MIXED emotions were produced by the announcement that the buildup of weapons will be stretched out till mid-1954 instead of the previous 1953 deadline. Reason: government assistance programs will be tougher to get but there will be easement in materials allocations. Earlier in February, DPA had announced that tightening up on regulations governing rapid tax -amortization would become effective March 1. In the future, DPA will have to certify amortization contracts for all construction and permanent installations costing more than $100,000. This action was necessary according to DPA's James F. King, so that new industrial expansions already approved could be assessed in the light of the changing critical mineral picture. When DMPA inherited the backlog of government assistance, requests from DMA, it moved in fast. The results of DMPA's work is described in the article on p. 351 by James K. Richardson; The speed with which these requests were approved and the lengthening of the military program have made a reappraisal of the critical mineral list necessary. It looks as though the consumer industries will be getting more metal soon and, led by steel, there is an industry push toward the abandonment of CMP. Relaxing of materials controls appears imminent but discontinuing CMP is in the "let's talk this thing over" stage.

Since they were first introduced in the United States in 1964, rail mounted bucket wheel stacker-reclaimers have gained wide acceptance by the coal burning power plant group. Other installations include those in phosphate and steel mill ore storage areas. First Installation in the U.S.A. Three basic types of bucketwheels for handling stored bulk materials are now being used in the U.S. Bucketwheel stacker-reclaimers came into use in the U.S.A. in 1964 at the Chalk Point power station built by the Potomac Electric Power Co. It was decided, after serious study, to install the first slewing-boom, rail mounted bucketwheel stacker-reclaimer at this installation. It was designed with a separately counter- weighted wheel boom because the fixed counterweight of the European designed bucketwheel made it possible for the machine to overturn backwards if the wheel rested on the ground due to a possible failure of the luffing system.

Engineering trends for some years have been toward higher temperatures, both in process work and in steam generation. Progress in design has been dependent upon the development and evaluation of suitable alloys. Elementary knowledge of the limitations of copper-base alloys indicate their unsuitability for the higher ranges of operating temperatures; say, for steam to 950°F. Emphasis upon the more severe conditions perhaps is a reason why more complete evaluations have not been made for copper-base alloys over their range of suitability. However, the few studies made show clearly the need for more accurate evaluations. Some copper-base alloys long looked upon favorably because of superior room-temperature properties are not as desirable as some others perhaps not so "strong" and "hard," as measured by usual acceptance tests. Load-carrying capacity and structural stability arc two important factors. Structural stability as influenced by temperature, by presence of corrosive media, or by the effects of stress itself, frequently is a limiting factor. An early reference to creep properties of the cast copper-base alloys is that of Brown1 (Admiralty gun metal, Cu 87.5, Sn 10.1, Zn 2.3 and Pb 0.08). His tests were similar to present-day stress-rupture tests without measurement of creep elongrttion. Loading was in steps with usually 24 hr. between steps, and continued until failure. He advocated a "useful strength value" of 61/2 tons (I4,560 Ib.) per sq. in. at 572°F. (300°C.). A specimen broken in 1/2 hr. at 572°F. had a strength of 21 tons (26,880 Ib.) per sq. in. The strength values as determined by 1/2-hr. tests and those by the longer stress-rupturc start to differentiate at 392°F. (200°C). This is the temperature at which time at load began to play an important part. Bolton, Price and Hebemann2 give creep curves on 88-10-2 (A.S.T.M. B-60, CU 88, Sn 10, Zn 2) and steam or valve bronze (A.S.T.M. B-6I, Cu 87.50, Sn 6.00, Zn 3.75, Pb 1.70) at 500°F. Direct comparison of the two alloys under 7500 lb. per sq. in. stress showed the steam bronze (A.S.T.M. B-61) superior in creep strength to the 88-10-2 (A.S.T.M. B-60). The steam bronze shows no creep after 700 hr. (1540-hr. test). The 88-10-2 shows a rate of about 7.0 per cent in 100,000 hr. over the last 700 hr. of the test. Creep curves on the steam bronze are also given at the same temperature (500°F.) with loads of 6500 lb. per sq. in. and 8000 lb. per sq. in. These indicate "creep strengths" (creep rate within I per cent in 100,000 hr.) in excess of 8000 lb. per sq, in. for this alloy. It was found that higher percentages of tin are detrimental to creep resistance. There is a conspicuous lack of information in the literature on the precise role played by residual quantities of austenite in heat-treated steels. While retained austenite may be expected to have significant effects on such important properties as the impact resistance of tools and carburized parts and the dimensional stability of dies and gauges, attempts to study these problems systematically have suffered from the absence of a reliable technique for ascertaining absolute amounts of austenite. With such a technique, not only could the relation between residual austenite and service behavior be investigated, but the chemical and heat-treatment factors that control the quantity of the austenite could also be established. Thus, the retained austenite content could then be regulated in accordance with the results desired. The presence of retained austenite may be inferred by observing the changes in properties (hardness, specific volume, electrical resistance, etc.) due to its decomposition on subatmospheric cooling1 or on tempering,2 but these indirect measurements are not readily translated into percentages of austenite. Quantitative determinations have been achieved in special cases by means of dilatometric3 and magnetic4,5 measurements; but the former procedure requires that observations be conducted during the hardening and involves difficult calibrations that limit its applicability, while the magnetic procedure is very sensitive to extraneous influences and depends upon assumptions that can only be considered as approximate in an absolute sense. Furthermore, both the dilatometric and magnetic effects are volume properties, and cannot be conveniently utilized to explore variations in retained austenite from point to point in a suecimen. Some microstructures lend themselves to accurate evaluation of retained austenite contents by metallo-graphic methods,3 but such instances are not too common, and at best, the procedure is tedious. The characteristic X-ray diffraction lines of austenite permit positive identification of its presence; and in the present paper the intensities of these lines, or the corresponding densities* on photographic film, are employed to measure the amount of the retained austenite. In order to cancel the effect of uncontrollable variations in the X - ray exposure and film - development conditions, a standard reference line is Superimposed on each film by maintaining a foil of aluminum in the path of the incident X-ray beam during the entire exposure. INTRODUCTION The Alfredo underground mine is one of the three mining operations of Rio Tinto Minera, S.A., all near the community of Rio Tinto in Huelva province of southwest Spain. The other two operations are Corta Atalaya open pit (Pyrite ore) and Cerro Colorado open pit (Copper ore 1. Underground mining of Alfredo Mine for pyrites started in the nineteenth century and continued without interruption until 1979 when it was discontinued due to economical reasons. In 1972, a new project was started for the mining of copper bearing ores on the footwall of the pyrite deposit. This copper ore is locally named “Cloritas” and it forms a nearly vertical and tabular shaped orebody which forms an envelope at the footwall of the San Dionisio pyrite orebody. Mining of the Cloritas commenced in 1975 using cut and fill stoping. In 1977, the original project was completely revised which led to the introduction of a bulk mining system to achieve a planned production of 3,000 tonnes of ore per day. This paper covers the economic and planning aspects of the mine and discusses the evolution of the mining method for the Cloritas orebody. A GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE CLORITAS OREBODY The “Masa San Dionisio” (figure 1 ) is a massive sulphide orebody located in the town of Rio Tinto, about 90 kilometres west of Sevilla, Spain. Extensive vein-type sulphide mineralization exists in the volcanic host rocks of the Masa San Dionisio. Within this area of stockwork veins, there is a higher concentration of copper in the form of chalcopyrite in a zone adjacent to and paralleling the contact with the massive sulphides. This copper envelope is locally referred to as the "Cloritas Orebody” and the ore within it is called "Cloritas”. The main zone of the Cloritas orebody, (figure 11, is tabular and nearly vertical having a length of 375-400 m east-west, a thickness of 20-50 m north-south, and a vertical extension of 500 m from the surface. In addition to this area, there is a second less important low grade area called zone 2A located to the north of the main zone below 26 Level which, in some sections, is not fully separated from the main zone. MINING METHODS Mining in Rio Tinto area can be traced back to the Phoenecians and the Romans. Modern day mining started with the demand for sulphuric acid during the last half of the nineteenth century. By 1971, more than 33 million tonnes of pyrite had been mined out of Alfredo Mine, (San Dionisio Orebody), using labor intensive drift and fill methods and also by open pit method. During the last decade, underground mining of the pyrite had become uneconomic due to lower prices and a slackening demand for pyrite, and the underground mining operations for pyrite were finally stopped in 1979. In 1971, a major change in the long range mining plans for Masa San Dionisio was established. Crude petroleum produced in the Texas Panhandle oil field is both an asphalt and a paraffin-base oil and is further characterized by being a high-gravity crude with an extremely high cold test,. R. S. BUSK*—I wish first to congratulate the authors of this paper both for the work done and the presentation of that work. We have also been working on this type of alloy development, but any technical contribution I might have is better reserved for a separate paper which is planned in the near future. However, I would like to insert a word of caution. The alloys described in this paper are still very much in the laboratory stage. There still remains the quite vexing problem of property stability at slightly elevated temperatures which must be solved before the properties quoted can be effectively utilized. These alloys are extremely interesting and I am confident that the problems can be solved. However, the present existence of those problems must not be overlooked. I have one question with regard to the work-hardening test. If the work harden-ability of magnesium is compared to aluminum using a more standard test such as the Meyer Analysis the magnesium is found to work harden the more rapidly. Is the test developed for this work truly a work-hardening test or a measure of something else ? J. H. JACKSON (authors' reply)—I am sure we appreciate the comments of Mr. Busk and we are pleased that the Dow Chemical Co. has also undertaken work in this field. It is a big field. We, of course, are continuing our research for the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics, since, as clearly shown in the paper, the alloys are not completely developed. With regard to Mr. Busk's comments on the relative work-hardenability of aluminum and magnesium, the comparison we cited in the paper was intended merely to show that the results obtained by our method of testing were independent of the yield strength of the materials. We believe that this test method afforded a rough indication of the work-hardenability of the magnesium-lithium base alloys. It is not known whether this method affords greater or less accuracy than the Meyer Process, which is based upon a hardness-test impression. It is quite possible, since work-hardenability is a function of metal purity, that our results, obtained for commercial aluminum and magnesium, would be different if high-purity metals had been used. A. C. LOONAM—Lithium has some very interesting effects on magnesium. The paper showed that even small percentages increased ductility. These small amounts changed the axial ratio of the hexagonal magnesium from 1.624 in the pure metal to 1.606 in the saturated alpha solution, a value close to that of titanium, which has a ratio of 1.601. You will recall an article in the January, 1949, issue of the Journal of Metals where it was stated that titanium can be cold-rolled over 90 pct without any significant edge cracking. At 4.9 or 5 pct lithium, a change begins in crystal structure—from a hexagonal close packed to body centered cubic. There are two phases over a short range of lithium content, but at 10 pct the structure becomes completely cubic. The melting points of alloys in this range of lithium content are relatively high. Alloys even up to the six ratio have melting points above 500°C; this represents a relatively small reduction in melting point from pure magnesium itself. The magnesium-lithium system has a number of very interesting characteristics. This is only a very small part of the story. J. H. [ ] We at The Dow Chemical Co. have recently done some work on the deformation of magnesium alloys and although it is far from complete there have been a few observations which may be of interest in connection with this paper. In the first place, I should like to point out that the deformation of polycrystalline magnesium alloys has not been completely explained by the work on single crystals. Bakarian and Mathewson found slip on the ( 101) and {002) planes, and (102) twinning as the deformation mechanisms in magnesium single crystals, but in compression when the (002} planes were within ii° of parallel t0 the compression surfaces, fracture occurred at all temperatures up to 340°C (644°F). In commercial working processes, particularly in rolling, an orientation is quickly produced which should be unfavorable to further deformation by the three established mechanisms. FOR the use of workmen and employees, the company should establish a dispensary and a -hospital where workmen who suffer accidents or professional diseases may be taken care of; and at suitable places in the mine or metallurgical plant it should install first-aid stations. Workmen have a right to receive 75 per cent of their wages while they are unable to perform their work as result of a professional disease; but some companies pay full wages and in the case of natural disease, with the exception of venereal, alcoholism, injuries from fights, and chronic illnesses, 50 per cent of their wages up to a period of two months. The number of diseases the Law considers as professional is large and increases almost daily. Among the professional diseases, the one which has caused greatest harm to the miners and expense to the companies is silicosis. To avoid its propagation, companies should take every possible precaution that the working atmosphere is free from dust, abating this by frequent sprinkling of the workings using, wet drills and furnishing the workmen adequate protective apparatus such as respirators.

ELECTRIC power requirements for Climax are similar to those of most metal mines, except that large blocks of power are used underground and there are a number of other unusual applications. Power is furnished to the Company by the Public Service Co. of Colorado over two 100,000-volt lines to a bank of three 3333-kva. transformers 100/13.8 kv. These transformers are designed so that with the addition of forced cooling their capacity may be increased a third at 12,000-ft. altitude. On the secondary side of this bank is a 15-kv., 1200-amp. oil circuit breaker provided with automatic reclosing relays allowing three successive short circuits before lockout. From this breaker 13.8-kv. power is transmitted to a central switching station where all circuits radiate to the different operations of the property. Each circuit is protected by a 23-kv., 600-amp. oil circuit breaker with by-pass and isolating disconnecting switches. The Ten Section oil field is located in the San Joaquin Valley in Kern County, California. about 12 miles southwest of Bakersfield in Township 30 South, Ranges 25 and 26 East. The accumulation is in a low relief anticlinal dome and has a productive area of approximately 2,200 acres. Discovered in 1936 as a result of seismic work, it was the first field on the floor of the Valley to obtain production. It had a small primary gas cap, and since its inception has been produced by depletion with controlled withdrawal from the gas cap to minimize blowthrough. STRUCTURE AND STRATIGRAPHY The Ten Section structure is an elongated anticlinal dome with flank dips of only about 7 degrees. A map of the field, now fully developed, and a composite log are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Contours shown on the map are on the top of the first zone, or Marker XA as indicated on the composite log. As shown, the field has a productive closure of only some 350 feet, and there apparently is no faulting in the reservoir. The productive measures in Ten Section are of Upper Miocene age and are known as the Stevens sand. They contain thin, irregular shale or siltstone streaks which vary considerably in stratigraphic position and thickness and apparently are rather discontinuous. As a result, individual sands and shales cannot be correlated over any appreciable area, which makes it difficult to subdivide the sand body into separate zones which are distinct throughout the field. However, there are two fairly persistent siltstone bodies that at the time of development were considered to divide the productive measures into three - zones. The first, or uppermost zone is productive over the entire field and has an average thickness of 180 feet, of which some 65 per cent is sand. It had a primary. gas cap in the crestal area with an areal extent of 930 acres. The second zone has a productive area somewhat smaller than the first zone, but it did not have any original gas cap. It has an average thickness of about 360 feet, of which 55 per cent is sand. The third zone has a very limited areal extent and a maximum productive thickness of 100 feet, of which 80 per cent is sand. Recently, a deeper oil accumulation, termed the "53" sand, was discovered, but it is not discussed in this analysis. In the first and second zones the water table was at 7,980 feet subsea, while in the third zone it was at 8,080 feet subsea. RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS Sand Characteristics The Stevens sand in Ten Section is hard and well consolidated, and numerous wells were cored for core analysis. Core data on four representative wells are shown, plotted beside the electric logs in Figs. 3 to 6. The average porosity is 20 per cent, with porosities ranging from 15 to 30 per cent. It is estimated, from cores taken with oil base muds, that the interstitial water content is about 40 per cent. The average weighted permeability is approximately 140, with measured permeabilities ranging from 10 to 3,000 md. As might be expected with practically no correlation of individual sand

A correlation is presented for predicting the viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils under reservoir conditions. It is based on the dead oil viscosity and the solution GOR. The correlation was developed from a study which showed that at a fixed solution GOR, the relation between the gas-saturated oil viscosities and the correrponding dead oil viscosities is a straight line on logarithmic coordinates. Data from 457 crude oil samples from the major producing areas of the U. S., Canada and South America were used. The best straight lines through the data were fitted by the method of least squares with a digital computer. The correlation is presented in the form of an equation and also in a convenient gra-phical form. INTRODUCTION The viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils under reservoir conditions is an important physical property used in reservoir engineering calculations. Many difficulties are inherent in the sampling of gas-saturated oils and in the laboratory measurement of their viscosities. Therefore, it is frequently neither possible nor convenient to obtain measured values, so the viscosity must be estimated from other, more readily available data. This paper presents a correlation for predicting the viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils. The correlation is based on the amount of gas in solution and the viscosity of the dead oil at the temperature of interest. A previous correlation of these variables was presented by Beal. In comparison, the correlation presented here extends to a higher GOR and to a lower dead oil viscosity. Over the range of variables covered by both, this correlation is based on approximately 11 times as many oil samples. DEVELOPMENT OF CORRELATION A study was made of the variables or parameters which could be used to relate the viscosity of a gas-saturated oil to its dead oil viscosity. Preference was given to those variables which are easily and commonly measured in the field or in the laboratory. It was found that either the differential liquid formation volume factor or the solution GOR of the gas-saturated oil could be used as a correlating parameter. The solution GOR was se- lected for the correlation because of its simplicity and availability. In an attempt to refine the correlation by introducing a second parameter, the following additional variables were tested: differential liquid formation volume factor at the reservoir bubble point, the formation volume factor at the saturation pressure for the GOR of interest, reservoir temperature, viscosity of C+ fraction at 100°F and atmospheric pressure, weighted average gravity of gas in solution, oil gravity, reservoir bubble point pressure, saturation pressure at the selected GOR and reservoir temperature, and gas mol fraction. None of these improved the correlation to any significant extent. It was found that at any fixed solution GOR, the relation between the gas-saturated oil viscosities and the corresponding dead oil viscosities is a straight line on logarithmic coordinates, for the range of variables investigated. This straight-line relationship was used for the correlation. Viscosity data on a total of 457 crude oil samples were used. The data were obtained with rolling ball-type viscometers. The samples came from all of the important producing areas of the U. S., as well as from Canada and South America. Their geographical distribution is shown in Table 1. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to present the results obtained by solving the fractional flow' and frontal advance' equations to obtain oil recovery at water breakthrough as a function of the length of the system being flooded, the linear velocity of injection and the displacing phase viscosity. The method of solution makes use of the stabilized zone concept first presented by Terwilliger, et al3 when calculating saturation distributions in a gravity drainage system. In order to check the calculated results, the equations and method of solution were applied to the system on which Rapoport and Leas' reported experimental data. METHOD OF SOLUTION The solution of the fractional flow equation and the frontal advance equation is obtained by assuming that a water front forms to sweep the oil out ahead of it. There is ample evidence that under the proper conditions a water 'front does form. If this water front is not to dissipate, the water saturations which comprise it must have equal linear velocities. These water saturations are said to comprise the stabilized zone. Equation (2) indicates that for all these saturations and hence fw must plot as a straight line against saturation for those water saturations comprising the stabilized zone. The water saturations lying between the highest in the stabilized zone and the highest that can be achieved in the porous medium comprise the variable zone. Regardless of the numerical value of the length of the system, the variable zone must eventually span all of it, so that for long enough systems in Equation (1) will be small enough to be neglected. Hence, for the saturations in the variable zone Equation (1) can be simplified to In order to determine the composite fw function applicable to the entire range of saturations in the porous medium, it is necessary to find the water saturation which separates the stabilized zone from the variable zone. This dividing saturation must be on the curve defined by Equation (4), and a tangent curve at that point must pass through the initial water saturation to satisfy Equation (3). Hence, the valid fw curve is given by a straight line starting at the initial water saturation, tangent to the curve of Equation (4): and along the curve of Equation (4) from the point of tangency on. The point of tangency determines the water saturation dividing the zones. The length and shape of the stabilized zone can be found by solving Equation (1) for Integrating this expression numerically between any two saturations in the stabilized zone gives the distance separating these two saturations. THE metallographic structures most frequently encountered in rifle barrels, and which are illustrated by the accompanying photomicrographs, fall naturally into two groups, distinguished by the method used to produce in the stock a physical condition having the requisite properties. The first group consists 'of "rolled" barrels; that is, barrels subjected to hot working by rolling in or near the critical range. In the second group, the stock, which is smaller in diameter than the first, is upset to form the butt end and is then heat-treated by giving it a quench and a draw. These barrels will be referred to as "heat-treated" barrels. The structure of the rolled barrels resembles closely that of the same steel after annealing. There is the same network of excess ferrite outlining the grain boundaries, but the grains themselves are composed of sorbite rather than pearlite. The grain size is closely related to the rolling temperature. The critical-point curves of this grade of steel, which is approximately 0.50 to 0.60 per cent. of carbon and 1.00 to 1.30 per cent. of manganese, show a single very pronounced point between 1300° and 1350° F. (704° and 732° C.). Barrels rolled within this temperature range give an exceedingly fine grain, shown in Fig. 1. In fact, the grains may be so fine that, at a low magnification, they may be confused with the heat-treated structure discussed below, Fig. 6. A magnification of 500 diameters, however, will always resolve a rolled barrel into the characteristic structure, shown in Fig. 2. As the temperature is increased, the grains are found to be larger. If, on the other hand, the rolling temperature is below the critical range, the structure previous to rolling will not be obliterated, the only effect of rolling being to elongate the coarse sorbite grains in the direction of rolling, Fig. 3. This distortion is greatest at the muzzle. Heat-treated barrels are quenched in oil from above the critical range, which should give a martensitic structure, Fig. 4, but the presence of some troostite in the martensite is frequently noted when the quench has not been sufficiently drastic, Fig. 5. The structure brought about by the subsequent draw is not so striking, though quite as typical. It is sorbitic or sorbito-pearlitic, and under- a low magnification appears

It is always the case with heavy and cheap materials that the area within which they can be economically used depends upon the cost of transportation, and in those days of poor roads and no mechanical means of haulage on them, coal could only be moved a few miles from the mine by any other means than water. The need of better means of transport to the areas west of the mountains had been urged by Washington and many other leaders, but the first turnpike over the Alleghenies only reached the Ohio River at Wheeling, W. Va. in 1818. The James River and Kanawha road reached the Ohio in 1831, that from Winchester, Va. to Parkersburg in 1838, and the road through the Cumberland Gap was completed in 1797. None of these affected the coal industry excepting indirectly by building up some of the river towns which coal could reach. The inadequacy of roads alone to carry the traffic of the rapidly growing interior communities was demonstrated only a few years after the National Pike was completed, and in the early 1820's several of the states embarked upon the construction of a canal system, which had been under discussion for some years. The Erie Canal was opened in 1825 from Lake Erie to the Hudson River through New York; Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland had already started similar projects designed to bring traffic to their principal cities from the interior. The Pennsylvania Canal was started from Columbia, as a railroad extended from Philadelphia to that point, and it followed the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers to Hollidaysburg; thence to Johnstown, a distance of 36 miles, where it consisted of partly railroad and partly inclined planes, the boats being hauled up, and lowered down the planes; from Johnstown the canal followed the Conemaugh, Kiskiminitas and Allegheny Rivers to Pittsburgh, 104 miles. Boats first reached Pittsburgh by this route in 1834. The Chesapeake and Potomac Canal followed the Potomac River from a point above Alexandria above the falls, to Cumberland. This canal was chartered in the eighteenth century and a portion of it was used by traffic in 1800. It was too small to be of much use and was abandoned, and later after many legal and financial vicissitudes was completed to Cumberland, traffic from there starting late in 1850. This date, however, was long after the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had been completed to

The National Labor Board, on June 25, ended its activities preparatory to final, dissolution by the President. No new cases will be heard nor new applications received. Controversies, jointly submitted, that could not be concluded prior to June 30, were assigned to the joint chairmen or a section of the board for disposition. The conclusion of the board's activities marks the passing of. one of the governmental agencies created during the war to further production of war materials. The board was organized under a Presidential proclamation with former President Taft and Frank P. Walsh of Kansas City as joint Chairmen, and with five members representing labor, five employers' representatives, and two members acting for the public. Mr. Walsh resigned soon after the signing of the armistice and was succeeded by Basil M. Manly of Washington. During the year that ended May 31, the hoard received 1245 cases, made awards in 462 cases, dismissed 391 for various cases, referred 315 to specified agencies, and suspended one case. Fifty-three cases remained on the docket because the hoard could not agree, and 23 cases were pending.

The rate of formation of the intermetallic compound, indium antimonide, at the interface between iudium and antimony at 100°C is greatly increased when a composite electrode of indium electrode -posited on antimony is made the cathode in an electrolytic cell. The amount of indium antimonide formed during electrolytic treatment at constant potential appeared to he proportional to the square root of time, but the scatter of the data, particularly at long times, makes it impossible to state this conclzlsi1:ely. The rate constant for the electrochemical synthesis was estimated to he 1.5 x 10-12 sq cm per sec. A similar- set of experiments was conducted in the absence of an applied potential but under otherwise similar conditions. The rate constant lor the thermal synthesis was less than 2 x 10-14 sq cm per, sec, at least two orders of magnitude less than obtained during electrolytic treatment. In a series of electrochemical studies it was observed that intermetallic compounds formed on the surface of polarized electrodes.1'2 The possibility of using this technique for the electrochemical preparation of intermetallic compounds was investigated and subsequently applied to the synthesis of the semiconducting III-V compounds. Gallium antimonide, indium arsenide. indium antimonide, and indium bismuthide were successfully formed by electrodepositing the Group III element from a boiling acid solution onto an electrode made of the Group V element. The following kinetic studies were undertaken on indium antimonide to obtain quantitative information on the rate of formation of this representative III-V compound under a potential gradient. EXPERIMENTAL The electrolytic cell for these experiments was a modified, three-neck, round-bottom, 500-ml distillation flask. Sealed into the side of the flask was a Luggin probe which monitored the surface of the working electrode and extended out of the flask to a small reservoir containing a saturated calomel electrode. The counter electrode was platinum. The three electrodes were connected to a Wenking po-tentiostat which maintained a preselected constant potential near the surface of the working electrode with reference to a saturated calomel electrode. All potentials noted in this paper are with reference to a saturated calomel electrode at 45° ± 5°C. The potential and the current were both monitored using Sargent Model MR recorders. The antimony electrodes were cast in graphite molds to form spheres about 15 mm in diameter with a shank 6 mm in diameter and 10 mm long. A heavy copper wire (12B & S gage) was soldered to this shank. Collodion was applied for protection to the shank and the connecting part of the copper lead. A snug-fitting O-ring was slipped over the shank and the electrode was then fitted into a teflon holder such that only the spherical portion was exposed. The electrode surfaces were cleaned and chemically polished prior to assembly and introduction into the electrolyte by etching in a modified CP-4 solution (50 parts glacial acetic acid, 10 parts concentrated nitric acid, 2 parts 48 pct hydrofluoric acid). The electrolyte was 10-2 M In+3 in 1 MH2So4 and its temperature was held constant by refluxing. The reflux condenser was open to the atmosphere and no temperature correction was made for changes in barometric pressure. The indium concentration in the electrolyte was checked from time to time by the analytical method outlined below for the determination of the amount of indium antimonide formed electrochemically. A schematic of the recorded potential is shown in Fig. 1. At point A the antimony electrode was introduced into the cell and the open-circuit potential recorded. At point B the potentiostat, preset at the desired potential, was switched on. It was switched off at point C and the potential fell to the open-circuit value of the electrodeposited indium. The
