The Grasberg Mine is a copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and located in the high equatorial mountains of the Indonesian province of Papua. The climate is alpine/subalpine with little seasonal variation in temperature or rainfall. The daily average temperature ranges from about 2¦C to 14¦C and the annual rainfall in the vicinity of the mine and overburden stockpiles is about 4000 mm to 5000 mm. Mining of the Grasberg open pit will continue until 2014 at which time approximately 2750 Mt of overburden will have been produced. Current overburden production rates are 200 Mt per annum. The current mill rate is 230 000 t/day from the Grasberg pit (190 000 t/day) and the underground operations (40 000 t/day). The acid rock drainage (ARD) issues associated with overburden from the Grasberg operations were identified early in the mining operation. Almost all overburden placed to date has been Potentially Acid Forming (PAF). Laboratory testing has identified four main overburden types: limestone and non-acid forming (Green waste), PAF low capacity (Blue waste) and PAF high capacity (Red waste), and Heavy Sulfide Zone (HSZ), which contains greater than 20 per cent pyrite. Waste type block modelling indicates that at least 30 per cent of the overburden production from 2003 to the end of Grasberg pit operations will be limestone. Strategies are being developed to maximise the beneficial use of limestone through strategic blending and placement for ARD mitigation and control.

Ion exchange using strong base resins is a well established technology for the recovery and purification of uranium from sulfuric acid leach liquors. Production of uranium at the Beverley Mine in South Australia includes acidic in situ leaching, ion exchange and uranium precipitation. The salinity present in the groundwater results in a relatively high concentration of chloride in the leach liquor reporting to the ion exchange plant. The impact of chloride on the ion exchange process is discussed in this paper. The results presented show that an increased chloride concentration in the lixiviant solution feeding the ion exchange plant leads to increased uptake of chloride by the resin during the loading cycle. At the highest chloride concentration studied (7.5 g/L Cl) chloride took up to 60 per cent of the resin loading sites. The impact of the chloride can be summarised as follows: for a given uranium concentration in the lixiviant feed solution, the uranium loading decreased with increasing chloride concentration; a consequence of decreased uranium loading is an increase in the frequency of elution, with an associated increase in elution reagent costs; and for a given elution efficiency, the uranium concentration in the barrens is expected to increase with increasing chloride concentration.A few options were examined to counteract the impact of chloride: an increase in elution efficiency was targeted to reduce the amount of uranium returning to the loading circuit; increasing the pH improved uranium loading, but this was found to also increase iron extraction; and preliminary screening of alternative resins showed that the higher the theoretical ion exchange capacity of the strong base resin, the higher the uranium loading.Work is continuing on uranium recovery from saline leach liquors, specifically investigating the performance of alternative resins.

Human exploration of Mars has been on the horizon of scientific goals for decades now, and as part of the objectives of human missions to various planets, one of the possible goals is opening new economic frontiers by the potential extraction and utilisation of resources, eg mining minerals and using surface regolith (Neukart, 2024). A comprehensive understanding of surface morphology, lithostratigraphy, basic structural geology, and civil engineering technology is essential to conduct mining operations for resource extraction on extraterrestrial planets. For instance, proper assessment of the risks associated with excavation and infrastructure construction under unique environments such as low gravity, surface irregularities, and the presence of regolith is fundamental. Such knowledge has been accumulated through satellite imagery and numerical topographic data using remote sensing technology, as well as seismic surveys by the on-site lander (Knapmeyer- Edrun et al, 2021; Banerdt et al, 2020; Giardini et al, 2020). Recent studies show that Marsquakes could be caused by the release of strain energy generated by the contraction of Mars. In particular, Marsquakes occur around the graben where many faults exist and form regularly spaced patterns. This implies that Marsquakes occur when the stress field of the Martian crust is an extension condition, and normal faults appear on the surface. In this study, we focus on so-called graben structures, one of Mars’s common tectonic structures (Plescia, 1991; Banerdt et al, 1992; Hoogenboom Hagen, 2014). The study aims to provide additional information about the tectonic environment during the formation of such features and, in addition, the internal mechanical-rheological structure of Mars, revealed by the geometrical pattern of faults modelled and simulated in a laboratory environment.

During the initial development of Mount Isa Mines power was supplied from a temporary power plant situated near the Man & Supply Shaft. The main power plant was placed in service early in 1931 and then comprised two Babcock and Willcox boilers, fired by pulverised fuel, and two British General Electric Company's turbo-alternators of 5,000 kW. each. Both plants have been described by A. F. McAskill in the Journal of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.From 1931 power demand progressively increased due to greater production, further mine development in the harder sulphides increased pumping for mine drainage and additions to mill and smelter until, by 1935, the plant was inadequate for further output commensurate with a reasonable safety margin.Coincident with the added power demand, operating conditions involved a fuel problem which could not have been anticipated. The ash content of the fuel supplied gradually increased from 13% to 16-5%, while the melting point of the ash decreased with higher pyrite content.Temperature conditions in the furnace required careful control to cope with ash formation and slag accretions.Consequently brickwork, excessively stressed on water walls, was constantly under repair, and required suspension periods of 50% of operating time for cleaning and overhaul.Load conditions varied continually, therefore the high heat liberations in the furnace, necessary to accommodate peaks in fluctuating output, resulted in ash fusion.

"In the design and operation of mineral processing plants, knowledge of the variability of ore properties and that of the expected metallurgical performance within the orebody is of great importance in order to avoid both production constraints due to inadequate design and less than expected metallurgical performance during operation. Of the many properties that determine the performance of downstream separation processes, such as flotation, gravity separation and leaching etc the liberation characteristics are of primary importance.Current methods of evaluating liberation characteristics of ores such as the use of Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and QEMSCAN techniques are expensive and suffer from the drawback that these tests are performed on comminuted particles at a given grind size and/or samples of product streams. This problem could be overcome by developing predictive models of liberation that can predict the grade distribution of comminuted products at any grind size based on texture of the parent rock. This paper discusses a procedure that has been developed to predict liberation using information obtained from a sample of the parent rock such as drill core, based on Barbery’s liberation models. The required characteristic statistical functions have been evaluated from image analysis techniques using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the parent rock and narrowly sized comminuted particles. Such information can then be used in a predictive model to predict or explain the variability of metallurgical performance at various grind sizes used in future operating plants. The model will predict not only the valuable mineral liberation but also gangue liberation, which will be useful to those who are looking to remove liberated gangue from comminution circuits.CITATION:Subasinghe, G K N, and Dunne, R, 2016. Characterising the weight percentage of each mineral in base metal ores is an integral part of assessing the quality of an ore in terms of its processing properties. The Rietveld method, which uses X-ray diffraction data, has been applied to routinely quantify the minerals in lead/zinc and copper ores from Mount Isa Mines Limited and supergene copper ores from Ernest Henry Mining as well as their related products from the concentrators. The Rietveld method has been tested by comparing Rietveld mineral data with a standard sample with known mineral weight percentages and comparing Rietveld mineral data with mineral data calculated from elemental assays where the element only exists in one mineral such as lead in galena. Where this latter situation does not occur, the Rietveld method has been checked with both elemental and optical microscope data. In all cases, there is a good correspondence between the Rietveld data and the data it was checked against with absolute differences generally in the range of 0.5 to 3 wt per cent. The Rietveld method generally quantifies all minerals occurring over 1 wt per cent in one analysis and is less expensive and more routine compared to traditional methods such as optical microscope point counting. The Rietveld method can be applied to many stages of the mining cycle such as exploration, feasibility studies, mining, minerals processing and for environmental studies.

Coal mining in the Illawarra commenced in 1848. By the early twentieth century mining operations were spread over quite a distance along the coast centred on Wollongong. By this time there were already numerous tunnel mines and one shaft mine. Coal was first reported in Illawarra by Lieutenant Flinders on a voyage of exploration, southerly along the coast from Sydney in 1796. Because of the topography, particularly the escarpment and the narrowness of the coastal plain, access from Sydney was not easy by land and the normal access was by sea. It was not until some coastal areas had been developed for agricultural purposes that the mining of the seams on the South Coast commenced for the supp- ly of fuel. The most important mines in the early nineteenth century were Bulli and Osborne Wallsend. In general, coal was won from the tunnel mines and was transported directly, usually by tramway, to the nearest shipping point. Considerable hardship attended the earliest attempts at mining coal in regard to materials for mining and the way of life of the miners in the vicinity of the mines. With the growth of production and the installation of coke ovens at some mines the area, hitherto virgin bush- land, began to take on a more industrialised appearance. In the human body, the balance between heat production and heat loss is continuously being disturbed, either by changes in metabolic rate (work being the most influential) or by changes in the external environment (heat stress), which alters heat loss. These changes in body temperature can adversely affect the function of body systems and organs. As a result, heat production or heat loss processes are triggered in order to restore normal body temperature (36 - 37¦C). If the heat generating systems of the body are excessive or the environment hostile then the capacity of the body to maintain thermal homeostasis is exceeded and can lead to a serious threat to health, or even death. This health deficit can severely affect an individualÆs capacity to work optimally; the end result is both poor productivity and health. Strategies to minimise or eliminate this effort will benefit both the health of workers and the productivity of companies. The principal strategies to reduce the effects of the environment on workers are: engineering interventions: to improve environmental conditions and reduce heat stress; and a comprehensive working in heat protocol: with provisions to identify risk situations and procedures to be adopted in relation to these. The above points will be discussed in detail with practical and simple strategies proposed to combat the deleterious effects of heat in mining.

Permanent rock bolts in civil engineering are taken as having to serve their design purpose for at least 50 years. In many projects the design life is specified as greater than 100 years. A review of recent Australian tunnelling projects shows that substantial differences exist in the level of corrosion protection provided for permanent steel shafted rock bolts. This paper reviews the current state of practice and sets out what the authors consider to be appropriate requirements for corrosion protection.

In July 1986, Cable Sands (W.A.) Pty Ltd commenced mining for mineral sands at Minninup, approximately 16 km south of Bunbury, Western Australia.The area being mined is from the heel of the foredune to the rear of the hind-dune. The vegetation is mostly native vegetation with some old degraded pasture.The mining operation will be by suction cutter dredge, with continuous dredging, mineral separation and re-depositing of the sand.

The stability of access tunnels is one of the main engineering challenges in deep underground mine construction. Many underground hard rock mining operations are now reaching depths where the induced stresses are such that sudden and violent failure of the excavations can occur very soon after construction. The loading conditions on the installed ground support schemes are often underestimated by conventional engineering design methods. Therefore, the actual loading conditions often exceed the installed ground support capacity. This can result in failure of the excavations and, in extreme cases, potentially closure of mining operations amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars in lost production. More frequently, violent excavation instability at great depth causes operational delays, costly and unplanned rehabilitation, as well as risks to worker safety. In order to address this challenge, this paper briefly summarises a modern, innovative approach to the design and construction of mine development at great depth. The process follows seven main steps. The first step is to characterise the rock mass strength, structure and stress. The second step is a stability assessment, which identifies the plausible modes of excavation failure, based on the rock mass characterisation. The third step is the definition of an excavation geometry which is harmonic to the high stress conditions. The fourth step is to prepare a site-specific face destressing drill and blast design which will reduce the potential for rock mass instability during the development construction cycle. The fifth step is to accurately quantify the expected loading conditions on the installed ground support. The method of doing so is uniquely analytical and probabilistic. It is based on the natural mechanical relationships between rock strength, structure, induced stress and the physical characteristics of the instability, including its mass and ejection velocity. The sixth step of the design process is to specify a ground support scheme arrangement with sufficient strength and displacement capacity to exceed the rock mass demand by a safe margin. The final stage is to install the complete ground support scheme using mechanised technologies which minimise the exposure of the equipment operators to unsupported ground at the tunnel face.

The dispersion pattern of heavy metals in soil and water is a consequence of complex geophysical and geochemical processes. Metal release from mining sites and subsequent migration occur primarily through acid mine drainage and erosion of waste and tailings dumps. Water plays a significant role in heavy metal mobilisation. Whilst it acts as a storage buffer for the pollutants, it is also the medium in which most of the reactions take place, and is undoubtedly the most significant transport vector in the pollution process. The intrinsic properties of the acidic drainage such as chemical composition, speciation of key mineral components, redox potential and pH are master variables controlling metal release, transport, deposition, reactivity and availability to biota. The mobility of heavy metals is strongly increased by acidification from acid mine drainage, and the discharge of these metals into the receiving waters results in numerous physical, chemical and biological responses in which the environment can affect the metal and vice versa. The result is an overwhelming number of association/dissociation, substitution, adsorption/desorption reactions, giving rise to a complex migration pattern. The attempt to understand and describe the dispersion pattern of heavy metals is complicated by the nature and level of interaction between the geochemical and hydrodynamic processes that generate and control the movement of the pollutants in the geosphere. Transport models which can be used to predict the behaviour of metal pollutants in a natural environment are still in the initial phases of development and their application to real life situations is limited. The Biochemical Cycle adds another dimension to the mobility of heavy metals. Metals form an important component of the food chain for man and plants. Biological uptake of metals from the bedrock and soil by organisms can result in migration paths very difficult to follow. Biodegradation or assimilation is just a tip of the iceberg.

The principal objective of Geotechnical Engineers supporting operating mines is to provide safe working conditions and ensure that pit designs are geotechnically optimised to site conditions and pre-defined stability requirements. Pit slope designs are delivered in advance of pit excavations. Making changes to these designs is usually slow to enact and involves a layered sign-off before implementation, leading to unwanted delays in their adoption and subsequently increased production pressures. When unexpected ground conditions are encountered during the mining process, or short-term mining schedule requirements demand it, changes to these designs may not be easily feasible in certain situations. It is when these scenarios arise that Geotechnical Engineers need to be proactive and consider unconventional options to deliver safe operating conditions while satisfying short-term requirements to the mine schedule. Essentially, the geotechnical short-term strategic designs double-pronged approach supports the mine schedule while providing safe conditions and minimising geotechnical risks for people and equipment. Common short-term strategic geotechnical designs include; slope buttressing, over-steepening cut slopes to increase reserve recovery through unplanned or emergency cutbacks, and accepting risk threat and operating under unstable slopes. When implementing strategic design options, the Geotechnical Engineer must consider the broader implications for such designs. They must think of the plan’s long-term effects on the mine schedule and pit wall stability. Initiating aggressive designs to recover additional reserves to satisfy a short-term scheduling demand could result in-pit wall instability or suboptimal pit layout. Before and during the implementation phase, the Geotechnical Engineer must communicate and engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the plan is executed accordingly and geotechnical risks are effectively managed. Proactiveness to ground response and implementation of risk management strategies will improve safety performance and optimise mining schedules.

Iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits account for the majority of current world iron ore production and consist of three classes: unenriched primary iron formation with typically 25 to 45 wt per cent Fe; martite-goethite ore formed by supergene processes, with abundant hydrous iron oxides containing 60 to 63 wt per cent Fe; and high-grade hematite ores thought to be of hypogene or metamorphic origin overprinted by subsequent supergene enrichment with 60 to 68 wt per cent Fe.Individual iron ore deposits range from a few millions of tonnes to over two billion tonnes at >64 wt per cent Fe, although most are within the range of 200 to 500 Mt. In the Hamersley Province of Western Australia, martite-goethite ores are largely developed in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, although high (>0.08 per cent P) phosphorous mineralisation is also well developed in the stratigraphically higher Brockman Iron Formation. Whilst the vast majority of high-grade microplaty hematite ore is best developed in the Brockman Iron Formation, this paper provides the first textural evidence of locally significant microplaty hematite mineralisation in the Nammuldi Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, in the Chichester Ranges at the Christmas Creek, Cloud Break and Mount Nicholas prospects. Petrographic studies have identified a high-grade Fe texture composed of nanometre scale plates of hematite in mineralised sections of primary microplaty hematite deposits in the Pilbara and elsewhere, well below the normal depth of weathering or dehydration. The population of nanometre to micrometre scale hematite plates is interpreted to represent various stages of nucleation, crystallisation and progressive growth of hematite from the primary ore-forming fluid in areas that were once iron-rich carbonates or silicates in the BIF.

Comparison of the Proterozoic Apparent Polar Wander Path (APWP) for Australia with the corresponding geology of northern Australia suggests that a number of discrete interplate tectonic events, manifested on the APWP as bends or inflections, may have controlled sedimentary basin evolution, ore fluid production and the timing of mineralisation. Similar features in the Phanerozoic APWP for the North American plate appear to correlate with major orogenic events, basin deformation, movement and 'entrapment' of hydrocarbons and minerals. Interplate tectonic events cause intraplate deformation which in turn controls the subsidence/uplift and sedimentation histories of the basins. Interplate events are thus responsible for creating, deforming and destroying sedimentary basins and the associated petroleum and mineral systems. The basins of northern Australia show remarkable similarities in the successions of volcanic and sedimentary deposits. Unconforrnities of regional or sometimes only local extent have been mapped between the major sedimentary sequences and it is predicted that interplate tectonic events corresponding to bends or inflections on the APWP directly reflect the processes that have produced these widespread unconformities. These processes are also likely to have controlled the geometry and character of the fluid migration pathways and hence the mineralising events. Palaeomagnetic studies of Proterozoic rocks in sedimentary basins provide a tool for predicting the timing of regional mineralisation events, particularly for low-temperature mineral systems. The techniques, when coupled with systematic regional basin analysis, using petroleum exploration techniques, may identify a number of new mineral 'plays' in northern Australia. Prominent inflections in the APWP occur at approximately 1700, 1670, 1650, 1600, 1540, and 1480 Ma. Each of these may be related to a regional compressional deformation, important mineralising event, or significant change in style and type of sedimentation. Most appear to be associated with magnetic overprints. Some of the inflections between 1400 and 540 Ma may also mark significant events in the evolution of Meso- and Neoproterozoic basins. Further work is required to correlate inflections in the APWP with alteration events in order to understand their regional significance.

Although mining, particularly of gold and coal, played a significant role in the development of New Zealand, from the time of the spectacular gold rushes of the 1860s its economic importance to the country as a whole has decreased substantially since that time. Gold, coal and non-metallic agricultural and industrial minerals have been found in economically significant quantities, however, the search for base metals has not been successful.

The Central Coal Mining Research Institute has developed the MAE acoustic emission monitoring system, the BD4-1 portable acoustic emission monitor and the MRB rock burst monitoring system. In the MAE system there is an IBM-PLAT, a receiver and 16 channels and the investigating range is 100 m. The main functions are detecting acoustic events from the working faces, periodically making statistics, prints, displays and storing of the results, and performing the off-line process such as drawing the curves of acoustic activity. The BD4-1 instrument has four channels, it works for more than 24 hours continuously, and keeps the data for more than 30 days after power tum-off. The BD4-1 is suited to the monitoring for a long or a short time as a fixed point where the system is invalid, especially to the monitoring of the acoustic activity promoted by the blasting. There is an IBM-PC/AT, a receiver and 16 channels spread 10 km in the system MRB. The system could on-line collect microseismic events throughout the whole mine, calculate the source location and the energy, and off-line draw the seismic activity draft of time-based or distribution in space. In practice, the forecasting is successful by using the acoustic emission and microseismic monitoring system and the portable instrument.

Vatukoula is credited with the second largest population in the Colony of Fiji. Within an area comprising 550 acres are living approximately 4,500 people. he Melbourne City Link project will complete a missing link between two existing major freeways in the Melbourne road network, providing a much needed bypass of the Central Business District for through traffic. The project, which is being financed under a BOOT arrangement with the Victorian State Government, involves the upgrading of significant stretches of existing freeway and the construction of new sections involving viaducts and tunnels. The tunnel sections, which are the focus of this paper, are beneath residential and business areas, the Yarra River, the Royal Botanic Gardens and significant sporting facilities where surface construction would be either impossible or unacceptable (reference Figure 1). The shorter, 1.62 km west bound Domain tunnel comprises two cut and cover sections through Olympic Park then the Yarra River, the driven section of 0.68 km length and exits through a common cut and cover section with the east bound tunnel under St Kilda Road and Sturt Street. The longer 3.76 km east bound tunnel commences at the common portal, through cut and cover under St Kilda Road then 2.86 km of driven section before exiting at a cut and cover section at Burnley. The longer Burnley tunnel has an access and ventilation shaft at approximately its mid point.

The primary mine planning focus during early study phases of future mining projects is Life of Asset ore production and grade quality, this will always be the situation. While waste schedule optimisation is generally considered in the latter study phases nearing execution for a limited number of schedule periods only and not a true optimisation considering all attributes such as waste destination location, design, cycle time and closure. This can be particularly applicable in large multi-pit bulk mining operations where one approach to meet Life of Asset ore tonnes and grade targets has been to maintain pit development flexibility resulting in large open pit areas and substantial expit Overburden Storage Area (OSA).
