During the latter part of 1916 and the early months of 1917, due to war activities, there was a threatened shortage of coal which resulted in panic among consumers and a rush to obtain coal at once at any price. As a result of this insistent demand for immediate delivery, prices were bid up by the consumers to unprecedented heights; spot coal which had previously been selling at from $1.50 to $2 per ton was bid up to $5, $6, and, in exceptional cases, as high as $7.50 or more per ton. Then when the April, 1917, contract period arrived, contracts could be made only at prices ranging from $3 up to $5 and $6 per ton for the year's delivery. This condition caused such a demoralization of the business, and SO much complaint, that some action to regulate prices was considered essential by the National Administration. Lane-Peabody Agreement In May, 1917, a committee under the chairmanship of F. S. Peabody, of Chicago, was appointed by the Council of National Defense, through Mr. Lane, to consider the whole question of bituminous coal. This committee, with the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Lane, after numerous meetings and long negotiations with the operators throughout the country, announced on June 29 an agreement between the Committee and the producers, fixing a tentative maximum price for bituminous coal throughout the country at $3 per net ton f.o.b. mines, to which was added 25 c. for selling commission to wholesalers. This plan was based on the idea of fixing a maximum price, high enough to greatly stimulate production, with the expectation that the laws of supply and demand would, with ample production, operate to maintain fair and just prices for coal throughout the country.

There is nothing new about dragline dredging for placer gold. The use of the separate unit for excavating preceded the large barge with excavator mounted upon it, which has reached a high state of perfection through use in every part of the world. But at present there is a vogue for a small, inexpensive plant combining a dragline excavator on caterpillar mounting and a gravel-washing plant on a floating barge. The most efficient ones use a bucket of 1 to 2 yd. capacity with boom from 40 to 70 ft. long. The barge varies from 20 by 30 ft. to 36 by 48, and carries the trommel screen, pump, riffle sluices and power engine. Plants in Oboville District In the Oroville district eight such plants have been built since 1933, and have been operated with varying success. The most successful of these is the plant of the Wyandotte Gold Dredging Co. This organization of six active partners constructed its first plant on Wyandotte Creek in the autumn of 1933. To September of 1935 about one million cubic yards of gravel was dredged for an output of about $225,000 in gold. The operation has been successful from the beginning, because of wise management, which was based upon good plant design and proper principles of operation. All the partners have taken a more or less active part in the operation. Usually there is one at work on each shift, and they have conducted their own prospecting and building also. They elected H. F. England as manager, with wide power of control, and he carries out this responsibility energetically and successfully. One of the other plants, started shortly before the Wyandotte, finally abandoned its operation and sold its ground to the latter company, which successfully worked it for a profit. The failure of the other plant was due principally to poor excavating equipment. Another organization that built a plant some months later than the Wyandotte company had considerable difficulty in management and was unable to keep ahead of expenses. Finally, late last summer, it entered into an agreement with the Wyandotte company to have the latter supply

AN apparatus is described for the measurement of the pressure-volume-temperature relations of pure substances, simple mixtures and complex mixtures with an over-all absolute uncertainty, which is usually not more than 0.2 per cent. The equipment is suitable for studies in the gaseous, two-phase, and liquid regions. The behavior of such systems may be investigated at pressures as high as 10,000 lb. per sq. in. for temperatures between 70° and 600° F. The methods of measurement and the construction of the apparatus are described in some detail. The measurement of the volumetric behavior of multicomponent systems requires the simultaneous measurement of the pressure, volume, temperature and weight of each component of the system. In the present apparatus a sample having constant weight is investigated at a number of independently controlled pressures and temperatures, there-fore it is necessary only to establish the weight of each component added before a given set of measurements. This method is in distinction to that in which the total volume remains constant and the pressure is varied by addition or removal of material, the system having variable weight. An objective in the design of the apparatus to be described was to develop equipment that would yield results involving no uncertainties larger than 0.25 per cent throughout the range of pressures from 150 to 10,000 lb. per sq. in. at temperatures between 70° and 600° F. Although this over-all absolute uncertainty of measurement may not appear to be small, it necessitated care in the plans for control and measurement of each of the fundamental variables. In general, any uncertainty greater than 0.05 per cent in the pressure, volume, absolute temperature or weight of each component was considered undesirable; therefore the attempt was made to obtain a precision of measurement in each case such that the absolute uncertainty would be only half this amount except in certain regions near the ends of the experimental range of the variable under consideration.

Using the maximum bubble pressure technique, the densities of iron silicates at 1410°C have been measured blowing helium, nitrogen, and argon. By ensuring equilibrium between the melt and the blowing gas with respect to oxygen potential and by minimizing tempcrature cycling of the furnace, iron precipitation in the melt has been prevented. Thus the previously reported effect of blowing-gas composition on the densities of the melts has been eliminated. Consideration of the oxygen densities of the melts gives an indication of the structural changes accompanying composition change. The density-composition relationship of iron oxide-silica melts in contact with solid iron has been the subject of several investigations1-7 and considerable disparities exist among the various results obtained. Of these investigations, all except one5 have employed the maximum bubble pressure method. In the most recently reported of these investigations1 the density-composition relationship obtained blowing nitrogen differed from that obtained blowing argon. The measured densities obtained under nitrogen were greater than those obtained under argon, the difference being a maximum at the pure liquid iron oxide composition and decreasing with increasing silica content. This observation rationalized the disparities existing among the results of the earlier investigations, showing that two lines, one for nitrogen and the other for argon, could be drawn to fit all the earlier results. No explanation for this phenomenon could be offered. Chemical analysis of rapidly quenched samples of melt for dissolved nitrogen, and direct weighing measurements, excluded solution of nitrogen in the melt from being the cause of the increase in density. The range of blowing gases was extended by Ward and Hendersons who measured the density of liquid iron oxide bubbling helium, nitrogen, neon, argon, and krypton. The measured density was found to decrease smoothly with increasing atomic number of the bubbling gas. The work reported here is a continuation of the program initiated by Ward and Sachdev7 to study the densities in multicomponent melts in which the iron oxide-silica system is the solvent. As such it is necessary to explain or eliminate the anomalous densities of iron silicates under different atmospheres, and the present rede termination was carried out towards this end. EXPERIMENTAL The maximum bubble pressure method of density determination was again employed and the experimen- tal apparatus used was essentially the same as that used by Ward and Sachdev.7 A molybdenum-wound resistance furnace heated an ingot iron crucible of internal diameter 1 in. containing a 2-in. depth of melt. The bubbling gas was blown through a 1/4 -in.-diam mild steel tube onto the end of which was welded a 2-in. extension of 1/4 -in.-diam ingot iron rod, drilled out to 5/32 in., and chamfered to an angle of 45 deg. The blowing tube was introduced to the furnace through a sliding seal and its position was controlled by a vertically mounted micrometer screw which allowed the depth of immersion to be determined with an accuracy of ± 0.01 cm. A Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple was located below the crucible and temperature control was effected initially by means of an on-off controller and later by a saturable core reactor. The bubble pressure was determined by measurement of a dibutyl phthalate manometer using a cathetometer. PREPARATION OF MATERIALS Iron oxide was produced by melting ferric oxide in an inductively heated iron crucible in air. The liquid was quenched by pouring onto an iron plate. Silica was prepared by dehydrating silicic acid at 650°C for 12 hr. RESULTS Before any measurements of the density of a melt were made, the density of distilled water at room temperature was measured bubbling helium and argon. Both gases gave the density as 1.00 ± 0.01 g per cu cm which showed that the density of the manometric fluid (dibutyl phthalate) was not affected by contact with the blowing gas. With the furnace controlled by an on-off temperature controller an attempt was made to measure the density of pure liquid iron oxide by bubbling argon. The furnace atmosphere gas and bubbling gas were dried over magnesium perchlorate and deoxidized over copper turnings at 600°C. It was found that the pressure required to blow a bubble at a given depth increased slowly with time, and thus it was impossible to obtain a unique value for the density of the melt. Inspection of the blowing tube after removal from the furnace showed that rings of dendritic iron had precipitated from the melt onto the immersed part of the tube. This is shown in Fig. l(a) where the various "steps" correspond to different depths of immersion. The precipitation of iron was considered to be due to one or both of two possible causes: i) The composition of the liquid iron oxide is that of the liquidus at the temperature under consideration and can be expressed by the equilibrium

The properties of the company lie within the Pachuca district, State of Hidalgo, Mexico, connected by three railway lines with Mexico City, 55 miles southwest, and by two lines with Vera Cruz, 250 miles southeast. The ores were formerly divided by sorting into two classes, smelting and milling, the former averaging about 2 oz. gold and 335 oz. silver, the latter 0.12 oz. gold and 23 oz. silver. The smelting ores were sold to custom plants, principally the American Smelting & Refining Co. at Aguascalientes. The milling ores were treated by the patio process at the Guadalupe Hacienda, at Pachuca. This patio was probably the largest in existence at the time and continued in active operation up to March, 1910. In January, 1910, the mines and patio were sold to English interests, represented by Camp Bird Limited. Two new companies were formed, the Compania de Santa Gertrudis, S. A., to operate the mines, and the Compania Beneficiadora de Pachuca, S. A., to build and operate a custom cyanide milling plant. (Pig. 1.) Geology The historical geology of the Pachuca district is described by Fred J. Pope as follows: 1. The most recent sedimentary rooks in the district belong to the Cretaceous period. 2. The Cretaceous rocks were penetrated by large intrusions of ande-site (referred to hereafter as primary andesite) which occur as elliptical dome-shaped masses, striking northwest-southeast. These andesite bodies are from 8 to 15 miles long and from 6 to 10 miles wide. 3. A period of erosion during which the contour of the andesite domes was changed. 4. Andesite flows (secondary andesite) which rest unconformably on the primary andesites.

In 1774 a Swedish chemist, C. W. Schule, first recognized manganese as an element. That same year Schule's associate, J. G. Gahn, isolated the element manganese for the first time. In 1856 the Bessemer process of steelmaking gave birth to the economic importance of manganese. Later, in 1882, Robert Hadfield discovered high manganese steels. Although the primary use of manganese is in the ferroalloy industry, two additional important uses for manganese are making chemicals and dry cell batteries. Manganese is also vital to plant and animal life. Various chemical compounds of manganese are used in fertilizers, feeds, glass manufacture, paints, varnishes, and for numerous medicinal and chemical purposes. For the study of industrial minerals and rocks, only the chemical and battery grade material is of- concern, but for the sake of comparison, metallurgical aspects are included in this presentation. Although currently the world's largest consumer of manganese, the United States is producing only minor amounts of ore at the present time. This is due primarily to the fact that although huge deposits of manganese occur within our borders, all are of such low grade as to be economically unfeasible to mine. For many years various government agencies and segments of private industry have devoted sizable sums of money and time in an attempt to upgrade ores from the various deposits, and also in an attempt to recover manganese from blast furnace slags. In view of current world prices, and the quantity of high grade material available, there is little likelihood that any of these approaches will be found to be economically feasible in the near future. Geology and Mineralogy Mineralogy There are over one hundred minerals that contain manganese. These minerals vary from those with compositions that are predominantly manganese to those having only minor percentages. In general, it can be said that all primary deposits of manganese are carbonates or silicates. The most productive and profitable have been those of sedimentary origin and residual concentrations. Examples of these residual types of deposits are associated with the metamorphosed lodes of Madhya, Pradesh, India, and the lateritic deposits of Orissa and Bihar, India; nodules in the residual clays of the Philippine Islands, US southern Appalachians and Arkansas, Ghana, and Brazil. Sedimentary manganese deposits are best exemplified by the Nikopol district of Russia and the Tchiatouri area of Georgia, USSR. Hydrothermal replacements are characterized by the rhodochrosite deposits of Butte and Phillipsburg, MT. During the past few years there has been a growing demand by coal operators for detailed information about the performance characteristics of the various dryers now being manufactured, preferably in such a form that the information could be used to determine the type of dryer best suited to a particular drying problem. A few operators have been desirous of going even further, because they are of the opinion that present-day dryers are not properly designed and that fundamental studies of dryer design should be undertaken. This growing demand for a method of dryer evaluation and the indicated need for fundamental research resulted in the sponsorship by Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. of a project at Battelle Memorial Institute to investigate the thermal drying of coal. In investigating this problem, the most feasible method of attack appeared to be a survey of active operations to determine the present status of the thermal drying of coal. Data were obtained, usually by actual plant tests with the cooperation of the various preparation engineers and their staffs, for 9 screen-type dryers, 8 rotary-type dryers, 3 continuous-pallet-type dryers, 2 flash-type dryers, I tray-type dryer, and I cascade-type dryer. The testing program provided: (I) data for 24 coal-drying operations, (2) information about the inherent characteristics of the coals dried, (3) information about the previous treatment that the coal had received, and (4) information about operating costs. The data obtained through the dryer survey and relationships determined from the data make it evident that all of the types of dryers included in the survey can be operated with the same degree of effectiveness if each type of dryer is used to dry the sizes of coal for which it is best suited. It should be noted that it is usually undesirable and often impossible to dry different sizes of coal in one type of dryer. By use of the data in the report, any prospective dryer user, having determined the surface moisture percentage and screen-size analysis of the coal to be dried, the tons of water to be removed per hour, and the final surface moisture percentage desired, should be able to determine with a fair degree of accuracy: (I) the difficulty of the drying problem, (2) the approximate cost of drying, (3) the required dryer inlet gas temperature and volume and exhaust gas temperature and volume, (4) the type of dryer to use, and (5) the size of dryer required. The method of testing the dryers and determining the difficulty of drying can be used by operators already having dryers to check the performance of their particular dryer and determine whether they are operating effectively. Considerably more information was obtained from the survey of thermal drying than was anticipated when the survey was first considered. Sintering may be defined as the process by which powders bond themselves into coherent bodies, usually, although not necessarily, under the influence of pressure and elevated temperature. For the sake of clarity and simplicity, the present survey will exclude from consideration the sintering of mixed or alloyed powders, with attendant complications, but at the risk of overlooking information of general applicability. Sintering in the presence of a liquid phase is thus automatically eliminated. The sintering of alloys involves much additional subject matter and deserves separate consideration. Since the literature of the subject is extensive and widely scattered, it will not be feasible to consider the contributions individually. Instead, the subject matter will be classified according to experimental observations and theory, and will be presented in summary form. It should be noted that the appended list of references does not constitute a complete bibliography; it includes only those works quoted below. More extensive bibliographies are included in several of the references; see particularly references 7, 9, 28, 34, 38, 50, 52, 54, a "Bibliography on Powder Metallurgy" published by the Library of Congress and a pamphlet published by the Metals Disintegrating Co. entitled "The Field of Powder Metallurgy and Bibliography." 11. With the advent of the New Global Tectonics a coherent pattern of geology is emerging. To the economic geologist this is of vital concern because the type of mineralization in particular environments is predictable. Developments in geological reasoning now take their place beside developments in geochemistry and geophysics. Much is known of the worldwide geography of the Alpine orogenic period because it is now ending its 200 million years of existence, starting with the Jurassic, and we can see the mid-ocean rises and the down flow zones, and between them the stable oceanic and continental platforms. The concepts of mantle cells, the spreading sea floor, and continental drift have gained general acceptance. The oceanographers have demonstrated the uprises like that in the mid-Atlantic. In this paper it is suggested that down flows in the oceans are marked by island arcs, like the West Indies; and down flows in the continents are marked by orogens like the American Cordillera. The number and position of mantle cells is controversial: a total of about 16 cells is suggested in this paper. Certain cells expand, and as they carry continents with them give rise to concepts of plate tectonics. Specific types of mineral deposits are associated with the uprises, oceanic and continental platforms, and down flows. The uprises are accompanied by the currently described Red Sea and Salton Sea deposits, the oceanic parts of the platform have the nodular deposits, and the continental platforms have the post-tectonic deposits. However, most economic metal deposits are associated with the down flow zones in which the stage of geosynclinal development controls the type of deposit: (1) In the initial development stage the simatic upper mantle may be tapped and give rise to the volcanogenic massive base metal sulfide deposits and to the ophiolite suite which characteristically carries nickel, chrome, and cupreous pyrite. (2) In the early geosynclinal stage sialic crust is driven down into the simatic magma of the upper mantle and basic to acidic differentiates give rise to stocks accompanied by skarn and hydrothermal deposits. (3) The intermediate stage of geosynclinal development gives rise to tin-tungsten, lithium, and beryllium deposits as the magma chamber rises above the level of the upper mantle and there is no simatic component. (4) The late stage is one of regenerated deposits. The porphyry deposits are not restricted to stages but only by the time of generation of acid magma. As the geosynclinal system dies, the mantle is again the source of magma, giving rise to gabbro and diabase dykes and sills: in this last, post-tectonic, continental platform environment are found the Mississippi Valley type lead-zinc deposits, the Blind River and Witwatersrand type of sedimentary uranium and gold deposits, and also Sudbury's nickel. The key relationship of major ore deposits generated by downflows is depicted herein on a framework of uprises, platforms, and downflows in the Alpine orogenic period. There is evidence for nine orogenic periods, of which the Alpine period is the latest, having taken place from 3500 million years ago to the present. Each period was characterized by its own worldwide mantle cell system and associated uprises, platforms, and down flows. The cycle of geosynclinal development, including corresponding cycles of mineralization, can be precisely defined in relation to each of these orogenic periods. The development of the Alpine orogenic period therefore can be used as a guide to the study of the earlier orogenic periods which comprise well known periods: Kenoran, Hudsonian, Grenville, and Paleozoic; and less well known: Konkian, Aulian, Belomorian, and Elsonian [(Table 1)]. Each name is used for the period as a whole, and not for the main orogenic event.

A GREAT deal that has been written heretofore about the properties of aluminum is of doubtful value, owing to the lack of knowledge we have of the purity of the aluminum referred to. Much of the metal heretofore sold in the markets as pure aluminum has been contaminated with from 4 to 10 per cent. of impurities. Indeed, it is only within a very few years that a purer metal than 96 per cent. alumium has been made upon any larger than a laboratory scale. The works of M. The effect of fabrication variables on the creep-rupture properties of TZM (Mo-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.03 pct C), Cb-TZM [columbium-modified TZM (7140-1.5 pct Nb-0.5 pct Ti-0.8 pct Zr-0.05 pct C)], and TZC (Mo-1.2 pct Ti-0.25 pct Zr-0.15 pct C) has been studied at 982º. 1093º, 1204º, and 1315°C for rupture times up to 1000 hr. The creep tests were performed in vacuum creep furnaces, employing cold-trapped oil-diffusion pumps, operating at pressures 2 X 10-7 tory. After-test chemical analyses showed no significant changes in interstitial content. The creep-rupture properties of TZM, fabricated according to current mill practice, were determined in the stress-relieved and in the re crystallized conditions to provide control data. Specimens of TZM, Cb-TZM, and TZC fabricated according to each of two experimental fabrication schedules were then tested. The schedules differed in terms of in-process annealing temperatures and warm -working temperatures. The data make several conclusions evident. Fabrication variables do indeed have a profound effect on the long-time creep-rupture properties of molybdenum alloys. Strengths of these alloys compare very favorably with those of other refractory metal alloys in the temperature range studied. FOR several years we have been engaged in the evaluation of the creep-rupture properties of promising refractory metal alloys. We consider the determination of these properties to 1000 hr at several temperatures necessary for a valid comparison. Such an evaluation indicated that the creep strengths of Mo-0.5 pct Ti and TZM (Mo-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.03 pct C) compare favorably with those of other refractory metal alloys. Tensile and recrystallization data of other investigators1,2 show an effect of fabrication variables. More specifically, those fabrication schedules which produce high strength through work hardening exhibit the least thermal stability. A similar conclusion was reported by perkins3 for Cb-TZM. This would lead one to expect that, in terms of creep, those materials showing higher strength at short times and low temperatures would exhibit lower strength at long times and high temperatures. If these expectations were fact, a substantial improvement could be made in these alloys by optimizing their fabrication schedule in terms of their anticipated service temperature. We therefore undertook a study of the effect of fabrication variables on the long-time creep properties of TZM, Cb-TZM (Mo-1.5 pct Cb-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.05pct C) and TZC (Mo-1.2 pct Ti-0.25 pct Zr-0.15 pct C). MATERIALS All materials used were supplied by the Climax Molybdenum Co. of Mich. Our original intention was to test the same heat of each alloy in different conditions. The piping and segregation of ingots of steel is a comprehensive subject, and must be studied in reference to the different grades of soft, medium, and hard steel, rather than to discuss it in a general manner, as though applicable to all grades. Rail steel, however, will receive the most consideration in this paper, for the wheel-loads of the motive power and rolling stock have doubled from 1890 to 1910. Steel rails and tires which were efficient under the light loads, became less serviceable under the double wheel-loads, quadrupled tonnage, and higher speeds. Bessemer Steel. Bessemer steel of from 0.10 to 0.15 per cent. of carbon, for splice-bars, spikes, and tie-plates, rises in setting, and is cast in bottle-mouthed molds, which must be capped to prevent an overflow from the top. This grade of steel rises in the molds and makes a longer ingot than the volume of molten steel when first teemed. The ingots which are allowed to cool and then cut open, show, particularly in the upper part, large occluded blow-holes, and when they are not oxidized or do not contain foreign matter, weld more or less completely when the steel is rolled or forged above 1,100° C., and it is in this way that the blow-holes are closed in the low-carbon steels. Boiler-Plate and Fire-Box Steel. These grades often contain more or less minute laminations, which are the remains of small blow-holes forming after the setting metal has reached a pasty condition. The blow-holes in the low-carbon steels have not been prevented by usiug deox-idizers, though the ingots are slightly improved so far as the soundness of the steel is concerned. This grade of steel also rises in the molds in setting.

One-third to one-half of the original oil is left in most reservoirs even after thorough gas driving or waterflooding. In contrast, essentially all of the oil contacted con be recovered by flooding with a solvent (a fluid miscible with the reservoir oil). It is not economical to fill a reservoir with solvent since the value of the solvent would very likely exceed that of the oil. A practical method would be to inject a small bank of solvent to displace the oil. This solvent bank in turn could be driven through the rock by a less valuable scavenging fluid, such as natural gas which is also miscible with the solvent. Such a method of oil recovery was studied in the laboratory using long (up to 95 ft) core systems. It was found that, as the solvent moves through the reservoir, the front end of the solvent bank becomes mixed with the oil and forms a relatively short mixing zone between undiluted crude oil and pure solvent. An engineering correlation was obtained which can be used to predict the length of this zone. Displacement of the solvent by natural gas can be achieved with complete miscibility (above the critical pressure of the gas-solvent system at reservoir temperature) or with partial miscibility at lower pressures. Under conditions of complete miscibility, it was found that the length of the gas-solvent mixing zone could be predicted from the correlation developed for the solvent-oil mixing zone. With partial miscibility, two phases exist and the solvent is displaced by a modified gas drive in which vaporization and condensation occur. Equations are developed to predict the performance of this type of displacement. Two plans are suggested for application of miscible fluid displacement. one for miscible displacement of the solvent and the other applying to lower pressures where partial miscibility occurs during solvent displacement. Calculations based on the laboratory tests indicated that a bank of solvent with a volume of less than 10 per cent of the hydrocarbon volume under consideration will generally be adequate to obtain high oil recovery from the portion of the reservoir contacted in miscible fluid displacement. INTRODUCTION The conventional methods by which oil is displaced from reservoir rock—solution gas drive, conventional gas drive, and waterflooding—are all processes in which the oil is expelled from the rock by direct displacement with a fluid immiscible with the oil. Because of the immiscible type displacement, complete recovery of the reservoir oil is not achieved. In economically successful flooding operations, as much as 50 per cent of the original oil may be abandoned in the reservoir as unrecoverable. The use of a solvent (miscible with oil, such as LPG) as an injection fluid does not have the undesirable displacement features common to the use of gas or water (immiscible with oil). It can be readily appreciated, however, that it would not be economically feasible to displace the oil and entirely replace it with a solvent. A process was therefore devised for use in field operations in which only a small volume of solvent would be required to obtain essentially complete oil recovery in the portion of the reservoir contacted. In this process, the solvent acts as a buffer between the reservoir oil and injected gas, allowing the natural gas to displace indirectly the oil with much greater efficiency than if the gas displaced the oil directly. The vacuum-microbalance method was used to study the oxidation behavior of Zircaloy-2 and -3A over the temperature range of 300 to 850°C and at 0.1 atm pressure. The results fit in well with the authors' earlier studies on zirconium. Tin was found to increase the rate of oxidation and also the temperature at which the metal burns. Both the cubic-rate law and the parabolic-rate law gave imperfect fits to the rate data. Since the parabolic-rate law has been derived from accepted physical principles, this rate law was used to interpret the rate data. A heat of activation of 28,600 cal per mole was calculated. The transition phenomenon previously observed in hot-water and steam-corrosion processes was studied systematically for oxygen atmospheres. Observations on the rate of oxidation, color and properties of the oxide films show that the transition phenomenon was associated with a failure in the adherence of the oxide to the alloy. ZIRCALOY-2 and -3A have found important uses in the field of reactor metals due to their low neutron adsorption, good strength and good resistance to corrosion. One feature of the corrosion reaction in steam or hot water is the sharp transition in the rate of corrosion to a higher value after a certain amount of reaction has occurred. This paper presents a study of the reaction of Zircaloy-2 and -3A with oxygen including a study of the transition phenomenon which has been found to occur also in oxygen atmospheres. A comparison will be made between the oxidation behavior of these alloys and the pure metal. It was hoped that a study of the details of the oxygen reaction would lead to a better understanding of the reactions occurring in hot-water and steam atmospheres. Literature Kinetics-—The reaction of Zircaloy-2 and -3A with hot-water and steam atmospheres has been studied by Thomas.' Goldman and Thomas,' Thomas and Forscher," and Thomas and Kass.' Empirical equations for the kinetics of the reaction have been given by Thomas and Forscher." The change from the initial slow rate of reaction to the final rapid rate of reaction has been termed transition with the post-transition corrosion kinetics following a simple linear equation in time. The corrosion behavior in high-temperature steam was similar in many features to the corrosion in high-temperature water. Goldman and Thomas' and Pray and Peoples' have shown that the addition of tin, while increasing the rate of corrosion, counteracts the deleterious effect of nitrogen. The beneficial effect of iron, nickel and chromium was to improve the adhesion of the oxide to the metal as well as to counteract the deleterious effect of nitrogen. Mallet and Albrecht" have studied the oxidation of two zirconium-tin alloys. The cubic-rate law was found to fit the oxidation data for the 1.5 pct tin alloy while the parabolic-rate law was found to fit the data for the 2.5 pct alloy. Kendall' in a recent paper has studied the oxidation of Zircaloy-2 containing 1.5 pct tin in air atmospheres. Detailed study was made of a number of rimming ingots, both low and high carbon, and especially upon effects of superimposed air pressure. Requirement to suppress core bubbles is between 10 and 15 atm; at 6.5 atm freezing was in semikilled manner and at 3 atm, steel was of rising type. Probable mechanism of freezing under various conditions is discussed. AN earlier paper' reported an investigation made by a committee for studying rimming steel ingots appointed by Jernkontorets in Stockholm. The present paper is the outcome of some further work done by the same committee. Since the characteristics of ordinary rimming steel are connected closely .with the amount of gas liberated during freezing and since this amount of gas is governed by the pressure, it was considered of interest to ascertain in what manner and to what extent definite pressures applied to the top of the liquid steel in the mold would affect the solidification process and the consequent structure of a rimming steel of ordinary composition. The experiments were made at the Domnarfvets Steel Works. The steel was made according to normal practice in a 4-ton Rennerfelt electric furnace. Ferromanganese was added in the furnace; no aluminum was added, with one exception. Analyses of the four heats are given in Table I. The top-poured ingots measured about 12 in. sq x 48 in. and weighed about 1300 lb. One or two ingots of each heat were allowed to solidify under pressure, using a special device for admitting compressed air to the upper closed part of the mold, as shown in Fig. 1. A heavy plate sealed with asbestos was bolted to the top of the mold. The plate had a tapered aperture for pouring. Immediately after pouring the hole was closed by a wedged plug, and compressed air was admitted through a hole in the plug. Because of some delay in applying the plug, full pressure was not reached immediately. The pressure was adjusted to the desired value as indicated by a manometer. In order that the interior of the ingot might have the benefit of the pressure, the freezing of the top crust was delayed by a refractory lining applied to the top part of the mold, Fig. 1. Ingots were also cast from each heat without applied pressure, and with and without refractory lining at the top. Axial sections of ingots were cut either of the whole ingot or of some part of it of special interest; sections were polished and usually etched.' In these opening remarks, I will endeavor to give a background of continuous casting of metals. Only passing attention will be given to the different processes to be described by the authors whose papers are on the program, as they are far more familiar than I am with their subject matter. Suffice to say that over the past several years the brass, copper, aluminum and magnesium industries have shifted practically completely from conventional static molds to continuous casting machines. The Aluminum Company of America alone has more than 60 continuous machines in operation. The product as continuously cast is superior metallurgically, less scrap loss is involved, costs are generally lower, and the equipment requires little floor space. A continuous machine, operating as it does with deadly constancy, is a ravenous consumer of molten metal, and in most plants one or two machines are well able to handle large banks of melting and refining furnaces. In steel, interest in continuous casting is today more serious than ever before in history, and there is every reason to believe that continuous machines may secure a minor place in the ferrous industry, particularly for tool and alloy analyses. In the past, steel has been commercially cast continuously, and today many tons of steel are being turned out in this manner. It has been said that the cradle of every science is surrounded by dead theorists— and certainly there are innumerable examples of this in the metals industries. An excellent illustration, for instance, is the continuous rolling of metal, a tantalizing objective that for decades on end exhausted . the efforts of a long line of famous, infamous and unknown inventors. Finally, in 1922, John B. Tytus, of the American Rolling Mill Co., brought forth what now seems such an obviously simple scheme— a concave roll face, each stand of progressivcly less concavity. And out of this one change in design sprang today's wide continuous mill rolling steel sheet Ioo in. wide at 2000 ft. per minute. Another excellent example is the con- . tinuous casting of liquid metal into an intermediate form, preferably one requiring little subsequent breakdown. First, the casting of liquid metal alone was fascinating enough. Then someone passed the cast metal directly into a rolling mill, and shortly thereafter this continuously rolled strip was passed directly into a stamping machine. This leitmotiv of a continuous flow of metal from the liquid phase to a consumer end product, fast and inexpensive, and all housed within a small space, was enough to drive some 200 or so inventors into frenzy over the past hundred years. All the ideas, however, like mayflies, had only their brief afternoon of existence. They were born and they died on paper, as constant exemplification of that great void that always exists between mental production and commercial production.

In recent years, solders containing 20 per cent tin with no bismuth or cadmium have been developed by a few companies, and personnel have been properly instructed in their use. In addition, since the tin shortage, a number of solders containing less than 10 per cent Sn, and some with no tin, are being used in special applications; however, a solder of this type has yet to be developed that is satisfactory for general use. The Purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin, with no cadmium or bismuth, having solder properties equivalent to or better than those of substitute solders now specified containing 18 to 20 per cent tin (Table I), or even approaching the properties of the standard 40 to 60 tin-lead solder. The wartime restriction of bismuth and cadmium, elements that have beneficial effects on fluidity, solidification range and strength, makes it increasingly difficult to develop a general-purpose solder containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin. In the course of this investigation, 11 elements were used in various combinations with the basic I5-85 tin-lead alloy. These elements were antimony, silver, copper, indium, thallium, lithium, calcium, barium, potassium, sodium and arsenic. In all, 116 low-tin solders were investigated, with the idea of developing a solder that will give satisfactory working properties, specifically in regard to "wetting" of copper, brass and iron, solidification range, capillarity and shear strength of a soldered joint. The relative importance of these various properties plays an important role in the search for substitute solders, since it is almost impossible to retain all of the desired qualities of a high-tin solder and still make drastic changes in the alloy composition. Because of the expected uses of a general-purpose solder, it is necessary that it have properties, especially in regard to wet-tability, that will enable it to be used on the metals in common use. THE Columbia Steel Corporation, organized in 1922, and taken over by the United States Steel Corporation on Feb. l, 1930, is operating one blast furnace at Ironton, Utah, which was started on April 30, 1924, and is producing approximately 14,000 tons of pig iron per month. Half of the pig iron produced is basic iron and is used in its own plants at Pittsburg and Torrance, Cal. The ore for the blast furnace is shipped from Desert Mound, Utah, near Cedar City, in the southern part of the' State, approximately 231 miles from Iroaton. The ore is a hematite, disseminated with magnetite, the chemical analysis showing approximately 12 to 20 per cent magnetite, and under the micro- scope the ore has the appearance of a magnetite.
