The rocks of the Serranias Chilla massif of Bolivia are a suite of metamorphosed Palaeozoic basalts and associated continental sediments. Whole-rock trace element geochemistry of the basalts suggest a calc-alkaline affinity and indicate that subduction extended as far north as the Bolivian Altiplano during lower Palaeozoic time.

Following a decline in direct and indirect employment in the minerals industry between 2000 and 2003, the situation reversed in 2004 and employment rose by 12 per cent. Furthermore, there are forecasts of continuing employment growth in the minerals industry in the immediate future. For those of us charged with promoting the virtues of a career in the minerals industry this is encouraging news, as it provides us with the evidence to promote the increasing employment opportunities of a healthy and vibrant industry. However, for many others û particularly the employers in this industry û the news is not so rosy. The jobs are there, and in increasing numbers, but the workers arenÆt! Employers right across the industry are finding it increasingly difficult to fill vacancies with suitably qualified and skilled employees and the competition is becoming fiercer. In the minerals and energy sector, questions are being asked and solutions sought on the industryÆs ability to attract and retain a skilled workforce. From many quarters û industry, government and the education sector, calls for urgent action are becoming louder. The reasons for this are well known û the nature of the work, the remote location, perceptions of the industry, an aging workforce, the gender imbalance, the shrinking demographic of school leavers. It is the latter I wish to focus on û the Generation Y demographic û those who have recently left school, those who are in higher education or have recently entered the workforce, or those who are still at secondary school. These young people are the next cohort of potential employees for the industry. But our need for them appears to be greater that their perceived need for us! How do we engage them so they are informed about the industry? How do we inform and advise them so they are prepared to consider further education and training in disciplines and skill areas relating to our industry? How do we guide and motivate them to give it their best shot and work in it û at least for part of their working life? These are fundamental questions that many within the industry have been grappling with for quite some time. Let me share with you some of the strategies that the Minerals Council is implementing to address this issue.

Long Shaft has traditionally been seen as one of the most challenging mines in the Kambalda area with operations having been suspended by the previous owners in 1999. When mining recommenced in October 2002, the current owners (Lightning Nickel) decided that a different approach was required for mining operations in such an aggressive geotechnical environment. This paper describes how Lightning Nickel has successfully and safely operated the Long Shaft complex on a traditional mining approach, which encompasses the key learnings of the previous owners.

Safety bulletins and stickers issued for the paste backfill plant at Cannington read as follows: æCannington Paste Fill Plant, First of ItÆs Kind in AustraliaÆ. We could even dare to state that the Cannington plant is different than any other paste backfill plant in the world because of the overall design, plant equipment and underground delivery. However, one thing to be certain of is, the paste backfill plant works as designed and a pump is not required to deliver paste underground given the general plant arrangement at Cannington. The past two years have been a process of evolution to design and construct the plant and make it work. This paper will describe the paste process using full mill tails along with placement of cemented paste underground. Discussions will include rationale of fixed plant selection along with various control requirements. BHP World Minerals recently commissioned its paste backfill plant in December 1997. Cannington is placing full mill tails underground via two surface boreholes that deliver either to primary or secondary stopes.

Prior to exploitation, the feasibility of mining and recovering ore can usually be determined to a satisfactory level of uncertainty by the consideration of conceptual scenarios, using a range of reasonable parameter values. Such values are selected on experience, knowledge of other mining operations, and the characteristics of the particular deposit being considered. Having established such feasibility, it is usually considerably more demanding to determine what the optimum set of parameters might be. Yet many decisions taken at the feasibility stage represent commitments extending at least into the medium term.

Wet sticky iron ore poses particular difficulties in every aspect of the material handling process. Material hang-ups in bins, pipes and chutes; carry-back and spillage due to insufficient belt cleaning; clogging of screens; malfunctioning of crushers as well as rat holing of gravity reclaimed stockpiles are all predominantly due to the inherent cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore (Roberts, 1993). Limited understanding and quantitative measures on the stickiness of such a material significantly lower the mining operation efficiency.This research aims to investigate the cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore on physical modelling, experimental techniques and numerical implementation. Initially, the suitable bridging mechanism that contributes to the cohesive and adhesive forces within the iron ore material was identified (Hering, Martin and Stohrer, 1989; Rumpf, 1958). A cohesion/adhesion energy density factor based contact model was then introduced to describe the stickiness of the material. Secondly, an experimental system was proposed to directly test the stickiness of the material. Such a system is able to obtain both the cohesive/adhesive shear force and tensile force of the material at a specific moisture content. Lastly, the implementation of the proposed cohesion/adhesion model into the discrete element modelling (DEM) software was also discussed. A cohesion/adhesion calibration for modelling wet sticky iron ore in DEM was then conducted to ensure the material modelled in the simulation is reflective of the reality.From the study, understanding of the cohesion/adhesion characteristics of the wet iron ore material is significantly enhanced. Experimental and numerical outcomes can be directly applied for better designing or optimising the material handling processes that involve wet sticky iron ore. Fatalities that occurred because of rock falls in off-reef excavations (excluding shafts) over the last three years range between ten per cent and 20 per cent of the total number of fatalities that have occurred due to rock falls in the South African mining industry. These rock falls, mostly exacerbated by blasting practices, occur because of failure on discontinuities within the rock mass. Among other reasons of their occurrence is insufficient support installation or the incorrect assessment of rock mass conditions. This report presents qualitative analysis intended to outline rock stability conditions in tunnels subjected to dynamic loading. Seismic waves including those created by firing an explosive charge in tunnel rocks are considered. The rock behaviour is monitored using geophones and extensometers variably installed to record the near and far effects of roof bolt support units on a dynamically loaded rock. The paper discusses the results of field investigations.

This paper cites selected, prominent examples of current, major projects in Southern Africa in both the mining and civil fields. Differences and similarities in the life cycle of mining and civil projects are discussed. A closer relationship between the mining and civil fraternities is beginning to develop and should be encouraged because of the resultant exchange of experience and technology which benefits both disciplines. An attempt is made to assess future potential for new, major projects and trends in the implementation thereof.

Geotechnical investictations and monitoring have been integral to development of the Porgera Gold Mine. The steep, unstable terrain has required a program for monitoring of slopes and foundations which includes survey stations, borehole inclinometers and piezometers. Case studies of the Maip Pass landslide, Yakatabari land-slide, Anawe Plant Site CIP pond excavation and batter, and a load test study for mine waste dumps are presented.Monitoring is needed to ensure that geotechnical risk is kept to a minimum. A vigilant program will be required for the life of the mine.

Aberfoyle Limited has developed the Hellyer complex base metal sulphide deposit located in North West Tasmania. As part of exploration and feasibility study, the ore was extensively tested, including trial milling, and was found to be very fine grained and to have poor flotation selectivity. Substantial innovation was required to produce saleable concentrates at acceptable recoveries and costs. Efforts were made to reduce operating costs, to improve metallurgical performance and to improve work organisation. These efforts were pursued both in design and in subsequent plant operation. This work has resulted in a very competitive operation with production costs in the lowest quartile of the industry. Examples of the measures taken are presented and the results are evidenced by improved plant performance since commissioning.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by a subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.The Toguraci underground mine development commenced in 2011 with ore production commencing in 2012. Water temperatures ranging from 50°C to 80°C were encountered in the Toguraci open pit associated with the structures containing the gold bearing veins and are believed to be fed from a relic volcanic system one to two kilometres below the mine. Underground development and production has continued to intersect these structures with the result that an integrated programme of geological, hydrogeological modelling and operational project work has been required to dewater the mine ahead of the descending stoping fronts.This paper will detail these programmes.CITATION:Lawolo, R, Isles, J, Evert, J, Valenza, A and King, S, 2017. The PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) operation is a large scale coalmine operating on the east coast of Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia. Originally developed under a coal contract of work (CCOW) with the Indonesian Government, new legislation has led to uncertainty as to the actual life of the mine, the size of the operating lease or mining area, the rehabilitation compliance requirements and other areas of concern. The actual life-of-mine (LOM) plan is therefore in a constant state of flux and must be updated and modified with every new piece of information.Under the CCOW system, the mine life ran from the first year of production (1992) for 30 years (2021), with the potential to extend for a further two ten-year periods. KPC has always intended to run until at least 2041. Under the new legislation, the potential term of the CCOW (to be replaced by a mining license) is open to interpretation, resulting in KPC having to prepare plans allowing for a LOM that may end in 2021, 2031, 2041 or a range of other possible periods of time.Uncertainty about legislation (and hence the mine life) possible production rates and available work areas; variable coal prices and costs; varying management contexts; the substantial reserves available; difficulty sourcing dump space; potential rehabilitation costs and the dependence of a community of over 100 000 people on a single operation sees the LOM and mine closure teams preparing dynamic yet thoroughly robust plans that are updated on multiple occasions per year.This paper will describe the procedure followed by KPC and the potentially show stopping issues that must be dealt with.CITATION:Bennett, S M and Manege, I, ?2014. Recent research has highlighted the potential of a relatively new style of gold mineralisation related to granite intrusion. New discoveries in Alaska, Central Europe and Asia and Eastern Australia with total resources of 1600 t Au offer attractive targets for regional exploration in areas which may have been overlooked in the past. A spatial information system was developed to target granite-gold systems in eastern Australia and the West coast of New Zealand, using well constrained geological and exploration models derived from current research. Target areas were recognised in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand that have similar spatial data relationships to known granite gold mineralisation elsewhere in the world. The second phase of the modelling better constrained the regional scale target areas by including more detailed geological, geochemical and geophysical data in the GIS to develop prospect-scale targets and to allow the acquisition of tenements over these areas. A geological review of each target area was carried out in the field to put the GIS models into context. The fieldwork has highlighted the potential for this style of mineralisation in New Zealand and will increase investment in mineral exploration and development in New Zealand in the near future.

The marine portion of the Pacific Basin and Rim constitutes a significant part of the world's surface in which the mineral resources are virtually undeveloped. Indications of substantial resources have resulted in speculation and uncertainty with regard to their potential in the near term. The main issues are centered on the markets for the resource materials, the technology needs for their recovery, and the possible impacts of their development on the environment. While the governments of Japan, France, the Soviet Union, India, China, and Korea are financing new programs in deep ocean mining, the US is consolidating its early leadership by the continuation of NOAA's authority under the Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act and the Sea Grant Act, Interior's authority under the outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, and by the development of a new Marine Minerals Technology Center within the Department of Interior's mineral institutes program, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The Center has a Continental Shelf Division (CSD) located in Mississippi, and an Oceans Basin Division (OBD) located in Hawaii. Research and training in the divisions is directed toward the practical aspects of mineral recovery from the nearshore and deep ocean environments with a strong bias for the OBD toward industrial and international cooperative programs in the Pacific Basin and Rim. In terms of resource development, the marine minerals in the Pacific Basin may be favored in some cases, in competition with land sources, by political and environmental considerations.

Technological changes in Portland cement manufacturing during past years have reflected changes in the economics and availability of various types of fuel such as coal, fuel oil and natural gas. The industry consumes a sig- nificant quantity of both thermal and electric- al energy. The nature of the process and its chemical constraints does however permit the use of comparatively low grade fuels such as high ash coal and high sulphur oil. In striving for increased daily kiln outputs and conservation of energy, there is a worldwide trend towards the use of dry process plants. Wet process kilns of about 2 500 tonnes per day assume massive component sizes which present difficulties in manufacture, and transport to plant sites. Large capacity dry process units in excess of 8 000 tonnes per day are now in operation using precalcination techniques in which part of the fuel is introduced in the static preheater section ahead of the kiln while the balance is added to the kiln in a conventional manner. This technique has virtually doubled the potential output of any given single kiln.

In 1955 the annual production of steel at Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., Port Kembla was 1.2 million tonne and over the following two decades this had progressively increased to the present capacity of 5.4 million tonne per annum. This increase in productivity has also been accompanied by important developments in steelmaking technology and these are explained in the chronological order in which they have taken place. Reference is made to the use of oxygen in open hearth furnaces, the B.O.S. process, the Argon-Oxygen decarburisation process for stainless steel, vacuum degassing and continuous casting. When the vacuum degassing and continuous casting units are commissioned, the Port Kembla Works will have achieved a standard of steelmaking technology equal to any in the world.

Traditional exploration has been undertaken by both local and overseas experts to discover tin deposits in Indonesia over almost 300 years. Indonesia is part of a tin belt which runs from Myanmar in the north through Malaysia to Singkep, Bangka, and Belitung islands in Indonesia in the south. The discovery of alluvial tin deposits is becoming harder as the more obvious geological targets are exhausted and topographical conditions become more difficult. New approaches are required to sustain successful exploration. There are indications that tin deposits can be found at depth on-shore as well as off-shore. These deposits are found associated with tough clays. On-shore tin exploration is hampered by swampy areas, while the off-shore search is often affected by difficult sea conditions. These factors lead to increases in the cost of exploration as well as the cost of subsequent production. Tin price fluctuations and environmental issues are also of major concern in the planning of the future operation of tin mining in Indonesia.

Prior to 1975, most geochemical drainage surveys for gold were based on analyses for pathfinder elements, such as As and Cu, rather than direct analysis for gold, for two reasons. Firstly, analytical methods lacked the required sensitivity and precision to determine gold abundance at background levels in stream sediments (usually in the range 1 - 10 ppb). Direct analysis was also inhibited by concern about the potential for gross sampling error, brought about by the dispersion of gold as rare discrete particles of the extremely dense native metal. This sampling error, commonly termed the 'nugget effect' has two components: erratic distribution of the element within the stream environment, related to hydraulic factors, and the difficulty in taking representative samples, both in the field and later in sub-sampling for analysis. In more recent years the collection of very large samples was commonly advocated to overcome the sampling problem (Hams, 1982; Nichol, 1986).Two methods have been widely used to evaluate the gold content of bulk samples (Elliott and Towsey, 1989). The preparation and analysis of heavy mineral concentrates has in recent years been largely superseded by the leaching of gold contained in bulk samples by cyanide, commonly termed the BLEG (Bulk Leach Extractable Gold) or BCL (Bulk Cyanide Leach) methods. The terms BLEG and BCL are essentially interchangeable and the latter will be adopted for the remainder of this paper. The magnitude and orientation of the in situ stressfield has been determined as a key factor in controlling the stability of openings for both coal mine development and extraction. Monitoring of roadway and pillar behaviour in conjunction with numerical analysis has identified specific stress control measures that have been successfully applied to improve productivity in underground coal mining operations. The influence of the major horizontal stressfield on the stability of openings has been identified at a wide range of sites including mines in Australia, Britain, the USA, New Zealand and Japan. Stress mapping, stress measurement and stress monitoring techniques have been applied to define the in situ stress regime and, together with the correlation of measurements of rock deformation and rock reinforcement behaviour, has enabled appropriate stress control measures to be developed. Stress control measures for development headings have required the selection of roadway orientation, roadway sequencing, reinforcement density and pillar size. The monitoring of behaviour at a range of trial sites has confirmed significant improvements in development stability. Stress control measures for longwall extraction have required rational selection of longwall orientation and extraction direction. Where a mine layout design incorporating the optimum longwall layout design has not been possible, the use of sacrificial roadways has been successfully applied to protect key roadways from stress concentration effects.
