IN a recent study1 of the deformation of metastable beta copper-zinc and beta copper-tin crystals, it was established that the parallel markings that appear on the surface of these crystals after slight deformation represent lattice transformations. Stereographic analysis showed that in beta copper-tin, the poles of these markings deviated one or two degrees from poles of the form 1133). In beta copper-zinc the plane delineated by the markings corresponded to no one crystallographic plane of the matrix lattice; the marking poles deviated from 5° to 11° from poles of the form {110}, and were displaced only a few degrees from (110) zones. Inasmuch as the new transition lattices produced as the result of the deformation are different for each alloy, it was thought at first that the habits of the markings might be the result of a cooperation between matrix lattice and transformed lattice. (Both matrix lattices are body-centered cubic.) Such a cooperative effect is thought to obtain in the formation of Widmanstätten figures, for it is well known that the matrix lattice alone does not determine the habit assumed by a segregate phase. On the other hand, it is not inconceivable that the dissimilarity in marking habit might be due to differences in deformation characteristics of beta brass and beta bronze. Barrett and co-workers2 have shown that slip-line habits in pure iron are markedly different from those in high-silicon ferrite; and although it has been repeatedly demonstrated that plates of a segregate phase do not necessarily form on the slip planes of the matrix lattice, deformation characteristics may be more intimately allied with plate formation when a transformation is made to occur as a result of plastic deformation. However, there is the fact that the orientation of markings in metastable beta copper-zinc is the same whether the markings be produced by quenching, deformation, or liquid-air cooling; likewise, quenching and deformation markings in metastable beta copper-tin are oriented in the same way with respect to the beta matrix. The experiments described in this publication were inspired by the Bell System's large interest in lead-alloy sheathed cables and by the wide range of fatigue and corroding conditions to which they are sometimes subjected in service. The first experiments consisted of operating specimens of lead + I per cent antimony telephone cable sheath alloy in a fatigue test while they were immersed in water taken from a manhole. Because of many published reports concerning corrosion-fatigue phenomena of various metals and alloys, a reduction in fatigue life was expected(1)2 Instead, however, the fatigue test ran on for many times the normal number of cycles an4 was finally stopped without failure. The following propositions and corollaries are intended to present, as concisely as possible, some of the evidences gathered while studying the microstructure of steel. Each proposition is accompanied by photo-micrographs showing the structure of illustrative samples. But it must be understood that the special instances thus chosen for illustration are by no means the only ones on the examination of which the propositions are based. On the contrary, they have been taken almost at random among a great many, in some instances more than a hundred, similar cases. Proposition I. A slow and undisturbed cooling from a temperature x or higher produces crystallization. Plate L, Plate II., Fig. 1, and Plate V., Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 show the crystalline structure of several pieces of steel. Plate I. reveals this structure in the center of a slowly-cooled Bessemer ingot, 1.5 feet from the top. Plate II., Pig. 1, is from a small 2-in, square testingot of the same heat, slowly cooled. Plate V., Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 show the structure of different parts of steel rails. The original photographs were all magnified 70 diameters, and have been reduced in engraving to 63, or to 55 diameters, as shown in the plates. Proposition 11. Undisturbed cooling from an initial temperature lower than x is not accompanied by crystallization. Plate III., Fig. 5, shows the structure of a piece of rail-steel forged from a white heat until it had fallen to dull-red. The structure is almost amorphous. Practically no crystallization has taken place during the subsequent cooling. Corollary.—Pieces of steel finished at a temperature lower than x do not take a crystalline structure.

In order to improve the understanding of the iron oxide reduction mechanism, the rate of equal molar diffusion of hydrogen and water vapor was measured through disks of porous iron and alumina. The measuretneizts were made at atmospheric pressure at 800°, 900- , and 1000°C. It is shown tint the reduction of dense hematite pellets with hydrogen at these temperatures and at atmospheric pressure is to a great extent limited by gaseous diffusion between the bulk-gas phase and the iron-wustile interface. THE investigation of the reduction of iron oxides with hydrogen has been the subject of numerous papers. Although the effects of temperature, pressure, and gas composition on the rate of iron oxide reduction have been studied, the actual mechanism of the reduction process has not been definitely determined. As a means of improving the understanding of the mechanism, the rate of equal molar counterdiffusion of hydrogen and water vapor was measured through porous iron and porous alumina disks at reduction temperatures. The alumina was used as a basis of compari-son because its pore structure is homogeneous and independent of temperature. The porous iron was prepared by the reduction of dense hematite disks with hydrogen at the temperature of the subsequent diffusion experiment. The hematite disks were made from pellets that were identical to those used by McKewan1,2 in his study of iron oxide reduction with hydrogen. In these investigations the weight loss and rate of movement of the various interfaces were measured as a function of the reduction temperature and gas composition. With these reduction data and the presently reported diffusion data it is possible to determine the importance of H2-H2O transport between the bulk-gas phase and the Fe/FeO interface to the reduction of dense hematite. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE A porous iron or alumina sample was held in the base plate of a sealed canister containing porous granular wustite, as illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. The canister was suspended from an automatic recording balance in a vertical tube furnace through which flowed hydrogen and water-vapor mixtures of known composition at atmospheric pressure (0.96 atm). Hydrogen from the gas stream diffused through the porous sample, reducing the wustite in the interior of the canister. The water vapor that was formed diffused back to the gas stream. The rate of diffusion was determined from the recorded weightloss data. The furnace, automatic balance, and gas-metering equipment have been described previously.2 The main body of the canister and the tubing extension were made of stainless steel while the base plate was made of high-purity iron. The main body of the canister was % in. in diam. It held approximately 6 g of porous granular wustite that was prepared by reducing 0.1- to 0.2-cm-diam specular hematite particles at 900°C with an H2-H2O mixture of a composition near the iron-wustite equilibrium value. The upper end of the 1/8-in.-diam tubing extension was sealed with a segment of plastic tubing and a tubing clamp. The temperature at the top of the furnace was sufficiently high so that no water vapor condensed inside the extension. In the experiments with porous iron, iron oxide samples were prepared from reagent-grade hematite that was pressed and sintered in a manner previously described.' IN THE preparation of this paper the writer has been influenced by the fact that descriptions of various means of cleaning blast-furnace gas have been published and that further descriptive treatment of the subject will probably be less interesting than a statement of conclusions with regard to preferable methods which have been reached by him as a result, of experience and observation in this country and also as a result of somewhat detailed investigation of the subject made toward the end of the year 1927 on the Continent of Europe and particularly in. Germany. Owing to various circumstances, including a cost of fuel that is extremely high in relation to the wages of labor, the German iron and steel industry has accumulated experience in gas washing which is as yet in part lacking in the United States of America. The paper begins with a statement regarding the economics of the use of blast-furnace gas, then considers the principle's and practices employed in its purification. USES OF BLAST-FURNACE GAS For many reasons having to do with the utilization of coke-oven and blast-furnace gases in steel manufacture and with the use of hot metal, the blast furnace is now usually a part of a steel-producing unit, which also includes coke plant and rolling mill. Therefore both blast-furnace and coke-oven gas are usually applicable to any of the iron and steel-making processes, including the generation of power, and their allocation in any given works should be considered as a single problem. The uses to which blast-furnace gas, either alone or mixed with coke-oven gas may be put, include the following: Regenerative Heating of Air for the Blast Furnace.-This is the oldest and metallurgically the most important of all uses. It is universally performed with unmixed blast-furnace gas and under proper conditions should require not over 23.5 per cent. of the total gas generated for a blast temperature of 1350° F. For Steam-raising Purposes.-This is almost universally done with unmixed blast-furnace gas. From the standpoint of quantity used, it is at the present time the most important application in American steel-works practice.

DURING the heating of cold-worked nickel silver, the tendency of the material to crack is well known. The present research deals with this question, and may conveniently be divided into the following sections: Changes in these alloys during heating and cooling, determination of the temperature at which cracking occurs, effect of grain size, quenching cracks, methods of overcoming annealing cracking. The work is far from complete, in particular the influence of impurities on this tendency has not been investigated, but the results so far obtained lead to certain definite conclusions, which are of theoretical and practical importance. CHANGES IN ALLOYS DURING HEATING AND COOLING During the annealing of many metals at a temperature just below that at which recrystallization sets in, there is evidence of some change, the effect of which is to harden and embrittle the material. This effect has been most clearly demonstrated in the cases of aluminum, copper, brass, and nickel silver, and appears to be a common property of cold-worked metals and alloys, or, at any rate, the non-ferrous ones. The effect would obviously offer an explanation for certain types of annealing cracking, but the trouble is so much more common in the nickel silvers than in the other alloys that some special cause should be looked for. There is, however, fairly good reason for believing that similar cracking may occur in some of the brasses; D. Bunting suggests that the a brasses toward the saturation limit are subject to a transformation closely allied in nature to that known to occur in the nickel silvers at around 320° C. Although the existence of this critical temperature range was known, it did not necessarily follow that this transformation was responsible for the trouble under investigation, so the first portion of this paper deals with the attempts made to determine whether other critical changes might not occur in these alloys. The Fresnillo unit of the Mexican Corporation, S. A., is situated at the old historic mining town of Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico, 33 miles north of the city of Zacatecas and 750 miles south of El Paso, Tex. It is connected with the Mexican Central Railroad by a broad-gage spur 5.5 miles long, belonging to the company. Fresnillo is surrounded by a broad semi-arid valley on the Mexican plateau at an elevation of 7300 ft. The monotony of the valley is broken by a number of low hills. Near the town of Fresnillo is the " Cerro de Proano," an elliptic-shaped hill of gentle slope, rising out of the plain to a height of 325 ft.; the base has a major axis of 4500ft. and a minor axis of 3000 ft. In this hill is the silver-bearing mineralized zone, which comprises past and present mining operations. (In this paper money values are expressed throughout in American currency and the dry short ton of 2000 lb. is used.) The discovery of ore at Fresnillo is credited to the Spaniards, soon after the conquest of Mexico. There are, however, no authentic records to show the amount of work done by them. In 1832, the State of Zacatecas took possession of the property and operated it. Evidently the rich ore above the horizon of the plain had been fairly well exhausted, as an old record states that thirty shafts were used for unwatering, requiring 300 men and 1500 animals. The cost of pumping alone amounted to $150,000 a year. In spite of the fact that cheap convict labor was used, mining costs were reported as $20 and treatment charges as $20 per ton. In 1835, the state was obliged to seek foreign capital, and a company formed in London secured a controlling interest in the property. This new organization sank two shafts, one 11 by 19 ft. and the other 10 by 15 ft., to unwater the mines and extract ore. Large Cornish pumps were purchased in England and hauled overland from Vera Cruz; engines also were installed to operate the arrastres (grinding mills) in the patio process of ore treatment. Substantial buildings were erected and operations were conducted on a large scale, for that period. The patio, the largest in Mexico, was 1150 ft. square. The costs for 1850 were:

(communication to the Secretary*). -Apropos of the experimental reduction of copper from cuprous chloride by fusion with ground limestone and coke, as described by Messrs. Laist and Frick, and also proposed for use at Chuquicamata., it might be of interest to refer briefly to the experience at Argentine, Kan., in the smelting of the suboxide of copper (as produced in the Hunt and Douglas process) containing appreciable quantities of chlorides. In the Engineering and Mining Journal of June 10, 1911, I. gave some account of what had appeared to be crucial difficulties with the Hunt and Douglas process, and how the filter-press difficulty had been so rapidly overcome after my discovery of the effect of the sodium salts in the leaching solutions. I also described the effect of the cupola furnace gases upon the lime rock with which I had replaced the coke in the absorption tower, which apparently showed the presence of considerable-chlorine, clue to the imperfect conversion of the subchloride to suboxide, as well as that clue to the difficulties of washing thoroughly the suboxide with the means provided, and also to the presence of chlorides in the cement copper which was smelted With the suboxide. The fumes from the cupola, when issuing direct into the atmosphere, were very dense and white, except when a hot furnace top caused a reddish tinge due to dust. These, fumes had a peculiarly suffocating effect, so that when they were blown over into the town the population suffered the greatest actual distress, not the mere annoyance which would have been clue to a disagreeable odor. The absorption tower had been built at the instance of the city authorities to abate this nuisance, and not with the idea of making any additional metal savings. A serious feature in connection with the Argentine experience with the Hunt and Douglas process was, that it had been implicitly assumed that there could be no metal loss in the Hunt and Douglas process itself, and that all attempts to locate the ruinous copper losses which were accumulating in the metallurgical accounts were devoted to the roasting department. It is possibly unfortunate for metallurgical advance along these particular lines that just about the time of this discovery of this previously unsuspected volatilization loss, in the smelting of the suboxide, the Kansas City company made a contract with the Western Union Telegraph Co. for its supply of copper sulphate and the Hunt and Douglas

Shortly after the middle of the nineteenth century, the invention of the regenerative open-hearth furnace and the development of the Bessemer process stimulated a rate of steel production whose magnitude created an unprecedented demand for pig iron. Revolutionary improvements in furnace design, auxiliary equipment, and operating technique enabled the blast furnace to keep abreast of the constantly increasing requirements of the steel mill. The development of improved blowing equipment, more adequate facilities for material handling, and particularly the general use of anthracitc and coke to replace the physically weaker charcoal, led to a rapid expansion in both the height and volume of furnaces. Beyond a doubt, however, the greatest single factor in blast-furnace improvement at this time was the use of the higher blast temperatures made available by the replacement of the recuperative iron pipe stoves by the regenerative Cowper brick stove. The increased blast temperature not only resulted in greater output but also reduced fuel consumption . far more than could be explained by the additional heat content of the blast. The progress of iron manufacturing was thus largely mechanical and thermal. Little attention was given the chemistry of the process until the publication of the investigations of Sir Lowthian Bell.1 Bell's painstaking experiments and investigations gave to the blast-furnace man his first real scientific conception of blast-furnace chemistry. Bell's recognition of the dual function of the carbon, the technical importance of reversible reactions and chemical equilibria, and his conception of the degree of oxidation of the carbon as shown by the analysis of the outgoing gases as a criterion of furnace efficiency, laid the foundation upon which has since been erected the structure of blast-furnace theory. Prominent among those availing themselves of Bell's data as .a basis of further study was M. L. Gruner,2 professor of the French School of Mines. His "Blast Furnace Phenomena," published in 1870, presented

THE copper mines of the Katanga region in the Belgian Congo lie along the same mineralized belt as those of Northern Rhodesia. There are two distinct types of deposits in that belt, the dolomitic and the quartzitic. In the dolomitic type the metallic minerals are found in a dolomitic limestone country rock. Through oxidation and enrichment, large deposits of high-grade oxidized copper ores were formed, some of which are being worked by the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga. Such deposits are all in Katanga. The quartzitic deposits are found in Katanga and Northern Rhodesia. Here the primary mineralization occurred in sandstones and quartzites, in horizons stratigraphically lower than the dolomites. These rocks are not favorable to secondary enrichment and the oxidized zone is poorer than the sulphide zone, which alone contains the ore. There are also in Katanga a few ore-bearing veins. One of them is being worked in the Prince Leopold mine at Kipushi.

Attention has been given to the sources and supply of the raw vegetal matter and the conditions of its submission to the process of sedimentation. An original and most valuable review has been made of the more important or significant chemical compounds originally contained in the organic dct,ris, and of the biochemical changes undergone by the latter during deposition. Consideration also has been given to the factors controlling the selective biochemical decomposition, in whole or in part, of this debris, and the deposition, as sediments, of the undecom-posed plant structures and compounds, together with more or less of the so-called "ulmic," or "humic," organic decomposition products in colloidal so1ution. Biochemical Changes End in Peat Formation The biochemical process terminates in the peat stage of coal formation, and with the cessation of this process organic sedimentation is completed. All subsequent changes result from geological causes and conditions. The deposits are in the form of peats of different types, organic muds, oozes, etc. They are essentially uncompressed and are wholly uncon-solidated, and their water content is great, amounting to over 85 per cent, near the surface of the deposit. Many of the chemical compounds remain as in the once living organisms; others are biochemically broken down and new ones formed. Geochemical and Geophysical Changes in Buried Deposits Subsequent Changes " Dynamochemical" The changes which subsequently take place through dehydration, lithification, and simultaneous progressive chemical alteration, by which organic sediments are advanced to brown lignite, subbituminous, bituminous, semianthracitic, and graphitic ranks, are geochemical and geophysical, and the process, which really is metamorphic,2 takes place under dynamic influences. DURING the past twelve months the Loudon pool of the Eastern Interior Coal Basin has become established as one of the two largest discoveries since the revival of exploitation in the Illinois region and now occupies a position among the important pools of the United States. On Aug. 1, 1939, production averaged 54,000 bbl. per day from 990 wells, having accumulated a total of 10,305,000 bbl. Its very active develop-ment promises to continue for fully another year. It is the site of one of the industry's most singular large-scale gas-injection programs. LOCATION AND RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS At present the pool embraces an area 15 miles long by 3 ½ miles wide in eastern Fayette County, along the western rim of the now well-known Illinois Basin's deeper part, through townships 6, 7 and 8 north and ranges 2 and 3 east of the Third Meridian. It is the northernmost, and most prominent, productive structure of a group extending over a 50-mile trend southward to the Dix pool of Jefferson County. Three horizons have been proved to carry production-namely, the Weiler sandstone at 1390 ft., the Paint Creek sand at 1460 ft. and the Benoist or Bethel, at 1500 ft. Geologically, they fall in the Chester series of the upper Mississippian system, where much of Illinois' early-day oil was found, having been laid down in shallow off-shore waters as a part of the vast delta deposit underlying central Illinois and parts of Indiana and Kentucky. As a result of this type of sedimentation, followed by repeated uplifts and warping along an anticlinal axis, differ-ential deposition of sands and shales contributing to great irregularity took place. This is further reflected by wide variations in permeability, porosity and thickness of all the sands and, accordingly, in the producing characteristics of wells. Permeabilities range as high as 550 millidarcies, with the average commonly lying between 60 and 100. For the three pay horizons the mean porosity is 18 per cent, at a calculated water saturation of roughly 30 per cent. The Weiler sand has an average thickness of 25 ft., the Benoist of about 23 ft. and the Paint Creek of approximately 18 ft. Of these three productive formations the Benoist

THE binary system lead-antimony has been the subject of compre-hensive investigations in these laboratories by Dean1 and his associates. The effect of a third constituent on this system, particularly on the lead-rich alloys in which dispersion hardening ,was found, has a commercial value as well as an academic interest. This paper covers the effect of the addition of copper, bismuth and tin, all of which are likely to be found in commercial lead-antimony alloys, and is divided into three parts, as follows: I. The System Lead-Antimony-Copper II. The System Lead-Antimony-Bismuth III. The Lead Corner of the System Lead-Antimony-Tin These three systems are of three different types, and hence may be considered as covering three general kinds of additions. Bismuth forms no compounds with either lead or antimony and forms solid solutions with both. Copper forms several compounds with antimony as well as solid solutions but with lead it forms a two liquid layer system and no appreciable solid solution. Tin is soluble in both lead and antimony in the solid state and also forms a compound with antimony. The effect of small amounts of bismuth on the lead-antimony alloys is small, having no appreciable effect on the solubility of antimony. The temperature of the solidus floor is lowered appreciably by the presence of bismuth, cutting down the range of heat treatment. Copper, on the other hand, due to compound formation, increases the apparent solubility of antimony. The excess antimony is tied up with the copper finally and so is not available for dispersion hardening. The microstructure of dispersion-strengthened aluminum aluminum-oxide products containing from 0.2 to 4.7 wt pct of aluminum oxide has been examined by optical and transmission electron microscopy, and the flow stress has been determined at room temperature and at 400C by tensile testing. Products were examined as recrystallized and as high-temperature extruded, and the microstructures consisted of a fine dispersion of oxide particles in a matrix divided by respectively recrystallized grain boundaries and subgrain boundaries. The flow stress (0.2 pct offset) at room temperature of recrystallized dispersion strengthened aluminum aluminum-oxide products is the superposition of dispersion strengthening and grain boundary strengthening. This superposition has been found to be linear. The flow stress (a) can be related to the grain size (t) by the Petch equation: ing content of oxide and k is a constant independent of the oxide content. For extruded products a similar relation has been found by replacing the grain size by the subgrain size. The k-value is of the same order for the two types of structure, which shows that the subgrain boundaries are as effective slip barriers as grain boundaries. Tensile testing at 400C of re-crystallized and extruded products shows that oxide dispersion strengthening is very effective, whereas the strengthening effect of grain boundaries and subgrain boundaries is small. THE microstructure of dispersion-strengthened products consists of hard particles finely distributed in a metal matrix. The strengthening effect of the dispersed phase has been fairly well established,1 and it has been found that the size and volume fractions of the dispersed particles are important structural parameters. However, in many dispersion-strengthened products which have been worked and heat-treated during manufacture the matrix is divided into well-defined grains or sub-grains, which may also have a strengthening effect. A model of the matrix strengthening in dispersed products worked during manufacture has been proposed,2 introducing the energy of the structure as a strengthening factor, especially at low temperatures. A difficulty in this model is, however, to relate this (stored) energy to the structural parameters directly observable as for instance grain size. The strengthening effect of the matrix grain size after recrystallization has been in- vestigated for nickel-thoria (TD-Nickel) products3 and for copper aluminum-oxide products. Conclusive results were, however, not obtained as the grain size of TD-nickel was constant. 5 to II , after recrystallization at temperatures from 700 to 1200°C and as the copper products containing 5 to 1 wt pct of aluminum oxide could not be recrystallized even after severe cold reduction and heat treatment at 1050C. For aluminum aluminum-oxide products containing from 1 to 5 wt pct of aluminum oxide it has been shown that the tensile strength at room temperature decreases when an extruded product is cold-worked and recrystallized. The matrix in the extruded products is divided into well-defined subgrains of micron size, and as the grain size of the recrystallized products is about two orders of magnitude higher, it is obvious that grain boundary strengthening occurs. Preliminary results8 have indicated that the flow stress containing no grain boundaries, A is a constant and t is the subgrain size. At elevated temperatures the effect of boundaries is more complex; it has been shown11 that recrystallized products having an oxide content of about 3 wt pct are more creep resistant than extruded material in the temperature range 400° to 600°C, whereas on application of a higher strain rate the tensile flow stress (0.2 pct offset) is higher in extruded than in recrystallized aluminum—5 wt pct aluminum oxide products at temperatures from room temperature to 427°C (800), Finally it has been shown12 that the Brinell hardness at 350°C of extruded products having about the same content of aluminum oxide increases with decreasing grain size, determined by X-ray line-width measurements. The present study was undertaken to obtain a quantitative relationship between the tensile strength and the grain size of aluminum aluminum-oxide products in the recrystallized as well as in the extruded state. The tensile testing was performed at room temperature and at 400uC. The grain size of the recrystallized products was varied by changing the degree of cold-work preceding the recrystallization heat treatment. In extruded products grain (or subgrain) size variations were obtained by high-temperature heat treatment after extrusion. EXPERIMENTAL a) Materials. Among the notable deposits of iron-ore, the Iron Mountain at Durango, Mexico, is prominent. But, although it has been noticed in records of travel and official reports for three centuries, the statements made concerning it have been so largely alloyed with improbabilities that general credence has not been given to data relating to the Cerro & Mercado, that being the name by which this remarkable mountain of ore is known. Location. Geographically, the mountain is centrally located, being situated immediately at the City of Durango, which is distant in direct lines (as the crow flies) as follows: From the Rio Grande River at El Paso, Texas, in the north, 510 miles; from the same stream at Laredo, Texas, in the northeast, 410 miles; from Tampico, in the east, 475 miles; from the City of Mexico in the southeast, 520 miles; from Mazatlan in the west, 110 miles. At El Paso, the standard-gauge Mexican Central Railroad, and at Laredo, the narrow-gauge Mexican National Railroad, enter Mexico. Tampico is a prominent Mexican port on the Gulf of Mexico, and Mazatlan occupies a similar position on the Gulf of California. Alloying studies were conducted on modifications of Cb-10W-1OHf (C-129) alloy as part of a cooperative alloy development effort between The Boeing Co. and the Wah Chang Corp. The purpose of these studies was to develop a fabricable, high- strength columbium alloy with superior melding properties. The initial investigations of alloy modifications were conducted using laboratory-melted button ingots. An alloy with the composition exhibited excellent veld ductility, elevated-ternpevature strength, and fabricability. The yttrium-modified alloy was desigrzated C-129Y and was selected for further developrnetzt. Three prodziction heats of C-129Y weve processed into sheet. Welding, forming, and tensile proper-lies are presented for this material. Tungsten-are welds of. C-129Y exhibited a minimum bend radius of 1/2T in the as-welded conditioti compared to 8T for C-129 alloy. An investigation was conducted on Disil coating of C-129Y and test data are presented on oxidation resistance and effects of re-entry environments. The excellent combination of strength, fabricability, weldability, and low transition temperature of C-129Y alloy offers potential design advantages for use of this alloy in structures of aerospace vehicles. It is atiticipated that C-129Y will rapidly supplant C-129 and similar alloys clue to the versatility provided by its impvoved welditzg properties. COLUMBIUM alloys with improved properties are required to achieve better performance and efficiency of radiation-cooled structures for re-entry vehicles and recoverable launch systems. Cooperative work by The Boeing Co. and the Wah Chang Corp. resulted in the development several years ago of C-129 alloy, a high-strength Cb-W-Hf alloy.' This alloy has received favorable consideration for many advanced designs of high-temperature structures due to its excellent combination of properties. However, this alloy exhibits low weld ductility unless given a high-temperature stress-relief treatment. For this reason the development effort was directed towards modification of the C-129 alloy composition (Cb-1OW-1OHf) to eliminate the need for post-weld heat treatment. This paper describes the successful development of an alloy meeting this requirement. This new alloy was designated C-129Y and has a nominal composition of EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloying Studies. Various Cb-W-Hf compositions were investigated using are-melted button ingots. These buttons were hot-forged using a protective glass coating and rolled into sheet specimens. Metal-lographic examination: tensile testing, and welding studies were conducted to evaluate properties of the experimental alloys. Sheet Fabrication. Three pilot production heats of C-129Y were fabricated into sheet to establish processing techniques and to determine sheet properties. The three heats consisted of 6-in.-diam ingots weighing from 140 to 250 lb. The ingots were prepared by electron-be am melting followed by vacuum-arc melting. The hafnium and yttrium additions were made during the are-melting operation by tack welding alloy strip additions to the Cb-W master-alloy electrode. The final ingots were machined into billets with samples of the machine turnings collected for chemical analysis. Ingot breakdown methods for the three heats are as follows: Ingot Ingot Heat Size Weiaht___Breakdown Method A 6 in. 250 lb Hot extrusion B 6 in. 140 lb Hot forging C 6 in. 250 lb Hot extrusion Sheet bars from the extrusion and forging operations were conditioned, recrystallized, and rolled into sheet. Initial rolling was conducted at elevated temperatures and final rolling was conducted at room temperature.

THE first plans were made in 1930 for the mining by open-pit methods of the low-grade disseminated ore body now known as the Morenci open pit. It was not until 1937, however, that final plans were completed and the decision reached to go ahead with the actual development. Many advances were made in open-pit mining equipment during that period of seven years, therefore the ways and means of attack actually used were very different from those originally contemplated. Diesel-operated bulldozers, big trucks, full-revolving electric shovels and electric churn drills constitute the major equipment finally purchased for this modern stripping operation. Neither the bulldozers nor the big trucks were considered in the early operating plans, for at that time bulldozers had not been used in mining operations and the trucks as yet were undesigned. The full-revolving shovel and the churn drills were not new developments in open-pit equipment, but both had undergone remarkable manufacturing transition, emerging far more efficient and far more dependable than their predecessors. Even the ordinary drilling steel had been fundamentally changed. It was now threaded so that the dulled cutting bits could be detached and replaced, thus eliminating the costly transportation of long bars to the drill shop for resharpening. The decision to use trucks in the preliminary stripping operations was based on the desirability of this type of transportation to economically prepare the pit for rail haulage, coupled with the success that the contractors had had with them on other big excavation jobs. There are at present no plans for the use of trucks beyond the preliminary work, inasmuch as rail haulage will give lower costs after roadbeds and benches are once established. For many years to come, both ore and waste haulage will be over favorable grades. The average length of ore haul between the pit and an assembly yard will be about two miles. From there the crushers will be 1 1/3 miles with a connecting track grade of 0.4 per cent. The upper ore benches of the pit will be reached from the yard by a series of four switchbacks over a ruling grade of 4.0 per cent compensated for curvature. Tracks to the dumps will be on 0.2 per cent grades.
