ALUMINUM alloys containing magnesium and silicon are susceptible to strengthening and hardening by suitable heat-treatments, and they constitute a class of alloys of considerable commercial importance. Generally, they contain these two elements in the proportions required for the formation of the intermetallic compound Mg2Si, or an excess of silicon; no commercial wrought alloys are made with an appreciable excess of magnesium. The reason for not having excess magnesium is obvious from the results given in this paper, since it is shown that excess magnesium results in a proportional decrease in the solubility of Mg2Si. This is the eighteenth1 of a series of papers from the Aluminum Research Laboratories dealing with the equilibrium relations in aluminum-alloy systems; most of the previous publications concerned binary aluminum-alloy systems; this is the fourth of a group pertaining to ternary aluminum-alloy systems. The work on this system was com-pleted in 1930, but the results were not published because of the pressure of other work. Hanson and Gaylor2, in 1921, presented the results of an extensive investigation of the aluminum-magnesium-silicon system. Their results indicated that an excess of magnesium over the amount required to form the compound Mg2Si caused a noticeable decrease in the solid solubility of Mg2Si in aluminum. A more recent investigation3 in these laboratories showed that the solid solubility of Mg2Si in aluminum was 1.85 per cent at 595° C. and decreased to 0.30 per cent at 300° C. The results of the latter investigation were used as the basis for the present work.

IN response to many urgent requests for a concrete realization of a series of standard temperatures that would be available to any one anywhere for the standardization of pyrometers and the reproduction of the standard scale of temperature for use in laboratories and industrial works, the Bureau, in 1916, made arrangements with several manufacturers to prepare a series of- pure metals that could best serve this purpose. After the necessary preliminary work of chemical analysis, as a check on the purity, together with exact determinations of melting or freezing points, the Bureau began, in 1917, the issuing of melting -point standards of tin, zinc, aluminum, and copper. At the outset, it was decided to secure metals of the highest purity and of American manufacture, and this was accomplished in a more satisfactory manner than anticipated. In the preparation of these temperature standards, the Bureau has had the hearty cooperation of several American companies, which have succeeded in producing metals highly satisfactory for the purpose and of as high a state of purity as could have been obtained anywhere. Each company that undertook the responsibility of furnishing a metal for this series of standards exercised most painstaking care to produce the best possible product as to purity and uniformity. A representative of the Bureau witnessed the actual preparation of each metal. The 300 and 400-lb. (136 and 181-kg.) samples making up the first series were all used up, with the exception of the aluminum, early in 1919. The Bureau has taken steps to replenish its stocks of metals serving as pyrometric standards and to the list has been added lead. The copper and lead are being ordered this time in 1-ton lots and the zinc and tin in 300-lb. (136 kg.) lots as before. The wide dissemination of these samples will be appreciated when it is noted that the metals are distributed by the Bureau inn quantities of 50 cu. cm. each, at $2 a sample and accompanied by a certificate which gives the melting point as determined by samples from the same lot. The manufacture and detailed description of chemical analyses, physical measurements, and precautions in use of these pyrometric standards, are described in detail in the Bureau Circulcar No., 66.

In normal soils there are usually 10 to 50 parts of copper in every million parts of .soil. Only 0.2 to .5 pct of this copper can be found by any simple cold chemical attack. Now, with rubeanic mid reagent paper, a prospector or field geologist can detect as little us 4 ppm of readily available copper ill soil. This degree, of sensiticity is enough to determine the presence. of copper anamalous an as and, ecentually, to discouer copper mineralization. Circumstances determine whether it is better to make analyses in the field or in a permanent laboratory. The rubeanic acid test described in this article has been designed primarily for field use: it is simple and virtually foolproof, and it requires a minimum of field kit." This is by no means a quantitative test, but it is accurate enough to provide a valuable indicator of copper anomalous areas for both prospectors and field geologists. The easiest method for detecting metal deposits that do not produce visible float or stains is to make a simple chemical test for the metal in overlying soil, or in the silt of a stream that may have picked up metal farther upstream. In Brief: Testing for copper may be done easily by shaking a soil sample with strong acetic solution in a small test tube and pouring the mud into a small filter, the tip of which rests upon a strip of reagent paper impregnated with rubeanic acid (di-thio-oxamide). When copper is present—and only when it is—a blue spot develops. The more copper, the darker the spot. If the copper content is merely the small amount present everywhere, there is a pale blue or hardly visible spot; if it is abnormally high, the spot will be dark. There are, of course, intermediate cases where the experienced geochemist cannot tell offhand whether a medium-strength spot represents rich agricultural soil, weak copper mineralization, or distant rich copper mineralization. Reagents and material are inexpensive; the test may be readily done on the spot with a simple kit easy to pack and handle. Anyone interested in general problems of soil sampling as applied to prospecting may refer to an article recently presented to the AIME. In exploration work it is the contrast between the metal content of anomalous and background areas that is important; absolute values become of greater interest when an anomalous area is being investigated in detail. With specific reference to copper, it has been the authors' experience that the amounts of metal extracted from anomalous and normal soils with buffer solutions of decreasing pH show better contrast if an acid reagent is used. This contrast tends to increase with increasing acidity until 3 to 4 pH is reached. Using a short cold attack on unheated soil, it has been found that further increases in acidity do not produce better results, and only increase the hazards involved in carrying strong acids. An acidity of about pH 4 is satisfactory for direct determination of copper by dithizone. But dithizone itself introduces some problems: it must be made up fresh at frequent intervals, and with some soils, notably those with much ferric iron, oxidation mag take place before all the copper has reacted with the dithizone. Rubeanic acid keeps its strength unimpaired for long periods, is unaffected by oxidation, and is practically specific for copper at pH 4. Consequently it seems an ideal reagent to use in prospecting for copper. History and Background: Rubeanic acid (systematic name: dithio-oxamide (SC-NH2) has long been known as a spot test reagent for some heavy metals with which it gives a number of compounds. IN analyzing the relation between the orientation of new grains and that of the deformed matrix of axially extended and recrystallized single crystals of face-centered cubic metals, a two-stage rotation process" is generally used where the first rotation is made in order to account for an "adjustment of orientation to the environment of strain."&apos; It has been argued that in spite of the difference of orientation, which may amount to as much as 12" (in a brass),&apos; between the octahedral plane as observed in the parent lattice and in the recrystallized grain, it is believed to be a common plane in the sense that it constituted the nucleus in the parent strained crystal from which the new grain grew.&apos; A possible source of the deviation in orientations of a common pole in the new grain and that of the deformed single crystal matrix from which it has grown may be found in the distribution of strain resulting from the plastic deformation. It might be expected in view of the incongruent nature of shear&apos; that the perfection of the octahedral plane along which glide has occurred is disrupted and that this disruption constitutes the strain from which nuclei of new grains can grow during recrystallization. Evidence for the existence of strain along glide planes was first detected by Taylor" in 1927 and substantiated by Collins and Mathewson&apos; in 1940. In their investigations, however, the deformed single crystalline specimens (aluminum) were cut mechanically along the glide planes followed by mechanical polishing. X-ray exposures (glancing angle) of only 8 min with filtered radiation were used. It was later shown&apos; that this type of surface preparation did not remove with all certainty the mechanically disturbed surface. It was felt that a re-investigation of this phenomenon using more refined techniques might reveal a more correct extent of the strain resulting from the deformation which might correlate the deviation of the common pole of the recrystallized grain with the acting slip plane of the matrix crystal. In accordance with these thoughts, a single crystal of a brass (70/30 nominal composition) M in. in diam x 5 in. long, tapered as in previous experiments,&apos; was extended and carefully documented with respect to elongation and shear. Disks about % in. thick paralle&apos;l to the primary slip planes were cut from the specimen by means of an etch cutter." These disks represented volumes of the specimen which had been extended 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 pct. Copper Ka monochromatic radiation was obtained by reflecting 35,000 v copper radiation from the c-cleavage face of a pentaerythritol crystal. The monochromatic radiation was collimated and led on to the disk set at the proper 0 angle for reflection from the primary (111) planes. The monochromatic beam was aligned in a plane containing the active slip direction. Following a 10 hr exposure at the theoretical Bragg angle, the disk was reset at 0 + 1°, 0 — 1", 0 + 2", 0 — 2", etc., until no Bragg reflection was obtained. The disk was then rotated 90" about its polar axis, and the same X-ray procedure was used. The results are shown in Table I. It may be seen from the results in Table I that the plastic deformation (20 pct elongation) produces fragments of the glide plane which are rotated or tilted as much as 25 " from the normal position on a purely block slip model. In addition to the large variation in 0 angle in the slip direction, there is a variation in 0 as much as 20" in the direction at right angles to the direction of slip, i.e., <110>. In view of the results shown, it may now be argued that the strain distribution finds its origin in the incongruent nature of the slip process.&apos; The use of the two-stage rotation process seems valid in attempting to explain the relation between the orientation of recrystallized grains and the matrix from which they have grown. In the manufacture of charcoal-blooms, washing or cleansing of the ore from adhering gangue has been practiced for many years. A sluice-box is even to-day used for that purpose in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. For the Lake Champlain bloomaries hard magnetic ores are crushed with stamps and then sluiced or jigged in hand-jigs. The stamps used in the Lake Champlain region are of the most primitive kind. They consist of a trip-hammer, dropping on a perforated cast-iron plate, through which the crushed ore escapes. Only friable rock can thus be successfully treated. To render the raw ore friable, a calcining or burning in piles on a bed of cordwood is resorted to. An expense of 35 cents per ton of crude rock treated is thus incurred. The crushed ore is shovelled or otherwise fed into jigs without previous sizing, except such as is incidental to crushing through the perforated bottom of the stamping-machine. In jigging this ore, it is allowed to pass through the bedding into the "hutch." The tailings are scraped off and wasted. They contain a large percentage of fine ore. In many instances, this is regained by subsequent sluicing. Such was the condition of the industry, when the writer&apos;s attention was first called to it in 1882. No attempt had been made to introduce into thiS branch of ore-dressing the notable improvements adopted in concentrating the ores of other metals. The result of the writer&apos;s investigations was the building in 1882 of the "Crown Point Separator." At the Crown Point Mines, N. Y., lean ore unfit for the blastfurnace (containing less than 331/3 per cent. of iron), was concentrated and used in the bloomary connected with the mines. The ore was burned here as elsewhere, and treated as described. The plant designed by the writer for Crown Point, is nearly a counterpart of that since erected by Messrs. Copeland and Bacon, contractors, for the Theal mine, Putnam County, New York, which is illustrated by the accompanying plate. The only difference is in

TEN years ago Taggart, Taylor and Ince1 described a workable, convenient apparatus for the measurement of contact angles between cleaved, ground or polished particles and captive bubbles. Wark and Cox2 and Wark and Sutherland3 have done an immense amount of experimental work with this apparatus. Their work has had as principal object the determination of "contact curves." Contact curves are cartesian charts in which pH (or some other variable) is plotted against quantity of modifying agent. The rectangular area is broken into two or more curvilinear areas separated by the contact curve. The curve indicates that a sharp demarcation exists between conditions that bring about sticking of particles to bubbles and conditions that do not produce sticking. The type curve appears in the TRANSACTIONS as Fig. 1, page 248, volume 112. Wark and Cox offer data to show that the contact angle has a value determined by and characteristic of the agent used. Wark and Cox also make the statement that they believe this value is independent of concentration (ref. 2a, p. 209). They say: It is suspected that, given sufficient time and provided that there are no disturbing factors, the full ethyl xanthate angle (corresponding to a complete xanthate film) would be obtained in every case where contact occurs. Such a conclusion, if correct, would tend to substantiate the hypothesis of flotation collection by metathesis championed by Taggart and his associates4-8 and would argue against the adsorption hypothesis now adopted by Wark7 and by one of us.8 However, the data of Wark and Cox do not bear out the conclusion that there is a sharp passage from conditions of contact to conditions of noncontact. Rather, they indicate the existence of a transition zone of reagent concentration across which the contact angle varies with changes in reagent concentration from zero to a value near the maximum. This may be seen, for example, from Fig. 195 in the new text by one of us (ref. 8, p. 380), which presents the data of Wark and Cox in graphical form. The object of this study has been to explore the nature of the transition from conditions of contact to conditions of noncontact. The data of Wark and Cox to which reference has been made as showing that a gradual transition exists are marred by the fact that the region of critical-agent concentration is at an extremely small concentration. This condition suggests that diffusion may have played such a preponderant role that equilibrium was not reached within the time alloted. In the Wark and Cox data, the critical concentration was at about one part of xanthate per million parts of water. To form a monolayer of xanthate on the mineral surface would therefore require depletion of xanthate in the liquid to a depth of the order of

In the study described here, flotation tests were conducted on pure CaF2, on CaF2 doped at several concentration levels with either NaF or YF3, and on natural fluorite samples containing various amounts of impurities in an effort to extend previous knowledge of the influence of crystalline point imperfections on the flotation properties of solids. The results of these tests showed that although recoveries generally decreased as impurities increased, the differences in recovery were not nearly as striking as those detected in earlier experiments. A number of experimentalists have shown an interest in the way in which crystalline point imperfections affect the flotation properties of solids. As long ago as 1953, Welch hypothesized that it might be possible to control surface imperfections and thereby also control the flotation of solids.&apos; A few years later, in some rather extensive work, Plaksin and his coworkers varied the surface imperfections of a number of compounds by oxidation or reduction processes and found that significant variations in flotation properties resulted.2-4 More recently, Simkovich showed that the recovery of both AgCl and PbS could be markedly varied by adding solid-solution impurities, which acted as doping agents, to these compounds.5 Then Mular studied the flotation of ZnO as a function of the doping agents Al2O3 and Li2O.6 Once again, it was found that these impurities, even in very low concentrations, had profound effects upon flotation recoveries. From an imperfection point of view, the defect structures of the compounds tested previously are as follows:7 PbS — amphoteric semiconductor with a Frenkel-type defect structure in the cation sub-lattice.8 AgCl - ionic conductor-Frenkel type defect structure? ZnO — n-type semiconductor, zinc ion interstitials and quasi-free electrons.10 All of these works undoubtedly bear some relation to the findings that the flotation properties of seemingly identical minerals from different ore deposits often exhibit extreme variation in flotation behavior, i.e., that small amounts of analytically undetectable impurities often have a great influence upon flotation

This paper is written as a discussion of the paper, "Buckling of Tubing in Pumping Wells, Its Effects and Means for Controlling It" by Arthur Lubinski and K. A. Blenkarn, which war published in the March, 1957, issue of Journal oP Petroleum Technology. An analogy is drawn between the buckling of tubing in pumping wells and a fiube, fitted with frictionless pistom, linked by an inelastic rod, and which is subject to an internal pressure. A simple derivation shows that the critical internal pressure exerts a hydrostatic force on the pisfon which is close to the Euler load for compression buckling of the same tube. While the results agree with those of Ref. I, the basis of calculations has been changed and clarified. The presence of internal upsets at the pistons is discussed. INTRODUCTION In the Appendix, Lubinski and Blenkarn state that a tube with ends closed by frietionless pistons connected by an inelastic rod (Fig. 1) will behave as a column loaded with a force equal to the tension force in the rod. They note that, while the fluid may not resist a shear force, the moment in every cross section is piston force multiplied by the elastic line deflection (c.f., the loaded column). Since the equations of the elastic lines are similar in the two cases, the solution is carried over from the loaded column. On the contrary it is suggested that while the method of solution remains unchanged from the column case, the actual stress distribution is different, a fact which is taken into account in this note. A simple method of approximating the buckling pressure is given, and their reasoning in our mathematical language is continued. GENERAL EQUATIONS The equation of an elastic line, initially straight in the x direction (Fig. 2), is given by In the case of a loaded column, this may be written: For the pressurized tube it was shown, by analogy with the loaded column, that tion has a solution that, for P, = EI/P, any deflection is stable (a criterion for buckling). An attempt will be made to describe more precisely, the forces acting on the tube, and to analyze the buckling condi,tions. DISCUSSION If the tube assumed a deflected position, the volume between the pistons would increase so that in deflecting, the energy of the fluid would decrease. When the increase in elastic energy of the tube (due to bending) is equal to the decrease of fluid pressure energy, buckling conditions exist. Analyzing the forces on the tube (Fig. 3), two transverse forces, T,, T,, exerted by the pistons, are balanced by a resultant of the pressure elements which are linearly dependent on the local curvature of the elastic line (Fig. 4). Unlike most buckling cases, the forces depend on the shape of the elastic line, a condition that makes a rigorous mathematical treatment difficult. Several approximations may be used to clarify the problem.

Heat content values of tantalum monocarbide and tungsten monocarbide have been determined from 325" to 985°K by means of a drop-type diphenyl ether calorinzeter. Based on the values obtained in the present study and those available in the literature, best values lected and computed from 298. 15°K to temperatures close to their respectiue melting points. At temperatures higher than 1700°Kfor TaC and 27000 K for WC, values of Cp and related thermodynamic quantities were extrapolated based on the two Debye parameters: one corresponds to the metal sublattice and the other to the carbon sublattice. The contrzbutzon In the total specific heat due to lattice dilation was evaluated using the Nernst-Lindemann relalionship. Using the same Debye parameters, values of the linear coefficients of ther mal expansion for TaC and WC were calculated from absolute zero to their respective melting points using the Grüneisen equation. The calculated values are in excellent agreement with the experimental values available in the literature. Finally, the values of the bulk modulus of TaC from room tenzperature to temperature near its melting Point were also calculated using the equation recently derived by Anderson. In a recent publication,31 Darken has derived an equation to describe thermodynamic behavior in ternary metallic solutions with compositions near pure component 1: Eq. [I] is understood to be a general equation, consistent with the ternary Gibbs-Duhem equation, which is proposed as a logical formalism in view of observed behavior in some binary metallic solutions31&apos;32 rich In Eq. and am are constants obtainable from the 1-2 and 1-3 binaries. The parameter 023 may be determined from measurements on the ternary The purpose of this discussion is to compare Eq. [I) or [3] with other ternary formulations involving binary terms, within the regions of validity of Eqs. [I], [2], and [3]. First, the ternary point is considered to be at the intersection of two composition paths, one with constant N1 and another with constant N2/N3 as shown in Fig. 10. The terms in Eq. [3] may be related to the binary points shown by multiplying the first term on the right-hand side of Eq. IN many ways, the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February was the most successful yet held. Attendance surpassed even that of the 75th Anniversary Meeting in 1947 with its international flavor. The number of technical sessions and the number and quality of papers presented almost certainly set a new record. The banquet was the best attended of any yet held even though the price reached a new high. Despite the demand for almost 1700 tickets to the banquet, some felt that the price-$13.50-was higher than they could afford. There are two points of view: One is that this is the big social event of the year for members and that it is worth from three to five dollars more to have it at the Waldorf and to have a luxury menu, as we did this year, with turtle soup, a fish course, guinea hen for the entree, and wild rice (which we understand is $3.50 per lb) for a vegetable. The other point of view is that a seven or eight dollar banquet of more simple food at the Commodore Hotel would more than make up in appeal, especially to the younger and less well-heeled members, what it would lack in glamour.

The Blueberry mine is about 10 miles west of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. The property consists of about 2000 acres in sees. 3, 4 and 5, T. 47, N.R. 28W. and secs. 32, 33 and 34, T. 48, N.R. 28W., and, excepting one intervening 80-acre tract, contains the iron formation for a length of about 21/4 miles. The property is traversed by State Highway M-28 and is served by three railways, the Chicago & Northwestern, the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic, and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming. The Northwestern transports the ore to a dock at Escanaba; the other railways, to Marquette. Ore for Chicago goes via Escanaba and that for Lower Lake ports, as Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo, via Marquette. History The presence of iron formation in this property has been known for many years, and mining operations on a small scale have been carried on intermittently. The Dexter mine, on the SE.1/4 of the NW.1/4 of sec. 3, was worked from 1883 to 1897 and 118,000 tons of ore was mined. From 1907 to 1915 extensive exploration was carried on over the whole of sec. 3, including 79 diamond-drill holes with a total footage of 26,000 ft. The Chase mine, on the NE.1/4 of the NE.1/4 of sec. 3, was developed from this exploration work, but after about 200,000 tons had been mined the property was abandoned. From 1908 to 1910 exploration was carried on by another company on sec. 4, 47-28, including four drill holes with a total footage of about 5000 ft. Much of the drilling on sec. 3 and of the exploration work on sec. 4 are within the present developed area of the Blueberry mine. The effect of ten ternary additions on the aging of a Cu-Ag alloy was measured by X ray, microstructure and hardness. A supersaturated copper-rich transition structure was found. The effect of the ternary element was related to differences between transition and precipitate lattice parameters and analogies with solution and strain hardening. IN addition to the prerequisite of diminishing solid solubility with falling temperature, the theory of coherency hardening1 proposes that the principal source of hardening during precipitation is strain caused by coherency between the matrix and precipitate. For a given system greater coherency hardening would result from lengthening the period of coherent growth and/or increasing the number of nuclei, other things remaining equal. However, the hardness change during aging is a function of a number of phenomena in addition to coherency hardening, such as dispersion hardening, loss of coherency, solute depletion, matrix recovery or recrystal-lization, coalescence, and their relative time sequences. The present investigation was undertaken to study the effect of ternary additions on the age-hardening of Cu-Ag alloy. For this purpose a series of alloys were made containing as ternary constituents Mg, Al, Si, P, Mn, Ni, Zn, As, In, and Sb. These elements were added to a master 5 wt pct Ag in Cu alloy in such amounts as to obtain alloys listed in Table II containing the following approximate atomic percentages: 96 pct Cu, 3 pct Ag, 1 pct ternary addition. A 97 atomic pct Cu, 3 atomic pct Ag alloy was used as a comparison standard. There have been numerous investigations of age-hardening in Cu-Ag alloys2-lo but few of ternary Cu-Ag alloys. Pfister and Weist" found that 1 wt pct Ni reduced the solubility of Ag in Cu above 600 °C and that the rate of precipitation was slower than in polycrystalline Cu-Ag alloys of similar silver content. More recently Hodge, Jaffee, Dunleavy, and Ogden12 investigated the effect of ternary additions of Mg, Li, P, Cd, Zn, Zr and Be on strength properties of Cu-Ag alloys. Mg, Cd, and P were found to increase strength in the aged and cold-worked condition. Experimental Procedure Charges weighing 7.5 lb were melted in a closed carbon crucible under a reducing atmosphere* of nitrogen and hydrogen. A Durville-type casting procedure with a hot-top arrangement was used to obtain a sound casting, 2x2x43/4 in. Prior to rolling and annealing of the ingots, a trial solution anneal of rolled sections of the hot-top portions indicated that at 780°C melting was avoided except for the Cu-Ag-Sb alloy. This paper describes the development and implementation of the control system in the flotation plants of China. The control system can be categorized as: Control in the crushing circuits: Automatic control of the flow rate of the crusher. Control in the grinding circuits: Control of the feed rate of the grinding mill and circulating load. PSM-200, an indigenous particle size monitor, and gamma-ray density gauges are utilized. Control in the flotation circuits: pH control, flotation reagent dosage estimation and control, pulp level control, aeration control, etc. Complete grinding-flotation circuits control is based on minicomputer operations. Some typical control systems which have been applied in copper flotation plants are summarized and specific problems discussed.

Aluminum single crystals were pulled in an electrolytic cell allowing surface removal during the deformation. The extent of Stages I and 11 of the stress-st-aitz curve was increased and the slope decreased as the rate of metal removed from the surface was increased. An increase of the strain rate caused a decrease in the effectiveness of the metal removal. The data indicate that the work-hardening coefficient in Stage I is determined primarily by the conditions which exist on the surface of the crystal. In Stages 11 and 111, both surface effects and internal barriers are important. ALTHOUGH numerous investigations have been conducted on the plastic flow characteristics of metals in an attempt to explain the mechanism of work-hardening, relatively few studies have taken into account the influence of the surface. In all current theories of work-hardening it is assumed that the impediments to the movement of dislocations are within the crystal. The barriers due to the surface and the existence of solid and liquid films have been neglected even though it has been demonstrated that the surface exerts a large effect. A number of investigators1-l8 have shown that solid films on the surface of single crystals markedly affect their mechanical behavior. In general, the presence of a solid film tends to increase the yield stress and increase the work-hardening rate. Often, on single crystals, Stage I and, at times, Stage II regions are completely suppressed. Various mechanisms have been offered for the effects of oxide and metal films as well as the influence of electrolytes. Of these, concepts concerned with the locking of surface dislocation sources and the blocking of dislocations at the surface resulting in pileups appear to be actively considered at present. Barrett,11 Takamura,6 Gilman,19 Lipsett and King,20 Shapiro and Read,10 and Weiner and Gensamer21 are among those who have interpreted their results in terms of piled-up dislocations at the surface, while Adams.22 and Chalmers and Davis23 have explained their experimental observations in terms of locking of surface dislocation sources. In general, the change in plastic flow properties due to electrolytes has been explained in terms of the unblocking or unlocking of dislocations by the removal of the oxide films. In considering the two proposed mechanisms, it appears that the locking of sources of surface dislocations by a solid film should exert a primary influence only on the critical resolved shear stress for flow and not on the slopes of Stages I and 11. However, the blocking at the surface of dislocations from internal sources may also affect the critical resolved stress and furthermore exert an influence throughout the whole plastic range. In certain cases it does not seem feasible to explain the results of experimental observations in terms of locking of surface dislocation sources. The abnormal aftereffects found by Barrettll,12 by removing the oxide by an acid treatment are excellent evidence of the blocking of dislocations at the surface. Additional evidence in favor of a blocking due to a pileup of dislocations at the surface may be found from the observations that the critical resolved shear strength continues to increase with the thickness of the oxide layer until very heavy oxide layers are formed. If the locking of surface dislocations sources were the dominant factor, the critical resolved shear stress would not be expected to increase after all of the surface sources were locked by the formation of the oxide. This may be expected to happen after a few atomic layers of the oxide are formed. In spite of the above evidence on the strong influence of the surface on the plastic flow characteristic, this has been ignored in current theories of work-hardening. Seeger24,25 suggested that most of the dislocations may slip out of the crystal only when the specimen axis is within certain areas of the orientation triangle. In other areas the resolved shear stress in other glide systems is large enough to generate dislocations which can form Lomer-Cottrell locks, thereby decreasing the average slip distance in some directions and causing a larger hardening rate. Friede126 assumed that at the beginning of Stage 11, a large number of Lomer-Cottrell dislocations are formed by a catastrophic process which used up all the Frank-Read sources on the secondary slip-planes. In this manner a fixed number of Lomer-Cottrell locks is formed which act as barriers against which the dislocations can pile up. In Stage 111, Seeger24 and Diehl, Mader, and Seeger25 proposed that Lomer-Cottrell barriers are circumvented by the cross slip of extended screw dislocations. Cottrell and Stokes,27 Friedel,26 Cottrell,26 and stroh29 suggest that the Lomer-Cottrell dislocations collapse under the stress field of the dislocation pileup. George H. Abeel, Hurley, Wis. (communication to the Secretary) : Doubtless Mr. Boss did not mean to be understood as saying that the dikes of this range are everywhere overlaid with iron-ore. I know of places where the dark, massive dike is found near the surface, but no ore is found on it. And his statement (p. 557) that a wherever the slightest inclination is shown it is always to the east," should be modified to " usually." There are several instances of a westward pitch, e.g., at the Palms, Newport and Odanah properties, and also at the Montreal mine, where we encountered in the ore a small dike pitching west. Mr. Boss&apos;s statement (p. 559) that. the ore of the Pence mine lens " has all been removed from the Pence and Father Hennepin lands, and practically from the Montreal property, and is now being wrought by the Montreal Mining Company on the &apos; Sec. 33&apos; property," does not convey the exact state of the latter company&apos;s operations. We are still mining ore on the Montreal property from the lens referred to, and expect to continue doing so for some little time to come. On the other hand, we are getting a shaft down to the ore on the " See. 33 " property, but ye have not yet encountered the dike. This can hardly be considered as working the ore. I do not understand upon what evidence Mr. Boss can consider the correctness of a previous hypothetical location of the dike to have been established " within 2 feet," when the dike has not yet been reached. Possibly he has been misled by hearsay reports.

The history of the normal oil field is supposed to show an oil graph starting high in flush production, descending more or less steeply into the curve of settled production and dropping gradually to the vanishing point of economical operation. Together with this, somewhere in the early history of the field, there appears from a vanishing point a graph showing the production of water. During the period of settled production this graph rises higher and, toward the close, unless extensive work is done in the line of correction, rises far above the oil graph to the point at which the cost of operation terminates profitable pumping. Fields that start out with a high relative content of water are generally very short-lived. Fields that never develop a water problem are exceedingly rare. The McKittrick oil field, Kern County, California, with 840 acres of proved ground, 300 wells and a present recovery per acre of 94,598 bbl. from 1898 to Aug. 1, 1930, presents a study which is an apparent reversal of the outlined normal history. Though the history of the field now covers over 30 years of operation, it is still too early and the conditions too unique to project the graph of production to completion. The present conditions and directions of change are most interesting, in that the curve of oil production is remarkably flat and the curve of water invasion, after reaching an appalling height, has shown a definite reversal and a continued decline for 10 years. Early drilling in the McKittrick field was in or prior to 1898. Development continued steadily to 1918 when the present limitations of the field were determined. Shut-offs, according to accepted practice of the time, were made by driving the shoe into a shale stratum or into a tamped-in bridge of sand, rosin and clay. Records of early days speak of three waters: (1) surface water which was fresh; (2) an intermediate sulfur water, encountered below the top oil or tar sand; (3) bottom salt water. In different portions of the field any one of these waters let into a well by faulty completion might require immediate correction to obtain satisfactory production. In many wells,

This paper treats only of the practicability of introducing a standard classification into the records of production and distribution of coal which we try to keep in the Bureau of Mines. From the point of view of gathering and analyzing statistics, the requirements of a satisfactory classification are that it shall be so definite as to eliminate the factor of arbitrary judgment, that it shall be reasonably simple and, finally, and most important, that it shall be understandable to the trade. In other words, to be woven in the statistical record it must be adapted to the raw material which flows in from the 7000-odd mines that produce the coal. The success of any scheme of classification, from the point of view of use, will depend largely on the degree to which it utilizes the accumulated experience of the trade and employs as far as may be possible the accepted trade designations. The experience of the Tidewater Coal Exchange during the war would be an excellent point of departure for a use classification of the coals of the Eastern Appalachians. Although the exchange long since passed out of existence, coal is still quoted and sold by the old pool numbers, and they have shown rather extraordinary vitality. Some years ago, in the Geological Survey, the experiment was tried of getting operators to classify their own coal by offering them a list of standard designations on the annual statistical questionnaire. The results were more amusing than informative. What with the confusion in terminology and the natural temptation to put one&apos;s best foot foremost, there was a general tendency to grade up the quality. Floods of semi-bituminous coal flowed in from many sources, millions of tons from districts where not a pound of that quality has ever been produced. The producers of semianthracite in Arkansas almost without exception would report their product as anthracite and their neighbors in the little Paris field, producing a fine blocky house coal averaging about 17 per cent, volatile, would say, "Our coal isn&apos;t anthracite; it&apos;s a semianthracite." Finally we discontinued the publication of those data as being more misleading than helpful.
