.5 Cheatham and Gnirk have recently presented an excellent review of the state of knowledge regarding analytical and experimental rock deformation and failure.6 Generally rocks are extremely weak in uniaxial tension, and weak or only moderately strong in uniaxial compression. Both tensile failure and compressive failure are generally brittle in nature. This means that there is little or no deformation or "flow" of the material before shear or tensile fracture occurs. Thus, until fracture occurs, rock behaves very nearly like an elastic material in uniaxial stress. Significant changes in behavior of rock occur under conditions of triaxial compressive stress. There is generally a marked increase in compressive strength and in ductility. It has been demonstrated that the failure becomes plastic (in a macroscopic sense) at sufficiently high values of confining pressure. Sharp wedge chisel indentation studies conducted by Gnirk and Cheatham indicate that many rocks behave in a plastic manner at relatively low triaxial compressive stress states.4 If "failure" under triaxial compressive conditions is considered to be either complete rupture or macroscopic plastic flow, then the general failure characteristics of a rock can be reasonably well represented by the commonly known Mohr envelope. This certainly is not a perfect failure criterion (since the effect of the intermediate principal stress is neglected) but it has been found to be adequate for most engineering purposes. Mohr envelopes usually are constructed graphically using experimental triaxial test data. For purposes of analysis it is convenient to represent the envelope in equation form. Among the several approximate forms appearing in the literature, a parabolic form is suggested by Cheatham,7 and an exponential form is suggested by Paone and Tandanand.8 The exponential form has been adopted for this study, and based on published data, appropriate parameters have been established for 19 rock types.
