(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) I. THE FRITZ ENGINEERING LABORATORY. TEE Fritz Engineering Laboratory was built under the direction of John Fritz, and presented by him to the University. A view of the building, looking east, is shown in Fig. 1. . The building was started in 1909, and completed in 1910, although all of the equipment was not placed until later. Mr. Fritz gave his personal attention to the details of construction and equipment, and it was his custom to drive over every day to the University from his home in Bethlehem, and spend some hours watching the work, offering suggestions, making changes, and planning new work. The result is a building and an equipment which embody his practical ideas. The laboratory structure is of the steel mill-building type, of light-colored brick, 91 by 114 ft., of which a section is shown in Fig. 2 and the floor-plan in Fig. 3. The steel frame carries the roof and traveling crane-way. Ample light has been provided by numerous windows in the side and end walls, in the clerestory, and by a skylight, 84 ft. long and 9 ft. wide, in the north roof. The main aisle of the building is 49 ft. 2 in. between centers of crane-columns, and has a clear height of 40 ft. The remainder of the width is taken up by two side aisles, 18 ft. high. The laboratory consists of four sections: (1) A general testing-section, containing the testing-machinery, a small machine shop, and an office; (2) a cement-testing room; (3) a room for making and storing concrete test-specimens; (4) a hydraulic section.

A study was made of the growth kinetics of B-brass layers in a-brass us y-brass diffusion couples in which both phases were saturated in the 6 phase. It was found that useful estimates can be made of the difhsion coefficients at the ß-phase interfaces from interface displacement data, which are relatively easy to measure experimentally; also, a useful estimate can be made of the mean heat of activation for diffusion from layer growth data. The effects of pressure on layer growth kinetics were explored and found to be consistent with a vacancy model for diffusion in 6 brass in both the disordered and ordered temperature range. 1 HE study of multiphase diffusion receives relatively little attention in comparison with that devoted to diffusion in homogeneous materials. Of the hundred or so papers on diffusion written each year,' only a few are devoted to the subject, and it is the rare review article2,3 that devotes any space to multiphase diffusional phenomena. This is unfortunate, since the metallurgist frequently encounters practical situations involving cementation processes such as cladding, protective coating of metals, and so forth in which he needs guidance of a fundamental nature. The investigation of multiphase diffusion phenomena is complicated by the fact that one must consider reactions at phase interfaces as well as the migration of atoms within the individual phases; these reactions cause the interfaces to be displaced within the diffusion zone. The relative displacement of two adjacent interfaces corresponds to the growth of an intermetallic layer, and it is not difficult to determine experimentally the kinetics of layer growth. In the past few years it has been pointed out4,5 that valuable fundamental information may be gained about diffusion coefficients and the concentrations at interfaces through a study of their motion. Accordingly, it is the purpose of this paper to report the results of an investigation of interface motion in a simple multiphase binary system. In the work reported herein, attention was focussed on the growth of a 6 -brass layer in a diffusion couple prepared from a- and y-brass compositions saturated with respect to the 6 phase. This particular system was chosen for a number of reasons. First, the bcc ß-brass phase is disordered for all compositions at temperatures above 468°C and becomes increasingly long-range ordered for all compositions at temperatures below 454° C;6,7 thus, the effects of a variation in order on interface displacement could be determined. Second, diffusion coefficients have already been obtained as a function of temperature in the ß phase both in the ordered and disordered Re- and a theoretical picture of the mechanism of diffusion in this and other ordered solutions is emerging.11'12 Third, some thermodynamic data are available for the a-, ß-, and ?-brass phases,13,4 and these data could be used to gain insight into questions of phase equilibria and concentrations at phase interfaces.

IN 1901, the United States produced 69 million barrels of crude oil, which was 41.4 per cent of the world production. By 1931, these figures were 850 million barrels and 62.1 per cent respectively, showing over this period of thirty years an increase in the world production of 718 per cent. Over this same period, the increase in the demand for technically trained men in the industry was much greater than the increase in crude-oil production. This was because much of the increase in production was secured by the application of geology and physics to the finding of new oil fields and by .the development of engineering methods and equipment incident to drilling and producing from much greater .depths.

NUMEROUS studies have been reported on how the mechanical properties of a bcc metal are affected by interstitial solute atoms in the temperature range where appreciable diffusion occurs in finite time. Only recently, though, has work on an "interstitial-free" iron been reported, this by Leslie and sober,' on an Fe-0.15 pct Ti alloy. The data was limited to a maximum temperature of 296°K. This work presents a systematic study of the flow stress and the activation volume of a similar material as a function of plastic deformation over the temperature range 253" to 473°K. The material studied was Ferrovac E iron containing 0.01 wt pct C and 0.0002 wt pct N annealed at 870°C for 1 hr, and the same iron with an addition of 0.15 wt pct Ti annealed at 870°C for 80 hr; cooling rates being 75°C per hr. In the latter alloy depletion of interstitials in the a-iron matrix associated with the second phase formation was expected. The temperature dependence of the flow stress was measured at 6 = 3.33 x 10-5 sec-1 from 253" to 473°K as a function of the deformation in 0.01 intervals from 0.03 to 0.12 strain. Results for two strains, 0.03 and 0.09 are shown in Fig. 1. The flow stress increased and reached a maximum in the Ferrovac E iron with increasing temperature, but showed a consistent gradual decrease in the Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy. A yield point and Luders region, observed in Ferrovac E, was absent in the Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy. Also, the Ferrovac E exhibited a serrated stress-strain behavior in the temperature range 330" to 400°K; dynamic strain-aging characteristics were absent for the titanium alloy. The activation volume was determined over the same temperature range by the method of stress relaxation at constant strain. Results are shown in Fig. 2. At the temperatures of serrated stress-strain behavior in Ferrovac E the activation volume was found to increase toward infinity and, as the temperature rose, to decrease, to about 100 to 200 v/b3. By contrast, the activation volume for the Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy tended to increase continuously from the initial value of approximately 300 at 300°K to more than 800 at 473°K. Above 400°K, then, the corresponding activation volume values of Ferrovac E were less than that of the Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy. The activation volumes, Fig. 2, appear to depend on dislocation-interstitial interaction in Ferrovac E and on dislocation-dislocation interaction in Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy. The gradual increase in the latter metal is associated with thermally activated motion of dislocation segments.' The decrease of the activation volume in Ferrovac E above 400°K is probably related to the diminishing effect of interstitials on dislocations. IN many of the early investigations of the aging of titanium alloys, it was observed that the retained beta phase could be aged to a high hardness without an apparent change in microstructure; moreover, in some alloys it was found that even a very rapid quench produced beta having an anomalously high hardness. What appeared to be hard beta phase was designated as "beta prime," to distinguish it from the softer normal retained beta phase. Frost and co-workers'.' demonstrated that the increased hardness is caused by the formation of a metastable phase, omega, which can be identified from its X-ray diffraction pattern. This reaction also has been studied by Brotzen, et a1.,3 and the structure of the omega phase has been published by Silcock, et al.," and by Austin and Doig.3 The X-ray diffraction analysis by Austin and Doig indicated that omega is low in alloy content, approaching the composition of the stable alpha. The aging process proceeds by the path Thus, overaging results in the formation of alpha and the ultimate disappearance of omega. This is accompanied by a decrease in hardness and a recovery of ductility. The present work represents a study of the aging process in a high-purity Ti-6.4 Mn alloy, in which optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and hardness data were correlated. The specimens, 1/8-in. sections cut from 1/4-in.-diam rod, were heated in argon to a temperature just into the beta field (810°C), held for 1 hr, and water-quenched. The aging samples were heated in air for 1 hr at 300 to 500°C. The specimens were ground and mechanically polished, finishing with alternate etching and polishing on a slow-speed wheel to remove disturbed metal from the surface. The surface finally was swab-etched, rinsed with tap water, and air-dried. The etchant used was an aqueous solution containing 1 1/2 pct HF and 3 1/2 pct HNO3. This procedure is identical with that used for preparing metallographic specimens, except that the optimum degree of final etching required for electron microscopy may vary from that used for light microscopy. Metal replicas, backed with silica, were prepared from plastic strip-pings for examination with the electron microscope. Complete details of the procedures used for preparing these replicas are available elsewhere." Fig. 1 shows a comparison between the structures revealed by the electron microscope and those obtained by conventional light microscopy. Hardness and X-ray diffraction data are listed in Table I. No evidence of a second phase is apparent in the optical micrographs for the as-quenched sample, or for the specimens aged at 300 or 400°C; fine alpha particles can be seen in the specimen aged at 500°C. In the electron micrographs, visible equiaxed pocks appear in the as-quenched specimen, and, with increasing density, in the samples aged at 300 and 400°C. After aging at 500°C, the structure becomes markedly coarser and develops an oriented appearance of a second phase, coincident with the appearance of visible alpha particles in the light micrographs. These observations are confirmed by X-ray diffraction and hardness data. In these specimens, aged for 1 hr, the intensity of the omega pattern increases to a maximum at the 400°C aging temperature, corresponding to maximum hardness and the maximum density of pocks in the electron micrographs. IT has long been known that there are wide variations in the thermo-electric potential of pyrite. In the last few years a study of this variation and other properties of pyrite was carried out at the University of Toronto by F. G. Smith on specimens of pyrite from many loyalities. As a result of these studies the pyrite geothermometer was developed by Professor Smith. The calibration of the pyrite geothermometer is based on the assumption that "crystals of any one electronically conducting mineral species deposited at a high temperature have a more positive thermoelectric potential than crystals deposited at a low temperature, and the thermo-electric potential varies continuously between any given limits of the temperature of deposition." The cause of the variation was postulated to be crystal discontinuities, such as lineage boundaries. As yet this postulated relationship has not been established as fact. On theoretical grounds it is indicated that the thermo-electric potential of pyrite or any other partial conductor is dependent upon a number of factors as well as the temperature of formation. For this and other reasons there is ground for doubt as to the validity of the relationship postulated above. To date a large number of readings have been made with the pyrite geothermometer which have been recorded in terms of the calibration of the instrument in degrees centigrade. So far most of the pyrite tested by this technique has been in association with gold ore. The values for the temperature of formation obtained in these tests appear to be reasonable and, in relation to geological problems, to vary in the right sense. Determinations on some specimens not in association with gold ore have given readings that appear to be much too high, taking into account the probable maximum temperature of the host rock. To sum up, although many determinations made with the pyrite geothermometer appear to give reasonable values for the temperature of formation of the pyrite, there are at the same time other readings which seem anomalous. On the basis of an examination of available results of work with the pyrite geothermometer, two problems must be considered: 1—the validity of the calibration of the pyrite geothermometer; and 2— the nature of the distribution of the thermo-electric potentials of pyrite in relation to the specific problems that have been examined. In this paper the academic problem relating to the validity of the calibration of the pyrite geothermometer will not be discussed. Instead, the variations of thermo-electric potential of pyrite in association with gold veins will be discussed with regard to specific examinations. The first of these two examinations deals with the distribution of thermo-electric potentials of pyrite in association with a gold vein and was carried out in the McIntyre Porcupine Mine, Schumacher, Ont., in the summer of 1949 as part of a study with this technique. The second problem deals with variations of thermo-electric potential of pyrite in gold ore specimens from all over the world. The specimens used in this study were part of the private collection of Frank Ebbutt, geologist for Howe Sound Exploration Co. Results of Detailed and Reconnaissance Studies In discussion of the results of determinations made in these two studies the values of thermo-electric potential in millivolts will be used. It will be noted that in some of the diagrams the determinations are recorded in terms of pyrite geothermometer temperatures. Fig. 1 is a calibration chart relating pyrite geothermometer temperatures and thermoelectric potentials. A full discussion of the technique is given in the original paper by F. G. Smith.' The Burns Harbor Plant was designed to produce and process large ingots into plate, hot rolled sheet, cold rolled sheet and tin plate. Rimmed ingots, in particular, are poured 96" to 106" high and weigh up to 85,000 lbs. During the latter part of 1970, a quality problem was encountered involving white line "sliver" defects on the surface of cold rolled, low carbon, rimmed steel sheet. Sheets containing these defects are not desirable for exposed automotive items because of the possibility of opening during forming or becoming more apparent after forming. Metallographic work located and identified two basic types of inclusions within the white line defects: (1) complex oxides consisting largely of iron and manganese oxides and (2) scale-type iron oxide. The presence of these oxides strongly suggested that the-white line defects were resulting from an unsound, unclean rim zone.

BORON as a hardenability agent of commercial importance has been the subject of extensive study in recent years. It has been suggested in the past that boron increases hardenability by combining with nitrogen, thus rendering it innocuous.&apos; More recently it has been proposed that boron increases hardenability by reducing the free energy of sites of ferrite and pearlite nucleation.&apos; The segregation of boron to grain boundaries, the primary site of nucleation, would account for the large hardenability effect of minute additions of boron in steel. This grain boundary theory has found general acceptance while the concept of boron as a nitrogen scavenger has been disregarded. However, the interaction of boron and nitrogen in steel is considered to be important to hardenability because boron may be made ineffective by combination with nitrogen.". * The present work was undertaken to examine some of the effects of boron and nitrogen arid their interaction in steel. A base composition of moderate hardenability was chosen. This was a 0.35 pct C steel containing 2.50 pct Ni and 0.30 Mo. This composition was used because it contained no strong carbide, nitride, or Table I. The other alloys examined were modifications of the base composition and contained nitrogen, boron, or nitrogen plus boron. The compositions of the four alloys used are listed in Table I. The alloys were vacuum melted from electrolytic iron, electrolytic nickel, ferromolybdenum, and fer-roboron. When required, nitrogen was added by admitting a partial pressure of nitrogen over the melt after vacuum melting. The alloys were cast into 21h-in. diam ingots and hot rolled to %-in. sq bars. No ingot pattern was discernible on the polished and etched cross sections of the hot-rolled bars. The alloys were normalized at 1650°F, then machined into standard %-in. diam end-quench hardenability test bars. Four different austenitizing treatments were used: 60 rnin at 1550°F, 45 rnin at 1800°F, 30 rnin at 2000°F, and 20 rnin at 2000°F followed immediately by 30 rnin at 1550°F. The 1550" and 2000°F treatments were carried out in duplicate for each of the four steels. In order to prevent surface oxidation the bars were austenitized while buried under charcoal in an atmosphere of argon. After quenching the bars in a conventional end-quench fixture, the hardness surveys were made in the usual fashion on parallel flats ground along opposite sides of each bar. These were ground 0.050 in. deep rather than the conventional 0.015 in., to avoid decarburized or deboronized regions.5 The austenite grain sizes which resulted from each heat treatment were observed metallographically using Vilella&apos;s etch for martensite. The criterion used as a measure of hardenability was the distance from the quenched ends of the bars at which a hardness of RC 35 was observed. This hardness represented the inflection point on the hardness vs distance plot. Fig. 1 shows the hardenability of each steel after the several heat treatments. The duplicate tests demonstrated excellent reproducibility; the distance to Rc 35 was reproduced within 1/16 in. for duplicate test bars. All four alloys had the same grain-coarsening characteristics. Neither boron nor nitrogen had any observable effect on grain size. The grain sizes resulting from the various austenitizing treatments were ASTM 7 at 1550°F, ASTM 4 at 1800°F, and ASTM 2 at 2000°F. The small amount of boron in the boron steel greatly enhanced hardenability when the samples were austenitized at 1550°F. The low hardenability of the boron plus nitrogen steel showed that nitrogen eliminated the boron contribution to hardenability. Both steels containing nitrogen, with and without boron, exhibited lower hardenability than the base composition when quenched from 1550°F.

The growth of grain boundary films and Widmanstiitten plates of proeutectoid cementite in hypereutectoid steels ulas considered quantitatively in three plain carbon steels and one "pure" iron-carbon alloy. Growth was found to take place at a slower rate than would be predicted on the basis of a model invoking rate control by long range diffusion of carbon. The films in the pure alloy grew faster than those in the plain carbon steels. A possible explanation is suggested. In 1904, Nernsst&apos; and Brunner2 postulated that ionic crystals growing in supersaturated aqueous solutions grew at rates determined by diffusion through the solution to the growing crystal interface. The gradient down which the diffusion took place was assumed to be fixed by the supersaturated bulk solution concentration, the concentration dt the crystal surface and some arbitrary distance. The flux of material to the crystal was described as Flux where D is the diffusion coefficient, A the crystal surface area, Ci the bulk solution concentration, Co the saturated solution concentration, and 6 the thickness of the diffusion zone. It is obvious that the expression is an adaptation of F+ick&apos;s3 first law of diffusion (steady state). This was the initial formulation of what will be defined here as "diffusion controlled growth," i.e., growth limited by the long range diffusion of a component either to or from the advancing interface assuming both phases at the interface to be in equilibrium. This idea of equilibrium interface concentration implies an infinite reaction rate at the interface. Volmer, Zener,&apos; and 11schner6 have derived expressions for the diffusion controlled growth of spherical precipitates in metallic systems. These analyses agree that the growth in a given direction should be parabolic with time. Brown and Hawkes7 observed that graphite, formed both from the decomposition of cementite and from the decomposition of eutectoid austenite in cast irons, grew according to a parabolic relationship and, therefore, concluded that the laws of diffusion controlled growth, as defined above, were obeyed. They, among others, failed to consider, however, that parabolic growth is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for diffusion controlled growth. Mehl and Dube"&apos; have pointed out that equilibrium may not be realized because the concentration at the interface cannot change instantaneously from that of the bulk to the saturation value. Furthermore, they propose that an equilibrium solute concentration in the parent phase adjacent to the precipitate would remove the thermodynamic activity gradient across the interface and, thus, stop the growth process. Frisch" has also emphasized the importance of interface concentrations that vary throughout the growth of a new phase. The variation in activity across an interface, as discussed by Onol&apos; and Cahn and Hilliard,12 is of fundamental importance to this question. Ham13 considered the data of Turnbull14 on the growth of barium sulfate in aqueous solutions. He concluded that the data could be analyzed in terms of a radiation-type boundary condition. Flux across interface = K (c, - C,) [21 where C, is the concentration in the solution at the interface, Co the saturated solution concentration, and K the proportionality constant. The edgewise growth of Widmanstlitten plates, frequently referred to as the rate of lengthening, was first considered by Zener.&apos;&apos; Basing a mathematical analysis on steady-state (constant velocity) growth he concluded that where G is the growth rate, D the solute diffusivity, Ci the concentration in the bulk, Co the equilibrium interface concentration, C, the concentration in the precipitate, a a constant, Y the radius of curvature of the edge of the plate, and rC the critical radius, i.e., the radius which would increase the activity of solute at the interface at equilibrium under the influence of capillarity to that of the bulk. E1 Teniente made blockcaving look easy. Ore rolling out the Teniente 5 level has the appearance of nicely screened riprap ready for road dressing. Actually it has been mostly size-reduced by nature abetted along the way by the occasional nudge of a double jack wielded by a buitrero (grizzly-man). It is the famous upside-down mine at Sewell, where the ore flow is down and the people flow is up. Sewell (rhymes with jewel) is the impossible cluster of dwellings clinging to a high Andean spur where 13,000 inhabitants find that staircases must substitute for sidewalks. There is no mining man who is not familiar with the picture of Sewell-by day a pyramid of barracks huddled on the high ground out of harm&apos;s way and by night a surprising Christmas tree against the mountain top. Until April 1967, Kennecott&apos;s Braden Copper Co. rocked along producing a not inconsequential amount of copper, 180,000 tpy (all tonnages cited here are short tons), attributable to its not unspectacular mountaineering and engineering achievements. These latter included expertness in building avalanche-control fencing; operation of a 35,000-tpd concentrator on the Sewell mountain spur; a spectacular aerial tramway to move 1600 tpd of concentrates to the smelter at Caletones, and occasionally to provision Sewell when snow blocks the road; a cliff hanger of a railroad 43 miles down to the rich bottom land at Rancagua; and last but not least, a 40-mile tailing launder that sweeps across deep valleys on trestles that rival those of the Romans.

Extensive gravity-meter surveys were carried out in the Sinai Peninsula and the Eastern and Western Deserts. Seismic and magnetometer work vas conducted on a restricted scale. The two calcium sulfate minerals-gypsum and anhydrite-occur in many parts of the world, and gypsum has long been of economic importance in the family of industrial minerals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4•2H2O) and anhydrite, the anhydrous form (CaSO4) are frequently found in close association, and it is seldom that a calcium sulfate deposit will consist exclusively of one mineral or the other. Although known gypsum deposits are extensive, anhydrite makes up the largest part of total calcium sulfate reserves. However, it has very minor economic use, and most of the following discussion will be devoted to gypsum. Calcium sulfate is one of the principal constituents of evaporite deposits, and when pure, has the following composition: [Sulfur Combined Lime Trioxide Water (CaO) (SO,) (H2O) Gypsum 32.6% 46.5% 20.9% Anhydrite 41.2% 58.8% -] Deposits of pure gypsum or of pure anhydrite which are large enough to be considered commercial have never been found because of both the metastable relationship between the two minerals, and the presence of impurities such as calcium or magnesium carbonates, chlorides, other sulfate minerals, clay minerals, or silica. As a result most mine production of gypsum will range between 85 and 95% pure. Often it is used as mined, although in certain cases, one or more forms of mineral beneficiation are employed to upgrade the product. End Uses The largest use for gypsum is based upon the unique property which calcium sulfate has of readily giving up, or taking on, water of crystallization. With the application of a moderate amount of heat in a process known as calcining, gypsum is converted to plaster of paris (the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate, CaSO4 ½ H2O) which when mixed with water will set or harden as the calcium sulfate returns to the dihydrate form. This semifinished product, usually called stucco, is then manufactured into a large variety of plasters, wallboard, and block for construction use, or into plasters for industrial applications. About 75% of the gypsum used in the United States is calcined for these purposes. Uncalcined uses of gypsum are principally as a retarder for portland cement, as a soil conditioner, as a mineral filler, and other minor industrial applications. About 25% of the gypsum mined in the United States goes into these markets; however, in less developed countries where construction and other industrial uses may be quite limited, the use of uncalcined gypsum for portland cement retarder may well be the dominant-if not the only-market for the mineral. It has often been noted that calcium sulfate constitutes the world&apos;s largest reserve of sulfur, and minor use of both anhydrite and gypsum has been made to produce sulfuric acid or other sulfur compounds such as ammonium sulfate. However, because sulfur is readily available at lower cost from other sources, use of calcium sulfate has been limited to only a few locations where it could compete economically. No such use is reported in the United States at this time. Mineralogy Anhydrite, CaSO4 because of its geologically rapid conversion to gypsum, and relatively high solubility (about 0.2 g per 100 g H2O) is not often found outcropping in climates wet enough to support abundant vegetation except on steeply dipping slopes or other places where hydrated material is continuously removed. AT the Noralyn mine and mill of International Minerals & Chemical Corp. in Bartow, Fla., process instrumentation has been incorporated in three departments-mining, flotation, and preparation. Use of the dragline is the most difficult aspect of the mining operation to control automatically. At the Noralyn mine there are two draglines, a Bucyrus-Erie 1250-B with 29-yd bucket and 235-ft boom and a Bucyrus-Erie 1150-B with 21-yd bucket and 215-ft boom. These are equipped with a minimum number of instruments, but further instrumentation would increase the operator&apos;s efficiency.

GENTLEMEN Like every other significant activity in the United States today, the work of the Institute has been affected by and adjusted to the prosecution of war against Germany, .Japan and their satellites. As the elaborate engines and materiel of modern mobile warfare are made, for the most part, of metals and other minerals; and are powered by mineral fuels, the industries -represented by the A.I.M.E. are of primary and vital importance. Of some 29 critical materials officially listed by the War Production Board, 24 are minerals. An alternate for one of the others, rated as a nonmineral, is to be made principally from petroleum. This alludes, of course, to rubber. The procurement of tremendous quantities of such raw materials and the effective processing, fabrication, and utilization of them depend on members of those branches of the engineering profession represented by the A.I.M.E.
