C. W. MERRILL*—Mr. Hughes' paper not only is very well presented but is most timely in that it covers a subject of vital interest to the United States. Tin is one of the strategic metals which has not been found here in appreciable quantities. The total United States tin output since the first recorded production over 100 years ago would not supply current consumption for a fortnight. On the consumption side, tin is extremely important in national defense because of its use in tin plate which, in the form of tin cans, makes it possible to feed properly the armies that the United States recruits from its civilian population in emergencies. Moreover, the internal combustion engines so important in powering tanks, planes, and other war machines, require large quantities of tin alloys for bearings and for soldering. These considerations, along with the fact that Malaya, historically, has been the leading source of tin to the United States, make the kind of information that Mr. Hughes has presented so ably. a matter of vital interest. Your Chairman, Mr. Romanowitz, in his introduction, referred to the fact that I had been a member of the United States delegations to the three meetings of the International Tin Study Group. Some cominents on the Group's objectives and deliberations may be of interest. When it appeared that the International Tin Committee, the prewar producer's cartel, might soon revive its operations and extend its control agreement beyond the expiration date of Dec. 31, 1946, the United States Government became interested in some kind of an international trade organization concerned with tin which would give the consumers' interest equal representation with the producers' interests. An international meeting was called in London in October 1946 to consider this problem. K. F. Tromp (Kerkrade, Holland)—Your assumption that the Dutch State Mines have lead in the development of heavy medium processes—the Barvoys, Loess, Driessen—is not correct. The credit should be given to a Dutch engineer Mr. deVooys, the inventor of the Barvoys process. deVooys started in 1932 in Hiickelhoven, a German but Dutch-owned mine, where he was a director. Several plants on the Continent as well as in Great Britain were erected. The State Mines started their first plant in 1937. They could not get that plant working satisfactorily and built another one. Their process made no headway, and up to 1946 there was only one plant installed, the one at their own pit. Since 1946 they started the cyclone process and only since that time have they been more active, though industrial cyclone washeries are still in their infancy. deVooys sold his patents to the Dutch State Mines in 1946 and this might have given you the impression that the pioneer work had been done by the Dutch State Mines. In both the Flat River district of southeast Missouri and the Joplin district of southwest Missouri the lead concentrates are of very high grade, free of arsenic, antimony and bismuth, and contain no gold and very little silver. The general practice in both districts is to smelt the concentrates containing 70 to 85 per cent lead on Scotch hearths, to recover 70 to 85 per cent of the lead, and then smelt in a blast furnace the slag formed in the Scotch hearths to bring the total recovery of lead from lead concentrates to over 97.5 per cent. At the lead smelter of the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Herculaneum, Mo., no Scotch hearths are used. In the other smelters in the district the blast furnace plays a minor role to the Scotch hearth . The concentrates produced from the Flat River district are either table concentrates or flotation concentrates containing: Both types of concentrates are received at Herculaneum in box cars after being sampled. Great care is taken in weighing and sampling of cars of concentrates and in the determination of moisture and lead contents. The concentrates are unloaded into bins by an adaptation of scoop grain unloader. Four men unload and sweep a 40 to 45-ton box car of concentrates in 30 minutes. The same grade of concentrates is received each day and no metal-bearing fluxes are available. The problem is to get as high a recovery as possible as cheaply as possible from the high-grade lead concentrates produced by the company's concentrating mills. Sintering The bulk of the sulphur is removed from the concentrates and the fine concentrate particles are agglomerated by double roasting on typical Dwight and Lloyd sintering machines.

The axis of the middle portion of the Ural mountains is made up chiefly of highly compressed igneous and sedimentary schists, considered of Devonian age by the Russian geologists, with large areas of serpentine (peridotite originally) gabbro, etc,, intrusive in the schist series. In addition there are large areas of probably older granitic and gneissic rocks. The nickel deposits referred to in this paper are found in the Devonian schists and their associated igneous rocks. The gabbro-peridotite intrusions probably took place in late Devonian or early Permian time, inasmueh as the Permian and Carboniferous beds lie at gentle angles on the Devonian series on the west slope of the Urals. Perhaps the first attempt to work a nickel deposit in the Urals was made about 1866 in the Revdinsk district, which is situated southwest of Ekaterinburg. 3 was informed by a Russian that a wet method of extracting the nickel was tried but was not a commercial success. This deposit has been described by Muller,l Foullon, and Karpinski.3 Beck4 gives an abstract of these papers. ; Lying to the southeast of the Revdinsk district, the Sissert estate intervening, is the Verkhne-Ufalei district, which is traversed by the railroad from Ekaterinburg to Cheliabinsk, as shown on the map, Fig. 1, there being a station on this railroad at the iron-smelting town of Verkhne-Ufalci. About 7 versts (4.6 miles) north of this town is the Nijni-Karka-dinsk iron mine, which is a limonite deposit. In one of the shafts in this mine a serpentine rock showing a green mineral was encountered. A sample of this mineral collected in 1910 was tested by Mr. Wyatt, chief chemist of the Karabash laboratory of the Kyshtim Mining Works, and determined as nickel ore. The rapid improvement of the airborne scintillometer and the perfection of its efficiency for counting low energy gamma radiation has made it possible to work out a technique to map in great detail the radiation pattern at the earth's surface. On such maps low radiation over certain areas appears to indicate the existence of oil accumulations, forming a pattern similar to that obtained by the geochemists.

Abstract-Activated carbon is a strong adsorbent for amyl xanthate, capable of removing from solution up to a quarter of its own weight in xanthate. In selective flotation systems where depression is unstable, separation efficiency increases with activated carbon additions. The improvements observed are brought about by two mechanisms. First, by removing stripped and residual collector ions from solution, competition between depressant and xanthate is reduced and depression is stabilized. In addition, the texture of the froth phase at high pine oil concentrations is modified by activated carbon such that better drainage between the air bubbles takes place, alleviating the mechanical entrapment of depressed mineral particles. In treating a bulk copper/lead concentrate produced from GECO ore, selectively between galena and chalcopyrite is increased when activated carbon is used. Although the rate of flotation of galena is marginally lowered by activated carbon, a small extension in the duration of flotation allows the lead recovery to increase by 19% at the same recovery of copper. An addition rate of 0.75 kg/ton (1.5 lb/st) of bulk concentrate is suggested as optimum from this testwork. However, the actual level wed in the mill is dependent upon the residual concentrations of collector and frother in the bulk concentrate Pulp.

An investigation of trends in exploration expenditures for a selected group of mining companies was undertaken for the interval 1968-1971. These trends were compared with financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and the implications of these trends are indicated. The sample consists of 21 mining companies, of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the ex- traction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining, such as oil and gas sales. No companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in the sample. This definition held up in 1968, however, its strict application became more difficult through the years. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business and deriving a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining.

DuRing 1931 Peru lost its place as ninth among the oil-producing countries of the world, to Argentina, and even in tenth place its production only slightly exceeded that of Trinidad. The preliminary figures for 1932 indicate that Peru will lose tenth place for that year to Trinidad. The production in barrels of the three coastal fields of Peru during the past three years was as follows: In addition to this crude production, the International and Lobitos companies produced approximately 770,000 bbl. of casinghead gasoline during 1932. There was no outstanding development in the oil industry in Peru during 1932; activity in the fields was very much restricted due to curtailment of production and the low price of oil. The potential production of the property of the International Petroleum Co. Ltd. greatly exceeded the actual production. By the beginning of 1932, a total of 2348 productive wells had been drilled on the property of the International, of which 547 had been abandoned, leaving 1801 productive wells at that' date. These wells cover a total productive area of approximately 13,500 acres. The crude produced has an average gravity of 37° to 38° Be. The Lobitos crude is of approximately the same gravity. The earliest oil pool developed in the Peruvian Coastal area is now more than 40 years old and is still producing. The major development in the area took place between 1920 and 1930. Production at the present rate can be maintained for 10 years or more.

The honor so fairly earned and so incompletely and tardily paid to Henry Cort, the inventor of the puddling-furnace and the rolling-mill, has been fully set forth by Mr. Charles H. Morgan,' and needs no further emphasis here. In view of the importance of the rolling-mill in the treat ment of iron and steel, the paucity of information concerning it is surprising. With the exception of a book, written about 35 years ago, by Peter Ritter von Tunner, an Honorary Member of this Institute, and of desultory articles on simple sections, which have appeared in technical journals, I know of no publication attempting to treat this subject, although volumes have been written on the scientific theory and technical manipulations involved in other branches of the iron- and steel-industry. This strange anomaly may be due to the fact that roll-turning cannot be called a scientific business. It does not ordinarily come within the range of an educated engineer; yet it cannot be performed by an ordinary mechanic. There are a number of problems associated with underground coal mining, but the most serious and important are often related to the ground control. The influence of the prevailing geological conditions and features on the stability of underground mining has been outlined in this paper. Special emphasis has been given to the importance of geological techniques in the evaluation of coal mine roof conpetency prior to and during the mining operations. In addition to this, typi- cal ground control problems owing to the geological abnormalities have been depicted by appropriate case histories from coal seams in the State of Utah. The interdependence between longwall design and road- way stability on the one hand and geologic features on the other hand are shown in this study.

The Miller Number System is a well established method of measuring the relative abrasivity-friability of slurries, resulting in data that can be used in the selection of pump type and in forecasting wear-life of pumps and pipelines in slurry service. 1,2 Then after the pump type is selected, a Flow Analysis is determined by computer using pump design and operating parameters. This is used to determine pulsation control, suction requirements and stabilization, etc.

THIS paper gives a brief account of the geologic and production problems encountered in the Grass Creek oil field, the methods used in their solution, and the beneficial results obtained from the work. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance received from J. H. Pearson and Miss Ninettta A. Davis in the collection of the data and the preparation of the cross-sections. Permission for its publication was given by the officials of the Midwest Refining Co. and the Ohio Oil Co. The Grass Creek oil field is located in Ts. 98-99 W., R. 46 N., Hot Springs County, Wyo. The productive area includes about 2 1/2 mi. (4 km.) on the apex of a great anticlinal fold occupying more than 150 sq. mi. Fig. 1 shows the structural contours of the field. Oil was dicovered in the field in June, 1914; development proceeded rapidly and production rose to a maximum in 1918. The marketed production has been approximately as follows: BARRELS BARRELS 1915 94,073.5 1918 2,946,774.27 1916 1,404,183.97 1919 2,000,584.84 1917 2,780,697.51 1920 1,485,080.94 About 350 wells, 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) deep have been drilled to reach the upper oil sands; two companies, the Ohio Oil Co. and the Midwest Refining Co., operate the entire field.

Production of crude oil in the U.S.S.R. during 1940 is estimated at 222,600,000 bbl., as compared with the revised figure for the preceding year of 220,866,000 bbl., an increase of 0.79 per cent, and at least 20 per cent under the planned output. Baku district (Transcaucasus) remained the outstanding producing area, accounting for 72.33 per cent of the country's production, and this relative importance of the Apsheron Peninsula oil fields will probably continue lor many years to come. In the North Caucasus the Grozny-Dagestan area further extended its decline and the current production in this district amounts to only 6.06 Per cent Of the total U.S.S.R. output, as compared with 35.76 Per cent in 1931 The production of the Kuban-Maikop district remained virtually ullchanged from the preceding year, amounting to 7.64 per cent of the country's total. The Caucasian Province, therefore, in I940 produced 86.03 Per cent of the total production of the U.S.S.R. The promising new Permian Basin district, called Ural-Volga, and referred to sometimes as the "Second Baku," increased its production appreciably during 1940 and the output of that area amounted to 8.31 per cent of the country's total, as compared with 6.35 per cent during 1939. Production in the secondary districts of Russia continued unchanged though some new discoveries in the Emba salt-dome basin suggest that the output of that district may show some increase during the coming years. The drilling operations in Russia during 1940 reached a stage of virtual breakdown and the original footage plans were fulfilled only to the extent of around 50 per cent, while exploration drilling schedules were fulfilled only to the extent of about 25 to 35 per cent. This condition was due to the obvious lack of modern drilling rigs, of good drill pipe and of strong casing. Extended breakdowns occurred with deeper drilling, particularly because with few good drilling rigs available speed was being attempted with rotation rates that the inferior drill pipe and bits could not stand. Twistoffs and endless fishing jobs resulted. The difficulties became so serious a handicap to the Soviet oil industry that it was found imperative to order American drilling equipment and pipe in quantity, a policy that was never favored in the U.S.S.R because it requires expenditure of gold or exchange in major volume, and such exchange usually is reserved only to less bulky key items or to orders directly connected with armaments; also, oil-field machinery is very bulky and the prevailing lack of bottoms makes the transport of the indicated equipment a major problem. But little progress was similarly made in other branches of the Soviet oil industry. NO new major pipe-line construction work was undertaken, consequently the railroads continued to be overburdened with traffic that could be much more effectively handled by pipe lines. No new refinery construction of any magnitude was initiated, though several plants that had been in course of construction for several years were completed during 1940 and operation 554

The literature of geophysics as applied to the discovery of mineral deposits has been very extensive during the past few years,' but there seem to be few references to the use of the method of least squares for obtaining better interpretations of the observed data.2 There seems to be a general reluctance among geologists and engineers to acquire the technique of least squares, in spite of the fact that a thorough knowledge of the theory is not necessary for the use of the method.

THE binding of the boshes and in walls of blast furnaces has always been an expensive piece of work. When the old stone stack was replaced by the iron shell, the brickwork was kept at a thickness of five feet or more. These five-foot walls were still too thick, and the practice now is to have as thin walls as possible and to have a free circulation of air about the brickwork of the furnace. The "basket," or lattice-work binding, accomplishes this object, but it is expensive, as to first cost, and, if any change in the diameter of a furnace has to be made, it necessitates an alteration of the binding or of the thickness of the walls.

Recent tests conducted at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. examined some aspects of the value of a continuous measurement of particle size to the operation and control of a mill grinding circuit. Inspiration's control objectives and kinds of control systems developed in recent years to attain these objectives are outlined. A description is given of the arrangement of the test circuit at Inspiration and also of the systems used to measure particle size of the cyclone overflow product in these tests. Use of on-line size measurement for the analysis and improvement of grinding circuit performance is illustrated by relating how two important relationships were detected. Finally, the performance of a particle-size-based control system is described, including preliminary conclusions as to increased productivity.
