Defor~nation twinning and transformation twinning modes most likely to be operative in Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-C martensites have been determined using a new theory of the crystallography of deformation t~inning.~ This analysis shows that potentially important conventional and nonconventional twinning modes1 have been omitted in previous analyses. Discussion is given on the relevance of the predicted twinning modes to the lattice invariant shear associated with the martensite transformation in steels and to anomalous deformation twinning in Fe-Ni-C martensites. THE two most important criteria which appear to govern operative twinning modes in metallic structures1 are that the magnitude of the twinning shear should be small and that the twinning shear should restore the lattice or a multiple lattice in a twin orientation. The latter criterion ensures that the shuffle mechanism required to restore the structure in a twin orientation is simple. These criteria have been adhered to in the prediction of twinning modes2"6 in bcc and bct single-lattice structures with axial ratios in the range y = 1 to 1.09 as, for example, encountered in martensite occurring in steels. Refs. 2 and 3 in particular consider the martensite transformation in steels and the twinning modes in these cases relate to transformation twinning, and hence the lattice invariant shear associated with the martensite transformation. The list of twinning modes which can be compiled from these sources is incomplete and the ranges of magnitude of shear considered could be unrealistically small, particularly in the case of deformation twinning. The latter consideration is supported by the fact that twinning modes with magnitudes of shear large compared with the smallest shear consistent with a simple shuffle mechanism have been established in, for example, the single-lattice structure mercury7 and the multiple-lattice structure zirconium.&apos; In addition the anomalous deformation twins reported by Ftichrnan4 to occur in a range of Fe-Ni-C martensites still remain unexplained. It is clear that a comprehensive analysis of twinning modes likely to be operative in martensite In steels is required. The results of the application of a new theory of the crystallography of deformation twinningg to these structures are presented in this paper. The theory has been used to determine all shears which restore the lattice or a multiple lattice in a new orientation with magnitude of shear up to a required maximum. The orientation relationships between parent and twinned lattices are not restricted to the classical orientation relationships of reflection in the twin plane or a rotation of 180 deg about the shear direction. PREDICTED TWINNING MODES Twinning modes which restore all or one half of lattice points to their correct twin positions will be referred to as m = 1 and m = 2 modes, respectively. These modes are the most likely to describe operative modes in single lattice structures. The bcc m = 1 and m = 2 modes which have magnitudes of shear s in the range s < 2 and s < 1, respectively, have been given10 and are reproduced here in Tables I and 11. Detailed discussion of the crystallography of these modes and cubic modes in general will be discussed elsewhere (~evis and rocker, to be published). The four twinning elements Kl, &,ql,7)2 as well as the magnitude of shear s are given for each twinning mode, and the twinning modes are given in order of increasing shear. Two twinning modes are given in each row of the tables, the twinning mode Kl, Kz, ql, q2 and the reciprocal twinning mode with elements Kl = K,, Ki = Kl, q: = q2, and 17; = ql. The m = 1 and m = 2 twinning modes which describe twinning shears with small magnitudes of shear and simple shuffle mechanisms in bct crystals with -y = 1 to 1.09 are given in Tables I11 and IV, respectively. On increasing the symmetry of the tetragonal lattice to cubic, that is making y = 1, all modes listed in Tables 111 and IV must reduce to crystallographically equivalent variants of the modes given in Tables I and 11, respectively, or become twinning modes with both shear planes as symmetry planes in the cubic lattice and hence not considered in Tables I and 11. With the exception of this last type of mode only those tetragonal twinning modes which reduce to modes 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, and 2.2 of Tables I and I1 are considered in Tables 111 and IV. For values of y in the range -y = 1 to 1.09 the tetragonal modes and the corresponding cubic twinning modes have approximately the same magnitude of shear. D. F. HEWETT, Washington, D. C. (communication to the Secretary*).-I am not prepared to discuss the metallurgical use of manganese in the form of alloys. In connection with other work for the U. S. Geological Survey, however, I have been investigating incidentally, for about 5 years, the American as well as other sources of manganese. There are some conclusions that come out of this investigation that may interest those whose greatest interest lies in the use of the alloys. From a geological point of view, most manganese ore deposits may be regarded as concentrated masses of manganese oxides, as there are few masses of the other manganese minerals that are rich enough in manganese and low enough in silica to warrant smelting. The deposits of the Huelva district, in Spain, which are largely manganese carbonate and silicate, are exceptions to this statement. Some deposits of manganese oxides, such as those of Russia and Cuba, are bedded with ancient sediments, and although they are clearly concentrated under unique conditions, the source of the manganese cannot be determined. Probably 60 per cent. of the world&apos;s production of manganese ore, or 95 per cent., if that of Russia be excluded, is derived from the superficial parts of deposits that have undergone weathering and enrichment near the surface. In other words, the situation with the manganese ore supply is such as it would be with regard to copper, if instead of being derived largely from deep zones of deposits of deep-seated origin, such as veins, it were derived solely from the zone of secondary enrichment. Manganese oxide occurs in all rocks but is most abundant in igneous rocks, of which, according to Clarke, it forms an average of 0.10 per cent. It also forms 0.05 per cent, of the average limestone, but only traces are present in shales and sandstones. It is interesting that although many commercially important manganese deposits occur in rocks that are but slightly richer in manganese than the average, the most important deposits occur in rocks of unusual character that are much richer in manganese than the average. Thus, the most important deposits of India and Brazil overlie or occur near masses of rocks that contain excessive amounts of manganese garnet and pyroxene.

ANNEALING the binary alloy, Mg-0.5 wt pct Zr in a hydrogen atmosphere results in extensive precipitation of zirconium hydride. The morphology of these precipitates has already been investigated.lm3 Squires, Weiner, and phillips4 found, following creep testing of the hydrided alloy at 450" and 500°C, that hydride denuded zones formed along grain boundaries that were aligned approximately normal to the tensile axis. Zone formation was attributed to diffusional creep by magnesium transport down the prevailing stress gradients.4&apos;5 Recently, electron microprobe analysis by Karim, Holt, and Backofen6 showed the zones indeed to be zirconium-free and furthermore it was shown that in compression, zones formed along boundaries approximately parallel to the stress axis. Thus it was confirmed that the zones are formed by diffusional creep. Typical zone-formation is shown in Fig. 1. Karim, Holt, and Backofen also measured the con- tribution to the total strain, from diffusional flow, slip creep, and grain boundary shear: results showed that diffusional strain tends to saturate with increasing imposed strain, while grain boundary shear eventually becomes the dominant deformation mode. It was suggested in explanation that the precipitate-denuded zones are soft and easily sheared, such deformation contributing to the grain boundary shear measurement. A point to be emphasized is that the Mg-0.5 Zr alloy was not superplastic for the index of strain rate sensitivity of flow stress, m = a log log 6 was only 0.25. It was recognized that diffusional creep in a poly crystalline aggregate must be accompanied by boundary shearing.&apos; The suggestion was that the non Newtonian-viscous character of diffusional creep in the Mg-0.5 wt pct Zr alloy is due to resistance to sliding of boundaries lying approximately parallel to the tensile axis.= The work described in the present note should be seen against the above background for it represents initial efforts to observe in a similar way diffusional creep in a superplastic alloy. Previous work with the ternary-alloy Mg-6 Zn-0.5 Zr, pellet extruded, showed it to be superplastic however it does not contain resolvable precipitates to act as internal markers for diffusional creep. Also the fine grain size of the alloy (0.5 p) made conventional metallography rather difficult. Solubility relationships in the Mg-Zn-Zr system are not well known, however making reasonable guesses about the probable phase diagram of the ternary, Mg-Zn-Zr, various heat treatments were attempted to produce hydride precipitation. This is a compilation and a critical review of the data on the Fe-Ca-0 ternary system. Using the results on the reductiorz-equilibria, an oxygen potential diagram is drawn for the greater part of the system. A number of univariant systems and invariant points, not determined experimentally, are evaluated by making use of the theorem on univariant curves intersecting at an invariant point. The formation of solid solutions and ternary compounds and the crystal structures of some of the phases in the composition-diagram are given for a feu! temperatures. DURING the past thirty years there has been a continued interest in the study of the Fe-Ca-0 system. A detailed literature survey made by white1 in 1943 indicated that further work was required to clarify the phase relationships; in fact, the work carried out in the subsequent years, reviewed by Burdese2 in 1954, made a valuable contribution to a better understanding of this subject. Most of the data were obtained by the step-wise reduction of mixtures of iron oxides and calcium ferrites. However, there is some uncertainty about the phase relationships in this system, arising mainly from insufficient use of thermodynamic concepts in the construction of phase diagrams. In this paper an attempt is made to establish the invariant points from the available data. OXYGEN POTENTIAL DIAGRAM Schenck and coworkers3,4 were the early investigators who studied part of this system by the step- wise reduction method and suggested the formation of two ternary compounds, CaO.FeO.Fe2O3 and 2Ca0.5Fe0.2Fez03, the latter being referred to as point X. They also deduced from their results that the phases Y (8.74Ca0.32.5Fe0.8.74Fe2O3 and Z (2.02CaO-97.98FeO) were formed near the w?stite corner of the system. Martin and voge15 postulated the existence of the compounds CaO.9FeO and 4Ca0.3Fe3O4; the former is very close to the composition of point Z and the latter to that of CaO.FeO-Fe2O3. The most valuable contribution to the presen knowledge on this system was made by Cirilli and Burdese6-8 who showed by X-ray and chemical anal yses that there were two ternary compounds, CaO-Fe0.Fe2O3 and CaO.3FeO-FezO3; the former is the same as that suggested by Schenck et al. and the latter is close to their point X. The results of Cirilli and Burdese show that the phases Y and Z postulated by Schenk et al. are solid solutions of calcium oxide in w?stite. In most of the above-mentioned reduction-equilibria measurements carbon monoxide-carbon dioxide mixtures were used and in a few cases hydrogen-water vapor mixtures were employed. Using the

The Palo Pinto limestone pools of Jones and Shackelford Counties were defined and almost fully developed during the year. A new Palo Pinto limestone pool was apparently discovered when the K. B. Nowels NO. 1 Pardue, S.F.I. and W. survey, south central Haskell County, was completed for a small well in Palo Pinto limestonc at 3395 to 3421 feet. In Haskell County, Amerada Petroleum Corporation&apos;s C. J. Kleiner, J. M. Cass survey, drilled to the Ellenburger with a total depth of 5607 ft., where it was abandoned. A Bluff Creek sand field of undetermined size was discovered by the Fain-McGaha No. 1 Dawson-Conway, P. G. Holcomb survey, which was chompleted for 37 bbl. at 1496 feet. The Cook field was extended by the Roeser-Pendleton B-113 Cook in sec. 113, E.T.R.R. Co. survey, the well being completed for 510 bbl. from Cook sand encountered at 1545 to 1568 feet. Several shallow pools of minor importancc mere also discovered in Shackelford County during the year. In Jones County the Lewis and the Steffens fields, in block 15, T. and P.R.R. Co. survey, were further developed during the year but the limits of the Steffens field were not definitely defined. The most, important discovery in Jones County was the Guitar field, where most of the wells that had been producing from the Cook sand were deepened to the Hope limestone, a new producing horizon. In Taylor County, the Bowles field, see. 28, B.A.L. survey, was defined arid proved to he of minor importance. The Goldsboro and Novice area, ill northwest Coleman County, continued to hold considerable interest because of the developments near the town of Novice, where new Ieases continued to be opened for production. Nolan County was placed in the ranks of the producing counties when the S. B. Owens No. 1 Tipton, sec. 43, block 19, T. and P.R.R. Co. survey,

The nucleation rate of the a (pay) to 0 (white) tin transformation was measured as a function of temperature and a tin particle size using an X-ray diffraction technique. The powder specimens of a tin were essentially monodisperse and the small dinzension of the particles of these specimens was varied from 13 to 75 p. Several types of nucleation sites of differing potency were fbund to be operative in the nucleation process, but it could not be determined whether these sites were on the free surface of the tin particles or within the volume. Assuming that they were on the free surface, the average density of the most potent sites was calculated to be 2.5 to 5.3 x 10&apos; sites per sq cnz through the application of a Poisson distribztion finction to the isothermal data. Analysis of the temperature dependence&apos; of the rate constmts at a given fraction transformed suggests that the active sites are regions of higher free energy and not catalytic interfaces. Appreciable induction periods were observed at the lower temperatures of transformation. Experimental studies1 of solid-solid phase transformations have led to the belief that the new phase nucleates at structural imperfections. The purpose of the present work was to learn more about the mechanism of nucleation in solids and the nature of the singularities at which nucleation occurs. In this investigation nucleation rates in the isothermal transformation of gray to white tin were measured by an X-ray diffraction technique using essentially monodisperse powders of gray tin. This particular phase transformation was chosen for study because it presented fewer experimental difficulties than most others. The experimental temperature-control problems were minimal because the two phases coexist in equilibrium at 13.3"C, and measurable transformation rates occur at temperatures only slightly above room temperature. The growth rate of the P phase into the a2 is sufficiently fast to make the measured transformation rate equivalent to the nucleation rate, provided that the particle size of the samples is small enough; for the experimental temperatures used in this study, the particle diameter must be less than 100 p. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The P tin used in this study was obtained from Capper Pass and Son Ltd., North Ferriby, Yorkshire, England, and was of 99.999 pct purity. It was transformedS to the a phase and ground into a fine powder in an agate mortar. This powder was separated by a Roller air classifier into seven fractions whose dimensions, as determined by microscopic measurement of many thousands of particles, are given in Table I and whose distribution of size within each fraction is given in Figs. 1 and 2. The compressing of gas into a partially depleted gas drive oil reservoir to bring the contents to a single phase miscible with gas is proposed as a process worthy of serious study. The compressed gas and vaporized oil would be recovered by cycling. This paper explores the Possibility of recovering oil from reservoirs of 6,000 ft or more by this method. INTRODUCTION Many new methods for increasing the recovery of oil from reservoirs are under consideration in the various research laboratories. One method which should be considered for recovering oil From partially depleted gas drive fields is to compress gas into the reservoir until the contents become a single phase miscible with more gas. Natural gas then may be cycled through the reservoir to recover the oil. This procedure ideally will eliminate the capillary effects of the liquid ill the porous media and should permit recoveries similar to those obtained in cycling operations, probably of the order of 80 per cent. This paper explores the information now available for the prediction of the performance of such a project and discusses the problems likely to be encountered in recovering oil by cycling. For many years dry natural gas has been passed through oil reservoirs to recover natural gasoline which would vaporize from the oil. Recently a process of recovering more of the high boiling hydrocarbons has been described by employing high pressures at which the heavier hydrocarbons have a higher volatility. Nevertheless. this reported method does not eliminate the differential nature of the vaporization process and capillary forces are still present in the reservoir. The process under discussion in this paper would minimize differential vaporization and would remove capillary forces which are responsible for low oil recoveries. Higher gas pressures are required to accomplish this removal of the miniscus, but it does not follow that more gas is required for oil recovery. The process is limited to reservoirs deep enough to permit the use of the required pressure — Probabably 6,000 it and deeper. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS Briefly, the process is to compress natural gas into an oil reservoir which is partially depleted so that it has an oil saturation in the range of 40 to 60 per cent of the hydrocarbon pore space. The injected gas will pass through the channels formerly carrying gas to the wells to build up the pressure and dissolve in the oil phase. This injection will continue without production from the field until the reservoir reaches a single phase. If one were to select unique conditions such that the gas composition, the reservoir oil composition and the Per cent saturation would bring the mixture in the reservoir to the critical temperature and pressure simultaneously the phase behavior accompanying injection is shown by Fig. 1. The oil-gas mixture in the depleted reservoir has a critical temperature at C,. Addition of natural gas to the mixture will give a new critical temperature for each addition. Mixture No. 3 is shown to have its critical temperature at the reservoir temperature and reservoir pressure at P: the critical pressure. Under ideal behavior, the entire reservoir would be at iti critical temperature and pressure and the entire hydrocarbon content would be at a single phase. If the reservoir content were a binary system of methane and a heavy constituent. it would be miscible with more methane. However, for complex mixtures the critical locus does not confine the two phase region, and the dew point curves of Fig. 1 occur above the critical locus. The fundamental problem in the thermodynamics of solid solutions is the determinatiorl or calculation of the activities of the components as a function of temperature and composition. Since the theory of metals is not suficiently developed to allow a priori calculation of these quantities, they must be obtained from experiment. C. Wagner1 has reviewed the literature of this subject for the period before 1940. Although several important and extensive studies have been made in the meantime, the number of systems to which any sort of quantitative information can be assigned is vanish-ingly small. These data have become of great potential importance in studies of the structure of solid solutions2 and intermetallic compounds, the nature of the diffusion process,3,4 and perhaps even the mechanism of mechanical deformation.5 For these reasons, it. seems very worthwhile to extend the experimental data in this field. Although there is little use in duplicating Wagner&apos;s review, attention should be directed to the most recently reported investigations. A brief enumeration of the methods of measurement previously employed also should be valuable. The most direct method is the determination of the partial pressure of the components in the vapor phase in equilibrium with the solution. Both equilibrium and kinetic methods have been tried in metal systems, but almost exclusively on liquid phases. Only in the ease of carbon in iron alloys and in the copper-zinc system have extensive measure- ments been made which include solid phases. When one of the components is an element, such as nitrogen or carbon, which forms compounds which are very volatile and stable at normal temperatures and pressures (CH4, Co2, CO NH3), it is frequently possible to equilibrate mixtures containing these (such as CH4-H2, CO2-CO, NH3-H2) independently with the elernents (C, X) and with the metal (Fe, Ni, etc.). Such measurernents have been made for carbon in iron, iron-silicon, and iron-manganese alloys by Smith6 and in iron and iron-nickel alloys by Toensing.7 Differences between carbon activity values at the same temperature and carbon content when carboil is introduced from CH4-H2 rnixtures or CO-CO. mixtures indicate that the effects of hydrogen and oxygen in the system are not negligible, and one can only hope that the true value lies somewhere between these sets of results, probably nearer the CH4-H2 data since hydrogen is less soluble in iron than oxygen. This is essentially an equilibrium method, although flowing gas is employed. A kirletic method has been employed which consists of sweeping an inert gas (generally hydrogen) over the alloy at a series of rates, condensing the metal vapor out,, and analyzing it. The metal content can be extrapolated to zero flow rate (equilibrium). Wejnarth&apos;s8 work on Cd-Mg and Zn-Mg is a good example of this frequently used method. A variant of this consists of equilibrating a known volume of inert gas with the alloy, sweeping it out quickly, and analyzing for metal. In common with the above method, it has the disadvantage that the "inert" gas is generally somewhat soluble in the alloy. Moreover, the former continuously displaces the system from equilihrium and may give low values if solid diffusion is involved. The dew point method applied by Hargreaves9 to the alpha and beta brasses and by Schneider and Stolll0 to A1-Zn avoids the introduction of another component to the system, but is useful only in systems in which one component is much more volatile than the other. The alloy sealed in one end of an evacuated silica tube is heated to the desired temperature. The temperature of the other end is lowered until droplets of the volatile component condense. When the temperature is raised slightly, the droplets will evaporate. By careful adjustment of temperature, the range between evaporation and condensation can be narrowed appreciably. An independent determination of the vapor pressure of the . pure volatile component is necessary to give the partial pressure over the alloy. This is the method employed here to determine the vapor pressures of zinc and cadmium over their silver alloys up to 34 pct in cadmium and 76 pct in zinc. The former involves only the a solid solution, but the latter covers the a, ß, y, and e fields. In recent determinations, Herbenar, Siebert, and Duffenbarkl1 used the

The experiments herein described were carried on in 1908-9 by- the State Geological Survey of Kansas. Some months before taking up work on black powder the Survey had resumed work on an interrupted investigation of explosions in coalmines, a subject which is engaging the attention of numerous investigators. An unusual number of serious disasters has directed to the subject a study which discloses the disquieting fact that, in the United States, the ratio of lives lost per ton of coal mined has been 011 the increase. Methods of coal-mining have changed to some extent with the great increase of output, attained in comparatively recent years. These changes involve the working of very extensive mines, with increased difficulty of ventilation, increased accumulation of coal-dust, and a very great increase in the amount of explosive used. This last point assumes truly startling proportions when it is carefully observed. In the fields of the Middle West it is not now uncommon for a miner to use six kegs (150 lb.) of black powder in a " pay" of two weeks, while within the memory of men still active, one keg (25 Ib.) would last two men for a " pay." So great has the use of explosives become in some fields that the skilled coal-miner is hard to find, and the coal is not mined, but blasted. Solid, cylindrical crystals of a iron have been fractured at 10°K by the simultaneous application of tension and torsion stresses. Thus, a complex distribution of normal (sN) and shear (ss) stresses existed in a cleavage plane at fracture. In every crystal the clearage-plane normal was inclined to the specimen axis, so that a unique point, M*, in the operative cleavage plane was defined where the quantities sn and s2 N + s2 S) were maximized. It is shown that the maxirrzum resolved normal stress on the cleavage plane at fracture decreased as the resolved shear stress in the cleavage plane at M* increased. Thus, a normal stress la?*! for fracture was not satisfied. A fracture law which takes shear stress into account. and which predicts that (s2 N +s2S) should be constant, is to be preferred. However, the data is best represented by a linear dependence of sN on sS, sS which 110 physical significance can be attached. It is suggested that the fracture-nucleating -mechanism is a short-range one. A critical stress law has not yet been unequivocally established for the propagation of cracks in metals. Measurements of the tensile fracture stresses of variously oriented zinc single crystals1 failed to establish the normal stress law expressed by In Eq. [1], sN is the fracture stress, P, resolved normal to the fracture plane, and 0 is the angle between the fracture -plane normal and the stress axis. Similarly, a comprehensive investigation failed to verify the normal stress law for the tensile fracture of a-iron single crystals.&apos; However, a subsequent investigation,3 using iron from the same ingot, presented fracture data which obeyed the normal stress law. It has been shown previously4,5 that the Griffith criterion for fracture6 does not predict such a normal stress law. This result is of particular significance in considering the fracture of metals, such as zinc and iron, which may fail by cleavage. In these metals fracture propagates in a well-defined "cleavage" plane, whether or not an applied stress is normal to it. When the cleavage-plane normal deviates from the direction of application of a uniaxial stress, for example, the crack propagates under the combined action of normal (sN) and shear (ss) stresses. ANTHRACITE was first mined in the Wyoming Valley and sold as an article of commerce in 1808. As some preparation has always been necessary to make it ready to burn, the preparation of anthracite must date back over a hundred years. Two vital factors have determined to a large extent the degree and method of anthracite preparation. These are, first, the character of the beds worked and the methods by which they were mined and, second, the equipment used and practices followed in the burning of the coal. It is not the intention here to go deeply into these phases of preparation as a paper of no mean length could be prepared on the history of either. Rather, the intention here is to point out the main considerations and to show the influence they have exerted on the preparation of anthracite. MINING METHODS AND THEIR RELATION TO PREPARATION In the beginning f the nineteenth century, the coal beds were virgin with the possible exception of some outcroppings that had been worked, to a slight extent, by the Indians. It is known that the American aborigines had a knowledge of the use of this fuel, because when the Wyoming Valley was purchased from them, in 1754, they mentioned the fact that, by selling the land, they would lose their coal.

RiteR, Salt Lake City, Utah.—We have every reason to believe that oil flotation will soon come into general use as a final guard against slime losses in concentrating mills, not only in the case of zinc ores, but also in the case of other semi-precious ores. It also promises much as a primary process for the concentration of minerals that are not adapted to gravity methods. Moreover, modifications of the process involving selective or preferential flotation are gradually becoming understood, and will make it possible to eliminate pyrite and other minerals occurring as undesirable impurities in zinc concentrates. And what perhaps is of equal importance, further modifications promise an effective method of separating zinc blende from ores that are chiefly valuable for copper, lead, and precious metals, thereby making an asset out of zinc which has heretofore been a liability. The tendency of certain pulverized minerals to float on water, especially after having been in contact with grease, has been known to mill-men for a long time, and was formerly something to be deplored and to be striven against. All at once, this tendency has become a saving grace; and now, like tardy converts to a new faith, we are zealous advocates of something we once despised. I was once employed at a mine in the Tintic mining district of Utah— the old Eureka Hill property—where ores that were too low in value to warrant being sent to copper or lead smelters were treated in a combination mill. The ores contained gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc, manganese, arsenic, etc., in varying quantities and in varying mineral forms, mingled in a quartz and calcite gangue. The material was stamped fine and then concentrated on Frue vanners so as to make a smelting concentrate, after which the tailings were thickened and treated in amalgamating pans for the recovery of non-concentratable precious metals. In the amalgamating pans, under the influence of heat and agitation, a dark greasy froth or scum sometimes formed on the surface of the ore mixture. This froth or scum was composed mainly of mineral sulphides, and its occurrence might have meant only casual losses in the previous concentration, except that the phenomenon was accompanied by faulty amalgamation of the precious metals and by excessive losses in the mill tailings. Grease and oil, present by accident, were the cause of the trouble. Whether the intense vibration in the mill, due to the pounding of the heavy stamps, had caused small particles of grease to be shaken loose

The ductile fracturing process was studied in single-crystal and poly cvystalline aluminum deformed in tension over a temperature range from 295° to 4.2°K. At temperatures as low as 77°K, the fracture of "inclusion-free" material, including zone-refined aluminum, was by rupture (-100 pct RA). At 4.2 OK, fracture was brought on by adia-batic shear. Metallographic examination did not disclose any voids or slip-band microcracks, thus negating for inherently ductile metals any mechanism of void nucleation by vacancy condensation or of cracking due to dislocation pile-ups. In Izigh-purity aluminum not treated to be inclusion-free, fracture at temperatures as low as 45°K was of the double-cup type and a result of void formation. The reduction-of-area decreased as temperature was lowered, corresponding to the earlier appearance of voids. Such behavior was rationalized in terms of a larger increase, with decreasing temperature, in the .flow stress relative to the strength of the inclusion-matrix interface. Evidence for low-temperature adiabatic shear was found in discontinuous flow at 4.2"K, in the transition to a localized shear fracture at low temperatures, and in the suppression of shear fracture with an elastically hard pulling device. A simple analysis for the initiation of adiabatic shew permitted a general correlation of the various contributing factors. It has been pointed out that the duration of shear depends upon effective mass and elastic stiffness of the deformation system. Much information about ductile fracture has also been accumulated over this period, but only recently has an understanding of mechanism begun to appear. Ludwik,&apos; in 1926, first reported fracture in a tensile specimen starting with a central crack in the necked section. Since then, other studies have disclosed that such cracks may form by the coalescence of voids nucleated in this region where hydrostatic tension is highest.2-4 Rogers and Crussard et al.&apos; have emphasized void formation and reori-entation along localized shear bands as a mode of crack propagation. pines6 has considered the tensile rod as a bundle of fibers joined by weak interfaces, which subsequently separate to allow individual fiber contraction. The notion of cavity growth and coalescence by purely plastic processes was discussed by Cottrell: who added that the tensile reduction-of-area ought not to be sensitive to temperature. On the other hand, it has been observed that the reduction-of-area is greatly increased if tests are carried out at high temperaturesa or under high hydrostatic pressure.&apos; Fracturing anisotropy in wrought products lends support to the idea of void formation from preexisting flaws strongly aligned by earlier processing.&apos;&apos;-l2 There is evidence that many voids result from the fracturing of inclusions or separation at the inclusion-matrix interface Another possibility is that voids grow out of pore volume produced in the initial solidification and never fully removed in later working. In general, a structure 3f particles, pores, and weak interfaces can be expected, at least in materials of engineering interest. Vacancy condensation has been suggested as an alternative mechanism of void formation for materials considered to be inclusion-free.13 Yet experience has shown that tensile reduction-of-area increases with purity, to the extreme of rupture as so often observed in single crystals. Adiabatic shear has an important bearing on ductile fracture. It occurs when the decrease of flow stress, as a result of local temperature rise from heat generated during straining, becomes larger than the increase due to strain and strain-rate hardening. As demonstrated by experiments on punching of plates,14 a large temperature rise may be brought about by rapid straining. Adiabatic flow as a result of the high strain rate reached in an ordinary tensile specimen just prior to separation may account for the cone formation in cup-and-cone fracture;14 evidence of such local heating has been presented.15 For geometrical reasons, however, pure sliding along the conical surfaces is unlikely, and separation under tensile forces is probably an important accompanying feature of the shear.7 In deformation processing operations, a high shear-strain rate may exist at boundaries between plas-

Activities of iron in Fe-Pt alloys have been dctermined by equilibrating mixtures of platinum metal and iron oxide at known oxygen Pressures in a thermobalance at 1300°C. Conzpositions and iron activities of the oxide phase at equilibrium are known from previous work, and compositions of the Fe-Pt alloy phase formed at equilibrium were detcvt?zined from the observed weight changes of the samples. The activity curve obtained shows a strow negative deviation from Raoult&apos;s law. THE present investigation was undertaken as part of a research program dealing with phase equilibrium relations existing among the oxides of iron and titanium at 1300°C. At low oxygen pressures of the gas phase in equilibrium with these oxides, the iron activity of the system is high, and considerable alloying of iron with the platinum used as a container material takes place. Thermodynamic data for Fe-Pt alloys at 1300°C are needed in order to evaluate quantitatively the extent of such reactions. Larson and chipmanlhave determined activities of iron in Fe-Pt alloys at 1550°C by equilibrating platinum metal with CaO-iron oxide-SiOzmelts in which the iron activities were known. Compositions of the resulting Fe-Pt alloys were determined by chemical analysis. Mundiath and Gerassimov2 have studied thermodynamic properties of Fe-Pt alloys by electromotive force measurements in the temperature range 550" to 1000°C. The experimental method used in the present investigation is a slight modification of that used by Grube and Ratsch3 in studies of NiCr-alloys. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) General. Mixtures of platinum metal and iron oxide were equilibrated at 1300°C in atmospheres of known oxygzn przssures, and the course of the reactions was followed by measuring the weight changes of the mixtures. The principles involved in the derivation of composition-activity relations from these measurements are illustrated by the composition triangle for the system Fe-FeZO3-Pt shown in Fig. 1. Take as an example a mixture of FeZO3 (hematite) and platinum such that the total composition is represented by point T. If this mixture is heated to 1300c in air (poz = 0.21 atm) and the oxygen pressure is then reduced gradually, the oxygen content of the oxide phase decreases and increasing amounts of iron enter the metal phase. As the oxide phase and the metal phase for all practical purposes are insoluble in each other, their compositions are represented by points moving toward Fe along the joins Fe-Fe,03 and Fe-Pt, respectively. The total composition of the mixture during this process also changes, but only with respect to oxygen content, because the vapor pressures of iron and platinum are negligible at 1300°C. Hence the change in total composition is described by a straight line (constant Fe/Pt ratio) radiating from the 0 apex of the composition triangle Fe-Pt-0, of which the triangle in Fig. 1 is a part. Only one such line ("oxygen reaction line", T-T",) is shown in Fig. 1. The total composition of the alloy-iron oxide mixture at any instant must, in addition, be located on the straight line (conjugation line) connecting the two points representing the compositions of the two coexisting phases. It therefore follows that the total composition of the mixture at any instant is represented by the point of intersection between the conjugation line and the oxygen reaction line. An example of the situation prevailing at a chosen oxygen pressure, po2, is shown in Fig. 1 by points a&apos; (alloy composition), b&apos; (oxide composition) and T&apos; (total composition). Point b&apos; is known from the work of Darken and Gurry,4 and point T&apos; is experimentally determined by the observed weight change of the mixture (distance T-T). Hence, point a&apos;, the composition of the alloy, is determined from the above data as the intersection between the join Pt-Fe and the extension of the straight line bl-7&apos;. RECENTLY, cases of coexisting ordered and disordered phase equilibria have been reported among face-centered cubic metals,1"3 but not on body-centered cubic systems.4 McQueen and Kuczynski5 showed a single line as the boundary between ordered solid solution of Fe3Al type and corresponding disordered solution in the Fe-A1 phase diagram based mainly on dilatometric and magnetic measurements. Such a single line would indicate a second or higher order transition. or an absence of coexisting order and disorder. The writer found previously a two-phase equilibrium region at 800°C consisting of ordered and disordered solid solutions of Fe3Si in a matrix of approximately 1-6 wt pct Si (Fe3Si is of 14.3 wt pct Si). A similar two-phase region of ordered and disordered Fe3Al solid solutions might be expected if the similarity between Fe3Si and Fe3Si structures hold true. In the present investigation, a wire of 22 at. pct Al, balance Fe and 0.0513 cm in diameter was subjected to electrical resistivity measurement in vacuum as a function of temperature between 300 and 800°C, see Fig. 1. There was excellent agreement between data taken on heating and on cooling: no hysteresis was observed. The Curie temperature was determined to be 640 °C which agrees with the finding by McQueen and Kuczynski.5 But in addition, there were two transitional points in the resistance-temperature plot at 510oC and 400 "C. The former is thought to be a connection with the transition from disordered state to a coexisting order and disordered equilibrium state; while the latter, from such coexisting state to ordered state. Fig. 2 shows a phase diagram where the suggested two-phase region lies between dotted lines. The solid lines are those of McQueen and Kuczynski.5 Since these authors found only a single-phase boundary between ordered and disordered Fe3 Al, it would seem likely that the dilatometric method used by these authors was not sufficiently sensitive to resolve the ordering reaction into the two-phase boundaries. In addition, their phase diagram conflicts with the statement they make on P. 1 of their paper: "The sharpness of the peaks indicates that ordering to Fe3A1 is a first order reaction." The suggestion of coexisting order plus disorder in Fe3A1 must be considered tentative until confirmed by high-temperature X-ray examination. If

BEFORE the war we often heard the term "Big Business." And there were complaints of the ills and abuses attributed to bigness in business. Although there were examples where the small businessmen spoke for their rights and sought protection from the bigger ones, it has only been in recent war years that a tendency has developed definitely to divide the business of our nation into the big and the small. In some cases, those with an eye to the political value of the vastly greater number of small businessmen of the country have fomented this division by hurrying to the protection of these more numerous voters, and intentionally or not have emphasized in their writings and verbal attacks any and all differences of these interests that could either be found or fabricated to, suit the occasion. It has become another example of breaking the people into classes and thus setting up the basis for the claims of one class against another, and the subsequent demand for legislation and Governmental aid. The terms "big" and "small" are purely relative. One businessman, employing a hundred men, told me recently he did not know which adjective would be more appropriately applied to his operation. He did not know whether he should join the small operators&apos; group that had been organized, or should consider himself big. He said that his present plant seemed big to him when he looked back to its humble beginning many years ago with a couple of men in two rooms. Yet, when compared with many of his competitors who employ thousands, his was small. He did add, however, that he probably became big one day a few years ago when the union moved in and organized his employees.
