The vapor pressure of zinc in equilibrium with solid ß AgZn alloys has been measured by the dew-point method. The thermodynamic activities of silver, and the molar heats of formation have been calculated. Similar measurements have been made for the ternary alloys formed by adding gold to AgZn. An apparent particle size effect has been observed for AgZn filings. The vapor pressure of zinc over filings is 15 to 20 pct higher than over the solid alloys. STATISTICAL methods have been used to inter pret the thermodynamic activities of the components of a solid solution in terms of average equilibrium atomic configurations. In some cases, the atomic arrangements can be measured by X-ray methods, and the results are usually expressed in terms of short range order parameters. Only in the cases of Cu³Au and AgAu have there been sufficient X-ray and thermodynamic data to verify the assumed correlation between the X-ray and the thermodynamic measurements. In Cu³Au the agreement is good; negative deviations from Raoult's law are observed and the number of Cu-Au nearest neighbor pairs predicted on the basis of the thermodynamic treatments agrees quite well with the number of such pairs observed by the X-ray methods. The ß brass alloys present a different set of conditions. The ordering is so rapid in these alloys that the disordered state cannot be retained on quenching. In contrast, the disordered state in CuAu is easily retained on quenching. On heating, the ordered ß brass loses its long range order continuously as the critical temperature is approached; in Cuau the order decreases slightly on heating and then drops discontinuously to zero at the critical temperature. These differences indicate that the short range order configurations in ß brass systems may be of a different character than in Cudu systems. However, X-ray measurements of local order cannot be made in the Cu-Zn alloys because of the similarity in scattering factors. The alloy AgZn is isomorphous with CuZn, however, and recent experiments have indicated that there is a good possibility of observing short range order in this system. Another complication arises in the case of ß AgZn. The disordered body-centered cubic structure exists above 280°C. On quenching from above this temperature an ordered structure of the cesium-chloride type is formed. On slow cooling, however, a complex hexagonal structure, the 3 phase, is produced; and if an ordered quenched alloy is reheated the phase begins to form above 80°C. It is thus difficult to study local order by X-ray methods in single crystals of AgZn since the C phase formed on heating does not necessarily return to a single crystal of the original orientation. An examination is made of the various factors influencing drilling rate and drill bit life in various diameter holes. It is concluded that drill bits in the size range 4% to 6 1/4 in. can be used to attain substantially the some daily drilling progress as conventional size bits in soft rock drilling operations. An examination of the most important factors influencing "hazard of losing the hole" in the different hole size results in the conclusion that the smaller hole sizes can probably be drilled at reasonably low risk. However, this risk will be somewhat greater in the smaller diameter holes, requiring that special drilling and mud engineering practices be used to make small diameter holes practicable in soft rock drilling operations. An engineering analysia is made of the power and hydraulic requirements of several drill string-hole combinations to test the feasibility of drilling .small diameter holes in soft rock areas. Large econormies in rig power requirements appear possible by drilling .smaller .size holes in these operations. INTRODUCTION The industry now is re-examining the utility of small diameter holes in the light of substantial technical advances made in recent years. Faced with increasing cost of finding reserves and with proration after developing them, the industry must either develop methods of economizing or receive a lower rate of return on investments. Small diameter holes appear to involve an attractive method of economizing. Our objective is to determine if this is technically possible in soft rock operations. Soft rock, as used in this report, refers to those formations of a "drill-ability" corresponding to that of all Gulf Coast formations shallower than and frequently including much of the Eocene rock system. An important phase of technology which we shall examine is relative drilling rate and bit footage which may be obtained with various size bits. Rig operating efficiency, particularly as influenced by hazard, is also discussed in detail. The technical conclusions resulting from these examinations are used to develop sample drill string design and rig horsepower requirements for drilling holes as smaH as 4 3/4 in. and larger. The principal criterion used for the drill string design is that approximately the same daily drilling progress would be possible in all size holes in soft rock operations. This facilitates a comparison of rig size required for drilling the hole sizes in the range between 4 3/4 and 8 3/4 in. BROAD PROBLEM OF DRILLING RATE AND BIT FOOTAGE The three factors controlling daily drilling progress are: (1) drilling rate of bit while on bottom turning, (2) bit footage, and (3) rig operating efficiency. Let us look now at the first two of these factors. Drilling technology has progressed to the point that a semi-quantitative analysis of the effect of various operating variables upon these factors can be made. Those factors which apparently limit both drilling rate and bit footage for bits now in use are: (1) bit design, (2) weight on bit, (3) hydraulic cleaning capacity for bit cutting surfaces and hole bottom, and (4) rotary speed. (We neglect the effect of mud and formation properties because these factors arc the same for the various size bits.

The heat treatmmt of plutonium was studied using the Jominy end-quenching technique commonly used for determining the hardenability of steel. Plutonium specimens were end-guenched from temperatures in each of the ß, y, d, d') and E phases. One series of specimens with a low-iron content, 165 pprn Fe, and another gvoup with a high-iron content, 678 pprn Fe, were used in order to study the effect of a Pu-Pu,Fe eutectic network on the hardness and micro-structure. Hardness traverses indicated no significant variations in hardness with either cooling rate or quench temperature. Metallographic studies indicated major effects on microstructure. Grain size was found to vary markedly with quenching temperature and cooling rate. It was determined that the Pu-PueFe eutectic network could be modified extensively by heat treatment, including spheroi -dization in the y phase and 6 phase below 413°C. An unidentified spheroidal inclusion was observed to go into solution in the delta and higher temperature phases. 1 HE element plutonium is unique among metals in that it has six allotropic forms in the solid state.' These have been designated' as the a, ß, y, d, d', and phases. The respective phase transformations occur at approximate temperatures of 122", 210°, 319°, 450°, and 480°C with a melting point at 640°C. With this number of phase transformations it becomes pertinent to consider the effect of heat treatment and cooling rate in the various phases on the microstructure and hardness of plutonium. To determine; the effect of a wide range of cooling rates, the Jominy end-quenching technique was applied to cylindrical plutonium specimens. In addition, since the presence of iron in amounts greater than 500 pprn is common in plutonium and results in a network of the Pu-Pu6Fe eutectic, it was decided to study heat treatment effects on two bomb reduced plutonium buttons with different iron contents. A low iron button containing 165 ppm Fe and a high iron button containing 678 ppm Fe were selected for this comparison. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Experimental Material. The cylindrical bars for Jominy quenching were cast from button stock in vacuo in MgO coated graphite molds. Metal pouring temperature was approximately 950°C and the molds were preheated to 300°C. The castings were machined to 0.5 in. diam. by 2.5 in. long cylinders. Chemical analysis and density data for the two groups of Jominy specimens containing different iron contents are presented in Table I. Except for iron, heats 19-12-1 and 20-2-1 are comparable within the limits of analytical accuracy. Representative specimens from the low-iron and high-iron bars were taken for metallographic examination. The low iron specimen was found to have extensive microcracking, Fig. 1. In addition, numerous unidentified spheroidal inclusions were present, Fig. 17. The average grain size of the low-iron plutonium is 0.068 mm, Fig. 4. In the high-iron plutonium, a Pu-Pu6Fe eutectic network is prominent, Fig. 7. The average size of the network is 0.100 mm. Unidentified spheroidal inclusions were also common in the high-iron plutonium. The average grain size of the high-iron plutonium is 0.036 mm. Experimental Technique. A Jominy end-quenching fixture was fabricated for glove box use. A 2.5 in. water height was used with an orifice of 0.250 in. ID. The orifice to specimen distance was maintained at 0.5 in. Annealing temperatures of 160°, 265°, 400°, 465°, and 535°c were chosen for the study of the effect of quenching from ß, y, d, d', and e phases on microstructure and hardness. During quenching, cooling curves were obtained from the Jominy specimens at distances from the quenched end of 1/16, 1/8, 3/8, 3/4, 1-1/4, and 2 in. Cooling rate calculations were made from the cooling curves for temperature intervals of 100° to 110° 160" to 170°, 330" to 340°, 420° to 430°, and 490° to 500°c. The knowledge-feigning, theory- straining mining engineer." -Anonymous INTRODUCTION Taxes levied against mining properties and operations are a critical cost in the economic evaluation of mining investments. Indeed, taxes represent a substantial cost of doing business in the minerals industry and often have a significant impact on corporate investment decisions. A good example was the postponement of mineral development in the state of Wisconsin, primarily because of what was perceived to be excessive taxes imposed by that state. In many respects mining investments are no different from other industrial investments. Astute taxing authorities should recognize that geologic endowment is a necessary but clearly not a sufficient condition for mineral investments. The fact that a mineral deposit exists does not necessarily mean that it will ultimately be developed-a point that many taxing authorities fail to recognize. While it is true that ore deposits are not mobile in the sense that they cannot be physically moved to a district having more favorable taxes, corporate investment capital certainly is mobile and flows to ventures which maximize wealth to the firm. In short, higher taxes reduce project yields and tend to drive investment capital elsewhere. The appropriate type and level of taxation imposed upon the mining industry continues to be a very controversial and emotion-charged topic. Mining activities have been taxed at various levels over the years due to widely differing taxation philosophies. Location has also influenced taxation policies, as evidenced by the diversity of tax laws and assessment procedures applied to mineral deposits by the various states. Indeed, mineral taxation varies from state to state, from county to county, and from one mineral commodity to another. Whether or not a given tax is appropriate for a specific mineral deposit, or even an industry, is a difficult problem to assess. First, the type or kind of tax which should be imposed must be considered. Second, it is most important to define a fair and unambiguous base against which to levy the tax. Finally, one must consider the tax rate to be applied to this base. It is the combination of these two components

IN the study of the rare earths at the authors' laboratory, methods have been devised for preparing pure rare earths and many of their properties'- have been determined. Very little information is found in the literature on the properties of europium metal, which is the scarcest of the naturally occurring rare earths. Since we have recently prepared europium in appreciable quantities, we are in a position to describe the method of preparation and some of the properties of this metal. Metallic europium was first prepared by Klemm and Bommera who heated a mixture of potassium and EuC1, in vacuo, and obtained a mixture of europium metal and KC1. Trombe4 electrolyzed a molten salt bath containing NaC1, KC1 and EuC1, and collected the europium in a molten cadmium electrode as a cadmium alloy. The cadmium was subsequently removed by distillation but the properties of the residue indicate that pure europium was not obtained. McCoy attempted to prepare europium by distilling mercury from europium amalgam, but the stability of the Eu-Hg intermetallic compounds prevented a complete separation of the two elements. The preparation of very pure europium was suggested by previous work in this laboratory1,4 in which ytterbium and samarium were prepared by heating the respective sesquioxides with lanthanum metal turnings to 1450°C in vacuo and distilling ytterbium and samarium from the mixtures. Subsequently, small test experiments showed that europium also could be prepared by this method. A more detailed version of this method was used in the work described in this paper. Klemm and Bommer3 found by X-ray analysis that the metal had a body-centered cubic (bcc) structure with a lattice constant a, = 4.582 ± 0.00A (converted from kX units), with a bulk density of 5.30 g per cu cm. They found europium to be weakly ferromagnetic. Spedding, et al,7 found a,, to be 4.606 ± 0.001A. Barrett' showed that the bcc structure persists throughout the temperature range 5 to 3000K with a, at 5, 78, and 300°K being 4.551 ± 0.003, 4.551 ± 0.004 and 4.577 ± 0.001A, respectively. Trombe1 described europium as being iron gray, malleable, about as hard as neodymium and not attacked by cold water. He estimated the melting point to be between 1100 and 1200°C. Single isothermal sections were constructed for the titonium-rich corners of the systems Ti-Fe-O, Ti-Cr-O, and Ti-Ni-0 with a view to locating the shape and disposition of the ternary intermediate-phase fields for the compounds isomorphous with Fe3W3C. IN a previous note,' it was reported that a group of ternary intermediate phases existed which occurred in the general composition range Ti,X,O-Ti&O where X was one of the following elements: copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, or manganese. In two instances, binary intermediate phases occurred (Ti²Cu and Ti²Ni) which appeared to be isomorphous. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the phases could be indexed on a cubic lattice whose cell edge was of the order of 11 kX. Karlsson2 stated that the line extinctions and line intensities indicated that these phases were isomorphous with Fe³W³C and therefore belonged to the space group Oh. This author also noted that no unique phase of this type occurred at the composition Ti,Cr,O. This latter statement was accepted as true at the time the previous technical note was written.' However, work continued along these lines and that reported here has shown that a phase isomorphous with Fe³W³C does exist in the vicinity of the composition Ti³Cr³O but not at or near Ti4 Cr²O. The lattice parameter of this phase was found to be 13.01 kX. Metallographic examination of both as-cast and annealed specimens of these supposed ternary oxide phases disclosed structures which were far from single phase in many instances. It was considered a point of some interest to locate more positively the composition coordinates of the single-phase fields. To this end, single isothermal sections for the systems Ti-Fe-O (1000°C), Ti-Cr-0 (1000°C), and Ti-Ni-0 (900"C) were constructed. Phase relationships were studied by both X-ray diffraction and metallotrra~hic methods. Allovs were prepared as 10 g buttons by melting in a noncon-sumable electrode, water-cooled copper crucible arc-melting furnace using a helium atmosphere. Oxygen was introduced quantitatively by the use of weighed amounts of TiO² or TiO. Iodide titanium and the purest available alloying metals were used. All results are discussed in terms of the nominal composition of the melts. Previous experience with making oxygen-rich alloys had shown that oxygen losses were not significant if a homogeneous melt was produced. Weight-loss measurements were used to check loss in metallics during melting. Anneals were conducted in evacuated Vycor bulbs, and annealing times ranged from 24 hr at 1000 °C to 48 hr at 900°C. To achieve equilibrium in certain sluggish alloys, seven-day anneals were used. Debye-Scherrer powder patterns were taken in a 14 cm diam camera using filtered CuK radiation (K² = 1.541232 kX; K., = 1.53739 kX). Specimens were prepared by crushing and screening previously annealed buttons. In general, the X-ray diffraction results were used to identify the major phases, while the metallographic examinations were more useful in indicating the number of phases present. By the use of the combined results and general fundamental rules governing ternary equilibrium, it was possible to construct isothermal sections in good detail. In some instances where auxiliary lattice-parameter data were available, it was possible to lay down tie lines and to locate more positively corners of three-phase fields. Isothermal Section of the System Ti-Fe-O at 1000°C The binary systems Ti-O³ and Ti-Fe4 have been published. Binary phases, TiO, TiFe, and TiFe2, are likely to be encountered in the titanium-rich corner of the system. The structures are NaCl (Bl), CsCl (B2), and MgZn, (C14) types, respectively. Although preliminary X-ray diffraction studies indicated the presence of a ternary phase in the composition range Ti,Fe,O-TiJ?e,O, metallographic examination of two specimens at these compositions revealed the presence of other phases. As is well known, many questions affecting the properties and uses of a metal cannot be answered without careful consideration of the state of purity realized in the various operations of preparation, refining, or special treatment that have brought the product to its final state. The occurrence of an impurity in minute quantity offers no guarantee that its effect will be inconsiderable because dissolved substances often modify the properties of a metal quite out of proportion to their concentration. In such cases the determination of solid solubility must be accepted as a problem of considerable difficulty, requiring the use of especially purified materials and methods not ordinarily used in the metallurgical laboratory. This aspect of the equilibrium between metals and their oxides is especially important and a search for fundamental data reveals little except .conflicting opinion even concerning the systems of common occurrence and interest. Rhines and Mathewson1 in 1934 studied the solubility of oxygen in solid copper by annealing to equilibrium in air and gave reasons for the failure of other methods, notably the ordinary procedure of heat-treatment followed by microscopic examination, to yield reliable results. In this paper, a similar study has been made of the solubility of oxygen in cobalt. The simple theory of this method is outlined below.

A discussion of modern developments in beneficiation of fine sizes of anthracite, this paper includes a description of the plant flowsheet, an analysis of operating results, and a summary of fundamentals of mineral separation relative to plant operation. DURING the past several years Lehigh Naviga-tion Coal Co. has installed equipment at Tamaqua and Lansford collieries for cleaning and sizing No. 4 buckwheat —3/32 + 3/64 in. and for recovering and cleaning flotation coal —20 + 200 mesh at Tamaqua colliery. Papers describing some of these installations have been presented to AIME. At Coaldale colliery, however, methods used to clean fine coal were inadequate and inefficient. Management decided upon a thorough investigation of all existing processes before building a plant to treat the combined three sizes mentioned. Investigation, carried out on company property and at other plants, entailed a study of hydrotators, hydroclassifiers, tables, spirals, flotation machines, methods of screening, and methods of dewatering. On the basis of this investigation a flowsheet was designed which necessarily excluded many processes in use, and the writers wish to emphasize that no criticism is implied by omission of processes or machines. A determining factor in selection of many machines was the policy of standardizing equipment wherever possible. Flowsheet and Operational Data The first principle to be considered in designing of any plant is efficiency of cleaning as related to laws of classification. Beneficiation of coal may be described as separation of two materials having different specific gravities. Although there is an inherent ash content even in the purest coal which slightly affects its specific gravity, it is recognized that many particles are true middlings. The percentage of these particles allowable in the final product depends upon the ultimate ash, or specifications of the consumer. Richards in his study of free settling and hindered settling classification' determined that particles of equal size and different specific gravities had unequal settling velocities. He also determined a definite size relationship for equal settling velocities with free settling and hindered settling conditions. Considering the design of machines used to clean No. 4 and No. 5 buckwheat, it may be assumed that both free settling and hindered settling conditions exist and that ratio of size for practical operations is between the established values. The essential factor is that the more efficiently and closely sized the feed is maintained, the more nearly perfect the resulting separation. Flowsheet design was governed primarily by factors related to the 1200 to 1500 tons per hr feed to the main plant. It should be stressed that because of the many sources of supply from mine and stripping, the physical characteristics of this feed varied considerably. The most significant influence was varying percentage of fines, necessitating that all machines be capable of operating under maximum peak load during periods of surge. Since cleaning practice is a wet process, about 9000 gal per min containing 14 to 15 pct solids, or 350 tons per hr, must be treated. This slurry contained all the fines, or —3/32 in., but also percentages of oversize, up to 1 % in., dependent on spills or breaks in screen jackets, a not uncommon occurrence in preparation plant practice. The flowsheet developed is shown in Fig. 1. Circled numbers represent points of sampling. Table I gives operational data including size, ash by size, composite ash, rate of flow in gallons per minute, percent solids dry weight, and average tons of solids per hour. It should be noted that these results are subject to human error in sampling practice. Detailed information reported is a representative evaluation of plant operation.

By comparing two longwall operations, one begun in 1956 and the other in 1960, the author is able to demonstrate the increases in production and performance made possible by longwall mining. These achievements have been brought about by continuous development of longwall mining equipment and associated roof supports. Because of this progress, longwall mining is able to provide, under proper conditions, high production per man-shift, remarkable cost savings, dependable roof control, safe working conditions and truly continuous production. It may seem odd that the title of this paper is not simply "Longwall Mining" but instead "Progress in Longwall Mining." However, the word "Progress" definitely has its place in longwall mining. If it had not been for progress in the development of longwall mining equipment and roof supports, the longwall mining method would not be able to compete in production and performance with modem coal mining machines. The longwall mining method was practiced at the beginning of the century and there were several successful operations in coal fields in Illinois. In those early days of longwall mining, the coal was undercut by hand 2 to 2.5 ft at the bottom of the seam and packwalls were built in the gob to support the roof. The roof eventually subsided and the weight of the subsiding roof was used to ride the face and break the undercut coal. Utilizing natural weight to soften the coal face is still practiced in modern longwall mining; however, the packwalling method has been replaced by the caving method and the roof is now supported by yielding steel roof supports and forepoling steel headers. The purpose of these yielding-type roof supports is to provide a safe working area for the crew along the entire longwall face, to permit continuous mechanical mining across the prop free face, and to provide a strong resistance for the roof by forming an even breaking line at the gob for the roof to cave. Roof supports and associated forepoling headers should be kept as close as possible to the face in order to prevent a caving between face and supports, especially under friable roof. This means that the coal should be extracted in small slices, allowing only a narrow roof area to be exposed and unsupported. The coal planer with its relatively high cutting velocity of 75 ft per min provides such an extraction of coal and has proved its high performance under difficult mining conditions. Since 1951, several longwall faces in southem West Virginia and Pennsylvania which have been equipped with the coal planer and friction-type manual roof supports have been successfully operated. Compared to today's longwall mining, these longwall faces required such a large crew, primarily to handle the roof supports, that the actual high production per shift was charged with too high a labor cost, thereby decreasing the tons per man. Yet, even then the longwall faces outperformed the conventional mining system under the same conditions. In order to demonstrate the progress that has been made in the development of longwall mining, a comparison will be made between a longwall face in Arkansas which was installed in 1956 and a modemized longwall face started in 1960 in southern West Virginia. LONGWALL MINING IN 1956 The 320-ft longwall face was developed in a 32-in. thick coal seam near Greenwood, Ark. The method of mining the 320-ft coal block was the advancing system in which three entries on either side of the face were driven ahead of the advancing longwall face. The face was equipped with a coal planer and a Panzer conveyor; timbering was done with wooden timbers and cribs. The roof supports were set without any pattern. The crew to operate the planer and to handle the roof supports (timbers and cribs) consisted of 15 men per shift. During a period of approximately eight monthsof single shift operating time, the average tonnage produced in this relatively low seam amounted to about 263 tons of clean coal per shift. To show the development in the coal plow from then until now, it should be pointed out that the standard plow was used in this operation. The plow was equipped with rigid bottom bits which could not be adjusted if the plow started to climb, thereby leaving bottom coal to be recovered by pick hammers end causing delays in production. A criterion for stability of a lamellar structure in two-phase alloys ulas derived froflr perturbation analysis of the steady-state solutions for eutectic growth. Both the mass and thermal diffusion were considered with boundary conditions for coupled lamellar growth. The concept of an effective liquidus slope was introduced. Excellent agreement was found with the experiments of Mollard and Flemings and the theory predicted a range of compositions on one side of the eulectic composition in which stable growth may occur with zero temperature gradient. The lamellar structure was found to be more stable than predicted by simple constitutional supercooling. The effect of impurity additions was also considered. DIRECTIONALLY solidified eutectic alloys may have a structure consisting of parallel plates or rods. It is important to know the range of composition and growth conditions that produce this ideal composite structure. Breakdown of the planar solid-liquid interface during growth may lead to a dendritic or cellular structure as in single-phase alloys. In the case of single-phase alloys, the concept of constitutional supercooling1 may explain breakdown, but in two-phase alloys the concept is no longer valid because the melting point is not given by the liquidus of one phase. Both phases must be considered in the mass and thermal diffusion problem. In the following theory a boundary condition at the solid-liquid interface was determined by using the steady-state equations of Jackson and ~unt' to relate the average temperature and composition of the liquid at the interface. Then a sinusoidal perturbation in the shape of the interface was introduced to test for stability as in the analysis of Mullins and ~ekerka.~ The wavelength of the important perturbation was assumed to be much larger than the lamellar spacing, h, and the perturbation was assumed not to change the lamellar spacing, A. Both the mass and thermal diffusion equation were used with averaged quantities at the boundary to determine whether the perturbation grows or shrinks in time. A stability criterion was determined by considering the case in which the perturbation remains stationary. An example of Pb-Sn alloys was used to illustrate the validity of this theory. I) THEORY A) Temperature at the Interface. The temperature of the interface in coupled two-phase growth is close to the eutectic temperature TE even for alloys off eutectic composition. It is assumed that the interface is in local equilibrium and one expects the temperature at the intersection of the liquid phase and the solid phases a and 0 to be near the eutectic temperature. The interface is undercooled because of curvature and the deviation of the composition in the liquid from the eutectic composition. The average interface temperature Ti for steady-state growth of a lamellar eutectic with a plane interface was determined by Jackson and Hunt' as given in their Eq. [17c]. Instead of using the ratio of the lamellar widths hp/h, as a parameter, the volume fraction of the 0 phase, +, will be used as it simplifies the algebra. The average interface temperature using this notation becomes: The average temperature of the interface depends on the volume fraction of the 0 phase, +, which may be related to the composition of the solid or the bulk composition of the liquid Co by: where C, and Cp are the average compositions of the solid phases. In steady-state growth, the composition of the solid is equal to the composition in the liquid far from the interface. The variation of the average interface temperature with composition is illustrated in Fig. 1 for the case of Pb-Sn alloys with a 10"4 cm lamellar spacing as calculated from Eqs. [I] and [2]. The interface temperature goes through a maximum at a composition near but not exactly at the eutectic composition. Zinc-vapor pressures in equilibrium with bcc solutions of zinc and iron at 703.5", 757", 793", and 900°C were measured by an isopiestic method. Thermody-na?nic properties of zinc in these solutions were derived directly and those of iron with a Gibbs-Duhem integration. Zirzc and iron exhibit large, positive, and moderately temperature-sensitive deviations from ideality. Excess enthalpies and Gibbs energies are positive in the ranges studied. It has been establzshed in relating published phase equilibria to the Gibbs energies of forming solid solutions that positive departures from ideality also exist in the fcc solutions. Tlze stability, as defined by Darken, of the bcc solutions is small but positive at 703.5"C. Its decrease with decreasing temperature indicates that a miscibility gap may exist in the stable or metastable bcc solutions at lower temperatures. The changes of thertnodynanlic properties relatable to changes in magnetic state are minor compared to other changes due to alloying. The accuracy with which the relation between lattice parameter and composition of the bcc solutions is known has been improved. Zinc increases the lattice parameter of a iron by O.ZOZA per unit atom action zinc to at least NZn = 0.25. TO our knowledge, only Ciganl has previously investigated thermodynamic properties of the bcc solutions of the Fe-Zn system. He measured zinc-vapor pressures in the temperature range from about 320" to 360°C by an effusion technique. We have measured the vapor pressures of zinc in equilibrium with bcc solutions of zinc and iron at 703.5", 757", 793", and 900°C by an isopiestic technique. This investigation and the pursuant thermodynamic computations are part of a program for studying several properties of these solid solutions. In the appendix we report a remeasurement of the relation at room temperature between the lattice parameter and zinc content. Related work not reported herein embraces measuring the diffusivity2 of zinc in ferrite at 700" to 900°C and the Curie point temperature3 as functions of composition. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD AND APPARATUS Purified iron at a series of constant temperatures was saturated with zinc at a series of constant zinc-vapor pressures, the range of conditions being so limited that the equilibrated solid solutions were ferri-tic. The equilibration was conducted in long capsules, Fig. 1, that had been evacuated, gettered with titanium, and sealed. The purified iron, part of a vacuum-melted ingot of electrolytic-iron stock (Glidden Co. 1044-grade), had the impurity contents listed in Table I. It was used in the form of millings about 0.001 in. thick. A zinc of 99.999 pct purity (United Mineral and Chemical Corp.) and later one of 99.9999 pct purity (Cominco Products, Inc.) were used, with no observed difference in results. Sufficient zinc was placed in the capsule (separate from the iron and kept at a different temperature) to supply the vapor phase and the iron alloy, while leaving a pool of pure liquid zinc throughout the run. The imposed temperature of the residual zinc pool fixed the vapor pressure of zinc throughout the capsule; condensation was avoided at other locations by making this the lowest temperature in the capsule. Two common complications of nonisothermal systems were, we believe, effectively absent from ours: first, molecular species other than monatomic have no appreciable concentration in zinc vapor at 700" to 900~~: second, the development of zinc-pressure differentials in the capsules was suppressed by use of relatively large-diameter tubing and the absence of diluents in the zinc vapor other than desorbed impurities. The specimens and zinc pool were located at two isothermal zones (each ranging within 1°C over several inches) of a wire-wound, 37-in.-long vertical-tube furnace. The required temperature distribution was achieved by external adjustment of the currents in three electrically isolated windings. Titanium of commercial purity (RC-70) and two all-a (hcp) alloys (4Al-1/4O2 and 5Al-2.5Sn) were tested in sheet form under conditions of combined-stress loading. Plane-strain compression and plane -strain tension together with uniaxial compression and tension provided information for constructing the tension-tension and compression-compression quadvants of the plane-stress yield locus. Coordinate values were obtained from yield-strength measurements; the slope at each point was based on a plastic-strain ratio. The materials represented a wide range of plastic anisotropy, which was reflected in correspondingly varied departures of the yield locus from that for iso-tropy. The tension-tension and compression-compression quadrants were not identical. If the uniaxial yield strength is insensitive to direction and the sign of the applied stress, the Mises or perhaps the Tresca criterion is adequate for predicting the onset of yielding under combined-stress loading. The prediction is not so straightforward in plastically anisotropic material. Depending upon details of texture, combined-stress yielding resistance may be substantially different from that indicated by the usual criteria.' However. a continuum theory of yielding under such conditions is available for reasonably direct application.2,3 Whether or not it can be used successfully must, of course, depend upon how closely the conditions of the theory are satisfied in the material in question. In its present form the theory contains no provision for Bauschinger-type effects, nor does it allow for the consequences that might grow out of deformation by more than one mechanism, e.g., by slip and twinning.4 With those limitations, more importance must be attached to experimental information about the yield surface for anisotropic materials. Studies of the yield surface have generally been confined to states of plane stress (tension-tension and tension-compression) established in thin-wall tubes by externally applied forces and internal pressure. That approach would be entirely suitable for anisotropic materials if they were available in tube form or in sufficient bulk to be machined into test specimens. 6-9 It would not serve for the textured and anisotropic sheets of much current engineering interest, unless sheet could be formed into high-pressure tubing without structural change. Since there would seem to be little chance of the latter, practical alternatives are needed. One such alternative is the subject of this paper. It involves the use of a few selected but relatively simple uniaxial loading tests on sheet specimens. The underlying idea is presented here with some details relating to application and a few results bearing on how well it has worked. THE BASIS OF TESTING Conventional Measurements. Yielding for a general case of anisotropy is described by the plane-stress locus in Fig. 1. Reference directions in the sheet specimen are related to the stress coordinates as shown with the insert: x is the rolling direction, y the transverse direction, and z the through-thickness direction. The four reference-direction yield strengths (t, tension; c, compression), Xt, Xc, Yt, and Yc, are all different. Nine paths that can be followed in uniaxial loading experiments are identified. Paths 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent conventional tension and compression testing to establish Xt, Yt,.Xc, and Yc. Useful information also comes from the ratio of the transverse plastic-strain components associated with yielding and flow in conventional tension or compression. A condition to be satisfied in locus construction is that the plastic-strain vector be everywhere normal to the locus.10 The projection of the vector which would

BRADLEY STOUGHTON, New York, N. Y.:-I would like to ask Mr. Krejci whether they have tried mixing coke dust with the lime in those converters and, if so, if any advantage has been found. It has been a very great advantage in the steel converters where coke dust has been mixed with the lime near the tuyeres. Of course the agent that causes the corrosion at that point is oxide of iron, and coke seems to prevent the formation of the oxide of iron and so protect the tuyeres. It would be interesting to know if it had the same effect in the copper converters. MILO W. KREJCI:-We have never tried it here. At Anaconda the tuyere section was formerly put in by mixing magnesite with tar and ramming that into the tuyere section, but they have abandoned that. Might I ask how you would apply the coke dust? How get it into the tuyere section ? How hold it there ? BRADLEY STOUGHTON :-The coke dust is mixed with silica and clay and then rammed in and burned. I suppose in your converters it would be mixed with the magnetite or magnesite and then agglomerated with the material in place. MILO W. KREJCI:-We never tried it here. PROF. JOSEPH W. The influence of plastic deformation in compression on the self-diffisivity of a iron has been measured in the temperature range of 742º to 885°C. The diffusivity is enhanced in proportion to the strain rate, but this dependence decreases with increasing temperature. The magnitude of the strain is relatively unimportant in this connection. Strain rates from 0 to -2 x 10-3 sec-1 were investigated, with a corresponding increase in diffusivity up to 3 x 103 times. The results are analyzed in terms of vacancy diffusion and the excess vacancies introduced during dejornzntion. It is concluded that grain boundaries are the main vacancy sinks in polycrystalline iron and that the vacancy lifetime is therefore dependent on the grain size. A typical vacancy lifetime at 800°C with a nzean grain-boundary intercept of 0.3 cm is of the order of 1 sec. LATTICE imperfections are considered to be the dominant mechanism of diffusion in close-packed crystals. Vacant lattice sites are usually the most important defect, but the enhancement of diffusion along grain boundaries and other short-circuiting paths has been well documented. Inasmuch as plastic straining produces a variety of defects, it would be expected that the application of stresses sufficient to cause plastic flow during a diffusion run might result in an increase in the self-diffusivity. Enhanced self-diffusion in a iron under compressive creep has been observed by Buffington and Cohen' and subsequent coworkers.2 Lee and Maddin3,4 have also found an enhancement in the self-diffusivity of silver single crystals undergoing torsional deformation. On the other hand, Darby, Tomizuka, and Balluffi5 have not observed any significant diffusion increase in single crystals of silver deformed either in tension or in compression, although the results in this case may have been affected by the occurrence of recrystallization. With poly crystalline silver, however, Forestieri and Girifalco6 have found en- hanced diffusion during compressive creep. A small decrease in the self-diffusivity of zinc single crystals under compressive loading has been reported,7 but the applied stresses in these experiments were too low to cause appreciable plastic deformation. For the cases in which enhanced diffusion has been found, a number of common effects have been noted. Usually, the ratio of the diffusivity during straining, Ds, to the diffusivity in the unstrained condition, D,, varies linearly with the strain rate, and does not seem to be a function of the plastic strain, at least up to ? = 0.2. Values of Ds/Du of the order of 100 have been reported'-4 but the enhancement decreases with increasing diffusion temperature. The activation energy for diffusion decreases markedly with increasing strain rate and approaches a level of roughly one-half the unstrained value. Most of the current explanations of these observations assume that excess vacancies are generated by the deformation, but rather large concentrations of excess vacancies and/or long lifetimes are required by these theories.',',',' Since the original work on iron, there has been an important improvement in the compressive-loading technique.2 The early data were also analyzed without taking into account the motion of the coordinate system in the specimens undergoing plastic deformation. This problem has now been solved by a number of investigators (see Refs. 11, 12, and the appendix of the present paper). Consequently, the strain-diffusion runs on iron for the Ds measurements were repeated and extended over wider ranges of temperature and strain rate. In addition, the original diffusivity data9 on the unstrained iron have been corrected for the divergence of the beam in the counting system and new data points have been added, resulting in somewhat different values for the self-diffusi-vities in a iron.10 The new values for Du are used in this paper. A comparison of Ds and Du confirms the large enhancement in the self-diffusivity of iron during compressive creep, as previously reported.',2

AMONG the industrial enterprises which have, from time to time, been undertaken in our Dominion, few have been more uniformly unsuccessful than those which have had for their object the develop ment of our mineral resources. These resources hare not been re garded as insignificant. On the contrary, it is supposed that we possess in our ore deposits something more than mere points of mineralogical interest. Some people are enthusiastic enough to be lieve that our mineral wealth will yet occasion the establishment in our backwoods of happy and industrious communities, causing, in fact, our wilderness to blossom as the rose. These enthusiasts do not shut their eyes to the serious obstacles which at every stage in terfere with the carrying out of mining enterprises in this country, and which tempt one to believe that no such enterprise can ever be conducted to a desirable end, but they entertain the conviction that as our capitalists, miners, and technologists reach the years of discretion, and handle our mines in an economical, vigorous, and judicious manner, and as our statesmen become alive to the necessity of fostering, without extremely protecting, our metallurgical indus tries, mines and furnaces will gradually prosper, and so develop as to become a tower of strength to our agricultural, manufacturing, and mercantile interests. The fact that our past experience does not generally justify such glowing anticipations makes one all the more anxious to put on record the history of a successful mine, such as the Silver Islet has, on the whole, been. My connection with its discovery and early development was a very intimate one, and I propose in this paper to sketch its history and character, and sum up the amount of silver it has so far yielded. An additional reason for the appearance of this paper is that the Transactions of the Institute contain only a few references to the Silver Islet Mine. Although this mine is reported successful, we have, of course, no guarantee that it will not fall a victim to the same influences which have

The solidifzcation reactions in the Cu-Sn-As system were determined by microscopic examination, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The system presents no ternary compound. There is a quasi-binary section, of a simple eutectic type, between the compounds Cu5As2 and SnAs; the system presents, in addition, one ternary eutectic reaction, one ternary peritectic reaction, and seven transitional reactions. The temp-peratures corresponding to each of these reactions were determined, most of them with an accuracy of *lLC. The isothermal lines of the liquidus surface were also established for almost the entire diagram. NO reference was found in the literature relative to the Cu-Sn-As phase diagram and this is believed to be the first study on this subject. The Cu-Sn diagram was taken from Hansen and Anderko;' it is represented by Fig. 1, with the phase designation which will be used in the remainder of this work. For the Cu-As diagram, the solution proposed by Hansen and ~nderko' must be modified to take account of recent data, principally from Heyding and Despault~ and from Hume-Rothery and Burns; this yields the diagram represented by Fig. 2. As for the Sn-As diagram, it is not established with certainty, particularly so far as concerns the solid solubility of tin in arsenic and the solidification reactions near the compound SnsAsz. For this last point, Hansen and Anderko propose two solutions: congruent melting of Sn3Asz with a eutectic SnsAsZ + SnAs or incongruent melting implying a peri-tectic reaction L + SnAs = Sn3As2. Microscopic examination of the few binary alloys prepared in this composition range made us prefer the second of these solutions, which gives the diagram shown by Fig. 3. THE experiments described in this paper were made at the Washoe Reduction Works, Anaconda, Mont., for the purpose of determining the relative speed of elimination of the iron, sulphur and arsenic during the process of bessemerizing copper-mattes. The samples were taken from a horizontal "barrel" converter, 8 ft. in diameter and 12 ft. 6 in. long, having an average charge of 9 tons of matte, and blown with a 16-1b. air-pressure. All samples were taken with the blast on, turning the converter from its normal blowing-position to nearly verti¬cal, so that a conical mold, with a long handle attached to a horizontal rod, could be introduced from a platform above the converter into the mouth of the converter and a sample taken. The difficulties of taking a sample with the blast on are appar¬ent, and the irregularities of the lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 can be readily accounted for by the amount of slag in the samples. On the whole, the plotting of the results gives comparatively uniform lines, considering the conditions. The samples were taken by the regular sampling-force of the works at 10-min. intervals, as shown in Tables I., II and III, which also give the chemical analysis of the samples so taken. The test shown in Table I. was made with a new converter; that of Table II with a converter that had made three charges and had been cleaned out; that of Table III with a converter that bad blown one charge to white metal, and had then been " washed " out and used for the test. In plotting these results, it was necessary to take, as a basis, the percentage of copper in the samples. This basis does not exactly represent the true condition, since the volume is constantly decreasing and a certain quantity of copper passes into the slag, but it is as near as can be obtained in practice. The Mining Section of The National Safety Council recently sent out a questionnaire to operators, regarding the class of rope used, specifications required or obtained, factors of safety observed, methods of fastening ropes, lubrication, inspection, and points observed when rope is to be discarded. The answers received from this questionnaire, largely from metal mines, give interesting information, from which recommendations for safety practice on hoisting ropes are drawn. Depth of Mine The depth in the majority of cases noted is from 1000 ft. to 1500 ft. (304 to 457 m.) and records come from a number hoisting from depths of 2000 to 3000 ft. Hoisting is generally done in balance, with a few companies using counterweights. Seldom, more than two shifts are occupied in hoisting. A number of large operators limit the shift for engineers to 6 hr. A few of the larger operators have separate hoists for men and supplies, with a higher class rope for men. The range of loads varies from 7 to 17 tons and greater in a few cases, with a balanced weight of 4 to 7 tons. Size or Drums and Sheaves The size of drums and size of sheaves are generally in accordance with recommendations of rope manufacturers. Only one-half of the operators use grooved drums; one, The Sulphide Corpn., New South Wales, uses wood-lagged drums. Very few operators have drums capable of holding all the rope in a single wrap. Cone drums or cone and cylinder drums, in the mines heard from, are very rare. A few mines of shallow depth use a small drum and large-sized sheave. While this may be allowed, and in some cases is all right, the size of drum and sheave should be fully equal to that recommended by the rope manufacturers and should be at least 60 to 100 times the diameter of the

In previous publications,5 results of single-blow bit tooth impacts on saturated rocks at various stress states were reported. This paper extends these earlier works to include study of bit impact tests on salt water-saturated Berea and Bandera sandstone samples under conditions of elevated confining and pore pressure. During the tests dynamic filtration and deposition of a mud cake were occurring due to the presence of drilling mud in the borehole and a borebole-to-formation pressure differential. Results indicate that saturation of these sandstones with salt water tends to make them weaker than when saturated with nonreactive fluids. Plastic failure often occurs even when extremely high fluid-loss muds are present in the borehole. The failure mode tends toward plasticity with decreasing fluid loss. Brittle failure of sandstones in mud-filled holes is apparently relatively rare. Depending on the stress level, and the associated failure mode, withdrawal of the bit tooth induces a tensile force that seems rather important relative to the quantity of rock removed by vertical tooth impact. INTRODUCTION A vast majority of the oil wells drilled today involve the use of colloidal muds having a measurable mud filtrate loss. It is known from field experience that reduction of the water loss of a mud generally results in a reduction of the penetration rate. This paper describes an investigation of crater formation at simulated bottom-hole pressure conditions for drilling fluids having different water losses. The literature on single bit tooth impact (cratering) at atmospheric conditions is extensive, but only a limited amount of work has been performed at the stress conditions similar to that found in oil wells. Spherical penetrator cratering tests on rocks at hydrostatic pressure were performed by Payne and Chippenda1e.1 Chisel impact studies on limestone with independently varying overburden and borehole pressure and atmospheric pore pressure were reported by Garner, et al.2 Gnirk and Cheatham3 performed "static" penetrator tests on dry rocks at equal overburden and borehole pressures. Podio and Gray4 studied the effect of pore fluid viscosity at atmospheric pore and borehole pressures and varying overburden pressures. Their results illustrated the importance of fluid saturation of the rock. Yang and Gray5 reported single tooth impact tests on saturated rocks at elevated borehole, pore and confining pressures, but with equal pore and borehole pressures. For the work reported in Refs. 4 and 5, filtration across the hole bottom purposely was avoided. Maurer6 has investigated the effect of independently varying pore and borehole pressures at elevated overburden pressures by using a zero water-loss mud in the borehole. His tests were carried out under conditions that allowed independent control of overburden, pore and borehole pressures, but without control of filtration at the hole bottom. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE APPARATUS The single blow chisel impact apparatus used by Garner,2 as modified for this study, is shown in Fig. 1. A cross section of the pressure vessel is shown in Fig. 2. Several pieces of auxiliary equipment were added to the original apparatus in order that the borehole and pore pressure could be applied in a manner analogous to the actual bottom-hole situation. The pore-pressure system included a filtrate volume-measuring transducer and had sufficient surge capacity to allow filtrate to be injected into the sample without significant changes in pore pressure at points remote to the borehole. The borehole-pressure system contained a cross connection to the pore-pressure system so that both systems could be pressured simultaneously. The borehole-pore pressure differential was applied rapidly by the use of a quick and full-opening valve. The operation of this valve triggered two industrial
