The results of an inquiry into the structural nature of some 70 iron alloys containing both nickel and chromium over a considerable range of concentration are briefly described in this paper. This study is a part of a comprehensive program of investigation into alloys involving chromium in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research 1aboratories. All the compositions studied contained carbon in amount comparable to commercial alloys. The B Constituent In addition to locating the limits of composition for the three principal types of structure (polyhedral ferrite, martensite and austenite) and their combinations, certain other features of the system were observed. A hitherto undescribed brittle constituent (designated here as the "B constituent") was discovered. It is very hard, non-magnetic and forms in two modes from chrome-ferrite by recrystallization. It is the stable low-temperature condition for the equal-proportion chromium-iron materials containing less than 10 per cent. nickel. Although it partakes of the nature of an inter-metallic compound, yet it may exist over a considerable range of composition. It is non-existent above a temperalure zone, varying with composition, from 800° C. to 950° C., and heating above this critical temperature develops chrome ferrite persistent after average cooling rate; a few hours just below this temperature will develop the complicated brittle crystalline type. The B constituent, when found in the grain boundaries of alloys of lower chromium content, contributes a serious brittleness removable, however, by heating and cooling rapid enough to prevent its re-format'ion. By suitable means of precipitution, the hard B constituent can be made to strengthen the already stiff alloy matrix in the manner of submicro-scopic particles, as exemplified in duralumin or the Sykes iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys. When a hole is made in a stressed solid, such as rock pierced by mine openings, equilibrium of the solid is destroyed. To restablish that equilibrium the stress condition in the rock surrounding the opening becomes rearranged. This rearrangement may or may not develop local stresses in the vicinity of the opening which exceed the elastic strength of the rock. Since stability of the opening depends, therefore, on the strength of the naturally occurring rock surrounding the opening, this rock is an engineering material of construction, and all rock affected by the associated opening or system of openings may be considered a structure. The term invert is chosen to describe the formation of the structure built from the inside, as it were, and a consequence of mining rather than an entity built for a purpose. By definition, an invert structure is formed when openings are made underground and is com- posed of that material on the solid side of a rock-air interface wherein the stress condition is affected by the associated opening or system of openings. The shape of an invert structure is never clearly defined; the skin of the structure may be mapped, and even described, but the boundary of the structure within the solid rock mass must be arbitrarily set.

INTRODUCTION Surface mining and in situ leaching of uranium have the potential to alter ground-water quality around mines and leach sites. Of particular concern is the fate of uranium and its associated trace elements: molybdenum, arsenic, and selenium. We wish to under- stand the natural processes that control trace element concentrations in ground water and how these processes will influence dispersion of the elements from a mineralized zone, both naturally and during and after mining or restoration. For example, it is commonly recognized that the trace elements are soluble in oxidizing ground water but are insoluble, and can be precipitated, in reducing ground water. Thus oxidizing, metal-bearing water leaving a deposit could re- enter reduced ground, causing the water to be re- reduced and the trace elements to be, reprecipitated. In a sense, this is recreating the original mineralization process. To accomplish the above goals, we have (1) examined the theoretical controls of concentrations based on the available geochemical and thermodynamic data, (2) determined the major ion composition and oxidation-reduction status of Oakville waters because of the influence of these factors on trace element solubility, and (3) determined trace element concentrations and distribution in Oakville ground water. The last approach is used to evaluate how well actual behavior follows predicted behavior. This report focuses on two elements, uranium and molybdenum, because they exemplify the results obtained. The report also is restricted to a regional study of Oakville ground water. Results of more de- tailed study in and around major uranium districts in the Oakville and much of the raw data that support the conclusions in this report are presented in Galloway, Henry and Smith (1980). This report is part of that larger study, which concerned the depositional systems, hydrology, and geochemistry of the Oakville. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded the study, under grant numbers R-805357-01 and R-805357-02. Theoretical controls were determined by reviewing the available literature on aqueous chemistry and behavior of uranium and molybdenum. To aid in under- standing water chemistry, Oakville water analyses were run through a modified version of the computer model WATEQF (Plumer, Jones, and Truesdell, 1976). WATEQF calculates speciation of dissolved ions and determines saturation with respect to a variety of minerals. In the discussion below, ion activity products (IAP) are compared with the equilibrium constant (KT) for various reactions and mineral products. Values of log IAP/KT near zero indicate that the water is in equilibrium with a mineral. Values less than -1 indicate considerable undersaturation and values greater than +1 indicate oversaturation. Galloway, Henry, and Smith (1980) give a more complete discussion of the application of this approach to Oakville water chemistry. Eh-pH diagrams have been constructed or adapted from the literature to predict what form -- dissolved ion or stable mineral species -- uranium and molybdenum assume under various conditions. Construction of the diagrams has followed procedures described by Garrels and Christ (1965). This approach is particularly appropriate because the solubility of the elements is Eh-dependent, and Eh varies greatly within the Oakville aquifer. A number of assumptions or approximations are inherent in the use of Eh-pH diagrams and chemical models such as WATEQF and in the interpretation of water chemistry in general. Both Eh-pH diagrams and chemical modeling rely entirely upon available thermo- dynamic data, including free energies of formation and dissociation constants for various reactions. These values are known to varying degrees of accuracy. Most major ions and minerals are relatively well control- led; however, data for trace metals are much poorer. Thermodynamic data are not available for some minerals, and for other minerals, two or more divergent values exist. By necessity, we have relied on the judgment of others to evaluate thermodynamic data. Calculations by WATEQF and constructions of Eh-pH diagrams are based on an assumption of equi1ibrium. Equilibrium may not be comnon in low-temperature aqueous environments; at best, ground-water composi tion may be in a state of dynamic equilibrium, continuously changing due to changes in environmental conditions. Eh-pH diagrams show what phases are stable at equilibrium under given conditions; they do not prove that the phases actually exist. Many minerals persist or form metastably under conditions outside their equilibrium stability field. The kinetics of reactions, which cannot be evaluated here, are important in determining what phases occur. Kinetics may be less of a problem for ground water that travels and evolves slowly through a semihomogeneous matrix than for many other natural systems. Eh-pH diagrams show equilibrium fields only of phases included. They do not indicate anything about stability relative to phases not included in the diagram. WATEQF, obviously, cannot calculate the degree of saturation of a mineral not included in the program or for which the appropriate ions were not analyzed. Thus, a mineral that was not considered may be the most stable phase under a given set of conditions and may control the solubility of a trace element. SHORTAGES of metals and minerals and substitution of less critical materials for those in which a virtual famine exists received detailed and frank discussion at a recent conference in Washington called by Robert E. McConnell, director of the Conservation Section, Office of Production Management. Representatives of the large engineering societies in the United States and O.P.M. department heads participated in the discussion. To open the session Mr. McConnell called upon Zay Jeffries, chairman of the O.P.M. Advisory Committee on Metal Conservation and Substitution, to summarize the present situation. Dr. Jeffries touched briefly on the status of metal shortages, which has already received considerable attention in the popular press, and said that much of the present difficulty was caused by the too-hasty substitution-without sufficient con¬sideration of the immediate conse¬quences-of metals having ordinarily a small yearly consumption, for those having a much larger annual consumption. As a result, all the alloying metals used in alloy-steel manufacture have become scarce, with the exception of molybdenum; further¬more, despite a reserve of 11,000 tons of molybdenum in this country and despite a normal consumption of only about 3500 tons and a prospective annual production rate of 21,000 tons by October, a shortage of molybdenum is possible before this war is over.

IF I LIVE another fourteen months and am still con-nected with the coal industry, I shall then have com-pleted a half century with it. Since May, 1874, when .I first entered the bituminous workings as a miner, I think I have held almost every position connected with a mine except possibly that of mule driver, for which I was unfitted by reason of my religious upbringing. We are all agreed, at least I have not heard it contra-dicted, that there is serious over-production in the bituminous industry. This has come about in various ways and is easily explained. During the Fuel Admin-istration, I recall making an estimate of the possible output of the bituminous mines of the country provided they were given a full force of men and a full-car supply; my estimate was a little over a billion tons a year. A few months ago, the late Francis H. Peabody, of Chicago, made a practically identical estimate. If, however, both of these conditions should happen con-currently, there would very soon be no market for the coal, and many of the mines would close down. Even today, if 10 per cent. more cars were furnished, to the bituminous mines, market prices would drop very seriously.

Two-phase Pb-Sn alloys, ranging in compositiotz from 12 to 26 at. pct Pb, were unidirectionally solidified in a convection-fvee system, with thermal gradients in the liquid of up to 480°C per cm. Plane front solidification Loas achieved in all alloys at sufficiently steep gradient and slow growth rate. Conditions causing breakdown of the interface to a cellular or dendritic structure were roughly as predicted by a sinlple constitutional supercooling criterion. Structures of alloys of near-eutectic composition, solidified with plane front, exhibited a lamellar structure; the alloys furthest from the eutectic exhibited a rod-like morphology. Assumptions used in a previous paper for calculations of solute redistribution in two-phase plane front growth are shown to be reasonable for Pb-Sn alloys. Results of calculations are in good agveement with experiment. These show that variations in growth rate during solidification of the composite produce marked changes in average composition of the solid. IN a previous paper, Part I,' conditions necessary for plane front solidification of two-phase alloys were discussed and calculations given on solute redistribution in this type of solidification. This paper, Part 11, describes experiments on Pb-Sn alloys, designed to check the assumptions of the analyses presented, and to demonstrate their applicability to a given alloy system (Pb-Sn). APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE General. A vertical crystal growing unit was built for the study as described below, and "normal solidification" employed throughout (i.e., the ingot was completely melted except for a portion near the bottom end and then solidification initiated). The furnace was designed to permit achieving very low interface velocities, and steep gradients, in essential absence of convection; it is sketched in Figs. 1 and 2. Simple heat flow considerations indicated choice of a small-diameter specimen (ingot) to achieve high thermal gradients; ingot size chosen was 0.3 cm in diam. The ingots were held inside silica tubes 0.06 cm wall thickness. The requirement for an essentially convection-free system was met by use of the vertical furnace with the heat source over the heat sink, as well as by use of the small diameter ingots. In addition, by selection of tin-rich Pb-Sn alloys, the diffusion boundary layer (lead-rich) was denser than the bulk liquid and would not cause convection. The only apparent driving force for convection in this system was the small transverse temperature gradient resulting from heat flow into the samples from the furnace. Such convection must have been small, however, since 1) no temperature fluctuations in the melt were noted in the recordings, which would have indicated turbulent convection, and 2) experimental results obtained and described below could not have been achieved in presence of significant convection. Ingot Preparation. Pb-Sn alloys ranging from 12 to 26 at. pct Pb were prepared from high-purity lead and tin (99.9999 pct pure metal). Each alloy was prepared by first melting the pure metals in the proper ratio in air, in a Pyrex container. The melt was then stirred thoroughly with a graphite rod and cast into a preheated graphite mold. Ingots were then prepared from these castings for use in the actual experiments; each ingot consisted of a rod of alloy, 15 cm long in a 25-cm-long transparent fused-silica tube, 0.3 cm ID and 0.06 cm wall thickness. One chromel-alumel thermocouple, made with 0.004-in.-diam wire and protected by a two-hole alumina tube, was inserted into each ingot. The 1.5 cm of the thermocouple nearest the bead were protruding from the alumina tube and were coated with a very thin layer of boron nitride paste which provided electrical insulation while allowing good heat conduction. The electrically welded junction size was about that of each wire and the cross section of the two wires represented about 0.3 pct of the sample cross section. THE Golden Cycle Mining and Reduction Co. operates its custom mill at Colorado Springs on Cripple Creek ores exclusively. These ores are straight sulpho-tellurides, with practically no base metals such as Pb, Cu, Zn, As, or Sb. Upon entering the mill, the ore all passes through the sampler to storage bins, where beds of 5000 tons each are made to insure uniformity in roasting. CLASSIFICATION OF ORES For efficiency, it has been found advisable to separate the ores into two classes according to their line content. Other constituents have their effect, such as alumina and magnesia, but, speaking generally, these are roughly proportional to the line, which, as CaO, is used as the indicator. Class A contains not more than 2 per cent. CaO and comprises about 66 per cent. of the ore treated. Class B contains over 2 per cent. CaO, and comprises 34 per cent. of the ore treated. Typical analyses of both classes are as follows: Class A Class B Insol 56.70 75.90 Al203 2.30 3.40 Fe 3.26 3.48 CaO 1.57 5.12 S 1.79 1.80 Mg0 0.21 1.08 Ignition loss 3.20 6.50 99.03 97.28 The beds of each class of ore are made as large as possible with the available ore as it comes in, to avoid changing from one bed to the other any oftener than necessary. Each roaster will handle 50 percent. more of class A ore than of class B, with practically the same results. This necessitates changing the rate of feed for each new bed and tends toward a poor roast and loss of tonnage at each change.

ASIDE from the Tuesday symposium on gases in metals, the Iron and Steel Division swung into action for the first time on the third day of the meeting with a discussion of iron and steel alloys. Dr. E. S. Davenport opened the discussion on Wednesday morning by presenting the paper written by himself in association with E. C. Bain and W. S. N. wiring on the equilibrium diagram of iron-manganese-carbon alloys. A written discussion by Mr. Scott showed qualitative agree- ment, but some quantitative disagreement. Messrs. Marsh and Sisco discussed the paper at length, pointing out non- agreement of certain conclusions with the phase rule. Dr. Krivobok, although differing with the authors on some points, stated that in his opinion the information collected would be valuable in the practical use of these alloys.

During the recent development of aluminum alloys for free-cutting screw-machine rod, it became desirable to know something of the solubility of lead and bismuth in liquid aluminum and in some aluminum alloys. The literature is not particularly helpful in supplying this information. These portions, therefore, of the constitutional relationships of aluminum-bismuth and aluminum-lead alloys were investigated by thermal analysis and by chemical analysis of samples taken from aluminum-rich melts in equilibrium with precipitated lead or bismuth. The solubility of lead and bismuth in some liquid aluminum-copper alloys was also investigated. Some consideration was also given to the solubility of these elements in solid aluminum. Among the earliest investigators of the aluminum-lead and alunlinum-bismuth systems was Wright,' who reported that melts of aluminum and lead formed two layers indicating limited liquid solubility. Under his conditions, the aluminum-rich layer was reported to contain 1.91 per cent Pb and the lead-rich layer, 0.07 per cent Al. Subsequently, Pecheau2 found that in aluminum-rich alloy melts with more than 10 per cent Pb three layers were distinguishable. He reported that the middle layer contained from 3 to 10 per cent Pb. He also found that the melting point of aluminum appeared to be lowered slightly by the addition of lead. Gwyer3 investigated these alloys and found evidence of a slight lowering of the freezing point of aluminum by the addition of either lead or bismuth. He found no evidence of solid solubility in either case and made no attempt to determine the liquidus curves. Hansen and Blumen-tha14 reported that the addition of lead distinctly lowered the solidification point of aluminum. They also found that bismuth lowered the melting point of aluminum. Guillet5 reported almost complete mutual immiscibility for the aluminum-bismuth alloys in the liquid state. Bohner6 examined the effect of various concentrations of lead and bismuth on the electrical conductivity of aluminum. He found decreases in conductivity on annealing at 500' C. as compared with the conductivity of the same alloys on annealing at 300' C.

Production of petroleum in Trinidad during 1938 reached the record figure of 17,737,061 bbl., an increase of approximately two and a quarter million barrels over 1937. The principal development during the year was along the Guapo fault, which extends from Point Ligoure to Coora across the southwest portion of the island. This fault has been proved to be a major factor governing oil accumulation in the area. At the southeast end of the fault the Coora field has been actively developed during the year and already ranks as one of the major productive fields of the island. Approximately seven miles to the northwest, another richly productive area has been developed on the north side of the fault at Los Bajos, while several widely spaced wells along the fault in the intervening area suggest that the whole seven miles betwen Los Bajos and Coora will prove productive. The Penal field was placed on regular production during the early part of the year on completion of a pipe line to the Point Fortin refinery. This is a shallow pumping field with a daily output of 2000 to 1500 bbl. of heavy oil. Down-flank extension of the oil-producing structures of Forest Reserve, Kern and Point Fortin have considerably extended the proven acreages on these structures and exploitation of the deeper Cruse sands on these structures has also materially increased the known reserves. Wildcat drilling has been active in several areas. Four wells have been completed in the Mayaro district; four at Moruga; six at Cedros; six in the Morne Diable area; one at Erin and one at Point Ligoure. Few data are available from these areas, but it is understood that some cncouraging results have been obtained. In the northern basin, north of the Central Range, two locations were spudded in at the end of the year after extensive seismograph surveys. Both these locations are scheduled for depths in excess of 10,000 ft. This northern basin is entirely untested by the drill and the present drilling program is being keenly followed by all operators in Trinidad.

These portions, therefore, of the constitutional relationships of aluminum-ismuth and aluminum-lead alloys were investigated by thermal analysis and by chemical analysis of samples taken from aluminum-rich melts in equilibrium with precipitated lead or bismuth. The solubility of lead and bismuth in some liquid aluminum-copper alloys was also investi-gated. Some consideration was also given to the solubility of these elements in solid aluminum. Among the earliest investigators of the aluminum-lead and aluminum-bismuth systems was Wright,1 who reported that melts of aluminum and lead formed two layers indicating limited liquid solubility. Under his conditions, the aluminum-rich layer was reported to contain 1.91 per cent Pb and the lead-rich layer, 0.07 per cent Al. Subsequently, Pecheau2 found that in aluminum-rich alloy melts with more than 10 per cent Pb three layers were distinguishable. He reported that the middle layer contained from 3 to 10 per cent Pb. He also found that the melting point of aluminum appeared to be lowered slightly by the addition of lead. Gwyer3 investigated these alloys and found evidence of a slight lowering of the freezing point of aluminum by the addition of either lead or bismuth. He found no evidence of solid solubility in either case and made no attempt to determine the liquidus curves. Hansen and Blumen-thal4 reported that the addition of lead distinctly lowered the solidifica-tion point of aluminum. They also found that bismuth lowered the melting point of aluminum. Guillet5 reported almost complete mutual immiscibility for the aluminum-bismuth alloys in the liquid state. Bohner6 examined the effect of various concentrations of lead and bis-muth on the electrical conductivity of aluminum. He found decreases in conductivity on annealing at 500° C. as compared with the conductivity of the same alloys on annealing at 300° C.

In making gold alloys possessing certain physical properties, such i~nportant factors as corrosion resistance, color, hardness and melting points must be considered. All of these requirements depend directly upon the composition. It is possible to obtain the same colored gold alloy by using different compositions, but in doing so one may bring in some undesirable property. Other investigations have been carried on in this field by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise12 and L. Sterner-Rainer2 To make a complete study of the effect of composition upon these properties, a systematic investigation was carried on involving a range of copper content from 85 to 65 per cent. Elements such as zinc, silver and nickel were used to replace in part the copper content. The gold content in all the alloys remained constant. Only 10-karat gold alloys of those containing 41.6 per cent gold will be considered. All of the alloys were made in an induction furnace. Each alloy was cast in a 3 by 1/4 by 3/4-in. ingot. The method of obtaining the melting points and making color determinations was described in a previots paper.4 The Rockwell B scale with the 1/16-in. ball and 100-kg. weight was used for all hardness determinations. The submersion of test pieces in concentrated nitric acid is one of the standard corrosion tests used in the optical trade. A test piece in the 50 per cent cold-worked condition, % by 2 by 0.045 in., is blanked from a skip using a die, and the weight loss per square inch of surface is taken as a means of comparison. The time for this test is 2 1/2 hr. of actual submersion of the test picce in the acid. This standard test was applied to all of the 10-karat gold alloys discussed in this paper. The tensile tests were made upon strips of the dimensions shown in Fig. 1. The test pieces after blanking were annealed at 1300" F. for 20 min. and cooled in air. Thc "drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point, as there was a very marked "drop" when the yield point was reached.

THE Dust Symposium was attended by approximately 100 persons, nearly all of whom remained from the starting hour (2 p. m.) until the use of the auditorium was demanded for another meeting at 5:30 p. in. In calling the meeting to order, D. Harrington made a few remarks as to the importance of the health dust problem in mining as well as in general industry and expressed gratification that the subject is now out in the open and that mining people are desirous of ascertaining the facts. B. F. Tillson acted as chairman of the meeting. The milling executive who desires to know what to do to prevent his workers from being unduly exposed to the dust hazard can get much out of the paper by D. E. Cummings, who has been doing much work in mines trying to keep -the dust in the air within safe limits. His recommendations indicate that the main protection of the worker in mines is by adequate ventilation, supplemented by the extensive use of water in drilling, as well as in water curtaining to condition air both in regard to dust content and to temperatures. Blasting was shown to be one of the chief causes for dust and it was recommended that whenever feasible all blasting should be delayed to the end of the working shift.

The coal-measures of George's Creek coal-region, in Maryland, lie in a comparatively flat synclinal basin, about 4 miles wide. The dip of the measures is, in places near the edge of the basin, as much as 20 feet in 100. The Pittsburgh seam, known locally as the " Big Vein," is the only seam worked at the present time. Ocean No. 3, one of the large mines of the Consolidation Coal Company, has its opening on the outcrop of the Pittsburgh seam, in a ravine which cuts into this seam to such an extent as to bring this opening to within a mile of the axis of the basin. After working all the coal to the rise of this point, the mine was further developed by extending a slope down the dip of the seam, making such an angle with the line of greatest dip as to give a grade varying from 1 to 10 per cent., down which the empty cars carry a rope from a single-drum winding-engine. The coal was worked from each side of this slope in successive Iifts during its progress. From the top of the slope, for a distance of 4000 feet to the fourth lift, the " make " of water is drained by gravity through a heading into the adjoining mine. Below this point the water was pumped into this same heading, at the fourth lift, from which point, as before mentioned, it flowed by gravity.
