The separation of fine sizes of coal from its impurities by means of various flotation methods has become of increasing importance in the coal industry. This, no doubt, will be even more so in the future as the quantity of high grade coal is depleted, particularly that used for metallurgical purposes. The purpose of this paper is to describe and report the results of research work done under the auspices of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. to determine the amenability of their bituminous fine sizes of coal to flotation, to investigate the value of various reagents and factors affecting their use, and compare the results between froth flotation and bulk oil flotation. Compared with the preferential flotation of complex minerals, or ores, the flotation of coal is comparatively easy. However, this statement should not lull one into the feeling that there are no special problems involved. For instance, the separation of coal from pyrite in high sulphur coals is still far from being 100 pet successful. Size consist has considerable effect on reagent consumption and recovery. Other factors will be described and finally it must be remembered that in the flotation of coal a low priced material is being treated and thus economic considerations govern more closely its application than is generally the case in treating other minerals. As a result of the research work done by the Pittsburgh Coal Co. on the flotation of coal, it was concluded that it was practical to clean the —48-mesh coal commercially by froth flotation and after several different types of flotation units and circuits were investigated by means of pilot plants, large scale units were installed at their Champion Nos. 1, 4 and 5 Preparation Plants for the cleaning of —48-mesh slurries. These large scale operations have been recently described by D. H. Davis.' C. P. Proctor and C. B. Carlson2 in their chapter on Froth Flotation of Coal in the AIME Seeley W. Mudd series book on Coal Preparation describe some of the practical applications of our Pittsburgh Coal Co. laboratory work in actual plant practice as well as summarizing part of the investiga-tional work. The author presents this paper, however, as a supplement to their reports, and records the basic research accomplished in the laboratory investiga-tional work as well as the results of experiments using bulk oil flotation. In presenting this work the author wishes to state much more work must be done in applying the principles of flotation to cleaning coal, especially in view of recent studies and practices in other mineral beneficiation fields. Methods of Conducting Laboratory Tests The bulk of the research work was conducted in the laboratory of the Champion No. I Preparation Plant. From time to time papers treating of specific cases of Southern gold-mines and mining have appeared in the Transactions of this Institute, as well as in other journals and publications. Mr. George I?. Becker, of the United States Geological Survey, made a reconnaissance of the Southern Appalachian gold-belt during the fall of 1894; the results of his investigations are published under the title of "A Reconnoissance of the GoldFields of the Southern Appalachians," in the Sixteenth Annual Report of the Director of the United States Geological Survey, 1894-95 : Part III., " Mineral Resources of the United States." Mr. Becker has treated the subject mainly in a scientific geological manner. We present this paper to the members of the Institute as requested by the Secretary last May, with the object of covering the ground from a more practical and technical standpoint. The notes for this paper were made in a large measure from personal observations, gained chiefly during the past summer on a trip through the field. In connection with this trip we collected a suite of typical hand-specimens, representing the gold-ores and wall-rock from the more important localities. This collection forms a part of the exhibit

IT is a privilege and a pleasure to deliver this, the Twenty-sixth Annual Institute of Metals Division Lecture. Eleven years ago C. A. Edwards addressed this audience on the subject "Gases in Metals." In spite of this relatively recent presentation, I propose to, present to you some quantitative considerations of industrial significance on the separation of gases from molten metals because recent observations and measurements, presented in the literature, have made it possible to evaluate mathematically the gases or gas-forming elements and to develop an understanding of the mechanism of gas separation that should permit, in many cases, the control of this baffling phenomenon. DEFINITIONS Before becoming involved in the subject it seems desirable, for the sake of clarity, to state certain definitions and axioms: I. We are dealing only with gases that separate from the molten metal either during cooling or in the transition from liquid to solid. Gases injected by the liquid stream and trapped in the solidified metal, or those forced into the solidifying metal from the mold due to either thermal or cher4ical effects are not considered. Neither are we concerned with the separation of gases within the metal after solidification is complete for the data on this subject are at least complete enough to permit the practicing metallurgist to satisfactorily control the phenomenon. 2. Only where there is a decrease in solubility or a change in equilibrium of either a gaseous element or an element that reacts to form a gaseous compound, can there be a separation of a gaseous phase from the liquid or solidifying metal. 3. The amount of gas separating from the liquid during solidification can be computed directly from the amount of the element contained in the liquid when freezing commences less the amount of the element found in the solid either as a separate solid phase or in solid solution. 4. There can be no separation of gas bubbles unless the told pressure of the gases in the liquid meld exceeds atmospheric pressure plus the hydrostatic pressure of ' the liquid metal head. (In addition, pres- sure resulting from surface tension in- creases the total pressure requirement for initial gas separation. Probably the remarkable differences in appearance caused by different gases in the same host metal are influenced greatly by the rate of diffusion of the gas in the liquid metal balancing the decrease in pressure as the gas bubble size increases and the surface tension effect decreases. Thus hydrogen with its high diffusion rate in liquid copper separates in the form of relatively coarse cavities for a given rate of heat extraction.) 5. Gas separation can take place at less than atmospheric pressure in the voids created by the shrinkage from liquid to solid, but since the voids are not caused by the gas the presence of gas in the voids is of importance only where it

The preparation of low-grade iron-ores by concentration, whether or not followed by an agglomeration of the concentrate, has in the United States only recently been recognized as a metallurgical process of vast economical importance for its iron indust.ry. This importance of the process lies not only in the fact that it makes possible the use of ores heretofore discarded on account of their low iron-content or their too high percentage of elements deleterious in the iron industry, but also in its produetion of a raw material for the blast-furnace that is more uniform in its physical character and chemically purer, with a higher iron-content, than the general run of natural ores. When mixed in the burden of the furnace, it lowers the amount of coke and fluxing-stone required per ton of pig-iron produced. The furnace-operations become more regular and more easily controlled. The pig-iron is of higher quality and more uniform in character. In brief, it is becoming recognized that the beneficiating of the natural iron-ore, even if it makes the furnace-ore higher in cost per unit of iron entering into the burden, may mean a lowering of the production-cost of the pig-iron and an improved product. At the present time, the Lake Superior district furnishes about 80 per cent. of all the iron-ore yearly produced in the United States. If the Southern States arc exempted the percentage runs as high as 93 per cent. These ores are showing a steady decrease in grade from year to year. For the past 10 or 15 years this falling off in the average grade has been about 0.5 per cent. a year. The lowered grade of ore means an in-

Oriented overgrowths and intergrowths among both metallic and nonmetallic substances have been recognized and studied for well over a century. The work of Widmanstätten in 1808 on the geometrical structure in meteorites, a structure known by his name, demonstrated that oriented intergrowths can occur in purely metallic systems. This fact led to much of the early microscopic study of alloys, contributing greatly to the advance of physical metallurgy. The problem has been attacked again in recent years in a comprehensive fashion, with the object of discovering what atomic movements may occur during phase changes in alloy systems. Much of this work has appeared in the A.I.M.E. Transactions in a series of papers published by Mehl and coworkers beginning in 19311. Although many aspects of this general problem remain unsolved, it may be said that the orientation of a new phase forming by precipitation from solid solution or by transformation invariably bears a unique relationship to the orientation of the phase from which it formed, and that similarity in atomic patterns on atomic planes in the two phases play an important part in determining the orientation relationship. Analogous orientation relationships exist in oriented intergrowths in nonmetallic systems—mineral or inorganic. In 1827 Haidinger2 discovered natural intergrowths of hematite and magnetite, and demonstrated that the rough form of the magnetite octahedrons was delineated by small crystals of hematite, of which the basal (00.1) planes lay parallel to the octahedral cleavage planes of the magnetite. Drilling for oil in the eastern producing states was fairly active during the first part of 1931, although less so than in 1930. With low prices development declined during the year, until the low prices of the summer resulted in an almost complete shut-down of drilling. This coincided with the action of the Conservation Board of the Pennsylvania Crude Oil Producers Assn, in limiting pipe line runs to 50 per cent of the 1930 normal for the Bradford district and upper country, and to 70 per cent for the balance of the region. Not only was new drilling halted but in many cases oil-producing properties were shut in. In November crude prices were partly restored, and all oil offered was being taken except in the Bradford district which was restricted to 80 per cent of the 1930 normal. During the latter part of the year drilling was being resumed on a moderate scale, and new production indicated a resumption of the proration order. The interest in gas development which has been under way for several years, maintained its supremacy over the search for oil in 1931. New reserves of importance were developed during the year in the Western Kentucky Coal Basin, in the Eastern Kentucky shale gas territory, in Stark County, Ohio, as well as the Oriskany sand development in northern Pennsylvania and central New York. A gas line was completed to the Eastern Seaboard serving Washington and Baltimore, and other lines were under construction designed to serve portions of the territory not hitherto supplied with natural gas. The low price of fuel oil at seaboard is understood to be the deterrent factor against further extension of natural gas lines to these markets at present. The development of these new reserves, as well as those developed by intensive drilling in old areas, resulted in the building up of large potential gas production and a lowering of rates paid to the producer. This, coupled with the country-wide tendency to lower the consumer rates of all public utilities, resulted in a general threat to reopen rate cases before various state commissions. The isothermal formation of martensite in a 71 pct Fe, 29 pct Ni alloy is found to take place mainly by the nucleation of new plates rather than by the growth of existing ones, and is dependent on the temperature and time of the isothermal hold, the amount of atherrnal martensite present, the state of internal strain, and the application of tensile stress. The conclusion is reached that the isothermal nucleation is activated by thermal fluctuations superimposed on localized regions of very high strain. The reaction-path concept, involving martensite nucleation at strain embryos by athermal activation on cooling, or by thermal fluctuations on holding, reconciles the athermal and isothermal modes of transformation, and offers a unified picture of the kinetics of martensite formation. THE phenomenon of isothermal martensite formation has been the subject of considerable study lately,'-' and its reality has been thoroughly established. The existence of such isothermal transformation has been claimed to confirm the nucleation and growth hypothesis as applied to the martensitic reaction.1 " However, the isothermal formation of a martensitic phase is also compatible with the reaction-pathw escription of the transformation. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the isothermal mode of the martensitic reaction, both theoretically and experimentally, in order to test the likelihood of the above two mechanisms. Material and Methods The alloy used in this study contained about 71 pct Fe and 29 pct Ni. The complete analysis was 29.5 ± 0.2 pct Ni, 0.036 pct C, 0.02 pct N, 0.19 pct Mn, 0.09 pct Si, 0.008 pct P, and 0.006 pct S. The amount of isothermal transformation was determined by electrical resistance measurements using a Kelvin double bridge. The specimens were in the form of rods 1/16 in. diam x 4 in. long. Aus-tenitizing was performed at 1095°C for % hr either in a pre-purified nitrogen atmosphere or in an evacuated Vycor tube, followed by oil quenching to room temperature. After this treatment, the samples were completely austenitic, and the transformation studies were conducted at subatmospheric tempera- tures. Lineal analysis and X-ray determinations of retained austenite were used to calibrate the electrical resistance changes in terms of the percentage of martensite. The martensite range curve for this alloy is given in Fig. 9 of ref. 6. The M, temperature occurs at about -18°C (255°K). Reaction-Path Theory The nucleation and growth description of the martensitic transformation that occurs isothermally has already been given by Kurdjumow.','2 However, no comparable treatment exists using the reaction-path concept." Consequently this section presents the reaction-path description of the isothermal mode of the martensitic transformation. According to the latter theory, there is a reaction path (a strain) which describes the relative motion of the atoms during their transference from the austenitic to the martensitic state. The possibility exists, therefore, that the nucleation of a martensitic plate is accomplished by an embryo that comprises a state intermediate between that of austenite and martensite. This state may be attained within a finite volume by means of a homogeneous strain of the austenitic matrix. There is a free-energy barrier (F.) along the reaction path, corresponding to a critical strain in a critical volume. When activation is achieved, a spontaneous increase in strain and volume of the embryo takes place to generate the full-size martensitic plate. This mode of nucleation is to be distinguished from the more conventional mode involving embryos of the martensitic phase that merely grow in size by an interface motion. There are two ways whereby embryos in the austenitic phase can achieve the critical state of strain for isothermal nucleation: 1—through the formation of internal strains by plastic deformation or by stress; and 2—through thermal fluctuations, preferably superimposed upon existing internal strains. The activation free energy F,, must be supplied either mechanically by internal strains or thermally by energy fluctuations, or by a combination of both.

In the fields of Comodoro Rivadavia (Chubut Territory) and Mendoza and Salta Provinces, the production obtained was as shown in Table I. The only place where there was a small increase was Plaza Huincul, in the Neuquen Territory and Lunlunta, in the Mendoza Province.

The phenomenon of the change of volume of pressed powder compacts upon sintering is well known in the field of powder metallurgy. Depending upon the metal or metals involved and the pressure used in forming, a compact may, in the course of time of sintering at a given temperature, expand mono-tonically, contract monotonically, or first show a volume change of one sign followed by a change of the opposite sign. It is clearly desirable to have accurate knowledge of the magnitude and sign of the change in dimensions to be expected in any given case, both from the point of view of direct usefulness in the fabrication of parts by powder metallurgy, and from the longer range viewpoint of elucidating the fundamental mechanism of metallic sintering. The present study was therefore undertaken as a first step in acquiring systematic and reasonably quantitative knowledge of the change in density of metal powder compacts during sintering. For practical reasons, copper was selected as the material to be studied first, and its densification followed as a function of temperature and time of sintering in hydrogen and in vacuum. Experimental Procedure The copper powder used was that designated by the manufacturer (Metals Disintegrating Co., Elizabeth, N. J.) as MD-151. This powder was sifted through Tyler standard screens to separate the fraction having particle size range between 200 mesh and 325 mesh, and this fraction was used in all the subsequent work. Compacts weighing about 10 g were then pressed in a 1 in. diam round die, using a pressure of 20,000 psi throughout. Sintering was carried out in commercially built electric furnaces in which the resistance windings are so disposed as to produce a nearly uniform temperature along the axis of the furnace for a length of about 18 in. centrally located. In order to be able to sinter in a controlled atmosphere, a 2 in. stainless steel tubing was inserted in the furnace. Each end of the tube was cooled by a water jacket about 7 in. long, and closed with a rubber stopper. The hydrogen used for one series of specimens was purified as described in Ref. 1. For the other set, a pressure of about 0.5 mm Hg was maintained during sintering by a Welch Duo-Seal Pump. The specimens were heated on square trays made of stainless steel. In placing specimens in the trays, a thin even layer of powdered aluminum oxide was first sprinkled on the bottom of the tray. A copper guard disk about half the thickness of the specimen was then placed in the tray and covered with a second layer of alumina. The actual specimen was then set on the guard disk, and a final coat of alumina sprinkled over the specimen. This technique was evolved for sintering the specimens in such a way as to reduce the influence of unknown extraneous factors to a minimum. If the specimen is placed directly on the tray and sintered, it is found that the resulting shape is that of a frustum of a cone, rather than a section of a right circular cylinder, since friction with the tray prevents the bottom of the specimen from contracting at the same rate as the top. In the arrangement used in these experiments, the guard disk provided a support which shrank at the same rate as the specimen, and the alumina powder reduced to a minimum friction between guard disk and tray, and between specimen and guard disk. The procedure followed in sintering consisted of bringing the furnace to the required temperature, and then inserting the specimen into the central heated portion of the furnace tube in one of the two atmospheres used. At the end of the heating period, the specimen was cooled by bringing it into a portion of the furnace surrounded by a water jacket. These manipulations were carried out without opening the furnace, by means of rods which were attached to the trays and operated through a sliding seal in the rubber stopper. The progress of densification of the copper compacts was studied at 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700, and 1800°F. At each of these temperatures, a specimen was allowed to sinter for each of the following time intervals: M, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 hr. The thickness and diameter of each specimen were measured with micrometers before and after sintering, and each was weighed on an analytical balance after sintering. Results The techniques described in the preceding section were found to give satisfactory results. The specimens were not detectibly warped after sintering, and were usually of uniform diameter (that is, truly round) to within 0.001 in., a very few showing a variation in diameter of ±0.002 in. The Smackover oil and gas field lies in Ouachita and Union Counties, Ark., in the south-central part of the state, in T.15 and 16S., R.15, 16, and 17W. It is 10 miles north of El Dorado, the principal business and railroad center in the south-central part of the state, and extends from the town of Smackover in all directions. Productive territory having an aggregate area of nearly 55 sq. mi. has been developed. It extends 6 miles from north to south and 12 miles from east to west. The field may be divided into two parts: the east district, which includes the area east of the town of Smackover, and the west district, which includes the area west of the town of Smackover. In relation to the neighboring productive fields of Arkansas, the Smackover field is 9 miles north of the El Dorado oil and gas field, 8 miles slightly west of north of the East El Dorado oil and gas field, and 16 miles east of the Stephens oil field. Smackover was discovered in May, 1922, when the Oil Operators Tnist drilled well No. 1 on the J. T. Murphy farm, in the southeast quarter of sec. 8, T.16S., R.15W. This well is located almost on the top of the Norphlet dome and was drilled to the Nacatoch sand. It had an initial open flow volume of 30,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas per day, and a rock pressure of 950 lb. per sq. in. In July, 1922, the V. K. F. Co. completed the first oil well in sec. 29, T.l5S., R.l5W., on the north side of the Norphlet dome, and 3 miles north of the first gas well. This well started the active development of the north and northwest sides of the dome.] The field was extended westwards, when oil was discovered in the Nacatoch sand, during October, 1922, in sec. 4, T.l6S., R.l6W., 51/2 miles west of the original gas well. In this paper the results of an exploratory study conducted by personnel of the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory on 18.6, 22, and 40 wt pct uranium-zirconium alloy will be presented. LARGE power output and long life or endurance from small, compact nuclear reactors require the use of enriched uranium for a fuel material. However, the ability to remove heat from the element, the tolerable fission product concentration, or some physical limitation of the system can limit the allowable fuel enrichment, or the volume of the fuel. In such an event, the fuel-element designer must find a suitable diluent for the uranium. Zirconium is an attractive material for such a purpose as it has good nuclear properties and a low absorption cross section. Because it has a good corrosion resistance in water, zirconium is a suitable cladding and the uranium-zirconium alloy makes a good core material. The alloy has a high thermal conductivity, a low elastic modulus, and a low thermal-expansion coefficient, all of which tend to minimize the thermal stresses in the core. Furthermore, the unirradiated material is reasonably ductile and has adequate strength. DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLES Two types of cylindrical samples were used in this study 1) short, 1/2-to 1-in.-long samples to test the irradiation stability of the alloy and 2) 2-ft-long samples to investigate the resistance of an element to longitudinal deformation. Composite samples having 0.060-to 0.140-in. core diameters and clad with a 0.010-in. thick zirconium jacket were fabricated by coextrusion and by hydrostatic pressure bonding of the cladding to the preformed core material. Both fabrication processes produced the uniform metallurgical core-to-cladding bond which was felt necessary to minimize the uncertainty of the central core temperature. Both consumable-arc and induction-melting techniques were used to melt the uranium-sponge zirconium core alloy. Since a graphite crucible was used in induction-melting this alloy contained more carbon impurity, which resulted in a finer grain size than the arc-melted alloy. The core to cladding interface was uniform in elements coextruded from the fine-grain, induction-melted core material, while those elements fabricated using arc-melted core material had very irregular interfaces because of the coarser grain size. Both cold-worked and heat-treated fuel materials were irradiation tested. Cold-worked alloys were swaged to about a 5 pct final reduction in area without subsequent annealing. The heat-treated alloys were heated to 800°C, held at temperature for 15 min and furnace-cooled to about room temperature. This

Direct factors include such items as shop expense, steel consumed per ton of ore produced, cost of distribution and the dust hazard. The latter, although no specific amount may be assigned to it, is an ever-present problem, and is receiving increased attention as the science of mining progresses. Indirectly drill-steel performance affects consumption of compressed air, maintenance of drills and drilling speed. The latter, in turn, increases or retards the tempo of mining and development. These factors, while not all inclusive, are preponderant in their importance. Thus it is evident that in an extensive operation drill-steel expense may run to many thousands of dollars and that thoughtful research leading toward more efficient practice is warranted. Experimental Work During the late spring of 1939, experiments were undertaken at Homestake in reducing changes in drill-steel gauge from ? in. to 1/16 in. An account of the operation of the Noranda smelter covering the period from December, 1927, when the smelter started, until December, 1929, was given in a paper published by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy early in 1930.' The object of the present paper is to review matters of interest in the original paper and to describe the present construction and operation of the smelter, with particular reference to the reverberatory-furnace practice. The Noranda smelter was built by Noranda Mines, Ltd., from the designs of A. E. Wheeler, consulting metallurgist of New York, for the reduction of ores and concentrates from the Horne mine and to treat, on a custom basis, ores and concentrates from other mines in the Rouyn district. The smelter is at Noranda, about 330 miles directly north of Toronto. Construction work was started in June, 1926, and copper was first produced in December, 1927. The smelter was built throughout as two duplicate units, each with a rated capacity of 500 tons of ore per day. Operations were started with one unit and after several months it was found that one unit alone could smelt 1000 tons of ore a day. At that time there was only one hoisting shaft, No. 3, and its hoisting capacity and the capacity of the original crushing plant were insufficient to supply ore for the two units at the increased tonnage. Accordingly No. 4 shaft was sunk and a new crushing plant provided to handle the ore hoisted there. Operating two units at capacity also required the installation of two more converters to treat the additional quantity of matte produced. This work was completed in the latter part of November, 1929, and since then both smelter units have been operating continuously. In 1928, a mill to treat 500 tons a day of concentrating ore was completed. Since then the concentrator capacity has been increased twice, and at present 2000 tons a day of ore are being concentrated. The layout of the surface plant of the mine, concentrator and smelter is shown in Fig. 1 and the general plan in Fig. 2. The smelter is shown in more detail in Fig. 3. The Waelz process produces oxides of volatilizable metals from ores, metalliferous products and residues. The process was originally used for recovering zinc and lead, where tailings and residues containing those metals had accumulated at mines or smelters, but it is applicable for obtaining tin, arsenic or other volatilizable metals. It is useful when other methods of obtaining the metals from the ores or residues are too difficult or expensive or show too low a recovery. The Waelz process was developed in 1923 for the treatment of large calamine dumps in Upper Silesia, which showed zinc contents of 8 to 10 per cent. and lead contents up to 3 per cent. The rapid development of the process, from the first trials up to the plants now working or in course of erection, is shown in Fig. 1. The first industrial Waelz plant was started in 1925. Slimes are usually defined as all material passing a certain sized sieve, which is invariably the finest sieve employed by each metallurgist in his tests; 100-mesh and 200-mesh have been taken as the limits by different writers in recent volumes of the Transactions; 150-mesh is common practice. The reader of the first two volumes of Richards' is impressed by the inflexibility with which all grinding-arrangements are praised or condemned according as they make little or much slime. Until recently, one of the principal aims of the mill-man was to keep down the slimes. He was obliged to have separate apparatus for sand- and slime-treatment. The latter was sometimes puzzling and erratic. Often it was found most economical to omit treatment of the slimes entirely, or to store them in immense basins or heaps, waiting for possible future improvements in methods of treatment. Recently, improved processes of agitation and filtration have made possible the successful extraction of values from many slimes. The tendency, when the metal is exceedingly finely disseminated, is to cut out all sand-treatment and to slime everything. These processes have been almost entirely mechanical in their conception, and it is the object of the present paper to show that certain chemical considerations may greatly hinder or assist their successful operation. It has long been a source of dissatisfaction to chemists that their analyses fail to be of much help to the clay-worker; that it is a matter of common occurrence for clays of closely identical ultimate chemjcal constitution to show the widest possible divergence in physical properties.

There is no new outstanding fact to be noted concerning the development of petroleum production and research in France and her possessions during 1935. France.—Pechelbronn remains the only important producing field in France. The total output has reached 538,921 bbl., showing a small decrease on last year's figures. Out of this, 302,737 bbl. was extracted by drilling and 236,184 bbl. (44 per cent) was obtained by means of shafts and galleries. Exploration of deeper formations was still in progress, and resulted in the discovery of a new Middle Triassic (Muschel-Kalk) producing horizon. In the vicinity of Hirtzbach (South Alsace) shallow exploration tests (500 ft.) were drilled by the Société de Pechelbronn, oil indications being found in the Tertiary. Two more important wells are now drilling in deeper horizons. The Chantenay well (Niévre) was finished in August, 1935, at a depth of 3544 ft.1 A test is under progress in Savoie. South of Gabian, at Pezenas, the erection of a rig is nearly completed.

In latitude 4" S., about fifty miles from the Pacific, and in the amphitheater on the west flank of the Andes, which is drained by the river Tumbez, is the ancient town and mining district of Zaruma. The town is picturesque in the extreme, perched on a ridge 1800 feet high, between two lovely mountain rivers, looking out upon neighboring hills and valleys clothed in rich green, relieved by many hamlets roofed in red tiles, and, at greater distances on all sides, upon mountain slopes of gloomy forest crowned by the bare summits of the Andes. General Description. The gold-mines, discovered in 1549, mere worked extensively by the Spaniards in the 16th and 17th centuries, until their success was curtailed by the exhaustion of the oxidized surfaceores, and the uncovering of the refractory and hard ores underneath. The industry slowly declined until it was nearly or quite at a standstill in 1878, when an unfortunate English company, organized by Chilian promoters, acquired some of the best properties and began to work them. This company, after an extravagant début, relapsed into a struggle against poverty and mismanagement, and finally collapsed in 1894. In 1896 the English mines and many others, covering most of the district, were acquired by the South American co., formerly the South American Development Co., of New York. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) The vein-formation of Zaruma is extensive and complex, and the ores are somewhat refractory. In the immediate neighborhood of the gold-bearing veins the formation seems to be altogether volcanic, consisting of rather fine-grained holocrystalline diorite; but a few miles away, on either side, some gueisses and crystalline schists are to be found. The following data were collected some years since in the course of a series of experiments with oil as a substitute for coal in puddling, the earlier form of the Archer apparatus being employed. While I am not at liberty to give the name of the works at which the tests were made, I can personally warrant the accuracy of the record, and feel justified, therefore, in making this contribution to a discussion in which all trustworthy figures are likely to be helpful. Oil in Puddling. Starting with everything cold, we used 3518 pounds of oil to get the furnace in condition to charge a heat. After charging, we ran until we took out 13,340 pounds of puddled-blooms, using 8437 pounds, or 1333 gal1ons of oil. At 49 cents per gallon, the cost for oil per gross ton of blooms was $10.91; with coal at $4.871/2, and a consumption of 1.5 tons per ton of blooms (the usual quantity is ton for ton), the cost for coal is $7.31. The quantity of oil consumed in heating the furnace to the proper temperature and to make the bottom, is not included in the oil consumption stated. The quantity used was 3518 pounds of oil. Usually, the furnace need only be lighted, but in this case it had been repaired, and it was necessary to make a new .bottom. This required the quantity of oil necessary to make three heats of blooms, or 2109 pounds. Deducting this from the 3518 pounds leaves 1409 pounds of oil as the quantity consumed every week in lighting up.
