The El Teniente mine produces more than 340 000 tonnes of fine copper per year from an industrial complex of underground mine, concentrator and smelter. Mass caving methods are employed to deliver approximately 95 000 tpd of ore to the mill, from a number of sectors underground, each sector being in effect a large-scale mine in its own right. This mining activity has faced challenges over the course of the last century such as:the capacity of the underground mine has been expanded to maintain and increase output of fine copper; the increasing size of the ore fragmentation forced to change the mining method to achieve the high productivity and profitability required in the business; and to modify the mining methods to continue mining at depth with safety. Fundamental activities in these mining methods, for the successful initiation of caving and subsequent draw, are:undercutting the base of the block or panel by blasting; and excavating of drawbells. The undercutting design evolves mainly on the height of the blasting to manage the change on ore fragmentation. The methodology move away from incorporating massive areas, typical of the block caving method, to a continuos blasting, typical of the panel caving method. Drawbell design changes on geometry, dimensions and sequence of excavation to deal with a corse ore fragmentation and the resolution of mining difficulties in the form of major rock bursts and collapses of production facilities. This paper focuses upon the evolution of the undercutting and drawbell design used at El Teniente mine and techniques under consideration to deal with future caving operations to provide the bulk of the daily production for the foreseeable future.

Ground support installation into the face of development headings has become an accepted practice at many Australian hard rock mines. Ground support is installed in the development face to reduce personnel exposure to rockfall while conducting work tasks such as marking up, installing lifter tubes, charging, and face sampling. The ground support system installed in the face is typically friction bolts and mesh. This support system can be effective at reducing rockfall occurrence, but it also increases the cost of development per metre, in terms of capital for the ground support, jumbo and operator capital allocation and the installation time slowing each drill and blast cycle. Other issues associated with meshing and bolting the development face include management of rock bolts and mesh sheets in the fired dirt of every cut, damage to services such as vent duct, geometry issues when installing ground support onto irregular development profiles and operator error. Fibrecrete installation onto the development face for support is an option considered by many mines, but it can be difficult to manage due to the removal of visual indications of misfires and slowing the mining cycle due to the wait time for fibrecrete curing. The use of Thin Spray Liner (TSL) products in underground hard rock mines has been relatively infrequent in the past, mainly due to issues with cost, health and safety, and liner strength. Kanmantoo Mine investigated the use of TSLs for the purpose of development face support, while collecting data on the costs and practicalities associated with their use. Several TSL products were trialled and a preferred TSL product was selected for use as face support. Cost savings, drill and blast cycle timing improvements and other benefits were achieved while meeting the requirement to reduce rockfall risk.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the efficiency of machine-mounted active explosion suppression systems (AESS). Their proven effectiveness against methane explosions is highlighted, as well as their additional potential when used as an early warning system should frictional sparks occur during the coal-cutting operation at the coalface.Methane and coal dust explosions remain one of the primary and unpredictable risks in underground coal mining. Although technologies such as proactive ventilation, methane monitoring and wet-head cutting systems are widely used as preventative measures, there are no fail-safe controls able to reduce the risk to zero. None of these controls is designed to be able to counter the negligence associated with human error or to deal with rapidly changing face conditions which could lead to flammable gas ignitions. Machine-mounted AESS have been installed on various continuous miners as an additional control to further reduce the risk of ignitions and to act as a safety shield when all the other precautions taken have failed. This was the primary motive for the development of AESS. As an additional feature, the ExploSpot® AESS is being enhanced to identify frictional ignition sources at the coalface that reach a predefined monitoring level. This functionality may serve as a further effective preventative measure.As part of ensuring coalmine operational safety, the detection of frictional ignitions can play a huge role in creating heightened awareness of potentially dangerous situations. By being able to process the frictional spark burning pattern, the AESS could support the decision-making process regarding whether to continue the coal-cutting operation, whether there is a need for maintenance or whether the operation should be stopped completely due to the increased risk of a flammable gas ignition and an ensuing explosion.CITATION:Spaeth, A and du Plessis, J J L, 2015. Daunia and Caval Ridge coal mines, owned and operated by BHP, have been co-disposing rejects and dewatered tailings within spoil dumps from the beginning of their operations in 2013 and 2014, with the purpose of minimising environmental impact and geotechnical risk. Following the recent large failures of tailings dams around the world, BHP Coal, through its Coal Tailings Program, plans to transition other coal mines to deliver “dry” tailings and produce mixed plant rejects (MPR) for inpit co-disposal. This will materially reduce future tailings dam risk exposure. Previous laboratory shear strength testing was conducted on rejects with a maximum particles size of 20 mm, and some concerns were raised that this might not represent the mechanical properties of the actual full particle size distribution (PSD) rejects. BHP was also aware that using different technologies to dewater the tailings, such as belt press filters (BPF) and solid bowl centrifuge (SBC), could produce thickened tailings which could significantly modify the physical behaviours of the MPRs, particularly the bonding between particles. Therefore, laboratory testing on both coarse rejects and mixtures of the coarse rejects and dewatered tailings (MPRs), with full PSDs, was carried out. Testing was performed using the large direct shear machine developed by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C20019 in 2017, as well as a 300 mm diameter triaxial apparatus at the University of Newcastle (UoN). This paper presents details of the laboratory testing program and results for the rejects from the first studied mine of the BHP Coal Tailings Program. It compares the shear strengths measured at full scale with those tested on modified (scalped or crushed) specimens in the past; and discusses the tailings dewatering technique selection from geotechnical aspects based on the testing results, and finally presents some dump and tip head stability analysis results using the testing results.

Circuits with unconventional and potentially more complex designs are predicted to become more common in the future as plant designers and operators look to process ores more efficiently. Ideas have been presented on how circuit design may be changed to utilise todayÆs technology to address tomorrowÆs challenges (Powell and Bye, 2009; Powell, Benzer and Mainza, 2011a). High pressure grinding roll (HPGR) installations in various configurations; application of preconcentration plants eg sorting, magnetic or gravity separation; and preweakening devices eg microwave processing; are all examples of technologies having the potential to deliver a significant reduction in comminution energy for ores amenable to these processes. Not only will future novel circuits contain equipment for which models are not as well developed (if at all), many will likely require the ability to respond to variations in feed, and interact with geometallurgical models requiring process adjustments when the ore characteristics change.In order to confidently simulate more complex circuits and accommodate variations in feed type, a significant advancement in modelling and simulation capability is required. This includes dealing with multiple components in the feed, accommodating different competencies of ore, utilising physical separation opportunities and tracking the grade reporting along the different potential processing routes. Developing the means to simulate complex circuits has been a key priority of a collaborative group of comminution researchers working to solve these challenges.Simulations are presented utilising a new configurable simulation interface called the model developers kit (MDK). The MDK is designed to accommodate multi-components and incorporate new models under development. Drilling and sampling are responsible for most of the costs during mineral exploration, especially in multi-elements and polymetallic deposits, such as iron, manganese and bauxite deposits. On these deposits, often it is necessary to estimate multiple attributes at several granulometric fractions, ie distinct particle sizes. This paper investigates the effect of sampling at a close spacing grid only the head grades for the multiple chemical species in iron ore deposits. The remaining required data at the various grain sizes are sampled at a sparse grid. The derived geological model is checked for precision and accuracy comparing the output obtained against a model obtained using a complete isotopic data set including head grades and chemical analysis at each granulometric fraction analysed at all sampled positions. Among the several tested alternatives, the best procedure for dealing with the posed problem involved utilising the correlation coefficients between the grades at distinct fractions to obtain an isotopic database prior to interpolation. Cokriging was the method used, based on the intrinsic coregionalisation model. Estimates were obtained with the quality needed for the proposal of the study. Results showed that at least 50 per cent of the blocks were estimated with errors less than ten per cent relative to the grades obtained at the reference model, using only 15 per cent of the granulochemical data employed to obtain the reference model. The methodology also preserved the correlations between the attributes in their several granulometric fractions on the estimated model.

The concept of æsustainabilityÆ can largely be defined as development that will not compromise the ælivabilityÆ of the planet for future generations. It has multiple dimensions, such as the triple bottom line û environmental, economic and social. And it also includes temporal (now and the future) and spatial (local and global) aspects that have to be taken into consideration to achieve true sustainability.Energy sustainability might be defined as û having the light turn on when you push the switch. It has, of course many more dimensions than this simplistic definition. Coal in Australia has an important role in keeping our lights on, but has its problems that need to be tackled head on to maintain a role in sustainable development.An overriding issue in terms of sustainability for coal is its major contribution to our greenhouse gas emissions. Whilst we have one of the most effective energy sectors in the developed world, based on well-managed, abundant fossil fuels, our greenhouse gas emissions are one of the highest per GDP in the developed world. We have to reduce our ægreenhouse gas signatureÆ.This paper explores the issues of coal utilisation greenhouse gas emissions as an indicator of the fuelÆs sustainability and the potential lower emissions pathways we will have to follow in a future carbon-constrained world.The technology changes will have significant implications for the minerals industry and it is argued that forward-looking coal/greenhouse emissions strategies need to be developed in alliance with the coal (and energy) sector for the minerals industry to maintain its global competitiveness.

The Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) in Queensland, Australia is a Sub-level Caving operation that started production below the previously mined open pit at a depth of 535m. Current Production mining has progressed to a depth of 730m, with planned production mining to extend down to at least 1000m below surface. The inclined nature and geometry of the orebody combined with geological structures provides for challenging mining conditions. Over several years, Ernest Henry Mine has introduced measures to improve outcomes based on observations, monitoring and data analysis. As mining progresses deeper, EHM will continue to proactively take steps to ensure future outcomes are anticipated and mining can continue safely and uninterrupted. The focus of this paper is on the changes in seismic- and stress-driven behaviour of the rockmass experienced at EHM, the ground control measures implemented, and the anticipated future conditions and controls required. This paper aims at presenting the results of laboratory, pilot plant and simulation studies for the design of the grinding circuit for the beneficiation of compact itabirites from the Conceitpo mine. Two alternatives were investigated, both utilising the current crushing circuit up to tertiary crushing. Under alternative #1, quaternary crushing was considered to produce the feed of the ball mill; under alternative #2, high pressure grinding rolls were selected to prepare the ball mill circuit feed. Pilot scale studies pointed towards the use of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The circuit design was based on a throughput of 720 t/h, representing a nominal solids flow rate of 600 t/h, considering a design factor of 1.2, and P80 of 95 ¦m.

The Northparkes E26 Mine is AustraliaÆs first block cave mine. This paper presents an outline of the design and construction philosophies that drove the project development and details the excavation, ground support and construction methods used. Features of the block caving method at Northparkes include:high production rates from multiple drawpoints;hard blocky ore fractured along gypsum veins; andloading/unloading of openings due to mining induced stresses.The drawpoints are subjected to high abrasion from the flow of ore, as well as impact from both secondary blasting and from the production LHDs. In order to withstand these harsh conditions and to ensure a low maintenance environment, a conservative approach to ground support was taken. The experiences gained during construction are discussed and whether the design expectations have been achieved. By installing a high level of ground support during excavation of the openings subject to mining stresses, a low maintenance environment has been constructed. Operating costs are therefore minimised and Northparkes E26 Mine continues to produce at the lowest cost per tonne of all Australian underground mines.

Many persons hold the opinion that the metal indus- ries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requir- ing not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. So wrote Georgius Agricola in 1556. He could have been espousing the sentiments of an indus- trial archaeologist investigating mining sites in 1986. South Australia has a very rich legacy from its industrial past-especially in the area of its mining history. Industrial archaeology, which is part of the broad field of archaeology, is concerned with the material and documentary remains of this industrial past. This includes the products and processes of manufacturing, industrial, technolog- ical and engineering activity and their relation- ships to people and the environment. `Archaeology' immediately conjures up the image of excavations in Greece or Eygpt. Excavation however is only a part of archaeological methodology. Industrial archaeology utilizes documentary historical rec- ords combined with field survey techniques (both above and below ground) to create a composite picture of the past. Interest in our recent past has burgeoned in Australia in the last few years. This interest manifests itself in many ways-the unprecedented popularity of Australiana and col- lecting, the plethora of Australian historic films, the growth of the National Trust, local historical societies and genealogical research. Fortunately these trends have been reflected in academic and legislative circles. Various univers- ities, institutes of technology and colleges of advanced education run courses in aspects of cul- tural resource management and conservation of the historic environment. These courses are com- prised of archaeology, architecture, geography, his- tory, materials conservation, museum studies, and national parks management and planning.

The Yallourn Mine (YM) commenced mining of brown coal in the 1920s under operation by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), prior to it becoming privatised in 1996. The present owners of the YM, Energy Australia Yallourn (EAY), acquired the site in 2000 and intend to continue operations until scheduled closure in 2028. Brown coal extracted from the YM is fed into the Yallourn Power Station which supplies approximately 22 per cent of Victoria’s electricity. Water within the YM is collected and stored in the Township Field Fire Service Pond. Water levels within the Fire Service Pond (FSP) may fluctuate considerably depending on the requirement for storage at the site. With due consideration to the stability performance of mine batters adjoining the FSP, the authors performed slope stability assessments to evaluate the risk and consequence of batter instability during the potential pond filling as it approaches the ‘critical pool’. The critical pond is defined as the level at which the driving forces (destabilising forces) are at their greatest and the resisting forces (lake forces, friction) are at their lowest. This assessment was undertaken using the Mine Geotechnical Risk Index (MGRI) approach.

Simulation modelling is a practice commonly used in the mining industry to evaluate alternative process designs. Such modelling is typically undertaken as an optimisation study to increase the efficiencies, productivity and product quality of operating mines. In this situation, real short-term grade variability data of extracted ore are available from production records as input data into the simulation.There is also a need for simulation modelling to be performed before mines are approved for construction to clarify the grade variability characteristics that can be expected from the operating mine and assist in the optimisation of the process design. In this situation no historical short-term grade variability data are available. To achieve meaningful and reliable results from a simulation it is necessary to have input data for the ore to be extracted from the pits, representative of the short-term grade variability that would be expected for the operating mine.This paper describes an example of a path taken to generate realistic input data.A method described as composite cut-off criterion was used to distinguish ore from waste, which gave substantially greater recovered tonnage at target grade compared to the conventional quadrant cut-off grade criteria.The only data available for the project was resource model data in the form of kriged block models, which are known to underestimate true ore grade variability. To achieve realistic results from the simulation it was essential to increase this variability while maintaining the accurate average grades. Areas of certain deposits that were modelled using both kriging and conditional simulation estimation techniques were quantitatively compared to establish the comparative variance and the kriged data was modified to match the conditionally simulated variance.A realistic mining model was generated via a process of discretisation and regularisation of the resource blocks. Quantitative assessment demonstrated that this method adequately compensated for ore dilution and that adjustment for ore loss was not required due to an ore skin surrounding the edge blocks.The conditioned data was then used to generate a schedule of daily mine extraction, considering grade variability, tonnage, equipment constraints and extensive blended-in-blended-out precrusher stockpiles to feed into the process design simulations.For the precrusher stockpiles a number of alternative allocation criteria were examined for ore being extracted from the pits to identify the best method in achieving reduced variability through the daily scheduling system. The study concluded that a single analyte separation criterion produced acceptable variability with minimal complexity.The blending efficiency of manually stacked and reclaimed precrusher stockpiles was studied to determine a realistic blending efficiency within the pile. A recommended method of building and reclaiming was determined to give maximum blending efficiency.Finally, the data was used as input into process design simulation models; simulation from crusher feed to shiploading demonstrating that control of shipment grade variability was achievable and that the conditioning of the data delivered realistic results.CITATION:Jupp, K, Howard, T J and Everett, J E, 2013. Philsaga Mining Corporation (Philsaga) had three main aims in converting their lining system from steel to metal cap. They wanted to increase mill availability, minimise localised high wear and optimise particle breakage to deliver increased efficiency within the milling circuit. Combining Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling and empirical interpretation of liner wear resulted in a rigorous approach to understanding the impact of mill liners on overall mill performance. This new understanding was subsequently used to not only derive a new lining design to optimise performance and thereby improve overall plant economics, but also to guide further lining development.In this work, detailed DEM modelling, developed from actual plant data, together with optimising liner design for wear paved the way towards the installation of a Metal Cap lining system at Philsaga’s Ø6100 mm SAG Mill. The results were a reported increase in SAG mill throughput of 16 – 20 per cent due to improved breakage through more efficient use of installed power, a reduction in localised high liner wear with overall increase in liner life and reduction in liner replacement time. Site also reported an increased gold recovery of 2 per cent which the improved breakage might have contributed to. This paper will present the design challenges and compare the Metal Cap lining systems performance against Steel lining system. Traditionally, comminution and flotation have been surveyed, analysed and optimised separately. This often results in less than optimal outcomes because of the complex interactions between the two processes. Flotation recovery is a strong function of the valuable mineral particle size distribution with lower recovery of ultra-fines due to poor flotation kinetics, optimum recovery for the intermediate sized particles and lower recovery for the coarser particles due to poorer liberation. Thus, to optimise flotation recovery and grade it is usually best to grind to a fine size. This requirement needs to be balanced by the cost of grinding finer and the revenue that results from an increase in grinding throughput, which often results in a coarsening of the flotation feed.This paper demonstrates a technique which can be used to predict the effect of a change in feed grind size on flotation performance. It can be used to determine the optimum grind size for a particular operation which optimises total circuit profitability. Analysis is relatively easy to perform, as a minimum, requiring only size by assay data of the feed and product streams of the process. Case studies will be presented that demonstrate the usefulness of this technique in feed grind applications. Potential use of the technique for regrind evaluation is discussed. The operations and project environments are very different, but overlap in many areas. The development of mineral processing projects is goal oriented, is schedule focused and is a contractual environment. The operating environment for a mineral processing plant is oriented around longer-term commitments, focused on delivery against budget expectations, and an environment heavily influenced by long-term personal relationships, community relationships, and people issues.Further contrast is evident in the way expenditure is managed. Projects commit large amounts of money quickly to meet schedule-based objectives. Operations manage expenditure to minimise operating costs and are able to, or are forced to delay decisions on large expenditures. However, these two environments need to come together in many ways, ranging from greenfields plant handover to a new operations and maintenance crew, to day to day interaction and management of brownfields projects, often in close proximity.This paper considers the different perspectives people bring to projects and early operations, including the advantages and disadvantages of æoperationsÆ input to a project and models for managing value adding during project development, implementation and debottlenecking.CITATION:Lane, G and Clements, B, 2012. Located 350 km west of Sydney and 20 km outside Orange, NSW, lies the Ridgeway Gold Mine û NewcrestÆs flagship Underground Gold Mine. Key to success at Ridgeway has been the fast tracked development of the 3.8 km, 1 in 5.3 conveyor decline which houses the 850 t/hr conveying system feeding the dedicated Ridgeway Concentrator, built adjacent to the existing Cadia Hill Concentrator. Eroc was contracted to develop the steep conveyor decline, drawing on its personnel and experience from past metalliferous, tunnelling and coal mining projects to complete the ambitious schedule within 12 months. This paper deals with the complexities and experiences in safely delivering what is understood to be one of AustraliaÆs steepest declines of any substantial length in a metalliferous mine.

Mineral resource and ore reserve estimates are founded on two sources of data: tonnage and grade. The tonnage is a product of volume and density; both of which are estimates. Density impacts numerous operational factors, which include, but are not limited to, mine design, mine planning, equipment selection and operational performance. Hence, density is a significant parameter and its determination requires similar care as the measurement of grade. Selecting an appropriate method to determine density, and ensuring its rigorous application, thus reduces risk and can improve operational performance, which in turn increases profit margin.Different Anglo American sites use a variety of practices and protocols to determine density, which is highly dependent on the physical characteristics of the orebody, local conditions and historical practices. Also, individual sites sometimes execute the same method in a slightly different way, which may also affect the outcome of the measurements. In order to gain a better understanding of how density is determined at Anglo American projects and operations, a review of these techniques was undertaken. The objective of the study was to identify and share good practices across the company, as well as to look for improvement opportunities, where applicable. Ten different methods of measuring density, applied to nine different commodities, were identified and described. An additional technique was recently developed by Anglo American Technical Solutions. The core pycnometer is a large gas displacement pycnometer capable of measuring density at high accuracy on full pieces of intact core.This paper provides an overview of methods used to determine density within the Anglo American Group, including quality control and quality assurance aspects. It is not the purpose of this paper to identify a preferred method, but to highlight the importance of choosing the best suited practice for a project or mine site. In addition, a case study comparing two different density determination methods applied to the same rock samples from the Los Bronces Copper mine was undertaken and the results of that study are presented here.Selecting the most appropriate method to determine density and comparing results from two or more techniques against each other, together with other suitable quality control procedures, is considered to be of utmost importance for all mining operations and exploration projects.CITATION:Makhuvha, M, Arellano, R M and Harney, D M W, 2014. Iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) systems of the Carajás mineral province (Amazon craton, Brazil) are structurally controlled by regional-scale shear zones and have formed by multiple episodes of fluid circulation and hydrothermal alteration in the Neoarchean (2.71–2.68 Ga and 2.56 Ga) and Palaeoproterozoic (1.90–1.87 Ga).Collectively, fluid inclusion, boron, oxygen and hydrogen isotope data and Cl/Br–Na/Cl ratios in fluid inclusions reveal that regional circulation of non-magmatic brines (eg evaporative fluids/evolved sea water) and mixing with other fluid sources (eg meteoric or magmatic) is an important attribute in the genesis of the Carajás IOCG systems. The ?33S and d34S compositions of sulfides from the Neoarchean and Palaeoproterozoic IOCG systems suggest that the ore-bearing fluids have assimilated sulfur from crustal reservoirs. Mr. P. F. THOMPSON said this matter was one of very great importance to producers of lead. His association with the matter was that he happened to be the Institute representative on the Committee of the Standards Association of Australia charged with formulating a standard for chemical lead, that is, lead used in technical chemistry for acid chambers and the like. The British standard had this test incorporated in it, but those on the committee felt that it should not be included in the specification. The main objection was that in an accelerated corrosion test one was endeavouring to do in a few seconds what in natural conditions would take years; and it was now being recognised that such tests were of little value in assessing the corrosive properties of a metal.The flash point test was carried out with boiling hot strong sulphuric acid; but no chemical manufacturer would be likely to use such in contact with lead. There were many factors such as the formation of steam, the chemical reduction of sulphuric acid, the evolution of hydrogen, the catalytic effect of the surface lead, affecting this test, other than the presence of the segregated impurities upon which this test throws the onus of the whole imperfection of the lead. Mr. Russell had shown that lead which had stood the test of time often gave a low flash point. They were endeavouring to find rapid methods of estimating minute amounts of the more important impurities, which would eliminate the labour and expense of a full analysis.Mr. H. St. J.
