The present paper records a chapter in the history of the development of an electrolytic manganese industry in the United States.l A relatively large pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev., for the production of electrolytic manganese was conceived as part of the national defense program to make this country independent of foreign importation of manganese ore. The first authorization, in November 1940, however, was for a plant of only several hundred pounds capacity. Improvements in process and subsequent additions to some sections authorized by subsequent appropriations have enabled the plant to produce as much as 2000 lb. of manganese a day for substantial periods of time. Since in pilot-plant operation frequent changes are made in the flowsheet, the electrolytic manganese plant was constructed so that equipment could be rearranged with a minimum of expense and time. Several different kinds of the various ¦ types of equipment were installed for many of the operations, so that the one most suitable for the process might be chosen. Pilot-plant operations were begun in November 1941 and have been continuous except for brief shutdowns for installation of new equipment. More than one-half million pounds of manganese have been produced. The improvements in process, selection of equipment, and operational procedure developed are recorded here. Development of the Process The work of early investigators on the electrolysis of manganese solutions has been reviewed by Shelton. Until the method of continuous production of manganese by electrolysis was perfected by SheltonZm4 and coworkers, no practical procedure had been devised. The method as originally developed by the Bureau of Mines will be described here only briefly. The manganese dioxide ore was reduced in a rotating kiln-type furnace at 650°C. in an atmosphere of "city" gas. The calcine was leached with spent electrolyte and enough sulphuric acid to produce a neutral leach solutioil containing 2 5 grams manganese per liter as manganese sulphate and zoo grams per liter of ammonium sulphate. Arsenic was removed from the solution by the addition of 0.0j gram iron per liter as ferrous sulphate followed by oxidation with manganese dioxide, and aeration, which precipitated the iron as ferric hydroxide. IN his paper entitled, Development of Hindered-Settling Apparatus, Dr. Richards has related the history of the development of the hindered-settling classifier and given illustrations of the several types of this apparatus which lie has designed.1 An earlier paper,2 Close Sizing Before Jigging, shows the nature of the hindered-settling phenomenon and the results which it produces. In the first-mentioned paper Dr. Richards describes the method of getting hindered settling and shows the relation that the constriction bears to the classifier. The question of proper ratios between the area of the sorting column and the area of the constriction opening Dr. Richards leaves open, aside from certain statements as to the ratios which have been found to give good results in practice. While working with a hindered-settling classifier of the type now in use at the Boston & Montana Reduction Plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. a number of interesting facts were brought out which have thrown considerable light on the question of proper ratio between the area of the sorting column and the area of the constriction and which will be made the subject of this paper. Free and Hindered Settling. -If a, mineral particle be dropped into a vessel containing still water, the particle will sink in accordance with the laws of free settling in water, which are as follows: 1. Of two grains having the same specific gravity but differing in size, the larger will settle in still water at the greater velocity. 2. Of two grains having the same size but differing in specific gravity, the heavier grain will settle at the greater velocity.

PROBABLY some of the views advanced in this paper will appear, from a metallurgical standpoint, little less than revolutionary. It is with considerable hesitancy that I venture to offer a few thoughts concerning what, seems to me to be perhaps the most important development of metallurgy since the introduction of Bessemer steel. Dr. John Percy, with that rare insight which characterizes the epoch-making man, described in a communication to the Royal Society, about 1855, an alloy of duminum and copper which he called aluminum-bronze. The name has "stuck." The term "bronze" has been so variously used that I confess I do not know exactly what constitutes a bronze; but I know that in the great materials of engineering simplicity of composition is a cardinal excellence; and I wish to venture the suggestion that aluminum-bronze is not an alloy of aluminum and copper in any such sense as the compounds of tin and zinc with copper (except the copper-tin compound SnCn3) are alloys. There are several reasons which lead me to this view. In the first place, if a series of bars be prepared containing varying percentages of aluminum and copper, and the electrical conductivity of these bars be carefully determined, a curve of conductivity will be obtained, as shown in Fig. 1, which represents the result of such experiments. While I am not sure, at this time, that the values of conductivity shown in this diagram are wholly dependent upon the percentage of aluminum added, the assumption is a probable one; and the curve indicates that an extremely small percentage of aluminum affects the conductivity in a ratio out of all proportion to the amount of that metal. Another reason is drawn directly from experience in the foundry. If we take from the furnace a crucible containing melted aluminum and one containing melted copper, both at a little more than a red heat, and pour them together, the reaction is so intense that the

The formal outline of Mr. Hague's life and work is embraced in the following statement, chiefly based upon data furnished by him, at my request, shortly before his death. At that time the probability that I would survive to record his death was apparently small; but I urged upon him the duty of providing, whether for me or for my successor as Secretary of the Institute, trustworthy material for the notice which somebody would some day have to write—and which might otherwise be incomplete or incorrect. Mr. Hague, with characteristic promptness and freedom from affectation, did what I asked of him; and I am therefore able to present an authoritative sketch—concerning the details of which I shall add my own comments, and some particulars obtained from friends. James Duncan Hague was born Feb. 24, 1836, at Boston, Maes., where his father, Rev. William Hague, D.D.,an eminent clergyman, then resided. After a preliminary education in private schools, he studied in 1854 at the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University; in 1855 and 1856 at the University of Göttingen, Hanover; and from 1856 to 1858 at the Royal Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony. In 1859-1861 he was attached as chemist to a South Sea exploring expedition, sent by W. H. Webb, of New York, to examine Jarvis, Baker, and other islands for phosphate-deposits. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he entered the U. 5. Navy, serving for a year as Judge Advocate to the fleet stationed at Port Royal, S. C. In 1863 he became Superintendent of the Albany and Boston copper-mine, in the Lake Superior region, where he was also connected with the earliest development of the Calumet and Hecla property. THIS work was undertaken with the object of collecting plant data on rod milling, making laboratory tests on representative samples of the various ores, and arriving at a basis for comparing the relative efficiencies of different mills operating on widely different materials and under varying conditions. These efficiencies consider only power consumption and do not include the other elements of operating costs. The over-all economic efficiency may be quite different from the consumption efficiencies with which this paper is concerned. It is hoped that these collected data will be of value in indicating the most favorable conditions of rod-mill operation. Operating-plant data on 14 different installations from 11 plants throughout the United States and Canada were collected, and laboratory tests were made on samples of these ores. The plant rod mills were all operated wet, and either in open circuit or with circulating loads so small as to be negligible. Data were obtained on one roll-crushing operation at the Utah Copper Co., for comparison. The rolls were operated wet in closed circuit with 10-mesh vibrating screens, and with a high circulating load averaging about 600 pct. This particular roll operation can be considered as a model of efficiency. The collected plant data are necessarily incomplete in some instances. Each ore was assigned a code number, and the name and location corresponding to the code number are listed in Table I when permitted. [ ] The power data in every instance refer to motor input. Net power was reported by the operator for samples I-39 and I-45, and this was increased by 20 pct to compensate for motor losses and power factor. The transformation characteristics are found to resemble a similar binary alloy. The differences are due to the alpha iron particles. While strength properties of the isothermally transformed alloys are high, ductility is low, resulting in high notch sensitivity. The elastic modulus can be varied widely and correlates with strength. Abnormal grain growth sometimes occurs. A CONSIDERABLE amount of work has been done on the isothermal transformation of high purity aluminum bronzes using the methods pioneered by Davenport and Bain.' The first isothermal study of these alloys was made by Smith and Lind-lief,' but more recently Mack", " and Klier and Grymko5 have continued the work. In commercial aluminum bronzes, one or more elements are always added to refine the ß grain size and to improve the mechanical properties. The effect of these elements on the isothermal transformation has not been reported in the literature. No systematic study of the properties of isother-mally transformed aluminum bronzes has apparently been reported, although adequate information is available on their properties after more conventional heat treatments. The fact that a eutectoid alloy will reject face-centered cubic a during isothermal transformation at appropriate temperatures2'" warrants investigation of the properties of such structures. Another cogent reason for determination of properties is the fact that the modulus of elasticity of the eutectoid alloy varies widely with the nature of the heat treatment." Preliminary experiments7 indicated that a high purity eutectoid alloy would not give reproducible results in property determinations because of ex- cessive ß grain growth during heat treatment, a single ß grain frequently occupying the entire cross-section of a standard test bar. For this reason a commercial aluminum bronze containing iron as a grain growth inhibitor was used. The isothermal transformation diagram of the alloy was first determined. On this basis, the heat treatments necessary to produce representative structures were selected and the properties determined. Material A commercial alloy (Ampco Grade 20) of the following composition was used: Cu, 83.68 pct; Al, 12.31 pct; Fe, 3.68 pct; Ni, 0.28 pct; and Mn, 0.03 pct. This alloy proved to be very close to the eutectoid composition and may be compared with the accepted value of 11.8 pct A1 in the binary Cu-A1 system. Comparison is valid only because of the "negative replacement effect" of the iron? Since traces of excess y² are present, the alloy is slightly hyper-eutectoid. The material was received in the form of 3/4 in. round, hot extruded bars. Specimens of approximately ? in. thickness were cut from this stock and drilled to allow suspension in the salt bath. The structure of the as-received material varied from 5 to 40 pct a + y2* in a matrix of ß. The amount of a + y² present was dependent upon the ß grain size of the extruded material. Activities of aluminum in solid Fe-Al alloys have been determined between 0 and 75 at, pct Al and 1100" and 1400°K by an isopiestic method in which iron specimens, heated in a temperature gradient, are equilibrated in a closed all-ceramic system with aluminum vapor. The activity of aluminum in these alloys shows a strong negative deviation from Raoult's law at low concentrations but increases rapidly above 40 at. pct Al. The enthalpy and entropy of mixing me both negative. For an alloy with equiatomic composition the values are: HM = -7300 cal and SM = -0.85 eu. Sodium chloride has been added at lower temperatures to accelerate the evaporation of aluminum. Equations have been derived to calculate activities of aluminum from experimental data. THE Fe-Al system has been the object of a great number of investigations.' Most of these studies have been concerned with the phase diagram and specifically with the order-disorder reactions in the range of solid solutions of aluminum in iron. The results have been compiled by Hansen2 and presented as a complete phase diagram, Fig. 1. More recently, Taylor and ones' have found that both ordered and disordered alloys can exist in the a field up to the solidus curve separated by a line starting at 18.75 at. pct Al at room temperature up to 37 at. pct Al at 1375°C. Chipman and coworkers4-7 have studied repeatedly the activity of aluminum in liquid dilute Fe-Al alloys. They have measured the distribution equilibrium of aluminum between liquid iron and

A few years ago, while the writers worked on the constitution of ternary and quaternary alloys consisting mainly of iron, chromium and siliconl,2 some information on microstructures and hardness, not incorporated in the published work, alas obtained. It has not been possible to do any further work on the properties of the alloys. The information possessed is hereby presented for the interest it may have in connection with the constitution of the alloys. Microstructures Referring to the iron-chromium-silicon diagram,' the regions that received most attention were those in which the sigma phase appears. It was found that the mode of occurrence of this phase varied much with the condition under which it mas formed, and the mode influenced considerably the hardness of the alloys. In some slowly cooled alloys, well within the alpha + sigma-phase boundary, sigma occurs in pabterns suggesting a eutectic. The structure of such an alloy is shorn in Fig. 1, showing it to be partly coarsely laminated and partly globular mottled. In other annealed and slowly cooled alloys, the lanlinated structure is entirely absent, and sigma appears in an irregular distribution of sharply cornered elongated areas (Figs. 2 and 3). These areas all possess a more or less mottled structure. A carbide phase is also visible in these two photomicrographs; it is represented by bright white arras of various shapes, sometimes apparently enveloping the sigma. Quenched and aged specimens, whose compositions arc: located near the phase boundary between alpha and sigma + alpha regions, have structures not unlike martensite (Figs. 5 and 6). IN STUDYING the structural characteristics of martensite it is desirable that a clear conception of the material from which martensite is produced should first be obtained. Any theory of its formation and structure incompatible with the facts of its parent substance, austenite, can be eliminated with little consideration. Austenite is the name applied to solid solutions of carbon and other elements in gamma iron. At temperatures above about 900° C. (1650°, F.), pure iron exists in a system of crystallinity1 entirely different from the crystal structure below that temperature. This high-temperature allotrope of iron is of an atomic structure associated with great ductility, having very manifold symmetry and an abundance of easy slip planes. The exceptionally ductile and malleable metals (gold, silver, platinum, copper, aluminum, and nickel) have this same atomic arrangement-the face-centered cubic. The low-temperature allotrope of iron, alpha iron, the solid solutions of which are known as ferrite, has a body-centered cubic arrangement of atoms. Like it, in crystal structure, are the less ductile and malleable metals, molybdenum, tungsten, titanium and chromium. Fig. 1. shows the two atomic arrangements known in iron; the diagrams are drawn to scale. Either of these modifications of iron may dissolve other elements in the solid state; by so doing, the temperature of the transformation is changed. In general2-7, it appears that a solid solvent metal dissolves a metal solute by substituting foreign atoms in its own space lattice. Thus, iron may dissolve nickel in either of its crystalline forms by permitting an atom of nickel here and there to occupy the normal position

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER is to lay a foundation of elementary theory that might be useful in the discussions which it is hoped will be evoked during this Symposium. It is not my purpose to try to expound the details of the most complete theories as that would be impossible in the time at our disposal and, even if time were available, would probably be of less usefulness than a discussion of the principles underlying the advanced theoretical treatment. I shall try to discuss the fundamental bases for these advanced theories. There exists at the present time very much less need for a detailed description of complete theory than existed when this Symposium was being organized. The reason for this is that a series of papers by L. R. Underwood has been appearing in the magazine Sheet Metal Industries. It is understood that this series will he published soon in the form of a book. Dr. Underwood's articles are complete, critical and well written and it would be hopeless to try to do better in less space. The need, then, is for a brief treatment of basic theory. The objective of any theory of plastic forming- is to enable one to calculate the force and power requirements for the process, and where the deformation is not uniform, to calculate the distribution of strains- In the formed object. We need as the basis for the calculation the relationship between stress and strain in the metal, particularly for the combination of stresses imposed by the forming process. We need to know the stress-strain curve for some simple state of stress, and we need in addition some theory

This paper presents a reservoir analyzer study of the performance of the Woodbine formation in the East Texas basin. The study was made possible by the compilation of available information on the configuration. thickness and the pressure drawdown of the formation. The investigation was made of the pressure variations in the basin incident to production from the several Woodbine reservoirs. In addition, the apparent compressibility of Woodbine water was evaluated so that the potential water yield of the formation could be determined. The distribution of permeability of the Woodbine sand and the interference between producing areas were also investigated. In conjunction with this basic study of the Woodbine sand, an acceptable match of the production-pressure relationship in the East Texas Field was established on the analyzer. INTRODUCTION When production is taken from a reservoir contiguous to an aquifer, the resultant pressure gradient causes a water influx into the reservoir. For some years it has been the practice to predict the performance of water drive reservoirs with mathematical equations that relate the water influx into reservoirs to their pressure behavior. A rigorous solution of these equations is quite complex: hence, the conventional method requires the simplifying assumptions that the formation have constant thickness, permeability and poiosity, and that it have a known and regular shape. It is necessary to use performance records of the reservoir in question to determine the equation constants that make the results of the mathematical calculations duplicate the reservoir history. The values of the constants determined in this manner sometimes differ so greatly from theoretical or measured values that the constants appear unreasonable. The equation constants comprise such factors as the thickness, porosity and permeability of the formation, and the viscosity and compressibility of water. Usually the thickness, porosity and viscosity are known within a reasonable degree of certainty. whereas the formation permeability and the water compressibility are known with considerably less certainty. Hence. permeability and compressibility values are arbitrarily selected that will make the mathematical equations duplicate the reservoir behavior. In many reservoir studies the value of the compressibility of water thus selected has exceeded the reported value by a factor of from severalfold to manyfold. Whether this excessive value results from the inadequacy of the mathematical approach to take into account the shape irregularities and the heterogeneities of the aquifer, or is due to some type of formation compaction and decrease of porosity has not been established. Because of the significance of the potential water yield of formations with reference not only to oil reservoirs but to water resources as well, it is very important that a representative value for the effective water compressibility be determined. One of the best known examples of a field for which it has been possible in the past to predict the future reservoir pressure is the East Texas Field. Until about 1943 it was possible by means of mathematical equations to duplicate past pressure behavior and to predict with a high degree of accuracy the reservoir pressure of the field. THE expansion of facilities for rapid transportation of perishables by train, truck and airplane has necessitated consideration of refrigerants of a minimum weight and volume per pound of cooling and has stimulated the use of solid carbon dioxide commercially. The gas probably has not had wide application in the past in air-cooling equipment for mines, theaters or buildings, owing to its thermodynamic properties, as will be deduced from examination of Table 2. However, consumption of the liquid in carbonating beverages remains a dominant factor. In addition to these uses, carbon dioxide is employed to a limited degree as an explo-sive in the liquid form, as a freezing agent in plumbing, in laboratories for low-temperature work, and in the manufacture of golf balls. SOURCES The principal sources of the gas at present are coke ovens, lime kilns, breweries and other fermentation plants, all of which are within easy reach of markets. Natural sources, however, have not received the consideration they merit, mainly because of their isolation. It is asserted by some manufacturers that the carbon dioxide gas produced from wells is unsatisfactory because it often contains impurities that are difficult to remove, while that produced as a byproduct is much purer or contains impurities that are easier to remove.

That the quiescence of a liquid while it is solidifying should favor the formation of columnar crystals, normal of the cooling surface, is seen readily on considering the mechanism of solidification. First, each particle of any composite liquid, whether it be an aqueous solution or a molten metal, in solidifying splits up into two parts, different in composition and hence in fusibility. One part is infusible at the existing temperature, and hence solidifies, and in general attaches itself to the inclosing walls of metal which have already solidified; A, Fig. 1. The other part is fusible at the existing temperature and hence remains molten. In the case of carbon steel, the part of each drop which actually solidifies is poorer in carbon than the drop itself was before it began to solidify, and this impoverishment of the solidifying half-drop enriches the other half-drop in carbon, and thus makes it unfreezable at the existing tern- By this mechanism there arises during solidification a "littoral" or shore layer of liquid B, Fig. 1, bathing the already solidified walls, and more fusible than either those walls or the great remaining central mass of liquid or " deep sea " C, from which it separates them. It is essential that we grasp clearly this conception of a fusible littoral molten layer coating the already solidified walls and separating them from the deep sea. Meanwhile heat is flowing rapidly outward through these walls, its escape cooling them, so that if any given particle of the deep sea metal could get past this littoral layer and come into contact with the solid walls, it would in turn solidify, and like its predecessors would split up in solidifying into a less fusible half-drop which would attach itself to those . walls and a more fusible one which would remain molten. Metallographic, thermal, X-ray, and vapor-pressure data were employed in establishing the Ce-Zn phase diagram. Nine compounds and three eutectics were observed. The eutectic compositions in weight percent zinc and temperatures are 10 pct and 495"C, 37 pct and 795°C, and 56 pct and 810°C. Three of the compounds, CeZn, CeZnn, and CeZne.5, melt congru-ently at 825°, 87.505°, and 980°C, respectively; the other six compounds, CeZns, CeZns.67, CeZn4.5, CeZn5.25, CeZn,, and CeZnll, decompose peritectically at 820°, 840°, 870°, 885", 960°, and 795"C, respectively. The compound CeZn5.25 is an AB5 type with a small range of composition which lies on the zinc-rich side of the 1 to 5 stoichiometry. Zinc vapor-pressure data obtained by the dewpoint method were employed in calczilating the thermodynamic properties of both the liquid alloys and solid compounds. The data for the A critical review of the information available on the Ce-Zn system up to 1960 has been given by K. Gschneidner, Jr.' Of particular interest is the work by J. schramm2 who investigated the region between 55 and 100 wt pct Zn and reported a CeZn,, compound which decomposes peritectically at 785"C, a CeZn, compound which melts congruently at 972"C, and five temperature horizontals at 79@, 817", 840", liquid alloys were fitted to the relation from which the relation was obtained by integration. In these relations F XS is the excess partial molal free energy, N is atom fraction, and the constants c and d have the values c = (-22,000 + 7.0T) and d = 6171,000 + 74.0T). Relations for the standard free energy of formation for the solid compounds were derived from the data. At 973°K the enthalpy in kilocalories per gram-atom z)aries from —11.3 for CeZnz to —8.21 for CeZn~l and the free energy in the same units varies from —7.1 joy CeZn, to -3.82 for CeZn11. and 942°C in the region between 55 and 75 wt pct Zn. No attempt was made to identify other features of the system. I. Johnson and R. yonko3 used a fused-salt cell to measure the electromotive force between pure cerium and an alloy consisting of zinc-rich liquid in equilibrium with CeZnll. Solubility data for cerium in zinc has been reported by J. Knighton et u1 .4 Johnson and Yonko give the following equa-. tions for the mole fraction of cerium in zinc and the standard free energy of formation of CeZnll:

THIS paper describes the results of a series of tests carried out to determine the partition of dodecylamine between distilled water and the surface of quartz at various concentrations of dodecylamine acetate in solution. An adsorption-column technique was utilized for this purpose. Ralston and Harwood, of Armour and Co., had synthesized marked dodecylamine acetate for us.' In their preparation which we employed, 0.0007 pct of the total carbon was the radioactive isotope, carbon fourteen. Unmarked dodecylamine acetate of high purity was also prepared by them for our use. The presence of carbon fourteen in the dodecylamine enabled us to analyze quantitatively for dodecylamine on the surface of quartz, using a radioactive-tracer technique. The method used was that known as internal gas counting of carbon dioxide, formed by oxidation of the amine. This method has already been described, "3 ' and the reader is referred to these papers for details of the analytical method and procedures. and surrounding liquor, a technique analogous to chromatographic columns was utilized. The experimental setup is shown in fig. 1. The dodecylamine-acetate solution was made up in a volumetric flask and poured into the glass funnel shown. It was allowed to drip slowly onto the quartz bed, the rate of flow from the funnel reser- voir being controlled by a hose clamp. The quartz column was contained in a small, fritted-glass filter (size 20 mm, C). The beaded top edge of the filter was cut off to enable the holder and contents to fit into the open end of the 30/45 joint on the combustion tube. This combustion tube is used in the analytical train described in a previous paper.' A piece of gum-rubber tubing joins the bottom of the fritted-glass filter to a filter flask, which in turn is connected to a vacuum line, or water aspirator. LARGE quantities of fine anthracite with associated impurities are discharged with the waste water from the coal-cleaning plants in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. Furthermore, for many years this fine material has accumulated and formed silt banks. The difficulty of removing the impurities from the fine material and the lack of adequate markets are responsible for the waste of this material. In view of a larger demand for fine coal, mainly for pulverized fuel, the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. decided to investigate the froth flotation process for recovery of fine coal from these waste solids. A test plant was constructed and operated for six months during 1942 in order to determine the practicability of recovering coal from the waste water of a cleaning plant (breaker) by froth flotation, and to obtain operating data for designing a commercial plant if the results were favorable. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION Before the pilot plant was constructed information was obtained by field and small-scale laboratory tests to serve as a guide in the design and operation of the pilot plant. Size and ash analyses of a representative sample of the material discharged in the wash water from a cleaning plant are given in Table I. [ ] The refuse content increases progressively as the size of the particles decreases. The larger particles (+35 m.) are low in ash content and could be marketed without cleaning. Since these solids are discharged from the breakers with 90 to 95 per cent water by weight, the first step in the recovery of the coal was that of reducing the quantity of water so that water in excess will not have to be handled. Furthermore, it was found that the removal of most of the minus 200 mesh high-ash material was desirable to permit the most efficient flotation of the coal. Classification tests were run and showed that a hydroseparator overflow rate of 12 ft. per hour was sufficient to eliminate much of the minus 200-mesh material while allowing the coarser material to settle and be thickened.
