CINNABAR was discovered in southwestern Arkansas on Little Missouri River in sec. 1, T.7S., R.26W., in April, 1930, and near Antoine Creek in sec. 28, T.6S., R.23W., some 15 miles farther east in May of the same year. It was not, however, until June, 1931, that cinnabar was identified as such in a specimen from the original discovery area sent to W. M. Weigel1 by Walter F. Hintze of Murfreesboro. Almost simultaneously2, in July, 1931, Moritz Norden of Hot Springs identified specimens from the Antoine Creek area as cinnabar. Immediate interest in the district followed the identification of cinnabar and by January, 1932, the district was known to extend as a mineralized belt about one mile wide trending east-northeast from sec. 13, T.7S., R.27W., in Howard County-across central Pike County and into Clark County to sec. 19, T.6S., R.23W., thence extending southeast into sections 33 and 34 of the same township. Since then, cinnabar has been found in sec. 6, T.7S., R.22W., thus giving a total east-west length to the district of approximately 30 miles. Interest focused mainly on the two discovery areas, with the result that mining development has progressed most rapidly in those localities. In the Antoine Creek area the Arkansas Quicksilver Co. has done con-siderable exploration work and has retorted the high-grade ore so .obtained. In the Little Missouri area the Southwestern Quicksilver Co. has had a 12-ton rotary furnace in more or less continuous operation since April, 1932, and has been the largest producer in the district.

Edward Halse, Puerto Berrio, Colombia, So. Amer. (communication to the Secretary*): The Taviche mining-district is generally known as " Taviches," being named from the two villages called respectively San Pedro Taviche and San Jero-nimo Taviche. It is so called by Jose G. Aguilera, in his paper on the Geographical and Geological Distribution of the Mineral Deposits of Mexico;' and in published reports by the late N. W. Rudston Read ;2 and by Juan de Dios Villarello3 The region is a large one, measuring about 24 miles long and 7 miles wide. Dr. Chance, in his interesting paper, tells us very little about the nature of the ores, and, with regard to the geology of the district, contents himself with observing that " the country, as a rule, consists of eruptive rocks; and no evidences of sedimentary strata appear near the mines." The structure of iron and steel, though the object of so much study and research for the past 25 years, is by no means thoroughly understood. In the first place, we have three or more distinct iron-carbon thermal diagrams, each with its own supporters, and each representing a theory of the structure and constitution of cast-iron. In the second place, by reason of the fact that austenite, the solid solution of carbon in iron, decomposes in the solid state into ferrite, or pure iron, and cementite (Fe3C), and that quenching from above this transition-range, no matter how rapid, cannot entirely prevent the change and thus preserve the austenite by itself at ordinary temperatures, it happens that under the microscope we find, in addition to the ferrite, Fe3C, and austenite, which the thermal diagram of steel requires, a series of transition-products with distinctive structures, to which have been given the names martensite, troostite, sorbite, etc. Now these transition-products, in addition to the solid solution, austenite, have been the source of much controversy, at times very bitter. One side would insist that, say, troostite was an entity, which the other side would deny, pointing out that it must be a transition-mixture, with a particular structure. That austenite was a solid solution of carbon in iron has been denied by one school; we have been told that Fe24C dissolved both Fe3C and Fe, and thus gave rise to a whole series of quenching-pro-ducts—all this in spite of the fact that no matter how the thermal diagrams differ in regard to cast-iron, they all agree in regard to the solid solution, austenite, for Fe24C finds no place on the diagram. THE Geology Department of the University of British Columbia has undertaken the task of examining the ores from as many as possible of the gold mines of British Columbia. The object of this work is two- fold. First, it is known that detailed mineralographic studies are useful in attacking ore-dressing problems, and these studies are intended to be helpful to mill operators. Second, it is hoped that mineralogical and mineralographical studies will prove useful adjuncts to those of lithology and structure in throwing more light on problems related to the origin of the deposits. The paper shows that gold, for all practical purposes, is not present in an ore mineral in solid solution nor as a eutectic with any mineral; if the latter were true the gold particles would be distributed equally throughout that mineral. The gold occurs either as native gold or as a gold-silver telluride and is not distributed regularly through any mineral or minerals. The relationship between the gold or gold-bearing telluride and the associated minerals affords a means of classification that is not only simple but also appears to be directly related to the geological nature of the deposit, which may be summarized as follows: 1. Disseminated Gold Type.-Precious minerals in extremely small grains, which are distributed without regard to grain size, fractures or grain boundaries: (1) Hedley variety-gold in native form; (2) Surf Point variety-gold predominantly as telluride. 2. Veining Gold Type.-Precious minerals in grains of various sizes, which occur mainly along fractures and grain boundaries: (1) Cariboo gold quartz-goldin native form. (2) Waneta variety-gold as telluride. Of the outstanding investigators of the system iron-carbon-silicon Gontermann,1 Charpy and Cornu-Thenard,= and Honda,3 only the first touched on the chemical composition of the solid and liquid phases in equilibrium with one another. He concluded that his data did not permit a decision as to which of an indefinitely large number of pairs of compositions of liquid and solid would be found in any given case. If through the three dimensional equilibrium diagram of the iron-carbon-silicon system an isothermal plane is passed in the region of partial solidification, two lines of intersection with the liquidus and solidus, respectively, are obtained, also a point marking the alloys' composition. If, in this plane, a straight line is drawn through the point, and intersecting both the liquidus and solidus isothermals, the two intersections mark a liquid and a solid alloy that may be chemically in equilibrium at the chosen temperature. From thermal data alone, Gontermann could not assign any particular direction to the line and, hence, could not determine which pair of conjugate points to choose, A separation of the liquid and solid for analysis, obviously, presents grave experimental difficulties. During the solidification of white cast iron, austenite of progressively higher carbon will separate as the temperature falls and cementite will appear suddenly at the freezing point of the eutectic. This cementite will be accompanied by a corresponding amount of austenite which, for our purpose, will be chemically inseparable from the primary austenite. We have attempted to decide on the conditions at the end of the freezing by a chemical separation applied to the solid metal.

This paper is an attempt to put together petrographic, physical, and chemical data about the large and varied group of rocks generally called limestones. Results of the properties of these rocks on their performance as concrete aggregates are discussed. CRUSHED stone classified as limestone comprises about 70 pct of the crushed concrete aggregate and roadstone produced in this country, and the product has amounted in the recent past to about 97 million tons per year, valued at more than $123,-000,000.' Therefore an evaluation of the properties of rocks classified in these statistics as limestones and an ability to predict their behavior as aggregate in portland cement concrete are matters of considerable economic consequence to producers and consumers of aggregate. This paper is an attempt to put together petrographic, physical, and chemical data about the large and varied group of rocks generally called limestones. It also points out certain results of the properties of these rocks on their performance as concrete aggregates. The problems encountered in efforts to explain the behavior of limestones, dolomites, and related rocks as concrete aggregate lie on the frontiers between the ignorance of the geologists and the ignorance of the engineers. The mineral composition and textures of the rocks have not been adequately explored and described, and the effects of mineral composition and texture on the performance of aggregates have been worked out in only a few cases. There are instances of unsatisfactory performance and some generalizations of those experiences. There are many more examples of satisfactory performance than of unsatisfactory, but there is practically no published information as to why a particular aggregate was satisfactory in a specific use. There are all too few investigations of undeteriorated concrete; more is known about the pathology of concrete than about its normal structure and aspect. As part of the investigation of aggregates, the classification of rocks is not an end in itself, but is a step toward recognition of properties expected to influence the behavior of aggregates in their intended use. Rock of any type may perform well or poorly as concrete aggregate, depending on the physical condition of the rock, its physical and chemical properties as compared to those of the matrix in which it is placed, and the circumstances under which the concrete is exposed. Some classification and descrip- tion of the limestones is necessary to distinguish subgroups whose members will probably behave in similar ways and to evaluate the group as a whole. The group name, limestone, includes and tends to conceal the identity of rocks that have a very great range in chemical and mineralogical composition, structure and texture, conditions of deposition, subsequent history, and suitability for use as concrete aggregate. All the rocks classified as limestones include one or both of the most abundant rock-form-ing carbonate minerals, calcite and dolomite, as major constituents. Carbonate rocks is a more descriptive and more accurate group name than limestone, which has generally been used to include dol-omitic or magnesian limestones and dolomites as well as calcitic limestones. Classification and Description of the Carbonate Rocks The question of names to be applied to the carbonate rocks may appear academic, but it is of practical importance as long as there are specifications for aggregate that result in acceptance or rejection of rocks by name and as long as failure to make distinctions among the carbonate rocks leads to misunderstandings of their properties and of what may be expected of them in performance. Materials included in production statistics as limestone and tested for concrete aggregate as limestone range in fact from calcareous shale and calcareous or dolomitic sandstone and argillaceous limestone and dolomite to calcitic limestone and pure dolomite and to rocks close to calcitic and dolomitic marble. To take a simple example: consider two manufactured coarse aggregates, both dense and unweathered, one composed principally of crystalline calcite and the other of crystalline dolomite, but both known as limestone. If each is used as coarse aggregate in a standardized concrete mixture with the same fine aggregate used in both cases, made into concrete specimens, and tested in accelerated freezing-and-thaw-ing, the test results will probably be quite different, because of the differences in internal bond and thermal properties between the two aggregates. As long as both aggregates are called limestone, the test results cannot be explained, or used except in a very limited way; if the aggregates are distinguished as limestone and dolomite and the consequent differences in texture and thermal properties are recognized, the results are reasonable. The Evergreen mine, located at Apex, in the northern part of Gilpin county, Colorado, has opened a very peculiar and interesting copper-deposit, in which both bornite and chalcopyrite occur as rock-minerals. The country-rocks are crystalline schists cut by dikes of granu-lite and of pegmatite. At the Evergreen property they have been cut by a dike of a uew kind of eruptive rock, to which I have given the name " Evergreenite." The rock is composed of quartz, alkali feldspars, orthoclase and albite (often interlocked as microperthite), with augite of the ægirine variety and long needles of enstatite and diallage. For reasons stated below, I believe the dike to be of Tertiary age. It is easily traced on the surface of the ground, from a point in the bottom of Pine creek, about a mile below Apex, to the top of Nevada hill, 1,500 ft. beyond and 600 ft. above it. (See Fig. 1.) It varies from 3 to 12 ft. in width, and is bounded on both sides by contact-zones about 60 ft. wide, in which the crystalline schists have been changed into pseudo-quartzites or pseudo-gneisees, according to the injection of an excess of quartz or of feldspars through the special layer of the schists. The most interesting feature is the presence of the pyroxenes, which are always found, though in very variable proportions from place to place, in the layers of these metamorphosed crystalline schists. The dike has torn from its walls a large number of fragments of the wall-rock. It must have been in a viscous state when that happened, because these fragments of the wall-rock do not show any sign of resorption or of assimilation by the magma. In places they are so distinct and so numerous that the rock looks to the naked eye like a pseudo-breccia, of which, never-

Vapov pressure data of solid and liquid alloys along with phase diagram data WERE employed in calculating the thermodynamic properties for the Ca-Zn system. Relations for the standard free energy of fortnation for the eight cornpounds were developed. ThE phase diagram for the Ca-Zn system as determined by Messing et a1.' is reproduced in Fig. 1. Earlier work on the phase diagram has been summarized by Hansen and Anderko2 and the very limited thermodynamic information for this system has been reviewed by Hultgren et a1.3 The heat of fusion for the compound CaZn2 has recently been determined to be 9260 cal per mole.4 Solubility data for calcium in zinc for the temperature range of 650" to 725°C were fitted by the relation and reported by Johnson and Dilloon5 In the present investigation zinc vapor pressure data were obtained by both the dewpoint and Knudsen methods in order to calculate the thermodynamic properties for liquid and solid alloys. The dewpoint method as employed in this work requires that only one of the components be significantly volatile, in this case zinc, and that the vapor pressure of pure zinc be known. For calculation purposes the vapor pressure data for pure zinc3 were fitted to the relations; for temperatures below 692.7K, the melting point of zinc. The corresponding free-energy relations for vaporization and sublimation of pure zinc are respectively. Some of the calculations also required knowledge of the free energy of fusion of zinc and calcium and the free energy for the 721°K allotropic transformation of calcium. The free energy of fusion of zinc was taken to be the difference between Eqs. [4] and [5], or The free energy of fusion and transition for calcium were based on the enthalpy values of 2040 and 222 cal per g-atom, respectively, as reported by Chiotti et al. 4 and the heat capacity data given by Hultgren et a1.3 and are represented by the relations, In the latter expression the difference in heat capacity between the a and 0 forms of calcium was neglected. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals used in preparing the alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc, 99.99 pct pure, and Ames Laboratory calcium. The average impurities in the calcium in parts per million by weight, ppm, were N-17, H—77, Ba—216, Mg-15, Si—7, C—157, and Fe—9. The zinc was cleaned in dilute nitric acid and the calcium was used as received. The calcium was stored and handled in an argon-filled glove box and when removed from the dry box it was kept in an argon-filled desiccator. Tantalum was found to be a suitable alloy container. The titanium-aluminum system has been investigated in the composition region 0 to 34 pct Al in the temperature range 800" to 1450°C. The phases encountered in this region were: a,ß, TiAl3, The reactions observed are as follows: 13 ; L - 6T. A1, 0 (15 pct Al) + 6 (18 pct Al) - yTi Al (16.5 pct Al) at -1170°C andP (7 pctpct Al) + y (9.2 pet Al) - ah(9 pct Al) at - 1060°C. A eutectoid reaction: y — a +d belm 700°C is postulated. THE Ti-A1 system has been the sub.ect of a number of investigations. Several of these1-3 have indicated extensive solubility of A1 in both a and ß titanium. Ence and Margolin, as a result of work on the Ti-A1-0 system:'5 have shown that the a solubility ofalumi-num is considerably restricted, and found that a compound, Ti2A1 existed in the region formerly designated as Q a This structure was identified as hexagonal with c/a = 0.803. Pietrokowsky confirmed the existence of this phase7 and pointed out that the structure was isomorphous with Ti3Sn.8 Although the existence of Ti,A1 has been confirmed by others,9-12 there has been considerable disagreement regarding the composition and mode of formation. A detailed reinvestigation of the Ti-A1 system has been published by Sagel et al.13 The tentative diagram indicated two phases, a, and e, occurring in the former all a region. The a, phase has the same structure as Ti2A1 and was indicated as having a broad region of solubility. Epsilon, a tetragonal phase, was shown to form within the a, solubility region. AS a result of unpublished work,14 Ence and Mugy3 olin disagreed with the interpretation of Sage1 et al., although some common features existed. The present study was conducted in an attempt to clarify prevailing uncertainties. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloy Preparation—Alloys were prepared from iodide titanium (99.9 pct Ti with less than 0.01 pct Zr) or Bureau of Mines electrolytic titanium (BHN-73) and high purity aluminum (99.99 pct). Alloys were arc-melted in argon or helium atmosphere as 15-g buttons in the composition range up to 34 pct Al. Depending on need, alloys were made in increments varying from 0.25 to 2 pct Al. Up to five 15-g buttons of some compositions were made. Weight losses during melting did not exceed about 1 pct of the charge and chemical analysis revealed that both titanium and aluminum were evaporated. In general, nominal and analyzed compositions agreed within 0.5 pct and therefore nominal compositions were used in plotting the data. Unavoidably, some overlap of composition occurred, particularly where small increments of A1 were used. The small increments were primarily used to obtain alloys which would fall into the narrow a -, r region and this purpose was achieved. In general, the data obtained from Bureau of Mines base titanium and iodide titanium alloys were in agreement. Forging—Both as-cast and forged samples were employed. Samples were heated for hand forging by an oxygen-hydrogen torch to the region 1200" to 1300°C. A titanium anvil and cover plate were used to prevent any iron pick-up and consequent formation of a low melting point compound. Frequent reheating kept the temperature in the desired range. Under these conditions, alloys containing up to 15.5 pct could be successfully forged. To check on the depth of contamination, forged alloys were heated slightlybelow the ß transformation temperature. Metal was removed to a depth below the contaminated surface so revealed, and the subsequent results obtained from these samples agreed closely with those secured from as-cast material. Heat Treatment—Prior to heat treatment, all alloys were vacuum annealed to remove hydrogen. Samples

IN the spring of 1905 I was employed by Messrs. Bradley and Requa, under our fellow member, Thomas Cox, on the mill plans for the Nevada Consolidated, when an opportunity came to go to the Philippines to erect a small mill on the property of the Benguet Consolidated. This I accepted, expecting to be away eight months or so, but it was seven years before I got back. .I sailed in May, on the Coptic, having as room-mate as far as Kobe, A. E. Drucker, who was going out to Korea for the Oriental Consolidated. It was the first trans-ocean trip for either of us, and we had some rather unusual experiences. This was toward the close of the Russo-Japanese war and the Russian fleet was known to be on the way from Suez to Asiatic waters, but it was a matter of doubt whether they would risk a passage between Japan and the mainland, or take the longer but obviously safer route outside of Japan. The Coptic carried much contraband of war for Japan, so naturally did not care to meet this fleet. No definite word being available at Honolulu, we went to the Midway Islands, but the cable station there had very little information to offer, so we proceeded cautiously toward Japan. On the last afternoon out, we steamed due north at half speed for several hours, and finally sneaked into Yokohama at night, to learn that ' the Russian fleet had met the Japanese the day before and had been annihilated. We sailed over the spot in the Sea of Japan a week later, and when we got to Manila we found three of the Russian boats interned and being guarded by the monitor Monadnock and a cruiser. This was only a matter of form, as the Russians were only too glad to be there for the rest of the war, and the boats could not have gone far anyway, for they were literally shot to pieces. The Admiral's flagship had a hole within 3 ft. of the water line, for ward, through which a man could enter by stooping.

HOT metal is commonly transported from the blast furnace to the open hearth by one or the other of two general methods: (1) by hot-metal ladles, usually in conjunction with a stationary mixer, or; (2) by means of mixer-type ladle cars, taking the place of both the hot-metal ladles and the stationary mixer. In both cases, the use of transfer ladles for charging the metal into the open-hearth furnaces is necessary. The American Rolling Mill Co. at its Middletown division, adopted hot metal practice on. June 2, 1928. The pig iron is produced' in a .blast furnace about 11 miles from the open-hearth furnaces, and is trans- ported in Pugh-type mixer cars having a capacity of 150 gross tons each. Three cars are in service and handle the delivery of hot metal to the pig machine and the open-hearth furnaces. The capacity of the blast furnace is 550 tons and casts are made every four hours.

Nepheline syenite is a silica deficient crystal-line rock consisting of albite and microcline feldspars and nepheline, together with varying but small amounts of mafic silicates and other accessory minerals. Nepheline-bearing rocks are widely distributed around the world but only in Canada, Norway, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and the United States are deposits worked commercially, Because of its low melting point and fluxing ability, nepheline syenite was investigated in the early 1900s by many students of glass and ceramics. Although the nepheline syenite deposits in Methuen Township, Ont., Canada, were discovered as early as 1897 it wasn't until 1935 that the first mill was erected to produce nepheline syenite products. In Canada, nepheline syenite deposits are worked by Indusmin Ltd. and International Minerals and Chemical Corp. (Canada) Ltd. who have combined production capacity in excess of 1800 stpd. Between 1935 and 1972 seven million tons valued at $78 million were produced from the Methuen Township deposits. In Norway, the Norsk Nefelin Div. of Elkem Spigerverket has produced nepheline syenite from a deposit on Stjernöy Island in western Finland since early 1960. Production has increased from 8 kt in 1961 to over 200 kt in 1980. Nepheline syenite has been under investigation in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) since at least 1928. In 1951 the first commercial alumina works was brought on stream at Volkhov, near Leningrad, utilizing nepheline concentrates from the Kola peninsula as mill feed. Since then two others have been completed and more are planned. Large quantities of portland cement, sodium carbonate, and potassium carbonate are produced in conjunction with the alumina. A material called nepheline syenite, but actually a pulaskite, is produced in Pulaski County, Arkansas, by the McGeorge Construction Co. for construction aggregates and by the 3M Co. for roofing granules. The Dome Fill Co. purchases the fines and uses them in the preparation of enclosed construction fill. Production is over 2,000,000 stpy. Chap. 16 on "Feldspar, Nepheline Syenite, and Aplite" in the 3rd ed. of Industrial Minerals and Rocks (Castle and Gillson, 1960) and Nepheline Syenite Deposits of Southern Ontario (Hewitt, 1960) contain excellent accounts of earlier commercial development of nepheline syenite as a glass and ceramic material. As in the 4th ed., this chapter deals mostly with the period since 1960 and with matters not previously reported in detail. An English monograph on Nepheline-Syenite and Phonolite (Allen et al., 1968) is a complete survey, at the time, of nepheline syenite which, with its very complete list of references, is an excellent source book. End Uses Nepheline syenite from the Canadian and Norwegian producers finds use primarily in the manufacture of glass and ceramics. One producer also makes several grades of nephellne syenite that are useful as extender pigments and fillers in paint, plastics, and rubber. In the Soviet Union nepheline is used in increasing quantities in the manufacture of alumina, alkali carbonates, and portland cement and to a lesser degree it is used in the manufacture of colored container glass.

The search for new deposits raises two important questions: Where did the metallic ions that formed the orebodies come from? What processes and geologic factors were involved in ore replacement? A review of the wide geological variety of recent uranium discoveries tells how these questions are being answered. SOONER or later intelligent exploration for uranium leads to these questions: Where did the metallic ions that formed the orebodies come from? What processes and geologic factors were involved in ore replacement? These matters, of course, make a big difference in how best to look for orebodies. Before these questions are discussed it might be well to point out other factors bearing on the subject. The whole business of uranium exploration is only a little over ten years old, participation by the public is only about six years old, and real interest and activity by more than a few large mining companies has arisen only in the past two or three years. Throughout this short period, uranium exploration has been affected by the unique influences of necessary security measures and by division of the overall job into individual projects by a large number of specialists in diverse fields. This has meant that a normal interchange of information on the nature of uranium deposits has really only just begun. Compared to the vast amount of published studies on iron, copper, lead, zinc, and gold deposits over the past 50 to 75 years, current knowledge of uranium deposits is in its infancy and much of the pertinent information is still scattered about in a number of unpublished sources. The volume of reports on all phases of uranium exploration is now beginning to mount at a remarkable rate, and geologists with widely varying specialized backgrounds in uranium geology are engaging in spirited debates over the origin of uranium and the relative importance of geologic controls of various deposits. One of the most interesting features of known uranium deposits of the world is the wide variation, see Table I, in character and geologic environment. It should be noted that many types became prominent during 1953. The davidite-bearing veins of Radium Hill, South Australia, are almost unique, although the same mineral occurs in a different kind of deposit in Mozambique. Recent studies indicate that brannerite disseminated in the granite near Cracker's Well, South Australia, may soon constitute uranium ore. Basalt has been added to the list of favorable host rocks in the Northern Territory of Australia. Basalt is also the host of the pitchblende veins of the Martin Lake deposit, Beaverlodge district, Saskatchewan. The truly remarkable rich and extensive Steen deposit near Moab, Utah, is of the uraninite-vanadium oxide type. Secondary hydrous uranium arsenates and phosphates constitute the uranium minerals in the disseminated deposits of the Wind River Basin, Wyo., a new district discovered in the summer of 1953. Uranium minerals in shales adjacent to fractures were newly reported in New Mexico and several other parts of the world during the year. The well-known important uraninite dissemination in the Rand conglomerates of South Africa has a counterpart, as discovered in the summer of 1953, in the Mississagi quartzite and conglomerate of the Blind River district, Ontario. Gunnar deposit of the Lake Athabaska district, Saskatchewan, consists of uraninite in both granite and sedimentary gneiss beneath a granite cap, and large new orebody of the Eldorado Co. in the same general area follows a preferred stratigraphic horizon in schists. Uranium is, generally speaking, a very soluble and ubiquitous element. It occurs in at least two valency states and for this reason is not easily tied down in natural solutions. As Gruner' has pointed out, it is probable that uranium starts in the hexava-lent state in nearly all solutions instrumental in its transfer. Klopp et al. have reported data on tensile and creep properties of are-melted and electron-beam-melted tungsten. We would like to point out some similarities between their creep results and ours on are-melted and powder-metallurgy tungstenand offer some alternate interpretations of the data which lead to different rate-controlling mechanisms. Klopp et al. observed extensive transient creep in the 2250" to 3500°F temperature range where the acthetivation energy is 106,400 ± 3300 cal mole-1. They suggest cross slip as the possible rate-controlling mechanism since "cross slip may occur only by the movement of screw dislocations, and not edge dislocations, thus allowing only partial recovery of the strain hardening and resulting in a continuously decreasing creep rate, characteristic of transient creep.'' Our tests on are-melted tungsten and powder-metallurgy tungsten displayed an extensive transient creep stage in the same temperature range but they also displayed a steady-state creep stage. The stress levels and strain rates of the two investigations, 1.4 to 7 kg mm-2 and 10-7 to 10-4 sec-1 for that of Klopp et al. and 4.5 to 10 kg mm-2 and 10-8 to 10-4 sec-1 for those of Gilbert et al., are overlapping. The activation energy for creep of our powder-metallurgy tungsten is 105,000 cal mole-1. This close agreement with the value found by Klopp et al. suggests that the same mechanism may be common to both types of materials. It may be possible to gain some additional insight into the rate-controlling mechanism by applying the analysis made by conrad22 in terms of the activation volume. The value for the activation volume depends upon the dislocation mechanism and may be used to help differentiate between various dislocation mechanisms. The activation volume for cross slip is 10 to 100 b3. Values determined from our data were 130 to 220 b3 which are in better agreement with the range of 102 to 104 b3 for nonconservative motion of jogs. Values determined from data of Klopp et al. are 240 to 1040 b3. We suggest that the rate-controlling mechanism for creep in this temperature range may be nonconservative motion of jogs assisted by enhanced diffusion along grain boundaries or dislocations. This model requires an activation energy lower than that for self-diffusion as is observed. If this is the controlling mechanism, a higher activation energy which is closer to that for self-diffusion might be expected for tests conducted on specimens with reduced grain boundary area, i.e., larger grain size. In support of this premise we have conducted tests on speci- mens having one to three grains per cross section for which a higher activation energy of 130,000 cal mole-1 was observed. Also, in agreement with results of Klopp et al., a faster creep rate resulted from the increased grain size and probable decreased dislocation density. Further argument against the cross slip mechanism is based on the constant activation energy we obsserved over the range of 5.0 to 10 kg mm-2,21 whereas the activation energy for cross slip displays a significant stress dependence.23 In addition to this, the powe on the stress term for the strain-rate dependence appears too high for cross slip. The values for tungsten fall in the range of 4.5 to 7 (Klopp et al. and Ref. 21) whereas values of approximately 2 are observed in creep by cross slip for hep metals.24 At temperatures from 3300° to 4000°F, Klopp et al. observed an activation energy of 141,000 ± 4000 cal mole-' which is less than that for self-diffusion, 153,000 cal mole-1, 25 and less than that reported for high-temperature creep of powder-metallurgy tungsten by Green:' 160,000 cal mole-1. Klopp et al. suggested that recovery of strain hardening by dislocation climb is the rate-controlling mechanism in this temperature region. Actually an activation energy larger than that for self-diffusion is predicted by this model if the temperature dependence of the elastic modulus27 is taken into consideration. Klopp et al. attributed this lack of correlation to the compositional differences between powder-metallurgy tungsten used by Green and their own arc- and EB-melted tungsten. It is our position that the value of 141,000 ± 4000 cal mole-' represents a transitional value between the higher and lower activation energies and does not represent a discrete mechanism of deformation. If the tests had been extended to higher temperatures the higher value of activation energy would have been observed as has been demonstrated by both our analy sis'' of isothermal test data by GE-NMPO28 and differential temperature tests28 on are-melted tungsten. The activation energies determined (170,000 and 160,000 cal mole-1) were greater than that for self-diffusion and are in better agreement with the value found by Green. The model of dislocation climb is associated with ; activation volume of 1 b3 according to Conrad.22 The activation volume calculated for the creep data of fou independent investigators in the temperature range where the activation energy for creep is near that for self-diffusion (Klopp et al. and Refs. 26, 28, and 30) is 110 to 2800 b3 and is in the range suggested for nonconservative motion of jogs. The solubility of chromium in liquid silver and that of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin have been determined by equilibrating Ike Liquid in a crucible of the solule metal. Generally the weight of solute in solulion was delermined both chemically and from crucible weight losses. The resulting weight percent solubilily of chromium in silver as a function of absolule temperature T is given by log w = -6660/T + 4.02 in the range 960° to 1445°C, and that of molybdenlttrl in tin by log w = —5050/T + 1. 79 in the range 1200° to 2200°C. The values appear unaffected by minor changes in solute composition. Calculations aye made of the parlial molar heal and excess entropy of mixing. The estimated solubility of tungsten in tin is 0.001 pct at 2000°C. Evidence is presented that molybdenwm dissolves in tin without compound for mation and that tungsten and tin form W10Sn. RECENT developments in coatings, heat transfer, and brazing require a knowledge of equilibrium solubilities in a variety of systems at elevated temperatures. Of particular interest are solid-liquid interactions in metal systems involving dilute solutions. This investigation was undertaken since little is known about the phase relations or solubility of chromium in liquid silver or of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin.1,2 EXPERIMENTAL WORK As indicated in Table I, high-purity metals or those of known impurity levels were used. Crucibles were machined from chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten bar stock 1.3 cm diam and 2.2 cm long. Chromium rod was prepared by arc melting and extruding iodide process crystals.3 The five chromium impurity alloys were in the form of 0.6-cm-diam swaged rod. A Cr-0.06N* alloy was prepared by exposure to NH3 at 1150°C in a closed quartz capsule for 24 hr. Because significant nitrogen was lost during annealing in argon at 1600°C,4 the estimated level was 0.01 pct N. Chromium and Mo,W crucibles were outgassed at 1200" and 1600°C, respectively, at 3 X 10-5 mm. The solvent was placed In crucibles of the solute metal- 6 g Ag in chromium, 0.4 g Ag in the five chromium impurity alloys, and 4 g Sn in Mo,W crucibles. The silver and tin series were outgassed at 900" and 110O°C, respectively, and held at the desired solution temperature in a tantalum resistance furnace under 1.05 atm 99.995 pct Ar. An equilibration time of 0.5 to 1 hr was chosen since 0.3-, I-, and 4-hr anneals at 1235°C for Cr-Ag yielded similar results. Temperatures were measured optically to +10°C under essentially black body conditions which were checked against the melting point of silver. The Cr-Ag and Mo-Sn,W-Sn series were respectively equilibrated at 990° to 1400°C and 1200" to 2000°C. Vaporization losses were generally held to <1 pct by the argon. In the 1800" and 2000°C anneals for 0.5 hr, the crucibles were placed in tightly sealed tantalum cans which kept tin losses to <5 pct. After the anneals, the specimens were furnace-cooled. One anneal was made on small Mo-0.02 C, Mo-0.5Ti-0.lZr, and tungsten crucibles containing tin at 2200°C. The metals were sealed in an electron-beam-welded tantalum can of minimum volume. After the anneal, tin was still present in each crucible, none of which was severely attacked. After equilibration, the saturated solvent metal was selectively removed from the crucible by acid leaching. Weight losses sustained by the crucibles were determined from the initial weight minus the final blank-corrected weight after acid leaching. Chemical analyses were performed on some of the samples. Hot 1:l HNO3-H2O removed silver from chromium with the blank running <0.1 mg or <0.002 pct on measured solubility. Tin was removed from molybdenum and tungsten by hot concentrated HC1 with the respective blanks amounting to -0.004 and -0.0004 pct in the presence of tin. The insoluble residues were weighed and checked for composition. The leaching solutions contained traces of the solute metals which were analyzed by colorimetric methods, Diphenyl Carbazide for chromium, Thiocyanate for molybdenum, and Dithiol for tungsten. The total of the two percentages found from the residue and leaching solution minus the blank gave the desired solubility values. On the basis of annealing empty molybdenum and tungsten crucibles, weight losses due to MoO3 or WO3 volatilization were found to be generally 10.4 mg and affect measured solubilities by <0.01pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Chromium-Silver . Since no intermediate compounds are reported to form in the Cr-An system,&apos; crucible weight losses and chemical analysis of the entire melt should provide reliable measures of the chromium in solution. Values obtained by the two methods are in agreement as shown by the results for unalloyed chromium in Table II and plotted in Fig. 1. Furthermore, the results are consistent with those previously determined by melting equilibrated silver out of the crucible and analyzing calorimetrically for chromium.&apos; On the basis of limited thermal analysis data, the solubility of chromium in silver has been quoted as 8 pct at the monotectic temperature of -1445°C.1 This investigation indicates an extrapolated solubility of 1.38 pct which is believed to be more reliable. DIFFERENT methods of parting gold from silver, and, on the other hand, silver from gold, were discussed in the last book; also the separation of copper from the latter and further, of lead from gold as well as from silver ; and, lastly, the methods for refining the two precious metals. Now I will speak of the methods by which silver must be separated from copper, and likewise from iron.1 The officina, or the building necessary for the purposes and use of those who separate silver from copper, is constructed in this manner. First, four long walls are built, of which the first, which is parallel with the bank of a stream, and the second, are both two hundred and sixty-four feet long. The second, however, stops at one hundred and fifty-one feet, and after, as it were, a break for a length of twenty-four feet, it continues again until it is of a length equal to the first wall. The third wall is one hundred and twenty feet long, starting at a point opposite the sixty-seventh foot of the other walls, and reaching to their one hundred and eighty-sixth foot.

A platelet form of zirconium hydride was found in zirconium and ZY-1 wt pct U single crystals containing hydvogen in the range of 50 to 100 ppm. The habit planes for the hydride plateletg in the zirconium crystals were found to be {1012}, {1121}, and (1122) while the habit planes in the ZY-1 wt pct U crystals were {1121), {1123}, and (1.231). With the exception of the {1231} plane, these have been identified as the twin planes in zirconium. The different effect of hydridc on the mechanical puoperlies of zirconium at high and low strain rates has been explained in terms of the defornzation mechanism and the habit planes of the hydride. ZIRCONIUM and zirconium-base alloys are considered for many nuclear reactor applications, where the pick-up of hydrogen is a distinct possibility, if not an unavoidable occurrence. An excellent example of this is the absorption of hydrogen by zirconium and its alloys during aqueous corrosion, where as much as 30 pct of the hydrogen produced by the corrosion reaction is picked up by the metal. Under the proper conditions, the absorbed hydrogen would precipitate as zirconium hydride and consequently alter the mechanical and physical properties of the zirconium-base alloys. The knowledge obtained from a study of the crystallographic aspects of the hydride precipitation is necessary for the interpretation of the observed changes in the mechanical and physical properties. The deleterious effect of hydrogen on zirconium-base materials is not always observed in normal slow tensile loadings at or above room temperature, but becomes immediately obvious under impact loading, where the energy absorbed decreases with increasing hydrogen content,&apos; and in notched specimens where triaxial loadings are attained.2 This effect is of serious consequence in the applications of Zr where shock loads or high strain rates are experienced. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the crystallographic planes of the Zr and Zr-1 wt pct U matrices upon which zirconium hydride will precipitate and to correlate these with the observed mechanical property data. PROCEDURE Crystal Growth—Single crystals of Zr and Zr-1 wt pct U alloy were used in this investigation. The Zr crystals were made from sponge that had a typical analysis as shown in Table I. Large grains were grown in this material by rapid cooling an arc-melted charge in a button furnace. This operation undoubtedly lowered the volatile impurity concentration below those listed in Table I. Back-reflection Laue patterns of these large grains showed the presence of considerable substructure and lattice distortion within each grain. It was found that an 18-day anneal in an argon atmosphere at 840°C (a high a heat-treatment) followed by furnace cooling, resulted in the further growth of the large grains and removed the detectable substructure ana lattice distortion. Equiaxed crystals with a cube edge of approximately 1/4 in. were produced in this manner. Large crystals of Zircaloy-2 (1.5 wt pct Sn, 0.15 wt pct Fe, 0.1 wt pct Cr, 0.05 wt pct Ni) also were produced by this technique but the large amount of substructure formed could not be removed by annealing. The Zr-1 wt pct U solid solution crystals were produced from an alloy rod consisting of Westing-house-Foote hafnium-free crystal bar zirconium and depleted uranium. The chemical analysis of the alloy is also given in Table I. Three-inch sections were cut from an 0.120-in.-diameter alloy rod and tapered to a fine point on each end. The samples were sealed in evacuated Vycor tubes, homogenized for 5 hr at 1000°C in the ß-phase field, and slowly lowered in a gradient furnace into the a phase (800°C), annealed for 60 hr at this temperature to produce grain growth and furnace cooled. This technique produced large grains approximately 1/2 to 3/4 in. long over the entire cross section of the rod, which were free of observable substructure. Metallographic examination up to X1000 did not show the existence of any second phase in these grains. Crystal Orientation—All crystals were abraded on fine emery paper to produce two flat surfaces 90 deg to each other. The crystals were analyzed by the standard Back-Reflection Laue technique to obtain the crystal orientation with respect to the abraded surfaces. The Back-Reflection Laue Photograms of all crystals used were clear and sharp indicating that the crystals were free from any substructure that could be detected by these means. Hydriding—Only samples containing four to five grains were used for hydriding. Samples that exhibited fine grained patches were discarded. The samples were hydrided using the following technique. Over the past few years, metallic arc welding has been extended to steels of the hardenable type. As compared with other methods of fabrication, production has been facilitated, service performance frequently has been improved, and the overall results have been so favorable that engineers and production men have placed great emphasis on this application of welding. The metallurgist and welding engineer, however, have been confronted with new problems, since, for one reason, the harder steels are more apt to crack and special precautions must be taken if sound joints are to be procured. Some of the factors that are pertinent to this problem are metallurgical, and it is an object of this contribution to discuss steel manufacture and processing methods and to show how their control assists in reducing the hazard of cracking. By this time, the problem of cracking— specifically underbead cracking, or "hard cracks," or parent-metal cracks-—is well known, and a large amount of work has been published, both here and abroad, dealing with this subject.&apos; The tests described are made under restraint to facilitate cracking and arc so designed that a semiquantitative, or at least a relative, value of the cracking tendency is obtained. As one would expect, it has been reported that the incidence of cracking increases with the carbon and alloy content of the steel. More specifically, the cracking tendency is said to increase with the hardenability of the steel, though it is now recognized that the situation is not so simple. The phenomenon itself, on the other hand, has been but loosely described, and it is in only broad generalizations that this cracking has been related to steel metallurgy. Thus, while it has been abundantly demonstrated that the hardenable aircraft steel, S.A.E. 4130, must tend to crack when are-welded, the problem still remains of why two lots of the same composition and the same hardenability can vary so greatly in cracking tendency, or what it is about the prior metallurgical history that so strongly affects the results. Further, while the efficacy of preheating and postheating in preventing cracking is recognized and utilized in production, the mechanism by which they function seems not to have been described. These points are thought to be significant in the production of steel for fabrication by metallic arc welding and, hence, of interest to mill and process metallurgists and welding engineers. Consequently, it is another object of this paper to discuss the mechanism of parent-metal cracking, including the influence of the condition of the steel and the control of cracking by manipulation of the time-temperature conditions during and after welding. A new method of rating the cracking tendency is also discussed, and the results of the test are related to steel composition and structure or prior history. Discussion of the Paper of Dr. H. M. Chance, presented at the Lake Superior Meeting, September, 1904. EDWARD HALSE, Puerto Berrio, Colombia, So. Amer. (communication to the Secretary*) : The Taviche mining-district is generally known as a Taviches," being named from the two villages called respectively San Pedro Taviche and San Jeronimo Taviche. It is so called by José G. Aguilera, in his paper on the Geographical and Geological Distribution of the Mineral Deposits of Mexico;&apos; and in published reports by the late N. W. Rudston Read ;2 and by Juan de Dios Villarello.3 The region is a large one, measuring about 24 miles long and 7 miles wide. Dr. Chance, in his interesting paper, tells us very little about the nature of the ores, and, with regard to the geology of the district, contents himself with observing that ? the country, as a rule, consists of eruptive rocks; and no evidences of sedimentary strata appear near the mines.? The latter part of the above statement is hardly correct. The formation is mainly eruptive, being hornblende-audesite of Tertiary age, which is limited on the east by the calcareous (Cretaceous) formation, and on the west by the Huronian rocks of Ocotlan. Limestone is seen close to the Santa Càtarina mine, at the northern end of the region. In the surface-working known as La Cueva, a little northeast of San Pedro, limestone forms the eastern wall of the deposit which consists of spots (moscas) of pyrargyrite in white opaque or transparent quartz.
