As we understand the functions of the A. I. M. E. Petroleum Division, they are to discover and promote knowledge for the benefit of society on the mining of oil and gas. To the individual member of the Petroleum Division, there are certain advantages of social and professional contacts, but the collective purpose is that described. And the individual is benefited by membership only as the Division measures up to the purposes of its existence. Consequently, the welfare of this Division and that of its members depends upon the extent to which it keeps pace with the needs of society on matters relating to the mining of oil and gas. To some extent, A. I. M. E. activities must be determined by the changing current needs of society. The great problem ahead of the world for some time is to evolve equitable types of production control in many industries, and especially is that true of the oil industry. Production control in this industry is as much an engineering function as is production development, notwithstanding it also involves the lawyer, the economist and the politician. It must be built on and around suitable engineering planning enforced by public opinion and legislation. We believe the prerequisite to any satisfactory solution of the oil industry's ills is an educational campaign establishing a better public understanding of the needs and merits of production control, by which we mean the maximum yield at the minimum cost coordinated to society's current needs. The underlying causes of the oil industry's ills are well known and generally agreed upon. In like manner there is general agreement among students of the industry that the first step toward their correction would be general adoption of oil-field developing and operating methods that would permit most efficient use of reservoir energy; that would provide for equitable distribution of oil and gas among the several owners in the pool; and also for the extraction of these products in response to market demand. It is now found, however, that general adoption of such developing and operating methods unfortunately cannot be brought about without changes being secured in certain basic laws of oil and gas, and perhaps also in the anti-trust laws. These legal changes are difficult to secure because of the widespread fear that they would tend to place the oil industry more exclusively in the hands of the major companies, and that

Exploration targets and results in the mining industry are commonly summarized in terms of tonnage and grade. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summary. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition, and development planning are presented in this paper.

Crude oil production in Iraq during 1932 was maintained at slightly higher levels than in 1931, but the output continued to be restricted to the requirements of local consumers. The Iraq Petroleum Co., representing British, American and French interests, which has been operating within its concession east of the Tigris River since 1926, began drilling operations on Apr. 5, 1927, and completed its first well at Baba Gurgur on Oct. 14, 1927, to which area the company has since confined its drilling activities. Relatively small quantities of oil have been produced annually, but the products have been utilized in company operations and have not been offered on the Iraq market. The Khanaqin Oil Co., which has its field of operation at Naft Khana in the so-called Transferred Territories, has been supplying the Iraq market with petroleum products from Iraq wells since March 12, 1927. The output of the Khanaqin Oil Co. refinery, at Alwand, during the past three fiscal years ending March 31, has been as follows: (In Barrels of 42 Gallons Each) 1930 1931 11931 Gasoline................................. 102,940 104,571 118,012 Kerosene................................ 104,010 108,112 111,624 Fuel oil...........................1 286,9001 332,142 354,244 503,850 544,825 583,880 The Iraq Petroleum Co. has a small topping plant, with a capacity of about 150 bbl. a day, used in the manufacture of petroleum products for the company's own needs. During the 1932 fiscal year, the production was 3918 bbl. of gasoline and 2235 bbl. of kerosene, as compared with 8157 bbl. of gasoline and 6308 bbl. of kerosene during the preceding fiscal year.

DEVELOPMENT of preferred orientation in uranium is of interest because of the strongly anisotropic properties of the orthorhombic crystal structure. Harris&apos; reported inverse pole figures for rolled uranium rods which showed <010> and <410>* to be parallel to the rolling direction after On 0.19-in. spherical X-ray diffraction specimens taken from the center of the middle section of each rod, pole distribution data were obtained by the spectrometric method described previously.4 The specimen was rotated rapidly about the axis coinciding with the rod axis in order that a large number of grains could be scanned and was rotated slowly about an axis perpendicular to the rod axis. The variation in the diffracted X-ray intensity was recorded as a function of the latter motion (angle 4). Fiber-axis distribution charts (inverse pole figures) were prepared by the method described by Setter, McHargue, and Williams." After having been corrected for background radiation, the pole distribution data (I vs ?) were normalized. A normalizing factor for each plane has been shown to be Iranaom = f I sin 4 ? 4 and was obtained by graphical integration from the data for that plane plotted as I sin ? vs ?. The axis-distribution charts deduced from the normalized pole densities are shown in Figs. 1 to 3. On these charts, the contours indicate angular positions of equal normalized axis density,

THE accompanying photograph: submitted by C. L. Bransford, assistant district manager of the Republic Steel Corp., in Birmingham. Ala., shows the remains of the old Tannehill blast furnaces, one of the first furnace plants in the South. They were built by Moses Stroup and operated during the Civil War period, when cannon balls were cast there. The record day&apos;s run of this furnace plant was said to be 30 tons of iron. The furnaces were fed by a water-wheel-operated bellows and used charcoal, a product of the neighboring forest. They were first owned and operated by the Pioneer Mining & Manufacturing Co., that later became the Republic Iron & Steel Cu., and subsequently the Republic Steel Corp. in that district.

Newell1 has shown that hydrogen is removed from steel in a vacuum at a temperature of 500° to 900° C. within 136 hr. Holm and Thompson2 also state that, especially when the hydrogen is high, the results obtained by extraction at 800°C. agree with those obtained by vacuum fusion. In this laboratory, an apparatus was designed (Oct. 1940) and used wherein the piece of steel was heated at 100°F. in a Torricellian vacuum (Fig. I). This vacuum was produced by raising and lowering a "leveling bottle or bulb" containing mercury. Extensive tests were made with this apparatus. The weakness of the procedure was the possibility of leakage of air into the tube around the rubber stopper at the bottom. The present plan is to raise and lower the mercury by applying vacuum from a mechanical pump, to the top of the tube and then to a bottle of mercury in which the bottom of the tube is immersed. The Apparatus The extraction is made in a Pyrex tube A, I in. i.d. It is drawn down at the top at N and an 8-mm. i.d. tube is welded on it. To this a Pyrex stopcock E, 4-mm. bore, is welded. The tube between N and E is preferably 8 in. long and is graduated in milliliters. The total length of A to the stopcock is 28 inches. Heat is supplied by a split-tube furnace. 0 in. long by 6 in. in diameter, hinged on the side. A short pyrometer couple P is inserted through the walls of the furnace. In use this is standardized by comparison with a standard couple in a I-in. tube, just opposite this short couple. In the I-in. tube A a glass rod R, flattened at one end, supports the sample S and the length of R is so adjusted that the sample is in proper place. (It may float in the mercury.) The tube A is inserted in a large rubber stopper to fit the bottle B and extends nearly to the bottom. It is so placed that the handle of the stopcock faces the operator. In this stopper also is a short tube D bent at right angles for the application of vacuum. Also in this stopper is an 8-mm. tube C reaching nearly to the bottom; this is bent so as to miss the heater and again bent to bring it in line with and as near as possible to the upper and reduced part of tube A. On this tube C is welded a 4-mm.-bore stopcock H. In order that the two tubes may be as near as possible, the handle of stopcock H faces the back, or is the reverse of stopcock E. The total height of II above the bottom is 28 in. As explained later, this is the pressure-measuring tube C. The bottle B is about half full of mercury. The mercury must cover the ends of A and C by about I in. when they are evacuated. By tees T and rubber tubing RT the tubes A, C and D, the latter through the three-way stopcock M, are connected to the vacuum pump. FoR a number of years an intensive study has been made to improve the blast-furnace practice at Copperhill not only as to cost% but to provide a good grade of gas for the acid plants. This study took us back to the fundamentals of successful pyrite smelting; namely, a blast furnace working on a clean sulfide ore, free from fines, and the use of quartz high in silica as a flux. In 1919, the quality of the flux was improved and its effect on the metallurgy was very marked. To improve the practice further, it was necessary to work out some method of treatment for the sulfide fines and the siliceous and refractory ores, other than in the blast furnace. A series of milling tests indicated that these products could be successfully treated by differential flotation, and in 1922 plans were made and a flotation plant built. It was estimated that the flotation plant would deliver to the smelter 40 to 50 tons of concentrates per day; the problem was what to do with these concentrates. It was out of the question to attempt to smelt them in a blast furnace because of the dust losses and because our practice demands a charge free from fines for satisfactory operation. There is no custom smelter in the vicinity to which concentrates may be sold, pending the time when the tonnage will be sufficient to warrant roasters and a reverbatory furnace. Sintering and nodulizing were investigated but neither method fitted into our scheme of metallurgy. A close study of the converter practice was then made to see if some method could not be evolved to smelt this tonnage of concentrates in a converter without preliminary treatment. At that time, the converter installation consisted of two 12-ft. Great Falls converters, which were handling 12 to 14 per cent. matte. The heat balance of the converters working with 12 to 14 per cent. matte was more than sufficient to smelt the contemplated tonnage of concentrates but the mechanical difficulties of feeding fines into the Great Falls converter made the use of this type of converter impractical. According to Vorwärts, the German Mining Commission sent to ascertain the damage done to the mines of France says that the work of restoring these mines will furnish work for all the unemployed in Germany for the next 8 years. The commission said the work of reconstruction would have to be clone from. "the ground up," especially in the Departments of Pas de Calias, Courriere, Lens, Lievin, Drocourt, Mourchin, Carvin, and Dourgas, where the destruction was pronounced "terrible." Most of the mines have been "drowned," and in rebuilding new shafts would have to be protected against the inward pressure of water. The Germans declared the work of restoration would not only be one of great difficulty, but that in many cases it was impossible to ascertain the extent of the damage clone to each mine. They also said it was not easy to fix responsibility for the destruction because it was done by nu-merous groups of troops and the records showing where each military unit was located and at what period were not complete or available.

In my paper on the estimation of manganese, etc., presented at the Halifax meeting, in September, 1885 (Transactions, xiv., 372), I said that the colorimetric process "can never be made to give reliable results." This statement was based on the results of many trials made by my assistant, Mr. E. D. Campbell, and myself, following in our work the printed and oral directions of others, and such modifications as suggested themselves from time to time. The accuracy of the statement having been questioned, I have, since then, endeavored to find some method of conducting the operation which would give accurate results; I have also tried the methods used by five different chemists; and I am not able to bring the process within the limits of an exact method. While it can fairly be ranked with the colorimetric carbon-process, and can be used for checking the operations of a steel plant, yet it requires more care to obtain uniform results, and is liable to greater variations from slight causes than the carbon-process, and, in my judgment, is not a safe method to employ when exact results are sought.

Quietly picking his way through the thorny thicket of conservation issues is William E. Ruckelshaus, director of the Environmental Protection Agency in which President Nixon gathered the various anti- pollution units from the Interior, Commerce. Agriculture and Health. Education and Welfare departments. Mr. Ruckelshaus. EPA&apos;s first administrator, moved over from being Assistant Attorney General in charge of the civil division at Justice to this new post. Essentially, EPA is charged with administering swiftly proliferating antipollution programs. This means policing industry cities, farms and everything else. Ruckelshaus has been quietly fitting together the various pieces of this new agency, pulling then1 out of other Federal departments. Some 5800 employees are involved. The budget in 1971 for these segments will total about $1.5 billion.

Peter Joralemon&apos;s contention that Nevada contains one of the world&apos;s major gold belts is the result of 30 years&apos; active involvement with the state&apos;s regional geology. He first suggested the possibility of an arsenical gold belt-tenuously based on two replacement deposits 480 km (300 miles) apart-in his 1949 doctoral thesis of the Getchell mine. In the years that followed, some 18 or 20 arsenical gold ore bodies have been discovered along the lineament Joralemon postulated. In this article, he uses the evidence that he&apos;s collected over the last three decades to refine his 1949 thesis. Joralemon&apos;s conclusion: A mineral belt containing a billion dollars worth of gold extends the length of Nevada, and a number of ore bodies are yet to be discovered.

THE development in the Gulf Coastal Plain for the year 1923 was entirely devoid of any spectacular feature and was considerably less than that of 1922. No large fields were discovered and the principal advances lay in the extension of the old fields and the finding of a new dome and other possible producing structures, which, however, so far, have given only small wells. While the production of some fields, such as those at Hull and Orange, was materially increased at times by comparatively large wells, the output as a whole shows a marked decrease over that of the preceding year. MOST underground mining operations are dependent on pumping installations to keep the mine unwatered. The reliability of such installations is obviously of paramount importance. The volume of water to be handled is often considerable, and the total head is relatively high. In these cases, both capital cost and operating expense of the pumping installations will become significant factors in overall mining costs. To insure reliability and to keep efficiencies, and hence operating cosl;s, within acceptable limits it goes without saying that mechanical maintenance of a mine pumping installation must receive scrupulous attention at all times. Large mine pumping installations today almost invariably use multistage centrifugal pumps, since positive-displacement units would not be economically competitive except under very unusual conditions of small volume combined with extremely high heads. Centrifugal pump maintenance, under ideal circumstances, would be confined to parts subject to normal running water, i.e., bearing surfaces, stuffing box packing, and shaft sleeves. Under adverse conditions, however, metal may be lost from the wetted surfaces of a pump by erosive or corrosive action of the pumped fluid, and maintenance costs can easily attain enormous proportions. The following definitions are those most generally used for the phenomena encountered. Erosion is a general term meaning mechanical removal of material from a surface. As applied to pumps, it may be the result of simple abrasion, such as that produced by suspended solid matter in the liquid being pumped. In common with other hy-

During the year 1936, a new high record was established for Peruvian production, the total amounting to 17,594,689 bbl., which brought the cumulative production of the country up to 205 million barrels. The 1936 figure represents an increase of 530,288 bbl. over that of 1935. The property of the International Petroleum Co. contributed 369,577 bbl. of this increase and the Lobitos property 158,233. Exploration work in the country was continued. The Selden Breck Co. examined a strip of the National Reserve in eastern Peru from Tambo del Sur to the Rio Pachitea. This company was granted a concession for a term of four years embracing approximately 50,000 acres near the confluence of the Rio Pachitea and the Rio Ucayali. During the year, the Peruvian Government commenced drilling a well on one of the reserved zones at Zorritos. At the end of the year, this well had reached a depth of 1300 feet. La Rrea-Parinas Estate.—Production on the La Brea-Parinas Estate of the International Petroleum Company, Ltd., reached an all-time high in 1936 of 15,126,491 bbl., an increase of 369,577 bbl. over the 1935 record. The total production from 1890 to 1936 was 163,668,014 barrels.

The author addressed a keynote session for all divisions at last October&apos;s SME Fall Meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. Discussing the competition from gas, oil, hydroelectric and atomic energy, he said that the market can only be wrested from them "by endeavoring to lower costs far beyond anything we thought possible a few years ago." He saw the rate of return for the industry as "grossly inadequate." Looking ahead, Mr. Lamm saw only a few extremely large generating plants being built. "Purchase of coal for such plants," he said, "will probably be confined to a single source on long-term contracts. Only those coal companies who are able to locate huge reserves, close to adequate cooling water, capable of being mined and transported at the lowest cost in relation to quality, will be able to compete. . . While the market for coal will be very large in terms of tons, it will be most selective and confined to a few transactions of very great magnitude. "Coal offers a proven and tried method of producing energy. The available strippable reserves of Western coal and mineable underground reserves offer the cheapest source of energy available. History will attest that coal has been a steady and stable source of energy. Up until recently, the energy market of the West has had to depend on natural gas which product has had a long and steady price escalation. Statistics show that, where coal is available, the price of gas is quite stable, but where gas is the only available fuel, it has traditionally followed a steady and upward price trend.
