The proposed guidelines on vibration limits that have been circulated by the Australian Environmental Council, demonstrate the need for an extensive data collection and evaluation program to avoid the enacting of abritrary and costly legislation. The operational or practical influence of blast design and overall economic implications of legislation which further reduces permissible levels of ground vibration are discussed. In a typical blasting operation, blast sizes could become smaller and blasting correspondingly more frequent to meet pro- duction demands. Blasthole diameters and charge lengths could be reduced, increasing drilling costs and associated labour costs. Blast size however, is frequently controlled by factors associated with machinery, grade control, pit control, stope size, production contract levels and other factors which cannot be readily changed for operating mines. Blasthole diameters are frequently deter- mined by existing drilling equipment, length of holes (depth of ore or stope size), geological structure and other factors which are not easily changeable. Typical large scale open stoping and strip mining opera- tions are analysed as case studies. The effects of extreme leg- islative limits and the corresponding operational changes with respect to variations in production costs are discussed.

Interest in mineral sand mining in the south west corner of Western Australia began in the late 1940's and significant production commenced in 1956. Early land use conflicts arose because of conservation implications (Ludlow tuart forest), expanded to include post-mining rehabilitation requirements (the Wonnerup mine near Busselton) and today include some agricultural/mining disputes. These latter conflicts are largely caused by the need for mining companies to secure longer-term reserves. To date, deposits containing mineral valued at A$440 million have been sterilized and are unlikely to become available in the future. There is additional pressure being placed on presently available reserves and a pessimistic picture could be drawn, whereby the southwest mineral sands industry ceases to exist by the year 2010. However, sensible land use planning, the support of policticians and the community, and responsible attitudes towards compensation and rehabilitation could, in combination, see the industry maintain significant mineral output until the middle of the 21st century. Examples of deposits sterilized by adverse land use will be given.

In surface mining, studies of the kinematics of blasted rocks using high speed film/video image analysis have allowed the estimation of the starting time, direction and magnitude of visible movement of fixed sections of the free face. Horizontal displacement versus time plots from discrete targets at the face generally report changes in slope over very small time intervals. These changes indicate step increases in velocity due to the action of explosive gases. In practice, the onset of rock mass movement, different to localised spalling, has been associated with a response time which exceeds the combined times of detonation, propagation and reflection of stress waves. This time is referred to as minimum response or burden movement time. As an engineering index, burden movement time has been used to provide guidelines for the selection of inter-hole and inter-row delay sequences in production blasting. With respect to improving breakage and fragmentation, it has been demonstrated that the delay interval between adjacent explosive charges should be less than the expected burden movement time. Similarly to reduce confinement between rows, delay intervals should exceed the expected burden movement time. The Hybrid Stress Blasting Model (HSBM) is a modelling framework that dynamically links an ideal and non-ideal explosives detonation code to a geomechanical rock model. This blast simulation tool is aimed at analysing the role played by different explosive formulations in fragmenting and/or damaging various rock types under different degrees of confinement. In the current framework, the rock behaviour under extremely high pressures and loading rates is calibrated from shock tests and the role of the explosive in fracture growth is accounted for and assumes a compressible fluid flowing through the explicit fracture network. The model is being developed as part of an international collaborative research project funded by a consortium of companies comprised of explosive and equipment suppliers and major mining houses. As part of the development and validation of the HSBM project, data from literature addressing the kinematics of the rock mass (ie burden displacement, face velocities and response times) has been collated and used to evaluate the current version of the code. A series of numerical experiments have been conducted with the view to: evaluate the response of the rock mass to changes in burden distance given by the impact of both stress waves and radial gas flow pressure;compare the modelling outcomes in terms of displacement, response time and face velocities to documented field observations; andcompare stress induced and stress/gas induced modes in terms of burden displacement outcomes. Results from these experiments have shown that in its current form the model is able to capture the trends observed and measured in practice. This is with respect to the simulation of burden displacement, response time and average face velocities for different geometries and charging conditions. The experiments have served as consistency checks which form part of an ongoing and comprehensive evaluation and validation of the HSBM code also aimed at addressing some of its current limitations.

The manufacture of steel from raw materials which have to be mined, transported and processed must affect the environment. Steelmaking, like almost every other stage of manufacture involves the unwanted production of dust and fume; thus a major part of the steel industry's effort to minimize changes to the environment is the collection, treatment and recycling of dust and fume to avoid pollution of the atmosphere and waterways. The paper describes how this achieved in the various steelmaking processes and shows the diversity of problems-and their solutions in this context. Particular emphasis is, given to basic oxygen steelmaking.

The Savage River Mines concentrator treats magnetite ore at about 300 tonne/h, and produces feed for a pelletising plant. The plant incorporates two parallel grinding lines, each consisting of an autogenous mill, in closed circuit with a screen, a rougher mag- netic separator, a ball mill in closed circuit with parallel cyclones, and a finisher magnetic separator. Significant fluctuations in ore grade and grindability make it difficult to maintain pro- duct size in the narrow range desired, and to achieve maximum possible throughput at the same time, using the present largely manual control system. The present paper describes the develop- ment of a control system based on a mini- computer. It has been possible to implement a scheme of on-line estimation of product size which is sufficiently accurate for use in an automatic control system. The size estimation is essentially derived in terms of plant variables which control the ball mill cyclone cut size. Three control functions have so far been implemented and tested. These are control of the feed rate to the autogenous mill, control of water addition to the autogenous mill, and control of the ball mill sump level.

Chrome chemicals are commercially produced by the alkali roasting of the chrome-bearing ore chromite with sodium carbonate. In order to ascertain the influence on the extent of reaction of the replacement of Mg(II) for Fe(II) in the chromite spinel structure and the presence of acidic oxides in the gangue material, a series of roasting experiments was conducted using chromite materials from a number of different locations. The roast feeds and products were chemically analysed and the major compounds identified using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope techniques.Mg(II) replacement for Fe(II) in the chromite structure does not appear to restrict the amount of "available" chromium for reaction.Under the test conditions, namely an atmosphere of pure oxygen, finely ground chrome-bearing material, a roast temperature of 950°C and the stoichiometric amount of sodium carbonate to react with the chromite, the yield of water-soluble sodium chromate was able to be expressed as %yield = 104.5 -1.58 × %AI2O3 - 2.23 × %SiO2 for chromite samples containing alumina in the range 7.8 to 27.8 per cent and silica in the range 2.9 to 7.4 per cent.

The Archean geological sequence in the West Pilbara region (Fig 1), a deformed greenstone volcano-sedimentary succession regionally intruded by layered mafic/ultramafic lopoliths, batholithic granites, granite stocks and transected by swarms of dolerite dykes, has prompted several companies to search for a variety of base metals and and platinoids (Fig 2). In the first instance, detailed aeromagnetic surveying was completed, producing patterns of marked magnetic anomalism which proved substantially successful in the demarcation of areas warranting geological reconnaissance and detailed follow-up. Revelant to this paper were the obvious magnetic features overlying outcropping and buried mafic/ultramafic bodies which ultimately were proven to be host to Ni-Cu sulphides, pgm, Ti, V, Cr and, more recently, Ag and Au mineralisation. Routine stream sediment, soil sampling and ground geophysical techniques of the day appear, in most cases, to have been adequate in the detection of mineralisation, except in the case of Radio Hill massive sulphides where the Turam E.M. (1972) signal essentially failed to detect the blind conductor (Peters, de Angelis 1987).

Although the diesel engine is normally considered a tried and proven power source, many new and exciting diesel design concepts are being evaluated in engine development laboratories around the world. Three such programs currently underway at Cummins Engine Company are discussed. The turbocompound engine converts into power exhaust heat energy which is normally wasted. It does this by incorporating after the turbocharger a low pressure gas turbine which is gear driven to the crankshaft. The adiabatic engine has no conventional cooling system. It converts into useful power most of the heat energy normally rejected to the coolant. The series boost turbocharged engine uses seperate low and high pressure turbochargers to increase engine output and improve transient performance. These design concepts make possible increases in diesel engine thermal efficiency from the current 33 to 38 per cent range to the 50 percent range.

Queensland Mines Limited operates a small uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek in the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve, some 265 km due east of Darwin. It was the wish of the local Aboriginal people that the ore be treated over an eight year period and that no township be constructed in Arnhem Land. Due to these wish- es it was decided to house employees and their families in Darwin and fly the employees to the minesite for work rosters. A singleman's style camp only was constructed at Nabarlek. To satisfy the Aboriginal people's wishes all recreation time is spent offsite thus lead- ing to a roster system whereby employees spend three distinct periods of 6, 6 and 4 days on- site, broken by recreation periods of 3, 4 and 5 days in Darwin, during each 28 day period. Employees are divided into four opposing rosters, which allows at any given time for approximately half the workforce to be onsite and the other half on rest and recreation leave in Darwin. This method of staffing has generally proved to be most satisfactory although at times problems arise, in terms of both product- ion and social effect not normally encountered when operating within more conventional circum- Stances.

Utah Development Company operates a mine at Blackwater with a present annual production of 4 000 000 tonnes of coking coal. Mineable seams outcropping on the company's lease are part of the Permian Mammoth Rangal Coal Measures. Current operations are based pre- dominantly on the Main Lower seam. Coal quality variations occur along the seam strike, in the direction of seam dip, within the seam plies and in isolated anomalous areas. Raw coal of non-specification quality is washed to reduce ash and sulphur and to improve the free swelling index. Raw coal meeting specification quality is sent directly to product, by-passing the washplant. Careful attention to mining, coal preparation and product blending is necessary to ensure that the combined product meets specifications.

It was not until 1840 that silver-lead ore was discovered in the Mount Lofty Ranges, and developed as Australia's first metalliferous mine.

In recently completed road tunnel projects in Queensland, such as the Airport Link and the Clem7 tunnels, there is a smoke duct running along the roof of the carriageways to extract smoke in case of fire. In New South Wales, no road tunnels have a smoke duct. In the Melbourne City Link tunnels, there is a small smoke duct running along the roof. All of the tunnels are safe as claimed by the designers and authorities. However, there is significant cost associated with providing a full size smoke duct compared with no smoke duct. This paper is going to present a comparison of the road tunnel safety with a smoke duct and those without one from a risk perspective. It further discusses the cost-effectiveness of such provisions and whether similar levels of safety could be achieved without a smoke duct.CITATION:Lau, R, 2014. The Hodgkinson Province forms the northern part of the Tasman Orogen and contains the most extensive outcrops of Silurian - Devonian rocks in Queensland. Deep-water, marine siliciclastic sequences (mainly turbidites) dominate most of the province except near the western margin where mafic volcanics and fossiliferous limestones characterise much of the succession. It is difficult to apply normal stratigraphic mapping techniques to the Hodgkinson Province because of extensive stratal disruption by numerous thrust faults, the general lack of stratigraphic and structural markers, and the unfossiliferous nature of much of the succession. Nevertheless, several distinct units have been delineated although their internal stratigraphy or boundary or superpositional relationships are uncertain. Ordovician strata, as well as two major unconformities have been recognised in the western part of the province. Several models have been proposed to explain the evolution of the Hodgkinson Province. Although there is no general agreement most recent researchers favour an extensional tectonic regime.

Production from the Cattle Grid orebody commenced in August, 1974. This followed a recent discovery arising from an extensive exploration programme involving stratigraphic drilling, geochemistry and geophysics. Located some 4 km west of the original copper occurrences at Pernatty Lagoon the discovery was found to contain 4.6 million tonnes of ore averaging 2.4% copper. The ore is a "sandstone copper" type localised near the disconformity between two Precambrian (Adelaidean) stratigraphic units, the Pandurra Formation and the Whyalla Sandstone. The mineralisation roughly follows the interface between these units and occurs in fractures, vugs and along bedding planes. The mineralogical character of the ore is somewhat complex consisting of chalcocite and bornite, with associated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite and other less common sulphides. 1. Regional synergies concern the capture, recovery and reuse of by-products, water and energy between industrial operations in close proximity. The Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) undertakes applied research to further advance regional synergies in the Kwinana Industrial Area in Western Australia in order to achieve greater efficiencies in water, energy and materials consumption and reduction in waste and emission generation. The Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) and its member organisations recognise water consumption and disposal as key environmental issues. Some 30 companies in Kwinana consume a total of more than 35 000 ML/yr of fresh water. Over the past years significant progress has been made towards the reduction of water consumption and improvements in effluent disposal. As part of the CSRP Kwinana Synergies Project, water balances for the ten major water consuming companies have been completed, including workshop sessions with company staff on water synergy opportunities. This work resulted in a set of synergy opportunities which are currently being pursued. In parallel to the Kwinana project, the CSRP has commissioned a supporting project that delivers a toolkit to guide a more targeted and less resource intensive way to identify feasible water synergy opportunities. One of these tools focuses specifically on water, and takes count of input and output water flows within a given industrial area to deliver listings of prioritised water synergy opportunities. This paper discusses the water mapping and workshop approach taken in Kwinana and its outcomes, which are to identify and evaluate water synergy opportunities. The results from the trial application of the developed Regional Eco-Efficiency Opportunity Assessment Toolkit are also presented.

On 20 December 1983 at 8.40am blast- hole 57 of Blast RN177 prematurely detonated follwed by a violent deflagration of blast- hole 59 at 10.40am. The blastholes were 380mm diameter drilled in black pyritic Mt McRae shale. The blastholes were loaded with ANFO and primed. Blasthole 57 was stemmed and blasthole 59 was not. A poss- ible mechanism which could lead to such a detonation is described. preliminary tests showed the top 5m of a bench had the highest temperature which could not be influenced by a range of treat -ments. Small scale laboratory tests show- ed that zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium carbonate (Mg2CO3) inhibited the reaction. A series of tests using AN with and without inhibitors loaded into the collars of blast -holes drilled in the top 6m of the bench and unstemmed is described. An analysis of the time to reaction of the holes loaded with AN against temperature shows that the decomposition of the AN in contact with the black pyritic shale is probably a sulphuric acid catalysed react- ion. All the inhibitors tested can neut- ralise the sulphuric acid in the shale. 10% ZnO appears to be an effective inhibitor of the reaction providing the AN/ZnO (90/10) is kept out of contact with surface material whose temperature can be as high as 60¦C in summer. It is concluded that ANFO/ZnO (90/ 10) should be now tested in stemmed holes.

This paper, describing milling practice at Mount Isa Mines, is one of a series covering milling methods and costs that is being published by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior.The Mount Isa concentrator began operations in May 1931, by treating a mixture of oxidized and sulphide ores. Since March, 1935, only sulphide ores have been milled; this change involved major alterations to the flow sheet. The maximum capacity on mixed oxide and sulphide ores was 2,650 tons per day; the present capacity is approximately 1,880 tons of sulphide ore per day. The installation of additional Grushing, grinding, and flotation equipment when completed early in 1939 will increase the maximum capacity of the concentrator to 2;240 tons of sulphide ore daily.All tonnages in this paper are expressed in tons of 2,000 pounds, gallon measurements in terms of Imperial gallons of 277·41 cubic inches, and costs in dollars at the rate of $4 United States currency to the Australian pound.

Three polymers of varying chemistries and molecular weights have been used to depress talc in a model sulfide ore consisting of talc, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. Flotation testing revealed a distinct hierarchy of effectiveness of the polymers in the depression of talc (HP Starch > Polymer-H > Dextrin WY) but a different order of effectiveness for depression selectivity (Dextrin WY > Polymer-H > HP Starch). Adsorption isotherm determinations for the gangue and valuable mineral phases indicate that the differences in selectivity are partially due to adsorbed amount variations, with Dextrin WY adsorbing marginally less on the sulfides than Polymer-H. Contact angle measurements on packed particle beds have revealed that the polymers have differing abilities to reduce the contact angle of talc and the sulfide minerals. An explanation of the observed trends is given in terms of the binding mechanisms of the polymers on the talc and the sulfide mineral phases. Order of addition effects between collector and depressant were also investigated using adsorption isotherm determinations for the polymers in the presence of a pre-adsorbed layer of collector and vice versa. Adsorption of the polymers was not affected by the presence of the collector. Similar results were obtained for the adsorption of collector in the presence of pre-adsorbed layers of polymer.
