FOREWOHD-Americans have been able to create wealth from the nation's natural resources to an extent unprecedented in recorded history, thanks largely to the existence of a free market and of a rational body of laws. The General Mining Law of 1872, for instance, by establishing the rules of the game, was quite effective in channeling the ability of Americans to discover and develop mineral deposits. Another example was the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 which made available the more easily discovered mineral deposits by spelling out the conditions and rules under which miners could obtain leases on federal lands.

Studies of reservoir behavior of 12 Smackover limestone oil and condensate pools are presented. Buckner, Midway, McKamie, Magnolia, Mt. Holly, Schuler (Reynolds) and Village are treated in considerable detail and subjected to analysis with an electrical device for analyzing reservoir behavior. Results and comparisons of these analyses are presented. In addition to these reservoir-behavior studies, an attempt is made to assemble trans-missibility and storage data on the Smackover limestone formation from cores and logs taken in dry holes and producers. This together with the behavior of individual reservoirs leads to a better understanding of the formation as a porous aquifer. The ultimate purpose of this type of study is to improve predictions concerning the future behavior of these pools in such a system. Predictions are presented for several pools. Introduction In 1937 the Phillips Petroleum Co. drilled its J. D. Reynolds No. I to the Smackover limestone formation at Snow Hill, Arkansas. This well found oil in the porous, permeable, upper part of the Smackover, thereafter referred to as the Reynolds lime. Since then, six oil pools and six condensate pools have been discovered in the Reynolds lime, and more than 75 dry holes have explored parts of this formation. By the first of 1943, 44 million barrels of oil and 83 billion cubic feet of gas had been withdrawn from the various reservoirs. The original reserves estimated by the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission were 342 million barrels of oil and rzoo billion cubic feet of gas. So far all of the production has been from anticlinal structures, most of which are asymmetric and have their axes roughly perpendicular to the dip of the formation top. This is indicated in Fig. I, which shows the pools, dry holes drilled, and contours on top of the Smackover.' These pools are of particular interest for reservoir-behavior studies because the production and drilling has been controlled, and in most cases the records of reservoir data are complete. In addition to the excellent production and pressure information available, more than one half of the wells drilled were cored and all of them were electrically logged. All of the pools show evidence of water drive. While this paper is in a sense a collection of reservoir-behavior studies for several different pools, there has been an attempt to go one step further and to show the importance of the iormation as a porous continuum or a single aquifer in which the withdrawals of fluids from any pool has an important effect on the behavior of all of the pools. An effort will be made to show that the water drives of these pools are dependent upon a much larger area of the Smackover limestone than that occupied by the petroleum accumulations.

With one shaft almost completed and another shaft being sunk, the scope of the Saskatchewan potash area is beginning to come into focus. Some 18 companies have reportedly leased more than four million acres to explore potash possibilities. PCA, farthest along, is located about 15 miles southeast of Saskatoon, and IMC has its project underway near Esterhazy in the eastern edge of the province. U. S. Borax and Chemical Corp. is also reported exploring the area. The field lies in the middle Devonian geological formation which was probed by oil companies along the 200-mile area across the province. Extensive examination began after World War II and deep drilling was started a few years later.

Field observations were made of rock phenomena in shale, dolomite, and fractured quartzite in the Burgin Mine, Eureka, Utah. Draft closure rates were measured with extensometers and convergence gages. In addition the effects of hydraulic props upon the retardation of closure was also monitored. Drift closure rates were found to be constant and to vary between 0.32 x 10-8 min-1 for dolomite and 23.8 x 10-8 min-1 for soft shale. The installation of props set at constant load served to retard the closure rates. General results show closure to occur at a constant rate for all cases, to be non-uniform around the drift openings, and to be increasingly retarded toward a zero rate by increases in prop load.

WHAT Colonel Dwight says regarding the treat-ment of oxidized ores1 holds true also of the silver-lead smelting operations in Utah. The ore sought for was such as would, with appropriate fluxes, yield slag, and "lead bullion," as the lead reduced from the ore and carrying its gold and silver, was called. No matte, and probably little or no speiss, was yielded, and hence there was nothing to roast, either of ore or matte. But, by 1880, when I first took hold in smelting, there was quite a production of matte at the works of the Ger-mania Smelting and Refining Co., Utah, because, by that time, ores containing some pyrite and galena were being smelted. This was due, as at the Grant Works, Denver, to the more attractive price paid for the treatment of such ores. The matte, containing about 5 per cent. copper, was accordingly heap-roasted and returned to the blast furnace for the recovery of its contained metals. By this time there had been built a long-bedded, hand-rabbled reverber-atory roaster with a hearth of about 40 by 10 ft. in size, and in this matte and ore, crushed at the sampling mill, was treated. When, in 1892, I took control of this works, called& now the Germania Lead Works, three other roasters had been added, but the prac-tice of heap-roasting continued. This had the merit of needing no equipment, and of doing good work, because the pieces that were imperfectly roasted went back upon the next roast heap. At this time, when some suitable lump ore was obtainable, I roasted in heaps, in a satisfactory way. By 1892, the Bruckner cylinder roaster had been installed, which, compared with the reverberatory roaster, reduced labor. As such a cylinder revolves, a talus of ore is formed within it and at the same time fresh surfaces are exposed to the air, but the trouble was that the air did not reach to the bottom of the cylinder. This we corrected by placing a steam jet at the fire-box end, to project the air down-ward upon this stagnant ore, thus increasing the speed and completeness of roasting without at the same time increasing dust formation. The firing, if skilfully done, gave a somewhat sintered product, but with certain ores a slight access of heat over the normal would cause accretions to form within the cylinder near the fire end. These could be cut off by running back the fire box and barring off the crusts. It was in 1895 that the Bruckner cylinders at the Arkansas Valley plant, Leadville, were giving unsatis-factory service and I was called in to investigate. The steam jet was put in use as at the Germania Lead Works, but we found that, due to the altitude (10,500 ft.), combustion was feebler than at sea level or even at 4000 to 5000 ft. Later it appears, as Colonel Dwight states, that R. D. Rhodes and Mots sought to increase the air supply by admission through perforated tiles, but the trouble was due to the air itself.

Phase equilibria in the Ti-Cr-Mo system have been investigated for alloys containing 100 to 40 pct Ti in the temperature range 550° to 1300°C. Five experimental isothermal sections and a surface of incipient melting are presented in addition to a summary projection of the space. Seven vertical sections have been constructed from the isothermal sections. A STUDY of the system Ti-Cr-Mo was undertaken as part of a program sponsored by Watertown Arsenal toward the development of titanium-base phase equilibrium diagrams of potential technical importance to alloy development. The scope of the investigation included the composition range contained by the titanium corner and the line of 64 pct Ti (all compositions are by weight) and the temperature range 550" to 1100°C. A surface of incipient melting was constructed from measurements on a large number of alloys. The system Ti-Cr has been established.&apos;-? The phase diagram is characterized by a wide miscibility field of the solid solution at elevated temperatures and a eutectoid reaction of the type: (15 pct Cr) + TiCr, (685C). The a solid solution has a very limited capacity for solution of chromium (< 0.5 pct Cr). The intermediate phase TiCr2 has at best a very narrow composition range. It has been shown that two allotropic modifications of this phase exist. However, this behavior does not appear to be perceptibly reflected in the form of phase boundaries of the type + TiCr,. In the system Ti-Mo,9-10 the phase is stabilized to successively lower temperatures with increasing molybdenum content. There are no known intermediate phases. The a solid solution is limited to less than 0.5 pct Mo. Because of the very extensive range of the phase, the ternary system was ideally suited to the determination of the phase boundaries by the parametric method of Andersen and Jette." A parametric surface was constructed to provide the necessary basis for the application of this method. Preparation and Treatment of Alloys More than 60 alloy compositions were prepared for the study of this system. Alloy buttons of 10 grams were arc-melted in a nonconsumable electrode furnace using inert atmosphere protection and a water-cooled copper crucible. The construction and operation of this type of melting unit have been adequately described elsewhere.&apos;&apos; To insure complete solution of alloy additions, the buttons were remelted alternately on top or bottom as many as five times. This was accomplished by a suitable mechanism for "flipping" over the ingots. Iodide titanium (99.97 pct Ti) was used as the alloy base. An especially high quality chromium (99.9 pct Cr) was obtained from the National Research Corp. Molybdenum sheet (0.005 in.) of 99.9 pct purity was used.

The members of the society are doubtless aware that the production of American Bessemer steel works is constantly increasing; that the same converters and machinery are doing more work every year. This enlarged output is due to various causes, chiefly the following: 1st. Better organization—better knowledge on the part of both managers and men, of the plant and the process; of the way to economize the more exhausting labor, and of the arrangement of the details of labor and operations so that they shall not conflict; also, more pluck—a greater willingness to take risks, or, more properly, such an intimate knowledge of the nature and capacities of the refractory linings in various stages of disrepair, and the probable be- . havior of the fluid metal at various stages of its treatment, that the precise nature of the risk may be better known, so that the works may be crowded to their full capacity. In the early practice, after getting four or five consecutive heats in a day, the men preferred to " let well enough alone," and to devote the remaining time to preparation for another turn. Now, thirty, and sometimes forty heats are regularly made during the twenty-four hours, day after day, without the frequent occurrence and without the fear of breakdowns or " messes," as the spilling of steel charges was graphically named in Sheffield. 2d. Some rock mechanics theorists believe that if a hydraulically placed backfill can be introduced in a stoped out area, which will minimize wall closure by taking high stresses across the fill with minimum compaction, then heavy ground and rock burst phenomena will be minimized. The paper will discuss a large scale laboratory project when fill strength was increased over four times by the head vibrated method and up to well over 20 times by the double placed, cemented, vibrated head method when compared to conventionally placed fills. The only preconditioning of the 60% solids by weight slurry was the addition of cement in some tests.

Abstract-Although the ore microscopist routinely examines polished sections to determine the mineralogy and texture of ores, his importance to the solution of problems peripheral to geology is not always fully realized. The techniques which he uses can be applied with little modification to the solution of a wide variety of beneficiation problem. By extending his studies beyond those normally considered to be of interest to the geologist, he can include examinations of polished sections of selected mill products. This is a logical extension, because the minerals and textures in the polished sections of ores are the same as those in mill Products. The mill dressing engineer should be more aware of the types of beneficiation problems that can be solved by the ore microscopist and what the ore microscopist can do for him. A greater degree of cooperation between the ore microscopist and the mill dressing engineer can be of significant mutual benefit. Ore microscopy holds an advantage over chemical analysis, because the interrelations and combinations of the mineral constituents of an ore or mil1 product can be visually determined. This advantage provides solutions to many beneficiation problems. Locking is a type of beneficiation problem that is particularly amenable to ore microscopy. The percentage, type, and distribution of locked particles can be readily determined with the aid of an ore microscope and an estimate made of the extent of additional grinding required for liberation. The extent of intimately locked types, which no reasonable amount of grinding will liberate, can also be evaluated. Mineral coating conditions, free particles of a deleterious mineral, and free particles of a valuable mineral held in floculated clusters of gangue are other features that can readily be observed. In some instances, visual examination may show that the problem is not one of locking. Photomicrographs illustrate the variety of beneficiation problems for which the ore microscope is applicable. These problems and their resolution demonstrate the importance of the instrument and show the value of close coordination between the mill dressing engineer and the ore microscopist.

INTRODUCTION FOR a number of years the senior author has been interested in the various geologic and engineering problems involved in the development of the petroliferous districts of northeastern Mexico, having in a previous paper 1 endeavored to present a summarized statement of the information relating to the geology and soil resources of this region. Of the many interesting geologic phenomena, perhaps those which have been the object of more speculation relate to the igneous intrusions which, in places, have a controlling influence on the accumulation of oil in commercial quantities, a relationship which has been tentatively explained by various observers with as many interestingly different views. The authors of the present paper aim to record, in the course of a general discussion of the various viewpoints, some additional data, and present further tentative conclusions with a view to rounding out an up-to-date summary of the subject. The greater part of the area in question lies in the State of Vera Cruz, only a northwest fraction being in the State of San Luis Potosi. Vera Cruz is bounded on the north by the State of Tamaulipas, the northernmost of the Mexican States along the Gulf. The topography of the States of Tamaulipas and Vera Cruz and of Texas and Louisiana to the north, is controlled by the Gulf coastal plain which in northern Vera Cruz has an average width of about 60 miles, the transitional topography between that of the rugged flanks of the Sierra and the lowlands of the coast being made up of a series of terraces and irregular hills and valleys.

Low-frequency mechanical damping measurements were made to investigate internal friction in Fe-A1 alloys. The atomic ordering of the Fe-A1 system strongly influenced the stress-induced ordering internal friction. Magnetoelastic damping was also encounteyed and was shown to be reduced by the application of a static stress. THIS paper describes some damping experiments made on alloys of Fe and Al. Stress-induced ordering internal friction was measured with samples containing from 9.8 to 31.3 at. pct Al. Aluminum is soluble in a-Fe to about 50 at. pct and forms at least two long-range ordered structures, Fe3Al and Feu.&apos; Stress-induced ordering internal friction is known to occur in many substitutional solid solutions, but few measurements of this damping effect have been made with alloy systems that have pronounced ordering tendencies. LeClair and Lomer developed expressions relating the relaxation strength of the damping process to the degree of atomic ordering and predicted that stress-induced ordering internal friction would be zero with complete ordering.&apos; This concept was confirmed experimentally by Lulay and Wert using the system cd-Mg It is also consistent with the weak stress-induced ordering peaks observed in P -brass by Artman and in 16 wt pct Al Fe-Al by bert.&apos; It was expected, therefore that the ordering characteristics of the system Fe-Al would strongly influence the stress-induced ordering internal friction exhibited by the experimental alloys. SAMPLE PREPARATION The alloys used in this investigation were induction melted under vacuum using high-purity melting stock. The iron was electrolytically refined Plastiron 101 which contained 99.85 wt pct Fe. The aluminum was a special 99.95 pct pure grade supplied by Alcoa. The only other raw material was spectrographically pure graphite which was used in small quantities as a deoxidant. The amount of carbon used was slightly in excess of the amount required to completely deoxidize the melt; this resulted in residual carbon contents of 0.01 to 0.02 pct in the finished alloys. The vacuum cast 2 1/2-in. diam ingots were hot rolled to 5/8-in. diam round bars. Portions of these bars were hot swaged and hot drawn to 0.050-in. diam wire. Straight pieces of the hot drawn wire were slowly heated to a temperature of 1300°C in a He atmosphere. After holding for 4 hr, the samples were allowed to cool in the furnace. This annealing treatment resulted in grain growth in the samples, the final grain size being about the same as the wire diameter. The grain boundaries were oriented perpendicularly to the wire axis, giving a bamboo grain structure. The existence of a preferred orientation could not be detected in these coarse grained samples. If the samples had a fiber structure, this probably would have been the same in all samples because of similar processing, thus the influence of crystal orientation on the relaxation strength would have been similar in all samples. In discussion of Dr. Fitterer&apos;s paper on electrolytic separation of slag inclusions, some results from experiments on electrolyzing high-carbon steels at the SKF Research Laboratory were given. l We had been working for a number of years on chemical methods of separating the inclusions but could not find any solvent that would dissolve the steel without attacking some of the inclusions, particularly the sulfides in which we were mostly interested at the time, nor any that would dissolve all sulfide or silica in filings as fine as 300 mesh without attacking the iron. Electrolytic methods had also been tried without any real progress until we learned from the Bureau of Mines about the use of the collodion membrane around the anode. Our early difficulties were to some extent different from those of the Bureau of Mines, perhaps because of experimenting on steels of higher carbon content, but most of our difficulties were of the same nature as those of the Bureau. Formation of large quantities of basic hydroxides was traced to the use of impure and oxidized ferrous sulfate. To protect from oxidation from the atmosphere during electrolysis, after purer chemicals were obtained, a thin layer, 54 in. or less, of molten paraffin was poured over the surface of the cathode liquid, where it solidified. It was found desirable also to hold the cathode chamber slightly acid by initial addition of 0.1 per cent acid (sulfuric or hydrochloric) to prevent precipitation of the hydroxide. This acidity would decrease gradually and the cathode chamber would become neutral before the end of the electrolyzing. The increase in acidity in the anode chamber during our early experiments had appeared to cause attack of the precipitated sulfides in the residue, which originally was analyzed by volumetric method for sulfur, and for this reason a 10 per cent sodium citrate solution was substituted for the sulfate in the anode chamber. With the use of the more reliable Eschka method for sulfur determination (as in coke), there was however no serious attack on the sulfides in the anode chamber with a variety of different liquids, as shown in Tables 2 and 4. Hot springs, geysers, steam-emanating fumaroles- these creatures of nature were until recently little more than geological curiosities, but today they are exciting the interest of engineers around the world for it has been shown that such hyperthermal areas can be profitably harnessed by man to provide heat and power for his communities. Although water from hot springs was used centuries ago to heat some Korean dwellings, is being used today by one-third of Iceland&apos;s population for similar purposes, and is finding industrial applications in New Zealand and elsewhere, the most dramatic use of geothermal energy has been its conversion into electricity. The largest installation at the present time is that at Larderello, Italy, where the Count of Larderello began to experiment in the production of electricity from geothermal steam in 1904. Eight years later after a quarrel with the local power company, the Count installed his first steam turbine, a unit of 250 kw capacity.

The methods of handling the oil output of the Mid-Continent fields are not unlike those practised in other oil fields of the United States, and it is not expected that this paper will present any entirely novel ideas. Some features of the practice of handling this oil may be of interest, however. Wooden Gaging Tanks Practically all of the oil sold to pipe line? and other purchasing agencies throughout the Mid-Continent field is gaged from wooden tanks. Steel gaging tanks are slowly coming into use, and are preferable in many ways—leakage and evaporation are reduced, and the strapping and recalculation of capacities are unnecessary. The wooden tanks are slightly coned to facilitate tightening the hoops. The sizes in common use are 250, 500, 800 and 1600 bbl. The number and the capacity of the gaging tanks upon any producing oil property depend upon its production, and the facilities for disposing of the output. The 1600-bbl. size was the most common in the Cushing field, particularly during the period of flush production. The tanks are distributed over the leased premises in groups of two, three, and four tanks each, and these are filled from flow tanks, or through direct pipe connections with the heads of the wells. Flow tanks are merely temporary reservoirs to facilitate the transfer of oil from the wells to the gaging tanks. They diminish fire risk, and are considered indispensable on small producing properties where water is pumped with the oil, as they permit the refuse and water to &apos;settle out before the production is run to the gaging tanks. strapping and Calculations After a gaging tank has been strapped (measured) and its contents computed, a deduction of 3 per cent. is made from its computed volume. SINCE I have mentioned the art of alchemy in. many parts of this treatise of mine, especially when &apos;came to the description of the practice of various operations,* I do not here intend to argue as to whether it may be called true or not. But in case it is true, inasmuch as it is seen in operation to be a result dependent on the actions and virtues of fires, I should not pass by in silence without speaking at all of this art here, nor would I wish to do so, especially since I think that you do not really know what it is except in so far as common report is heard everywhere to the effect that whoever carries it to completion makes silver and gold with it. Because of this belief, many seek it with much time, labor, and expense, as I know you have often heard related, if not elsewhere, by me in the chapter on gold that I have written in this volume. Now do not think that I wish to teach you this art here, for I am one of those who do not know it. Therefore I shall tell you here, so that you may know more, only. that those workers who so eagerly follow after and seek it proceed by just two pathways. One is that which takes its enlightenment from the words of the wise philosophers, by means of which they think to attain it. This they call the just, holy, and good way, and they, say that in this they are but imitators and assistants of Nature, indeed, manipulators and true physicians-of .mineral bodies, purging them of superfluities and assisting them by augmenting their virtue and freeing them from their defects. In this way they sometimes proceed to corrupt these bodies in order to be able to separate the elements they contain so as to reduce them, if possible, to their primary materials, as they call them, or sometimes they convert them into new substances by means of this art or by adding another spirit different from the first one. Thus they seek in this way to bring these materials to a certain point of corruption or to a separation of elements, or to remove or add spirits to things, or to make coarse materials subtle and sometimes to make subtle materials coarse. Therefore, as you can understand, these persons, with bridle broken, run a circular track night and day, without ever having rest; and surely I do not know whether anyone has ever arrived at the desired goal. MY subject covers the effect that recent metallurgy has had on operations at the Utah-Delaware mine. This mine is the old Highland Boy mine of Bingham Canyon, Utah, one that has now been in operation for about 30 years. It was first operated by Messrs. Weir and Newhouse as a gold mine, under direction of the Highland Boy Gold Mining Co. The ore was oxidized gold ore and it was treated on the property in a cyanidation plant. During the process of development, sulfide ore was found assaying about 5 per cent copper. It proved to be the discovery of what is yet the largest sulfide copper orebody in the State. The first shipment was made in December, 1896. A smelter was built in Salt Lake Valley to treat this ore and not long after the property was sold to the Utah Consolidated Mining Co. From 1900 to 1924, the mine was a large producer of direct-smelting ore which averaged for many years 4.5 per cent. copper, then later dropped to 2 per cent. copper. During the years 1912 to 1920, direct-smelting lead ore was also mined. In 1918&apos;and 1919 ore developments at depth showed a decided increase in silica content and a porphyry sill so closely associated with the ore that it was impossible to mine the ore clean and it was found necessary to build a copper flotation Eoncentrator at Tooele. The mill had a capacity of 1000 tons a day and made a recovery of 90 per cent., and would have been responsible for a continuance of profitable operations had it not been for a slump in the copper market and the necessary high cost of mining ore on the lower levels. RESULTS OF SELECTIVE FLOTATION In 1924 the mine was on the point of a shutdown which had all the earmarks of being permanent; it was being operated at a heavy loss and preparations were made to pull the pumps and salvage the machinery. The plant at Tooele was remodelled for selective flotation by the Inter- national Smelting Co. in order to treat custom ores, and incidentally to clean up a possible 10,000 tons of lead-zinc ore which it was thought possible to get in the Utah-Delaware before shutting the mine down. DURING the last several years the authors have been conducting tests on a tensile machine that autographically records load-elongation data. In certain tests at elevated temperatures on face-centered cubic, hexagonal close-packed, and body-centered cubic materials (binary alloys of nickel, zirconium, and iron), the load-elongation curve as shown in Fig. 1 reaches a maximum load (Pmax,) at relatively small amounts of strain and a large amount of elongation occurs subsequently with a continuously decreasing load, until finally localized necking and fracture take place. This early maximum load behavior has been found without the accompanying evidence of localized necking as has been assumed by some, or of evidence of cracking as observed by others.&apos; This behavior has also been observed by Nadai and Manjoinez whose results are in good agreement with ours. The prior strain, strain rate, test temperature, and crystal structure affect the observations. The influence of prior strain was observed in tests on unalloyed zirconium at 300°C in which specimens containing large amounts of prior strain (cold work) exhibited the type of curve shown in Fig. 1. No localized necking was observed after strain as much as that of point B. Annealed and recrystallized specimens of the same material showed a load-elongation curve with maximum load occurring after considerable strain hardening and at the beginning of localized necking. Interrupted tests (Fig. 2) show no loss in strength because of recovery or recrys-tallization during an interval at temperature without load. Recovery under stress such as found by Wood and Suiter3 in aluminum is now being investigated as one possible explanation. The strain rate is a contributing variable as shown in Fig. 3, a test on high purity nickel. Here the strain rate was decreased by a factor of ten during a test in which the maximum load was reached at a small strain. The slope of the true stress-true strain curve was positive with the more rapid strain rate and negative with the slower strain rate. In many binary ferrites an added effect of temperature has been observed. Fig. 4 shows the load-elongation plots for a binary ferritic alloy containing 2 pct Mo. The slope of the small portion of the stress-strain curve obtained at a strain rate of 0.01 mhr1 changes sign from negative to positive on going
