THE idea of economical production is usually associated with large operations, tonnages, and mines, with even larger capital behind them. Nevertheless many small mines operate in the shadow of large competitors and make a good showing on the capital invested despite larger overhead expenses. For the purpose of this discussion I will divide the cost of production into classes, and specify opposite each the approximate percentage expended thereon: 1. Labor, including miners and company men; 60 to 75 per cent. 2: Development, including all necessary yardage, room turning, crosscuts, etc.; 7 to 12 per cent. 3. Deadwork, covering payment to miners for handling falls, drawslate, or faults, rock work, water, and in general, all nonproductive labor; 3 to 7 per cent. 4. Supplies: mine timbers, oil, brattice material, lumber, cement, and repairs to equipment; 2 to 6 per cent. 5. Expense: management, selling, office, taxes, etc.; 1 to 5 per cent. 6. Depreciation of coal reserves and royalties; 6 to 10 per cent. 7. Depreciation of equipment and interest on capital invested; 1 to 3 per cent. 8. Fuel; ½ to 1 ½ per cent. The labor cost for a small mine is relatively much lower than for a large mine, particularly the sum paid to company men. Idle-pay expense is cut to a minimum; the labor item being larger than all the others together, a saving in labor makes a decided showing on the total cost. The development charges in small and large mines are about the same. There should be a small showing on the Beadwork item in favor of the small mine. The unit cost for supplies is usually small in the small mine. The operator of the small mine finds, owing to a limited tonnage, that the expenses of management, selling, etc., are abnormally high.

As a result of Engineering Council's request to the Director of the Census, the National Service Committee has been successful in effecting a reclassification of engineers so that all technical men will be listed as such and they will be separate and distinct from the non-technical engi-neers. Thus, the next census will bring an enumeration of all technical engineers together as one unit under the main headings of civil, mech-anical, electrical and raining; architects also will be enumerated separately. This will enable the engineering profession, the Government or any other interested organization to know exactly how many technical men there are in the United States and in each state. The enumeration will also include non-technical engineers, except that there will be no such heading and in order to get the totals of non-technical men all of the various grades of this classification would have to be sorted out and added.

THE Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division for 1945 is one of the most versatile and best-known men in this industry, with wide experience in research and operations and in handling both the men and the materials that are used in enormous quantities. Erle G. (Doe) Hill was born in Santa Ana, (alit, April 21, 1890 and graduated (Bachelor of Science) in mining and metallurgy from the University of California in 1913. For the next five years lie held a variety of jobs as miner, foreman, and null superintendent in gold, silver, copper, and quicksilver mines in the West and in Mexico. As Doe was an individual endowed with an exceptional amount of horse sense, he left the West in 1918, to become instructor of mining engineering and ore dressing at Carnegie Institute of Technology, and while in that post did considerable consulting work as a geologist and mining engineer. In 1920, still possessing the same common sense. he got out of mining engineering and geology and became associate professor of metallurgy at the University of Pittsburgh, a position he retained for nearly ten years.

AMONG the half-dozen major research search projects now being conducted at the Michigan College of Minim, and Technology under the terms of an FERA grant, an important one relates to the use of suspensions in ore dressing. The study has resulted from the constantly widening industrial use of metals and minerals. The modest demands of a few decades ago for these minerals could be easily met from richer deposits. Now, at least in some localities, the richer deposits are nearing exhaustion. Furthermore, advances in the industrial arts and the competition of other minerals and metals have changed the specifications of materials needed by the manufacturers. THE problem of making iron-manganese alloys of scientific purity is a rather difficult one. They cannot be prepared in air because of the readiness with which the metals oxidize at the temperature of melting; and they cannot be prepared in vacuum because of the, high vapor pressure-of- manganese. The very property of: manganese which permits it to be purified interferes with the utilization of the best method of making pure alloys. Accordingly, it is necessary to use a gas atmosphere which will not affect the-properties of the alloys. The gases available for the purposes are hydrogen; helium and argon. Nitrogen forms intermetallic compounds with manganese very readily. Hydrogen, while valuable as a deoxidizer and having the advantage of being comparatively cheap, is explosive over a wide range and, has a rather high thermal conductivity. Helium is reported as, costing little but is difficult to secure at a reasonable price and also has a conductivity nearly as high as hydrogen. Since argon has a sufficiently low thermal conductivity, it has been selected for use in one induction furnace for melting, under a controlled, gas atmosphere, in spite of its cost, which is so high (70 cents to $1.50 per cubic foot) that it must be stored and purified.. Such a gas atmosphere-as argon makes necessary the use of the, high-frequency induction method of heating. It should be remembered that the coefficient of expansion of concrete is nearly that of iron; therefore in constructing flues the design must take account of this important detail. The cracking of flues, mentioned by Mr. Havard as having occurred at a temperature of 100° C. and above, . were possibly caused by neglecting to appreciate the extent of the expansion and contraction of the concrete. Effect of Atmospheric Moisture.-The moisture present in the atmosphere is exceedingly injurious to flues of any material, and those made of concrete are no more susceptible than of brick. My experience with flues of the Monier construction, having walls from 1.5 to 2.5 in. thick plastered upon a net-work of iron rods, was unsatisfactory from the standpoint of dura¬bility.

A combined numerical approach is proposed for the analysis of rock-liner interact ion in tunnels under the effects of severe dynamic loads. The method is based on employing finite element formulations which describe the linear behavior and incorporating it into a finite difference code which can describe the behavior of a jointed rock medium. This method can be applied for the analysis of tunnel systems in rock, and for studying the requirements for adequate support of the tunnel.

The anomaly ratio is obtained by dividing the analyzed value of an element by the anomaly threshold value of the element. The sum of anomaly ratios for all anomaly elements in a sample may be compared with similar sums for other samples, so that samples having the greatest anomaly- ratio totals can be recognized easily. C. R. Watson, C. A. Pringle, H. C. Hase, and W. J. Wallace, who were members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The Thompson Creek Coal & Coke Corp. operates three coal mines which presently supply the United States Steel Corp. with high grade, medium volatile coking coal at a rate of 1000 tpd. Mining is done at an elevation of 8000 ft, approximately 13 miles southwest of the small town of Carbondale, Colo. The coal is cleaned mechanically by heavy media and Deister tables, after which it is trans- ported to the railhead at Carbondale. GENERAL GEOLOGY The coal beds in this area lie in the Mesa Verde formation of Cretaceous age. Three beds are now being mined, with a fourth possibility pending further exploratory work. Formation of the Rocky Mountains tilted the sedimentary strata approximately 30º and created considerable faulting throughout. These faults, which range from a few inches to 35- ft displacement, constitute serious obstacles to mining.

In uranium metallurgy, the main purpose is to obtain a product containing 80-85% U308 (yellowcake) from ores whose average grade is a mere 0.21% U30& Essentially, the task of extraction and concentration involves dissolving the ore's U308 values, followed by purification and concentration of the uranium-rich solution (using such operations as filtration, clarification, and ion-exchange), and then selectively precipitating and isolating U308. Leaching is First Step In yellowcake production mills, the first chemical change occurs by leaching the ore with either sulfuric acid-as done by Anaconda and Kerr-McGee-or with an alkaline solution of, say, sodium carbonate, as done by United Nuclear-Homestake Partners. The choice of either acid or alkaline leaching is not an arbitrary one: it depends on the chemical and physical characteristics of a particular ore. That is, on the presence of clays, organic compounds (usually of carbonaceous origin), and soluble impurities, as well as on the ore's wetness and grindability.

The recently discovered occurrence of diamonds near Mur-freesboro, Pike county, Ark., was brought to our attention by Mr. Samuel W. Reyburn (Trustee for Messrs. C. S. Stifft, A. D. Cohn, August Zinsser, Jr., and himself, owners of the property), through whose courtesy we investigated the locality of the deposit. Prospecting with the diamond-drill is now in active progress; but mining operations on a large scale have not yet been ordered. Geology.—The geology as well as the petrography of this interesting locality has been well described by Messrs. J. C. Branner and R. N. Brackett,' but they did not class it as dia-mondiferous, although Branner suggested that it might be. Briefly summarized, the igneous rock in which the diamonds are found is a vitreous peridotite, forming a stock or volcanic neck, which has broken up through the Carboniferous and Cretaceous quartzites and sandstones. ACCORDING to the traditional definition,1 re-x crystallization is a process taking place upon annealing of cold worked metals, characterized by the appearance of new strain-free grains, growing at the expense of the cold worked grains until ultimately the new crystals completely replace the cold worked structure. In metals like brass this process was observed long ago to take place simultaneously with the return of the mechanical properties to those characteristic of well annealed material. The above definition implicitly assumes that the matrix in which the new grains are growing is essentially still in the cold worked condition at the time it is absorbed by the new grains, i.e., that the energy stored in the metal during cold working is not greatly decreased by recovery, prior to recrystallization. Accordingly, the bulk of this energy is assumed to serve as the driving force for the process of recrystallization. Recently, a great deal of evidence accumulated, indicating that the traditional concept may be considerably in error. Suzuki' found that by far the largest portion of the stored energy of cold work in compressed polycrystalline copper is released in the early stages of annealing, well in advance of recrystallization. Thus, the new recrystallized grains are undoubtedly growing in a matrix which is, at least energetically, no longer in the cold worked condition, but has nearly returned to the annealed state. It is true that in Suzuki's experiments the major hardness changes due to annealing were observed to take place concurrently with the formation and growth of the new grains, but this process apparently involved the release of only a minor residual fraction of the stored energy of cold work. Confirming in this respect the views of Wood," several recent investigations by various techniques lead to the conclusion that the grains of many, if not all, metals in the cold worked condition consist of small, slightly disoriented "crystallites" or "sub-grains".* (After appreciable deformation at room temperature, the subgrain size in copper appears to be about 7.104 cm and in high purity aluminum about 2.10-4 cm.) Recent investigations which demonstrated this phenomenon most convincingly are those of Heidenreich8 with hammered high purity aluminum, of P. B. Hirsch and collaborators7,8 with cold worked polycrystalline aluminum, copper, nickel, iron, gold, etc., and of Warren and Averbach9 with a rolled copper plus 2 pct Si single crystal. In addition to the existence of slightly disoriented sub-grains, the cumulative evidence from these investigations also shows that in the cold worked condition the subgrains themselves are severely strained. With regard to the early stages of annealing, Heiden-reich's results indicate that within the subarains of hammered high purity aluminum the strain gradually disappears, without discernible migration of the subboundaries. This recovery process presumably accounts for the major portion of the energy release

This paper reviews geostatistical work in a coal deposit performed jointly by the University of Arizona and the Homer City Owners. The study objective was to Predict more accurately the inseam sulfur values of the deposit for the purpose of future emission control. Based on initially available 112 DDH information, variogram models were developed for sulfur, ash, and thickness for the entire deposit. The deposit was then kriged using 333 m x 333 m panel size. Kriging produced better results than conventional isopachs. The estimation variance information obtainable from geostatistics was then used to improve development drilling activities that were underway. This effort was successful. Up-to-date experience on the use of conditional simulation of the deposit appears promising for future emission control strategy development

ONE of the postwar problems posed for mineral engineering educators is the desire of some mature student veterans to finish their college education under the G. I. Bill of Rights as quickly as possible, a desire that is quite understandable. Not only have they lost several years of education, which they wish to make up as quickly as possible, but many are married and have families and want to become productive as soon as possible in order to support their families properly. The obvious solution to this problem, if it really is serious, would appear to be a continuation of the wartime Accelerated Program, as it was carried on in most colleges and universities. As a matter of fact some schools are known to have continued their wartime programs in one or another form. To ascertain just what our mineral engineering schools generally are doing to meet this postwar problem, last April a questionnaire was sent to administrative officers at colleges and universities

"The building stone industry of Utah has developed slowly on account of the limited market offered. The state has large and varied deposits of granite, limestones, marble and onyx.Three cement companies manufacture Portland cement in the Salt Lake valley. Brick clay, fire clay and clay for sewer pipe is found in the vicinity of Salt Lake City and Ogden.Large deposits of gypsum have been found in several localities in Utah. The gypsum deposit near Nephi has been developed to be one of the most important plaster producers in the western country. This gypsum occurs in large quantities and is exceptionally pure.Oil and Oil ShaleVast deposits of rich oil shale occur in the Green River formation of the Tertiary rocks in the Uintah Basin, northeastern Utah. It is estimated by the United States Geological Survey that the basin contains at least 92,159,000,000 tons of shale which will yield as much as 15 gallons of oil to the ton when distilled. These shale deposits indicate that ultimately Utah will be one of the leading shale oil producing states of the country. Some development work and considerable experimental work has been done, but overproduction of petroleum and general low prices afforded little incentive to the oil-shale operator, consequently no commercial production has yet been established in Utah."

Growth directions of tin, zinc, and cadmiun whisker crystals grown spontaneously fi-om the solid are summarized. In tin the edge and diagonal directions of the unit cell are jound with the exception oj- the [110] diagonal. In cadmiurn and zinc the usual dip-ections are a or a + c. The c direction has not been ohserwed. The gvouth directions from the solid are for the most part the same as those found for vapor-grozun crystals and are the ohserz:ed glide directions in plastic j-lou. Whisker crystals of these elements grown from the solid are not twinned. Specular lateral reflections are associated with planes of snall crystallographic indices. WHISKER crystals of tin, zinc, or cadmium grow spontaneously at room temperature in periods from months to years from thin electroplates and other prepared films of the respective metals.''2 It has been established that these crystals are single, but the question of twinning, such as occurs in whisker crystals of silicon,3'4 has not been resolved. Studies of morphology have been restricted to determinations of growth directions.5-' Whisker crystals are both straight and kinked. A few studies have been made on kinked whiskers including measurements of kink anglesa and determinations of growth directions,' but unfortunately not both on the same crystals. The kink angles, for the most part, for each species are grouped closely about a few unique values, but these values are not always those between observed growth directions in a single crystal. To supplement existing data, the growth directions, identification of lateral features, and presence or absence of twinning were determined with a Weissenberg goniometer by a method described elsewhereg on eight whisker crystals of tin, five of zinc, and five of cadmium. One kinked cadmium whisker was examined in detail. The specimens were needlelike, a few microns in cross section, and of the order of a millimeter in length. They were removed from electroplated substrates on laboratory specimens and commercial equipment after several years of growth as described in Table I. Since the specimens were less than 10 p in cross section they were ideally strong with no attendant risk of plastic deformation or damage in handling. Only deformation twinning has been reported for these elements. Therefore, twinning probably should not be expected in whisker crystals of these metals, particularly a twin plane containing the growth direction. A twin plane oriented in this direction was the one sought in this study. No examination was made for twinning at the boundary between kink segments except for one cadmium crystal. Well-defined reflections occur as a whisker crystal of tin, zinc, or cadmium is rotated about its growth direction when illuminated by a beam of light Although these reflections had been noted in earlier investigations, no study of them was made, probably because the earlier studies had disclosed also that

The question, Who won the war?, has been the text for innumerable newspaper, and magazine articles, the answers running from "bread and butter" to "poison gas," in a material sense, and from the "Y. M. C. A." to the "boys in the front lines," humanly speaking. Personally, I think the margin by which success was secured was so narrow that none of the complex, interdependent factors could have been .spared, and that, as Admiral Sampson said after the battle of Santiago: "There is glory, enough for all." But if any one human factor can be said to have been absolutely indispensable, I think all will agree that it was the engineer. The engineer, as a rule, is a modest fellow, so modest in fact and so averse to publicity of any kind that, referring to him as a class, he was hardly occupying the place he should in public estimation before the war. By way of illustration, in the early history of a mine in Bisbee, the chief owner was also the proprietor of a saloon and spent most of his time there. When asked why he did not pay more attention to the mine, lie replied: "Oh! I can hire a boy to look after that; it takes a man to run this bar." Comparisons of the position and pay of engineers with other occupations are sometimes made to show that the engineer is not getting all that he should, considering the time of preparation and the qualifications required. Perhaps at least a part of the cause may be his aloofness from many of the practical affairs of everyday life. Whether he won the war or not, the part played by the engineer has certainly placed him on a sort of pedestal in the public estimation at present and it is very desirable to keep him there and maintain the position he has made for himself.
