Optimal throughput is a key objective for the successful operation of any manufacturing or processing business. In the mining industry in particular, in order to obtain maximum return on the significant capital investment in the physical assets involved, ensuring continuous throughput is a major focus for the complete leadership team. Failure to meet throughput objectives becomes a major source of distraction for management which too often attempts to solve shortfalls by æforcingÆ and æenforcingÆ production targets. This focus on the short term and the lack of attention to addressing root causes frustrates operators who attempt to satisfy unattainable short-term targets and lose sight of the long-term goal. Mount Isa Copper Operations, Xstrata Copper, North Queensland, had ambitious plans to increase throughput volume by ten per cent within a four month period to allow budgets to be achieved within the financial year. To achieve this, the process had to overcome the interplay of a multi-node (æsiloedÆ) production system and its associated inventories, each node, of which on the face of it at least, had more than enough ænameplateÆ capacity to meet these plans. However, the actual volume achieved at the end point of the system was well below this nameplate capacity and the system operated with an extraordinarily high standard deviation. The key issues in terms of making or exceeding plan were: how to substantially reduce the variability of the system and managing the inventories between nodes, how to synchronise throughput between the production nodes, and how to improve the decision-making ability within the process. In this paper, the implementation team has shown that a revolutionary process view of the operation together with appropriate planning decisions allowed increased throughput to be achieved without further capital investment.

One common problem for blasting in iron ore mines with significant weathering is the occurrence of large blocks of hard rock mixed with softer material. This situation causes a problem for blasting design and sometimes produces large boulders of rock that require a secondary blasting, as well as excavation difficulties. To minimise this situation, geophysical techniques were used to identify the hardest material amid the weathered material. To study the problem, seismic, ground penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity and induced polarisation (IP) methods were used in an intensely weathered Brazilian iron ore deposit. The methods of GPR combined with IP, resistivity and seismic showed to be effective in modelling the contrast among hard, friable materials and soil. The results were used to improve the geological model and create more favourable conditions for the subsequent blast design. The blast design based on geophysical/geological models resulted in significant improvement in the fragmentation of the iron ore. This was achieved by the adoption of a specific drilling pattern for a given geological situation. In recent years there has been a major change among mining companies in their mining methods. This has been driven by the need to increase shareholder value and optimising the value from an operation. With this understanding there has been a need for all producers to become more efficient in their mining processes. An analysis of the coal losses at Mount Thorley Operations indicated that the major losses were in the dragline section of the mine due to coal damage from throw blasting. This damage was evident after the removal of the overburden by the dragline.Coal and Allied Mount Thorley Mine in partnership with Orica Explosives developed a process to reduce the coal loss associated with the throw blasting of Mt Thorley. Orica provided its specialised knowledge and experience in the drilling and blasting area and combined this with the local mining knowledge and expertise of Mount Thorley Operations personnel to conduct the project. This partnership reduced coal loss in excess of 50 per cent whilst maintaining targeted dragline productivity.

There are several factors that are increasing the need for new graduates to be ready to design and manage more autonomous operations at mines. Autonomous controls and systems range from the start-up, control, and shutdown of processing plants to the autonomous operation of vehicles. These operations require the workers, engineers, and management to have additional skills for programming, debugging, tasking, and maintaining the equipment. The future survivability of many mining operations will be influenced by a company’s willingness and ability to understand, accept, and utilise this technology for safe and productive operations. This is an educational opportunity and challenge that needs to be addressed throughout the student’s experience, from first year to graduate level. This paper discusses the lessons learned from a decade of multidepartment effort at all student levels and many courses that are able to incorporate data science, controls, and autonomous design into the already topic-rich national curriculum. This approach also exposes other engineering disciplines to the mining industry which is a valuable recruiting tool for talent outside of the mining engineering departments.

THE absence of any locality maps of the district of Morobe has been seriously felt by mining engineers engaged on the goldfields, and as it was evident at the beginning of operations that the administration would be unable to make good this deficiency, ascheme for making rapid traverses was worked out, and in all subsequent travelling the necessary records were kept for the construction of a reliable reconnaissance map of the Bulolo goldfield and its approaches (see Plate 1.). Since all the field work had tobe carried out without encroaching on primary duties, the compilation of sufficient data was a somewhat lengthy business. It was found that in this r;ough country a pedometer was useless, as it was impossible to calibrate it for the variation in length ofpace between climbing semi-precipices and walking over level country. Further, the native tracks "meander" so excessively that the only method of calculating air-line distance is by timing, and a knowledge of what the timing represents, and until a 10kg experience had been gained in the time taken to cover known distances in various types of-country, one could not feel competent to estimate sufficiently accurately. It was found that reliability could be attained only when walking at nearly top pace. Inregard to aeroplane traverses, results were reliable only when the air was fairly still.BEARINGSIn arriving at the bearing between main traverse points, the method used was to keep a "boy" about two chains- behind when marching and sight back on him, standing, at about two-chain intervals. The future of any mining company depends on maintaining and growing its access to high-quality mineral resources. Often the true size of a given resource is not fully recognised until after mining has commenced. Also, the strong desire to increase production puts pressure to expand the resource base of the mine to get maximum value out of the capital employed. This, plus diminishing M&A opportunities and declining world-class greenfield discovery rates, makes brownfields exploration a high priority activity in any operating company. For the success and long-term survival of the company it is critical that this is done well. The primary aim of brownfields exploration is to find or acquire new deposits within economic transport distance of an existing mine that will add materially to shareholder value through: mine or capacity expansion, displacement of lower-margin ore from the mine plan, preserving and extending the mine life, and ensuring potential value is understood in order to maximise potential future mine development or exit. A number of strategic principles are important in any program designed to achieve these aims: understanding the life of mine (LOM) production profile and the related key drivers for exploration, understanding the dynamic nature of the brownfields search space, understanding and measuring depletion of the brownfields search space, understanding the potential of the near-mine region, investing in exploration technology to expand the search space, and investing in a basic geological understanding of the ore-environment. Examination of the LOM profile will highlight critical issues facing development plans for the mine including future grade and throughput issues, key technology requirements or innovations and scenarios for increased production. Exploration targets in the brownfields program should address these key issues. Often it is as æsimpleÆ as keeping mine development sufficiently far ahead of extraction to allow time for the various phases of exploration and resource assessment drilling. Because of the low additional capital costs required, expansion of the brownfields search space is strongly leveraged to: metal prices, development of new markets, incremental operating cost reductions, strategic changes in downstream requirements in integrated businesses, depletion of higher unit-value ores, and new technologies (both extraction and exploration). Therefore the brownfields search space is likely to incrementally expand through time and must be regularly reviewed. This is also important as any given search space will be progressively exhausted, resulting in smaller and higher cost discoveries. It is therefore important to monitor and critically review sustained trends of increasing brownfields discovery cost. The first wave of discoveries in any camp are usually empirically driven and do not need a strong geological understanding. However, an improved geological understanding is critical to making the next generation of hidden discoveries. To illustrate these points, a case study was carried out on the exploration and development history of the Kambalda nickel camp. Over a period of 40 years, more than 40 deposits were found containing over 1.7 million tonnes of nickel metal. Efficient mines need to maintain reserves for operating flexibility. Consequently, the company needs to clearly understand the global resource in order to maximise its full potential. In addition, understanding the full brownfields potential earlier in the development of a deposit rather than later, creates optionality through the flexibility that this understanding brings to future development choices. To ensure best practice in attaining this aim, the roles and responsibilities of the exploration team and the mine operation should be clearly understood. It is important for the explorers and the operators to have shared views about what needs to be done. Typically, mine operators would be accountable for identifying future resource requirements to support the life-of-mine production schedule whilst explorers would be accountable to ensure best-practice assessment of brownfields exploration opportunities. This would include an assessment of the global undiscovered endowment in the regional near-mine area. The balance between brownfield exploration drilling and resources to reserve conversion will need to be decided to ensure efficient operations are maintained. Both need to agree the optimum level of brownfields funding taking into account: urgency to replace or grow reserves, and quality of opportunities (relative to those elsewhere). The ultimate cost of ignoring the full brownfields potential of an operating asset can be significant, ranging from inefficient and poorly planned operations, lost opportunity cost and resultant value through under-utilised resources and, in the worst case, early exit from the asset at the bottom of the commodity cycle û leaving behind huge amounts of shareholder value.

Reliable sampling practices are the key to optimising the market value of a mining or chemical companyÆs stock. As a result, reliable sampling standards are needed. However, current standards on sampling present the æuniversalÆ Pierre GyÆs Sampling Theory in an ambiguous way. For example, the Total Sampling Error is divided into its basic components only in informative annexes, when it should clearly be the main body of the standard. Sampling standards are presently loaded with statistical concepts that actually belong in the annexes. Furthermore, many non-probabilistic sampling procedures are still mentioned which do not belong in a standard. The objective is not to criticise existing sampling standards, but to suggest better ones. Sections on the Sampling Theory should divide the Total Sampling Error into a sum of its nine basic components. Then, and only then, should they be addressed one at the time. Sections for establishing a sampling protocol should address the in situ Nugget Effect, the Fundamental Error, the Grouping and Segregation Error, the Long Range Quality Fluctuation Error, and the Periodic Quality Fluctuation Error. Sections for sampling methods, mechanical sampling, manual sampling, grab sampling, sampling of trucks, railroad cars, bags, and drums should be part of the critically important practical implementation of a recommended sampling protocol, called Sampling Correctness. It includes the increment Delimitation Error, the increment Extraction Error, the Weighting Error, and the Preparation Errors. Unless these errors are addressed one at a time, in an unambiguous way, the standard will remain ineffective in solving sampling problems for the industry. Therefore, a strategy is needed to create better standards required at the early stages of new projects, both by manufacturers of sampling equipment and by engineering firms. A logical sequence of important points that cannot be ignored in any sampling standard is presented. An analysis of the practical use of the words sampling uncertainty versus sampling error is recalled. Finally, as a practical example, an in-depth analysis of the correctness of cross-belt samplers is presented, and emphasis is placed on the correct ways to perform bias-tests for mechanical sampling systems.

The usual focus of papers on fatty acid collector action in non-sulfide flotation is on the adsorption of the carboxylate and/or neutral molecule species at the mineral-solution interface. Little attention is paid as to whether or not the solution conditions correspond to true solutions, micellar and other self-assembly objects or precipitates. Our examination of the solution chemistry of the important fatty acid collector, oleic acid, has revealed that many, if not most investigators set their experimental conditions to be in micellar or precipitate domains while arguing, often by implication, that they have only solute species present. We have investigated the equilibrium solution domains usually encountered in studies of oleic acid flotation of such minerals as barite, calcite and fluorite. The alkaline earth-fatty acid and liquid oleic acid precipitate phases exert a strong influence on the solution chemistry, a fact not often appreciated in many studies.

DURING a period extending over about the last two and a half years, the performances of various types of rock drills in use at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation have been recorded as closely as possible. The main objective was the collection of sufficient data regarding internal water-feed hammer drills, when used for the same class of work as the older type reciprocating drill, to enable a decision to be formed on the following points:(1) Whether internal water-feed, hammer drills could efficiently perform the work previously carried out by reciprocating drills without excessive repair cost to the former.(2) If so, was it good policy commercially to eliminate the reciprocating type completely, writing these off together with the accompanying spares, accessories, and solid drill steel, and replacing with internal water-feed hammer drills, with lighter fittings, and the requisite amount of hollow drill steel.(3) What were the best types and makes of hammer drill for different classes of mining work(4) What was the economic aspect of the introduction of the principle of internal water feed to every type of machine throughout the mine.Prior to the strike of workers in May, 1919, Ingersoll-Rand E47 31-in. reciprocating drills had been used for stoping and for the major portion of driving, cross-cutting, and similar work. The accompanying columns and fittings were all 4t in. The drill steel used was solid octagon. Up to 1916 these machines were also used for winzing, after which time jackhamers were more successfully employed. These latter were of the usual types, varying in weight from 40 to' 46 Ib. Ingersoll BCR 430, Holman No. 2 spool valve, Sullivan DP33,. Waugh Clipper 55. These machines were all dry head; the drill steel was hollow hexagon, shanked.

"Dynamic decision-making can significantly increase the value of mining projects and deliver better sustainability outcomes under conditions of uncertainty. Despite its benefits, dynamic decision-making is rarely used by the mining industry, possibly because of the complexity of the algorithms used to make sequential decisions under uncertainty and difficulties in visualising the optimal strategies. To achieve better outcomes in practice, decision-makers in industry would benefit from a tool that would help them to understand and implement the results of the analysis.CSIRO is developing innovative dynamic decision support tools that include an intuitive graphical display of the boundaries between the regions of different optimal decisions, which would significantly assist optimal sequential decision-making under uncertainty. The dynamic decision support tool is based on novel stochastic optimal control methodologies that can be used to optimise decisions in situations with multiple uncertain variables and decisions (Tarnopolskaya, Chen and Bao, 2015; Chen et al, 2015; Langrené et al, 2015). The DeGrussa copper deposit was discovered by Sandfire Resources in April 2009. Construction of the 1.6 Mt/a concentrator, open pit and underground mining operations commenced in March 2011 with first concentrate production achieved in October 2012. Over the next ten years, DeGrussa grew to include both the DeGrussa and Monty underground mines, establishing itself as one of the world’s premier copper producers with total production of 663 000 t of contained copper by the time the mine closed. Final ore was trucked from Degrussa on 5 October 2022. This paper examines the mine closure experience from both a planning and operational perspective. The paper provides an overview of the site’s mine planning process including the factors involved in determining the end of the mine life and how this was tracked and communicated in the lead up to the end of mining operations. It will also look at some of the specific operational aspects involved in maintaining steady state production all the way through to the last day while facing increasingly challenging conditions. These factors, along with the external factors faced by most of the industry such as labour shortages and COVID related disruptions, contributed to making it an interesting journey to the end of operations at DeGrussa.

Continuous improvement might be defined as seeking incremental improvement over time through improved equipment, processes, technology and the efforts of people. Most people working in ore processing facilities embrace the general principles of continuous improvement. However, given the industry-wide issues with skilled personnel and the constantly changing environment in ore processing facilities, it is often difficult to identify improvements in a facility over a given time period. The driver for these outcomes is the use of basic principles and technology to achieve best practice targets. The process involves four stages: develop standards of practice to define best practice in specific areas; write procedures to guide the organisation towards these best practices; implement the procedures and develop a review process to provide a method of measuring performance against best practice.By reviewing performance against best practice on a regular basis, the organisation measures progress towards the best practice targets and the incremental improvement between these regular reviews is a measure of continuous improvement.This paper provides the background for developing standards of practice for metal accounting, metallurgy and metallurgical management. Woodcutters is a polymetallic vein-style deposit hosted by sediments of the Palacoproterozoic Whites Formation which forms part of the sedimentary sequence in the central Pine Creek Geosyncline. Past production and identified resources total over eight million tonnes at 5.5 per cent lead, 12.1 per cent zinc and 110 gA silver. The local geology is influenced by Archaean basement highs; the Rum Jungle and Waterhouse Complexes. Unconformably overlying basement are interbedded clastic and crystalline carbonate units (Batchelor Group) representing cyclic changes in the depositional environment. These exhibit onlapping features with the underlying rocks. Sediments of the overlying Frances Creek Group suggest a quiet period during subsidence and subsequent increase in water depth (the carbonaceous dolomitic shales and the interbedded dololutites of the Whites Formation) followed by proximal uplift resulting in the inundation of turbiditic flows (Acacia Gap Quartzite). All of the Palaeoproterozoic rocks show evidence of being affected by penecontemporaneous, basement circling faults with steep dips. The stress regime during the deposition of the Frances Creek Group was characterised by alternating episodes of thrusting and transpression. Periods of relaxation also occurred. The compression resulted in major NS strike-slip (transpressional) faulting, en-echelon NNE trending folds and NW-SE tensional cross faults. Thrusting produced N-S striking, steep dipping reverse faults and a possible decollement immediately above the Batchelor Group. Relaxation is evidenced by the intrusion of lamprophyre dykes and dolerite sills (Zamu Dolerite). Mineralisation at Woodcutters occurred in faults within the Whites Formation, probably synchronous with deformation and the deposition of the upper parts of the Frances Creek Group. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred as the rocks were further buried. Several massive sulphide bodies occur at Woodcutters. A number of features influence the location and shape of these bodies. They are: ò the N-S transpressional faults and in particular associated dilation zones; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the axial plane of the NNE trending Woodcutters Anticline; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the NW-SE cross-faults; ò intersection of dololutite rich units with the NS transpressional faults where local replacement takes place; ò thickening of the lithological units in the vicinity of the anticlinal axis; and ò the anticline doubly plunging to both the north and south. The mineralisation exhibits vein-like features as well as epigenetic textures. Its boundaries are sharp, its thickness varies rapidly down dip and along strike, and no alteration halo exists though stringer veins of quartz-carbonate-pyrite ¦ sphalerite/galena occur in close proximity. A number of sulphide mineral assemblages have been recognised, each separated by periods of deformation and partially replacing the earlier assemblages. Vertically continuous zonation patterns highlight the presence of rich galena-sphalerite-silver in zones of maximum dilation and pyrite-arsenopyrite-gold concentrated at the along strike peripheries. The genetic model proposed has the mineralisation occurring whilst the transpressional regime was active. The installation of on-line analysis systems in the open-pit mines of the Public Power Corporation SA (PPC, the state-owned electricity entity of Greece) is considered to be the key-parameter for performing improved quality control and blending/homogenisation of the produced lignite. In order to investigate the accuracy of these systems under the site-specific conditions of the Greek lignite deposits, a research project was carried out. This was necessary since there is lack of experience in using on-line analysers in mines that produce a fuel of such a poor and largely fluctuating quality. After thorough market research, a dual energy gamma ray transmission on-line ash analyser was installed in Kardia mine of Ptolemais û Amynteon Lignite Centre, which is located in West Macedonia, Greece. The initial results obtained after the realisation of a series of dual-comparison trials (ie using two series of reference values that allow three-way comparisons) pointed out several problems that obstacle the achievement of high accuracy on-line measurements. More specifically, the measurements obtained by the analyser were higher than the concentrations determined by the two laboratories when the ash content was lower than 12 per cent (in wet basis). On the contrary, when the ash content was higher than 12 per cent, the measurements of the on-line analyser were lower than the concentrations determined by the laboratories. In other words, the range of the measurements obtained by the analyser was narrower than that corresponding to the lab analyses results. Therefore, the use of this on-line analysis system under the site-specific operating conditions of Kardia mine does not guarantee improved quality control of the lignite fed to the mine-mouth located power plant. Most probable reasons that explain the above-mentioned problems are the following: The frequent and widely ranging fluctuations of the chemical and mineralogical composition of the lignite transported by the conveyor belt, especially as far as its calcium content is concerned. This result from the nature and the origin of the mineral matter co-excavated with the lignite, which varies from calcareous marls to sands and clays rich in aluminium and silica minerals. The fire safety design for road tunnels includes the following aspects: active systems, passive provisions and operational procedures. The active systems include the smoke control system, fire suppression system, detection system and fire fighter’s assistance systems. Passive provisions include escape passages, fire separation and fire resistance systems. The operational procedures refer to fire fighter access, reporting and alerts, evacuation processes and crowd control.Currently, these systems are typically designed by different designers or teams. These systems are intended to work together in a coordinated manner to provide the desired safety outcome. However, in practice, this is not always happening. The fire engineering process is supposed to bring together all these aspects and arrive at an integrated safety system. The fi re engineering process in practice is not integrating the design with the practice or reality and is thus arriving at less than desirably efficient safety systems.The example of design inputs shows how disconnected each system design basis is. The smoke control system design is based on the design fire size. The performance of the smoke control system is to achieve a smoke free environment for a defined space for a particular fire size – the design fire. The fire suppression system – most commonly sprinklers or deluge systems, is designed according to codes and to achieve a certain water discharge rate. The fire detection system is designed to detect temperature rise/rate of rise and perhaps density of smoke. Fire separation is determined to provide a certain period of service – mostly for structural elements. Escape route size and location is determined mostly by code compliance. Evacuation procedures are determined by Authority operational requirements rather than human behaviour.To arrive at an integrated fire safety system, the design basis and performances must be coordinated. An approach using fire scenarios would ensure all systems are designed to a common performance requirement. This paper will discuss how the current design approach outcomes compared with a fire scenario approach. More effective and efficient fire safety systems would require the stake holders to understand the implication of this approach and to embrace this through the fire engineering process.

The Grootegeluk coal beneficiation plant is situated near Ellisras in the Waterberg coal= field in the Transvaal, RSA. At this plant 15 million tons of coal bearing material per annum are beneficiated by means of two-stage heavy medium bath and cyclone plants. Because of the very low yield of 12 % coking coal product, run= ping costs are of the - utmost importance. For this reason extensive tests were carried out to establish the most effective crushing and bene= ficiation methods and suitable aquipment. At the second heavy medium separation stage, the near-gravity material (+ 0,1. g/cc) amounts to 45 % and daily plant performance ana=lysis is required to ensure acceptable plant efficiency. Beneficiation processes for the -0,5 mm coal originally considered were froth flotation, shaking tables, heavy medium cyclones and water- only cyclones. When the froth flotation route was decided upon, further test work was done to enable selection of the equipment most suitable for the particular requirements.

This paper is for mine managers. It is about maintenance of mining equipment. This is an extremely broad subject so this paper is given with the caveat that it necessarily contains generalisations, not true in all cases, but broadly correct. The job of mine managers is to be good at making money from the excavation and preliminary treatment of mineral. To do this well, they need to understand the cost and value drivers in the business. This includes understanding the drivers associated with maintenance. Maintenance is often identified as a problem at mine sites. It is frequently listed as the cause of production shortfalls when reporting. The state of maintenance within mining as an industry is generally among the lower end of the range, when compared to manufacturing, petrochemicals, etc. Why is this? Experience and review of many audits and evaluations of maintenance has shown that some patterns are consistent with good performance and some consistent with poor performance. These often centre around the time horizon of the management team and are associated with knowing the sensitivity of the business to certain maintenance drivers and the mechanisms of maintenance and their results. To summarise, some common misunderstandings can be listed as statements that are obvious and extrapolations from those, which are not necessarily correct. For example: High availability of equipment is necessary for production. Incorrect extrapolation:focus on availability will produce high production. Design is often the greatest factor in determining the reliability of a mining machine. Incorrect extrapolation: the newest and biggest machines generally have the lowest cost operations. Operation has an enormous impact on machine productivity and reliability. Incorrect extrapolation: the fastest operators are generally the best from a productive point of view. Some maintenance improves the performance and reliability of machines. Incorrect extrapolation: more maintenance will give you more reliability. Some maintenance depends on disassembly and reassembly of components. Incorrect extrapolation: assembly is basically the reverse process of disassembly. Maintenance improvement in the mining industry in the last 15 years has focused largely on planning and systems improvement. Incorrect extrapolation: most of the problems in maintenance can be traced to a lack of planning. Actions based on flawed extrapolations will steer a business suboptimally. It is therefore important that the mine manager understands these issues so that the improvement effort can be directed to the greatest benefit.

The knowledge of the expected run of mine (ROM) fragmentation during the feasibility study of a green field site is essential for the design of downstream crushing and milling processes. However,the prediction of blast fragmentation can be a challenging process due to the uncertainty related to the blast design and rock mass parameters. In general,a number of possible blast designs are considered in a feasibility study,with factors such as bench height and blasthole diameter influencing the design. Rock mass parameters are normally derived from a limited number of geotechnical diamond drill cores. Although diamond drill core can provide detailed information concerning intact rock strength (unconfined compressive strength and point load),it provides limited structural information to predict the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass. The in situ block size is an essential input to the prediction of the fragmentation distribution, in particular the coarse end. This paper outlines the methodology of blast fragmentation modeling undertaken for a green field feasibility study at the Riska gold deposit in Indonesia. The favoured milling process for the feasibility study was dump leaching,with no crushing of the ore material extracted from the pit. For this reason,blast fragmentation was a critical issue to be addressed by the study. A range of blast designs were considered with bench heights and blasthole diameters ranging from 4 m to 7 m and 76 mm to 102 mm respectively. Rock mass data was obtained from 19 diamond drill cores across the deposit (total drill length approximately 2200 m). Intact rock strength was estimated from qualitative strength descriptors,while the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass was estimated from the Rock Quality Designation (RQD) of the core. The methodology of fragmentation prediction involved a number of steps including the estimation of rock mass parameters from diamond drillhole data including the estimation of the in situ block size, delineation of blast domains within the deposit,and the assessment of the impact of various blast design parameters and rock mass variation on the predicted fragmentation distribution. The modelling process for the Riska green field site highlighted the need for additional rock mass data to be collected post feasibility stage and once the development of the mine commenced.

The main tectonic elements in Myanmar are a late Mesozoic and Cenozoic magmatic arc system in the west, repeated in northern Myanmar by more than 300 km of dextral movement on the Sagaing Fault, and the back-arc continental region affected by early and late Mesozoic orogenies, in the east. Historically most lode gold production has been from latest Cretaceous high-grade mesothermal veins and derived placers in the Wuntho and Tagaung-Myitkyina segments of the magmatic arc. Placer deposits in the Ayerwaddy River north of Myitkyina are currently worked by more than 100-bucket dredges. South of Wuntho, the magmatic arc and Pegu Yoma fold belt host epithermal gold with associated As, Sb and Zn in mid-Tertiary marine sediments. MyanmarÆs most productive lode gold deposit, the Kyaukpahto mine, lies within a north-trending district east of the magmatic arc and north of Mandalay. Here mineralisation and associated jasperoidal silica occur in Eocene sandstones and Permian and Triassic carbonates. Possibly this district continues southeastwards, across the Sagaing Fault, as sediment-hosted Sb Au and locally skarn Au mineralisation within a 1100 km long fold-thrust belt. Also present in the back-arc region are sandstone-hosted Au Cu in a Palaeozoic slate belt, and gold and stratabound gold-base metal mineralisation in the medial metamorphic belt. While untested targets remain in the magmatic arc, particularly for high sulphidation Au, the best potential is clearly within the back-arc slate and fold-thrust belts in the western part of the Shan Plateau and in northeastern-most Myanmar.

"Best practice for acid rock drainage (ARD) risk assessment still relies solely on the geochemical properties of sulfidic rocks and mineral processing products, despite the fact that a rockÆs tendency to produce acid also depends on mineralogy and texture. Consequently, there are a plethora of geochemical tests routinely utilised by the mining industry to predict ARD formation. Due to limitations associated with these tests and their relatively high costs, analysis of recommended best practice sample numbers is rarely achieved, reducing the accuracy of waste management plans. Our research addressed this through examining the application of geometallurgical data for predicting acid formation, and led to the identification of potential environmental geometallurgy indicators.Samples obtained from an iron-oxide copper gold deposit were subjected to the geochemistry-mineralogy-texture (GMT) approach, an improved methodology for classifying acid forming potential. GMT results were compared against geometallurgical and assay data sets to evaluate: relative carbonate content measurements (measured by HyLogger) and identify how these could be used to calculate effective acid neutralising capacity mineral hardness (measured by EQUOtip) to determine application of this data for calculating lag-time to acid formation opportunities to automate the acid rock drainage index (ARDI) using classified images produced by a GEOTEK logger and automated microscopy.Links between the GMT approach and geometallurgical data sets were identified. Classified mineralogy data has application at stage one, HyLogger and EQUOtip at stage two and computer-based ARDI evaluations of classified images at stage three. Through such integration, ARD characterisation costs can be reduced, with value added to geometallurgical data sets. Furthermore, deposit-wide ARD domaining is possible, and acquisition of total-orebody knowledge more likely. Through adoption of this environmental geometallurgy approach, a better informed waste management plan can be formulated, allowing for best practice ARD sampling in a more cost-effective manner.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A, Lottermoser, B and Bradshaw, D J, 2013.
