Slimes are usually defined as all material passing a certain-sized sieve, which is invariably the finest sieve employed by each metallurgist in his tests; 100-mesh and 200-mesh have been taken as the limits by different writers in recent volumes of the Transactions ; 150-mesh is common practice. The reader of the first two volumes of Richards 1 is impressed by the inflexibility with which all grinding-arrangements are praised or condemned according as they make little or much slime. Until recently, one of the principal aims of the mill-man was to keep down the slimes. He was obliged to have separate apparatus for sand- and slime-treatment. The latter was sometimes puzzling and erratic. Often it was found most .economical to omit treatment of the slimes entirely, or to store them in immense basins or heaps, waiting for possible future improvements in methods of treatment. Recently, improved processes of agitation and filtration have made possible the successful extraction of values from many slimes. The tendency, when the metal is exceedingly finely disseminated, is to cut out all sand-treatment and to slime everything. These processes have been almost entirely mechanical in their conception, and it is the object of the present paper to show that certain chemical considerations may greatly hinder or assist their successful operation. It has long been a source of dissatisfaction to chemists that their analyses fail to be of much help to the clay-worker; that it is a matter of common occurrence for clays of closely identical ultimate chemical constitution to show the widest possible divergence in physical properties. * Published by permission of the Director of the U. Do not write until you have something to say. Think first; then write. In order to be understood, you must know what you wish to say. Clear writing is the consequence of clear thinking. Therefore consider your subject well before you begin to write; ruminate on it; marshal the salient facts in your mind; saturate yourself with the ideas you wish to express and with cognate ideas; then express yourself deliberately. If you are bubbling over with your subject the words will come, but you might as well expect to sail without a breeze as hope to give life to words without the living thought. Here I may advert to the fact that among the uneducated it is a common expectation to acquire the knack of writing without taking the trouble to study the art of literature. I overheard a woman in a suburban train remark to her neighbor: "I'd like to be able to write well without stopping to think about it". She was one of many that would like to do a thing well without the trouble of thinking; but it cannot be done in respect of anything to which thought is essential. The possession of a good voice does not justify a person in expecting to sing successfully to a large audience; before singing in public one has to master the technique of singing; one has to learn first how to breathe properly, how to enunciate, and many other things. The successful singer is an artist, not a megaphone. Most of us would regard a man or a woman without any training in the art of singing as a fool or an impostor if he or she were to give a public concert, yet we do not recognize the equal foolishness and imposture of persons that write books before they have studied the technique of writing. That the death of Martin Coryell, which occurred at Lambertville, New Jersey, on Monday morning, November 29th, touched the sympathies of a wide circle of professional associates and personal friends, was amply testified by the gathering at the funeral services on Friday. Like his distinguished friend and neighbor, the late Ashbel Welch, Mr. Coryell was one of those pioneers in American engineering to whom we owe the great railway and canal systems which lie at the base of our national prosperity, and who have consequently enjoyed the respect and esteem of their successors of the present generation. Martin Coryell was born July 20th, 1815, at New ope, Rucks County, Pa., and was educated principally in the schools of his native town arid of Lambertville, New Jersey, to which place he returned for permanent residence fifty years later. With the exception of a brief period in youth, during which, to restore his failing health, he learned and practiced for a few months the carpenter's trade, and another brief period, later in life, when he read law for a time in the office of B. H. Brewster, of Philadelphia, afterwards Attorney-General of the United States, Mr. Coryell may be said to have spent his life as an active civil and mining engineer. Even these two episodes can scarcely be said to have been deviations from that profession, since they served to give him more thorough preparation for constructive and administrative work. The Delaware Division Canal, the Raritan Canal, and the Brunswick Canal, are among those upon which Mr. Coryell was employed. For the Raritan Canal Company, under the superintendence of Ashbel Welch, he located the greater part of the Belvidere Railroad (now the Belvidere division of the Pennsylvania Railroad), and directed its construction from Trenton to Lambertville. He was also active as a mining engineer, being one of the early pioneers of mining in the Lake Superior copper region, and had much to do with the development of the Hazleton coalfield and the railroad which has since expanded into the Lehigh Valley system. In 1862, he removed to Wilkes-Barre, where, in 1864, he became manager of the Warrior Run Mining Company. One of the editors

THE following scanty notes on the Roumanian oil-region may serve as an introduction to more detailed future study and description. The Roumauian oil-belt, follows the outer edge of the sweep of the Carpathian Mountains, and may, in a broad sense, be regarded as a prolongation of the Galician belt. It is distributed over a tract of country from 300 to 400 miles in length, with a width of from 15 to 20 miles, and is believed to cover an area of at least 20,000 hectares (59,420 acres). The Government claims that 16,000 to 17,000 hectares of its land is petroliferous. The primary deposits of petroleum are considered to be in the Padeogene (Oligocene) and the Neogene (the salines of the Miocene) formations. Most of the other repositories, especially those of Muntenie, are only secondary, the petroleum there having been introduced by the orogeneric movements which raised the Carpathian Mountains. The oil-field has been divided by the Roumanian survey into two regions, the Flysch and the Sub-Carpathian, as is shown in the accompanying sketch-map, Fig. 1.(p. 518). So far as is yet, known, practically all the seepages and .productive pits and wells are situated oil anticlinals. Those which outcrop in the Flysch region. (called Paleogene anticlinals), as indicated in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, are : Solontz, Middle Oligocene; Moineshti, Moineshti and Tagu-Ocna-beds of the Eocene.

The Army Reorganization Act, which became effective July 1, 1916, contains a provision authorizing the organization of an Officers' Reserve, in which will be included a Corps of Reserve Engineers. There will also be an Enlisted Reserve of skilled workmen in technical lines. The special provisions of the bill relating to the Engineer Officers' Reserve were formulated with the help of the Joint Committee of the several national engineering societies, which has been at work on the matter for over a year with the War Department and Committees of Congress. There were present twelve- Directors, the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and fifteen guests. A committee of three was appointed to draft a suitable resolution of memorial of the services of Joseph Esrey Johnson, Jr. The committee consists of Joseph W. Richards, Chairman, J. V. N. Dorr and Allen H. Rogers. William R. Walker was elected a Director in place of J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Edwin Ludlow was elected a member of the Executive Committee in his stead. George C. Stone was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Membership in place of Mr. Johnson. The following resolutions were then adopted: RESOLVED, That a special business meeting of the Institute be and the same hereby is appointed to be, held at the office of the Institute, No. 29 West 39th Street, Borough of Manhattan, City of New York, on the 27th day of June, 1919, it 8.30 o'clock in the P. M. to consider and take action upon the proposal to change the name of the Institute to "American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Incor-porated," and the further proposal to extend the corporate purposes of the Institute so that it shall, in addition to its other powers, be empowered to promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of, those employed in these industries, by all lawful means.

The symposium on production for the year 1940 contains few papers on the foreign situation. It is probable that the foreign part of next year's symposium will be even shorter. This is due to rigid censorship in various countries, as the question of the volume of petroleum supplies has become one of great strategic importance. This is even more true than in the last war, owing to greater mechanization of armies. 'It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. Excerpts from Circular to Authors In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table I may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not de-terminable frod data available to the author, please inserty; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In sucli cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved') and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Introduction. THE Georgetown mining district is located in Deerlodge county, Mont., about 20 miles west of Anaconda. It lies along the divide between the headwaters of Warm Springs creek, draining eastward, and Flint creek, flowing west and north through the Philipsburg valley. The actual divide is formed by Cable mountain, a narrow ridge running north and south, terminating to the south in low hills overlooking Georgetown lake, and to the north in a high, rugged plateau that falls off to the west to the wide valley of Flint creek. Oil the eastern, or Warm Springs, slope of Cable mountain is the Cable mine, with the Hidden Lake mine a few miles north. On the western slope is the Southern Cross group, with smaller mines, the Twilight, Cincinnati, Red Lion, and Big Bill, at intervals to the northward. The Georgetown mines lie in the hills south of Cable mountain; the Philipsburg mines, of which the Granite Mountain, Bimetallic, Hope, and Trout are the chief, form a separate group to the north, overlooking Flint Creek valley and Philipsburg. (See Fig. 1.1) The region ranges in elevation from 5,000 to 9,000 ft. It is, with the exception of the lower valleys, well timbered with small fir and pine, although Cable mountain and the higher summits to the northward rise slightly above timber line. The main valleys have the smooth contours of glaciation, and their mouths are frequently choked with morainal deposits.

A NUMBER of articles have been published, notably those by R. S. Handy, R. T. Hancock and A. P. Watt in Engineering and Mining Journal, dealing with the calculations involved in ore dressing.. These publications demonstrate both, the importance of the subject and the lack of success in developing a generally recognized method for comparing enrichment effects. Considering that we may wish -to compare enrichment results on similar or dissimilar ores, that we may desire to make the comparison on the basis of either the absolute or the economical efficiency, and that the number of factors upon which the result depends is large, the question arises whether it is possible to set up a positive method for such calculations. In the following pages it is our aim to show that a sure, complete and successful way to overcome existing difficulties has been found. THE high-frequency laboratory induction furnace with a rotating liquid crucible enables research workers to conduct certain investigations heretofore very difficult or impossible to realize because vessels are not obtainable that are capable of resisting the physical conditions or the chemical actions to which they are subjected. Applications for patents covering commercial uses of centrifugal liquid crucibles were filed in the United States in 1919,1 in France in 1925, in the United States and Germany in 1926,2 and in France in 1927.3 In 1928, Schuette and Maier,4 of the Bureau of Mines, reported the construction of a whirling table beneath a high-frequency induction furnace. SHAPE AND SIZE OF CENTRIFUGAL LIQUID CRUCIBLES When a vessel containing a liquid is rotated, the inner surface of the liquid takes the shape f a paraboloid under the simultaneous action of centrifugal force and gravity. The internal dimensions of the paraboloid rotating liquid crucible are governed by the diameter of the container and its speed of rotation. Melted Wood's metal was poured into cylinders 2 ½ in. in diameter, which were rotated at 180, 300, and 468 r.p.m. When the metal was solid, a slurry of plaster of Paris was added, and rotation continued until the plaster had set. To me, as to many other students of railroad needs, the necessity for reducing the dead weight in railroad rolling stock, both passenger and freight, has been apparent for, many years. The problem of weight reduction of passenger cars is so entirely different from that of freight cars, is so much more to the fore at the present moment and would seem to be so much nearer solution, that I shall confine myself in these remarks to the former. On the surface of things there would appear to be no close association of thought between the decline in traffic on the railroads, which is largely responsible for their present deplorable financial condition, and new metal alloys. It sounds like a trick riddle a school boy might propound to his parents. But that there is a relationship between the two, and one that bids fair to be of great mutual benefit to the railroads and the makers of .high-strength metal alloys, I hope I shall be able to show before I have finished. To make the situation understandable to those who are not entirely familiar with the problems of railroad management, and, who feel that the railroads have not moved as rapidly as they should in the direction of greater use of newer materials and newer appliances, I shall have to review briefly the course of recent railroad history. If in this part of my talk I seem to the professional man to be a little off key I feel sure my remarks will be fully appreciated by the business man who cannot understand why he is not making better headway in selling things to the railroads. To do this I shall have to go back to war times for a moment.

AS methods for measuring fiber textures become more exact, it becomes justifiable to scrutinize an observed pole-density curve for evidence of minor texture components. These are disclosed by minor maxima or abnormally broad major maxima. One possible source of these minor components is twinning of the main component. In cubic metals and alloys, there are two kinds of twins: 1) Annealing twins in face-centered cubic metals. These are reflection twins on {Ill), and they can be expected to be present in recrystallization textures. 2) Deformation twins in body-centered cubic metals. These are shear twins on (112). Although usually formed only by impact, they might conceivably be present in the deformation texture of severely cold-drawn wire. Fortunately, both kinds of twinning lead to the same orientation relationships. It thus becomes possible to prepare a single list of angles between various planes in parent crystal and twin, which is helpful in examining pole-density curves for evidence of twinning in any cubic metal or alloy. Such a list of interplanar angles is given in Table I. This table consists of three parts, corresponding to the three major texture components—<100>, <110>, and <111>-most commonly found in the fiber textures of cubic metals. This paper embodies the results of theoretical studies concerning gas reservoirs, especially the effect of drilling programs of various intensities upon pressure depletion and ultimate recoveries. The primary objective has been to determine the net quantity of recoverable gas that could be obtained as a result of each additional well, in comparison with the gas . that might be secured from a single well ideally placed with respect to both acreage and geological structure. No method is yet known whereby the relative merits of intensive and sparse drilling can be compared experimentally; a reservoir must either be drilled closely or developed with wide spacing, but both programs cannot be conducted simultaneously. Hence, the analytical method seems to be the only approach to the problem. While the present state of our theoretical knowledge does not offer a precise solution to the problem of gas flow in sand bodies, it takes such appropriate cognizance of the limitations of the methods used as to restrict any answer obtained to the realm of engineering accuracy. In solving the problem for the average gas field, it was found that practically the same answers resulted as to pressure distribution, regardless of the size of the drainage radius, even though the latter was assumed to vary from a few feet as a minimum to that of the entire reservoir as a maximum. Such limits represent extreme possibilities; therefore, the practical conditions that are associated with normal development programs, in which wells are placed in the center of tracts varying in size from 40 to 640 acres, will of necessity result in less extreme variations than those indicated in the tables accompanying this paper. Stated more concisely, the amount of gas unrecovered at abandonment (of the particular field used for illustrative purposes) will lie somewhere between 4.6 and 6 per cent of the total original content, no matter how intensively the field is drilled. The Jeffrey operation of Canadian Johns -Manville Co. , Ltd., at Asbestos, Quebec, is considered to be the world&apos;s largest asbestos mine. It accounts for approximately 37% of Canadian production of chysotile asbestos and about 13% of world production. Rated capacity is over 600,000 stpy (540,000 mtpy) of fiber, of which well over 90% is exported to the United States and seventy other countries. During the early 1970&apos;s the company completed a five-year modernization and expansion program which included the installation of a unique 72 in. by 93 in. gyratory crusher to handle the extremely blocky serpentinized peridotite ore. Because of the large diameter of this crusher the top ring of the shell was made in two halves which were bolted together. Hundred-ton trucks dump from two sides of the crusher into the 200 st (180 mt) dump pocket which is equipped with dust collecting ducts in the walls of the other two sides. The installation was designed to accommodate the eventual use of 200 -ton trucks. Crushed ore at a. size of 7 ½ in. (191 mm) falls into a uniquely designed crushed ore pocket equipped with three sloping steel sides and one vertical side, which make it totally live. Infrared heaters installed in back of the hopper sides prevent the ore from sticking to the steel. Another interesting feature is an eccentric removal bridge which is permanently mounted inside the crushed ore pocket. The two halves of the bridge are let down by electric winches to form a platform on which the eccentric cart travels and from where maintenance is done. Level indications in the crushed ore pocket are by radioactive indicators. Under the crushed ore pocket is a 72 in. by 28 ft (1.83 m by 8.5 m) apron feeder which operates at 7. 2 to 50 fpm (2. 3 to 15. 3 mpm). Crushed ore is discharged to a picking belt for tramp removal. A crossbelt magnetic separator is also mounted over this belt. Permanently mounted belt reels are also situated over the picking belt to facilitate the changing of this unit. A 60 in. (1. 52 m) wide takeaway belt then elevates the crushed ore to t.he surface facilities. Instead of discharging to a crushed ore stockpile, the takeaway conveyor delivers the ore to a 300-ton distribution bin. The ore is then screened and secondary crushed; and the plus ¾ in. (19 m) is "stored in a 3,000 ton bin while the minus ¾ in. is dried and then sent to storage. This system of directly screening primary crushed ore is similar to that used at both the Endako molybdenum and Gibraltar copper operations in British Columbia. While it would seem connecting processing equipment directly to a primary crusher would have an adverse effect on the crusher availability, the 94% of scheduled time this crusher

Discussion of the paper of S. E. Bretherton, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1481 to 1487. S. E., BRETHERTON, San Francisco, Cal.:-Since preparing my paper, our chemist, F. L. Wilson, has been experimenting with Leadville, Colo., oxidized zinc ore and Leadville zinc sulphides containing lead, operating upon 40-1b. lots at a time. His results on Leadville sulphides are as follows: The raw ore contained a trace of gold, 5.04 oz. of silver, 19.1 per cent of zinc, and 7.24 per cent of lead. After roasting the ore contained a trace of gold, 5.72 oz. of silver, 0.75 per cent of copper, 21.7 per cent of zinc, and 8.29 per cent of lead. The loss in weight by leaching was 38.8 per cent. The extraction was 42.8 per cent of the copper, 80.6 per cent of the zinc, 7.1 per cent of the lead, 0.64 per cent of the silver, and no gold. The little .silver that is extracted would be thrown down with the copper when precipitating it from the zinc and both thrown hack into the residue to be smelted. There would be no trouble in smelting the residue with nearly all the sulphur eliminated and containing less than 7 per cent. of zinc. On zinc carbonates containing silicates the results are not satisfactory. H. O. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :¬The paper by Mr. Bretherton upon the application of ammonia and carbonic acid to the recovery of zinc as oxide from roasted sulphide ore is of interest to me, as the first installation of the Schnabel process for the extraction of zinc from a mixture of zinc oxide, lead oxide (with some cupric oxide), and pellets of enriched lead, produced in steaming liquated zinc-silver-lead crust of the Parkes process, was made at Lautenthal, Harz mountains, where I was chemist. In that capacity I carried out numerous experiments on the Schnabel process, was active in the erecting of the plant, and later had charge of it. After the Lautenthal plant had been in operation for some time a similar one was built at Hoboken-les-Anvers, but both have been abandoned, as the wet process could not compete with the distillation of the liquated zinc-silver-lead crust, now used universally in the Parkes process.

DOES hand-sorting of mill feed pay? The fact that the practice is so general would seem to indicate that there must be good reasons for following it; yet, to my mind, the advantage in many cases is doubtful enough to invite a thorough discussion of the subject, in an effort to determine under what conditions hand-sorting does pay. A typical sorting plant in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district handles about 800 tons of mine-run ore per day. The material is run over a grizzly with about 4-in. opening; the oversize is crushed to about 4-in. size and joins the undersize, and the whole product is washed and screened on trommels with about 1 ½ -in. openings. The oversize from these trommels is spread on a belt and the waste and first-class ore are sorted out by hand, the residue being further crushed, and passes, together with the trommel undersize, into the mill feed bins. About 50 tons of shipping ore and 150 tons of waste are sorted out per day, leaving about 600 tons of mill feed. To sort out this material requires 20 ore sorters and five bosses and repairmen. The normal cost of hand-sorting is about 16 c. per ton of run-of-mine ore, or 65 c. per ton of material sorted out. I believe that straight crushing and milling of the run-of-mine ore, in this case, is not only cheaper, but is metallurgically moree canonical and efficient than hand-sorting followed by milling of the residue. At one of the Bunker Hill rock-houses, 1250 tons of run-of-mine ore are reduced to pass 30-mm., or about 1 ¼ -in. opening in six hours, requiring five men. The equipment and the power consumed are not greatly different from that required in a sorting plant of the same capacity, and the normal cost of thus preparing the feed for milling is under 3 c. per ton of mine product. The relative cheapness of this method as against hand-sorting is thus clearly established, the saving being about 13 c. per ton. If there is any virtue in hand-sorting, then, it must lie in the metallurgical results achieved.

INTRODUCTION PROBABLY no other type of equipment is now being introduced into American underground mines about which less is known and about which there is more misinformation than the Diesel mine locomotive. Any equipment installed underground brings with it hazards that were not present before, and it is the purpose of this paper to show that Diesel-powered equipment can be used with safety in underground mining if certain feasible but very important precautions are taken. Diesel locomotives are not new in underground mining, since they have been used successfully in European mines for at least 19 years, but their use in American mines is exceedingly limited; so far as is known, only five Diesel mine locomotives are operating at present in United States mines. Diesel locomotives were permitted underground in Great Britain for the first time in 1939, and the rapid increase in the number in use in those mines, testifies to their safety and efficiency. More than 1300 Diesel mine locomotives are in use in European mines, according to the latest statistics; these locomotives are employed in coal, iron, lead-zinc and mercury mines. So far as is known, the Diesel mine locomotive has not yet caused an explosion or mine fire, and has not been the cause of any fatalities from toxic gases in the mines in which it has been used. ADJUSTMENTS OF DIESEL ENGINES FOR UNDERGROUND USE A Diesel engine adjusted to work in an underground mine should not be confused with the same engine adjusted for use outside the mine. Adjustment of the air:fuel ratio for engines that are used on the surface is intended to give the maximum fuel economy, and little or no attention is given to the chemical composition of the exhaust gas produced. Many such engines are poorly adjusted and perhaps poorly maintained, with the result that the engine emits smoke in quantity as well as the disagreeable odor familiarly associated with Diesel engines. The air:fuel ratio in the case of Diesel engines operated on the surface is generally around 15:1; that is, 15 lb of air to burn 1 lb of fuel. Diesel engines adjusted to work underground usually have an air:fuel ratio of about 20:I, as at this ratio the minimum quantity of toxic gases is given off in the engine exhaust. Diesel engines operated underground must be maintained in better condition than similar engines used on the surface; otherwise, the smoke emitted in the exhaust becomes objectionable if not unendurable. Practically normal air is required for safe operation of Diesel engines underground or in confined places; failure to provide virtually normal air for Diesel engine operation is almost certain to result in trouble. Bureau of Mines engineers have determined that the air in which a Diesel operates in confined places should contain less than 1/2 pct of carbon dioxide and at least 20 pct of

THOUGH born in England-on Nov. 23, 1372 William Wraith was brought to this country at the age of ten. Eight years later he entered the University of Illinois, transferring to the Michigan College of Mines where he got his E.M. in 1894. For the next three years he was a mine surveyor for the fuel department of the Santa Fe Railroad. Then he got into the copper-mining industry, which has occupied his attention for the last forty years. First he was engineer, at Butte, for the Boston & Montana company, and then helped to build the Washoe smelter at Anaconda, of which he was assistant superintendent from 1906 to 1913. The Anaconda company then sent him to Salt Lake City as manager of its subsidiary.

Coal mining is a hazardous occupation, but tremendous progress has been made in reducing accidental injuries and deaths in the mines. Let us take a look at the hazards in coal mining and the accident record. COAL MINE SAFETY TODAY Underground coal mining creates underground open areas, rooms, and haulageways. The roof (top) and ribs (sides) become highly stressed, and because coal and slate are very weak in tension or compression they frequently fail and fall from the roof and ribs unexpectedly. This is the most hazardous condition miners must cope with underground, and it has consistently produced the greatest number of fatal injuries in the coal mining industry. Only very sophisticated equipment, but which is not yet practical for use underground, is able to detect the buildup of stresses that may eventually lead to a roof or rib fall. Today&apos;s miner still looks for fresh cracks in the roof or rib, listens for the "drummy" sound, and feels vibrations from loose material in the roof, when tapped with a sounding stick, in order to find material which may fall. Once located, it is barred down, but if this is not possible, it is then secured to prevent it from falling. The next great& hazard is the equipment used to mine or haul coal. It is large, heavy, reacts quickly to its controls and is operated in con- fined areas with low lighting levels. The record of the last few years shows that fatalities attributable to mining and hauling equipment are about equally divided. Thorough training as part of a complete safety program is necessary to teach employees the hazards of loose roof, rib, and machine operation in order that they can work in the safest way possible. Unless there is such a program, the trade is learned by trial and error with a resulting tragic.
