A series of cross-hole acoustic measurements have been performed in a columnar-jointed basaltic rock mass around an underground opening mined by the drill-and-blast method. The purposes of the test program were: to evaluate the rock mass characteristics around the opening; to determine the zone of blast damage; and to evaluate seismic methods for anomaly detection ahead of mining in this type of rock. The cross-hole measurements were made between four 76-mm diameter horizon- tal boreholes diamond-drilled 12 m into a wall of the underground opening. Repetitive pulses of compressional (P) and shear (S) waves of frequencies in the range 3 kHz-100 kHz were propagated from a transmitter sonde through the rock mass to a receiver sonde, both of which were clamped hydraulically to the borehole wall. After amplification the received P- and S-wave signals were digitized at the surface by a digital oscilloscope and stored on floppy discs. The results indicate considerable reductions in P- and S-wave velocities at distances less than 2 m from the face. Clearly these low values are associated with blast damage. Beyond 2 m, the velocities in a vertical direction indicate almost constant values. The velocities in the horizontal direction beyond 2 m appeared erratic, but showed a general tendency to increase as a function of distance from the face. Their maximum values remained, however, still lower in value than the corresponding velocities in the vertical direction. Near the face, the differences in velocities were considerably greater: with horizontal velocities considerably lower in value than those vertical. Results of the spectral analyses of the received signals indicated that Q-values were strongly influenced by the vertically- oriented sets of joints. Only for waves travelling in the vertical direction was the effect observed of the blast-damaged zone immediately around the opening. The acoustic data obtained are clearly indicative of an anisotropic jointed rock mass, with a greater intensity of jointing for travel paths in the horizontal than the vertical direction. The vertical, columnar joints are probably less tightly closed than those oriented in the horizontal plane.

DRILLING wildcat wells in Wyoming differs a little from methods used in any other field. Here it is always advisable to start the hole as large as is convenient in order to carry each string of pipe as far as possible, so that drilling can be continued a thousand feet deeper if necessary, as there is always sand a few hundred feet ahead that really ought to be tested. This plan may seem ambitious, but if it is adhered to, it will save a great deal of trouble before the well is completed. In making the location, one representative from the operating department and one from the geological department should work together, so that the well may be in the best possible place for obtaining oil and the most feasible place to drill for the operating department. In Wyoming nearly all wells are drilled with standard tools, as with them a better log can be kept and better time made in completing the hole. The shales of Wyoming are very hard and do not mix well in a wet hole. The shale cuts into large pieces, too large to be circulated out of the hole, and forms a mat on the rotary which soon cuts off circulation. Then if this mat cannot be jarred from the bit, the drilling string has to be pulled and the mat cut off from the bit with a pick or an axe. I have seen standard tools come out of a wet hole with 10 to 16 in. of mat on the bottom of the bit. Rotary tools have drilled wells satisfactorily in the Big Muddy field and at Billy Creek, but in the other fields the wells have been drilled much more economically with cable tools.

THE outstanding fact of the mineral world today, at home and abroad, is the surplus of current production, and particularly of capacity for production, over current requirements. This is not by Any means a new condition, but never before has it loomed up in such' menacing form. - Those of us who have devoted most of our professional efforts to the discovery and development of 'new mineral supplies now suddenly find ourselves with the job apparently accomplished, waiting for some one else to find an outlet for excess mineral production before we can further. The management of the industry is in much the same boat. The psjrcho16gy of the industry has been so grooved in the direction of acquisition of, minerals that at the present moment the mineral industry confronts the new problem of surplus in more or less of a daze.

MEASUREMENTS of gravity with gravimeters have come into increased use in this country and abroad in the past five years. Probably 100 to 125 gravimeter parties are working in the United States alone. In oil exploration, gravimeter methods have relegated the gravity pendulum definitely to second place, if not third, and now closely rival and possibly surpass the torsion balance in many applications. Gravimeters have lately been applied in mining, although it is doubtful whether they will ever replace electrical or magnetic methods in this work. Notwithstanding the widespread application of gravimeters, there has been no article covering the entire field in the domestic or foreign literature. The purpose of this paper is to meet the demand for com-prehensive engineering information on the subject. The working principles of a number of gravimeters will be, illustrated and treated in relation to the action of corresponding seismometers and astatization methods. The mathematical discussion of theory has been confined to the most necessary fundamentals and been given in as ele-mentary form as possible. A description of calibration methods con-stitutes the last part of the paper. The symbols shown at the top of page 2 will be used in equations throughout the paper.

A mass transfer coefficient for the removal of hydrogen from liquid aluminum by inert flush degassing has been determined experimentally at 700°C. A mathematical model has been derived, assuming transport control, which adequately describes the experimental data. The removal of hydrogen is shown to increase with decreasing bubble size, and with increasing flow of flushing gas. The presence of hydrogen in liquid metals in amounts which exceed the solid solubility at one atmosphere hydrogen pressure is highly undesirable, causing unsound ingots or castings, or resulting in difficulties during further fabrication. The removal of hydrogen from liquid metals can be accomplished by several methods, the principal two being vacuum treating and inert flush degassing. The design of a process involving either of these techniques is based on the mass transfer coefficient for hydrogen between the liquid metal and a hydrogen-dilute gas phase. In an effort to extend our knowledge in this area, an investigation of the rate of removal of hydrogen from liquid metals by inert gas flushing was undertaken. In view of the difficulties encountered with gas porosity in the casting of aluminum and aluminum alloys, and because of certain experimental advantages, liquid aluminum was selected for the study. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS The removal of gases from liquid metals, particularly steel, has received considerable attention in recent years, The first definitive work of a theoretical nature was presented by Geller1 who considered the case where equilibrium exists between purging gases and metal bath during flushing, and also deviations from this ideal case. Hulme2 has surveyed a number of experimental studies and discussed some of the practical limitations of removing dissolved gases from molten metals. More recently a number of studies have been reported on degassing of steel melts by flushing with an inert gas.3'4 Considerable work has also been reported on aqueous and organic liquid-gas systems, and an excellent summary prepared by Hovis.5 The treatment of liquid aluminum by a flushing gas to remove dissolved hydrogen has been known for several decades.6 A number of gases have been used for this purpose, including nitrogen, argon, and chlorine, or mixtures of these gases. WHAT are the chief branches of the mining engineering profession today? In an effort to analyze the structure of the profession, for practical purposes, a quantitative study has been made of the membership of the A.I.M.E., and is herein reported for the first time. In spite of the effect that a long history and a relatively small group of professional workers have had in limiting specialization in mining engineering, there has nevertheless grown up a wide variety of specialties in this field. More than a hundred different kinds of engineers were discovered among the titles given by Institute members in the Directory, ranging from "advisory engineer" and "American engineer" down to "wire-rope engineer" and "works engineer." How should all these titles be defined and interpreted? How many of them should be relegated as meaningless or confusing? What are the relationships among the remaining useful designations? Should some of them be grouped as "metallurgical" or "chemical," or under some other head?

AN excerpt from the Alabama State Mining Law, pertaining to, transporting men' into and out of the mines, reads as follows: "A trip of empty cars may be operated for the purpose of taking employees into and out of the mine, where the distance to and from their work exceeds one mile." The State Mining Department of Alabama includes in its inspection the transportation of men into and out of the mines, also studying and noting improvements, or progress made, that would tend to create a greater assurance of safety in this practice. Everyone is familiar with the original safety methods employed in man-trip transportation, such as passing a rope around the trip of cars, or through the cars, fastened in the conventional manner, and with the usual "clog," commonly called a drag, on the rear end. Also there is a more advanced method of transporting men, such as the double-rope system, which is feasible on slopes used exclusively for this purpose, and is very satisfactory. THE Eastern Magnetite Industry produced approximately 7,850,000 long tons of crude ore in 1945 from which was obtained approximately 3,650,000 long tons of shipping product or a ratio of 2.10 to 1. Lack of skilled or experienced miners was the greatest handicap. Veterans returning to work improved the underground labor shortage in some localities but as a whole the labor shortage was keenly felt throughout the industry. One cannot now predict what may be accomplished in 1946 but barring major steel strikes a worthwhile improvement can be expected. At the Richard mine of the Richard Ore Co., the shipping product for the year amounted to approximately 124,650 long tons of concentrate and lump ore. Crude-ore production was 160,600 long tons. The average analysis for lump ore was 63 per cent iron and for concentrates 66.05 per cent. The Warren Foundry and Pipe Corp. at their Mt. Hope mine produced 73,000 long tons of lump ore averaging 59.5 per cent and 57,000 long tons of concentrate averaging 67 per cent. The total mine hoist was approximately 209,000 long tons. Operations were commenced through the new Leonard shaft on Jan. 18; the Brown shaft through which operations had been conducted since 1912 caved beyond repair on Sept. 26. No one was injured but pumping facilities were somewhat disrupted. In order to reach designed capacity a total of 400 men will be required with 300 underground. Due to shortage of labor all operations in 1945 were concentrated on the 1700 level. As fast as men can be hired and trained development of the 2100 and 2500 levels will commence. Mt. In June, 1893, while I was with the Old Dominion Copper Co. at Globe, Ariz., I received an offer to take charge, as manager, of the Baltimore Electric? Refining Co. which had recently built a plant at Baltimore, Md., having a capacity of about 1200 tons of electrolytic copper per month, using the Hayden series system. This was a very large output, for in those days the plants were small and the art was in its infancy. At the beginning of 1893 there were 11 electrolytic refineries in the United States, most of them using the multiple system. The Hayden series system was used at Baltimore and Bridgeport and the Smith series system was in operation at the Electrolytic Copper Co. at Ansonia, COM., and at the Pennsylvania Salt Co. at Philadelphia. In the latter system the plates were placed in a horizontal position, but the operating difficulties were so numerous it was soon discarded. The total production of these 11 plants in 1892 was very small; I have not been able to discover reliable figures of production. A physical law, governing the rupture of rock by confined explosive charge correspondent to current expressions for determining weight of charge to rupture rock burden, W, was developed in the form Q = cVw3 by two early investigators performing unique experiments with ice. The coefficient C, is found by trial blast. Recent physical tests conducted with rock, synthetic materials and ice to establish the validity of the theory on which it and other related formulae are based indicated: (a) that failure under hydrodynamic impact pressure is by tension rather than shear as was assumed; (b) that the fundamental law of mechanics, enabling the determination of Q = cvw3, modified to the form P = R x Sa x Wb is valid when low velocity explosives are used; (c) that rock breakage under the action of low velocity explosives is entirely due to explosion gas pressure, as was believed; (d) that under the action of high velocity explosive it is due to the joint effects of scabbing and gas pressure; and that further possible modification could make the above equation also applicable to these joint mechanisms. shape could be easily frozen and because large loads would not be required. They found: (a) that the not unfamiliar shearing equation for metals was applicable to ice where P = load in lb; S = periphery of pressure surface, in.; W = burden, in.; K = modulus of rupture by shear in lb per in.2; and (b) that "the form of cavity produced by the application of gradual pressure is similar to that obtained by blasting in rock under similar conditions of free face and pressure surface!" This similarity in crater shapes leads to the conclusion that rock would rupture by shear, as did ice, and its behavior under the force of a blast could be governed by such a relationship as P = S x W x K. Three important interrelated empirical expressions were derived and rock, charging and spacing coefficients C,, C, and e were established and substantiated by trial blasts. In checking the accuracy of the main assumptions, duplication of the ice tests, substituting rock, suggested that K is not constant and that P = K x W x S, though valid for ice, does not necessarily hold for homogeneous limestone.' Conclusions from this later work raised questions making continued investigation desirable because such conclusions do not destroy the practical value of the empirical equations or theory. Further study for the establishment of the relationship between load, burden and periphery of the pressure surface and possible application of these to the mechanism of rock blasting was undertaken by the authors of this paper. MECHANICAL TESTING - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Certain inconsistencies in the results of the aforementioned tests repeated on three types of limestone suggested these inconsistencies be attributed to rock inhomogeneity. In September, 1975, production was begun at the new milling facility of ASARCO Incorporated, the Young Mill. The mill is located adjacent to the Young Mine 35 km (22 miles) east of Knoxville, Tennessee. The Young Mill replaced the obsolete Mascot Mill which had been operating since 1913. The basic flow sheet of Mascot was retained for the construction of the Young Mill, with a 20% increase in capacity included in the design. The Young Mill is capable of processing 7710 - t/d (8500 stpd) of crude ore from three underground mines (Young, Immel and Coy) yielding 300 - t/d (330 stpd) of 63% zinc concentrate. The Young Mill is unique in that 92.5% of the ore milled is recovered as saleable products, including zinc concentrate, construction aggregate, sand and agricultural limestone. Processing at the Young Mill is divided into five basic stages: two-stage crushing, heavy media separation, grinding-flotation, concentrate filtering and drying, and limestone by-products recovery. The ore bodies are located in the Knox formation, which consists of primary dolomite, secondary dolomite and limestone with silicas in the form of chert and jasperoid. The zinc mineralization occurs as an exceptionally pure sphalerite. The ore contains an occasional abundance of pyrite and traces of fluorite and barite. TWO STAGE CRUSHING Ore enters the crushing section from two points. The Young Mine ore is hoisted into a 816 ton (900 st) bin which feeds a 1.52m (60 in) conveyor via a 1.52 m (60 in) vibrating feeder. The Immel ore is trucked 10 km (6 miles) by an independent contractor and weighed on automatic recording truck scales at the entrance to the property.

A GENERAL awakening of interest among mill men concerning the mechanical efficiencies of their crushing machines is evident from a perusal of the recent files of mining publications. Considering the large part of the power bill which must be debited to the crushing department, such. interest is natural. When, however, the articles on the subject are read, the only statement upon which the writers agree is that fine grinding consumes a large amount of power, and that the machine which, from a concentration standpoint, offends as a slime producer is, for that reason, a serious offender in wasting power. When the mill man attempts to find a method for measuring the power wasted, or to compare the efficiency of one machine with that of another for the same work, he is confronted with a choice of methods which lead to conflicting results. There are two reasons why the work of crushing is not more generally understood. In the first place, experimental data are difficult to obtain; and in the second place, before these data can be put in general form certain assumptions must be made. A difference in these assumptions by different investigators has led to conflicting conclusions. This conflict has resulted in the proposal of two laws. The first of these is the so-called Rittinger's law, which is variously stated as follows: . "The work of crushing is proportional to the reduction in diameter."-R. H. Richards: Ore Dressing, p. 304 (1903). "The Work required to crush rock is very nearly proportional to the reciprocals of .the diameters crushed to."-A. Del Mar: Engineering and Mining Journal, vol. xciv, No. 24, p. 1129 (Dec. 14, 1912). Determination of the Hf-C phase diagram was conducted primarily by metallographic and X-ray diffraction studies on appropriate alloys. The only intermediate phase observed in this binary system was HfC. This phase was found to be homogeneous between 34.0 and 48.0 at. pct C at 2200°c and between 36.0 and 49.3 at. pct C at 3150°C. The lattice-parameter variation was also determined for HfCI-, compositions prepared at 2200° and 3150°C. The most most refractory composition, with a melting point of 3830°c, was established at 47.5 at. pct C from melting-point data. Solidus temperatures of 2240' and 3150°C occur on the high-kafnium and high-carbon sides of the monocarbide, respectively. The invariant point between HfC and carbon is located at 66.0 at. pct C, whereas the 2240°C solidus corresponds to the peritectic temperature at which hafnium is formed from HfC and hafnium-rick liquid. Hafnium has a melting temperature of 2208°C and is capable of taking carbon into solution to the extent of 10.5 at. pct at this temperature. ALTHOUGH the Hf-C phase diagram has not been previously evaluated experimentally in its entirety, the belief has been that the general configuration would resemble the chemically similar Group rV carbide systems, Ti-C and Zr-c.' These binaries are characterized by a single carbide phase with a simple NaC1-type structure which is maintained over wide compositional ranges. This family of carbides has high thermal stability that increases substantially as the atomic number of the metal component increases. This trend characterizes HfC as one of the highest melting materials. According to Agte and Alterthum,2 the melting point for this monocarbide is 3890°C, a value that has been quoted quite extensively for the past several decades. Recently, in repeating the work of Agte and Alter-thum, Adams and Beall3 determined the melting point of HfC to be 3895°C. A significant departure from the commonly accepted version of the Hf-C system was reported by Avarbe and his coworkers,4 who proposed that there is an extreme stabilization of a hafnium in a narrow field to 2820°C, above which it melts peritectically to form HfC and liquid. Their study was also concerned with the melting temperature of various HfCI-, compositions, but the peak melting point was taken from the work of Agte and Alterthum. Avarbe and his associates were not concerned with the high-carbon region of the system. However, three widely varying temperatures have been reported for the HfC-C solidus by other investigators. Cotter and Kohn5 observed approximately 2800°C; Portnoy et al.' reported 3260°C; and, more recently, Krikorian7 indicated 2915°C. Equally as uncertain is the solidus between hafnium and HfC. As noted above, Avarbe et al. report a peritectic temperature of 2820°C, Krikorian7 measured 2150°C, and Benesovsky and Rudy' estimated 2000°C on their diagram. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials for this study consisted of reactor-grade hafnium hydride obtained from Fair-mount Chemical Co., Newark, N.J., hafnium carbide supplied by Wah Chang Corp., Albany, Ore., and Union Carbide spectroscopic-grade graphite, SP-1. The graphite analysis indicated impurities at levels of only 0.5 ppm or less. According to the suppliers, the hydride and carbide contained the typical impurities listed in Table I. The samples required for these studies were prepared by dry blending either graphite and hafnium hydride or hafnium hydride and hafnium carbide powders for approximately 5 min in a "Spex Mixer Mill". THERE are two conditions generally prevailing upon the earth-those within atmospheric influence, tending towards oxidation, and those away from atmospheric influence, tending towards reduction. Practically all mineral substances from mines of any depth are in a reducing condition. Since the cyanide process, in order to dissolve silver or gold, requires that the prevailing conditions under which it operates shall be oxidizing, and the materials usually acted upon being of a reducing character, it becomes necessary to supply oxygen to the solution carrying the cyanide. This oxygen is usually supplied through the medium of dissolved air in the solution, or through the medium of various chemical compounds, which upon combining with the solution or the ore give off a part of their oxygen. Strange as it may seem, practically all mineral substances are partly soluble in water, especially water carrying alkali or cyanide. The greater the surface exposed and the finer the material is ground, the greater will be the rate of dissolving of the reducing agents from the ore into the cyanide solution. In most cases, if the solution carrying the ore particles is agitated with air, the air will dissolve into the solution faster than will the reducing-agents; but in some cases the reducing-agents will dissolve more rapidly on account of easy solubility or greater surface exposed. It is a dissolving race between the oxygen from the air and the reducing-agents from the ore, and if the reducing-agents predominate, cyanide will not dissolve the gold from the ore. In many cases it will dissolve some of the gold, because in a mass of irregular shape some of the gold particles might be exposed upon the outside surface of a particle of rock;' but if the solution had to penetrate through cracks, the side-walls of which were lined with reducing-agent-

WASTE of coal, or perhaps more properly the percentage of its recovery in mining, has keenly interested me during an experience of over a half century in coal mining. In the early part of that time and until a few ears after World War I the use of better mining plans and supervision resulted in an increased recovery. Since then, and particularly since controlled prices have been effective and mechanized mining has been extensively practiced, the tendency has all been toward lesser recovery in mining. The purpose of this paper is not to criticize the methods being used, which after all are the result of economic forces, nor to point to any particular mining method or to any locality where the best recovery is obtained. but to call attention to the tremendous waste of our national coal resources that is constantly continuing. A possible method of reducing this loss will be suggested. but without any illusions that it will be followed or that much attention will be paid to it.

As a preliminary, consicleration is given to the conventional definition of relative permeability and to the conditions governing the simultaneous flow of oil and gas through porous media. For the conditions of flow prevailing throughout most of a gas drive reservoir, the oil and gas can reasonably be supposed to be in capillary equilibrium with each other. Under these conditions, and these conditions only, the relative permeability to liquid can be expressed as a function of saturation. The relative permeability to liquid in that case is dependent upon the distribution of fluids which itself is shown to be related to the capillary pressure, and, in turn, to the saturation. As a consequence, relative permeability to liquid can be expressed in terms of the volume and surface area of a network of liquid channels bounded by the rock and the gas phase. While the volume of this network can be evaluated accurately, the surface area cannot. However, for any such volume, maximum and minimum values of the corresponding surface area can be calculated from capillary pressure data. It is then possible to establish for any saturation the limits within which the value of the relative permeability to liquid must lie. As a consequence of the theoretical development, the validity of an experimental method for measuring relative permeability to liquid which utilizes a stationary gas phase is demonstrated. In this method capillary barriers are cemented to the ends of the core sample to permit the maintenance of capillary equilibrium between the two phases. At the same time, this procedure eliminates undesirable secondary phenomena such as end effects, fissure effects, etc., the presence of which adversely affect the results of other laboratory methods. The results obtained by theoretical calculations, and experimentally, are discussed. In view of the overall precision that can presently be obtained in reservoir calculations, the agreement between the calculated and measured relative permeability to liquid data can be considered satisfactory. In conclusion, for reasons of economy and simplicity, the procedure of calculating limiting relative permeability to liquid curves from capillary pressure data is indicated for general engineering purposes. It is shown that the above procedure can easily be extended to the cases where connate water is present. Its use for reservoir studies is particularly recommended in conjunction with the method for measuring relative permeability to gas' which simultaneously yields the capillary pressure data necessary for the calculations. According to these expressions, each of the constituent phases is considered similar to a homogeneous system where the volumetric rate of flow is proportional to the pressure gradient, and for each of which the constants of proportionality, k, and kG, are termed effective permeabilities. by analogy to the specific permeability as defined by Darcy's law in its original form. In order to obtain a convenient basis of comparison, the effective permeabilities are referred to the specific permeability, k, of the considered porous medium, with the help of the relations: k1. = KI. k kQ = Kn k..........(2) K,. and Kr. are defined as the relative permeabilities to the liquid and to the gas phase respectively, and frequently expressed in per cent of specific permeability. It may be seen that Equations (1); which appear to be a direct generalization of Darcy's law, correspond to the assignment at any given time of a set of "local" permeabilities to each point of the porous medium, and represent in a differential form the two fluid flow system as a simple superposition of the individual single flow systems. As a preliminary, consicleration is given to the conventional definition of relative permeability and to the conditions governing the simultaneous flow of oil and gas through porous media. For the conditions of flow prevailing throughout most of a gas drive reservoir, the oil and gas can reasonably be supposed to be in capillary equilibrium with each other. Under these conditions, and these conditions only, the relative permeability to liquid can be expressed as a function of saturation. The relative permeability to liquid in that case is dependent upon the distribution of fluids which itself is shown to be related to the capillary pressure, and, in turn, to the saturation. As a consequence, relative permeability to liquid can be expressed in terms of the volume and surface area of a network of liquid channels bounded by the rock and the gas phase. While the volume of this network can be evaluated accurately, the surface area cannot. However, for any such volume, maximum and minimum values of the corresponding surface area can be calculated from capillary pressure data. It is then possible to establish for any saturation the limits within which the value of the relative permeability to liquid must lie. As a consequence of the theoretical development, the validity of an experimental method for measuring relative permeability to liquid which utilizes a stationary gas phase is demonstrated. In this method capillary barriers are cemented to the ends of the core sample to permit the maintenance of capillary equilibrium between the two phases. At the same time, this procedure eliminates undesirable secondary phenomena such as end effects, fissure effects, etc., the presence of which adversely affect the results of other laboratory methods. The results obtained by theoretical calculations, and experimentally, are discussed. In view of the overall precision that can presently be obtained in reservoir calculations, the agreement between the calculated and measured relative permeability to liquid data can be considered satisfactory. In conclusion, for reasons of economy and simplicity, the procedure of calculating limiting relative permeability to liquid curves from capillary pressure data is indicated for general engineering purposes. It is shown that the above procedure can easily be extended to the cases where connate water is present. Its use for reservoir studies is particularly recommended in conjunction with the method for measuring relative permeability to gas' which simultaneously yields the capillary pressure data necessary for the calculations. According to these expressions, each of the constituent phases is considered similar to a homogeneous system where the volumetric rate of flow is proportional to the pressure gradient, and for each of which the constants of proportionality, k, and kG, are termed effective permeabilities. by analogy to the specific permeability as defined by Darcy's law in its original form. In order to obtain a convenient basis of comparison, the effective permeabilities are referred to the specific permeability, k, of the considered porous medium, with the help of the relations: k1. = KI. k kQ = Kn k..........(2) K,. and Kr. are defined as the relative permeabilities to the liquid and to the gas phase respectively, and frequently expressed in per cent of specific permeability. It may be seen that Equations (1); which appear to be a direct generalization of Darcy's law, correspond to the assignment at any given time of a set of "local" permeabilities to each point of the porous medium, and represent in a differential form the two fluid flow system as a simple superposition of the individual single flow systems. The surface tension of solid silver is measured by a refinement of the Udin, Shaler, and Wulff technique. The tests were made in a purified helium atmosphere at four different temperatures and various times. The average of the results is y = 1140 + 90 dynes per cm for the range 875° to 932°C. A SUCCESSFUL measurement of the surface tension of solid copper was reported by Udin, Shaler, and Wulff.' They performed experiments on copper held in vacuum within 100°C of the melting point. At these temperatures, the creep rate in 5 and 3 mil copper wires was sufficient to permit determination of a balance between the contractile force of surface tension and the extending force of small copper weights joined to the end of the wire specimens. By suspending a series of variously weighted specimens and measuring the change in a gage length during the test, the balancing applied load could be found. This point of zero strain is a measure of the surface tension. The mathematical formulation of this gives: w = r y [1] where w is the weight for zero strain; r, the radius of the wire; and y, the surface tension. CANADIAN gold production is forging ahead annually and the prospects are that it will continue to do so for many years. Table 1 shows recent annual increases. Production for 1933 will probably reach $70,000,000, and further increases are likely in 1934 and 1935. (Data for November and December, 1932, are estimated throughout this article.) The depression sent many prospectors to the woods so during the last two years many new gold areas have been discovered and are attracting real capital for exploration and development. Several mills came into production in 1932 and mills now under construction will start production in 1933. The offices of mining lawyers are busy. Capital for this new work is obtained from well financed mining companies, syndicates, and individuals who were fortunate enough to invest in the dividend-paying gold mines of the north country in the early days. Prospectors and capital are cooperating. An interest is always retained by the prospector or vender and usually a small amount of real money is given the prospector.

THAT the copper industry is in serious straits is admitted. So are the lead and zinc industries, and both lead and zinc are tariff protected. Conditions in the Western lead, zinc and silver mining districts are desperate. These are illustrated by the present disastrously low prices of these metals compared with the levels of two and three years ago and by the comparative rates of metal production and the present activity of the western mining camps. The January production of copper was 32.2 per cent of the 1929 average rate, of steel was 32.3 per cent of the 1929 average, while January production of pig iron was only 27.6 per cent of the monthly average of 1929. The copper industry is only one of many industries that are suffering in this tragic depression. It has been exceedingly prosperous and will be prosperous again when business recovers. Its difficulties are not unique and it does not deserve the tariff equivalent of a dole. The burden of subsidizing through an effective tax or tariff the minority group of high-cost mines would be a heavy one on the consuming public of the United States. On the basis of 1929 consumption figures, an effective 5c. tariff would result in an increased copper bill to the country of over $109,000,000, of which the electric manufacturers would contribute $26,000,000, the telephone and telegraph companies $16,000,000, and the automobile manufacturers $14,000,000. And of this total bill, only $33,000,000 would go to those who are urging a tariff and the balance of $76,000,000 would be paid to those who do not admit either its necessity or usefulness under present conditions.
